I have SH3+GWX3+SHCommander and the following mods:
http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/28/modsn.jpg
How can I transfer from Wilhelmshaven to bases in France? The date is 16 July 1940.

A question about your list:

You apply SH5 water after MEP 3...SH5 water isn´t compatible with MEP: the environment of SH5 overwrites the MEP. I think you see only SH5 water. If this mod is the 20 Km version, MEP sensors works OK. But if you use SH5 water 16k or 8k, the sensors.dat don´t work properly.

Can you combine the MEP and SH5 water with goods results? I think this combination is wrong...

Best regards.

Yes, I´ve read that thread, but they didn´t arrived to goods results. For a good combination of MEP with SH5 water, it´s needs work on S3D with the environment files.

Now, I´m watching the new environment mod by Hans Witteman, I hope will be the best. Hans is finishing the mod, and - after his commentary - it will be awesome.

Best regards.

For my new game intallation I've cobbled together a combination of v0.9 (20km) SH5 Water and MEPv3 along with some other files that I was always using either way.

It uses the scene.dat and all the EnvColors and SkyColors .dat files from SH5 Water, along with its Nori00, Nori01 and Senin .tga files.

From MEPv3, it uses the 12 SeaFoam .tga files plus the entire contents of the sensor pack for GWX3.

That seemed to be the best combination of what you'd get if you enabled MEPv3 + patch + GWX sensors pack, then enabled SH5 Water on top of it, but without adding the MEP flat sun fix (as discussed in comet61's thread on that experiment). I'm pretty sure rik007 intended v0.9 to take care of the flat sun issue at least for ATI users, so there's no need for MEP's Flat Sun Fix.

And I threw in the 12 1024x1024 foam .tga files from the Foam mod and the Peak.tga from Sober's 3D waves.

I have not spent much time in the game with this setup enabled, as I've just been starting test careers to get the game loaded and try out different mod combinations - but so far it looks fine. I'll have to see how the sensor settings work on the AI side once I get out on a real patrol.

Great! I´ll try your combo. How looks the water? (any screenshot?). In my SH3 GWX (in LSH3 I use the MEP LSH version), the SH5 water looks dark and with brownish shadows I don´t like. I have an ATI card. The MEP water looks...."aquatic", but the SH5 water looks "plain", without the bright and "aquosity" of MEP.

Many thanks!

I was using the same version of SH5 Water before reinstalling, and to me it looks exactly the same now given that I've only been putzing around in harbors for 10 minutes or so at a time to make sure everything loads properly and doesn't kill my FPS.

Which it should, since I'm not overwriting any of its files with anything else. Basically I'm just using SH5 Water in its totality along with the sensor pack from MEPv3 (since I'm assuming it was put together specifically for a 20 km environment) plus some .tga files from there and some other sources that I was already using with SH5 by itself anyway.

So I expected no real change in the scenery, the big question for me will be how using the sensor pack from MEP affects things.

Try it at your own risk, I haven't been using it except for the last couple of days and just for a few minutes at a time.

Frau Kaleun, help, please! I want to take some screenshots in my SH3...I use Fraps for that, but the "print" key go to CTD!!! It´s a problem with the HighRes Fix, I know that, but how to take screenshots with the Resfix???

Many thanks, your images are great, but I don´t like the SH5 water, no, no.

The Res Fix maps the screenshot function to the PrintScreen key, and I never had problems using it with my old setup. On some of those shots above, though, the game froze up on me. The first few times I was able to 'alt+tab' it to the taskbar and then pull it back up and it had unfrozen and gone back to normal but after the last attempt it finally froze completely and I had to pull up Task Manager to shut it down. It may have unfrozen on its own eventually but I was only making a test run and didn't want to wait around to find out.

I hate to think that I can't do screenshots any more, but it looks like whatever causes the CTD issue with the Res Fix is now an issue for me as well. I don't know any way around it because I've never had to find one before.

Environment mods are all a matter of taste and what your system can handle. If yours can run a 20km atmo you may find MEPv3 (the full mod, not the bits I pulled out of it) suits you better. TBH I didn't know how much I liked SH5 water until I was in the game without it, now it feels like something's missing if it's not there. And to be fair, cruising through the harbor on a relatively calm day doesn't really do it justice. The storms at sea are pretty awesome IIRC.

Thanks, Frau Kaleun. Now, I use - with relative success - the screenshot function of Kegety´s ResFix. It works, but I have some CTD in occasions. The FRAPS don´t work.

I have the MEP v3 atmosphere, 20 Km, and looks pretty in my GWX. The sensors work fine, too.

Of course, you can change the environment via SH commander, with the same "KM" (all 8km, all 16 km, all 20 km). For example, SH5 20k water with MEP v3 20k. The sensors are the same.

April 12, 1940, 13.40...Narvik

British TF (HMS Barham, 7 DD's) proceeding to Narvik, waiting for it at peri depth, estimated speed 20 knts

Fired TII torpedo at 1200 mts distance followed by a salvo of 3 TI torpedoes

Salvo missed

TII torp hit Barham on bow, fire broke out, cannot estimate damage because of crash dive to escape DD's

No free-cam option unchecked, so no further info about Barham

After 10 mins event cam shows Waespite sinking by bow...geezzzz...ONE hit!

Good job, Kaleun!

However, is all this realistic?

However, is all this realistic?

I dunno, but I had almost exactly the same experience in my last career.

Sighted that task force in the fjord heading towards Narvik, waited at periscope depth, fired all four bow tubes at the Warspite. Only one hit and I figured I'd never get a chance to finish her off because of all the DDs... but down she went. I assumed it was a lucky hit that blew up the engines or an ammo hold.

It is quite noticeable that the Warspite is 'relatively easy' to sink......simply put it down to early war beginners luck :DL

Gentlemen,

I'm attempting to get the GWX 3.2 Mod running. I've downloaded the Gold Edition from Filefront. I have all eight files and I know that I am supposed to "run" the GWX3.exe file. All the files seem to be generic in nature, is there something special I have to do in order to "run" them? Any help would be appreciated.

All eight files need to be saved to the same directory on your hard drive (you can put them all in the same folder, all on the desktop, whatever).

Doubleclick on the GWX3.exe file. That should start the installation, and the other seven files will be accessed as needed by the installer.

There have been issues in the past with Filefront not appending the .exe file extension to the GWX3.exe file when users download it, which means that when you doubleclick it Windows doesn't know what kind of file it is and asks how you want to open it.

If your copy of the file is missing the extension, just rightclick on it and choose Rename and add the .exe extension to the end of the filename. Then you should be able to doubleclick it like any other .exe and the installation will start. :yeah:

And if privateer were here, he'd tell you to make sure you turn your volume way up when you start the installation. :D

After 7 patrols starting 9/1/39 I think that

- escorts are little effective (maybe my attack-evading tactics is at best:DL)
- merchants are unarmed so you can sink them by shelling

Is this realistic?....my tonnage after 7 patrols is 200.000 tons

Kind of. Only two u-boat kaleuns had over two hundred thousand tons, and they both made sixteen patrols each. On the other hand several came close in seven patrols or less, so it certainly was possible.

On the other hand the game makes it much easier to find and sink ships, and no mod made has changed that.

Hi there,

I was looking around for a topic regarding whether or not the mod works with the ImpulseDriven download of the game or not?

I own a copy of the DVD, but don't feel like mucking around with getting it to work with Windows 7, so I went ahead and downloaded it in Impulse. I also hope to get a friend of mine to do so sometime soon as well, so if anyone can confirm or deny if this mod works with the Impulse version of SH3, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I have decided to reinstall SH3 GWX3, and as i lost some of my personal modifications, i need to redone them with small improvement.
Concerning the fatigue, i don't want to eliminate it totally but simply lower the effect
I had modified some parameter and i am not very sure of my mod because i did not see so effects:
Lowering [FatigueStep] number for each seamen and rising the negative [Fatigue_coef] for the the "compartment rest" will accelerate the rest and decrease the effect of fatigue. Right?

Hmm, I actually am having some random/odd issues all of a sudden.

Never had these problems before on XP 64-bit, running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit now and this is essentially what is happening.

I am receiving random crashes/game lockups, usually when I surface and try to auto position crew for the situation. It's only happening on my second career, starting in 1940 in the 2nd Flotilla with an IXB class U-boat.

The first time I noticed it happen, I was making my way to Greenland to resupply, found a British destroyer escorting two Auxiliary Cruisers, I torpedoed the middle cruiser and dived to 80 meters. I made my escape and as soon as I surfaced I tried to set up my crew with the auto button for surface cruise and the game froze.

I restarted the same career since I forgot to save any games, made plenty of saves this time. Went all the way up to Portland, sent two torpedo into the harbor, sank a freighter, made a desperate escape, then came in contact with an Empire-type Freighter, wasn't going to pass that up. Torpedoed it 3 times and it was still afloat, so I surfaced to finish it off, continued on my merry way before running into a large tugboat. I dove again in order to sneak up on it only to surface when I got closer to take it out with my deck gun. Problem was, the game crashed to desktop when I tried positioning my men on the deck gun. I went back to reload my saves and none of them are there, only a "phantom" save (it's not visible but is selected by default), saying I am dead.

I didn't die in that career, heck, I barely started. I never had these problems in my first career in the 2nd Flotilla in 1939, nor did I have these problems when I was on XP. Anyone have any possible solution?

I used to always use those buttons for moving crew around, and I never had any problems either.

Then I started reading about CTDs from using them and got spooked and haven't used them since.

I don't do a lot of crew rearranging in-game anyway unless I'm ordering the guns manned or assigning people to the repair team, in which case I just double-click the appropriate station to get people there.

I was touring the Eastern Med when war breaks out w/ Soviets. Finished my patrol there, decided to go to Constanza for some Black Sea action (I'm in a type 7b out of Lorient, I was putting in for ammo/fuel at Cadiz, sinking anything that went in or out that end of the strait of Gibraltar. Later went into Med and worked Eastward.) Went up the Bosphorous and slammed into a net, or more accurately over it since I ended up on top of it due to a swell in the sea. Barely survived, repaired, continued to Constanza. Ended patrol. New patrol, sub stuck in dock. Scratched my head, loaded at a point before entering Constanza, went to Warna. Ended patrol. New patrol has my sub on land rolling onto it's side...

SH3 Commander has a start at sea option but checking it seems to make no difference. Maybe I'm just not clear on how the Black Sea operations are supposed to work. I did install the Merged Campaign mod of GWX before starting this new patrol that has me starting on the beach...

Was hoping someone could please give me a heads up on what's going on.

Just starting a new career after a few months doing other things, and re-installed from fresh with a standard GWX3 and MFM setup, with just a few eye candy mods (port people, viz mines etc) on top.

Everything seemed to be running fine till I was tracking down a Merchantman in poor visibility (low winds) and decided to duck down for a listen. Hydrophone seemed to indicate that he was breaking up and sinking.

So, I closed in to confirm, and low 'n' behold he is chugging along merrily at 6 kts or so and definately not sinking. However, zooming in using free camera, I can hear the creaking but no engine/prop noise!

Now, a rustbucket tramp it may have been, but nothing needs THAT much oil, surely..

Joking aside, Im looking to try to repair rather than do the full reinstall on Win 7, so if anyone has come across the sinking sfx being called instead of the usual engine noises anywhere before, I'd greatly appreciate a pointer.

Cheers all,

Van

I haven't see that one, but in case you hadn't seen it elsewhere, be sure that when you installed the fresh SHIII you put it in a directory other than one of the "Program FIles" directory. I suggest you use something like:
C:\Games\Ubisoft...
It doesn't like to run properly from the default directory, and who knows if that could cause something like you are seeing. Better to be safe, even if you have to reload everything.

Already covered it, stowed away in c:\Games\SH3\..
Thanks for the response though, much apreciated.

Only seems to be the merchants, the ASW trawler and his two MTB friends that gave me hell in shallow water last night certainly sounded in fine voice.

You don't hear some Morse Code do you?

Hi Privateer.

The incidents have all been up at the top end of the irish sea, in the deep (ish) water channel that runs through the border between AM61 and AM64.

However, its first patrol (Oct 2nd 1940) and they were the first encounters, so it may happen elsewhere.

I dont recall hearing any Morse, but will load up now and have a listen to the next Medium merchant I find then confirm.

Update: Next encounter was a medium convoy in AM61. (Happy days!) I had a quick fly round on the free cam, and the escorts, tankers, aux cruiser and some of the merchants sound fine. Then I got to this one. No engine noise, just the sinking noises instead.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dom.ford/Med_Merch.jpg

Just getting into position on the convoy now and I'll ID it properly, but at first glance its smaller than the previous ship that was having the same issue.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dom.ford/Med_Merch_ID.jpg

Thats the one.

Cheers

Realised I had saved literally a couple of hours gametime before encountering that convoy, so exited, reloaded and re-encountered.

Different convoy makeup (No Aux cruiser, more can dropping escorts, different positioning/subclass of merchants.)

However, I found another sounding the same. Still a Medium Merchant class but a different unit. Different position within the convoy.

By complete accident I was able to re-create this problem.

I assigned a Unit as a Docked Ship,
I assigned it a speed of 10 knots,
I set the place on water in the sim to 00 or false.
In the Test Mission I set it's depth at -15 meters.

The ship moved on the surface,
It was wakes and such,
It's props do not turn,
and it plays that annoying sinking ship sound!

Might not be just those two, they were just two I found on that encounter, and I havent had the chance to see how many more I can find.

I have a feeling though, call it a programmers hunch, that the issue wont be with either the MFM nor GWX, but on how the two are combining in these particular circumstances, which I thought may have just been particular to my win7 install.

I was hoping it would be a simple fix like "Ah, you just need to copy this sound file into these locations as its got corrupted", but Privateer being able to recreate it via a test setup seems to sink that one.

So I'm curious as to why renown levels in SH3 with GWX3 seem to be much lower than in stock SH3, when the original renown values for better subs and upgrades are the same as in stock SH3? I mean, are you just supposed to sink more and/or bigger, more important ships? I've been on God knows how many patrols and I can't seem to find a nice fat BB or large tanker to put to the bottom of the briny deep. I keep picking off tramp steamers and small cargoes, making piddly for renown. I made it to 1500 renown once, then put a damn neutral passenger ship to the bottom :damn: because I shot blind and at night using the hydrophone triangulation method. Any suggestions? I would really like to get that XXI, if I make it that long :o

Under "Revisions to the Renown System" in the GWX manual it mentions that renown for reaching your patrol grid and staying there 24 hours as ordered has been removed from the game. (The renown for returning all the way to base never worked, so its value was also changed to '0' with no effect on gameplay.)

IIRC it also increases the renown required for some medals.

Many of the changes GWX makes to the game are there to make it more realistic, which usually means more difficult in many respects.

You can increase your starting renown by passing one of the Academy tests, the Navigation one is easy and passing it will give you a bit of a leg up where renown is concerned.

Other renown related settings can be changed by opening the basic.cfg in Notepad and editing the data there. In the lines

[RENOWN]
RenownReachGridObjCompleted=0
RenownPatrolGridObjCompleted=0
CompletedPatrol=0
NEUTRAL=-1
ALLIED=1
AXIS=-10
WrongShipSunk=-5000
FirstRankRenown=100
SecondRankRenown=350
EndCampaign=-5000

you can add renown rewards for reaching your grid and staying 24 hours by changing the '0' in the first two lines to whatever you like.

I checked a few of the GWX renown values for ships against the values in the stock game's data\Sea files, there doesn't appear to be any difference in the ones I looked at.

As far as not being able to find any juicy targets - that could be bad luck, but GWX does strive to be more realistic, and in RL targets (especially the juicy ones) were few and far between. Many u-boats went out on patrol and came home after several weeks without having sunk anything or even caught sight of an enemy target.

Your best bet for finding more targets is to check the pull down SH3 map when you're at the Navigation station and look at the location of the main shipping lanes. Park yourself along one of those and you'll have better luck... for early in the war I recommend the Western Approaches to England, where ships must pass either to the north or south of Ireland and then into the Irish Sea to gain access to the western UK ports. Ships must eventually pass through those waters to reach their destination, and geography becomes your ally.

If you can find and sink the larger merchant vessels then you won't ever be short of renown. The chances of finding a good target is not purely random as some locations seem to be consistently better for hunting then others...

I might be just lucky but I always tend to find lone large merchant vessels when I'm patrolling just north of the Shetland Islands (Lerwick) which is one of my favourite spots if I'm sailing a type II.

If you have a larger boat like a VIIB then try the North Atlantic and go for convoys. A convoy will generally consist of a good mix of small and large ships and if you are lucky you may find a capital ship sailing with them. So far in my early war experience, patrolling just north of Rockall Bank and the BE30 grids seem to be good spots for intercepting convoys.

Also it is a good idea to refer to the merchant traffic route map for more hunting spots.

And be aware that the amount of renown you'll receive relates directly to your difficulty settings. So (if you are not doing this already) playing with map contacts off, manual targeting and realistic sensors etc can potentially yield you much more for each sinking.

Hope this helps...

I have no idea at this time.
I was working on something completely different with a stock Unit when it started palying the sinking sounds!
That rang the bell about the issue I responded to.
I did several tests then.

What I found in my tests was this,
IF the Unit is not set to put on water in the sim AND has a negative depth in the Missions stuff?
It will play that sound.
IF the Unit is not set to put on water in the sim?
It's props DON'T SPIN, but it will move and show wakes and such.

I didn't watch it long enuff to see if it ever did sink.
But it sounded like it would scare everyone into Life Boats!

So it's more like something is telling the game that a ship meets the "requirements" for triggering the sinking sound sfx, even though something else is telling it that the ship is actually still chugging along on the surface and therefore not sinking. :hmmm:

For both the ships, M37B and M39B (as IDed by Sailor Steve upthread):

put_on_water=True

Those appear to be correct as far as the Game is concerned.
Even if in a Mission or a scripted Campaign file as a negative height?
They should not play the sinking effect.
For the most part,
A Ship scripted at a negative value will ignore the value and just run surfaced as normal.

This is easy to test in a single Mission.
Pick a Ship. Any Ship.
NO! NOT THAT ONE!
:haha:
Script it at -15 for height at a speed of say 10 knots.
Then look at it in Game.

You will need to download all 7 GWX3 .bin files plus the GWX3.exe file (unless you use torrent to get the full version in one download).

Save them all to the same location on your hard drive. When finished downloading, double-click on the .exe file to begin the installation.

GWX must be installed over a clean, unmodded installation of SH3 v1.4.

If you use SH3 Commander you will also need the config files for Commander + GWX3, get the self-installer called GWX3_CFG_for_SH3Commanders.exe also at the link noted above.

As has been mentioned in other threads, many times, ships are not removed from the game. So if we sink them all, we're just gonna encounter them again, and again, and again.

Hi mate

If you have several .bin files and a .exe file then all is good ensure they are all in the same dir (folder) and that you have a clean install of sh3 patched to 1.4 then simply hit the .exe (the file with the paw print).

Hope all goes well.

As I understand it you need to put all seven files in one folder, then just double-click File 1. If nothing happens, put the cursor over File one and see what it says. If it only says 'GWX' you need to change the name to 'GWX.exe' and try again. It will then install itself.

GWX sends you out on a short shakedown cruise for experience before you get thrown into the real deal. Are you starting in August 1939? I'm not sure if it does that if you start your career when the war is already on.

The war doesn't start until Sept 1, and then only with Poland - not with England and France until Sept. 3, so if you are starting in August '39 there is no one to shoot at anyway because there's no war and everyone is still neutral.

If you are starting from Konigsberg, you'll have orders to do "target practice" on some ships that are conveniently scattered around nearby, and you'll lose renown for it (because the game considers them all neutral still) but GWX will have given you extra renown if you start from that flotilla to make up for it. (But stay away from any armed units - even your own - for 24 hours after you do any shooting, otherwise they'll fire on you because shooting at people when there's no war on makes you a rogue kaleun and they'll be after your hide!)

If you start from somewhere else in August 1939, just do your short shakedown patrol and return to base and then start a second patrol, which should put you out at sea closer to the start of the war.

GWX removes the renown reward for going to your assigned grid and doing the "required" 24 patrol there, so the only reason to follow those particular orders is because you want to for the sake of realism.

Here is what I did with the steam version.

I went to the steam apps folder and made a copy of the shIII game folder. I renamed that folder shIII GWX. I had two exact games folders now. I added the mod to the shIII GWX folder.

This left me with a vanilla install of SHIII and another install of SHIII with GWX. I then went to my steam library, and added a non steam game link and added the location of the SHIII GWX install as the new game. I renamed it in steam so when it pops up it says Silent Hunter III with GWX 3.0.

So after testing both installs, all works well.

MY QUESTION IS, how does this effect career files? Theres just the SHIII folder in my documents. I assume I might have to back that up.

Make a backup of each SH3 folder in the mydocuments. You can swap them out as needed, but make sure you get the right folder with the right app, as they will both read the same folder and it may cause conflicts. But the careers folder is "hot-swappable" i believe, as I have just saved that folder as a backup and swapped it into new installs.

Rename each one to individually correspond with the installation the saves are from.

When Game starts my orders are to patrol grid "whatever".....which am I supposed to do ?
What I do is a quick shake-down, which consists of a quick trip around the harbor. next I use Commander to set the Days In Port to 18. My next patrol starts on August 19, which is when fourteen u-boats were sent to the North Atlantic and told to wait. That way I get to make one free trip through the Channel and am in position on September 3. :D

Afterwards of course I reset Commander's Days In Base to 'Random'.

Sneaky? Well, since there were a bunch of boats on station I don't see why mine shouldn't be one. Then again I didn't see much traffic, and came home with four ships total.

On the other hand I only did that with my 2nd Flot boat. My 1st Flot Type II didn't make her first voyage until September 26. I haven't started the career in my 7th boat, but she probably won't put out any sooner. On the other hand her assigned grid will be AO95.

In a good (stealthy - a.k.a. silent hunting) sort of way...

Too bad, still a good idea though. Never hurts being in the first echelon.

My 1st Flot Type II didn't make her first voyage until September 26..

Wow, call me before the war's over...

I can almost hear the old war story now. Must have gone something like this:

"What did you do in the war daddy?"

"Well son, we spent the first month tied up at the dock, and then when we finally set sail we pretty much just hugged the shore." :lol:

Some questions about the environments in GWX 3.0:

The "stock GWX" environment is a 8 KM environment?

What is the "polygon removed/reduced" environment in GWX 3? Only the 16 Km? Or the "stock GWX" also?

The question is how I see both environments: the "stock GWX" looks better in my machine, and it seems to have no polygons effects...I see the fog better in the "stock GWX" env.

Many thanks and best regards.

All players in multi play must have the same setup as the person who hosts the online session...a few exceptions are boat skins and gramaphone tracks.

Just reading the GWX manual about approaching a convoy and it states "Your lookouts will generally let you know the general type of each ship eg cargo, coastal vessel, destroyer etc"

Yup, there's no penalty for 'ignoring' orders and sailing where-you-will, or --- you can simply put the renown back in.

IMO, (from a late war realism point of view) it actually is somewhat of an achievement to return successfully from an assigned patrol grid. So, if you want to reinsert simply navigate to:

SH3\data\Cfg\Basic.cfg

Then scroll down (should be three items from the top) to:

[RENOWN]
RenownReachGridObjCompleted=0
RenownPatrolGridObjCompleted=0
CompletedPatrol=0
NEUTRAL=-1
ALLIED=1
AXIS=-10
WrongShipSunk=-5000
FirstRankRenown=100
SecondRankRenown=350
EndCampaign=-5000

and edit the Renown values to taste.

Last but not least, enjoy the extra renown! :up:

I don't care if there's renown involved or not. I go to my assigned grid and stay there for at least two weeks, and even if ordered to move (die roll) I still don't move more than one grid over.

Renown was indeed removed for reaching then remaining in patrol grid for 24 hours but we never touched the return to base renown.....it's never worked http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2391/bubblegum21.gif

Thanks for the help Sailor Steve, still not sure I know what I'm doing....the files I have in the mods folder are off my external hard drive from another computer so I don't know if i should simply delete them, or if I can use them for anything. I screen captured the folder but inserting an image requires it to be online already or something.

I have been playing sh3 on low realism settings, right now i think i've gone through several patrols. its a great game, but i think i have the stock fatigue thing worked out...as long as i have the time compression up to 128, there seems to be no fatigue. when i reach my patrol grid i cruise at ahead standard, 1/2 hour before change of watch i dive the boat and run silent so we can listen for any distant contacts. after the change of watch we remain submerged and silent for another half hour. before surfacing i go to ahead standard again to periscope depth to check the surface before surfacing.

I find myself playing the stock sh4 quite often though i enjoy my uboat campaign. just returned from a mission where i had to hunt down a pair of british KG5 battleships.

when i reach my patrol grid i cruise at ahead standard,
I always use Ahead 1/3 (#2 position) to get to and from my assigned grid, and Ahead Slow (#1 position) once I'm there. Fuel lasts a lot longer that way.

Hello SH3ers,

Hi jimbuna :),

I sent you a PM a couple of weeks ago because using the search engine I had found an old post of you showing a couple of cruisers I was interested in. By then I didn't have SH3, so there was no way I could know they belonged to GWX. After that I had my copy of SH3 from the mail and when installed GWX I found out that the "Garibaldis" where in that mod :arrgh!:.

As time passed with no reply I tried Kpt. Lehmann, but also no answer, so I decided to try again with your account a few days ago, as I had seen you were active in the forums, and later, just to make sure, I wrote that post.

Jimbuna

Then I should apologise because I honestly can't recall your PM.

I'll have a look at whose work those cruisers are and come back to you.

Edit: What ships were they again?

There are a few details on or around page 500 of the GWX manual...point me to them if you'd be so kind.

No need to apologise :salute:.

Italian ships are from page 370 in GWX 3.0 manual. I was interested in the Condottieri cruisers (page 374), the MAS motorboat (page 375) and possibly the French Bourrasque class destroyer (page 317, the Italians seized one of them after the Toulon affair).

Thanks for your help :up:.

Can we now take this to PM because Condottieri appears to be GWX work and the Bourrasque is partially GWX.

What I can say publicly is...the MAS model is the work of 'Noline' and as I am unaware of who he is it would not be possible for me to give permission to use somebody elses work, he may have given Kpt. Lehmann said permission but I am honestly unaware.

SH3 Commander isn't a mod, it's a stand-alone program. You do not need to enable it with JSGME, you don't even need JSGME to use it. All you have to do is install it and point it at your SH3 game installation.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=2923

If you are playing GWX you will also need the config files for Commander + GWX3, which you should install after you install Commander itself.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1421

The folders in your MODS folder for GWX Fix French, Lite Harbor Traffic, etc., are optional mods that came with GWX. You do not need to enable them unless you want to use them. There are full explanations for all of them in your GWX manual, a .pdf that also came with your GWX installation.

It sounds like it could be a video or sound driver issue. Are you experiencing issues with any other programs?

In cases like this, the usual first steps are to try turning down your hardware acceleration and then (if necessary) look into updating your video and/or sound drivers.

Another option is to edit the TC values in SH3 Commander and then launch the game to test if the issues are still present.

Hope you get it sorted. :sunny:

SH3 GWX and a lot of mods runs fine in my W7 64 bits.

Please:

Install in C:\ or your root HD (not in "program files", the default folder installation).

Run SH3 with administrator rights.

Verify the Windows defender, firewall, AV, etc...

Regards.

Hello, Is there a way in GWX 3.0 to make ships appear on map in green, blue or red colors according to their nations like in the original game?

I am pretty new to this game, actually i still can not properly calculate and fire a manual torpedo, whenever i have weap. off. calculate the solution we miss the target and laugh at each other (even if he is a bad naval officer, he is a fun guy)

And What should I do when a destroyer notices me and comes towards me at full speed?

EDIT: I think I found it here http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=33

^^This mod will return the friendly/enemy/neutral color-coding to the contact icons on your nav map.

Some people never get the hang of manual targeting, some aren't even interested in using it, I haven't tried it yet myself. Maybe some day when real life isn't providing me with my minimum daily requirement of frustration. :O:

There are some RN ships that a u-boat could outrun on the surface, I expect GWX models max speeds pretty well so trying that is always an option if conditions (dark night, weather, etc.) have made it easier to get out of his visual range.

However anything that leaves you vulnerable to his gunfire (even if you are pulling away from him on the surface) is probably a bad idea.

If you can't get out of range on the surface, dive, and quickly. Early in the war, in particular, Allied ASW is not that great (unless you run into an "elite" ASW crew) and if you get deep enough they usually can't touch you. Then it's just a matter of staying quiet and deep until they give up and go away.

Hmmm... urban legends and conspiracy theories! :hmmm:

I think that the team should take it as a compliment that such controversies arise on occasion.

At any rate, I hate to keep disappointing hopeful people, but there is no new GWX project in the works. GWX is a project that remains gracefully retired.

Hi thehiredgun,
Unfortunately mate, FM's interior mods are not part of GWX. You may have better luck presenting your problem in a calm fashion on FM's interior mod thread.:03:

frau kaleun

@thehiredgun: the FM Interiors mod is for the Type VII boats only. It contains no interior files for the Type IXs so, no, even if you have it enabled it will not give you new expanded interiors if you are playing a Type IX. :DL

As Steed said: that's the way it is.
I load the game and go get a drink, hit the head, and check my mail.
The only way around this long loading problem is to get a $10.000 computer.

Welcome to SubSim captaintex...the length of time it takes to load the game is down to the fact EVERYTHING in the SH3 world is loaded as one piece of information (this is now an old game engine) however, I am currently using a quad core processor with 8GB RAM anf my GWX loads in under two minutes, so it is possible, with a fairly modern system (for those lucky enough to possess one...and I certainly didn't during the development of all the GWX versions) to shorten the load times considerably.

Im used to UBI's games, so i feared that it was little to do with the loadingtime. But its a great game with the GWX mod. I have a pretty old system, so it might have something to do with it aswell. After my hard drive crashed last year, I too invested in a powerful pc - FalconNW Mach V, Intel quad processors, 12 Gb RAM, dual video SLI cards, etc. but what made a big difference in GWX load times was the 256Gb solid state drive. GWX loads in under 1 minute. Not bragging (this time) - just offering that as a suggestion for when the time comes to replace yours. It was all that pc horsepower or a new pickup - what a dilemma! :har:

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:

First question: Did you go out in August 1939 and sink some ships? GWX allows you to start that early so you can go to your patrol zone and wait for September 3, which is when British and Allied ships become legitimate targets (Germany invaded Poland on Sept 1, so they are targets at that time). In August all countries are neutral or friendly, so attacking their ships makes you then enemy of everyone, including Germany.

Stock:
Attack Periscope: 1.5x, 6x
Observation Periscope: 1x, 4x

GWX:
Attack Periscope: 1.5x, 10x

This was done because in 6x you can't see as clearly as you can in real life. I don't use it myself, but it's a very good idea, especially for people who do everything manually.

Real Life:
All periscopes are 1.5x and 6x. This is true for pretty much every navy.

The mod you want to make them historically correct is this one:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1519

Or with S3D you can change the parameters yourself, which is what I had to do to make it work with all the other mods I'm using.

WOW GWX is EXCELLENTE!!:up::up:Two thumbs up!!!

I have been trying to find a more realistic gamestyle of the dive and evade part of sub warfare.I just re-re-re-reinstalled GWX and was amazed at how real it all looked when watching from above.You do not notice the amount of work that goes into a mod if you start off with them.....its sad in a way.The escorts notice the submarine pretty quick and start firing away while you submerge,with a high chance of destroying your scope as you watch all calmly.:up:They ping and follow you as you evade to then drop the depth charges as close to you.It looked so real as night fell and 3 ships with high beams searched like crazy depth charging and all.Such a major difference from stock SH3.Just a few things I noticed that are not good BUT this is from a godseye perspective and so I wouldn't have such an advantage evading them.

At one point I got hit on the stern crew quarters and started to flood.What happened next never happened to me before.The whole sub tilted on its end with the flooded stern dropping like a rock.Very kool and if its normal Sh3 it was still my first time:rock:My hats off to the devs of GWX,I bow to your mod and your kindness of making it for the community.

EDIT<<<<<just wanna link this excellent post by OP Ducimus.Its about the sensors in GWX and really explains it well.Its taken me a long time to finally know what I know about ASW and just got schooled some more in this excellent post.I think it should be stickied for good since many newcomers will be so lost as I was.:03:

Then you guys rock!!!It actually forced the bow out of the water it was so severe.I decided to dive with flank speed and main pumps back on with DD right above me.No other choice.:up:That added a great gameplay aspect!!

That was so kool and reminds me that alot can be done to further the underwater part of Sh3.I am dreaming of having access to the main ballast tank,the negative tank and the emergency tank.Would love to be more in tune with diving and the ballast tank control and the compressed air supply that from reading was very valuable.In Sh3 its kinda non existent.

Things like each torpedo fired will cause balance issues as you lose that mass.The ship compensates by flooding the tube with water.But to load a new torpedo you need CA to blow the tube dry.So each torpedo load will drop CA slightly.

The negative tank......when your being searched for and at PD with 1 to 2 kts the boat dives so freaking slow.Flood the negative tank dropping the bow and speeding up the dive with consequence of using more of the precious CA.Also would think that blowing and filling it would allow one to be slightly buoyant and slightly heavy so that you can hover with no speed.....wasting more CA.:arrgh!:

Finally the emergency tank.....had enough water to fill a tank the size of the conning tower in case it flooded.Would love being able to blow this tank.We have all been there and having an emergency tank just in case would be sweet.Your reaching critical depth,the flooding has stopped but boat is holding a ton of water,you have blown ballast and your batteries are dying not giving enough juice to power the sub back up.What do we do Kaleun?!?!? Save us!!!

I have a dream and it would be sweet!:haha:

I noticed that it seems like their depth charges seem score direct hits anddestroy the sub time and time again the instant I rig for silent. Check this link for the MD5 Checksums: http://www.thegreywolves.com/downloads/

You will need MD5Mate (which is not available form that page) but you can get it here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/MD5Mate.shtml

Then, open the application, choose each GWX file and use the corresponding checksum to do a compare. The application will tell you when it finds the corrupt file.

When they are pinging you,wait till SO says "depth charges in the water" and then flank ahead and turn.Some may not know how it all works and its very hard even when you do.Put your SO to follow nearest warship and try to keep him at your 180 to reduce the amount of your ship your presenting.I do not go deep and survive this way(around 70m tp 100m)....though I am in Type IIa with max 100m dive depth and am not even past 1941.

Add TMT ThomsensShips fix provides compatibility for Thomsens Ships (or TMT + Thomsens Ships) and Extras for the Wilhelmshaven campaign.

I believe instructions are included in WB's documentation for the latter, and you should consult them to be sure, but if I remember correctly the correct order is:

GWX 3 Wilhemshafen,St Naz,Schluese and xtra ships V6
Extras for the Wilhelmshaven campaign v2.4c
TMT v2 + Thomsens Ships
Add TMT ThomsensShips fix

In any case the fix must be enabled after you enable the two mods whose conflicts it fixes.

Acording to the manual,if I do understand well,you only have "+rewon" if you pass each tutorial from the Naval AcademY and if you skink Ships.O.k

Now I have a doubt:

Do you have rewon penalty if you return from patrol whith some torpedos on board??.

Thank you for your help.:DL

Anvart did mods that will give you the pennants and flags noted on the picture plus control of the radar antenna:

For a super duper "upgrade" to your turms, check out Aces' stuff:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=184132

His Super Turms mods are compatible with Anvart's mods and a whole bunch of others, plus he gives very detailed instructions for their use and order of enabling. You can use his own mod list, which he usually posts along with the instructions, as a reference. :yeah:

Also: there is no renown penalty for returning to base without using all your ammo, you just won't get the reward you might have gotten for using it successfully.

As far as I know the only way to lose renown is by sinking neutral or friendly ships, or a hospital ship regardless of its nationality.

If you are playing GWX, you can earn all the available Academy renown just by passing the test from one of the tutorials. (Take the navigation test, it's the easiest to pass). The others you can just use for training if you want.

Fire and go deep right away (200M usually works) as fast as you can, then go silent and drop your speed just a little bit more than silent running sets it.:yep:

So when after firing torpedo's I dive at full speed, the escorts won't hear me, and the convoy won't start zig-zagging..?

The escorts will know you're around if you get a hit, and will come looking for you. And IME, yes, the convoy may change course or scatter somewhat if only to avoid hitting damaged ships that are dead in the water or no longer making speed.

The idea is to get away from where you were when you fired the eels, and go deep - and then rig for silent running - all of which will make it harder for them to figure out where you are by the time they know to start actively hunting for you. It's not a guarantee of a successful getaway, but if you have to escape submerged it's your best option.

What I meant is; won't the escorts hear me when I dive with my engines at full speed, before torpedo impact?
