Which resolution mod is good for latest GWX? I tried the DX9res v1.0 by Kegetys, but the game crashes with that one.

Afraid I couldn't say because I've never used any specific mod. I've always ran GWX at 1920x1080 on a 24" widescreen monitor.

I have a problem with GWX, crashes when I start a patrol. i have the steam version of SH3, my operative system is Windows 7 Pofessional service pack 1.

Give Conus SH3GWXWS 2.3 a try that has worked well for me with GWX.

I do have problem with GWX - no matter what I do, I can´t load a saved career.

It just crashes after loading, either with "not so long ago" or right before it.

I already tried steps here on forum, regarding setting the "read only" off on the career files and installation location, disabling some mods included in GWX etc.

I think that my career.tga file is corrupted, since the saved single missions load without any issues, even with full modding from GWX enabled.

Could someone with working GWX upload the career.tga file somewhere?

I read on one of the forums it could help.

Frankly, I am missing the working SH3 with GWX and this is last option which I currently have.

Any other advice would be most welcome. :(

As I see this is an older thread, I hope to shed a little lite on my recent save/corrupt/career problems in SH3.

WinXP machine w/2G RAM Pentium 4 CPU w/Nvidia 6800 GPU + SH3 from original disk patched + SH3 Commander + GWX and a few simple realism mods. Playing at 74% realism.

Having learned more, here on SUBSIM, about why crash/saves happen it lead me to a fix of sorts in which a certain problematic commander's career experienced ongoing crashes and recovery, e.g., the save would load and play just fine but crash when loading other times.

In either case, SH3 Commander would load SH3 all the way to the selected commander's saved career list just fine. The game would crash where the selected saved game loaded itself all the way to the "Long ago" screen then goes black then dumps you to Microsoft error reporting - cannot load, etc,.

The culprit, if it can be called that, was at this commander's saved games list screen; I scrolled up the list to inspect saved games dates and sure enough, there was a date out of sequence with the rest of the list. EXAMPLE: real-time game save dates Oct 2 2015 thru to the present date of last game save Sept 21 2916 ---- in that list a single date was out of sequence with the dates BEFORE and AFTER it. Why is unknown.

Naturally, if you delete that errant out-of-sequence entry everything after it is gone too. But what else to do if you wish to save that career at least up to that point in time?

Depending on how far back in the saved games history the out-of-sequence date is, you may not lose much of that commander's career however, in my case I had to delete nearly half a year of real-time game saves, what a shame.

Now, whenever I reach the page to load this commander's saved games, I scroll up the list to verify that date sequence is in order. Thus far I have not experienced any out of sequence game saves and things are going along swimmingly.

No, I just rejoice too early :(

I can load whatever single mission is offered, I can load different saves to my wishes, as long as it is not career related.

So, could anybody please upload working career.tga for GWX3.0?

This is the only file I could identify, which can not relate to the mission entries.

Other files are in use afaik, the game has to use the same GUI, effects, sea behaviour etc. since you are still running the same u-boot as in careers.

Have you run Large Address Aware to allow your version to run in more than 2GB memory? LAA let's it use as much as is available. You can find it in the Downloads section of this forum. Good Luck!

I am not familiar with the patch you referenced. You should consider the Large Address Aware program. I have 12 GB RAM. LAA let my system use as much memory as is available. I also run a freeware program called Game Booster, which shuts down unneeded programs, processes, and services while the game is running. You need to maximize the game's ability to use all available memory to gain full enjoyment and prevent CTD's. But, it's your choice, Captain.

I have been told by others on the forum that there is a conflict between the 4Gb patch and Large Address Aware. Apparently if you have a 64 bit system you do not, and should not use the 4Gb patch. The latest mod releases from the FOTARS mod team include Large Address Aware and not the 4Gb patch.

You may want to consider changing from the 4Gb patch to run LAA instead. It will allow you to find and select any executable (SH3.exe and SH4.exe for example). Pretty simple to use. Your call.

I dunno who told you differently, but the two programs do exactly the same thing. It doesn't matter which one you use.

The ONLY difference is 4GB patch only lets you turn it on. LAA lets you turn it back off, plus some other useless stuff. If you were to turn it off in LAA, then use 4gb patch.. then re-run LAA you would see its back on. It's just a simple edit of a flag inside the .exe file's header, and there's only one way to do it.

It came from someone on the FOTARS Ultimate team, maybe Propbeanie or CapnScurvy, but it doesn't matter. LAA works for me so I'll continue to use it. Thanks for the input.

Hey guys. I've been playing around with latest version of GWX for a while and I noticed some annoying inconsistencies with convoy battles. First of all, not unlike lone ships, they don't even move in a predictable fashion. If you receive a contact update from BdU with position and heading of a lone ship, it's still quite easy to intercept it even from a long distance. Completely different story with convoys - BdU gave me a completely wrong direction of it. When I did find it with some trial and error, I noticed that it did a random course change every few hours or so, that made it extremely difficult to get close for shooting.
Another thing - detection by destroyers and merchant ships. My battle happened at a relatively light autumn night of 1939, so no radars for anyone. At one point I got as close as 200 m to a merchant column without getting spotted, I saved there and after reloading all the merchants around were pointing their spotlights at me. After loading another save and experimenting a bit, I found that the safe distance was around 700 m for merchants and 1500 m for destroyers. So what's the problem? Turns out another destroyer moving at the front of the convoy can easily spot me from around 3500-4000 m for no reason.
Anyway, I find this AI behavior to be really annoying. This whole battle was an inconsistent mess with random convoy movement and detection distances. Am I doing something wrong perhaps?? Also, do other mega-mods (NYGM, LSH3) fix this behavior? Thanks in advance

Don't make game saves within at least 25km of other game units and be advised the skill levels of the escorts can vary from green to expert, tending to rise as the war progresses.

Thanks for the welcome guys :) Again, this AI behaviour just seems to be so odd. Encountering an expert-crew destroyer in 1939 that can spot me with no radar in the middle of the night from a massive distance is just too unlikely IMO. I've downloaded LSH3 actually, hopefully it will do better once I get it to run properly

Hello to everyone.
Been quite a loyal fan to the SH series tho never participated openly in communities.
I ve decided to come back to Silent Hunter 3 after a very long break. Subbed to the Subsim site, which is still an awesome place :D and got the GWX mod. Got it working, but after making the hi res. fix it keeps crashing upon mission load.
Would appreciate if somebody has any idea how to work around the problem :o

Btw made a full run of stock SH3 campaign before-hand, you know like a back-to basics campaign. :up: Made a pretty good run on 80% realism. And made the decision to up the level of the game.

Got it working ...sort of managed to get nearly 190k GRT sunk so far, but those crashes with the save game file are killing me literally :o :o
I ll try and find some workaround but its a big killjoy lel

I have allways enjoyed GWX, but the thing that allways bothered me is that (for me at least) its somehow unstable, with CTDs happening every now and then.

Recently this problem has gotten a lot worse, to the point where i can almost no longer play it.

Im currently in mid 1941, near the Gibraltar strait, and i receive a radio report of a convoy. I set course to intercept it, and the minute i get close to it, the game CTDs.

I dont have many mods, mainly Manos enviroment, HSIE patch, and MaGUI. Still i disable them one by one and try again, no luck. The game crashes predictably at the exact moment i approach the convoy.

So i delete everything, clean install of the game & GWX.
Load the save game and BAM! as soon as i approach that convoy, CTD.

Ok, maybe the save game is corrupted or something? i scrap that patrol, loaded the latest "In game after mission" save and start a new patrol.
Arround the same area as before (CG87) another report, convoy, but its not the same convoy as before, this one is going on a different direction.
Intercept course!
Can you guess what happened when i got near to it? :Kaleun_Mad:
And same deal as before, no ammount of removing mods can fix it.
Its so consistent i can tell the EXACT time the game will CTD (00:03).

Its as if some convoy configurations are incorrect and cause the game to crash when the game spawns them in sight?

Remembering back, it seems that most my CTDs with GWX occur when convoys are nearby.

So my system is at fault maybe? video drivers, bad ram etc.?
Seems unlikely to me, since i also run another installation of SH3 in paralel, that one with NYGM-2017A, HSIE patches, MaGUI, MEPv6, and i have never had one single CTD. Not one. The game is flawless.

Its so frustrating, i really like GWX, but this constant crashing makes it just impossible for me to enjoy it.

Could it be an error in a convoy definition? maybe game is trying to load a ship that doesnt have textures for it or something?
It seems obvious to me that the problem happens when certain convoys are arround.
Any ideas of what i could do to fix this problem???

What Damage effects in hsie option do you mean? the only option in the options selector app i see is diesel damages, is that the one you mean? if so no, i dont have it enabled.
Also, i have tried disabling every single mod one by one, until JSGME is empty. Same problem. Even after a full game + GWX install i get the same problem.

After a lot of trial and error, restarting the same patrol, and using the free camera, i managed to get a little closer to the convoy (same one allways spawns, near the gibraltar strait), and i noticed that at least two of its ships are on fire! and i mean really on fire! they are both engulfed in flames!
Needless to say i havent touched them, the weather is calm (no rough seas), and i dont see any reason why they would be so damaged. I tried several times to get closer to inspect the rest of the convoy, but the game allways crashes before i can get near.

I guess this is some sort of error in the game? maybe this is related to the problem? Why would those ships be burning up?

Wanted to get some pictures of the burning ships, but Now i cant even get close again. Game crashes shortly after loading the save game i just made when i was approaching the convoy.

Please note that i have tried it without the hsie patch, and have the same problem.

you are in single mission or carrier?i am in career mode.

start by sh3 commander or not? No commander, normal start.

PC Specs:
Windows 7 Professional x64
Intel i5
8GB RAM
Nvidia GTX750ti graphics - drivers up to date
Asus motherboard.

I dont understand why those ships in the convoy are on fire, maybe thats part of the problem?

I have tried something...
- I activated my usual mod list (as shown in a past post).

- I started the patrol again (loaded the last "in base after mission" save and started new patrol)

- I got assigned the same grid, and when i was close to the area the same convoy radio report came in. (thats the convoy that has burning ships).

- This time, i ignored the report, and went the opposite way of the convoy, so i never got close to it.
This time the game has not crashed so far. I need to look for another convoy to see if the other convoys also have ships on fire, and if the game crashes when i get near to them.

Its so consistent i can tell the EXACT time the game will CTD (00:03).

Its as if some convoy configurations are incorrect and cause the game to crash when the game spawns them in sight?

Remembering back, it seems that most my CTDs with GWX occur when convoys are nearby.

So my system is at fault maybe? video drivers, bad ram etc.?
Seems unlikely to me, since i also run another installation of SH3 in paralel, that one with NYGM-2017A, HSIE patches, MaGUI, MEPv6, and i have never had one single CTD. Not one. The game is flawless.

Its so frustrating, i really like GWX, but this constant crashing makes it just impossible for me to enjoy it.

Could it be an error in a convoy definition? maybe game is trying to load a ship that doesnt have textures for it or something?
It seems obvious to me that the problem happens when certain convoys are arround.
Any ideas of what i could do to fix this problem???

from what you write seems almost a ram problem....but with 8 gb is impossible!!!
probed run like administrator... and in compatible mod?I too dont think its a RAM problem. On this PC i run Doom (2016 version not the old ones), XCOM2, and other demanding games, they run without issue.
Even SH3 with NYGM runs perfectly.

I will continue to try to get GWX to work, but i need to take a few days off. Ill play some NYGM for a while, then ill get back to try to get GWX to work.

My GTX750ti has 2GB of DDR5 RAM (its gigabyte brand), HD is 1TB Maxtor, mechanical (non SSD).
As for running into convoys on NYGM, i played for several hours last night, attacked 3 convoys without issue (other than getting depthcharged for hours lol), and one of them was quite large, no CTDs, slowdowns, no issues at all.

Only issue i ever had with NYGM, was a few days ago when i tried to use the "wolfpack" feature i got a strange CTD, but i tried it last night and worked without issue.

Now that you mention LSH3, i too recall having some issues with it, but then again i only played it for a little while (too easy for my taste, too slow to load) but i do recall a couple of CTDs there.

As for giving my PC an enema, i will just to be safe, but i usually do it once a month (i use ccleaner), my disk is 0% fragmented according to windows.

I just can firgure out. I am "computer saavy" myself (i work in IT), and i just cant put my finger on it. PC has zero issues outside sh3+GWX, even far more demanding games (xcom2, doom 2016, stellaris, etc) work flawlessly, Visual Studio 2015 runs perfectly, etc. Heck, sh3 works flawlessly! just not with gwx :(
But then again, tons of people play with GWX without too many problems. Im starting to think that my save files on my campaign are somehow corrupted maybe?
I did try to start new patrols several times, instead of starting on on-sea saved games, but maybe somehow the whole campaign saves are corrupted somehow?

I appreciate you help, will try to solve this issue later, but for now, im gonna play some more with nygm.

Decided to try again to get GWX going without crashes.
Since i concluded that it wasnt a mod compatibility issue, i decided to load up my old mod list, with xtra stuff. So i reinstalled SH3 and GWX (again), and activated the following modlist:

So i loaded my last "in base before mission" save (same one as before), and sure enough, got the same convoy report, near Gibraltar, and as soon as i approached, CTD.

I then loaded the same save again, but this time i changed flotillas from the 2nd, to the 1st. And i changed my flak gun about 50 times just to advance time. I moved forward by about 4 months, to late 1941.
This time i completed 3 patrols, intercepted 3 different convoys (several attacks to each one), one of them near Gibraltar, with zero CTDs! :salute:

Here is the intercept on the convoy near Gibraltar (note the grid, its almost the same one as before) but this time in late 1941 and from 1st flotilla, This time the ships were not on fire as i arrived, and the game dint CTD later when i approached and engaged them.

Just to be sure it wasnt a mod problem, i deactivated my mods, and loaded up the exact same list i posted a few posts back, 1 more patrol with convoy interceptions without issues. So i reactivated my latest list (the one in this post)

It does seem to me, that there is something in the convoy(s?) arround gibraltar in mid 1940 that caused my game to CTD. And that something dissapears later in the game. Because each and every time i approached those convoys game would CTD, but now i have approached many without issue.
And besides, if there is no error on those convoys, why were its ships on fire?

In any case, im happy to report that GWX is running fine again. Im now alternating between GWX and NYGM one patrol each (i have different installations and "SH3" save folders of course), and having a blast again.

3.- Restores the renown awarded for reaching and completing your patrol objectives.

4.- Restores the days in base to 31 instead of GWXs 20.

** Damage texture 1.0 is just 2 .tga files that replace the damage visuals on ships (deckgun & torpedo impacts). I dont like the default ones, that instead of holes, look like someone put out a cigarette on the ship.

*** MaGui tweaks Just replaces the map tools with larger ones, and a couple of cosmetic details to magui ui.

There was something defintely wrong with those ships. The one time i managed to get a visual on that convoy before the game CTD, two of its ships were engulfed in flames! i dint touch them, and there wasnt rough weather. So why were they on fire? beats me.

Oh well, whatever the case, im happy to be playing GWX again along with NYGM.

Im not familiar with many of those mods, so i cant tell you with 100% certainty wich one is conflicting with wich one, but from their description i can see several of those mods change equippment/uboat related files, so my best guess is that one of those mods in in conflict with another one.

Another possibility is that your main.cfg file located in you documents/SH3 folder got corrupted (it happens often).
My advice is:

Open the main.cfg file in your My Documents/SH3/data/cfg folder with notepad, check if it has this section:

[TIME COMPRESSION]
TimeStop=0
RealTime=1
LandProximity=32

CrewEfficiency=1
AirEnemyDetected=1

CharacterAnim=4

For some reason the game sometimes deletes it and it doesnt run, if its missing, just copy & paste the above section into it. If it still doesnt work, move that file to another location so that the game re-creates it, and try to start the game again.

if that doesnt work, then maybe its a mod conflict, so:

1.- Disable all your mods, untill you are left with GWX included mods only.

2.- Try to load a save game, but when you are in base, NOT a mid patrol save. Or even better, try to start the new career in the year you had those CTDs. If the game still crashes, then i would say your installation is corrupted, try doing a clean install of the game and GWX.

3.- if it works with the mods disabled, try enabling one by one and testing on each, untill you get the CTD, now you should know what mod is causing problems.

I think the problem is german U-boat compilation II. ( models by wise ) they are not finished. Alltgough there is a Turm type VIIb 2, there is no Turm VIIC 2. So if your Basic.cfg automatically changes the Turm to type 2, then CTD. You must disable wise boats just before autumn 1942 or the date in basic.cfg when Z01=2 ( Turm change ) and continue forward with your career with original VIIC in u-boat compilation mod. Wise updates his thread on continuing work and when released his VIIC model will be playable till 1945.

I also see GWX sensors. Don't know this mod. U-boat compilation mod has it's own unique sensor files. Also there is a fix for u-boat compilation Fumo. I would try your mod order as recommended by U-boat compilation mod. Enable them LAST. U-boat compilation mod, your texture choices for type IX , any/all fixes for u-boat compilation mod, and last FixAllSubsGWX . There are alot of files that can get broken with u-boat compilation mod so always put them last.

Well now its late 1942, different flotilla (7th), different grid, and the problem is back.
When i approach certain convoys, i get a CTD. And if i manage to get a glimpse at the ships, some of them are on fire just like before.

Did you run Large Address Aware? That is essential to maximizing use of your systems memory beyond the 2Gb limit in the game. Also, is your game loaded to any directory other than the default program files directory? We recommend you create a new directory on your primary drive and install and run the game from there. For example, I use C:\Games\Ubisoft\SH3 or C:\Games\Ubisoft\SH4. That plus the Large Address Aware prevents virtually all CTD's.

This recommendation is given for 64-bit systems. This is to prevent the Default Installation Path for SH3 of C:Program Files (x86)/Ubisoft,,etc. which will defeat the patched .exe from being large address aware, as the OS will run it as a 32-bit executable no matter if patched or not. Outside C:Program Files (x86) in a 64-bit OS, SH3 and GWX 3.0 as well as other Mods ( and Super-Mods ) SH3 can draw 3.7GB+ of memory. ( I have never so far been able to exceed this amount ) So the recommendation is best suited for,
1:64-bit OS.
2:8GB or more of available Memory.
3:Suitable Graphics card 1GB, or more onboard memory.
3:Large Address Aware SH3.exe.
4:Windows Compatibility Mode.
5:Run Program as Administrator.

My sh3.exe does have the memory patch (from hsie fixes), and its installed on my steam folder (i have the steam version). My steam folder is not in program files, i allways install it to just "C:\Games\Steam" to avoid issues.

I just cant figure out whats wrong. This time after more tries (im stubborn) i managed to get close to the convoy, look at the ships (i havent attacked yet):

Im not sure this is what causes the CTDs, but i think it may be related, as an indicator that something is wrong with those convoys.

Cant seem to download the manual from the site for the install procedure though.

I have the steam version. To which I will have to apply the steam fix right (SFSF-MODULE - The New Solution for "Steam" & "Starforce") This works for me and it still boots and works after applying this fix.

What do I do afterwards ?

Im now having a different "issue". its mid 1942, I have a Type7 uboat, but GWX insists in giving me patrol grids that are on the East coast of the US, The caribean arround cuba, bahamas, etc., all the way down to sudafrica... Patrol grids i would normally be assigned if i had a Type9.
I have to constantly close the game before mission, and use sh3commander to change my patrol grid to somewhere closer.

I tried changing from 1st to 2nd then to7th flotillas, but same thing happens.
I dont recall this happening on my previous career. When i had a type9 i would get those grids, but when using a t7 i would get grids that are closer.

żanyone have an idea of what might be wrong?

My question aimed at the "primary drive" - which I think is not entirely correct: I could also install to "D:" on my second HDD and still circumvent the UAC-issues that you described correctly.

The advice is to NOT install into Programs X86 or any path that is controlled by UAC. The rest is identical to what I summarized in - S3G (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=212323) -


Installing on the primary drive is a matter of convenience for me. My C: drive is solid state, and therefore faster and more reliable. Put it on any drive you want.

Anyway, perhaps I will try that LargeAdrressAware. I have 8GB RAM. The 4GB patch is already installed on my sh3.exe, perhaps it's not enough.

Good day everyone. I'm new in this group. I bought the Silent Hunter III game somewhere in the year 2003. I would like to play nowadays, but the resolution has changed from 4:3 ratio to 16:9.

The current laptop that I'm using is running on 1366 x 768. While trying to google the methods to convert the resolution, I found this forum. However, I am a little bit surprised to find out that this thread has 473 pages. While reading the last few pages of this thread, I notice that there are more than 1 types of patches for the aspect ration conversion. However,it is going to take a very long time for me to finish reading all 473 pages :-p . If you don't mind, can anyone here please summarise all available patches and recommend me which one is the best?

Hi foxfaisal and welcome to the forum.

One possible solution is to download this fix (ftp://Maik:Woelfe@diskstation.gn7vmwp32iei6ome.myfritz.n et/Public/Sharing/SH3COMMUNITYMODS/SH3%20PROGRAMS/SH3_SP2_Res_fix.zip). I am currently using it to play SH3 on a 1440x900 laptop.:ping:

Oh, I forgot. You should also unzip the dx9res10.zip file and edit the resX and resY entries in the d3d9.cfg file. Then, place all files (except the readme and the dx9res10.zip file) in your SH3 directory and run the batch file. You should be fine.

Hi everyone, I'm having issues with my game. I can't load a saved game mid patrol without a crash to desktop before loading bar completes and I follow the instructions in the GWX 3.0 manual, I don't save while submerged or save near any ship traffic nor do I upgrade anything on U-boat before first patrol except hire a few crew and change out a few torpedoes that cost no renown. I use sh3 commander with H.sie's fixes a few mods in jsgme but don't see how that would corrupt save games. If I play the whole patrol in a day and end my patrol at base it's fine, only happens while trying to load a save mid-patrol in open ocean alone on surface.

MOST TIMES I DON'T HAVE TIME TO PLAY OUT A FULL PATROL ESPECIALLY WITH THE LONGER RANGE U-BOATS SO THIS IS KINDA OF A GAME BREAKER FOR ME. sorry for caps:k_confused:

I do not see any problems in your case, but nevertheless I recommend doing a SH3 folder backup in "My documents" while minimizing the game in the tray.

Something I found, aside from the precautions you are taking, is to make sure I give the Save function plenty of time to write out the whole file. My system is pretty good, and I'm saving to a solid state "disk", but still when I watch the disk activity light on my machine I notice it goes for up to a minute past the point where I hit the Save button. I'm guessing that if you hit "Resume" or "Exit" right after making a Save file, it may not have completed writing out the whole file. Might just be superstition on my part, but I have not had a single "bad" save file since implementing a process to let the Save run its course - I get up and take a break at that point. Works for me - it may work for you. Good Hunting!

I don't know which command to edit in commands file so I don't bother, and I'm waiting for Blitzkrieg to hopefully automate Stiebeler's add on as I do use his FRONT-END Program.

You get issues when using them with integrated orders making integrated orders mod not work, and I hate editing a whole bunch of config files and command file changes. Tell me a solution instead of just saying it works no problem, because how does that help me. upload a English.command file to get the magui, and fm interiors to work compatibility wise with integrated orders and I will use those mods. I've read around and this is a common problem with integrated orders mod.

If you use MaGUI you don't need integrated orders GWX optional. MaGUI does the works.

If you don't use German Uboats compilation and only want FM Interiors you need the Aces compatibility mod. It is in the Maik's archives. Also MaGUI has his compatiblity mods. A combination of MaGUI (or Anhenerbe GUI HD), Aces compatibity mod and FM interiors works very fine with H.sie. I'm not at home now; late I will post my JSGME list so you can see the order of mods and combinations.

Yes. Only you don't ever receive an answer from BdU and it leaves you alone. Not ever the wolfpacks run at your call. But it is the same with integrated orders Magui or Anhenerbe.

Yes. Only you don't ever receive an answer from BdU and it leaves you alone. Not ever the wolfpacks run at your call. But it is the same with integrated orders Magui or Anhenerbe.

See that defeats the point, I need those messages to come through so I can read if they want me to attack alone(wolfpack not nearby) or shadow and I won't know if I can't read those messages, anyways I'm sticking to my original list with out FM interiors and magUI, their just eye candy anyways and not what I deem absolutely essential. I don't think hitman's, Anhenerbe or any gui mods can work with integrated messages coming through, am I right?

Not ever the wolfpacks run at your call - that's false I've encountered plenty of convoy battles from me reporting their speed and bearing and yes they don't come all the time (weather, u boats not in the area, messages not getting through like real life) but it does work most of the time and it's the most brilliant addition ever, how could ubisoft release a uboat game without functioning wolfpacks is crazy to me.

Once again someone blames GWX for something that is not its fault. In the stock game there is no Canal. Someone made a mod that added in the Canal. It got incorporated into GWX. It was the SH3 developers who made Denmark as wide as it is. The person who put it in had a choice: make the Canal fit the game as it was or completely redraw all the land masses in the game.

Which would you have done?

First of all game works on plane coordinates, so you well never have real trip distances, so maybe in Ecuador.

Second, it's true, is a channel, no matter the long, is a solution.

SH3 uses a Mercator projection of the world, which produces increased distance distortion the further you get from the equator. The difference between the true length of the Canal and the length found in GWX seems consistent with that original SH3 distortion.

I just did some research, and I must say I applaud the attention to detail like that. But are the ports usually this empty? I starts Aug. 1st 1939 in wilhelmshaven

Yes, high time compression and ports don't really go together too well. I guess it's a PC performance thing. Just stay at a reasonable TC like 64 or 128 until you get out to sea a bit or you can bring on a CTD. Same applies when nearing a port at the end of a patrol.

As for your low traffic problem check your enabled mods in JSGME. Have Lite Harbor Traffic enabled and be sure to have the Black Sea and Indian Ocean Campaign files disabled for your Atlantic campaign. Otherwise you won't see any ships.

Hope this helps. GWX is a great mega mod. You'll love it.

My former computer was a Windows 7 Home Premium, and simply would not run SHIII, and of course, Gray Wolves ... even in compatibility mode.


My new computer is an Acer Inspire, with Windows 10, and it is running older games like Starfleet Command 3, that my old computer would laugh at me, for. So, my question is:


Will SHIII and GWX work on my present computer?



Note that I'm currently enjoying the Wolves of Steel, but I still miss GWX.

Hello everyone,



I have run into a problem with my installation of this mega mod. I bought the Steam version of the game, and it seems to work just fine as the vanilla, un-modded, version on my computer. However, when I tried to install the GWX Gold edition, I noticed it would often freeze on loading or shortly into the mission. It works in the training missions, but if I try the single missions, it locks up. The Vanilla game does not do this and loads much faster. Any ideas on whether I installed the mod wrong or what could be causing these problems? I have tried using compatability mode setting it to Windows XP Service Pack 3 but that has not worked.

If you are running Windows 10 then compatibility mode is Windows 7.
If you are running Windows 7 you should not really need a compatibility mode.
Important that you have the 4gb patch enabled in your main game folder.
Important to run your SH3.exe and GWX exe applications as administrators.

I tried to install the 4GB Patch as found on Subsim.com but it won't recognize the Steam version of the game. What is the patch for? I will also run SH3 in Windows 7 compatability mode.

I managed to find a version of the 4GB patch here (http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php)and got it to work thanks to a Steam thread I found. I probably will have to create another Steam folder in the future though for other games like Silent Hunter 4. Thank you for your help THEBERBSTER. I will definitely look at more of your guides to solve problems in the future. That is quite the accomplishment getting all those threads organized and catalogued.

Intel Core i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHZ
8GB RAM

I do not have the 4 Gb patch, no. Would it make that much of a difference? Running GWX without the aforementioned mods works without issue.

You can beat it. I have done it at least twice. That said, there's no reason to. What they have also changed is the renown awarded for the courses. You no longer have to beat every course to start your career with 1500 renown. You only have to beat one. So do the navigation course and forget the rest.

On the other hand I find trying to survive that course to be fun. Aggravating, but fun.

After having played a career (albeit one that ended prematurely) in LSH3 I now would like to try one in GWX 3.0 (I have a clean untouched SH3 installation folder ready) however the download link in the first post of this thread gives me a 404 error, is there a working link with full installation instructions somewhere? I don't have torrent.

Alright, I have since done some more testing. It is already well established that when I use U-Boats compilation with GWX, and start a mission, it crashes.

I decided to test it on vanilla - no other mods installed. To my delight (and frustration at the same time) it seemed to work without issue. Which leaves us in a bit of a tight spot.

I am using GWX 3.0. It works fine. U-Boats compilation works fine. But they do not work together. What could possibly be causing the issue? Is there any hope for a fix? Perhaps an alternative mod? Perhaps it is a problem with GWX, and I may somehow have an incorrect version?

You can make youre own mod. Change this Font is easy.
Create new folder in JSGME-MODs-Folder with a clear identificable name. Create the needed Sub-folders called "data\Menu\Fonts\" and copy from FPHunt15.off and -tga into Fonts-folder and rename them as FPArhi24.off and -tga.
That way you dont need any changes in menu_1024_768.ini.

Would you like to create youre own Font, its not that easy.

I would like to ask you for advice with my present problem with SH3/ GWX:

I have been absent for a long time due to a stroke and several hearth operations that had a very negative development to my memory and my health in general.

So, resuming..... I am a 64 years old that loves submarine simulation and that needs help with the re-installation of GWX 3.0.

Last week I asked a young IT guy to help me with the re-installation of GWX 3.0 and it was a complete waist of time because we could not install GWX, even using the backup files that I had from my previous PC.
He told me that we had god knowledge of PC games and that it would take 1 hour max to do it........ A week later and he can not solve the problem.
I am very unhappy with this failure and I am trying to find a solution to this problem as I live in Halmstad, a small town in the west coast of Sweden.

So my question is : Do you know someone with true experience with SH3/GWX that could help me with reinstalling GWX in my PC, using an internet connection??
There are specific programs that can be used to connect one computer to another and grant access to its contents and make a software installation from distance.
I have a W7 ultimate , 64 bits,game PC for exclusive use of FSX flight simulation and submarine simulation. Th operating system is in English
I have installed SH3 V1.4 " vanilla" with no dvd modification.

Is this something that you could consider?? or can you recommend a fellow subsim that could help me??

If you have the GW3 files including installer you just run it and point it to your silent hunter 3 install

Not a lot to go wrong with that

I'm guessing you did a normal install of SH3? It can't be installed in the c:\Program Files (x86) folder. You need to uninstall it completely, and then install it in *any* other folder. Perhaps c:\SilentHunter3-V1.4\ or something similar.


You should consider doing a vanilla install, then using SH3 FE or Multicopy to copy it over into a new directory (say c:\SilentHunter3-GWX\ and then install GWX to that directory.


Best to keep a completely vanilla install and then multicopy it into new versions for, say, GWX, NYGM, WAC, etc.

Getting old does have it good points, but it certainly has its downside as well....as I am also finding out. :) I am going to expand on the good advice 3catcircus just posted.

First things first....
Start from scratch and make a fresh clean install of SH3.

I recommend you follow the following instructions for installing SH3 that is posted in the link below. It will guide you through removing starforce protection if you have an old DVD, apply the no cd patch etc....scroll down to the post titled (Re-)Installation Of SH3's basis: V1.4b. Read through the instructions, take your time and follow them carefully.

You can skip this part if you have a newer DVD that does not have starforce and is already updated to 1.4b, but I think the no cd patch may still be needed or useful.

I have my SH3 vanilla installed in c:/SH3_Stock, don't install it in the "Program files (X86) folder. I only use it to make copies. In your case once you have SH3 vanilla installed you can go two ways.

Frist, and pretty simple you can use a program called [S3F]_SH3-Front-End. It automates copying your original vanilla SH3 files to do a multi-install.
In otherwords it will copy all the SH3 files and folders to a new folder, say C:/SH3_GWX you create. It will then setup your save folder and you will have another functioning SH3 to install GWX to.
Use the GWX single file exe. just double click it, tell it where your newly created second copy of SH3 is installed and it will do the rest.
You will have three new items on your desktop if the install of GWX went well. A shortcut to start SH3 GWX, a JSGME shortcut and the GWX manual. Read the manual and it will guide you through the rest of the setup.

[S3F]_SH3-Front-End also automates the installation of H.sie's patch which you will to want to use. The patch adds alot to GWX and also use the front end program to enable the 4GB patch.

You can also do it manually (I prefer this method, but that's just me)...create a folder on your c drive name it SH3_GWX or whatever. Copy all the SH3 files in your original install folder then paste them into the new folder.
Put the program MultiSH3 in the new folder, run it and it creates the save folder for SH3. Then install GWX or whatever supermod you choose into the new folder.
You can then follow H.sie's instructions included with the download of his patch and manually install it. Just take your time and take it all one step at a time.

First Remove all not GWX mods and "GWX - Late War Sensors Snorkel Antennas"
Next read GWX manual for know when you can enable this last mod.
If campaign started still with ctd disable:
GWX - Integrated Orders
GWX - Open Hatch Mod
and check.
If caimpaign started without CTD - you enable only one of disabled and check mod as CTD source. Repeat for all.

i just recently restarted my SH3 back up. went back to the good old GWX. i found that i also have CTD as well when using the Open hatch mod. was GWX 3.0 gold updated ? because i read that the type IX has open hatches. been over 4 years since ive messed around on the forums with GWX so i dont know if thats old news or new news. Also the OLC environment, is that updated in here too or what. with the 16km sky mod i have issues but no CTDs. i can deal and work around it just wondering if this is a Refresh of the mod or is it the old stuff and im just running on Windows 10 problems.:Kaleun_Salute:

Hello fellow Kaluens

I have a strange problem with running GWX / H.sie / Stiebler add on / SH3 Commander

It all runs fine and smooth until January 1 1941.

After that date it CTDs no matter what.

The game will load , I can choose my career normally but when I hit START when the loading bar reaches the end boom CTD

If I load the previous save - before 1-1-1941 everything is fine.

Check only the first step (disable any not GWX mods). If CTD continues to occur if and only then you should start to look for an error in GWX. Baed on my knowledge, the only factor depending on the date is a change in the IXB configuration (upgrade) that you could change in the port before savegame. So there would have to be a bug in GWX. GWX 3.0 errors in this case only occur for type XXI (configuration files has bugs), not type IX. There are probably no other files depending on the date.

Just downloaded this mod and looks good. I have a few questions to make sure I am right track.

When I unzipped the total file I got the application to install GWX AND also seven bin files. What do I do with the bins files???

Also, in the JSGME box are a number of files, like"alternative flotillas". I presume I should load these???

Ignore the .bin files; they are used by the .exe to install GWX 3 Gold.

Its a unprecise message. What you must do is select the right folder (SHIII inside "steam"-"steamapps" and all that), and not the automatically marked one, which does not actually exist!

Also, I had the mod files error myself but fixed it just by directing the files to go to the proper directory on my D drive in the Steam common folder. D is where I install all of my games. It's like C for many of you out there.

Been playing SHIII for a while now but can't get it to work with GWX, I get it installed, start the game, I've tried old saves, new career, and single missions, all get to about 90% loaded then CTD. Seems like this is/was a common problem, but I haven't ran across any solutions in searches.

Do not use previous Saved games in GWX, or any other mod or mod change for that matter... The "default" Save folder is in your "My Documents" folder, and is most likely named SH3, unless you've used MultiSH3 to change it. If you want to save the Saved game info for re-use later, when you restore to the previous mod state, you copy and paste that folder elsewhere. But before you play GWX, you need to delete either the whole SH3 folder, or its contents. As an example:
"C:\Users \UserName \Documents \SH3"

Also, you should not have SH3 installed in a Program Files folder, even if you have the Steam version. You should use a folder of your own naming that is outside of the Windows "protected" structure, such as "C:\Ubisoft \SilentHunter3" or similar, so that Windows does not interfere with applying mods. :salute:

Another dumb question, can I simply cut and paste the SH folder from the usual Steam location since Steam won't let me install anywhere but the Program Files or D drive which I don't have enough space? Will it let me create another drive and install there? Guess I'll just try and see lol.

See their Support Knowledge Base article Moving a Steam Installation and Games (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129) for more information. The short story is that creating a new Steam Library folder is easiest, but if you only have a C:\ drive for computing, and the D:\ drive is the system restore and back-up, then you are left with either re-installing your entire Steam Library (which is the next easiest if it is a small library), or doing the 'move' as they describe in that article. No matter which way you go, it will take a while. When I re-did the Steam install on the old laptop, it took most of a day to do the copying, pasting and syncing that was required. Once I had things moved and was logged back into Steam though and syncing, I could walk away from the computer and let it do its thing... that process is basically going to re-install all of the games in your Library, is what it does when you move them... I ended up with "C:\Games \Steam \SteamApss \common \SilentHunter3" when I was finished. Notice also that I removed the spaces in the name "Silent Hunter 3"? I did that for a couple of the mods that require that for their installer routines. :salute:

I just created another drive "E" and installed it there, installed GWX and it seems to be working!

I've only done one patrol so far, well one after I figured out you have to turn off the Indian Ocean and Black Sea mods to have any ships in the Atlantic lol. Not totally sure how to feel about the mod yet. I like the visuals and control buttons etc. I'm not a big fan of having to ID ships, I know that's more realistic but seems tedious to me. Also, I get radio messages in German, not a fan of my sub icon on the nav map or that big circle thingy. Ship type names are also in German, but I'm watching a youtuber now play with GWX and his ships are showing up in English?

About ready to give up with GWX. It was working reasonably well, only a very few CTD's, but today I started up on a save during a mission, played 30 minutes or so, the CTD. Loaded the game again, and it CTD's after starting the mission for just a couple of minutes playing.

Are you running highter time compression than 512x because if so. You won't encounter aircraft. you must play at 512x time compression maximum if you want to meet aircraft.

It's a bug of a game actually. In Silent Hunter IV and Silent Hunter V is fixed.

I wouldn't say it's "fixed" in SH4, just that the dynamic loading of the game allows a little more room in the RAM, but high TC can still bring the game crashing down around you, as well as getting one sunk... With 512x TC, a second in real time is over eight and a half minutes in game time... Time flies when you are having fun! :salute:

After getting bored with the classic Silent Hunter 3 campaign, I decided to play the GWX missions!

The problem is that when the submarine is immersed, I no longer see the arrow on the surface of the water. I'm using the external camera and now is so difficult for me.

Also, on the map, I no longer see the ships as a line but as a point and it is difficult for me to do the calculations on the map.


Please tell me that I can solve these two problems!

A couple of things you could do. Remove all mods and copy all of the "Data / Sea / ShipName / ShipName_shp.tga" files, and copy the "Data / Misc / UMark.tga" (the arrow for your sub submerged) file to a safe location, and then put them back in their respective folders after activating GWX, or find them elsewhere (such as a mod) and copy over the locations in GWX. GWX adds some ships, so you would have to substitute a tga for those. I am not real familiar with SH3 mods, other than the likes of mega-mods such as WAC, GWX, LSH, etc., and I have not tried any of the above... but I did stay at Holiday Inn Express last week... (tired old US joke). The UMark doesn't really help you much, and if you make a mark at the "dot" when you first see it, then do it again in 3 minutes, you have your course, and can calculate the ship's speed, so not having them really isn't that much... of course, I'm somewhat used to playing like that after 12 years of it... :salute:

I think the problem with the narrow is enough... I am so happy, I did my first mission. I sunked Duke of York, even it was not enough to save Scharnhorst I am verry excited. My first mission in GWX. This supermod has a lot of U-boat love to share, from the developers of the mod to players!
Really amazing work.

BTW, today i did some A-10 Thunderbolt II missions in Lock On, great day :D!

How can I open this mission?

2) In the mission "Curacao" I have two objectives: to sink tankers and to sink tonnage. Even though I sank all 6 ships, it does not appear to me that I complete the second objective, and only 5 sunked ships appear on the map. If I open Captain's Log, I can see all the 6 ships sunked!
I should have done something else on the mission or it's a problem with the game?

Just had one of these, and I know a circle instead of a square means a sub is the lead ship.

But I also got no contact report for it, just the circle showing up that I happened to notice.

It also had no estimated speed, just time and direction.

Google turned up nothing; is this how such convoys are handled by GWX ? I.e. no contact report, no speed, etc. ?

1) Probably game bug because mission is completed. Restart game for fix. 2) Probably you sunk one ship, then your distance from shipwreck was bigger than 50km, then sh3 restored shipwreck as &quot;regular ghost ship&quot; (sh3 known bug), and then probably you sank it again and meanwhile you lost another one.

But only if you have the "normal" Campaign-files in use. If you use some "blank" Campaign-files for faster Loading Single-Missions you cant get it.

2b) Technical: Curacao (GWX).mis
Tonnage need=52000
Tonnage for these six ships=47890
So the author of this mission must had intended this.

1. I finally managed to buy a new gaming laptop (Ryzen 7 3750H + 1660 Ti + 8GB Ram + SSD 256GB). I installed Silent Hunter III + GWX and found that I have the same problem with the mission (first problem). I thought about what you said: Your problem lies elsewhere. I thought about where the problem is and I realized that I had changed the recommended video card from the Nvidia Control Panel. I switched to the integrated video card and it works! I am very happy. I hope I will not have other problem. I really love GWX!

2. I will try to find more ships :D!

1) Probably game bug because mission is completed. Restart game for fix. 2) Probably you sunk one ship, then your distance from shipwreck was bigger than 50km, then sh3 restored shipwreck as &quot;regular ghost ship&quot; (sh3 known bug), and then probably you sank it again and meanwhile you lost another one.

1 I did not finish the mission, the problem was that I had changed from the Nvidia Control Panel the recommended integrated video card with the dedicated video card. I checked on two laptops and the same problem was solved in the same way!

2 No, from what someone else told me above, I had to sink a ship, besides the 6 in the convoy!

Today I managed to finish the mission. Indeed I found somewhere on the border between ED84 and ED87 a medium tanker (8700 tons), besides the 6 oil tanks in the convoy.

Until today, I have managed to complete 10 missions in GWX.
Today I managed to do the hardest mission ever for me. I sank two battleships: Italia and Vittorio Venneto. After some research in the GWX manual I thought of a strategy and succeeded 91719 T. Kriegsmarine, you can be proud of me!

PS: I bought SH3 from Uplay and seems to be running well so far!

I am so proud, realisme 60%, but for me is enough! I like to see :X:X:X

I have the same problem but I still haven't been able to solve it. Although there may be several causes, I think you need to install 4GB patch but which is compatible with Steam edition and how to install it I have not yet been able to find out.

What windows do you use?
The latest editions of Windows are x64 versions and in order to be compatible with GWX but also to use more than 2 GB of RAM you need this patch.

I needed a few days to accept that I might not be able to play GWX, after many times trying to find a solution.
Now I play Tomb Raider 4, so I can forget this and not be angry anymore.

try to run sh3.exe in win7 compatibility and run like administrator, do not install in program files x86, close any antivirus perhaps you will have more luck :D

I run GWX on my Win10 machine in Win XP Compatibility mode and it runs just fine. Instead of the 4Gb patch, I use the Large Address Aware (LAA) utility. Does the same thing as the 4Gb patch, but with no confusion over versions, etc. I believe you can find LAA in the Subsim Download section. Good luck and good hunting! :salute:

Now I'm looking for mods for GWX and I've already found some.

1. Due to Windows 10 being so much more proprietary you should never, ever install any games on your 'C' drive, or whatever drive Win10 is installed on. I even went so far as to purchase a new disc just for my games.

2. The 4-Gig Patch (or Large Address Aware) is a must if you're loading any large mods at all. It's a good idea even if you run the game with no mods. I tried to run Iambecomelife's Merchant Fleet Mod for years and it always crashed. Simply applying the 4-Gig Patch fixed it right up.

3. I too run the Compatibility Mode set for Windows 7. It enabled me to play a couple of mods that formerly wouldn't work, and I've never had a single problem.

I should correct myself.... I can get SH3 to run, as long as I choose to be happy with 2x Anti-Aliasing.


Have read graphics tweak threads until my eyes bleed and have carefully followed the minutia of various corrections without success.

do you have also the patch 1.4b installed?
I have downloaded the game from Ubi and just followed the GWX instructions.

Ran my first two missions yesterday.

It runs perfectly. My Geforce GTX2080 TI with 11GB RAM is sleeping and my 5K widescreen monitor is a waste for this game, since the graphics are really old. :-) I wish there would be a mod to boost the resolution. Unfortunately in the options there is not an option to choose the resolution.
