They left out Simulator in their title.....:hmmm: perhaps they decided to go with a new title...or does it have a meaning.

What's the point of a non-sim FS? Flying around for no apparent reason?
I think they're just changing the title because it sounds less technical.

"Social" seems to be the key word here, not "simulation".
I'm guessing they want to attract a bigger audience, jumping on the social networking bandwagon. Though there might still be a simulator somewhere in there, maybe a switch between "casual" and "simulation" like in DCS. :hmmm:
Raptor1

So far there are apparently no details about it at all, so let's wait and see how it turns out. If they refrain from using words like 'accessible' we still have a chance.
Arclight
08-17-10, 07:05 AM
Always a chance, sure.
They're not saying "accesible", but things like "inspired by", "compelling socially connected gameplay " and "reinventing".
I dun' want no reinvented, socially connected game inspired by FS. I jus' wants another Flight Simulator. :-?
It's tied to GFWL, so it doesn't exactly get the benefit of my doubt.

I just hope there is some kind of a carrer aspect to it but not manditory internet connection where I have to be social. Choosing to be s one thing but saying I can play unless I play with others always bothered me with a lot of the new titles Like Americas Army 3, Rise of Flight and I think DCS Black Shark also requires internet connections.

Pain in the bottom, but it could be worse.
* think they patched RoF to the same system.

If you lose all power you could try autorotation landing, requires lots of practice to get it right though. :)
But sometimes there's simply no time to react.

Well, one of the engines (the right one) crapped out on me :shifty:
and said before all electronic systems failed, no HUD display, ABRIS off, TV off, heck couldn't even deploy flares or do anything else that required the electronic systems of the Kamov.
and yes, about getting too close....I wasn't aware that I was drifting too close to the target area while setting up the arms of my Kamov.
need to reconfigure some stuff to my joystick.
HunterICX
I take it that the Russians forgot to put in auto-hover on the Kamov or is that one of the gamey aspects of the EE series? I used to get the hover on and duck behind a hill whilst setting up the Hellfire for a pop up and over shot...I think it was a LOAL-HI.
T-72s rarely knew what hit them :haha:
Arclight
08-23-10, 01:34 AM
There's auto-hover alright, but it has the same limitation as all autopilot functions: it can only use about 15% of controls input. That means you need to trim the aircraft close to a stable hover and then the autopilot can take care of the small adjustments needed to keep it in place.
90% of problems people have flying BS is related to not trimming properly. :)

I guess FSX doesn't have hurricanes as a part of the weather modelling, it would be interesting to fly through one in that game.
I guess FSX doesn't have hurricanes as a part of the weather modelling, it would be interesting to fly through one in that game.
FS9, X would probably fry my system :haha:
But yes, you're right, it doesn't model hurricanes, you can probably create one in the weather effects, but the 'real world weather' option seems to miss them...but then again, that is only as good as the weather stations that report it, and they're probably being thrown around in 125mph winds at the moment.
Anyway, intercepted Earl again today from the Bahamas, co-ords approx 25.1N 72.1W, took some southerly crosswinds on the way in, although since I was traveling from the west heading east...it would mean that Earl was being cyclonic...which fails... :hmmm: Anyway, you can't blame the sim, I mean it wasn't developed for nutters like me who like to hunt Hurricanes :haha:

My wife told me I should try using the 40" Sony Bravia we have as a monitor sometime (it has the same native rez as my Samsung 24") but I'm afraid that if I do I'll get used to it and want to keep it in there, and my 24" will look small when I go back to it lol.
Then again, my wife might be telling me to do that because she wants my 24" monitor so she can have a triple monitor setup... :o
Well jeez, make a deal with her. She gets the 24" to have the triple setup and you take the 40" in return (dont forget to mention that she can't change her mind later on :O:).

(Jet is the Lineage business jet version of the E-Jets, skin is user-made)
All in all, the E-Jets live up to Wilco's ERJ. Between the two, I would have to say that the ERJ v2 has a nicer VC and a few other functionalities I prefer; however the E-Jets so far I found both more stable and better-performing. As expected, the two are VERY similar and you can pretty much fly the E-Jets out of the box if you know how to fly the ERJ. There are only a few minor differences, which are easily found and managed. E-Jets are a lot easier to fly thanks to the VNAV functions.

