Flew out of Vancouver and headed North through the mountains. I came across a large frozen lake, which I now believe is Lake Chilko. I then asked myself a question I'd never even though of before - can I land on ice in FSX? :hmmm:

And that worked too, good job they haven't figured out how to give the ice weight limits! :D

HB's CO after landing an E-3 on a frozen lake..
"What the bleep were you thinking?"
"Well it looked like fun sir."
"Well you're damn lucky Microsoft didn't bother to try to model ice in any realistic fashion. We'd be out a 30 million dollar aircraft, and you and your crew would be pilotcicles."
Herr-Berbunch
01-11-12, 01:57 PM
That conversion would be one of the easier ones, the A-10s (mine and others') come back (sometimes) much worse than an E-3 with an icing issue and a flooded engine or four. :D

True, but the A-10 was designed to fly with nothing left but the gun the cockpit and a quarter of the fuselage.... An E-3 not so much....lol

Someone should've told DCS that, they don't seem to have modelled that correctly - they're insistent that I also need engines!!! Amatuers.

This isn't really much of a screenshot, but it's kind of a big deal for me, since this is my first confirmed kill after not flying for about four years. The combination of rusty flying skills and using much higher difficulty settings than I used to made this a huge challenge. I chased this guy for about 15 minutes, staying right on his tail but never getting good hits until the very end, when I had run out of ammo in my machine guns and had only a few rounds left in the nose cannon. Since the I-16 can easily outclimb the Morane, I almost gave up the chase when he pulled up, but I said the heck with it, yanked the stick back, and got a beautiful shot right into his belly. I was making this face :D for a good five minutes afterward.

I too still like to fly FSX:yeah:
As for X-Plane 10, it looks great down to the smallest detail such as the road traffic wil actually drive routs on the road and I think the roads will be modeled after real roads but the cities will all be auto-generated, so not modeled after any city
I am still waiting for more info on MS Flight. That one sounds promising.

Okay, I know this is hugely Off Topic, but I just found this amazing thing on Wikipedia. It's quite large, so I will link it rather than post it as a picture. What is it? Well it's a visual representation of the number of British aircraft used during the big raid on Dresden in 1945. Imagine seeing that in a flight sim one day! :o
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/38/Dresden_Lancasters-900px.PNG
Herr-Berbunch
01-19-12, 03:01 PM
Similarly off-topic, at Brize Norton's civvy flying club they have a photo of some 30+ (a guess, it's been a while since I've seen it) Horsa gliders all vying for the same airfield. :o No go-arounds, just land, and if the glider just in front stops quicker than you
Not quite that big, but BoB II's major raids can be really breathtaking in scale - we're still talking hundreds of aircraft. And it actually doesn't require a supercomputer to run and looks darn nice :yep:
As far as I know, big raids aren't a 'new' thing either, it's actually that most newer games (like IL-2) have regressed in terms of numbers lately. EAW for example, from what I recall, was also known to have supported massive packages.

The last and desperate fight of German pilots to defend the motherland against the USAAF bombers. So desperate, that even a damaged plane, that has lost a landing gear, has the engine damaged and is leaking fuel rolls towards the combat, ready to fight till the last bullet.

Another bombing mission in the rain...this time a rail-station! Unfortunately, we didn't really hit anything of importance (unless you count grass as a vital resource for the war industry) but at least we made it back unscratched! Curiously enough, the next day we were tasked to attack the same place! A consequence for not being able to raze the place the first time, or pure randomness? I hope the first, but think the latter :haha:

I'm glad you guys can get CoD to function right. I can't get the bloody game to hold configs. It hates my Warthog, my CH fighterstick even more. The software ignores deadzones that I either setup in game, or with my controllers' software. It looks great, but I have never had so many issues with a sim before. I would say it is hardware, but IL2 1946, A-10C, and BS all read my sticks correctly..
:har: Good work Hunter, I must try landing with the 109, see how fragile that undercarriage really is :D
Hawk, yeah CloD is a intemperate mistress and it's questionable how much more support she is going to get after Battle for Moscow comes out, but there's a lot of promise there. I just wish I could get a few more frames out of her...but I think it's a OS issue (again).

we both spiralled down to very low altitude near the coastal cliffs as he was fighting to stay out of my sights I was fighting to keep the thing under my control as it tended to flip and spiral down into water...when I did lose it a bit I managed to recover the aircraft but unfortunately I did not recover from the smack I made into the cliffs of Dover that followed shortly after :haha:

Nice shots CCIP. And I just noticed your down the road from me (401). Anyways do you just like US Airways or do you fly for a VA?
Good old 401 and all the time I've spent on it :O:
It's sort of like my one-man VA - I always fly actual scheduled routes and use FSPassengers, and so it only made sense that I would want to get in on an airline and stick with it. I ended up semi-randomly picking US airways back in the day (liked their early 2000s livery on some of the first payware planes I bought), and have since flown 400+ hours on Boeing and Embraer jets doing their routes. I keep meaning to add Airbus to that list, but keeping my skills sharp in even a couple of complex planes is enough work!
I might join an actual VA someday, but I like the flexibility of managing my own rules.

