My GPU, a GTX 680 that I had since 2012, finally up and died. Got some orange pixels on screen followed by a BSOD. She was a good card and lasted me a long time; just was 'er time to go. :(

So, I'm using an old GTX 560 Ti that I had laying around in storage, for use in the interim, until the RTX 2080 Ti releases in a few weeks. Then I'll get that along with a new CPU and MoBo, and everything will be gravy again. :)

Nice. I saw a VH-3 and VH-60 the other day, flying at low altitude. Also saw a UH-1Y and AH-1Z fly over my house a few months back.

I'm a hairdresser and I love my job. It's really fascinating when someone becomes beautiful due to your work. Of course, there are some troubles. For example, my blow-dryer was broken a month ago and I had to buy a new (https://mystraightener.com/babyliss-pro-blow-dryer/) one. People are rarely unhappy with their new hairstyle but sometimes it happens and I'm upset then too.
WELL I SOLVED THAT PROBLEM; I SHAVE IT EVERY TWO DAYS...SAVES ME $32 DOLLARS AT SUPERCUTS-WHICH KEEPS ME HAPPY:D I STILL HAD TO USE THE HAIR DRYER THOUGH ON MY FANCY NEW FRIDGE WHICH HAS A FEW DRAWBACKS INVOVING THE TEMPERATURE SENSORS (2) WHICH CAUSED THE WATER LINE TO THE ICE MAKER TO FREEZE UP; SO I USED THE DRYER TO THAW IT OUT AND REARRANGED THE YOGURT AWAY FROM THE SENSOR IN THE ROOF...http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/images/ranks/luckyjack15.jpgI REMEMBER THINKING WHILE USING THE WIFE'S DRYER :"WHAT A FASCINATING MODERN AGE I LIVE IN"...I HATE OVERDONE 21ST CENTURY TECHNOLOGY IT HAS A TENDANCY TO FAIL.....:timeout: :O:

"YER A BRAVER MAN THAN I GUNGA DIN!" I ONLY DO 'STORE- BOUGHT' AND TAKE NO CHANCES ON SOMEONE ELSES 'EXPERTISE'.... http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-mushroom-sickness-20170602-htmlstory.html (http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-mushroom-sickness-20170602-htmlstory.html)# Telling the difference between wild mushrooms that are safe and those that are poisonous can be difficult for many people,” said Dr. Karen Smith, public health director for the California Department of Public Health (https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/OPA/Pages/NR18-007.aspx), which released an advisory released Thursday. “Wild mushrooms should not be eaten unless they have been examined by a mushroom expert and determined to be edible.” Health officials are particularly concerned about two kinds of mushrooms that can cause extensive liver damage: The Amanita phalloides also known as the “death cap” features an umbrella like cap while the Amanita ocreata or “destroying angel,” includes a flatter beanie atop a longer, white stalk.
Health officials said a bloom of death caps last winter “resulted in 14 mushroom poisonings in (Northern) California that required hospitalization.”
Three of these cases required a liver transplant, health officials added.
:Kaleun_Sick:The fancy looking fungus thrive in cool weather and moisture and may look good to eat. But besides liver damage, eating poisonous, wild mushrooms can cause abdominal pain, cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, or death, health officials warned

Catfish
09-04-18, 01:45 AM
Nah, we only eat 2-3 species of mushrooms around where we live: Yellow boletus, bay boletus and chanterelle. There are some sub variants of the bay boletus but they are all edible.
Then there are champignons ('white mushroom'?), of course. Young death caps can be mistaken with champignons though, so we buy the latter
Cauliflower fungus is very are, but easily to identify. We usually let them be so they can reproduce.

In the Alsace region there are a lot of edible "Hexenröhrlinge", (scarletina bolete?), but we always have a local 'specialist' with us when we are there :)

Some years ago it was said that the 'Silberdistel' (carline thistle) can neutralise the death cap poison, and prevent the destruction of the liver :hmmm:
Better not try it out :03:

I just sat in the car at Tesco watching this little old guy putting a portable wheel-chair together from out the back of his car. He was struggling to get the wheels on and I thought "Should I go over and help?" Then he got them on. Then he had to put on the back, a cushion, and last of all a couple of footrests.

This all took him a long long time as he was bent double and moving very slowly. I thought how glad he was going to be when he finally got to sit in it, after all this. What a relief it was going to be!

Then I noticed two little feet appear the other side of the car as somebody else got out. It was his wife... even more bent and frail that he was. Of course she climbed into the chair and that poor little sod had to then push her around the store :wah:

Before all this I'd been unable to park where I wanted because of a big black BMW parked across FOUR parking bays. So now I was keeping an eye open to see just what kind of person would do this. I even got out of my car and sat on the hood so I could get a good view.

After a while who should show up but Kenny Rodgers! This tall guy with long snowy white hair and beard, all immaculately groomed, came striding towards the car in his bright dayglo green sneakers, carrying a pack of beers. I thought how I'd love to go over and say "You picked a fine place to leave that, Lucille" but he was pretty big

Spent a pleasant couple of hours in the sunny area at the rear of the house watching the Red Arrows flypast for this mornings Great North Run.

A few press helicopters hovering above as well but nowhere near as interesting as the Red Arrows.

The event was most noteworthy because Mo Farah won a record fifth Great North Run in a course record of 59 minutes and 26 seconds with New Zealand's Jake Robertson 31 seconds back in second.

London Marathon champion Vivian Cheruiyot from Kenya won the women's race for a second time in three years.

David Weir set a new course record to win the men's wheelchair race for the seventh time, with Martyna Snopek taking the women's race.

More importantly though were the 57,000 who ran in the event, almost all of whom were running to raise money for charitable causes :sunny:

We also found this place... a huge selection of teas to choose from which you can enjoy with your food: I had Lapsang Souchon with my teacake, Moira had Ceylon Orange Peco with her plum bread. You are also given a little pot of Tea of the Day to try... today's was Grantham Tea but it was sort of perfumed, which I don't like

Driver side rear quarter was under the intake in the shade. And, it got additional shade as the sun began settling in the west. :D

What is kind of interesting is the F4 first flight was 1958. This particular airframe in the picture was manufactured in 1966. The technology between the 1960 Buick and this Phantom is night and day.

I had that same problem ... so I sent the processor back and got a refund.

I think it was the fan I installed wrong ... so the next time I ordered a MB/Proc/fan already tested and installed and then when it got here all I had to do was install the video card/ram/power supply in my case and I was good to go.

If you can afford to try and fix it go with the MB combo proc/fan already installed. :yep:

I already have the processor I wanted, and I don't think that's the problem, as all three processors I have show the exact same symptom. The new MB is on its way (almost). I think the problem is that I tried the installation with the board installed. This time I'll put it all together before installing the new board. The big problem right now is that I couldn't afford rush shipping, so I'll likely be without a computer for another week.

Now that's frustrating.

Nope. My last computer, which was given to me, was given to someone else when I bought this one. "Cost-effective" doesn't matter. The new part is paid for. I just have to wait until they deliver it. Meanwhile I'm posting from the library or, in this case, from my apartment's office.

And at home? No research (except from the books I've bought), no gaming, no videos, but I am catching up on a lot of reading.

November 11th was veterans day on Sunday this year and then yesterday was the official observation of Veterans Day in the USA.

Does every country observe November 11th as Veterans Day at least the countries that were involved in the fighting?

In Canada November 11th has always been called Remembrance Day. Monday was a holiday.

I don't really know but those in the west do. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_Day (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_Day) ...AND IN THE EAST TOO, IT SEEMS Though not a public holiday (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_Hong_Kong) since July 1997, Remembrance Sunday is observed in Hong Kong, and is marked by a multi-faith memorial service at the Cenotaph (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cenotaph_(Hong_Kong)) in Central, Hong Kong (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central,_Hong_Kong). The service is organised by the Hong Kong ex-servicemen Association, and is attended by various Government officials and the representatives of various religious traditions such as the Anglican Church (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_Sheng_Kung_Hui), the Roman Catholic Church (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Hong_Kong), the Eastern Orthodox Church (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orthodox_Metropolitanate_of_Hong_Kong_and_Southeas t_Asia), the Buddhist community (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism_in_Hong_Kong), the Taoist community (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taoism_in_Hong_Kong), the Muslim community (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_Hong_Kong) and the Sikh community.
Although Hong Kong ceased to be part of the Commonwealth of Nations (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations) in 1997, the memorial service still resembles those in many other Commonwealth countries. The service includes the sounding of "Last Post (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Post)", two minutes of silence, the sounding of "Reveille (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rouse)", the laying of wreaths, and prayers, and ends with a recitation of the "Ode of Remembrance (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ode_of_Remembrance)". The Hong Kong Police Band (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_Police_Band) continues to perform their ceremonial duty at the service. Members of the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_Air_Cadet_Corps) (including the Ceremonial Squadron (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceremonial_Squadron)), Hong Kong Adventure Corps (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_Adventure_Corps), Hong Kong Sea Cadet Corps (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_Sea_Cadet_Corps) and scouting organisations are also in attendance.

Of course I couldn't resist the temptation to break things again. I took an old DVD drive I had (old because I bought it in 2006, just before I became homeless, but new because it sat in storage for several years and then my PC died but I left the drive in it) and installed it in the new PC. After a little fiddling it works perfectly.

Then I saw a much better graphics card on eBay for a very good price. It took quite a bit of fighting to get it in, and it also needed a separate power source. I took out the new power supply I had bought and found out that they are modular these days. Instead of a huge bundle of cables coming out of a hole in the back, it has a whole lot of plugs, and cables to go in each one. I had been thinking about adapters and splitters, but now I found out that the cable I need came with the PSU - I just didn't know what it was. now I did, and once it was plugged in everything works perfectly. I'm actually learning something.

In a couple of years, when everything is paid off, I might try my hand at building my own.

Surgery went quite well. Lens replacement for cataracts is quite routine, but stil a little on the scary side, especially when they describe how they crush the lens and suck out the remains. They give an option: get full-length lenses and have to start wearing reading glasses, or get close up lenses and wear regular glasses like I have the past fifty-eight years.

If I go the latter route nothing changes except that the new lenses won't change shape, and you never need another eye exam. The natural focal length is about six inches away, which is great for reading and building models. If instead I take the path that most people do, I won't have to wear glasses for everyday use but will need them for reading. I do have one neighbor who says his sister took the third and strangest route - have one of each. She says that she has gotten used to it, and wouldn't have it any other way. I don't think I want to do that, so I told them I wanted regular lenses, as reading glasses are quite cheap.

The operation took about two hours. Right now I can't see anything out of that eye since they used extra-strong dilation drops which haven't work off yet. I have to sleep with a metal eye patch for a few days so I can't rub my eye while I'm asleep, and I have to take three different eye drops four times a day for a week. Tomorrow morning I have a post-op checkup appointment, and they'll do the other eye on the 17th.

Went to the eye doctor again this morning. The eye that was supposed to heal in two or three days is only marginally better after two weeks. He told me that it was one of the densest cataracts he's ever seen. If the medication they have me on don't do the job in two or three months they will consider a cornea transplant. Even then he told me to be prepared for the eventuality that I may never have full use of that eye again. Meanwhile of course the operation for the left eye in indefinitely postponed.