Just a couple questions for you guys. As far as what games these all are, I have FSX but Id like to know what game is the one I see with the screens of the Ka-50 (Black shark is it??) and if you can fly other helos in that sim. Which sim is the one that I see that has all the WWII Planes in it that Im seeing, I would love something like that, and what sim is it that has the WWI planes also?? If it is FSX with added mods, I more or less want a true Combat Flight sim, I had Comanche back in the day and loved it :arrgh!: along with FS 98 (Old school:03:)
And secondly, if I get a computer to handle FSX on full (I can get it on all Medium with good FPS but I want something that can show the game off before I play it that way I can enjoy the scenerey) Id like to know if any one could teach me some of the basics for getting out of situations and stuff, as well as landing/ communicating with the tower etc. Because the base games tutorials were HORRIBLE. at least to me :P
Thanks guys

WWII is probably IL-2 and WWI is most likely Rise of Flight.
Which screenshots are you referring to specifically?
reignofdeath
09-30-10, 01:49 PM
The WWI picture is on this page and the KA-50 Pic is on the next page (with the WWII looking pics right below it) What I liked about that WWII looking sim was that it modeled damage pretty realistically (I saw a few pages back a plane that should barely be able to fly because it had huge gaps in its wings and such.

You have it set to display first post last?
Either way. Yes, the WWI screen on this page is Rise of Flight, and the only WWII screenshots for the last few pages are from IL-2 so I'm assuming it is.

Yeah I do sorry lol, Another thing, I see all these german aircraft and stuff in the IL-2 Screens, I thought IL-2 was only a russian aircraft sim?
Raptor1
09-30-10, 02:09 PM
What's the point of flying Soviet aircraft if there are no German aircraft?
IL-2 (After a whole bunch of expansions, now bundled into a complete pack called IL-2 1946) has many flyable aircraft and quite a few more non-flyable. Not only Soviet and German, but also British, American, Japanese and from a whole bunch of other countries.

Does it need alot of mods to make the gameplay better like Silent Hunter 3,4 and 5? Or is it ready to go and great out of the box??
Raptor1

Well, mods certainly make it better...

09-30-10, 02:34 PM
Well I didnt mean like that, I meant is it ridiculously bugged like the SH series is out of the box? Or is it a very playable sim? I mean I can add mods if need be. But I was just wondering.
And as far as it goes, what would I need to run it smoothly? As of right now my computer can run SH4 on almost all high settings while getting 20 or so FPS in the middle of the ocean and in the middle of a battle. SH3 is a bit odder but I've had explanations as to why so I know why it runs slower, that and Im using a variety of mods on it.
Same with the KA-50 game (I looked it up and it seems to be called DCS: Blackshark?)
Raptor1
09-30-10, 02:36 PM
No, it's not ridiculously bugged, it's enjoyable out of the box (Well, I think, been a while since I played stock).
Shouldn't have problems running it, I think. Black Shark is more demanding, so I really don't know.

Here's some Q&A from DCS's site that might help answer your question:
Q: What are DCS: Black Shark minimum specifications??
A: Windows XP, Vista; CPU P4 2 GHz, RAM 2 GB; Video 256 MB RAM, compatible with DirectX9; 5 GB of HDD space; sound card; DVD ROM; keyboard; and mouse.
Q: Is DCS: Black Shark Windows 7-compatible and take advantage of multi-core processors??
A: We have released patch 1.0.1 which among other things makes DCS: Black Shark fully compatible with Windows 7. DCS: Black Shark uses a modified version of TFCSE simulation engine, which was not originally designed to take advantage of multi-core processor technologies. Nevertheless, such systems do generally provide better game performance as a result of their native capabilities.

It's Flight Simulator X. All of the scenery looks good from high altitude, the closer you get to the ground, the more questionable it looks (unless you have high rez addons for that particular area). I'm running a bunch of mods in FSX as well (REX, GEX, UTX, etc. and a bunch of high rez packs for certain cities/locations)...
Here's a pic of one of the areas I have a high rez pack for (Oahu). It looks really, really nice, but you have to have a fast processor and a lot of RAM to keep framerate up when running some of these packs...

