I'd recommend reading the tactical lessons in the Falcon manual, they are some of the best for any flight sim ever. After that, I'd recommend flying some missions where you just use one weapon only, such as a Wild Weasel strike with anti-radar missiles and no possibility of having to engage aircraft, for example. That way you can learn one weapon well; you can use the campaign to set up such a mission and give yourself an escort to keep the MiGs off you. After you have that weapon sussed, do the same with another weapon etc, etc. If you adopt that approach, you'll find it is easier to take everything in and learn all the different launch and radar modes without getting overloaded with learning curves.

Ah, thanks for the advice mate:up:
I kinda like the challenge,
yesterday evening after posting the screenshot I just started a dogfight against a rookie AI in a MiG29.
lost :dead: 4 - 11 (the humiliation:oops: )
ah well I will give it time..one step at the time ;)
any chance there are Subsimmers playing Falcon4.0 AF online?

Stealth Hunter....are you playing with limited ammo?:p
I play Falcon online occasionally with a buddy, haven't done that for a while though, but will no doubt get back into it at some point.
Re the dogfight practice missions: You might already have read all this, but in case you haven't... The trick with dogfights in the F-16 (like every other plane) is to learn the best corner speed for it, so that you can turn tightest and not run out of fuel by resorting to using too much (or any) afterburner power to compensate for lost lift. The lesson text in the Falcon manual explains it all, but the essence of it is that the F-16 turns best at between 330 and 440 knots whilst pulling about 5G (at higher G, it will bleed off speed too much and you will stall), so the trick is to learn to maintain the ideal turn settings by: watching the G meter on the HUD, keeping the speed as close to 400 IAS as possible, and looking up along the lift vector line on the canopy to keep it on the bad guy as much as possible.
Learning to do all that without resorting to using the afterburner to power yourself out of trouble is the real skill of this, and to achieve that, you have to occasionally back off on the stick pressure and reduce the Gs, to prevent energy from bleeding away, and occasionally put the lift vector downwards, by roling inverted to pick up speed in a sort of miniature 'low yo-yo' move. All of which means you end up continuously easing the stick forward, and then back again to up the Gs again, until the speed bleeds, when you back off again, also occasionally rolling inverted, to pick up speed. Then you 'rinse and repeat' until the bad guy is in your sights. Note that although your missiles can pull far more G than you can, a missile pulling 15G at mach 2 makes for a very wide turning circle, so you need plenty of lead on the target in order to give any missile a decent chance at hitting a target in a turning fight, i.e. the bad guy would have to be disappearing under your dashboard to be in with a chance of hitting him with a missile, so the best time to fire, is if he is reversing his turn or disappearing under the nose when you have a good tone, as it will be well within the seeker cone and also within the missile's flight envelope. With the gun, the lift vector line on your canopy is a good guide for firing.
This is what many Harrier pilots in the Falklands were taught to do by their commander - 'Sharkey' Ward - he had perfected the technique of maintaining a turn without 'burners when flying the Phantom for the RN Fleet Air Arm, and as a result, often defeated much better aircraft in training against other NATO squadrons, and at one point was so far ahead in dissimilar combat training victories against other squadrons in NATO, that it became a source of embarrassment for them. Often his victories came about without even having to 'fire', simply because the other aircraft had to break off, having run out of fuel as a result of using too much 'burner to turn, rather than utilising this skill. It's also one of the main techniques they teach at the 'Top Gun' Navy Fighter school. The technique is detailed quite a lot in his recent book: 'Sea Harrier Over the Falklands', which is well worth a read if you want plenty of good tips on flying jets, it's an entertaining book too, and makes some quite politically-charged accusations as well, which are also quite enlightening, notably, he is scathing about the RAF's poor showing in the Falklands War.
:D Chock
Chock, you can read chapter and verse on Sharkey here:
http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=289183&highlight=Sharkey+Ward
One of my colleagues was an RAF Harrier pilot down south during the war.He gets quite a few mentions in this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/RAF-Harrier-Ground-Attack-Falklands/dp/184415551X/ref=sr_1_1/203-7896671-0782335?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194452355&sr=8-1
Yup Linton, I've seen many comments that Ward was a bit of a Bulsh*tter, and he clearly rubbed a lot of people up the wrong way too (not unlike Douglas Bader in that respect, i.e. a very vocal and visible face of a conflict, and therefore one that attracts praise and derision too in large quantities).
I tend to balance the detractor's views with his and it seems to give a reasonable point of view if you come to your own conclusion somewhere between the two. I'd never take one person's view of such matters as Gospel, but there is no denying Ward's achievements (among others) who were in the Falklands, and regardless of this, his book does explain dogfighting well in layman's terms, which was the main reason for a recommendation here. For another Fleet Air Arm Harrier memoir to balance things out - which is also a good read - No Escape Zone by Lt Cmdr Nick Richardson is worth a look, This has quite a bit of detail in it about attempts to spoof the MiG-29's doppler radar with vertical moves, in the hope to reduce doppler shift and blind the radar. Didn't stop him getting shot down over Gorazde in Bosnia which, along with his escape and evasion is mostly what the book covers. Definitely worth a look too.

First though to record the making of that, to help ppl to do composites, but as that was my first try on mutilating the plane, the video would've been 3hrs long.
Anyways, few shots from a game we finished just few mins ago. Players were Miki, Kepe & me, just messing around.
The game was full of hilarious moments, 90% of them came from close-calls or nice crashes/crappy landings. So, here's the best of them.

This is my plane after a not so sucessful landing at a German airfield near Stalingrad after intercepting some figters the Russians sent up. I shot down four planes, but one of the planes blew up to close to me and damaged my 109. So I lowered the gear only to have one ripped off. I tryed to land belly up only to go overshoot the runway:doh: and didn't know that the ground some 50 or so infront of the runway and wound up in the bottom of a valley. I'm gald that it was behind my own lines.

From my BoB II campaign. 120 JU88 & HE111 flying towards London. What this shot doesnt show is the 216 Messerschmitt 109s that are flying high above the formation as escorts! And as if this 336 plane formation wasnt enough, a bit to the west was another 300 bomber/fighter formation heading towards London.

With that many aircraft in the air, does your game not stutter and fart? coz mine did when i played a campaign with loads and loads of hurricanes in the air.
Nope. Did you have your particle effects set to high? Or was it effect density, something like that. Anyways, that should be set to medium, as the high setting is poorly optimised and gives you the stuttering. There's little difference between the two settings so it wont take away from the quality.
Ah!! cheers matey i'l look at that
Tho, if you get stuttering and there's no fighting or fires or anything, then of course the particle setting wont help. ;)

Been playing BoBII for a while now, must say I rather enjoy it. Those jerries just come in greater and greater numbers (September 11th was a busy day, just as it should be historically).
But I got a question...where does the pics shows up after you press PrintScreen? I can't find them in the game folders. Same goes for IL-2 btw.
If your using that option....you press printscreen minimise game open paint and press control + V and it opens, then save it somewhere.A bit tedious if you ask me, use fraps or some other capture proggie.
IL2 pics show up in the main directory usually, BOBII files are in a folder named STILLS ;)
And Dowly, ya naughty ferret, I like the look of it. About time the terrain got a look at. :D If that's what you're doing, of course. ;)

That is an il-2 screen shot.
The ships definitly could use a reskin on IL2. The textures are very low resolution. I did start to reskin the M-Boat, but never finished it.

The candidate wins 100 points. You are right. The photoreal scenery is "Alpi2". Practically all Alpes are covered by 3 additional sceneries for Condor, one of these, covering the middle and southern Italian part, is photorealistic scenery. the video "Condor Challenge" that I linked i n my "review" of it uses the same scenery.
some of the additional sceneries do very good jobs with the default graphics as well.

After we shot down all the enemy planes, we head back to base. Princess landed first and she took the position of ground control. Meanwhile, in the air, Morts & Richter had abit of a differencies on who goes first.
http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee274/Finnish_Ferret/s9.jpg
Out of 11 planes, 4 landed succesfully. However, the rest 7 did survive, so it was a good sortie.

And he also got kinda lost during the mission (no idea how that is possible :rotfl:).
Oh and morts, dont fly so fecking close to everybody! I watched the track today and on the circling around the AF part you were at times 3 meters from Val's tail. No need for that, nobody cares how close to a plane you can fly.
And one more thing, crash your plane one more time on purpose in dogfight without a reason. Do that in a dogfight when Val or Richter is around and you will more than likely get a boot from the JG53. It's irritating and it's unfair. Same goes for the nav lights in dogfight, dont abuse them. I watched that track too and when you were diving on me, you turned the lights off to signal you are in combat, the moment you overshot my plane and I was in position to shoot, you turned them on again. If you cant play fair, dont play at all.
Rant over. Thanks.

O/T: By the way, just finished reading two FANTASTIC books about the BoB. One is called First Light which is a spitfire pilots recollection of his journey through IOT/flying training to shooting down 109's over the drink. The other is called Fighter Boys which is basically about the formation of the RAF from the RFC and the pilots who were in it, both good books highly recommend.

What mission/campaign is that from?
I prefer scripted as they load faster and can be more interesting but I'm looking for something that'll hold my interest.
Pacific theatre is getting my attention at the mo.
Well, after the Slot map is released a few of the very best known static campaign authors have promised to start work immediately on static campaigns for the Slot from August, 1942, clear through 1944. By the time people are playing those, the New Britain/New Ireland/Bouganville map will be done (Buna in SW corner), so they can start on that. Then a proper NG make with Lae, Wewak, etc for the strafers :D
Gotta take the "red pill" though ;)

You guys up for a flight tonight? Do you guys use teamspeak/hyperlobby? Or is it a direct connection to a server though Il-2?

Yes, I think we are going to fly. Starting at 20-21GMT, I hop into TS at 20-ish GMT.
We use the direct connect to IP method, IP will be given in TS.

EDIT: Jim's TS seems to be offline atm. If it's not back online later, I host my TS server and give the IP here.
Bugger I'll be at work then...:hmm: Gotta get me a better timezone. Or encourage more Aussies to play IL2.:damn:

Cool, I'll be there. What kind of flying you planning? I've NEVER used heavy bombers before, purely fighters so far.

I'm hosting a coop campaign, dont know which one, will see when we are all there to get your opinions. You can usually pick fighter or bomber, so no worries if you cant fly the bombers. ;)
@Jimbuna: Okie dokie! :up:

Cool that sounds like a blast, I'll probably go fighters as its what I'm used to. Any thoughts on what campaign your going to be using? I'll look for some more skins to DL if you let me know in advance, make things look a bit prettier. Btw what's the key for taking a screenshot in Il-2?
P.S Any mods you guys use that I should install? I've only got skins installed as extra's atm.

No idea. We tried Coral Sea last night and it was nice, maybe we continue that. Dont know, we'll see when the time comes.

Not sure if there is a key, I can press PrtScr and it SOMETIMES puts a screenshot to the IL2 folder. Just use FRAPS or other program like it.

Nope, no mods. And I suggest not using any for the DCG campaign I host, as it messes up the plane selection screen for you to be able to choose planes the rest of us cant fly.
