Do I really stand out taht much then Dowly ;)
Gelbe one is in there: she's just had a bit of a spray job and is a bit further down the lineup.
Believe this lineup is:
Valantine - >>
Felix - Gelbe 3
Tarjak - Gelbe 1
Wolf - s>
plus one or two others I can't ID right at the back there although its probably to be one of the following if I am thinking of the right mission:
Rolf - Weisse 3
Mattias - Weisse 8
Otto - >
Although no where near as pretty as Tarjak's screenshots here's a quicky of what Gelbe 1 currently looks like:

Spot on except Rolf isn't in the shot. It's Weisse 8 and Otto.
Gelbe 1 has been in the paint shop and a big thanks to Val for making this skin for me.

Okay, so I reinstalled FSX last week and stuck in a couple of addons. Now I've dug out some others too, and tested them last night.
UKMIL's Grob Tutor, Virtavia's F-111, Wilco's Harrier, and UKMIL's Jaguar.
Why the Tutor has an open canopy and nobody in I don't know!!! :-? The only tweaked one is the F-111 taking off, just to blur the background, the rest are unedited. I'm using REX, and RAF Waddington (Jaguar/F-111) and RAF Wittering (Harrier) are UKMIL/ACG creations.

The Airco D.H.4 is a sweet crate, I got it and the Halberstadt CL.II last week. The D.H.4 is great except in my opinion it turns a bit slower then I would like but I'm far more used to using the Bristol. The Halberstadt on the other hand is like an oversided Albatros and combined with the weapons mods it can be a decent fighter bomber, however it tends to have a habbit of wiggling on take-off, landing, and taxiing.

Wow, it's been a long time since I've been back here and I'm just blown away with the new pics that have been posted.
I liked some of the FSX pics too but they make me sad because after switching from Win7 32bit to Win7 64 Bit, I had to uninstall FSX and since then, I can not re-install it. I keep getting told that it's already on my PC and so won't complete the install and I can't get it to fix what it thinks I have because it's not installed :/\\!!

In the spirit of good will and peace to all men, I decided to fire up Rise of Flight, update it, apply the 'SweetFX' app that people have been talking about (on simhq) and see how my Pup skills are fairing.
First tried with a Dr. I, but the smug sod refused to come down to my level to play, so I told him where to go and stalled into the river.
So, something a little easier and a bit more willing to play was required, cue the old faithful Eindecker:
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/435/49697929.jpg
A bit too much HDR I think, but that's something I can tweak later.
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/4088/30522389.jpg
That, on the other hand, is going to need a bit more than a tweak *wince*
http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/1641/43640702.jpg
One thing the Pup really drums into you is Boelckes third rule, one small Vickers gun and not a great deal of ammo means every shot has to count.
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/1317/90962972.jpg
Ouch, that's gotta hurt...but probably not for long...hopefully...

Number three proved a slightly more nimble opponent, but still went for low level turning battles...

A better ending than his kameraden.
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/4966/88138639.jpg
By the time number four arrived I was down to throwing rocks at him, and then sure enough, in a pass, off came my prop. So it was time to play gliders. Not that bad a landing if I may say so. :yep:
Obviously, the Eindecker is a relatively easy target vs the Pup, but I needed something not too challenging to ease me back into flying the old girl in combat. :yep:

Looks lovely, I think a mate had it a couple of months ago - I remember overspeeding and engine problems, can't remember if I liked it our not but it does look lovely. How much of a hit does it give FPS-wise?
I have frames fixed at 30, and a plane of that type and complexity usually would keep them in midair. But this one not rarely makes them drop to mid-20.
Nothing to worry about, but it makes me wondering what is consuming those frames. While it looks good and is well-simulated, it is no complexity-monster, in my understanding. They wrote in reviews that the frame hit with the earlier piston version was much more severe.
The package has six liveries and three different cockpit colours, beside the bright beige in the pics, there is a black and a grey-blue one.
If there is one issue I have with RealAir planes, than that they just lack fantasy in cockpit lighting. While functionally it is all fine, the ambient light always is of a depressing grey, pale, depression-inducing colour that hinders me to enjoy their planes as much by night as I enjoy them at day. For nightflights, I definitely prefer the Piper Cheyenne. It looks more - gemütlich.
As I have written in the thread on the duke, it overspeeds extremely easily and thus is very easy to burn out the engines. You really have to care for those gauges, you really have to. Oil cooler doors have a vital function in this one.
The overspeeding tendency reminds me of the PMDG JR-4100 - same there. :D
I do not complain, I like it this way.

Another quality addon by RealAir, a Lancair Legacy. Probbaly the niciest and best addon for suchg a small GA aircraft I ever had, with superb visual quality, a joyful flightmodel, and quite some innovative features that are simulated for the first time ever in FSX.

The flight model deserves special recognition, they did some tricks in there that make this one feel really good. Spinning, splipping and all that - old hats for RealAir, I am talking standard flying. Hard to nail it in words, but youj realise it when flying it - this one feels different, more vibrant, dynamic, reactive to the air around, more playful towards the wind. True joy to just draw circles and loopings into the sky with this one. Wonderful! I can see why this addon has scored maximum points and appreciation with reviewers. Nothing negative I can report. Nothing.

REX 2.0.
On my old installation, having GEX and UTX led to instabilities when flying the 737NGX. I am not certain that it was either of these, but after setting up my system all new I left these out, and have a totally stable FSX since then. The evil doer probably was Ultimate Terrain X.
I also did not expect to go back to VFR flying again, and thus textures only making a difference at low altitude seemed to stress ressources for nothing.
Scenery on the pics, although almost invisible, is IcelandX.
Skybird
01-05-13, 04:45 PM
I did a lot of flying over Iceland X the past days. I would not say it is a sensational scenery, but it is one that has its own unspectacular beauty if using it in winter, with all and everything snow- and ice-covered and the ruggedness of the FSX terrain graphics being eased in the eyes that way. Combined the twilight and weather it is some very immersive flying, which makes oyu emotionally react to the desolateness and loneliness of the landscape around, the believable melting of ground and sky at the horizon, and the gentle colours. So, to my surprise I get much more from this scenery than I expected!
Recommendation: make sure to fly in altitudes from 3000-7000 feet, that way you get most from it and also meet plenty of cloud layers to dive into. Warning: some of the fjords and the airfields there are tricky if you get surprised by bad visibility conditions, which with realistic wetaher and season settings I met quite often. Also, almost all NavAids are NDBs exclusively.

Keflavik, with the first lightnings in my neck.
Tomorrow or so it is back to the continent, into Heathrow. the lack of light is killing my mood! Have not dared to approach Heathrow scenery since my complete reionstallation. If I can land the PMDG737NGX there without FSX collapsing, then I know that I have choosen settings and setups wisely and that I have indeed a robust installation again.
Will not have been my last trips at Iceland, that is for sure. With surprisingly little, FSX really does some magic for this scenery, at least in snow-covered winter. Very atmospheric. By looks, it also reminds of the giant Arctica scenery by Aerosoft (which I do not have and do not plan to get).

LOL :)
11th July 1940
151 squadron took off from Gravesend airfield, I flew as Green 3, got into formation and began climbing to Angels 15. At some point over northern Kent Red 2 spotted bandits, Red Leader ordered a defensive split high and we ran straight into a flight of 109s. A chaotic furball ensued, I lost Green Leader, caught up to him again over Margate just in time to lose him on the R/T, redirected to Red Leader, only to have him go off the channel as well.
Found some 109s escorting a returning bomber formation, the 109s seemed rather docile, so put some lead into one, he broke away for France, I followed and pecked at him but he refused to go down. Gave up the chase when the cliffs of France showed up in my windscreen and RTB'd to Hawkinge to find I was the only pilot to bring their Hurri back. 8 pilots of the squadron lost, including the CO, and 11 Hurricanes destroyed.
151 Squadron was redeployed to 13 Group that afternoon to rebuild.
What a massacre. :dead:

Landed back at Hawkinge which appears to have been the victim of some Stukas...
15th July 1940
Transferred out of 151 squadron back down into the fray at West Malling with 43 Squadron. Still flying Hurris though. Promoted to Green Leader.
Took off at approx 8am, heading to protect Convoy ABLE off the coast of Hastings, spotted some distant contacts, called them to Red Leader but he couldn't see them, turned to get a clearer view but Red Leader called me back into the formation. Just as I was rejoining a furball erupted to our three o clock, called it out to Red Leader and he must have had his glasses on as he spotted it too.
Dove into the fray, found 110s! Not sure what was going on but don't recall seeing any of their rear gunners firing, bagged one and I'm sure I got another but someone else must have claimed it.
Lost the squadron in the process but dialed up Red Leader who seemed to be intent on pursuing the Luftwaffe back to France, was lead on a merry dance around the Channel trying to rendezvous when he decided to RTB. So RTB'd myself as the rest of the squadron started reporting low fuel, landed safely. We lost four men, but claimed 24 110s and 29 Stukas (split between four squadrons that were in the furball).

Angels at OH 5 ....am engaging
:salute: Tally Ho!
16th July 1940
Spent day at 5mins readiness, no convoys through the eastern Channel so Jerry took the day off, sending only a token raid at the Western approaches.
Some new Hurricanes arrived to replace our losses from yesterday.
17th July 1940
Another quiet day, some scuffles off the Anglian coast but nothing in our area.
18th July 1940
Another dull day, weather dull too.
19th July 1940
7:30am take off to patrol convoy COWBOY off Beachy Head. Fairly uneventful flight, few quirks to work out with the Prop pitch on this Hurri, kept changing even when I wasn't touching it (stupid thing went back onto AUTO) made it very hard to keep formation. Landed back at West Malling about 11am-ish.
Thought Jerry had taken the day off but a big do was picked up on radar at just after 18:00, we scrambled at 18:22 and met a load of 110s and Stukas over the Thames Estuary gunning for convoy CRUSTY. I got one, then met up with Red 2, having lost contact with the CO, to find another flight of 110s. Tackled one but clipped him during close maneuvers and lost starboard wing, bailed out over Canterbury way and got a taxi back to West Malling. We lost six aircraft and five pilots, including the Skipper, but claimed 18 109s, 21 110s, and 19 Stukas split between four squadrons which intercepted. My personal claims now stand at three 110s.

I had transfered from Esc N.3 to Esc N.26 to get a chance to fly the SPAD 7, not much of a transfer to be honest considering that Esc N.26 was based at the same aerodrome as Esc N.3 so it was more like taking my bags from one tent to another on the other side of the field.

Well I'm starting to get back into Rise of Flight again, and I've learned a couple of new things. 1. The SPAD VII is a great boom-and-zoom fighter, but it is horrible in a turn fight and will do the "SPAD Spin" ie a flat spin that you can't recover from. 2. The Airco D.H.2 is a very worthy foe for the Albtross D.II.
The SPAD VII wins the day again.

20th July 1940
Heavy raids against coastal airfields and Dover docks. Tangmere, Manston and Hawkinge all hit hard.
21st July 1940
More raids against coastal airfields, and one deep raid against Kenley airfield. Convoy 'RABBIT' heading out from the Thames targeted.
Scrambled against a raid heading over Hawkinge, spotted a group of contacts at altitude passing over us, Red leader declined to intercept, however given the altitude difference that was hardly surprising. Expected Red leader to turn and climb, but instead we continued to France....
Spotted more bandits over their airfield in France, the squadron split to engage and then I was hit by flak and forced to bale.
Captured by Wehrmacht forces on the ground, and interred in a POW camp until liberated in 1944 by US forces breaking out from Normandy.

Author note: I do really rather hate it when the squadron takes a jaunt to France, such things were strictly forbidden in the real Battle, and I swear I turned off the RAF modifier which makes them follow raids back to the French coast...however in this case the waypoint of the mission itself was somewhere near Wissant.:/\\!!

Bird strike?
I have absolutely no idea. Was wondering the cause myself. I do have birds at around 120% or so but I don't know if that's a lot or not. I have the takeoff on video but that doesn't really tell much. Only indication on what happened was that the L-HYD PRESS, L-ENG OIL(?) PRESS and L-GEN lights were flickering in the caution light panel. Though I suppose those will flicker every time engine is on fire and doesn't really explain anything.
Arclight
05-20-13, 09:42 AM
Another cause could be the random failures, provided you have those enabled. Low fluid pressure and no power from generator basically just indicates RPM was too low to sustain those.
Did the engine fail to light first time? Fuel can accumulate on failed starts. If you don't crank the engine afterwards to get rid of the excess fuel it can cause some havoc when it does light.
Actually I first landed on that airfield and then took off so there can't be any problems due to failed start up procedure. And yes, random failures are on which might be the case here.

Lost part of tailplane to enemy action (that I never saw, only felt the effects!), still didn't deter my low level VFR through a valley, saw another aircraft and chased it down (for the fun of it), did my usual eject the canopy - then it started raining! And finally to prove how dumbed down FC3 is compared to other DCS titles - I landed, safely, no ballooning back into the air, no tyre-burst, no Arc already on the runway, no enemy airfield, just landed. I've probably done a dozen landings so far (about half of them with no damage - go me!) but they've all had forward speed. As soon as I decend vertically and apply a slight bit of collective to reduce that speed it goes all - BEEEEEP, BEEEEEP, BEEEEEP - on me.
Back to the tutorials.

Aye, hover without a fancy auto-pilot like in the Ka-50 is challenging, to say the least.
I tend to kill the speed before touching down, but it's really that end of the approach that things become really wobbly and twitchy.

You have to decrease your speed SLOWLY. Don't try to get abruptly to a standstill in mid air or your chopper will drop like a stone. While you are decreasing your speed you have to constantly check your vertical speed indicator. Once you get in to the "shaker zone" you must be ready to correct your dive speed with the collective (was it the collective? The lever that adjusts your rotor pitch...). You have to react even to the slightest increase in drop speed or it will be too late.
Usually helicopter landings are not like in the movies where they approach a landing zone at full speed, decelerate hard and set down within 5 seconds. It's more like the final approach of an aircraft where you steadily fly towards your target, constantly bleeding speed and altitude. It can take several minutes from seeing your landing zone till touching down.
Herr-Berbunch
09-13-13, 04:28 AM
I know that, Schroeder, it still doesn't mean I do it right. :D
In response to Dowly's post below - yes, it is a PITA to fly - constant trim resets required and something soft to land on. I'm currently venturing into the village/town to the NW - only crashed once and never hit a building :woot:

Definitely. That also saves the groundcrew from having to tow it in to the hangar to repair it, well done you. :yeah:
Btw, a good way to land, if you are in a situation where you need to go down
(safely) asap is to make a hard right-hand turn and put the nose up slightly.
That does two things: 1) it kills your speed quickly and 2) as your
speed drops to the area when the shaking starts, the right-hand turn eliminates
the need for left rudder.
Also, play with the collective right and you can drop quite a bit of altitude too. :yep:
If done correctly, you should be almost hovering stationary.
Tchocky
09-13-13, 12:02 PM
Important to pile on collective before VRS kicks in. I've not managed a proper hover yet, but landings are...getting there.
I have most fun zipping between the buildings at fifty feet.
Here's a cockpit view /w input indicator of me doing the turn and landing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOpW6SrxWm0
NOTE: That was just after take off, so my speed wasn't very high. But you just
need to bleed some out on your way to the turn point if you have high speed.
Don't do the slow, shallow bleed, but once or twice a steeper pitch up.
Imagine if you'd be under fire, you don't want to be a slow*, easy target.
This maneuver applies quite universally, you can practice this even in the Armed Assault
series (done it in ArmA 2 and 3 (Little Bird)) and in DCS: Black Shark.
The aim stays the same no matter the game/sim: 1) bleed airspeed and
2) get to almost stationary hover. In other helos, you can make a left-hand
turn if you want of course.
Hope it helps!
:salute:
EDIT: * I mean't to say predictable. I remember seeing a Vietnam War documentary years ago,
talking of how the VC and NVA took out US helos. They had charts that would show where to
aim if a US helo was doing a shallow landing, it was pretty accurate by the looks of it and they
had these attached to trees around their lines, so they could check them quickly.

1. Really low level from Sochi-Adler to the viaduct just up the coast at Kudepsta. Once there I tried to coerce my wingmen to follow me through the arches but they were all chicken. In fact two were still playing catch-up, so . . .
2. & 3. I went to go head to head with them, the first one I cut quite fine - it's all practice, the second . . .
4. I really thought I missed him by quite a margin, even though I was turning toward him. It's all his fault for killing all his speed. First I knew was just a big bang.
5. Then I realised I couldn't see my rotors.

Hopefully that EDGE thing offers some improvement in performance. Not being a decade old engine and all.
It runs slightly better now than it did back on the old 8800 and a dual-core, but I can't say I've seen it improve from the old quad to the current i5, or from the GTX460 to a 660. While the framerates are alright most of the time, it can choke on hard manoeuvres (lots of physicsy stuff I guess) and dense missions. New engine seems long overdue.

That said if I'm in an intensive situation I don't have much time to glace at my fps.

Oooh, might need to do some Hawg flying this week/weekend...
P-3 Search
I decided to go on a real-time simulated flight to hunt for MH370 in the current search area, on a USN P-3C (wanted to fly as RAAF, but unfortunately wasn't able to find a repaint for this lovely aircraft). Here are the results!
http://i.imgur.com/0S5u2zb.jpg
We begin our journey from RAAF Pearce Base, near Perth, where the search efforts are focused. Boarding the aircraft shortly before 9am (local time).
http://i.imgur.com/poNenV1.jpg
Ready to start. We won't be the first aircraft on station today, and expect to arrive on station at around 1pm.

Powering up the engines.

Taxiing out from the ramp.

Takeoff!

Climbing into the sky with a full load of fuel - aircraft is a little heavy.

Leaving Perth behind...

...and heading into the open ocean
http://i.imgur.com/eH4zSYP.jpg
A 4-hour trip to our distant search quadrant awaits us.
The media seem to often refer to the location as being "near the Australian coast". Here is how "near" it actually is:

http://i.imgur.com/aBFO2tI.jpg
Arriving in the search area, we find that it's a bit cloudy down below
http://i.imgur.com/uIVyfI1.jpg
Descending into snow/rain squalls to get below the clouds and begin our search.
Normally, the P-3 shuts down one or two engines while searching (to save fuel and improve loiter time); unfortunately feathering a prop in FS doesn't stop it from spinning (at least graphically - the physics effect seems to be correct), but as you can see from the instruments, I've done just that while preparing for our search.
http://i.imgur.com/fo4IjWV.jpg
For the first part of the search, conditions are not very good. There are squalls in the area and we drop down to 1500ft to get a better view.
http://i.imgur.com/xsbz1vK.jpg
However, soon afterwards, the squalls clear up...
http://i.imgur.com/U1YG8Ua.jpg
And we get our first sighting!
http://i.imgur.com/kcVSuGE.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/raun7mU.jpg
It's the Norwegian freighter (car carrier) MV Saint Petersburg, the first ship to arrive in the search area.
http://i.imgur.com/GL8nJBh.jpg
Compare to the real picture:
http://i.imgur.com/1CSUTbe.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/tdRQsdY.jpg
With the visibility improved, we climb up to 5000ft and continue our search.
http://i.imgur.com/ywehfub.jpg
However, no other sightings besides the St. Petersburg are made - just miles of endless ocean, far away from any land.
http://i.imgur.com/tlgbmPg.jpg
After almost 3 hours in the search area, we start getting low on fuel, so I get all our engines back online, climb over the clouds, and head back to Perth at almost 30000ft.
http://i.imgur.com/d25niTS.jpg
Soon, the sun begins setting already.
http://i.imgur.com/jQlPHcF.jpg
Sunset over a very remote part of the ocean.
http://i.imgur.com/x4TdwtH.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/Pfnxpxf.jpg
We make our way back towards Perth in the dark.
http://i.imgur.com/KBHcN8L.jpg
Lined up on final to Pearce, more than 11 hours after we took off from the same runway.
http://i.imgur.com/5eJYGKz.jpg
Taxiing back to the ramp...
http://i.imgur.com/mrHmzF1.jpg
And that completes our flight for today. The real crew would be ready to fly againt he next morning.
Hope you enjoyed it!

Nice flight! I'm sure that was fun to sit through. :)
Haha, who said I was sitting? :P (I work from a stand-up desk these days). It didn't stop me from cooking a couple of meals, going out to the store, and taking a nap, lol

I would love to see the reaction of air passengers if the pilot said that over the intercom.
I would almost pay to see that.

To be fair, the standard P-3 crew has 3 pilots on board, just 1 of whom can perfectly well fly the aircraft on his own if needed. And for airline flights of more than 8-10 hours, there's always a relief crew - and again, only one pilot needed at the controls for the cruise stages of flight.
Now, the guys I don't envy are some of the bomber pilots. B-2s routinely fly 20+ hour missions with only two crew, no relief pilots, just taking turns at power naps - that's stamina!

I know somebody who is related to one of them.
Sounds really really fun to be honest. Leave in the really early morning, fly to the middle east, blow crap up, come home for dinner. :D
EDIT: Man get on Skype sometime! I've got fast enough internet to talk!
I'll try and get back :D Like I said, just been really busy...

Ah...the B-1!
I love flying the B-1 on "missions" in FS2004. It's quite fun.
Yeah, great plane no matter how you look at it. And still counts as the loudest plane that I've had the pleasure of hearing :D

Yep, makes for a fantastic alarm call at 0615 every morning as they set off to bomb the crap out of Tora Bora.
Honestly, 0615-0625, without fail. If OBL was there then he'd know exactly when to duck, and live another day.

Hard to believe it's been around for 16 years already, and is still being worked on and improved - and is still unmatched at many of the things it does.