From Free Falcon 5.5.3. The most stable and most enjoyable Free Falcon I've ever played.
Aye the original was a man's simulator and not by all means a kid's game and now it has been vastly improved. It's a real man's flying sim. :O:
I just love those Vipers! US had it right with the Viper. It's the most beautiful single engine plane ever.
It's almost a porn looking at it.
For the most beautiful twin engine fighter I must give the credit to the Russians for their Flanker.
Anyway here's the vipers(look at the curves...oh what a porn LOL). It's amazing the terrain still looking fantastic while they have minimum 3D models on them(note the city view). Ah they used to make really terrific games then.

I just discovered that you can set fire to your own plane in Rise of Flight - I've just bought it and discovered that if you let the engine over heat on and SE5 then there's rather bad consequences:cry:

I have one its a Saitek ST290 Pro (got it at wal mart) but it works fine for me in FSX10. as well as what mods would you guys reccomend?? I hate MANPADS. Easily fooled, but impossible to spot and no warning at all unless you can spot the trail of smoke. :shifty:
A quick flight from Biggin Hill to Duxford, leaving Biggin at about 16:45...it's getting dark, but just enough light to see where I'm going, pass over East London and the Thames and then head north. Fly over Stansted...right, must be getting near Duxford...now where the bloody hell is it? Dammit, where's my GPS...right...oh, you're over there. Where's the lights? No lights? Oh bloody hell...right...thank god for that motorway next to it...no...no..that's too fast, go around do it again...ah, that's better...whoa, watch your roofs cars, and down we are, a little left of center...and up we are again, oh...Spitfire bounce, of course... :damn: and Bump, down we go again...all in once piece, good, now let's find the taxiway and park up...now did I remember a torch? So, load up FSX and set the time and weather to current, spawn myself in my Spit at Duxford with everything off. So, here we go, Master switch on, IFF on, Nav Lights on, Reflective sight on, computer off...huh?
Bloody power cut!! :damn:
Five minutes later the power goes back on again, so we try again and this time make it all the way from Duxford to Norwich...bit of a messy landing, stalled her on approach but managed to wrestle her back to the level before the wheels hit the ground, so a heavy landing but nothing broke so that's something. Taxi'd around, got a little lost and had to do a U-turn, but made it to the parking spot, parked up, started shutting down...and the computer reset...

I can fill her up, but it takes forever and several connects. :-?
Seriously, most difficult thing I ever tried. Having the most trouble with speed, think I'll see if I can separate the throttles; just adjusting 1 engine should give some finer control.
Damo: those shots are bloody gorgeous! I'm also planning to get the PMDG boeing one day, she really does look like an awesome bird (and would probably be pretty easy for me to learn after months of flying the feelthere 737 classic)
Thankyou CCIP, I use the ENBSeries mod to get the darker appearance and bloom, my settings have a minimal impact on FPS. Most people I show screenies to think I edited them in Photoshop or something but that's all in-game. Here's a comparison:

As far as the 737 goes, I love the PMDG, but it's ageing now and I've heard some very good things about the iFly 737 that's recently been released, you may want to search for that too. I'll be sticking to PMDG though, I like the FMC and the handling characteristics and it's a good base for learning my PMDG 747 and MD11 that I splashed out on recently but have not flown too much yet.

It's a C2Q (Q9550) running 3.4GHz, 4GB DDR2 800Mhz and a GTX460. In-game it's all on high with 4x AA and 1280x960, though I disabled transparency AA (TSSAA option in-game) and mirrors, and the displays are on 512 for resolution (the MFCDs, can go to 1024).
Runs well apart from bad weather, had rather big performance drop with that in Blackshark as well.
Judging by your own shots I think you should be able to run it no problem, though that's of course always hard to judge. :hmmm:
Ok thanks, it's just when I upgrade I like to exceed what I really need at the time just to give me a little more lifetime before the next overhaul, a side effect of discovering self building a while ago and never looking back. It seems the time between something being high tech and becoming 'budget' is fast decreasing nowadays, and I get all depressed if my sliders need to take a trip to the left... lol.

Aye, I know where you're coming from. I went to a quad airly quickly, from a dual-core. I kinda stuck to a budget for initial build, but over the past 3 years I've replaced every part.
The bonus is that I now have 2 machines, with the "old" hosting a Minecraft server.
Graphics wise I don't upgrade a lot though. Started with an 8800, and switched to the 460 just recently. Might wanna give the 560 a look if you're thinking about upgrading (not too familiar with ATI), just released, at worst 10% faster and at best 40%.
(of course, the "permission" I am waiting for is the game to stop CTD'ing every single time I try to do a ramp start :damn:)Is there any logic to it? Specific event or time? :hmmm:
Is there any logic to it? Specific event or time? :hmmm:
Nah, it's completely random, I think I've done 6 ramp starts in total with 5 of them resulting to a CTD at some point. Usually it's towards the end when I have both engines running and setting up the MFCD's, but I've had two CTD's while taxi'ing aswell.
With ~5hrs of total flight time, I've gotten only one crash while being airborne.

Seriously, how do they model bailing out in this game? Do you always get captured, always get rescued, or is there a percentage chance...? It always annoyed me how in some flight sims you get to continue the campaign even when you bail over enemy territory.

If he ejects he lives, though a missile detonating near the canopy may well kill instantly.
In the campaign you progress if you complete the mission (and move back if you fail), simple as that (Blackshark at least, havent gotten into campaign yet since it's still beta). You can set a variable for "dead is dead", but ejecting over enemy territory is not a factor. Just pretend they send the SAR in after you. ;)
Finally after the third try. A succesful landing!

Don't think so as the F84 has NO acceleration.:dead:
Without the additional rocket boost on one version you've got no chance to get it to take off speed before reaching the end of the runway. At least not with fuel and armament. The F86 on the other hand has a very strange flight model. Definitely not anything I would call realistic. maybe it's best you don't temper with the mod planes until you've gained some experience with the "real" aircraft as you might get used to their spoiled Fms too much and won't be able to handle a plane with a proper FM.
Hope this didn't sound arrogant and/or smartassy (is this even a word?)...well I could live with smartassy but still.....:O:

Well, that's because the F-84 had a special 'dirt-sniffer' in the intake on the nose that detected when the end of the runway was coming up and then took the brakes off. :03::O: They didn't call it the Lead Sled for nothing. Still, it's a bit faster than the 262s I was used to, so that probably didn't help. :03:

IIRC Arc, the A-10 might be able to fly fine with part of the tail gone like that, I believe it was designed so that if one tail section went you could fly the plane on the other. Likewise the electronic control system has a manual backup. It's designed to go through the wringer and come out again. Not sure how that applies to DCS...bloody well wish I could find out though... :hmmm:
Yes, the A-10 has a very solid manual reversion system, iirc you can actually even fly it just by cables. I recall reading a story from the Gulf War where an A-10 successfully returned to base, after 1 hour flight, with the hydraulic system shot up and half a wing missing.
Arclight
02-09-11, 04:30 PM
Well, yes, considering the fact the plane flew on after my ejection, it's safe to say it wasn't all that bothered overall.
And yeah, hydraulic assisted control surfaces. 1 system for the left and one for the right iirc, with the possibility to control the plane using the electric trim motors, though that really doesn't give the control needed for a landing.
Just couldn't control the thing: needed heavy rudder to get it straight, so much so that the aircraft became terribly unstable. Prolly my lack of flying experience, but definetly wouldn't have landed it in one piece... so I opted for the high Gs of the ejection seat rather than from an impact with terra firma.
(flying on half a wing is a lot easier than half a tail, can tell you that much)

Just had a quick go on IL2, managed to make a successful landing with one wheel, a fuel leak and jammed rudder controls, pretty impressed I didn't turn into a fireball.

A nice little flight from Coltishall to some naval airfield in Holland (I think), where I discovered the runway was not B-17 length and overrun it...but no damage caused, except for a bit to the cowl flaps which was fixed easily enough in the hangar. Engines 3 and 4 are acting up a little though, 3 in particular seems to run hot...have to keep an eye on them.

When Japan was hit by the Tsunami, one of the places that was heavily damaged was the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force's Matsushima Air Base in Miyagi Prefecture, which was only about 80 miles from the epicentre of the quake. The tsunami damaged or destroyed several of the base's Kawasaki F-4s and Mitsubishi F-2s (basically a Japanese made F-16). It also was the home of a collection of vintage planes including an F-86, F-104 and Texan among others. A small piece of good news is the JSDF Blue Impulse display team was not there at the time so their planes were spared. I just thought I would mention it here because it is not important enough for the "real" discussion thread in comparison to everything else going on in Japan right now.

Just started a career in the RFC in August 1917. I was assigned wingman for a 2 ship CAP over a bridge that was likely to be attacked by German aircraft.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d54/iambecomelife/MWSnap0172011-03-2205_49_19.jpg
Idiot Captain Allenby pranged his aircraft literally six seconds into the mission (body count: one). Decided to save the mourning for later and proceeded with the mission.
Sure enough, three German two seaters dropped a load dead center on the bridge (time compression flaw!), with disastrous consequences for the civilians and livestock nearby.
I picked on Tail End Charlie, shooting him full of holes. No easy task when you're flying a one gun Sopwith. His friends bravely left him to his fate; eventually I wounded his gunner & he suffered a structural failure before crashing behind our lines. Thanks to my Pup's anemic horsepower, the other two huns got off scot free, apart from having to see their buddy killed. Wish I had an SE5a.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d54/iambecomelife/MWSnap0152011-03-2205_46_58.jpg
Returned to the airfield to find out that the Captain had not survived his accident, and that the bridge was in ruins. Another day, another dollar (or is it shilling?)
Anyway, final death toll:
1 Sopwith Scout (crashed)
1 RFC Pilot, Capt. Allenby (killed)
1 Civilian Worker (killed)
1 Civilian Worker (injured)
2 Sheep (killed)
1 Bridge (destroyed)
1 Aviatik Bomber (shot down)
1 German Pilot (killed)
1 German Gunner (killed)
And yes, the game does in fact keep track of animal deaths in the debriefing. Is that level of detail impressive, or is it just creepy...?

Yes, but just a little bit. A filter that makes it look like a screenshot from a movie, and some definition. Nice little flight in my B-17 back from De Kooy airfield in Holland to RAF Woodbridge in the UK. Had to use up all the runway at De Kooy to take off and left my payload there, I barely landed the damn thing when I arrived so I figured taking off would be touch and go...it was. :haha:
Nice calm flight across the North Sea, bit of turbulence here and there. Arrived over the Suffolk coast and couldn't find RAF Woodbridge, then realised the stupid sim hadn't loaded it in, corrected that and then wheeled around for an approach. Came in a bit too low and bounced merrily down the runway, wrecking the tailwheel and damaging the landing gear motor in the process.
My second man suggested I do some touch and gos before our next landing...I think I might take him up on the offer.
Anyway, safe and sound tucked up at RAF Woodbridge:

Yeah, there is a blank grey skin, but template is a PSD file that has all the rivets, panels etc. etc. on separate layers, so you can paint "under" them so to keep all the details you couldn't otherwise.

Knock yourself out :haha:
In all seriousness though, one of the 91st TFS in Euro camo with the hog face on the front please. Just how I remember them. :yeah:

I'm sure there's something very similar to that already, just needs the Woodbridge markings. I'll have to dig out all my old airshow pics to have a better look - these t'interweb ones from google aren't so great.
Not in a rush, right? :DL

That's the bugger but with the warthog face. :yeah:
No rush at all...I don't even have the game at the moment! :har:

Phew, saves me embarrassing myself, just need to change the base code to WR from EL, change the fin-flash and maybe dumb-down the TAC badge. Thank you Tom Weiss :yeah:

Alrighty then, work in progress. All I've done so far is removed any previous badges, code and fin flashes and replace the base code and flashes.
About the flashes, firstly don't look too close as the inside and outside on the fins aren't aligned, secondly I've come to realise that the originals never had the flash in the inside of the fin! :damn: I also need to extend the flash further so it encompasses the rudder itself - I just don't know which bit that is at the moment, it's not straightforward!
Finally, for tonight, added a name. An RAF pilot on an exchange tour.
Needs polishing, and the requested toothy mouth :D

A good landing...well...aside from the nosing over due to excessive braking...but considering my number two engine was dead after catching fire after take-off, and my port undercarriage was broken which meant my number one engine was smashed into the ground on landing...I think it was quite good.
