If I find myself in that situation and need to ge home I fly just off the deck and weave a little. It seems the AI doesn't like flying ultra low at all.
Flew low nearly all way home (long way) nearly ploughed a few fields in the process :p It was when i needed a bit altitude to see the base, they got me.

What yer blamming about...its just some scratches here and there..most of the aircraft is still in 1 piece

Damn thing was almost uncontrolable :x

Look at the bright side, you didn't have to walk to far to get home.;)

That's right. If you fly low enough they won't hit you.
That's what I tried in kratos last video.

Then have a look at the bright side again: your comrades didn't have to search long for your body and could soon go back to their cardgames .;)

Oblt. Lothar Albrecht von Neimenbaum jumps from his burning Fokker E.II to his death. He leaves a legacy of 31 victories behind him, as well as both Iron Crosses First and Second Class and the Pour le Merite, which he was wearing at the time of his death.

Photo taken by fellow pilot Lt. Hermann Wenzl.

You'd better do that. Although I'm not a big fan of the Tripe, it's undoubtly the one that has given me most claims. It can be extremely fast at times (compared to that eras standards) and can sure take a beating, but is somewhat slow in turns. It has a high ceiling too!

Bigglesworth heads home after a busy day at the front (note the bulletholes). This was his last flight with his trusty Sopwith Tripe. Shortly after his return to the squadron, he was ordered by the airbase doctor to stay on the ground for at least a week, due to a number of health reasons. When he returned to duty, RNAS-8 had been equipped with the topmodern Sopwith Camel!

Yeah, you used to have to pay for it, but Cap'n Darwin's site is gone now (homepage for FCJ; it was PLGRAFIX.COM). You'll probably find a few copies on eBay or Amazon. I asked for my copy on THEAERODROME.COM (asked for it and got the hell outta there; the members of that site aren't very welcoming and their artists have ego issues).

If you want, I could make you a copy of the files and send it to you (copyright is nonexistent for FCJ now).

And, of course, business as usual:

We were tasked with escorting some bombers but we decided that there's no point dogfighting in those conditions (Winds were insane, blew my aircraft onto the taxiway as soon as the mission started and I had to take off in reverse) and the bombers weren't anywhere in sight so we RTBed after about 10 minutes

Correct. Those are indeed Emil 7's, but at the time I took the picture I preferred flying the 7 to the 4 and there were a number of BoB skins for it ok il2skins oddly enough. I think I was also monkeying with the formation commands so I would equip drop tanks just to make that feature work.

Correct, but it doesnt work that well in pacific maps. If you set the distance to minimum in DCG, it doesnt mean that it uses it, only when it is possible. Pacific maps usually tend to have pretty darn long distances to fly, no matter the setting on DCG.

It's always funny when you fail landing on a carrier. You bail out into the sea, and it steams right over your guy, killing him.

What's funnier is that if your plane splashes into the sea right in front of the carrier it will run it over and make it explode

You have to practice those landings and after some time they won't be that hard anymore.:D
A tip is not to approach the carrier straight from behind all the way.

Try it like this:
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/54/1012554/1024_3339656163366535.jpg

It will allow you to look at the carrier for a long time while setting up your approach. You just line up with it at the very end of your approach. Doing that you avoid flying "blind" for a long time while the carrier is obscured by parts of the plane.:D
Here a record of it (just put it into your Il2-1946 records file)
Approach (http://rapidshare.de/files/40118715/Approach.ntrk.html)

Some planes can even lift the pilot's seat (only with opened canopy) to give him a better view out of the cockpit during final approach.

That's an interesting way to land, but why switch off the engine? You'd get a much larger margin of error with it running. I usually do either a curved approach(as in Schröder's drawing, but only straightening out at the final moment), or a steep approch with a shallow final. Either way bringing it down with the hook down, full flaps and just above stall speed works every time.

I've found that switching it off can help improve lining it up with the deck for a safe landing (keeps you from having to deal with ANY torque).

Schroeder
07-31-08, 08:56 AM
Yeah, but if you fail on the approach you have no way to go around.:hmm:

I usually land with zero throttle (on a carrier) there you don't have to deal with much torque and are on the safe side if you should fail to go land properly.

Dowly
07-31-08, 09:40 AM
I always have atleast 20% throttle (lately 35-40%) when landing, be it carrier or land. 109 for example is much easier to control when you have your throttle open. :yep:

Raptor1
07-31-08, 10:00 AM
When I land on a carrier I always come in a straight line while changing the throttle around from 0% to about 40% trying to keep the speed at about 150-180km/h, then I go to 0% right before touching down

Can't say it's the best approach, but it works most of the time...

This is how real planes do it so if they miss the wires, you can go around and try again!

-S

Suicide Charlie
07-31-08, 02:19 PM
I think you guys are applying rules used for landing jet aircraft too much here.

Landing a piston engined prop job is a lot different. There's a reason why the British invention of an angled deck caught on and is now a standard in the jet age.

Jet aircraft are coming aboard carriers at a much higher speed than what we're flying did. They require around 200ft of space to roll out after they've caught a wire. Piston engined aircraft don't need nearly that amount of room.

Because of that difference in power and speed angled decks were necessary. Everything was moving faster and the margin of error became bigger. It is much easier to miss all of the wires and a jet aircraft is not going to stop by itself. It is also possible to power up in a split second and fly off the carrier again. You're not going to do that on a straight deck carrier with a piston engine and if you do then you were approaching way too fast in the first place and missed the glide path.

For me turning off my engine right before or as I touch down on deck has always been part of my glide path. Sometimes I'll do it when I'm still in the air a bit and come aboard in a full glide. It's just all about maintaining that glide path under minimal power to make a clean arrest.

Stealth Hunter's diagram to me actually looks text book.

In IL2 that can only be done in multi-engined planes. In the single-engined ones you can usually adjust pitch, but never feather the prop.

Enemy approaching:

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/54/1012554/1024_3663316464396638.jpg

Let's zooooooooom:

On top of him:
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/54/1012554/1024_3838396234386462.jpg

Only light damage was done so here we go up again:

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/54/1012554/1024_3864356131613432.jpg

Got behind him and gave him what he deserved:;)

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/54/1012554/1024_6461353638333031.jpg

Up again, but he was so badly damaged that he tried to escape:

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/54/1012554/1024_6639353132363062.jpg

Closing in for the kill:

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/54/1012554/1024_3361396366633864.jpg

There you go. Aren't you already starting to love the 51? An excellent b&z machine :yep:

One thing I especially love about it is cockpit visibility. I tried the same kind of method in a 190D9, and although it's doable it's much more difficult because the enemy disappears under the nose when diving. Your only option is to dive to his deep six and engage from there, while with the 51 you can go straight for the enemy and those nice deflection shots from above. The P-47 is quite similar, but not as good in climbs as the 51. Fighting like that you'll have no problem with the AI, but I don't have much experience against humans either.

Try that in an older version of the P51.;)

*EDIT*
O.K. I think I misunderstood you. You mean being able to do descend deflective shooting. That works as well in the older ones (just tried it).
Yeah, that's awful in all FW190. From what I hear this is because Oleg put the gunsight to low in the cockpits. In real life they were higher (as I said, from what I hear...).