AA x 8 (Box filter)
AF x 16
most of the other sliders are set to performance.

I am glad you asked... After playing around with the settings, I have some strange behaviour in - game. All the water is gone... no lakes, no rivers :hmmm:
My current settings are those:
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2742/picture001ov.jpg
http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/7465/picture002vo.jpg
The planes look beautiful in - game...:D
Edit: I tried now with the same settings and the water comes and goes and I found some texture - flickering in the cockpit...
Another edit: Went back to 4x AA and 8x AF:
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/7265/il2fb2012020818125546.jpg
I can live with that...
Your problem is most likely ATI or more specifically the Catalyst AI, which can't
be turned off anymore from the control panel. Battled ages to get AA *kinda
working in Black Shark 1. :nope:
*as in, it worked when it felt like it.

...this
I made good experiences with Omega drivers, but they don't seem to support 64 bit and development seems to be ended:nope:
Edit: OK, before playing around with the driver for the rest of my life, I'd better play the game:

This is as far as I can get it. Nice reflections...

yeah the Catalyst AI is junk...so I keep it on performance and that box unticked.
the AA issue I've had in Black shark was just a case of trying a different driver...as with some drivers they tend to mess a game up.
@Danasan,
Water gone or is it flickering?
and what card do you have?
I'll give you my full settings:
AA: x8 (Box Filter)
AF: x16
Tesselation: AMD optimized
Catalyst AI: Performance and the box unticked (don't bother with the Catalyst AI)
Mipmap: Quality
Vsync: Off
AA mode: Multi Sample AA
OpenGL triple Buffer: unticked (off)

Like it very much. :yeah:
Always liked the "early" (BoB) camos the 109's had.
And I have to congratulate you. You've picked the talent very quickly.
(based on what you've shown here at Subsim.com of course)
Say, do you take requests? I might have something in mind. Tho, I can't pay you anything, being the poor little git and all that, but if you are interested,
throw me a PM and I try to give you as much details as I can. It's a late war ETO WWII thingy.

Really didn't tweak much, but I found out how to turn off the Info Box and that throttle box that is in the corners of screen. Never couold understand why they put those in there, always messed up great screen shots I thought. It is suggested that you go into the main CoD folder and make a copy of the userconfig, and save it somewhere. Then when you are in the sim flying some where, hold down the Left Alt key, then right click on the Info Box, you will get another window where you can close it. Select Close and its gone. Do the same for the throttle box in the left lower corner of the screen. One warning though, not sure how to turn them back on, but don't know why you would want to?
Now I'm trying to find the parameters that dictate how close you can zoom in, but haven't found it yet, seems to me we can zoom in closer in IL 46 then CoD.

Excellent!
Now all they have to do is spell Brightlingsea, Sheerness, Faversham, Canterbury, and Folkestone correct and they'll be sorted... :O:
They might want to move 'Canterberry' a smidge further north, it and the Stour too, they're a bit too far to the south, they're encroaching on Lower Hardres.
I know, I know, I'm picky but I was born in that county so I have an excuse, you should have heard me when we were flying Canonuks Channel map in the Lolwaffles, gave them a guided tour of the bloody Kentish Weald I did! :haha:
Pity it doesn't go further north too, could have added the Aldeburgh Aerodrome...not that it saw much action. The most action in fact was shooting down Zeppelin L48. But still... :O:

Love the Harrier shots, what Harrier pack is that?
Also, FYI on IL2, try not to lower gear over speeds of 300kmh, it doesn't end well as you have seen, likewise flaps. Not sure what the MPH version is...I think about 140mph off the top of my head, trying to remember what it says next to the gear indicator in the Spitfire.
GSpector
03-02-12, 12:31 AM
If the spped in Km/H is 300, then MPH = 186.41 :know:
I too have experienced the loss of aircraft parts while flying a bit to fast in the past, LOL:D
HunterICX
03-02-12, 05:12 AM
Lower Flaps only when under 300 Km/h
Lower Gear around 200 - 220 km/h (around 130 - 140 mph)
and I think you might want to setup a Game profile in your Nvidia control panel for IL2 1946 to crank up the AA and AF settings for that you're letting that card sleep while playing IL2 and ofcourse the game will look a lot nicer and smoother when you've enabled that.

