You're not alone, IIRC a similar fate befell a 109 or 110 pilot during the BOB, strafed a train on the Kent Coast, the boiler exploded and the debris damaged the aircraft so much it had to crash land nearby.

Trim often... no, more than often, constantly. Really, it flies itself. You can mantain a constant course, speed and altitude towards a target without any input, while staring down at the Skvahl display and locking targets. Engaging other helo's is a different story though.

Thing is, KA-50 doesn't have any radar, FLIR or fancy countermeasures/warning equipment, stuff that is more likely to be classified.

You sure KA-50 is still relatively classified? I doubt it to be honest, since ED won't do a playable model unless they have about all the information you can think of. They don't like filling blanks with guess-work for the DCS series. :hmmm:

Hmmm, the cockpit of the F6 is open which leads to the assumption that the American is already in his "I want to land and ignore everything else" mode.

BTW Your Zero has no markings which is a violation of international law. Even if you should survive the battles at the end you will be hung as a war criminal. But don't let that distract you from your missions to come.:D

Well i have flown alot of aircraft on flight sim over the last 10 years everything from harriers from carriers and F18's to E3 awacs and sea king helo's ive flown fighters tankers transports and passenger jets big and small.

But today i found a little helicopter that is well rather nice to fly.
Ive spent what about 400 hours over 10 years flying helo's thats not alot compaired to well over 15,000 hours in fixed wing aircraft.

So here goes:

This is my MI-8 helicopter boarding at KORD readying up for some training and we also had a duty to observe landings and approaches on vatsim as well which was kind of unusual for me today.

Side view with our main door open obviously we dont have the main 5 blade rotor going have not yet got clearence to start her up.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i213/British_Airways_Captain/Other%20flying/onground.jpg
Frontal view of the MI-8 on the ground shes not a huge helicopter but large (no where near the size of the MI-26) i do want to have a go at trying to fly one of those one day.

Thats me hovering near the fuel storage tanks just off the airport shortly after we had to watch in a 757 from dallas american airlines landed safely and hover taxiied him to the gate.

I just thought I'd drop in and show you guys some of the wacky stuff I fly around.
Note, I am playing full realism, with crashes unchecked. I know when I crash, which is very rarely, but sometimes things happen, so I exit out when I do.

Gee Bee Z "Sportster"
Yup, the notorious Gee Bee, the only plane Doolittle was scared to fly :D
very torquey and nose-heavy, take-offs have to be done with no flaps, and full right rudder, else you will soon find yourself out in the grass!

Dornier DO-X
The famous 12-engined flying boat. Trust me, it takes all 12 to get this thing off the water. the turn you see in the screenie was accomplished after about 10 seconds hard on the stick, no letting up on the turn. It's a TANK in flight, but wonderful on the water taxiing :)
http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/Fastrat91/Sledgehammer36.jpg

And my pride and joy,
the Aerosoft
Hughes H-1
I am simply obsessed with this plane. Its pretty, it flies nice. But don't let it fool you, it is downright mean. The first 10-15 minutes of your flight is solely looking at the panel, changing your mixtures, prop pitches, and making sure you keep your throttle under the red-line in the Manifold pressure. This is a pic of the cockpit, it's very utilitarian. I like that. You can see that I'm running Okey-dokey, by looking at the three gauges to the right of the stick, Manifold pressure is okay, oil temp is in the green, and carburetor temp is well under 4 there, and that's good, a fine plane, well worth the money!

(cross-posted from mod thread)

We were to provide top cover for the poor sods stuck on convoy escort duty down below, climbed up to angels fifteen and sweep along the Kent coast from Dover towards Margate. Jerry showed up shortly after we swung over Deal and laid into the escorts, our leader veered off to port and dived onto some yellow nosed bastards and me and three followed suit. After that, it dissolved into the typical one on one, I covered the skipper for a while and then lost him but found a 109, gave him a seeing too and then found he'd brought a friend who was determined to protect him, I, on the other hand, was not so lucky and had to break away from Jerry, and every time I tried to re-engage one, the other would swing behind me, one of them got a hit on the engine and glycol started spewing all over the shop, tried to continue the dogfight but couldn't aim through the glycol and called it a day. RTB'd and CTD'd.

This is a real crying shame. I am a huuuuuuuge fan of flight sims, and ROF and BoB both look great, but I am in the long forgotten computer game market known as Canada. I checked out EB today at 3 locations, and they were all pretty sparse for games of the PC variety.....

HunterICX

DCG comes with 2 Afrika campaigns:

Tobruk 41
Tobruk 43

the best way to use DCG is by enabling the option to let DCG take over ''DGEN'' and ''NGEN'' so the campaigns will appear in the game itself.

IIJG53 mission action November 15 1943 north of Leningrad. Our mission was to interdict a Soviet column that was planning to cross the frozen sea to retake Kronenstadt:

The column was split into two sections. My wingman and I took the rear of the column whilst the other pair in our section took the lead column.

TarJak
10-19-09, 04:55 AM
The shots are from a co-op mission flown by IIJG53: http://iijg53.com/

The Nav lights are so we don't shoot one another down so they have a real purpose. In IL-2 AI can't see so lights camo etc don't make any difference to them but when you have up to 12 pilots in the air all on the one side it makes it easier to work out who to shoot and who not to.

If you are interested the Aussie schwarm normally flies on Sunday nights at about 8pm AEST.

To the level one should expect them to be in a game released in 2009. If that's how they look on higher settings too, they are more of an step back than forwards. I also dont agree that they are 'hell of a lot better' than IL2's, they are pretty much the same. Blurry mess.

Well if you think IL-2 and RoF ground textures look the same, or even similar then we have a huge difference of opinion, but that's ok

I think the RoF ground serves it's purpose more then adequately, and I have yet to see better in a flight sim... now if they would just re-work the "zippers" they call trenches I would be fully happy with it.

Also, why not use the BI-6? Given enough speed to fire up the Ramjets it can climb almost vertically

1 after I got to a certian altitude, the plane didnt want to clime anymore, the flaps did the job better than the elevators, and also kept it in a nice steady climb.

2 the BI-6 was giveing me problems, and running out of fuel... (plus I was already flying the BI 2 when I thought it up.)

I can't even imagine the terror of a barrage like that creeping up on you. :-?

If they used a barrage at all; looks like they just pounded the general area to dust.

Barrages were invented later in the war and used on a large scale only by the end of the war. Any notion that the massive amounts of guns available could be used for anything other than lobbing a million shells into the other side of no-man's-land or that such bombardments often did more harm than good was lost on most commanders.

Though being bombed constantly for a week is probably worse than facing a barrage of any sort...

Arclight
12-09-09, 02:47 AM
Perhaps. Perhaps there's a limit to how terrified a man can be. I imagine any situation where you're holed up in a fortress, any place really, while it is being blasted to dust all around you, be it by shells or by bombs, would drive any man to his limit.

Not that I would know; I've been lucky to live in a country where armed conflict is a thing of the past. The not so distant past, and for now at least.

Kptlt. Neuerburg
12-09-09, 07:36 AM
The only thing I could think of that would be worse than getting shelled or bombed for weeks on end would be the dreaded mustard gas attacks that happened towards the end of the Great War. The weapon was considered so horrific that it was banned from use in combat ever since.

Oberon
12-09-09, 10:20 AM
Plenty of ways to find your end there. If a mortar didn't land in your trench or the gas attack didn't turn your lungs to mush then was always the option of having to go over the top and landing up either being buried alive by a shell, falling into a shell hole and drowning, getting hit by a bullet or even making it to the other trench and then getting skewered on a bayonet.
Makes me that more amazed that my great-grandfather survived it

We ascended to 5,000 feet over Chaulnes by noon- on April 29, 1918.

http://crickey@crickey.free.fr/screen/screenbm/BM1.jpg

We met our slow and bulky contact less than 15 minutes later near the frontlines.

http://crickey@crickey.free.fr/screen/screenbm/BM3.jpg

The Brits decided they could take us on as we passed into their lines, and so the fight began.

http://crickey@crickey.free.fr/screen/screenbm/BM4.jpg

I brought my guns to bear on one chap and shot him dead in the cockpit.

http://crickey@crickey.free.fr/screen/screenbm/BM5.jpg

Out in the distance, I noticed some Breguets moving in on our positions. The DFW having already absconded home, we decided to engage them.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b338/Philski24/Screenshots/2009_12_12__22_13_35.jpg

The results were less than desirable, as I was sent whirling down to the ground in flames, my wings torn from my body.

Ah, another victim of the Hookdump, yes, this is a dodgy one RM, and I'm afraid I've only been able to rid myself of it one way.
I had this problem trying to join the latest Gulagwaffle campaign, and I suspect that the problem lies with Tigers Sound Mod.
Two questions:
1) Do you use HSFX 4.1?
2) Do you use Tigers Sound Mod v2?

If your answer to the above is both in the affirmative then there is one further question:

1) Did you install the soundmod as directed in the Readme (aka, dumping it all manually into the IL2 folder as opposed to through JSGME)

If the answer to this is also in the affirmative then you'll have to reinstall IL2 and HSFX I'm afraid and rather than install it into the Il2 main directory you'll have to create a JSGME folder and plonk it in there, delete all the random H102JKRY2 named files in it and just let it transfer to the standard sound folder in IL2 like you would a standard sound mod. Unfortunately this means that you lose the flyby sounds but it should...should and don't quote me on this completely because we've only tried one Gulagwaffle mission, but it should rid you of that error.

What is SubsimMachFest? It is our very own short film festival! Welcome to the second Annual Subsim Machinima Short Video Festival. Contenders for the awards will be posted on http://au.youtube.com/user/SubsimMachFest I'm looking for the best 7 minute machinima videos containing a submarine that you can create.

Being Subsim we need a theme for our vid fest and of course it is submarines. It doesn't matter if you don't use a sub sim to make your vid but in the 7 minutes you have to include at least one submarine whether it is simulated or otherwise.

So all you budding machinima makers, crank up your skills for a chance to win one of the following awards:

Best of the Fest
Best Comedy
Best Drama
Best Director
Best Cinematography
Peoples choice

The rules for entries are simple:

Nah, it crashed not because of weather and ATC, it crashed because the cheeseheads shot it down! You must punish them at once with an extensive bombing campaign against major population centers and windmills.

One of my very few successes in WWI combat - I'm not exactly a competent airman. Things don't look too good for the SE5a pilot, who's visible above his aircraft on the left hand side.

There's some damage to the airframe itself other than the burning engines, must be combat damage.

A panel is missing on the nose, damage on the the tailfin, a missing wing, left gear is missing.

And when you do get away from the airbase:

Try #1: get all the way to target, then shot down by Hind.
Try #2: forget engine anti-ice en-route. Subsequent engine-failure makes for a rough emergency landing, leaving you with all rotorblades halved.
Try #3: doorbell rings while en-route: Pizza!. Find yourself splattered across a mountain on return.
Try #4: get there, deal with the targets and go inbound to check and pop some rockets. Turns out there's this tit with a MANPADS behind a tree; trees don't have collision: they block your view, but AI can spot and shoot through them no problem. No missile warning either of course, since the Shark only has RWR. Subsequent explosion causes engine failure and sees you "land" right between 2 vehicles, who promptly riddle you with bullets... at least the ejection seat was still operational.

This sim is so harsh. Absolutely awesome, but harsh.

Only thing I really have problems anymore flying wise is hovering or more precisely understanding it. Same with trim, need some practise. Otherwise I got it quite well, even went in for some low alt town cruising.

As far as the weapons system goes:

For rockets and guns in static mode:
Enable master arm
Select weapon

Reticle pops up on the HUD to aim with.

For tracking (gun and Vikhr)
The above + Uncage Skvahl (display comes alive and you can pan the view around)
Enable laser
Lock target in Skvahl

Line up the helo with target and launch; you'll see a reticle over the target, indicating where the Skvahl is looking, and a larger circle that indicates Vikhr launch window. Gun is a bit more forgiving since it has some degree of free movement.

Enable the laser before locking to get a range. Doesn't matter for Vikhr since it just flies down the beam (no need to lock either, technically), but the gun needs range information. Gun will also properly leed a moving target (if locked).

Range gets stored and changes as you pan around, but this is based on calculations, not actual laser-ranging. Laser-ranging is updated everytime you press the lock button. If you have a group of targets close together, lock 1 to get range and then just pan the Skvahl over next target and fire.

Be carefull with the laser: disable it when you don't need it and try to keep the use of the range finder limited, or it will burn out. First indications of it failing are usually inaccurate rangings and Vikhr loosing track for no aparent reason.

You guys are having fun with DCS Black Shark. I want to try it. :rotfl2:

Dowly
05-24-10, 07:55 AM
Yeh it's fun. Just takes some time to get used to. Your first challenge is to fly the darn thing, you gotta remember that helo in it's natural state is out of control. Fortunately the Kamov has pretty nice autopilot functions that keep the helo somewhat under control, but even with them on prepare to crash alot in the beginning. Once you learn to fly a bit then you have to keep an eye out for the dreaded vortex that will suck you right into the ground if you're not awake.

After you can fly the thing, then it's time to learn to shoot stuff which is luckily much easier.

PS. Don't be scared of the number of switches and buttons, you don't need but a fraction of them to fly and shoot stuff. :yep:

Just occasionally, but could organize it a bit more. I just threw together a mission with several target sites and a convoy heading for your base, fairly straightforward. Nice to practice a bit, without those frustrating things like an enemy helo or plane blowing you away (Shark barely has capability to engage helo, none for fixed-wing).

Could post in BS thread when I'm running a mission. Regulars now are Dowly and Lionclaw, 4th slot available, so feel free to drop in... guess I'll add a few more slots in case we need them. :hmmm:
