Gods, bloody Jerries chased me all the way home after I shot up half a dozen bombers.
Man those J8As sure are tough though, took a cannon shell right to the engine and she still flew on!

More like Goering's patience. Out of 14 sorties, I think I've safely landed back to base 3-4 times. Other times I've either bailed or crashlanded. Hate those veteran sniper AI gunners. :damn:

WTH? No vertical stabilizers... that aircraft would fall right out of the sky. FM is a bit porked for it to still be flyable after loosing those control surfaces.
http://www.daveswarbirds.com/b-17/photos/tail/tail1.gif
"Hang the Expense Again III" was seen heavily damaged, going down over France. The pilot, however, was able to bring it out of a dive and struggled back to his home field. The blast damage blew the tail gunner out of the aircraft but he survived the incident.
Them planes can do miraculous things. ;)

I lost one stabiliser over the target due to flak, as well as gaining several large holes in my wings. On the way back we were attacked by fighters, my gunners took care of one of them, however I lost the other stabliser in the fight. It yawed heavily to port until I put engine 1 to 40% and engine 2 to 90% and toggled them both to keep it balanced, loosing altitude as I went. I landed on the grass facing approx 90degrees to the runway and as I used the wheel brakes I spun.
I woudl have to agree with you about it falling out of the sky, I think the only thing that stopped it was I was pretty damn well trimmed after loosing the first pieceas well as spending so much time on engine management.
V
Dang, you sure are lucky when you get your wings shot up. It's always both wings! :rotfl: Care to share some of that luck? I always get only one wing holed. :shifty:

Or worse, you can find yourself unable to see a damn thing whilst an enemy fighter slips up on your ass and opens up with his cannons and main guns on you. Had that happen more than once. One twit had the audacity to hit my fuel tank and he nearly cooked me. However, I managed to go into a steep enough dive to extinguish the flames, only suffering moderate wounds.
@IABL
Yeh, I've had that happen a few times. :p
@SH
I get that on pretty much every sortie, hard to see back from the 109G2's cockpit. :yep: Tho, the most recent sorties have been races to get kills. I think the RAF is running out of planes as we now have 4 or so RAF planes up against our 16 plane bomber formations with 8 escorting fighters. :p

Oh yeh, like on the.. I think 3rd sortie we had last night. I spotted a formation of 4 A20s below me, rolled on my back and attacked. I was so concentrated to the 4 that I didnt notice them climbing back to regroup with the rest of the 12 A20s... needless to say I got oil all over my windshield, but kept going for awhile keeping behind one of the bombers hammering it with everything I had. Then another hit to the engine made my 109 smoke thick black smoke so broke off and while I was descending lower to make a crashland, I saw tracers going past my cockpit. Looked back and one VERY pissed off A20 was chasing me. :rotfl:

No, no mission that I noticed of. And FSX doesnt model shooting guns. But I have to take back everything bad I've said about MFS series' flight model. It's brilliant! The 109 is a real joy to fly, bank to one wing and when turning the joystick to the other side, it feel lighter (or vice verca, cant remember). Go into a dive, pick up loads of speed and start to pull the stick, it's HEAVY! And not like in IL2 or the other sims, it's not just how the planes feel heavy on your screen, with a FF joystick, you really have to pull the stick.
PS. Oleg, any chance to get those things for BoB:SoW? Pleeeeease! :)

Wow, is there a trick to get that kind of damage? I've lost parts but most of the time my plane looks great excepts that it smokes from damage to the engine area but I do not recall the last time I ever saw a scratch or a hole in my aircraft despite the poor performance after getting to close to flak.
As for the Canopy, I've had my fare share of holes in it when looking out.:yep:

Bigglesworth had some close calls during his current career.
A flight accident almost cost him his life, when he happened to clip his left wing at a pole during take off. Had to stay in hospital for 19 days.
The Jerries are becoming a real pain in the arse, twice they've jumped us with formations 10+ against our squads of 3-4. Overwhelming odds has caused heavy losses for RFC-54 in the early months of 1917. Another Fokker Scourge is afoot, I think.
Those dirty Fokkers just keep on coming don't they? Ground fire got Sulley a few months ago after 11 missions.

Erich Loewenhardt of Jasta 10 goes down at the hands of Major James Bigglesworth. This kill rises Bigglesworths claims to 61. (35 confirmed) May 1917.
http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/8991/shell2008060915211351nb6.jpg
For real, Erich Loewenhardt became the third best pilot in the german airforce during WWI. He died on the 10th of August, 1918, when he crashed into a Fokker D.VII during a dogfight. He bailed out, but his parachute didn't open, so he fell to his death from around 12.000 feet. The poor boy...he was only 21...The pilot in the Fokker survived though.

:D Hehe, yeah in that 2nd sortie I rammed the BF110 after a miscalculated turn, I try to swing behind the fecka to avoid beeing shot up by the Rear Gunner.
anyhow your IL2 graphic quality isnt right, no AA nor AF as far I can see?
try to enable those in your Ati Control panel, mate
it really helps you to spot planes from futher away and ofcourse to avoid that they are too pixelated when they at medium range which makes them hard to track if the landscape is of dark colour.
yes Dowly, its mostly Spitfire IXC versus 109 G2's
sometimes the P40 jumps in on the allied side.
its a great campaign actually, short distance to target, even on 50 + aircraft there is plenty of action going on.
Kratos and I are becoming some crazy RAF pilots,
and for the first time kratos scored a kill and lived to tell that story (a Fat Ju52 which we started to call ''Fat Goering Carrier'')

Well i recorded the first two trks. of the three tonight, unfortunately they make no sense whatsoever:-? I think dcg has crocked it up big style, planes flying backwards, sideways, shooting into thin air, the 109 i bagged in the first sortie, ''I was looking forward to seeing the playback on that one.'' according to the playback i was shooting at nothing, but the fecka still went down smokin' :hmm: Did anyone else record tonight? I just flew a couple of the dcg campaigns we've been doing (just for testing purposes) to try and figure out this ntrk prob. Done the more than 25 aircraft and the more than 50 aircraft. and i had no probs with the ntrk's. IE: playback and frapping. Run them through vdub..''potential to make a nice movie'' ;) Sooo my assumptions are ''DCG has difficulty with the online sorties'',seems to be a lot of lagging going on ''yea a know the clouds play a major factor'' but there was lots of cloud formation when i played campaigns. Would the number of players on the server play a part? Not that there is ever a lot of players on the server, Wouldn't mind getting to the bottom of this one, because we've had some good sorties the last few nights.

so can you add effects and stuff. I looked at the website and it said it doesn't do so much as adobe but I'll give it a try.
It def. doesn't even come close with adobe,I use it for editing frapped ntrk's and compression, I even get my screencaps from vdub using the ntrk. It lets you compress the huge fraps file to about a tenth the size.

Ta, mate. Was at our summerhouse all weekend, ******* waste of time it was hardly can remember anything. :shifty:
As for the tracks, like I said it's usually the online games that fock it up because IL2 have to move data between the players and if there's even a slightest hiccup in the connection the track is becomes corrupt.

Okie, no worries, dont need it anymore. ;) Was thinking of replacing the black smoketrail texture with a better looking one, but I figured out how to make me a nice thick black smoke when plane is badly hit. Tho, dont know how big FPS hit there is if multiple planes are smoking, the stock black smoke has a limit of IIRC 256 particles, I made it 2048. :rotfl:

Come ooon, 3 Stukas is a nice catch. Tho, you gotta learn to be more patient! Judging from the pic, you opened fire from 400-600 meters? Damnit, Krat! Havent you ever heard the quote from Erich Hartmann (or was it Galland? Aaaanyways!) 'When you think you are too close, get closer' or something like that. Especially when flying with limited ammo, shooting from afar is a waste of ammunitions. I have my converge set to 120m for both MGs & cannons, I usually open fire from 150-250m, depending of the target.
A good way to practise the distances is to set up a quick mission with an friendly plane of your choice and turning the icons on.

Dunno about IL2, but with BOB the best way to go for Stukas is to get beneath and behind them. I've got a couple of them like that, but never three at a time, always run out of ammo after the first one :P

Aye, that's the tactic I use if below them when the fight starts. Other wise I just boom&zoom at them.

I know Over Flanders Field is due out soon, so I'm curious about any others. Possibly, later this year? I hope. :hmm:

KOTS does look very good. Some think it will be better then Over Flanders Field. I just hope it has as good, if not better Character development and Awards. Something other then the same 5 Medals.
Graphically, I think that both look just as great.
I'll see what I can find on BOB. I have not been to impressed with the few that have come out since MicroProse was closed. They were the best:up:

Gotta agree on that one. European Air War is still one of my all time favorite combat flight sims, just too bad it doesnt work with the newer GFX drivers. :nope:
Have you ever tried Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory? In a way it reminded me of EAW with it's huge bomber formations and the overall 'feeling of being there'.

Yep, we fly versus AI,
the Nav lights we turn on to identify eachother when we are all friendly, it actually started when I accidently missidentified 2 aircraft, I thought the chaser was Enemy but when I zoomed the aircraft I heard cursing at the other end, it was Xabbarus:oops:
since then we are using navs to at least prevent shooting mates :p

Nope, I Host the IL2 games using the DCG Campaigns, great fun. and you're welcome to join one day if you want.

Depends, I host campaigns that have aircraft slots open for both sides.
so you can fly Allies or the German Luftwaffe.
for example I mostly pick the RAF while Dowly picks the Luftwaffe.
so there is a chance I meet him in combat.
I will keep in mind if you're up for a flight that I raise the Dificulty a bit with Locked cockpit on and Icons on Map off (I will leave flightpath on so you at least have a clue where you need to go)
we always meet at teamspeak if a flight is about to start, I mostly hop on about 22.00GMT +1

Aye, I enjoyed it alot. Eventho, the first sortie was uneventful for us germans, it was nice to watch the groundbattle up from the 5k I was flying at. Oh, btw, I think we crossed paths quite a few times. At first, we 190s escorted the 88s to the town in Q14 and back, after that we turned back to the town and I circled it 5-6 times. Seeing how you russians sneaked up on us, you had to be close the whole time. Great sortie.

The monthly fee and the sheer hugeness of the war cuts down alot of teen/fraghunter players. The sorties feel great to fly as you know there's no AI in the world, every single soldier/tank/aircraft/AAgun/ATgun/ship/etc. you see on your sortie is another human player. It really adds to the immersion to know that the fight below you in a strategically important city is fought human player vs. human player and it is up to you and your squadron to keep the airspace clear of enemy fighters and bombers. The flightmodel is very much different of IL2, but it isnt a bad thing, it isnt very forgiving either.
You can play it for 14 days free, I'd suggest to try it at first.

WWIIOL is that fun? Or is it full of flyboys who like to shoot everything and no team work?
I'll step in and answer that. WWIIOL is brilliant. Teamwork is a must or you won't get very far. The best part is that the game has Land, air and sea.
Here are a couple of screenies:
Me providing air cover for some Kriegsmarine convoy. They set up offshore and shelled a town while the German Army attacked it.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/ernstjuenger321/Fairmile-convoy.png
Me taking part in a huge Stuka raid. The German attack ont e town was faltering, then our Stuka raid came and took out many allied tanks.

Gotta love the Stuka...
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/ernstjuenger321/biggie2.gif
and last but not least, here is a youtube video that shows a bit of the airwar.
Some things to note:
-the graphics of the terrain have been updated a bit
-this shows part of the strategic airwar (flying deep behind enemy lines and bombing factories
-notice the teamspeak comms the guys use...lots of teamwork. The Axis will have interceptors working together as well.

And there are tons of other great WWIIOL videos on Youtube. I always post the videos to people wanting info. They do a better job than I would showing how great the game is.
True that, but what the videos dont show is how messed up the balance between the allies & axis airforce is. That's just ridiculous, Brits have 2 variants of Hurricanes they can fly at lvl1, the french have the Hawk, but what the Jerries have? A farcking 110!? Now try to reach the total of 400 points to get to rank 3 and 109, when, if you somehow accidentally manage to shoot EA down, you will most likely be shotdown before you reach the base. BANG, 3 points.
Why not have 109 as lvl1 plane, and 110(with bombs) & 190 as lvl3.
Tho, the teamwork is better on the axis side. Just 15min or so ago, I was playing as infantry, defending the coalstal town of Wilhemdam or something like that. The RAF & FaF were constantly keeping our noses on the mud with their strafin runs as the enemy tanks, infantry and ships slowly encircled us. Despite the big bombing raids from RAF, we managed to hold on and then the LW reorganised and launched a formation of 20-25 109s & 110s all flying in a one huge formation, 3-4k high and all hell broke loose when they jumped down onto the RAF & FAF. :)
