So after seeing all these wonderful pictures, where can I get some real nice realistic looking skins for IL-2, or better yet, is there a tool where I can do the skins myself??

Kptlt. Neuerburg

For the skins that I've made for IL-2 I used a program called Gimp http://www.gimp.org/, also theres a tutoral on how to make skins using Gimp out there some where.

The other day I was lying in bed, it was a sunny morning and I was contemplating getting up, when I heard a noise...it was familiar...where had I heard this noise before? Band of Brothers?

Wait...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyUJIC6I7ic&feature=related

WTF?!

A quick dash out of bed gave me the view of a DC-3 flying overhead at about 150ft, wow!

She's been over about three times since, alas I have only got a good look at the back of her, but the sound and shape confirms it to be a DC-3. We've had one fly over before, we think there's a chap in Holland who owns her and he brings her over from time to time, but this is the first time he's come over so low.

So...

I just had to do a flight from Rotterdam to Bentwaters in a C-47 on FSX...aaaand I did it, landed her too...although it was a bit...of a long one and a bit hard on the brakes...but she didn't ground-flip so that's always a good thing :haha:

Two FS9 galleries of around 20 pics each. The first is preparing a Boeing 737/BJ at the gate in nightly Leipzig, taxing, flying, and then approaching Frankfurt by night, with focus on illustrating the virtual cockpit of iFly's 737.

http://imageshack.us/g/840/b01cp.jpg/

The second, again around 20 pics, is a Lufthansa Boeing 737/700 standing at the gate of Mega-Airport Zurich, zoomed in on from orbit, with some random impressions from another approach to Zurich by night at the end. Service action around the plane provided by AES.

UP3 RC3= UlstraPack3 Release Candidate 3 though I beleive they are up to RC4 now. It's a bit like GWX for IL2.

The skin giving the markings is a custom job.

You might want to look at tweaking your video settings a bit to get the right look for the effects and terrain as well.

Took off from Dare Regional Airport near Manteo, and headed south-south-west towards Cape Lookout where I know Irene has made landfall.
Strong winds and rain at Manteo but then scattered rain and sunshine on the way to Cape Lookout...conclusion - FSX does not like Hurricanes, even with ASE installed. Turned back after heading a bit south of Cape Lookout and then FSX crashed. Conclusion - FSX really does not like Hurricanes.

I believe it's on high realism, radiators, not sure about auto-mixture because the Albatros D.V doesn't have mixture apparently.

I'm quite enjoying it, it feels a lot like putting on an old pair of gloves not worn since OFF was free (Phase 2 IIRC), however the handling is certainly a par above OFF at that phase, the Albatros is a much more forgiving aircraft than the Spad.

Multiplayer is beautiful, no warping, no major lag, everything ran just lovely.

The only gripe I have is the view panning, but that has been fixed with Newview, which I'm going to have to tweak because I don't like the blind spot at about 170 to 200 degrees behind me...I just know it's going to hide an SE.5 one day.

OK, and now again for the idiots (that would be me...) how do I aim in this sim? Is there something like the Il2 shift+F1 trick? I was just doing the training mission where you have to shoot down that German balloon and my gun sights in the SPAD were obscured by the central pillar of the wind shield. I couldn't even see my target when diving at it and the game seems to have a habit of ignoring key commands to move the head when track ir is active. So how do you aim?:damn:

Arclight
09-06-11, 06:02 PM
If you have TIR, displace your head to line up the sights. ;)

Should be a slider in the hangar to set the 0-distance.

It mostly comes from experience though. Maneuvering the plane while looking about and then trying to line up the sight is not practical. You'll get a feel where the bullets go and just aim like that.

(for example, in the Albatross I use the fat part of the center post in close range lead turns, can see it in the shots above)

Raptor1
09-06-11, 06:17 PM
I haven't seen a button that lines you up with the gunsight like in IL-2. Usually I aim by whatever is convenient, since the Albatros D.V, for example, doesn't have a real gunsight (Well, there is one you can add onto it, but it's useless).

Oh, and do note that the SPAD has awful visibility. The upper wing and the fuselage just obscure everything (though the cockpit and instruments are pretty fancy). The Albatros is much better in that regard.

Whenever I notice I have a structural wing damage I usually lower my speed to a minimum, head for as low altitude as I possibly can get without snuffing it and get outta the combat!

Also, every aircraft has it advantages-cons. The SPAD's don't have the best visibility no, but they do have the speed and if handled correctly, you'll be able to get out of trouble most of the times. However, as I stated before, the SPAD VII has a very nasty spin, which I've never been able to get out of yet, so be warned!

LoL at Hunter!

Thanks, I thought so but with the inability of the WWI birds to raise their noses I find it pretty difficult to attack from below...

I've noticed this once. Brought down a Camel in one pass, was mighty proud of it too! Dunno why I didn't get the kill credit. Could be the same they have in OFF; that someone has to see it, but if this is the case, then they are very subtle with it, because there is no mention of such a system :O:

Or the Albatros, as pictured above

Just read this on the RoF site - However, there was still no confidence in low wing attachment and pilots refused to perform steep dives in combat. Now I know, I'll not be doing it (much) again! :smug:

And this for your N.17 These so called "one-and-half-wings" designs, like the N17, had an obvious design defect. Because the lower wings only contained one spar, the lower wing tended to fold and break off during high speed dives and maneuvers. There are only two known occasions when pilots made successful landings after losing their lower wings. Similar German designs suffered from this same problem.

That will save that position as your "centre view". Whenever you reset your view you will return to that position. How not to take off.

I pulled my landing gear up and started to stall directly afterwords, too late to put the gear back down, ended up belly sliding the rest of the runway.

I have to say I'm really enjoying the B377 by A2A. I'm hoping they'll make more commercial craft. I'd like a DC-7 or a DC-3.

As I'm severly lacking in my knowledge of dropping munitions on enemies(I only really know how to fire the GUA and AIM-9's) I load up the unguided bombs tutorial. I plan on dropping all my munitions and then heading towards the nearest friendly base to practice landing. Fate had other plans.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a108/Tetsou88/Screen_111030_182636.jpg Here's a shot of an MK-82AIR coming down on some tents. Managed to take two tents out. You can see my other crater which took out a tank in the center of the runway.

As these were my last MK-82AIR's I switch over to the regular MK-82's and get ready to practice CCIP CR 3/9 mode. I come back around and enter a dive, since the piper was looking like it was going to overshoot the target I dropped the dive a little more and released the bombs.

A chain of events flashed before my eyes, first Betty started telling me to pull up, then the release piper went funky, and then there was an explosion, and I was no more.

Here's the aftermath. In the background you can see the two tents my last MK-82AIR took out, in the foreground you can see what's left of me.

Barely visible, but there are 3 boats down there. I had the urge to buzz them, but decided against it.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a108/Tetsou88/Screen_111030_231924.jpg
Home safe and sound with all the systems off. The landing was a close one, on the first run I'm almost down when the tower told me to go around. Mind you I touch down (in the middle of the runway :haha:) a second later, but I know that I'm not going to have enough runway to stop, so I throw the throttle back into full, retract the speed brake, and go around. The picture of the boats is actually from my go around approach. I come around again, meet up with the runway almost at the half way marker(bastard plane just kept floating). I had full speed brakes, flaps, and brakes and I still wasn't stopping. The end of the runway was approaching fast so I turned the wheel a little back and forth. Some frightening tire screeching sounds later and I'm at a complete stop. Luckily I did not blow any of my tires, I turn the plane around and taxi into position.

Tomorrow I take on the Maverick training mission!

@Dowly, if you want screenshots without the little information bar at the bottom, hit LShift+Y. I'm fairly positive It's LSHIFT, but to be fair I did press LCTRL+Y and Lalt+Y too, so It could be one of the three. It's in the controls as Turn off or Remove Info bar.

Visually using TAD and navpoint I had set to the AF.

Of course, I didn't remember that the navpoint is on the center of the AF, instead of the
start of the runway, so I had to do some quick maneuvers around the time I
saw the runway number flash past my right window. :haha:

Hard right rudder, nose down (had around 100m altitude at that point), managed
quite a smooth first touchdown (as in, didn't break anything), but the angle
I came in made me bounce and lost the left wing on final touchdown.

Practicing guys? That's cheatin'! :O:

I can successfully deploy cannon, sidewinder, one mav (never two?), cluster bombs. I can't deploy second or more mav (I'm usually in the ground or on fire by now!), or any guided munition like the Mk-82.

CBUs my favourite - a nice coverge for taking out soft targets, occasionally it'll take out a T-55 too. :yeah:

Must practice myself, but not tonight - BF3 finally arrived through my letterbox!

Hey! It's not cheating when everyone else(save dowly :O:) can kill things better than I can.

I just finished the Maverick tutorial and managed to kill 4 targets with my 4 mavericks. Last target that died wasn't the one I wanted to kill(I had been trying to get a second T-52 farther up) but the aiming with the Maverick is a bit of a pain. So I settled on another target that it wanted to lock onto.

There would be pictures, but I failed to take them while flying, and then failed to realize I couldn't view tracks for tutorial missions.

Today I decided to put my newly learned Mark Point/Maverick targeting knowledge to the test and loaded up the Sitting ducks mission(again).

I successfully took out the Shilka, two apcs, and a Ural with the Mavericks. I followed up with two or three gun runs and wiped out the soft targets. Feeling rather proud of my damage dealing abilities, I head towards the runway to practice landing. Things didn't go smoothly.

Yes I know I flew the runway the wrong way.

Ah, that's the ERJ from Feelthere, didn't recognize it, despite owning the plane myself(FSX version).

I think I saw one today, not sure on the exact plane but it looked like an ERJ, was landing at KMIA, also saw several Boeing's, mostly the medium to long range versions. The hour I spent stuck in rush-hour traffic in pouring rain at least had the benefit of plane spotting.

After flying big jet airliners, and planes that pretty much flied themselves the last couple days, I decided to whip out the BN-2 Islander and do some fly arounds of the Grenadines. I really only flew around Mustique island this time, but I'm going to eventually fly all the islands.

Sitting at TVSM starting up the plane. In the background you can see the slope this runway has.

View of the airport in the background
You can barely see it because of all the trees, it's directly below and parallel to my aircraft

I have to say I'm in love with this payware, there's flying birds, parked sail boats, it's all very nice. I found a freeware package that supplements this one by making all the Caribbean islands look nice. Next time I fly this area, I need to remember to switch REX into tropical mode so I can get the beautiful light blue sea.

Had a play with FSX for the first time in a while the other day, dawn flight in a 707 from Sion to Milan Malpensa, swap to the ERJ for a leg down to Ancona.

Climb out from Sion, looks harder from the tower than from the cockpit.
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/8716/707siondepam.jpg

Cleared the mountains, now to point in the right direction for the descent to Italy.
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/6829/707sionclimbam.jpg

Touchdown at Malpensa - not the most grateful but I blame moving to external view to take the screenie. Honestly.
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/5199/707milmalland.jpg

Right, into the modern era. On the far left is the Adriatic, on the right is the Ligurian Sea, just missing out on seeing Corsica.
http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/9170/erjmilancleg.jpg

Flew towards Rimini and desended through 10k feet ready to talk to Ancona, last screenie was this -
http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/7744/erjancdecent.jpg

And then FSX crashed with some Nvidia error .

I've been eye-ing their products lately. Awesome exterior models, although I wonder how they're systems/flight dynamics compare to PMDG.

I'm eye-ing their 777 as no one else seems to be making one, which is a bit funny considering it's one of the most popular with airlines.

I don't know about the dynamics side of it, but I think the systems side is less 'authentic' that PMDG's stuff - from what I've gleaned from Skybird's threads anyway.

I get in and fly, I don't spend 20 mins running up systems like (I think) PDMG or Aerosoft do. I'm sure I could if I wanted but I don't. I get enough of that in A-10. :D

As with all my posts, I do reserve the right to be completely wrong. :arrgh!:

I would check out the demo to see, but from my understanding the demo is pretty much just an external model.

You're right about out of place, though actually the shots are taken not at Pearl but in the Solomons and New Guinea :)

I'll have to fix that today though and actually add some of Hawaii.

All freeware, actually! The nicest of them, the P-40, is formerly payware, but has long been released for free: http://www.irissimulations.com/product-classics-p40.php

Iris have made some really nice warbird models that are are now free, but still good by FS9 standards. All their FSX models are payware though.

[edit - actually I'm wrong on that - they also have a free Warhawk for FSX: http://www.irissimulations.com/product-classics-p40war.php ]

Nice shots CCIP! Particularly like the first 5.

Are you a screenshot artist? Are you interested in making art from your shots? Are you interested in learning more about how to make great screenshots? Check out http://www.screenshotworld.com (http://www.screenshotworld.com/)

It's a great community where you can learn a lot and have some fun showing off your artistry.

We have set up a specific thread for Silent Hunter series but there are also threads for flight sims, sci-fi and other games. Some great art coming out over there that is worth a look.

I've not really had the time or interest for heavy screenshot retouching lately, but someday perhaps.