Aargh, reinstalled it all this morning but forgot about the 4.10.1 patch, can't seem to find it. 242 points me to softpedia but that links somwhere eternally timing-out. Anyone know of another location?
@Oberon - the Harrier is Wilco's, but I still don't have FSUIPC installed yet so the nozzels move but thrust isn't altered. Another thing on my to-do list. It's very stable to fly - maybe that'll change with the thrust direction. I know the GR3s weren't easy to fly IRL, many lost on the runways of Wittering and Wildenrath (have you seen what Siemens have done to that place!) so I was expecting a bit more of a bumpy ride. Had it for a while but only installed a few weeks ago.

Diary of Group Captian Greeing, 303 Polish Squadron R.A.F.
6 September 1940.
This moring we recived news that something big, really big was expected but no-one knew when or where it would come from.
10:25AM
Operations has got a call from Group, radar reports a massive fromation of enemy aircraft forming up in the Calais area and are heading NNW towards London. We where ordered to take off and get up to 22,000ft.
http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/4309/07032012215359.jpg
The German formation heads across the Channel.
10:30
We assembled for a quick breifing from the CO. "We know that this large formation is heading for London. It is your job to get up there and shoot down as many of the Hun bombers as possible before they get to their target. There will be other fighter groups in the air. Remember this is the largest raid to date that the Luftwaffe has sent up. If your plane does get shot down try to crash land so it can be repaired, if not well I hope all of you have been brushing up on your English. Now off you go then!!"
10:42
We got in our Hurricanes and started up. After checking to make sure everything was working we taxied and took off.
11:32
After orbiting the suburbs of London for several minutes I began to hear the radio suddenly come alive with shouts of "109s!!, and fighters,3 o' clock high!". I was constantly looking about wondering where the hell these fighters where, then suddenly at my 12 o' clock I see a HUGE formation of planes heading towards us.
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/991/07032012222944.jpg
The first enemy bombers are sighted.
As we move in closer the dots, grow larger and larger until I see that these planes are He-111s. I quickly order my wingmen to split up and attack the Hun bombers. We yell our battle cry "Dla Polski!!!" For Poland, to which we recived a curt reply "Slience in Polish!!!".
I watch as the bomber formation passes, then I turned and climbed to get on the tail of one of the He-111s. I move my Hurricane left and right to thow off the gunners aim. I fire a four second burst in the bomber, the Hurricanes eight .303 machine guns spark to life. I raked the bomber from right to left, killling the top gunner and smoked both engines. The bomber shutters as it falls out of the formation.
http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/4968/07032012223117g.jpg
One of the He-111s to fall from the Hurricanes of 303 Sqdn.
As I turn to engage another 111 I can still hear though the radio the dogfight that is going one else where over Southern England. I think of what sort of hell it must be for those other pilots who are dueling in the air. Soon I'm bought back into my own fight, my Hurricane is rattled by the top gunner of another 111 at my 1 o' clock low. I turn and dive again raking the from side to side, he too falls away. I roll left and target another 111, damaging his left engine which begins to trail smoke.
I dive below him and to the right, I then spot another 111 climbing and turning to the right. So I follow, I press the trigger on the stick. The 111s right engine begins the trail thick grey smoke. I move to fire at the left engine but then nothing. Out of ammunition, I roll upside down and dive away. Else where the battle still rages and it almosts seems like we're losing the fight.
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/1940/07032012224904.jpg
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/4825/07032012224923.jpg
Else where the battle rages.
Through all the chatter, screaming and yelling on the radio, I make contact with my wingmen. My number two has claimed 3 ememy bombers and another 3 damaged, number three reports that he got 2-4 enemy bombers but his engine was badly shot up and had to RTB. Number four was missing and neither of the two who where still flying had seen him go down. I became worried about what had happened to him.
13:21
I'm finally back on the ground and intact. So myself and my wingmen went to get debrifed. I had claimed four He-111s shot down, my number two reported 3 downed,3 damaged, and my number three claimed 2 downed. I also reported that one pilot was missing and presumed lost.
Just as I finished speaking the telephone rang. "Kellett here. Yes. What do you mean, you have one of our chaps down there? Who? Grzeszczak? Yes we have a man by that name. He's where?! At the Sevenoaks police station, what on Earth is he doing there?! A farmer with a pitchfork brought him in hum? Claimed he was a German, 'cause he didn't speak English proper.. Yes,yes we'll send someone for him. Good bye."
"Well Greeing, it seems that a farmer found your missing wingman. Dismissed."
16:00
I look back at the events of today and have for the first time realized how quickly combat goes by. We got lucky today, but tomorrow it could all end. One just never knows.....

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/9587/ukmilpumapyramids1.jpg
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/8979/ukmilpumapyramids2.jpg
Followed by a fully laden 41 Sqn FGR Mk. 2 Phantom at Bruggen (runway's closed in FSX!!!), a few circuits before heading to the UK - I thought I'd head due west and crossed the channel between Calais and Lydd before heading up to Wattisham for a full-stop landing. There appears, in FSX, to be a great big control tower in the middle of the runway at Wattisham. :damn:

No more FSX shots from me for the time being - uninstalled the whole kit and caboodle inc. all existing screenshots. I'll reinstall in due course but will be more selective with my add-ons - I realised the other day that 90+ Gig is just too much HD space to use for one program I perhaps run once per week for an hour.

It's for IL-2: 1946, only compatible with offline games, adds more maps and skins - especially if you add the FBDSM mods also. Think it requires UP3 but multi-install is a piece of cake. I use ModAct and from there choose either MP with HSFX or SP with UP3 or DBW, bog-standard game is also available.
I think the biggest thing it brings to the party is IL-2: 1916 (guess when that is set?), and JetWar 1956 (...again...?).
I think, but could be wrong, that TarJak uses it and so may know much more about it than moi. :hmmm:

This plane was flown by U.S. Marine Corps Major John H. Glenn and dubbed "MiG Mad Marine". I had a...messy landing on ATAG, was intact though, until I taxied over to the hangars, bounced off something invisible and nosed over.
I spawn on an airfield in France and look for the runway markers - they're not always visible so I just look for a long stretch and a gap in the trees and gun it - at Coquelles (iirc) there is a bloody ditch running through the airfield! I find it almost every time. :damn:
. . . made my first 2 airkills in CloD online last night :o
And fortunately not one of them was me. :D If I'm on tonight (bit tired) I may try the Hurricane - wish me luck!

Will run on a bit later on tonight as I'm working out. But if I catch you online on their server I'll join you. :salute:

OK, I'm nit-picking now, but a blue pencil? :hmmm:
Apart from that, it's another masterpiece. :yeah:

LOL I wondered who would pick that up. It was the only image I could find on Google that fit what I wanted other than one with a paintbrush.

You could make it dark grey, I know you can. :D

Yes but it would still say Dark Cobalt on the pencil and then some f'narkin rivet counter would have me on that as well.:O:
That and I couldn't be arsed changing it.

Fair enough :salute:
Took me a while though, didn't spot it over at AW.
Off to count me rivets. :D
One, two, three, four, damnit - dropped them.

Shiny new monitor...time to try some CloD!

Strange graphic artifacts are strange, probably something to do with the way the ground renders...will have to look into that...

Coming into land after spotting zilch all patrol I see this cheeky little bugger strafing my airfield. Have to fix that!

If that's near Calais I wouldn't worry that much about it, those strange lines appear at my end too. :hmmm:

It was over most of eastern Kent, from Manston down to around Dungeness.
I think it has something to do with the LOD, because it's at the border where the ground textures render in their normal size. :hmmm:

I get these lines as well and it's a known LOD bug.
Returning home from my first ATAG combat sortie. Celebratory fireworks kindly provided by the Royal Airforce.

Hunter and his 109, whilst practicing on a private server.

Back on ATAG I lose Hunter in a dogfight over Dover but pick him up again as he prepares to land, Herr B spots him at the same time but both fail to spot me. Being a gentleman, I let Hunter land, giving him an RAF salute as I fly underneath him and climb up right in front of him.

Herr B latches on to my six, but as he's in a 109 he can't keep up with my turning, fortunately for him my eyesight is useless and he's able to break away before I can come around behind him, and then...well...what's the German for "Stop Spinning!"?
Aww, was about to fly tonight on the server but then I decided to run a complete
Avast! scan on this POS because I accidentally opened Internet Explorer yesterday
and it immediately allowed my PC to be infected. :haha::wah::nope:

Just wondering, I've reloaded Cliffs of Dover and started playing Single Player. How can I remove the Text (server info), from the upper Left-Corner? It covers the Communication Options making it a bit hard to read due to the overlapping.

Press left Alt and right click the window, it'll bring up a variety of options.

It annoyed me until about month ago, now I have it customised to show what I want. I too remove it in SP though.

Not tried the patch yet. . . :hmmm:
To be fair, I usually end up with a shot windscreen and blood all over, the only exceptions are like the shot above where I'm in flames. :stare:

Re: the beta patch, people are talking that turning SSAO on would get rid of the
CTDs. :hmmm:
Shall we (We being Dowly, Hunter, Herr B and myself) go to the beta patch then? I mean, I only fly CLOD online and since ATAG1 which is the fastest and most full server has moved to the beta patch, do you think we should follow?

I'm game if I know where to get it and how to roll back if it doesn't work for me.

@Hunter
D/L links here: http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=31759
You can roll-back to the stable version simply by verifying the files on Steam.
JSGME might work too, but I rather use Steam.
Few things about the patch and the CTDs that I've gathered:
- Clearing CloD's cache before running the game helps for some
- SSAO = on helps for some
Tho, keep in mind that eventho the thread title says it's Beta, it is indeed an
alpha patch, so except it to be wonky in worst case scenario.
