WAR ON PIGEON'S PART TWO

For a while I was winning but these thugs have massed against me with their bloody hooting so I have upped the anti. Downloaded sounds of birds of prey and burnt them on to a CD. Stuck my CD player out the window volume up full and gave those pigeons a dam good scare.

So far today played it twice and the score card is..

STEED 2 PIGEONS 0

They have all flown away and for the last few hours it has been bliss.

THE WASHER OUT IN THE GARAGE-1.5 FEET LOWER THAN THE HOUSE FLOOR, AND THE DISHWASHER, WHEN IN SIMULTANEOUS OPERATION, HAVE OCCASIONED BACK FLOWS FROM THE WASHING MACHINE OUT-FLOW STANDPIPE WHICH MUCKS UP THE GARAGE FLOOR. MAJOR PAIN IN THE ASS! GENERALLY I'VE HAD TO SNAKE OUT THE STANDPIPE AND ALSO THE MAIN 4" SEWER LINE TO THE STREET WHICH I HAD REPLACED A DECADE AGO....TRENCH WARFARE 101 AS IT IS 6' DEEP IN THE FRONT LAWN AND NECESSITATED A 30 FOOT LONG EXCAVATION. THE ORIGINAL 50 YEAR LINE WAS MADE WITH ASBESTOS AND THUS REQUIRED SPECIAL DISPOSAL IN ACCORDANCE WITH CURRENT LAWS. THE 'LORD OF THE MANOR' IS OFT 'LORD OF THE MANURE'! :O: PS: EARTHQUAKES ARE NOT CONDUCIVE TO GOOD PLUMBING...OR 'PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP' AS THE HOUSE'S FOUNDATION SETTLES AND THE YARDS SPRINKLER LINES ARE SHIFTED.

I spent some quality time with my boy last night as he sat excitedly watching me at my 'Prisoner of War' pc game. He's autistic, with an amazing memory, so after he got finished helping me avoid capture (he hammers this game on his Playstation) I got to wondering whether autistic folks wouldn't have made brilliant escapers... or at least planners... with their ability to memorise sentries' movements, building or compound layouts etc.

Thank you for sharing your trials and growing concerns with your son ... :yep:

Do you consider your son handicap or does that not apply to autism?

The seed thought I have from your night with your son is that perhaps more games could be designed for handicap people to play to increase the mental challenges to growth in a mature world that mocks autistic children.

Games that are just for handicap people don't even seem to be available. Perhaps there is not enough interest, but I would love to have a side kick for future tank, plane or sub sim games.

Sports games for example should have an option for handicaps to the opposite party if say they are a female lol

Eichhörnchen
06-12-18, 04:15 AM
Yes we do indeed consider him to be handicapped, Mr Q... for instance if we were to abandon him in town or somewhere then we couldn't be sure we'd ever see him again.

But of course autism isn't the same as a primary handicap... like being totally blind or having lost both legs... for folks like that I guess their disabilities and the associated difficulties are pretty much clearly defined. With autistic people each and every one of them is different, and there are as many different types of autism as there are people with it... so it's still more a question of employing games which might challenge and improve that person's individual weaknesses rather than try to develop something which they can all find useful, although that's certainly made me think.

We do, however, believe that the hand/eye co-ordination needed for gaming is a good reason to encourage it; when I saw my young nephew with his Nintendo DS for the first time I thought to myself "My boy will never be able to do that". We eventually got him one of his own and he was like a duck to water... and I reckon linear games must help his situational awareness, although this is just me guessing.

I won't bang on about it any more, but your question is a very interesting one and has certainly made me think... I'll maybe come back with more thoughts later. Thank you, Mr Q :salute:

The games tailored to those that are Autistic, handicapped or developmentally delayed seems to be a great idea. :) I'm not sure how much of a market there is for games like this but it seems to be a much better use of time instead of games where you graphically kill each other.

I know basically nothing about Autism but as Eichhörnchen said, it can vary greatly from one person to another. We had dinner out one night and I saw an older man with his Autistic grand daughter. The young girl, maybe 5, was sitting in a high chair, working an I pad with ease. I spoke with the grandfather later and commented that his grand daughter was working the I pad much better than I do. :yep: He laughed and said the same thing. The young girl in my opinion, was functioning at a very high intellectual level. I don't think those with Autism are functioning at a diminished intellectual capacity at all. It's more about impulse control and other things. He was obviously proud of his grand daughter and obviously has high hopes for her.

Maybe technology like computers can help those afflicted with Autism and the like. My fears would be that computers if their use is unregulated, might push these people further into their own world.

I said it before, Eichhörnchen. Lawrence is lucky to have you and Moira as his parents. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

Thanks for those kind words too, buddy.

Things are also complicated further by the fact that there is a distinct group of autistic people who are known as 'High-Functioning Aspergers-Syndrome' (I believe that Alan Turing was one) and they often refer to themselves as "Aspies". These are the guys who seem super-clever to the rest of us 'Neurotypicals' (as they sometimes call us). So your description of the little girl was spot-on, as she may have been one of this group... but they do also have their own individual ways.

Our boy is just plain autistic, so he'll be unlikely to even understand the benefit of making the effort to fit in with the normal world and perform a useful function (work). And although Moira just now offered to give him £1.00 to do a bit of cutlery-drying, he doesn't really understand money or its part in society (this comes from having a bum for a father). Aspergers people seem usually to be keen to impress and do well, whereas Lawrence needs continual prompting to stay on task if it's something other than playing Sonic The Hedgehog.

Just a small insight this, but I'd hasten to add that he quickly gets under peoples skin because he's always happy and often very funny.

Cheers guys. The problem is an odema (hope I spelled that correctly) situated at the back of the left eye and positioned dead centre. A position that makes invasive treatment difficult.

There is a rearch study currently being undertaken by Belfast University for such cases and instead of entering the eye physically one of two lasers is being used (argon or Sub threshold-you are not told which one is actually used).

So, given the opportunity I became study case number 18 out of a total of 25 so we'll see (no pun intended) where this leads.

SOUNDS LIKE DIABETIC MACULAR EDEMA??!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7fqcDMcHLo Photocoagulation: thermal effect. Lesions are caused by an increase in tissue temperature, causing vaporization of liquids within and outside tissues and denaturalizing proteins, resulting in cellular death (apoptosis). Lasers of this kind are called photocoagulators, some of which are of argon (514.4 green and 488 blue-green nanometers) and krypton (647.1 red nanometers), which require a water refrigeration system. Currently, the most commonly used are double-diode (532 nanometers) and double-YAG (532 nanometers), which do not require cooling systems. 2) Disruption: electromechanical effect. These lasers use a burst of optical pulses of high power and short duration, achieving ionization of the tissue, forming plasma that expands at high temperature, which causes an acoustic shock wave that breaks the target tissue. Lasers of this type are called photodisruptors and Neodimio YAG (Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet) operated with a longitudinal wave of 1064 nanometers is the one most commonly used. Its usefulness is in carrying out a capsulotomy after opacification following cataract surgery, and peripheral iridotomy to prevent risks of acute angle-closure glaucoma.
3) Photochemical, in which the lasers are used to alter the chemical composition of the target tissue, producing a molecular alteration of the cells subjected to a prior photosensitization. This type of treatment is called photodynamic therapy. In this type of laser, the treatment is carried out by photosensitization of the tissues, using photosensitizing agents like verteporfin (with a laser light absorption peak of 689 nm), which binds to the lipoproteins LDL-cholesterol. The activation is done by a non-thermal diode laser of 689 nm for 83 seconds, giving a dose of 50 jules/cm2 luminous light intensity of 600mW/cm3. Once activated, verteporfin radicals release oxygen, a process that alters the membranes of endothelial cells of the ocular blood vessels. This produces a platelet aggregation and forms a thrombus, resulting in an occlusion of the vessels. This technique is currently used in the treatment of exudative AMD (age related degeneration).
4) Photodecomposition. This is the result of the interaction of the laser with the tissues, which emits ultraviolet light at the target tissue. In this case, the laser photons are absorbed at the molecular level, resulting in fragmentation of the molecules. They emit ultraviolet radiation of 193 nanometers in pulses of 10 nanoseconds and the emitted radiation destroys molecular unions forming a volatile phenomenon called photodecomposition. The Excimer lasers (Argon - Fluoride) used in refractive surgery sculpt the corneal stroma using the photoablation.
Of the lasers described above, the treatment of DR and the DME appearing there is carried out with photocoagulator lasers. The first of their type used were argon and krypton, which were very cumbersome owing to the need for water cooling facilities. These have been replaced by the so-called solid lasers, which use diode or YAG, doubled to a produced radiation of 532 nanometers.
One type of laser also used in DME is the diode of 810 nanometers and acts in micropulses of 0.1 ms duration.:k_confused:

Weather spokes persons are boasting we are going to thrash the summer of 1976 with a scorcher 2018. They are saying its going to remain high though July August and September! I have already noticed tempers are on the rise due to lack of sleep. And the water companies have already started hose pipe bans, next up a shortage of water.

It's been hot to a scorcher down here in southern UK and no sign of a let up.

Sorry to hear of your troubles Mate. That's a tough break. Many of us have been through similar problems. In 2009 I lost a very good job for the same reason. We had relocated for me to take this job and things were good for four years. Then because of the economic downturn in the USA suddenly we were done. Been down that road twice, first time the union screwed us out of more money with their lies about redundancy payout. The second the company lost its contract and they closed that part of it down.

The only thing I can say to you is they will make you jump though hoops if you sign on. Back in 2015 when i was last out of work the job centre made me suffer from very bad depression which i'm still not fully over and probably will never be.

So I know a bit what you are facing, being 63 years old is the worst case for you and all i can say is start the cut backs now big time. If you do sign on its not going to be nice under the new and tougher system. I wish you all the luck and hopefully something will come along.

I was just outside watching a Spitfire aerobatting over the fields in this blazing July weather. A guy stopped his car up the road when he saw me and got out for a look. "That's a birdie!" he called out... "A sound from my childhood". "Nothing like it" I replied. "You get four in a Lanc", he said, then got back in his car and went. These old planes engender such good feeling between people now... a strange thing when you consider what they were built for

Catfish
07-16-18, 04:19 AM
Aviation, planes and seeing them fly 'live' at those special days are always a magnet for people, unconnected from politics or what harm you can do with planes.

The enthusiasm for flight, beginning in France and then spreading fast has though never been as big as in the beginning of flight, from before WW1 well into the 1930ies.
There is a real good book about the pioneer spirit "A Passion for Wings: Aviation and the Western Imagination, 1908-1918" (e.g. here: https://www.amazon.com/Passion-Wings-Aviation-Imagination-1908-1918/dp/0300068875). It is less technical stuff but the impact that aviation and this spirit had on the people, and which i still feel.

There are not much (if any) german warbirds of this time left in Germany, so we almost never see them flying 'just so'. They have been either destroyed, delivered for reparations, or just scrapped later. Very few are being restored, mostly abroad, and mostly the 109, and the FW 190. The last restored Heinkel 111 crashed a few years ago in the USA or so i read. I admit i find this special whine of the DB engine with its howling supercharger is awesome.. but maintaining this kind of engines costs a fortune :).

Not long back from shopping at ASDA with the wife during which I observed a guy about 30 ish years old picking up pre-packed sirloin steaks and stuffing them into a sports holdal.

I thought to myself "You twunt, I'm planning on having one of them for supper tonight provided you leave some but I'm having to pay for mine"

He looked at me looking at him and said "What the (expletive) are you looking at?"

I swear to God an instantaneous red mist descended and without giving much thought I passed the trolley to the wife and 'fell' on him, knocking the wind out of his sails and applied the good old tried and tested wrist lock technique which took him to the ground then applying an elbow spiral to maintain total control over the sad basum.

Store security were only five or so seconds away apparently already having observed the worm on the store security cameras.

I felt pretty good after that and the experience certainly brought back a few fond memories but I wasn't in the least prepared for the wifes comments as we pushed our trolley to the car..........

Wife:"You stupid bugga!! You're not paid to do that sort of thing any more, you're retired for Gods sake!! What if he had a knife on him?!!"

Me: "That my dear is why he was incapacitated and took to ground asap"

Wife: "You'll not be happy till you make me a widow"

Me: " Not to worry, you are the sole beneficiary in my will"

Moral being, if it happens again, look the other way and decide on fish or curry for supper....anything but steak

I swear to God an instantaneous red mist (your macular edema??:hmmm:) descended and without giving much thought I passed the trolley to the wife and 'fell' on him Well I'm not overly familiar with Brit law but if your going to play the part of honorably retired C.O.P, at least have a set of cuffs on your person to demonstrate to tryers-of-fact that you're weren't assaulting the poor devil. Generally the shoplifter/thief must actually leave or attempt exit the shop to have committed the crime otherwise the benefit-of-the-doubt goes to him.(several years at Toy's-R-Us during Christmas madness-fake bottom boxes, collaborating cashiers etc). As U may recall in a PM from me, my intervention in a female street gang assault/mugging by 5+ large females kicking the bejeeezus out of another, prone in the fetal position covering her head with her arms, on the mean streets- 6th and Market- of SF while I engaged in another security matter. AT least I was baton, pistol and in uniform-cuffs equipped. In CA a 'shod foot' is considered a deadly weapon, so my options were limited-immediate intervention was required. Fortunately several large gentlemen stepped in to rescue me from the escalating situation; each escorting a 'lady' from the scene...saving a lot of paperwork. My wife was equally PO'd and since we're both prone to heartattack or lawsuits ...not wrong. :subsim: needs U alive; desist in the future! The cow was already dead and red meat isn't good for U anyhow...next time just alert the management...you ol trooper!:Kaleun_Salute:.

Jim as i understand it it's not theft until the persons are off the premises. I assume there is a lesser charge with intent to steal. Reason i ask is while at work i carry a CCTV shop-alert two way, not just shops are connected pubs as well along with other places like mind.

Around here Tesco is the target the most as i hear that the most on the two way and they only react once the suspects have left the shop. If of course they are lucky to be watching them in the act and have contacted the police to intercept them with CCTV's help.

Crikey! wasn't expecting this amount of responses :o

I'll try to explain....

For starters I will never tolerate being sworn at by an oxygen thief, especially in the presence of my wife, a fact that will probably eventually be my undoing as I progress in years and physical agility declines later in life (much later I hope).

The reason shops tend to wait until the thief leaves the premises is to have a 100% chance of conviction. The acts I witnessed as well as those of store security on their cctv amounted to 'intent' or 'reasonable suspicion' you might even stretch it to 'going equipped' and me jumping the gun so-to-speak probably wound things forward almost instantly.

To be totally honest in the past I've always advised shop staff to wait until the premises have been exited so I'm far from blameless this time.

To conclude....the wife received a phone call (I gave it at the time of the incident to the store security staff) from the store manager when I was out 'working' asking me if I'd pop in on Monday because he'd like to show the stores appreciation by way of a shopping voucher.

I will go in but tbh I'm torn as to whether I'll use it to replenish some of my beer stocks or give it to a local animal shelter.

Having said that, I'll be gutted if its a voucher for a steak :haha:

Assault occasioning Actual Bodily Harm (ABH) – s47 OAPA 1861
False imprisonment is a common law offence involving the unlawful and intentional or reckless detention of the victim. An act of false imprisonment may amount in itself to an assault. If a separate assault accompanies the detention this should be reflected in the particulars of the indictment. The offence is either way, and carries a maximum penalty on indictment of 5 years’ imprisonment and/or a fine. :k_confused:
The offence is committed when a person intentionally or recklessly assaults another, thereby causing Actual Bodily Harm (ABH). Bodily harm has its ordinary meaning and includes any hurt calculated to interfere with the health or comfort of the victim: such hurt need not be permanent, but must be more than transient and trifling: (R v Donovan 25 Cr. App. Rep. 1). It is an either way offence, which carries a maximum penalty on indictment of five years’ imprisonment and/or a fine.
Psychological harm that involves more than mere emotions such as fear, distress or panic can amount to ABH. In any case where psychiatric injury is relied upon as the basis for an allegation of ABH, and the matter is not admitted by the defence, expert evidence must be called by the prosecution (R v Chan-Fook 99 Cr. App. R. 147, CA). Unless of course the perpetrator makes a legitimate claim to being under the influence of the 'red mist' :hmmm: and is otherwise a respectable citizen when not under the influence of elevated testosterone in defense of chivalry when 'shopping in consortium'; in which case the matter may be reduced to 'mutual combat' by two less than mentally competent antagonists by the magistrate.:haha: Features that provide a useful indication of when a charge of ABH may be appropriate are set out above.
This offence is capable of being racially aggravated under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998. Refer to Racist and Religious Hate Crime - Prosecuting Guidance (https://www.cps.gov.uk/node/5827), elsewhere in CPS guidance. Oxygen thieves??
See the Assault Definitive guideline (https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/Assault_definitive_guideline_-_Crown_Court.pdf) for sentencing guidelines for this offence. https://www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/offences-against-person-incorporating-charging-standard (https://www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/offences-against-person-incorporating-charging-standard) IMHO Jimbuna's facing 3-5 years(Category three of sentencing guidelines with red mist mitigation:yep:) in Bedlam:https://images.huffingtonpost.com/2016-03-18-1458319560-8063333-InsaneAsylum_Bethlem_ward3-thumb.jpg (http://www.the-line-up.com/insane-asylum-bedlam/) ( in the red mist ward:O:) and a fine!

THE EX-GOVERNOR OF CA WISHES YOU WELL IN YOUR TRAVELS: https://media3.giphy.com/media/3oEjHSNWEQN0DbSULu/200w.gif if YOU GET A CHANCE TO TRY PLINY THE ELDER BEER https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1441/1460/files/pliny-logo.jpg?v=1474415035 PLEASE DO; MY PROSPECTIVE SON-IN-LAW IS A BREWMASTER THERE AND I GOTTA WEDDING TO PAY FOR :k_confused:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1441/1460/files/plinyglass-copy.jpg?v=1474415021
Pliny the Elder ( ahem! ADMIRAL PLINY THE ELDER:Kaleun_Salute:) is brewed with Amarillo, Centennial, CTZ, and Simcoe hops. It is well-balanced with malt, hops, and alcohol, slightly bitter with a fresh hop aroma of floral, citrus, and pine. Best enjoyed FRESH! That is why we make it in such limited supply. Actual bottling date is printed on each bottle!
Where did we come up with this name? Back in the year 2000, our friend, Vic Kralj, who owns the Bistro in Hayward, California, decided to have his first ever Double IPA festival. Vic invited 10 breweries, 6 of whom (including us) had to brew something special for him since we had nothing that would fall under this style category. Vinnie had made a Double IPA at Blind Pig in 1994, but was not brewing one at Russian River Brewing at the time. He had an idea for the recipe, but not a name. After much research in beer books, brainstorming, and deliberation, we came up with “Pliny the Elder”. Pliny, the man, lived in the first century- 23 to 79 A.D. According to our brewing references, he and his contemporaries either created the botanical name or at least wrote about Lupus Salictarius, or hops, currently known as Humulus Lupulus. That was a very early reference to an important part of any Double IPA! Pliny the beer has now become one of our flagship brews!
Pliny the Elder was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who wrote about his uncle succumbing to ash and smoke during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. while rescuing people. Cheers to the scholar, historian, officer, writer, and Roman Naturalist- Pliny the Elder! SAID YOUNG MAN RECENTLY PRESENTED ME WITH PLINY THE ELDER BEER T-SHIRT...SO I'M THOROUGHLY BIASED!:Kaleun_Cheers:

Have not slept well the last nights, worst drought ever now in Germany. It rained once in two months here, and temperatures are by now getting above 35 degrees Celsius, around 95 Fahrenheit, while they do not get below 25 degrees Celsius or 77 Fahrenheit at night any more.
We live in a forested area, and there are some ponds and lakes, but there are now a lot of dead birds.

Problem is now the harvest of grain like wheat, rye and all that.. the EU has decided to come up for the damage financially, but you can't eat money and the rising temperatures show a trend. Seems the weather is getting more extreme, we also get tornados now :o

This is a quick sketch (blown up somewhat) of a plane which crossed our skies yesterday, heading in the direction of Coningsby.

It had 2 big noisy radial engines (the sound had me running outside) and looked like a 1930s airliner. It had a hump-backed look, rather like a Caudron 'Simoun' shape but was not a Caudron of any kind... if anything, it looked more like an 'Electra' but for the single broad tailfin. I'm pretty sure it's not a Boeing 247 either, because of the nose shape, but it might have been.

It was a cream colour overall with (I think) a narrow diagonal red band at the rear of the fuselage. I'm going to look at other books but does anyone know of a preserved airliner like this over here?

^Any air shows/museum flights in the area this weekend?

I guess the DC-3 is right out. The humpback look wouldn't fit that. Curtiss-Wright AT-9 is no airliner and the nose is a bit off from what you drew there but who knows. The Blenheim which is flying this weekend has a distinct and different nose and not really a hunchback.

Edit: Thanks, guys... that must've been it. I've never seen it before so never even crossed my mind. The 'cream' colour might have been the late afternoon sun plus a lot of yellow dust in the air (we had a combine harvester working just the other side of the hedge yesterday). The red fuselage band was there and the hump-back shape. Yes, That was it

Less chance at this time of year as the nights are drawing in and the evenings are getting cool. At best what we call a Indian Summer lasting up to a week. Summers last fling before departing.

LOL yeah, be taking a mix of Pesos (for the obligatory exit tax) and Dollars for any spends but seeing as we are all inclusive I should imagine about £300 to 400 worth of each plus a similar amount in £ will suffice.

Building wheels for the first time in flippin ages. Boss has a lot of faith in me...
:help:

One step away from an apoplectic fit... after measuring and measuring again, feeding the figures into the calculator, after fitting all 36 spokes, then I realise I need to cut down their length... Oh well, fun to build, so it must be thrice the fun to build, unbuild and build again... It better be

Just enjoying a glass of merlot after my tea: bread & butter with a 3-egg smoked-cheese omelette, and a slice of fried puffball mushroom on the side.

Moira spotted this fungal monster, almost the size of a football, in a field under some trees on the way home earlier... so she jumped out of the car and plucked it from the grass. It's pure white like a huge marshmallow inside... golden and sweet when fried up

I'm still feeling okay...
