Here is a track written in the early seventies about an area just half a mile from my place of abode.

The melodic number Costafine Town took its inspiration from Corstorphine Town in Shields, the stretch of the riverside between West Holborn and Templetown, which includes McNulty's shipyard.

It was entirely arranged and produced by George Harrison.

This song was originally offered to Sam Cooke, who turned it down, and was passed on to Ricky Nelson; his rendition went to #1 on the US charts in 1961:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0janfcZ8LUw

Incidentally, the backing singers on the recording are none other than The Jorinaires, the same backup vocal group used by Elvis...

Before the Beatles came along, another British act made all the way to the #1 position on the US singles chart:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jzx664u5DA

The above single was released in 1962 and was rather indicative of the sort of music prevalent on the radio airwaves; the enormity of the sea change to come in the form of the Beatles and the "British Invasion" about a year later is stunning when you consider just how quickly popular music evolved in such short span of time...

AS a BTW, there is a strip mall a few blocks from my home and one of the businesses is a good-sized drugstore where I have my prescriptions. One of the problems the store has had is panhandlers and transients hanging about outside the entrance. The store tried a well-known remedy of installing loudspeakers and playing classical music to shoo away the ne'er-do-wells and the ploy worked on most of them; however, there were still a few who seemed to little affected by the scheme. A few weeks back, I noticed there was music by on particular artist playing over the speakers as I went into the store (the music inside the store is more the standard pop/rock fare) and, when I exited, another song by the same artist was playing. Over the next couple of weeks, that particular artist's songs were always playing whenever I went to the pharmacy; I also noticed there was nary a panhandler or transient in sight. Who was this artist who put such dread into the hearts and souls of even the most stubborn layabouts?...

...Barry Manilow...

I asked one of the security guards about the songs being played and he confirmed that, indeed, it was a deliberate attempt to rid the store of the layabouts; he also said some of the guys seemed to tough it out for a bit, but they always scattered when one particular Manilow song played: Mandy...

I always suspected there was at least one valid reason/use for Manilow's work...

Jayne Mansfield appeared in an early Rock & Roll themed film, The Girl Can't Help It (1956), with the title song performed by Little Richard. The opening scene was like something Benny Hill would have done:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uf_qJRwM4CI

Here is the full song, with several scenes of Jayne from the movie:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqz6Y9aHGIQ

Jayne Mansfield was known for being a big self-promoter, always hyping whatever project she had going at the moment; she once made and appearance on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, and, during her interview, Carson had a small cash register on his desk; every time Jayne would plug something, Carson would press a key on the register and a loud "Ka-Ching" would sound...

Jayne's daughter is a star in her own right as the lead on the TV series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a role she has held for 19 seasons. Here she discusses her mothers death:

I got into the music of Kurt Weill and Brecht at the age of 22, when I'd listened to all the jazz albums that the local record-library had to offer and pulled out this old LP entitled "Die Dreigroschenoper". Louis Armstrong and Bobby Darin got me interested in Weil and Brecht with the song Mack The Knife; later there was The Doors version of Alabama Song. I also got more info on Weil, Brecht, Lenya, and other cabaret-style artists, form an unlikely source: the owner of the rock club where I worked in the mid to late 70s, a very laid back Louisiana-born guy with a mind as sharp as a tack was a very big fan of the Nazi fleeing composers and artists and would often discuss the music and would even, sometimes, break into some rather serviceable renditions of some of the works...

Good pick! An often overlooked Cream performance......

Here is a rare bit of video, filmed (or v-taped) for The Smothers Brothers Summer Summer Show, hosted by Glen Campbell (who would soon get a network show of his own) of Cream playing live. The overlays of the time code, etc., are a bit of a distraction, but the sound is not half bad; noticeable is the lack of the usual Cream 'thunder', due to the fact playing through massed Marshall stacks at full volume probably would have shredded the fairly delicate sound equipment found in TV studios at the time...

Also nice to see Clapton playing a Gibson Firebird...

Also a big fan of Clapton. First heard of him when a San Francisco FM station began playing Mayall cuts with Clapton featured. I did get to see Mayall perform live, back in the early eighties, at the Roxy Theater on the Sunset Strip in LA; the theater is not very big, maxes out at 500, if you pack it with an SRO crowd (the fire marshals are not too keen on that idea); that night, the Roxy had table seating in front of the stage and I was lucky enough to get a seat right at the front at center stage; the big draw, other than Mayall himself, was Mick Taylor on guitar; the lineup that night was quartet, bass, drums, two guitars, with mayal sometimes on harp and keyboard...

I felt I shouldn't laugh when my friend told me this story today, but I bloody did and then some. He told me that they'd recently been to a neighbour's funeral and the guy had requested to have "Spirit in The Sky" played. Some local worthy (an elderly local politician who always seems to need to get in on the act) had been entrusted with the job of turning on the CD player at the right moment, but instead of Spirit in The Sky they got this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpWmlRNfLck

Most of the assembled just shifted in their seats and looked at one another quizzically, as if wondering just which war the guy had been in, but they all sat quietly the whole way through. The old guy did get a bollocking afterwards, too :haha:

Reminded me of a scene fron the Whoopi Goldberg film, Jumpin' Jack Flash, where she thinks the song may be a clue to deciphering a coded message:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyHNryKojDY

Hard to believe, but the song is now a half-century old, having been released in 1968. I remember buying the single here in LA at a Sears store that somehow managed to have the single on sale before the usual outlets. The clip below is a pre-MTV promo clip released by the Stones. The Beatles and the Stones, both, had ceased to tour after about 1966 and both relied on filmed performances to promote their releases. This performance has the Stones miming to a previously recorded live track; there are at least two, and perhaps three, separate versions of this promo and this one has the Stones all made-up; another version is the same setting, but without the make-up and appears to be actually a live performance. The first time I saw this any version of this clip clip was back in 1970 when a rock music compilation film titled Popcorn included the live clip...

An update on the "Barry Manilow as Layabout Repellent" situation I posted before: The pharmacy is still using the dreaded Power of The Manilow to keep away the transients, etc., and it seems to be working very well. About a week ago, I went down there to pick up a script and found the store, normally open 24 hours a day was temporarily closed due to some staff meeting going on; the security guard said they were expected to reopen shortly so I decided to wait. I had my old Sony Walkman radio with me, so I put in the earphones and blocked out the Manlow. The next several minutes were very amusing: several other customers came up to the closed doors, waited for a couple of minutes, and, with a glance up at the offending audio speakers, left quickly...

Reminded me of Robin Williams when he was the alien on Mork & Mindy: "I have to go to the bathroom ... number 3!"...

The posts a bit back about Weill and Lenya brought to mind another artist of the time, Django Reinhardt, a great jazz guitarist who influenced a great many following guitarists. I used to point out Django to my finger-picking snob friends: Django used a flatpick and he had two paralyzed fingers (ring and pinky) on his left, fretting hand and he still was more agile than a great many full-handed finger-pickers. Here he is playing a number familiar to Das Boot fans:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANArGmr74u4

Along the same lines as Django, Anton Karas, a zither player, also had a sort of East European sound to his works and is most famous for the theme music and soundtrack to The Third Man film. Karas was literally discovered underground, in the wine cellar of a bistro, performing for tips, by the director of the movie:

^ i recently read it again, and found it to be better than some decades ago (getting older and having a better understanding of some technical details, and also regarding human relations). It is about JU 88 squadrons in their role as torpedo bombers, with the author being a pilot of one of those back then. In a way it is like this "633 Squadron", but with much less pathos. It is tense and frustrating at the same time, with a lot of gallows humor and some good info about the JU 88.
Since my father worked at the Junkers Werke in Dessau i have a sweet spot for the Junkers aircraft, though the later company became something different, after professor Hugo Junkers was sacked.

I do not know if the english translation is any good, but it is a terrific (meaning positive) read in german :hmmm:

This is from time when Eurovision contest was still about music and not about bearded "woman", monsters and other clowns just making lame noise.

I was looking through some DVDs and came across the Jimi Hendrix Live at Monterey DVD. I watched it and, when it came to his performance of Hey Joe, I was reminded of how so many performers have covered this song; it is almost as ubiquitous as Louie, Louie and is almost a rite of passage for garage bands everywhere. Most of those my age were probably first exposed to the Leaves' version of the song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPa2HzDV7-0

The song was written by a folkie musician named Billy Roberts; I had heard his acoustic original version way back in the early sixties and I really haven't heard his version since then; it was a pleasant surprise to hear just how good the original really was, how good a guitarist Roberts was, and just how closely Hendrix followed Roberts' original arrangement:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Roberts

Sometimes, it really is worth the effort to go back and find the source of music one enjoys...

I'm just going to leave a bit of a musician I've been listening to to lately and. probably, someone few people have ever heard of:

Interesting you used the word "raga" since that was the first idea that popped into my mind when I first heard Otis Taylor. Actually, in certain forms of Deep Southern Blues, particularly around the Delta into New Orleans, there is an almost raga/trance-like mood to the music. This probably stems from the roots of the Blues in slave laments and work songs that were structured to provide a sort of "soundtrack" for their labors. There is an excellent book by the late music critic Robert Palmer (not the singer of the same name) titled Deep Blues covering the evolution of the Blues forms that is well worth the read; there was also a documentary inspired by the book, also titled Deep Blues, financed by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, with Stewart and Palmer filming some of the artists who are steeped in the old traditions; here is a YT link to a posting of the documentary (the segments with RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough are particularly relevant to the "raga" analogy):

Here is a bit of another artist who could deliver a mean bit of trance Blues:

^ Yes, my friend... I know that I've posted 'River' myself in the past, and you commented on it then, I think. Maybe you're right... a basic beauty exists in that song, whereas this version of 'Amelia' I posted is overtly produced (lovely, nonetheless). But 'River'... I'd forgotten how beautiful that is

Pretty much anything Joni created has elements of beauty exceed what is found in most music, particularly nowadays. Speaking of Joni and overproduced, her song For Free has always bothered me: if the producer had just let Joni sing and play the piano solo and scrapped the cello and just maybe added in the solo clarinet at the end, I think it would have been a much better production...

I am just about to listen to "For Free", vienna, but I'll say that while I was eating my scrambled eggs on toast just now I remembered what it was that you said before: "Eichhörnchen must be in love" or something like that :haha:

Well that's it, isn't it? Joni Mitchell's music was the soundtrack to our burgeoning youth and hopes of love

Actually, IIRC, you had been posting a series of songs that seemed to be following a theme and it was uncertain whether the the theme revolved around love found or love lost; also, IIRC, I posted a video link of comedian Richard Jeni's Love Song routine...

...other than that, I'm out. Now, excuse me while I ask passing strangers if they might happen to remember where I live... :03:

Some beautiful music again, Joni Mitchell, Blues, Raga, Queen etc.. i never liked "Purple Rain" from Prince though

And "Fury in the Slaughterhouse".. i remember one of their first 'gigs' in Goettingen on a jurist party in the 'Juridicum', in the 1980ies. They are from Hannover, experimenting with german rock songs sung in english.. well they have sure improved since then :haha:

The whole raga discussion got me to thinking (a risky endeavor as that tends to set off the smoke alarm) about rock songs that are raga-like...

The Rolling Stones, way back in 1966 released this long (for the time) bit of trance:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-rQPJrmpsw

When this song by The Cult was released in 1985, I was trying to suss out the guitar parts when I noticed the electric guitar part was similar in structure to some of the ragas I had heard:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAdRCUsqg-U

This song was written by Donovan and this performance is by Jefferson Airplane from their 1969 live album Bless Its Pointed Little Head:
