I guess I am a grandfather again. This morning at 5:54 am Murphy Andrew was born. He weighed 7lbs 9oz. Murphy and mom Riley are doing great. We made a quick trip to Halifax this morning and will be here when the little guy gets home tomorrow.

Everybody is pretty excited. :D

Congratulations Marcel to you and your family. :Kaleun_Applaud::Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

I got some garden tools out of the shed just now and found that one of the blades on the long-handled pruners has been snapped off. I quizzed the other two as gently as I could... my son said "The mice did it" and Moira just gave me a mystified look. I said "These couldn't have been snapped in normal use... they must've been used to lever something

But I've seen my wife at work with a chisel. You know... a chisel, one of those things you use to prise screws out if a screwdriver doesn't work

Anyway... who do you think did it?

The Lake District is a great place to visit and the Honister Pass is a 'must drive'

Only problem with the Lakes is the weather, beautiful when sunny but the exact opposite when subject to what is often torrential downpours.

/\ Does Moira know how to do canning? My mom used to make crabapple jam; my wife just made me 12 jars of marmalade from the neighbor's orange tree; and our raspberry jam from our own raspberries goes over very well with the neighbors awaiting their annual jam ration! Canning day is always a big do in our remodelled kitchen! The neighbors are generous and I've got gleaning privileges on any number of trees that would otherwise go to waste-and the donor always gets a jar or his own produce! :yep::Kaleun_Salivating:

I'm a little late to the party (I haven't been online in quite a while), but congratulations, u crank! Indeed, amongst all the craziness in the world right now, there are these little miracles.

So anyway, what did I do in real life today? Watched a couple more 90's movies with the kids, worked on my truck, mounted those new tires from 4WheelOnline I bought a few weeks ago, and even cooked lunch for today.

We call jelly Gelée (sometimes without accent), it is usually more or less transparent, while marmalade (Marmelade) is usually thick with fruits and has another consistence. So jam and marmalade are not the same in english? Or does it depend on the region?
We also "produce" some marmalade and Gelee, and exchange it or give it as presents to others. Usually we get alot more than we like.. i almost eat none of it, too sweet. I do like the slightly bitter orange marmalade by Wilkins or Koo though.
Since we sometimes get oranges directly from Sicily or Mallorca i wondered whether i could make some bitter one myself :hmmm:

Thinking of Moira i am sure she also loves fruitcakes .. :D

@ Catfish: Marmalade is what we call any 'jam' preserve made with citrus fruits. If it's made using other fruits such as strawberries blackcurrants, raspberries etc, then we call it Jam. Fruit Cheeses are made from sieved cooked fruit pulp and different from jam

Yes, it's confusing. No wonder I am nuts :)

Off to get my '05 Toyota Corolla's driverside mirror replaced. Someone 'clacked' mirrors in passing my parked ride yesterday, leaving the plastic housing intact on the car body but springing the mirror out/off from its movemotor. (It'll make a great shave mirror)...the cost, after trying futiley to replace the mirror to the motor...$316.47!!!:wah: not incl. the car dealer's install mechanic's charge.

Aktungbby
05-08-21, 12:01 AM
/\ which came to an additional $190. Additional previously unnoticed scrape damage to front bumper indicates someone probably backed into the very front left corner of me, with very minor paint damage and black plastic bumper scrapes to an already battered but reliable old patrol '05 Corolla...causing the mirror to simply pop out of its undamaged housing. That mirror is vital to an old road warrior; two days of driving to the marina to tape, & paint boat trim stripes (2 coats)was tedious and sore neck inducing: having to look over the left shoulder to do lane changes w/o the mirror! My boat captain just laughed-while appling #4 coat of teak trim varnish to the Catalina's cockpit trim- his '96 Mazda Miata mirror ran him $600!

I was just sat in the ASDA car park for over an hour waiting for Moira and Lawrence, and although I'm still jittery about having the windows wound down with other people around it was so hot that I had little choice. I'm the same way and yes they can sneak up on you ... I had just finished eating a nice lunch of a Mexican taco plate that I couldn't finish (it was so big) at a nice restaurant (paid for by my pastor by the way) and as we were leaving the restaurant with the carry out doggie bag still in my hands a street person shows up before we could get in his car and asked for change. So I just gave him the whole thing (it was heavy too) and he said, "thanks".

A year later my pastor said to his church lets take up an offering for Mr Quatro. I was more than compensated with love.

The Bible says that we should give to everyman that asks ... I've only encountered a few that ask for more than change or food.

The Bible also says that we should not forget to entertain strangers for some have entertained angels unawares.

No sooner had we walked in than a thug jumped me from behind and pounded his fist into the side of my head. He was quickly grabbed by a bunch of guys (as was I) intent on separating us and avoiding any more violence. I wouldn't have lasted long against this enormous moron so they did me a big favour

Today, after acceeding to a Facebook friends request from a bloke I only vaguely remember from my home town and who numbers quite a few historical bullies from that town on his friends list, I was gladdened to see a photo of my attacker (that he'd posted himself) lying in a hospital bed with tubes coming out of his fat body, the bastard

Silver Star Citation reads:

For gallantry in action against the enemy, 1 January 1945. Lieutenant Rigby, with his Squadron, was taxiing down the runway for a take off at an advanced airbase on the Continent when approximately fifty (50) enemy fighters attacked. Although taken completely by surprise and handicapped by full fuselage fuel tanks, he engaged and destroyed one (1) FW-190 almost before the wheels had retracted. When his gunsight ceased to function while pursuing another enemy aircraft, he closed in and opened fire at point blank range, observing the plane crash in some trees. Returning over the airbase, he assisted a fellow pilot in destroying a ME-109 and then expended the last of his ammunition in shooting down an enemy fighter which was damaged and being pursued by two P-51's. The fearless initiative, zealous fighting spirit, and exceptional bravery evinced by Lieutenant Rigby in attacking such a vastly superior force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Army Air Forces. http://www.americanairmuseum.com/sites/default/files/media/media-26700.jpeg

Only 2 flight-worthy B-17's are in all of Europe. The aircraft bears the livery on one side as #41-24485 'Memphis Belle'https://www.sallyb.org.uk/images/inflight.jpg used in the movie in 1989.https://www.sallyb.org.uk/images/memphis_bell_cast.jpg https://www.sallyb.org.uk/history.htm

Thanks, Aktung. I saw the aircraft on their way to film at Binbrook in 1989. Again they crossed our road but at the other end that time and going north; I was carrying picnic chairs around to our neighbours' house for a bbq

Amazing how these machines are still flying when you think of how many cars you've sent for scrap in that time

It's a 'time' thing with me, especially as we provide the childcare for the granddaughter most days.

I realize it's been a decade since I joined this site. Absolutely insane to me to be honest.

This site was there for me through some rough spots in my earlier life and I'm currently chasing a lifelong dream.

Thanks to you guys. It's been a ride but I wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks for the support over the years. :salute:

I just got back from a trip to a foreign land with a significantly different culture than I was used to.

Due to pissing someone off at work, I got voluntold to lead a review team at Robbins AFB, GA... in August. :o:wah:

The team we were evaluating was very nice and let us know that they tend to dress casually, especially in August. I, unfortunately, had to tell them that our policy is that we need to wear coats and ties and even socks!

Especially since I would be working with an O6 and briefing an O7, casual attire was simply not gonna happen.
For those who may be unfamiliar with this strange land, it tends to get a bit hot and humid in August. Oh well, they ain't paying me my salary just because I look good.
The operations went smoothly, but while I was sweltering in the lovely base housing, which I was required to stay in), I had some opportunities to experience some of the local culture via the Televiewer in my room.
I saw a rather long commercial on "Miracle Water". Evidently if you send this televangelist a lot of money, he will send you tap water that will, according to testimony, make your life wonderful.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl1Nnnb213Q

This was not the actual commercial I watched, but it is very close
There were actual people testifying that after drinking this Miracle Water that they were now drug free, stopped drinking, had their cancer cured, and a multitude of other benefits. Well they can't put anything on TV that is not true, so this must be good stuff.

At the end of the commercial was a personal message from Peter Popoff who sells this Miracle Water. If he is willing to put his personal endorsement on this product, you just know it is not a scam.
I mean, how can you not trust this face?

No way a guy like this would be involved in a scam. :nope:

No sooner than after I placed the first of many orders for Miracle Water, and upon serious consideration for also purchasing his Miracle Seeds, the commercial ended and the next program came on.
I was fortunate enough to be able to catch part of the North American Chuckwagon Race Championship. This was sponsored, of course, by the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association.

A confusing sport, but the announcer was acting like this was the finals of the World Cup. I wonder who won?

Strange culture down there. Natives were nice. Even the guy who "aggressively" tried to hit us up for money had some of that well known southern charm.

I wonder what other swell places they will send me. :o:o:wah::wah:

The other day I told Moira I'd like to get our boy a new game for his Nintendo 'Switch'. It would cost around £30 so I suggested she might like to go halves

She told me she owed me £15 for some shopping she'd done online, so if I paid for it myself then she wouldn't have to pay me back. I looked up at the ceiling for a bit and then said I was happy with this solution

Next day I was getting the car out and started thinking about this whole deal again... something still didn't seem right

Well, I’d just like to introduce you all to me and what I have been doing for the past few months.

As you may know, I am a Cadet in the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. I graduated from boot camp in late July and am enjoying the non-recruit life. I have some pictures of me y’all might like to see.

And this is of me right before the labor day parade. My dad wanted a picture of me for his Facebook.

And here’s the whole unit marching. I am in the middle with the two yellow chevrons on my sleeve.

Finally, some boot camp pictures coming up.

Thank you all!

And no, I am not a Corporal haha. The NSCC took some liberty with their rank designs.

I just finished up my E-3 Seaman coursework, so when I pass my PRTs and go to a training this winter I should be able to rank up a spot.

The XO was adamant that I finish my coursework so that way they could give me leadership positions, so I stepped on the pedal. So far the only real job I have is maintaining the classroom and being an "assistant" instructor. It isn't as cool as it may sound, but I'll take it.

https://www.lexico.com/explore/what-is-the-origin-of-the-word-posh

The story goes that the more well-to-do passengers on ships travelling between England and India used to have POSH written against their bookings, standing for 'Port Out, Starboard Home' (indicating the more desirable cabins, on the shady side of the ship). Unfortunately, this story did not make its appearance until the 1930s, by which time the term had already been in use for some twenty years. Added to this, the word does not appear to have been recorded in the form 'P.O.S.H.', which would be expected if it had started life as an abbreviation.

Despite exhaustive enquiries, including interviews with former travellers and inspection of shipping company documents, researchers for the 20-volume historical Oxford English Dictionary have found no supporting evidence for this explanation of the origins of posh.

Did another long - and probably last of the year - bicycle tour today, starting in foggy greyish weather and temps of 7°C, towards the region around Osnabrück, to the Rubbenbruchsee, and city centre following on. What set today's tour apart was that the bettering weather added so much beauty to it, golden light, warmth, colours. I turned into another perfect day. At the Rubbenbruchsee I sat in a Cafe, ate lunch with well prepared Wiener Schnitzel and Pommes Frites, nothing overdone, but what there was, was well done, solid, and a nice salad, I am not a salad man, so when I mention a salad positively, it really means something. :) Then a cheese cake that pleasently surprised me with having much less sweetness than cake usually has, I like that, if the sweetness is not overdone like so many usually do. I am not even about health, its just the taste of beeing way too sweet. Sat in the open under a sunscreen, and enjoyed the growing warmth. After that, completing the round around the lake, and into the city's old town.

I have it all on film, this time not in 5x but 2x stabilised acceleration. I make the trip there another movie, uncut, but only one way (going there). The material is very nice, smooth, calm, and as I said, nice colours and light and this interesting change from grey and dark to golden colours and nice October day and 17°C from midday on. Its so lovely a region. 10 hours due to the long stays and wandering around in the old town, 130 km. The film should be around 1-1.5 hours.

Another perfect day! :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

Rain, currently a steady light mist to constant drizzle, is hitting the state now; and is much needed in the yearlong drought. What is coming on Saturday is an atmospheric river of level 4-5; capable of more moisture vapor than the Mississippi has water. Capable of dumping 3' of snow in the Sierras, it will be a welcome relief to the nasty fires still burning but could also cause serious erosion of bare/scorched areas. Never pure joy with Mother Nature!:wah: Fingers crossed in trepidation as the Bay Area and Northern California are directly in the path.

I bought a telescope a while back. Not a big expensive one, but it does magnify up to 120x. Unfortunately, it had a defect. If I tried to look at a planet, it looked like a comet - with a large, hazy tail about six times the diameter of the body, extending to the lower left. This made it completely useless for looking at anything other than the Moon or terrestrial objects.

Well, tonight I decided to try and fix it - even though I know very little about how telescopes are assembled. I took off the piece on the front which I can only describe as a sort of shade for the objective lens. That revealed a threaded ring which held the objective lens in place. After a brief inspection, I noticed that it was cross-threaded.

I carefully unscrewed it and re-seated it correctly. I thought to myself "If this was the only thing wrong, I'll be happy ... but mad at the same time." You see, I've gone months without using it because of this defect, and if that's all I had to do to fix it, then I've missed a lot of good observing for no good reason.

Anyway, it turns out that the cross-threaded ring was the only problem. I aligned the telescope with Jupiter, adjusted the focus and was thrilled to see Io, Ganymede and Callisto and I could even just barely make out one of the bands of gasses which make up old Jove's atmosphere! I turned the scope to Saturn and I could clearly see the rings! And the Moon looked absolutely amazing! I was elated!

I have an adapter which allows me to clamp my phone to the eyepiece so that I can take pictures and record video. However, my new phone doesn't quite fit. I'll have to find a way to make it work or use my old phone to take pics/video. Either way, if I get some good images or video I will post them here if anyone is interested. Attached below is an image of the Moon I shot before I fixed the defect. Hopefully future images will be even better.

RAIN! The atmospheric river is doing it all along the western seaboard up to Oregon! Winds in the hills are at 30+ mph and rain is in inches and expected all week long. The Napa river had been empty mud above Napa City due in part to world famous grape vineyards pumping out the underground aquifers; lowering the water-table which is not good for the fish. This will put out the ongoing California & Oregon fires which have been burning for months in rough terrain; and replenish our greatly reduced reservoirs...but probably not get us out of the serious drought we're in...:hmmm: The Sierras will have great ski conditions after this as snow will be 2+ feet! EDIT: Just called in a 911 fire-showering electric shower from the four insulators on the crosstree! The homeowner, two doors away dwelling there happens to be my cardiac nurse on my recent treadmill test last Thursday!! So, I went out in the tempest to warn her.

Still drying out from the atmospheric river that zeroed in on California on Sunday. Several roads/highways are washed out; but the fire season is over!:yeah: It's the earliest fire season ending in years! Recorded rainfall amounts in a day were 5.5 in. at San Francisco up to 11 inches in nearby counties. The Napa River went from 2.6 ft to more than 21 feet in 14 hours. The flood gates and a low tide in SF Bay prevented any serious flooding. Our drought stricken local reservoirs went from 58% to 66%...all good! The Napa river is flowing from all the reborn bone-dry creeks feeding into it again. Some more rain is expected all week, but the mother load has passed into Nevada and Arizona according to my tablet's weather radar app. Technically we're still in a drought though.

The 'boss' spotted me on the ladder; and handed up new traditional 2" colored bulbs as needed; some on my venerable 32 year-old 4-strand have died. I don't go for the modern glitzy white light crap. The new deep gutters totally blocking the wooden eaveends necessitated some hasty picture brass wall-hooks being tapped in around corner downspouts to hold the wire. Mission acomplished; getting up and down ladders at 70 is not a percentage maneuver for an old guy!

OK, this will wind up sounding a bit odd.. :D

As some of you know, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis back in 2009-2010. Its why I get all of my health care done at the VA. I had really good luck with injecting Interferon (after I built up a tolerance to it) to the point where some of the old damaged areas "healed" back close to normal and my MRI scans showed either no signs or very minimal signs of MS progression.

Then the pandemic hit and I had to put the Neurology appointments on the back burner during the lock downs. I was finally able to set up a Neurology appt. a couple of weeks ago where I had wanted to talk with my Dr. about being on the same medicine vs. switching to one of the other MS meds (doing a shot of Interferon every other day for 13 years starts to take its toll).

My Dr. came back with a curve ball: "Be honest, when was the last time your MS flared up?" I had to think about that, it was something like four years after I started the shots. I ask why and he says "Its a little early with you, but I think we can take you off your meds. What do you think?"

:o
:hmmm:
:D
:yeah:

So, we set up an MRI scan appt. which happened yesterday and I got the call this morning: no signs of activity. I'm just waiting now for my Neuro to call back where we can map out a plan to get me off these meds.

This isn't a decision I'm taking lightly. As far as I know, I'm not cured. That never really happens. What does happen with some MS patients is that the disease goes dormant or "burns itself out" once the patient gets into their mid-60's. I just turned 60 last summer so that outcome wasn't even on my RADAR yet.

It is NOW. :D

To be clear, this ISN'T one of those "cruel VA stories" where they kick me into a snow drift and cut off my meds. I doubt I'll be getting off the good 'ole disability pension any time soon (my disability % is pretty high). Still, I've been able to keep my basic mobility intact and adapt to the stuff that changed.

Anyway, if any of you noticed me walking three inches above the ground in the last two weeks, that was why.

It is NOW. :DIn the relapsing/remitting form of MS the flares can happen every few years (or more often), while the inflammation is dormant in between. As you said this alone is not a sign that it will not happen again, but this 'burnin itself out' sure is good news.
Apart from Interferon there are developments involving some Ocrelizumab/Ocrevus every 6 months. Advised are also vitamine D3 and especially propione acid against the flaring-up of MS, you get propione acid in pill form. Maybe ask your doctor. Apart from the Ocrelizumab stuff all else is relatively cheap.
Anyway, if any of you noticed me walking three inches above the ground in the last two weeks, that was why.

Trust me, you're preaching to the choir. I know all about this disease. :har:
With the other meds, I'm thinking NO meds is a better alternative as long as I can get away with it.
I've heard my share of stories from really invasive surgery (debunked) to third world miracle cures that only require a visa and most of your savings. :yep:
That's where MS is dangerous. The reality is that no one knows what really triggers it so its easy to dream up miracle cures for the desperate. Let's agree to just not go there. :03:

With D3, I did a "mega dose" trial back in 2011 to get my levels back to a normal range. I still take D3 supplements to keep my levels normal and I don't plan to change that.

Well, there was a rematch of the 2022 Olympic Women's hockey gold medal match-up Yesterday. It was again between the Women's Canadian and American teams. I expected a hard fought game and wasn't surprised that it was

It took place in Pittsburgh at the PPG sports arena. Pittsburgh Penguin's Mike Matheson's wife, Emily Pfalzer Matheson coached the Women's American team. This explains why the game was held in Pittsburgh. I might have made the trip to see the game if I had known sooner.

The Women's American team lost in overtime to Canada, once again. :wah:

The American team played much better in this rematch but still lost 4-3. How much more can an American hockey fan take ? :wah:

I may have a solution. :03: I'm putting together a petition. I think the U.S should invade Canada and take all of their current and future hockey players and hypnotize them into believing they are Americans.

All jokes aside, the Hockey work ethics and traditions in Canada are hard to beat. :yep:

Saw the Neuro again yesterday. My suspicion that he got cold feet turned out to be right. :shifty: He thinks I'm just too young (by several years) to quit the MS meds entirely. I've already switched from one type of Interferon to a (basically the same) "off label" version.
What's new is that I'll be switching again to one of the pills (I'm mis-spelling it on purpose to avoid the bots) called "Tech Federra" sometime next month after I use up all of my needles.

I'm already planning a steak dinner for the night of my last needle :yeah: then I take a two week "vacation" and clean out before I start the pills.

Once that starts, I can finally go on a diet and drop 10-15 lbs since I won't need the "shot acreage" any more (Interferon and muscle tissue is NOT a happy combination). :yeah:

So, it isn't the best news but I'm still smiling. I figure another 4-5 years of a pill a day is better than having nothing change.

I was going to say that's less than we're paying, but let's see ...

£1350 ≈ $1653
$1653 ÷ 40 ft. ≈ $41/ft. (≈ £33/ft.)

Ouch.

We're getting ~181 ft. of fence replaced after a strong wind blew it down. One of my neighbors is doing the job for $4900 (≈ £4,003).

$4900 ÷ 181 ft. ≈ $27/ft. (≈ £22/ft.)

I guess we're getting a good deal. But he's giving us a discount because we're neighbors. I wonder what the price difference for lumber is between the U.S. and U.K.

Great movies. Robert Mitchum was always a great actor in all the reruns I have seen. Robert had such a commanding presence. I also liked him as Victor " Pug " Henry in the mini-series, " Winds of war " based on a book by Herman wouk.

"Winds of war" is a great book.. but it stops in the middle of the war, and i have not yet read "War and remembrance", which seems to be the sequel(?).

Yesterday and today repaired the blinking airbag lamp or better the cause for it, then moved stones from one place in the garden to another. Sysiphos was a joke in comparison :wah:

I have not seen War and remembrance so I really have no idea if that's the sequel but it would seem to be. Winds of War went through I believe 7 installments and it indeed did end with WW2's conclusion. The clip I included with my previous post is the end of WW2 for Victor " Pug " Henry.

Sipping having my morning cuppa-Joe and reading the paper. I will joining my daughter and her fiànce later for a combined Father's Day and my wife's birthday luncheon. Still recuperating from a day of slaving over a hot stove making 37 jars of apricot jam (9 pints)from the neighbor's tree! I just got a message there will be no Wall Street Journal on Monday, as today is Juneteenth, now an official Federal holiday, honoring June 19, 1865 when Galveston, Texas, westernmost state of the Confederacy, was finally put into compliance with Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. As a retiree myself, I hope it's a paid holiday for those workers slaving away to pay into my Social Security stipend... :Kaleun_Salute:

Gottcha beat! SWMBO and I are finally 'goin solar' with a backup battery. Unsure of the total price less the 10K+- Federal tax credit, 13 solar panels and the new electric fuse panel (mine is original since the house was built in 1967) It will also need to be moved at least a meter away from the gas-meter per current code rules. :k_confused: and is a potential fire hazard...so I figure 20-30K with loan. The house roof just got droned/inspected this AM to make sure the roof is up to to snuff to hold the panels. It was just replaced along with baths and kitchen; so that shouldn't be an issue. The plan is to lower the ever increasing bill from PG&E since the home system then 'sells' electricity into the grid to offset the bill. My boat captain/neighbor has a Tesla system,https://pv-magazine-usa.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2018/04/powerwall-e1523453786557.jpg and except for an inverter failure early on, he is pleased with the result & bill savings; and can monitor the system and grid interaction with his phone app...

This solar electric stuff sounds phantastic, and it is. Fantasy. There is no battery that can store as much as one needs, let alone how long it will be able to work in its life cycle. Four years, six if you're lucky?

You can use solar cells to lower the base consumption and sell it to the grid, but fuelling an electric oven? Run an air condition with it? You need the heater when the sun does not shine. Solar cells also do not work forever, chrystalline ones are "ok", amorph ones age in five years to less than 30 percent of their original output.

We have calculated this to and fro, thing is it only will be worth the investion after 20-30 years – most probably not even then due to battery ageing, solar cell replacement and ageing electronics.
Invest 30,000 Euros to pay 100 Euros less/month does not look as if i would ever see some return. Maybe when i'll be 110 years old, but even then

So financially it does not make much sense now. Maybe later with better technology.
What about ecological gain? Even here the building of solar cells, electronics, batteries, transport, installation, maintenance, disposal/recycling; the overall cumulative energy balance is bad, much worse than using what we have.
Does not have much impact on world climate just because your exhaust is located at the horizon.

It fuels the economy of cours. And so cool to have a smartphone gadget that gives one the illusion of control :O:

I'll never see it but by sole heir will. :D The battery, approx 14K extra, is guaranteed 10 years and is necessary since the house experiences numerous power failures. It should last 25 years depending on total drainages. These are often due to convictied criminal corporation PG&E shutting down power lines in high winds to prevent further horrific fires. I just want sufficient power to run the AC, fridge and computer during the oft-daylong outages. That will constitute sufficient "off the gridness" for lil' ol me?:arrgh!: We had considered the German Sonnen or the worthy Tesla of my neighbor-captain but are going with the 14K Enphase-Encharge Ensemble 10 https://www.ecodirect.com/v/vspfiles/photos/Enphase-Ensemble-Kit-2T.jpg?v-cache=1658147776all-in-one AC-coupled storage system is reliable, smart, simple, and safe. @Aktungbby
we are still thinking about what to do, but next thing is the roof and that will be expensive enough. Makes no sense to install anything on a bad roof .. maybe later and with improved technology.

Still, a battery with 4,5 kw? How long is this supposed to last when fully loaded, if you add all the consuming devices? :hmmm:
We thought about an emergency generator to be driven with fuel or LPG. It would be connected to the electric fuse panel, but with a switch either using electricity from the net, or from the generator.
They also come with ATS but then current not bei9ng used is being fed to the net, and for this it would be mandatory to have a special synchronizer to adapt to the net's phases.
It is able to generate 8000 Watts continuously and setting to lowest rpm when there is no major consumer. One 20l tank is good for up to 30 hours, so some jerry cans as backup, or propane gas.

A cat wants to be outdoors, like a dog, maybe even more. We have a cat flap so he (not "it" :03:) can go in or out anytime he wants.
Our current company (called but not listening to the name of) "Max" catches a mouse now and then, but we have trained him to "please eat them outside".
The last tom-cat we had brought a caught mouse inside now and then. I only know of one rat – "Igor" came in completely deranged, ate, drank, and laid down for two days. I found a very big 'monster rat' in the garden, dead. We had heard loud screeching at night, i went out but did not see anything.
Must have been a real fight, the rat (if it was one) was almost as big as Igor; it had very large incisors on the front of its jaw, with a body length of >= 45 cm.
We also see martens now and then, but i take it cats and those evade each other for the better.
If he gets sick we keep him in the house, but i have never seen one cat (male or female) who preferred to stay inside. Especially a tom-cat's 'district' is much larger than even the biggest house can provide.

Meanwhile, I'm back to Dentist shopping. :Kaleun_Mad:

I was over-due for a check up and I had a feeling my last Dentist retired (at least I hope so). Watch how this gets hopelessly complicated really fast...

Last week I started having some issues with a wisdom tooth that started barking. Basically, its time to evict this :Kaleun_Mad: thing. So, I call a local dentist's office. Then I call another and get an appointment set up for this week. Oh, did I mention I'm in :Kaleun_Mad: pain? No one in this town pulls teeth anymore. At least I'll get a cleaning and an exam of the :Kaleun_Mad: wisdom tooth. What should happen is the new office should refer me to an Oral Surgeon, somewhere..

But wait, there's more. Most of you know I used to be an ET on a couple of US subs. As it turns out, most ETs have security clearances. Some of us had really spooky sounding clearances that have been in the news lately. For me, my old clearance fully times out in 2092.

Big deal, right? Well, get ready, here comes the punch line. :yeah:
Back when I de-briefed, it was mentioned that I just can't get knocked out with Laughing Gas or Sedation unless someone with an equal or higher clearance is present while I'm all goofed up.

:k_confused:

So, what I'm going to try to do is get the tooth pulled at the VA. Except, there are very tight regulations at the VA involving Dentistry. For the most part, you had to be either wounded in combat or been held as a POW to qualify for Dental service. Thank you, ADA.. There's nothing like having a really strong lobbying organization.

So, unless one of you wants to volunteer to snack me upside the head with a baseball bat, I'll probably be dealing with this :Kaleun_Mad: until next Spring.

Sorry to hear about that, mate - btw what's an 'ET' if not an extra-terrestrial?

ET is Navy Jargon and an abbreviation for Electronics Technician. Working on communication, navigation, etc.... equipment. They would carry a security clearance with everything they know. The one with perhaps an even higher security clearance in the enlisted ranks is a Yeoman to a Capt. or Admiral or anyone of flag rang.

These people see and read everything that goes through the office. A Yeoman can easily climb up the " haus Pipe " to be a Chief Petty officer or beyond. Most everyone on Subs have a clearance in one way or another, especially the sonar gang. Those people ( submariners ) basically operated on a war footing at all times. :yep:

I find the Dentist's office, go in for my appointment, fill out a #### load of forms (including my medical history) have some chit chat, get a new X Ray done, meet the Dentist for some more chit chat, he looks at the wisdom tooth and says, "I don't see any problem with just yanking it with Novocain BUT I'm concerned about your blood pressure med and I want to call someone about when you stopped the Interferon Rx". :/\\!!

Now, if I had more sleep this past week I could have just said "See this spot where there used to be a tooth? I was taking all of those meds when my last Dentist yanked it at 6 PM on a Friday". Instead, we all shake hands again and go our separate ways. I pay a three figure bill :o and go home so the :Kaleun_Mad: wisdom tooth can start barking again. :/\\!!

So, the wisdom tooth is still there. :nope: They're going to "call me later". Maybe we can all get together for a game of Rummy or they can watch me twitch around on the floor for a while.

Its a shame this forum doesn't tolerate swearing. There's one word I want to post in REALLY big letters right now. :yep:

Oh, not so good news about my old Dentist. No one knows for sure but the scuttlebutt is that he's had some COVID related problems. Which stinks, he's a cantankerous old guy but he was MY cantankerous old guy.

And, the last update on this chapter. :D

The pain got really bad last night and stayed that way.
Finally called the Dr's. "emergency" number early this morning and said I would be waiting for him in front of the building when he got to work.

He was cool and warned me that the Novocain shot was going to hurt like a mudda because he finally figured out the tooth was infected. He wasn't kidding. It sounded like I was 8 months late on a payment but things finally got numb. :yeah:

Got the bleeping thing extracted at about 9 AM. Pretty simple and it looked goofier than I thought it would. Remember Devil's Tower in Close Encounters?
All sides and no roots. Either way, its gone. :D

I'm taking a long weekend off. Right now it feels like I got run over by a train but that's a good thing. The pain from the extraction was brief but expected. I was over the worst part by noon. Now, I just need to get the rest of that infection out of my system and make sure the gum heals correctly.

Later. :Kaleun_Cheers:

...now you'll remember to brush and floss regularly!:D I'm fortunate; I got my wisdom teeth out sometime around age thirty they were
coming in out-of-alignment and ruining the teenage braces-straightening for which the orthodontist had removed the four bicuspids behind the incisors(fangs alot doc)... thus, at age 71: lower maintenance all round!:yeah:

What a lot of unnecessary pain to go through and for so long!! :timeout:
Looks like the light at the end of the tunnel is approaching, I sure hope it's all over soon, dare I say . . . what about the other wisdom tooth?

Cheers.

In all honesty, I haven't had a cavity in something like 15 years? :yep:
Same deal with the braces gig, I still have my fangs but the two teeth outside of them got yanked. To me, it still seems like it was a waste.

The Navy yanked my lower wisdom teeth mainly because I got my orders changed to the Barbel in Japan. That was where I probably got into the most trouble, Barbel was all about really serious fresh water restrictions and we'd wait until the galley served soup to brush our teeth. :arrgh!:

The chomper that got yanked today was always on the back burner. My Dentists always told me they'd deal with it when the time was right. :O:

The last wisdom tooth has always acted like it was in the witness protection program and its always kept a low profile. We checked it in the last set of X Rays and it hasn't done much of anything. The problem with digging it out is that it would require some serious oral surgery because its buried deep.

Bracing for a bad couple of days. Hurricane Fiona with Category 1 winds and torrential rain is expected to make land fall here early Saturday morning. Huge amounts of rain are expected. "Rainfall rates in excess of 25 mm per hour are possible beginning tonight and will continue into Saturday ..". Wind could gust up to 140 or 150 km/h. Large storm surge is expected in coastal areas.

Wish I had a submarine. :D

Well It's Saturday so why shouldn't she get some snacks, like I do sometimes in the weekend.

Thanks guys. No power or internet. On my phone. It’s a disaster for sure but we are all safe. My son in law got me a generator so we have the basics.

A generator is a very good thing to have + fuel to run it.

Secondly a kerosene stove + kerosene to heat up the room you are in is also a good investment.

Things can be replaced-Human can't so stay safe you know

The West coast of Florida is about to be hit with Hurricane Ian. Hurricane Ian is now a category three storm and could be a category 4 by the time it makes landfall in Florida tomorrow. Storm surge could be as high as 10 feet.

I have a number of friends in Florida so I worry about their safety.

Reading the WSJ and imbibing my cuppa joe...and the front page is enjoyable for a change-side by side headlines: "China Reins In Belt and Road" lending vs "Russian Enlistment Offices Attacked as Protests Widen"...as 3rd-world nations vote with 'debt-trap diplomacy' nonpayment; and Russian callup reservists vote with their feet...and guns at recruiting stations...:hmmm: ie: all is not so harmonious in the neo-communist superpower states??!:arrgh!:

One week after Hurricane Fiona blasted our little island we have had our power and internet restored. But almost half the Province is still in the dark. The devastation is stunning.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/pei-hurricane-fiona-damage-photos-1.6593377

We were very fortunate. No damage to our house and there were no deaths or injuries in the Province. I have a great son-in-law who found us a 5500 watt generator so we had lights and hot water. We spent most of the daytime helping neighbors clean up their yards. My wife made hot meals for neighbors that didn't have a generator. She is a wonder.

The impact of this will last for years. I will now have a deeper sympathy for others who are hit by these things.

I'm glad you and your neighbors came out of the Hurricane " relatively unscathed" Marcel. You have a great family there. I hope everyone else there is safe and able to pick up their lives and livelihood in short order. It's so great you and your wife were able to help the neighbors but hardly a surprise you would do that. :Kaleun_Salute:
