Seeing those videos from Canada makes me nostalgic for the Holy Loch, and a trip across the Clyde to Gourock on a bad day. :D Just got my electric back four days after Ian went through. Having trouble finding my copy of Key Largo.

As everyone has commented, great shots. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up: The Submarine looks remarkably preserved as well. Not sure if you knew there was a Subsim Meet at Schleswig-Holstein, Laboe with U-995. Everyone raved about how well U-995 was preserved as well.

Thanks guys. No power or internet. On my phone. It’s a disaster for sure but we are all safe. My son in law got me a generator so we have the basics.

We were hammered and then some with Fiona weren't we :o:o:oops:

My brother lost about 80 trees on his property. Just got power back on a few days ago. We fared better where we were at. We had power a few days after we got hit.

Yea it was a hell of a ride. We were four hours short of seven full days without power but did have a 5500 watt generator. Downtown Charlottetown along North River Rd. looked like a war zone earlier in the week. The clean up is gonna be a long hard go. Glad you are alright.

I just saw some jars of Moira's attempt at fig preserve in the kitchen. She made two batches because the first lot set like bitumen in the jar - you have to gouge it out with a knife. This I see she's labelled "thick and chunky"

Yesterday I had to attend a hospital appointment at Lincoln General. Afterwards we had time to drive the very short distance to the cathedral quarter, where Moira photographed a Roman gate which had recently captivated one of her FB friends in the US, who'd seen it pictured online and found it incredible that we can just walk up to such a thing in our own back yard. She also took a number of pics of other ruins (including me) and the cathedral - plus this great statue of Tennyson in the grounds of same

I got to fire the new Dental Office this morning. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

It wasn't really going well. I showed up at first to check them out as replacement for my old, retired Dentist and get a troublesome wisdom tooth yanked that was starting to act up. The first appt. was an "eval" and the Dr. told me he'd get to the wisdom tooth eventually (I've been hearing this for almost 20 years).

"Doc, I think its infected. Can't you pull it today?"

"We'll know when its time. Not today."

The tooth really went bad that night and I showed up before the office opened the next morning for some emergency service. I told them I was in a lot of pain and it wasn't subsiding. They let me sit in the waiting room while everyone in the office went to a meeting. Two hours later the same Dr. says "Yeah, its infected all right.." and finally hits me with some Novocain. I get the tooth pulled and go home. I ask about an Rx for some kind of Penicillin and they look at me like I'm asking for Crack.

I did the follow up a couple of days ago. Two hours of X Rays and one hour for a cleaning. Bear in mind I had a tooth extracted one week earlier. No one wants to check how things are healing- until I ask.

Dr. Oz finally shows up for a quick look. He wants to pull some more teeth. I have two molars with crowns. They were done 12 years ago and about four years ago. I have no issues with them at all but they need to come out because.... reasons. He also wants to yank a cap/crown on an incisor that I paid top dollar for two years ago. Again, reasons. I tell him I have no problems with any of those teeth.

"Oh, you will.."
Right, and the Sun will turn into a Red Giant and consume the Earth. But not right now. I find out this plan will cost me somewhere between four to six thousand dollars by the end of the year. :o

Because...reasons.
For teeth that aren't giving me any problems. :timeout:

Maybe he's peed off because he didn't find any cavities?

Keep in mind I've already paid out somewhere between 5 and 6 hundred dollars for three visits, a yanked wisdom tooth, X rays and a cleaning.

Its as if I was speaking in a foreign language the whole time, at least my bank account is good. Besides, my Momma didn't raise any fools. :yep:

But, how would I bail out of this boutique without any threats or litigation? :hmmm: Even though I've paid for the work they did, handsomely, I don't want to find out about any termination fees or "Because we said so!" fees.

I called this morning and explained that I wanted to cancel my up-coming appts. and have my name removed from their patient lists. Basically, they have been fired but I'm being really pleasant and courteous about it. Naturally, I get a "Why??". This is where you need to think ahead. You're telling someone why you won't be bankrolling their new Condo or Power Boat.

"Well, I worked my budget for a while last night and I won't be able to afford it". BAM! What they hear is not that I'm cheap, I'm BROKE and there's no way you make money off the poor. :D

They lady on the phone sets a speed record wrapping it up. "Well,-that's-sad-and-I-hope-everything-works-out-gotta-go!".

Perfect. :yeah:

Have I mentioned that I loath shopping for a Dentist? :nope:

Well, you don't want to lie but does it count if you lie to a sheister? :03:

Basically, I wanted to drop them without any drama or ill-feelings.
This was one of those offices with three dentists, two dental techs, and an army of Admins and Assistants pounding the forms and paperwork. They literally have a "bullpen" next to the waiting room. Which is fine, but they are telegraphing that they aren't interested unless their patients have a sweet dental plan at their office or Union Hall.

If they see you as not being a steady source of revenue, you tend to be ignored.
They don't like or hate you, they just don't see you. :03:

So, did I lie to them? Mostly, no. I just told them I was one of the Untouchables. :D

Got really lucky today! I'd gone to the pharmacy to straighten out a lapsed prescription and had to sit and wait at Walgreens. Medicine in hand, I then headed to the supermarket for the evening edibles; and then home. Upon arriving home, after 2 hours, I noticed my wallet missing! :k_confused: Briefly checking the driver seat area to no effect, I drove back swiftly to the pharmacy where I'd sat waiting for the prescription refill, assuming it had slid out of my athletic shorts pocket. As I pulled into the lot, a lady driving an outgoing pickup truck shouted out my full name...I halted and backed up. She handed me the wallet! She had looked at my driver's license with foto and was enroute to my residence and had recognized me! She showed me the map on her cell phone. The pharmacy department was closing when she'd spotted the billfold on the floor under the chair and so resolved to take care of the matter personally. I carry the cash separate on a clip; but would have been greatly inconvenienced over losing ATM & credit cards, driver's license , passport card, my pistol CCW and any number of Medicare and insurance cards.:hmmm: I've returned quit a few a few wallets and cellphones myself in my time...so perhaps the god of good deeds figured I was owed one. :yeah:

Online looking for a decent air fryer in an effort at energy cost cutting efficiency.

Air Fryer's have come a long way. A number of them will air fry, bake, dehydrate and also rotisserie your various foods. We got a power air fryer oven XL with 3 racks. We really haven't tried to cook anything in it except to air fry chicken, fish and chips ( fries ). The oven has many settings and works well. They can be had for $ 100 dollars. We haven't fry-ed anything in the last 2 years or more. Air fryers are fast, efficient and cook food in a much healthier way although I still miss a good deep fried fish sandwich.

https://www.amazon.com/PowerXL-Rotisserie-Dehydrator-Deluxe-Accessories/dp/B07YGVC4LX/ref=asc_df_B07YGVC4LX?tag=bngsmtphsnus-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80745509419136&hvnetw=s&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584345032755519&psc=1

Others from Emeril Legasse are in the $ 300 dollar range. We found the Power fryer XL to do everything we want it to do.

The dual zone cooking is a winner, in my book. The only Issue I have with ours is balancing out heat ranges / cooking times between fish, chicken and fries. I have the original air fryer similar to the Ninja that you are looking at except it only has one basket / drawer.

It did a nice job as well. If you do get it, let us know how it works and if you like it.

Going into town today I slowed up to let a guy in a big fish & chip van come out from a side road - he was struggling to get this huge vehicle across the road and a driver coming the other way honked at him viciously as he struggled to keep out of the way

I said to Moira that if I was still a copper (I was once - briefly) I'd have gone after that car driver - who hadn't slowed down one little bit - to tell him (or her) to take note of the road signs and be prepared for vehicles coming out of a side road that was clearly marked

I also said that if he (or she) had asked me why I didn't go after the fish & chip man I'd have just said "Because I like a nice piece of cod"

The chips I made weren't really crispy enough so I'm going to add a couple of more minutes on the frying time tonight.

You will figure it out. Ours has icons for fish, chicken, fries and other things. You can individually raise / Lower the temperature as well as increase / decrease the cooking time. It's a great machine that even a dummy can use. This is of course a great comfort to me. :haha:

@Aktungbby: what does the standby battery power, exactly? The fridge, the (garaged)freezer, and the AC...hopefully?? We'll know better when it's all done with finally; :hmmm: and my wife is happy...hopefullly. Fortunately, the battery system can go on the exterior stucco and not in the garage, which would have necessitated removing a cabinet and stored gardening equipment. I'm not giving up my extensive power-failure collection of flashlights and candles jus' yet!:O:

Our State Gov't's been having a big fight with the Train Union for the past almost 2 years. On and off strikes and go slows. So this week our p'ed off Transport Minister says "free travel for a week for Joe Public".

I took the opportunity to go to the Airport and have a look around ( normally $15 each way ). Last time I was there was just before covid.

The tourists are back in droves, the place was buzzing with activity. I hung around the Food Court ( they've got a viewing deck, you can watch the planes land and take off :) ) A lot of normal gentle takeoffs, but some where they positively leap into the air - people watching going "ooh wow look at that".

A lot of cafes still shut - signs out the front "Staff Wanted". No takers ??

Cabin Crew of all nationalities, pretty stewardesses in their designer uniforms.

It was a nice day.

A family of 'Do-Rights' down the road from my mother in law have recently fostered some problem kids. Now suddenly there are reports starting on the village facebook page about youths trying to get into peoples' cars, even in the very road where this bunch have moved in. And Moira's mother has had people creeping about in her back yard in the middle of the night leaving gates open - never happened before. She's 78, lives alone and is now scared - there's never been such trouble on this housing estate - they're all owner-occupiers and decent people who look out for one another. COULD it be just coincidence? In a pig's eye

I just said to Moira as we passed their place that I'd like to creep onto their drive at night, let their tyres down and shove a potato up the exhaust... see how they like a bit of ASB

"But it weren't me, honest - it were an old bloke - that one who's mother in law lives up t' road"

"Him? Pull the other one ya little bleeper - he doesn't look like he could tear his way out of a wet paper bag"

I had a Les Paul copy guitar in pieces sitting in a box, wrapped up. For a copy, it wasn't bad with the Tune-o-matic bridge / tremolo. The neck had not only warped but also twisted. I have never seen a guitar neck do that.

A friend of a friend expressed interest in my guitar. My guitar had nice pickups and body and the tremolo in it. The gentleman offered to trade me his ESP LTD MH100 with a basswood body and a quilted maple top with a transparent blue color. It features two " Humbuckers " or dual coil pickups. It also has a very nice Floyd Rose floating bridge. The pickups in the guitar have a sound better suited to heavy metal. They don't work too well with the all tube amps I prefer and use.

The ESP guitar does sound great with solid state amps of which I have a few. With the Floyd Rose tremolo, David Gilmour style string bends are a breeze. The gentleman traded his guitar away as his hands were too big to be able to articulate the 25.5 inch scale the ESP Guitars use. The Les Paul style guitars suit him well.

I plan on replacing the pickups in it and also the machine heads to locking tuners in the head stock. The strings will then be locked at the bridge and also the tuners in the head stock. I am also going to install push-pull pots in the volume and tone control to control and flip the pickups into single / dual coil action. It's my hope with the new pickup controls and careful consideration of the pick-ups, I can get Stratocastor sounds and tones when going to single coil mode. The Guitar is great now and will be awesome when the upgrades are completed.

I don't know which one i should pick, only thing is-It must not cost more than 1000 Danish kroner=140 dollars

I also have to think about my hearing problems.

First step is buying the book Legendary Piano-ABBA and some books on how to play.

If you have the time, you should give keyboards a try, Markus. Casio makes keyboards that can be had in the U.S for $150 dollars and less. Other keyboards are considerably more. Most are full size keyboards with many modes and sounds. Check them out. I have one here and you could have it to start your musical journey with. :) It plays well. Like anything with musical instruments, playing them isn't too hard. Playing musical instruments well is another matter. If you're serious, you can find online musical instruction as well. With regards to hearing, most keyboards have a headphone jack. That would make things easier for you.

The reality is, it's not how well you play but how much enjoyment you can get from just playing. Who knows, you might find some musicians to jam with, amateur or professional or semi-professional. It doesn't matter. It's amazing how much you can learn from just playing with other musicians.

Yes, White Christmas of course

@ Arnold - we've seen too many neighbours (we called them that even though they lived some way off) grow old and suddenly less able - then find themselves stranded out here in the sticks with no car, no buses and the nearest shop miles away

So we need to move into the village while we're still fit enough to do it - plus Moira's old mum needs keeping an eye on now (she already lives in the village)

We'll hate to leave and have to swap this nice old cottage for a modern bungalow but it's all about being practical and not leaving things until it's too late - as our friends did

One time I got the break of a lifetime. Mom sent me out into the frigid wasteland to do the loathsome grueling job and it was brutally deep & cold. I haven't been into the current research project that much anyway (I basically lost faith in it nabout a year ago and I'm convinced that it will never lead to anything profitable). The new research project is much further behind, but shows a lot of promise.

Dead beat this morning after a great feast for six; prepared by my chef wife(I peeled potatos) & served on our Christmas themed china service. And, while everyone's sacked out in front of the telly digesting, it falls to me to scullery the kitchen back to pristinity for the next day's culinary efforts. All the china dishes have to be washed by hand! Good thing I was a dishwasher/busboy for a summer at a local drugstore lunch counter where everyone did business (in'68)when not caddying golfbags; nuthin like on-the-job training for 42 years of domestic bliss...she cooks; I clean!:o:yep::doh:

I just found an old plate I designed for Royal Doulton on ebay. You can't eat off these, however - they're described as 'cabinet plates'

Both services are stacked meticulously downlow 'cabinet plates':haha: at floor level; so they don't get ruined in the next earthquake like our everyday crockery does...twice!!... in 2000(along with the chimney-epicentered 500 yards from the house!) and the 2014 tembler that ruined downtown Napa! The Christmas service is a handpainted Mexican affair-we don't trust to survive in a dishwasher-hence handwashing.

Though I haven't been posting as much, I have indeed been lurking around the Forums.

Many things have taken hold of my life (Sea Cadets, school, real-life commitments, and relationships) and prevented me from posting as much as I did two years ago. Oftentimes, I find myself too tired to engage in the online community.

My family is well; life has been great, I'm grinding out school work and enjoying life. Over the summer, I got to enjoy the benefits of owning a lake house. I would water ski, tube, and take adventures across the lake. I also got a job working at the local Marina as a dockhand (or whatever the heck my position was, I just did whatever my boss needed me to do)

Recently, I've been working on getting certifications in Emergency Management from FEMA through training provided by the Sea Cadets. Life is good so far and I can't complain.

Don't get me wrong, I do miss when I was engaged with the community (though many users probably didn't like my spam of the threads) :haha: I think back fondly to when I crushed everyone in the Whack-a-Squirrel competition two years ago! I am still receiving jokes about my mom sliding me food underneath my door. Y'all make me chuckle :shucks:

Enough about me. How's everyone else doing? I really like the paintings, Eichh. They look great!

Thanks for the compliment re paintings - I did do quite a few for Hallmark Cards some years ago, so you might even have seen these in the US (not the Santa designs, though)

Hope to see you on the next W.A.S. (maybe Easter) so you might have a chance then to get all medieval over Aktung :D

...on day 3 or 4 of constant drizzle from an 'atmospheric river' formation known as the Pineapple Express bombarding the California coastline and Sierra Nevada mountains in massive follow-on waves originating in the tropics. No sunlight for my kittycat's basking, but lots of water for the severely reduced reservoirs water levels. The local floodgated Napa River flows unvexed into San Fransico Bay as downtown Napans are filling sandbags against current issued flood-warnings as I post. That's a small price to pay as the multi-year Western drought is so severe and getting all this rain(in 55⁰ F. temperatures to boot) is the real 2022 Christmas gift! And, we'll take what we can get with gratitude! :yeah:

We're having a bright sunshine 61⁰F day with more atmospheric River yet to come. The good news is: the six California principle "mega-reservoirs which were at 30% are now at 60ish% full. Additionally the Sierra snowpack is at record levels to melt into the water supply come springtime. On the downside: one small town approx 40 miles to the East in the Sacramento Delta has been ordered to evacuate to high ground as the levees along the high rivers have breeched in two places...

Had a near disaster myself. I got summoned forth to San Francisco at 9PM-50 miles- with rain to-beat-the-band and 50+mph cross-winds to match across three major toll-bridges and Corolla's front-drive wheels slipping, even in low torque. For the toll-free return direction, I first called my boat captain who monitors road and weather to inquire about returning the toll free direction across the Golden Gate Bridge, and avoiding the windy Bay Bridge I'd arrived on. The route has been closed for flooding this month for several days. I finally get to a one-lane route at Sonoma around midnight approx 15 mile from my home and am following the vehicle in front, when the road disappears...70 yards of six-inch very brown deep water from a nearby creek and I'm in it! Real sudden-like (Flash really means Flash BBY!) with utterly no chance to turn around; and I can't see the deep ditches on both sides anyhow. (note: flood water/sewage does not smell good at all)With no options: I managed to punch through, creeping in second gear w/o stopping(fatal) and got back onto the dry road. I called the road condition into to 911 and made it home by 00:45. It's till pouring rain as I post and 31 road closures R in effect in Sonoma County today. History repeats itself: the forcast for the Atmospheric River's Pineapple Express as of Tuesday is 10" of rain, 50+ mph winds, heavy flooding, landslides and expected loss of life??! This time around I'm retired; off the road, and in my easy chair...:shucks: @ El Whacko: "Bring out yer dead!:O:"

As the storm intensified, it tapped into abundant tropical moisture available in the Pacific Ocean, creating a reasonably strong "atmospheric river" carrying copious amounts of moisture from Hawaii to California. This specific type of atmospheric river, known as the "Pineapple Express" in a nod to the storm's fuel source due to its Hawaiian origins, is set to bring significant moisture to California. Think of this as a narrow pipeline of moisture that originates in the tropics. Bottom line: this beats Earthquakes and firestorms any day!

My lady had me help her put up " Christmas Blowup's" on the lawn. They are those cute holiday season figurines with air compressors. We had a pretty good snow and I dutifully went out to do the snow-blowing on the drive. Unfortunately, she had the electrical cords out on the drive and I ran them over with the snow-blower.

This destroyed some of the cords and broke the shear key for the snowblower engine. We also had freezing rain which froze other extension cords in the ice. We had to wait for the spring flaw to get them out.

Six atmospheric rivers later with 3 more due; the death toll stands at 17 and half of California's counties are declared disaster areas. Prince Harry, the Spare, has had to evacuate his mansion in Montecito. Precipitation is 138% above normal. Some but not most of the states reservoirs have begun to fill -essential for the central California Valley's agriculture. The system, built for a climate that no longer exists, (it's been a 2 decade drought) will get us through this year. The effect on ground water levels which are also critical, is unclear, as is the effect the massive Sierra snowpack will have in the Spring melt-off.:hmmm: Bottom line: with aquifers being depleted, and wells dry from massive agriculture, even these storms aren't enough to quell the long-term drought. But we'll take all we can get...world-famous Napa grapes need water BBY!:shucks:

What Jim said is simple advice but makes a lot of sense. My lady is big on salads, maybe with a slice of pizza. Sometimes, the salad have a little bit of chicken or steak cut up in them. Most of the time, just salad and lots of veggies.

Flavonoids in your diet is also especially important. First, Flavonoids are powerful antioxidant agents. Not only can they rid the body of free radicals but also help in the reduction or elimination of inflammation. Also, the flavonoids found in tea, coffee, and soy may help lower your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

One study published in the Journal of Translational found that people who consumed higher levels of flavonoids as part of their diet had a lower risk of experiencing a cardiovascular event. This can also translate in cerebral vascular accidents / episodes. Flavonids can be found in not only wine but also other fruit drinks, especially grape juice. Flavonoids in foods has also been shown to naturally reduce blood pressure and also lower the risk of Diabetes. In addition, Flavonoids have been shown to stop the growth of Cancer cells.

Flavanols

These types of flavonoids are known for their antioxidant properties. They may help manage symptoms of cardiovascular disease. Flavanols are found in these foods:

onions
kale
grapes and red wine
tea
peaches
berries
tomatoes
lettuce
scallions
broccoli

Flavan-3-ols

Foods with these types of flavonoids are very rich in nutrients. They include:

white tea
green tea
oolong tea
black tea
apples
purple and red grapes
blueberries
strawberries
cocoa and chocolate products

From your previous posts, you seem pretty active with your boating and such. Keep in mind assistance might be further away if you're out on your boat and have another episode like the one you just had.

Maybe take up walking, If you haven't already. I need to do more of that too instead of the saddle time spent on a motorcycle. I like being out with a stick and hockey puck on the ice in the winter. These days though, I can be timed with a sundial instead of a watch. :03: You and your wife can celebrate your daughter's birthday with her another time. I'm certain your wife and daughter are just happy that you're okay.

We have an exercise program at work. Sometimes the people at work engage in jumping to conclusions or running down the boss. :03: I'm not sure if that qualifies as exercise but it does get the blood pumping if not boiling. :yep:

Take it easy and let us all know how you're doing in your recovery.

...thanks again y'all for the concern! One point: don't ever wear a good night$hirt! The EMT standing, in your bed in his EMT boots, snips that off you to place the heartmonitor sensors on the abdomen; and then uses the queensize bottom-sheet to hoist U onto the gurney... all of which I have no memory of 'till I was in the ER with my head in the scanner:timeout:!!? My wife says I spoke to the ambulance personnel going out the door, but I've absolutely no recollection whatsoever of it till I came to in a cut-up nightshirt atop a fitted bedsheet-which my bride promptly reclaimed...priorities I tells ya. :O: I certainly enjoyed sleeping in my own bed with renewed appreciation last night...:yep::shucks: and the cat, age 14, was glad to see me too; demanding love and attention. The EMTs were pros; with no traffic at that hour, no sirens or lights were necessary...so no nosey neighbors were disturbed on my miserable account!:yeah: My wife read all the G-mail'd test results to me this AM; aside from somewhat elevated glucose, I'm well within parameters on all issues and the EKG, yesterday, matched the one from 3 years ago following a light cardio-event(mild infarction?) out on the boat in the middle of the Bay.

I was devastated to discover that an older friend and a good friend at that passed away. Services for him will be on Saturday. We both played in bands and sometimes I joined his band and he joined mine to play impromptu sets. We always had such a great time

I would sometimes just quietly sneak in to see him and his band playing out. I wanted to avoid being a distraction. People were smiling, dancing and just having a good time and enjoying the evening being together. Michael was always so gregarious with the people there and showed his appreciation for them coming out to see him and the band.

He and his band were a part of a great many happy and momentous occasions such as after wedding party's and engagement gatherings and such. Michael had a way of making people he just met feel like they were the most important person in the world and his best friend. It was genuine. Michael and his band brought a lot of joy and happiness to everyone they met.

The ladies loved him. He loved music and sharing music with everyone. When he and his band played, it was a party and you were going to have a great time whether you wanted to or not.

Rest in peace my friend. Thanks for, stopping by and well, for everything you were and did and for everyone you ever knew.....

Sueing my former landlord. He refuses to return my deposit and actually wants me to pay for services and repairs that (he claims) were needed to be done after I had moved out. Instead of returning about two thousand Euros to me he wants me to pay about the same amount.

Wastes a lot of time, only makes lawyers richer, requires an enormous amount of painstaking bureaucracy, and is annoyning all the way. He uses a strategy that unfortunately works way to often: massively overcharging, letting the former tenant go to court, and then trying to settle out of court by "generously" offering to reduce the amount asked for by half or something like that - which would still mean a veritable profit for the landlord.

Tender and juicy baby! skin isn’t as crispy I like, in fact somewhat rubbery in places. But I think some direct heat time over the coals might have helped with that. The other reason for the skin is I had the water bowl filled which creates a bit of steam inside the cooker. Might leave it empty next time.

Was about a 2.5-3.0 hours cook time with an internal meat temperature of 165 F.

This will sound crazy until you try it. :yeah:

The next time you want to BBQ some pork chops (thin or thick cut) or a small tenderloin, grab a bottle of cheap Italian salad dressing. :yep:
The cheaper, the better. Just make sure it has some kind of olive oil and small chunks of garlic and bell pepper floating in it. Store-brand is fine, generic is even better.

Marinade the pork in the salad dressing for at least a couple of hours. Just dump the meat in a pan a sploosh a bunch of the dressing over it.

When grilling, hotter coals work better (especially towards the end of the grilling). You want the outside of the pork to turn a light to medium brown. This will add a very slight sugary crust. :D

Why it works- Cheap Italian dressing has all of the things in it to really kick up pork. More than likely, they added some kind of Sucrose or cane sugar, which adds that neat crust. The olive oil also helps with the crusty part but also keeps the meat tender. Those chunks of garlic and pepper add a nice balance of flavors and while most of the vinegar cooks off, it also helps the marinade to penetrate into the pork.

For what it's worth I thought I'd share this - I was casting around again for something to use as a mouse mat when my eye fell upon some cork mats Moira got (very cheaply) from somewhere like B&M Stores. Regular mouse mats bobble, fray, tear and slide about but these cork mats don't and, it seems to me, ought to last forever

Maybe they already make cork mouse mats - I don't know - but I'll bet they cost a heck of a lot more than one of these and I've been using it happily for weeks now

I've been using this basic model for more than 15 years:

https://www.logitech.com/en-us/products/mice/m575-ergo-wireless-trackball.910-005869.html

It just works and they tend to last for at least five years of continuous use.

It takes a little getting used to, but its really very natural. The only downsides are that it will need a new battery about once a year and the suspension points for the ball will need cleaning about once a month (just pop the ball out and clean the three "bearing" spots with a cotton bud or a toothpick). I plug the wireless Dongle into my mouse port and just forget it.

You can "tune" the ball response using Logitech's app with no issues (like tuning it for sniping). The app is also handy for checking battery life. Priced at around $35 (US), its painless to replace. Just swap out the old track ball and dongle and get back to work. Non repairable wear points are the A and B keys (they tend to mush out over time) and the scroll wheel (it gets gungy after a while and you'd have to tear apart the entire unit to clean it).

The big pay-off, NO mouse pad and no wire flopping around on your desk. :D
I'm set up on fairly large desk (5 ft. X 2.5 ft.) but it also shines on a much smaller table top.

Out shopping with the wife and come across a shoplifter who was giving the shop assistant who challenged them some serious grief. Stepped in and the silly billy threw a punch the consequences of which led them to being put down on the floor and being physically detained until local law enforcement arrived.

Thirty minutes later I am thanked by the law and the wife is scolding me saying I am too old for this rubbish now.

I answered "What if it had of been you who had a punch thrown at them?" and she replied "That would be different and you are there to protect me in such a case"

Cheers, folks.

Been a hot minute since I've been around, and it's likely to be another before I return again. Recently finished my first tour of duty and, for some reason, chose to keep on with it; moved to Florida and am now teaching my job to the new faces joining the fleet.

Trying to get used to the daily life still; happily single still, though perhaps a little less than a few years ago, and had a bout with alcoholism a while back that I managed to get over before it got too bad. I'll be damned if I let that stop me from enjoying the drink though; can't afford to give sailors nor Irishmen a bad rep.

I'm hoping all you old-timers a doing great, and if there's ever a roll call, just know you might need to message me directly to get ahold of me; I'm more than willing to help where needed.

On the news and headed my way by tomorrow: a genuine ' Bomb Cyclone' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqC8ZNoMao0 It's been cold and raining all week, with severe flooding and evacuations; but this is ominous: Huge waves and 70+ mph winds. It's not an Atmospheric River or the Pinaapple Express this time; but is akin to a hurricane. There is one dead so far from a treefall on a vehicle. A bomb cyclone, also known as bombogenesis, is a storm that intensifies very rapidly when air pressure drops at least 24 millibars within 24 hours1234. This can happen when a warm air mass collides with a cold one. As the air rises in the atmosphere, wind spirals in at the base of the storm. The lower the pressure, the stronger the storm..In a season of weather oddities, a new phrase was added to local vocabulary Tuesday afternoon. It's called the "Fujiwhara Effect" and is the interaction between two similarly sized low-pressure centers rotating around a common center. https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisco/news/stormfront-pinwheels-damaging-winds-into-san-francisco-bay-area/ https://assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com/hub/i/r/2023/03/21/d56e1ff4-b83a-4abb-ab71-a4b8e17ce4cb/thumbnail/620x349/424dbd288f7e8923f21a18ec1e0fb478/weather-oddity.jpg

I don't know sometimes why you don't up sticks and move to BC or some other place far away, Vinnie - I don't know how you sleep at night

Stay safe, mate :timeout:

Stay safe, mate :timeout:Now that U mention it: after the minor TIA, I did a two night apnea test and sent it it in. The results came back, and I'll be wearing a Cpap mask of some sort. I'm a snorer and my wife has said for years that sometimes she hears me stop breathing...now she gives me a good shove to revive me. The supposed TIA may have simply been a sleeping disorder. My youngest brother has been wearing one for years...and my dad probably should have. As for "picking up sticks" at 72; moving is a 'life point' alongside with losing one's job or a loved one. 3 'points' is generally the limit per year; I've lost 4 friends and relatives who passed soon after moving which probably antagonizes pre-existing medical conditions in one's dotage. Having slept imperviously alongside a Freightliner's roaring 290 Cummins fuel-squeezer for 3 years at night (for heat orAC) and 2 2AM quakes in my present abode; I'll keep my Whack-a-squirrel nightowl ass right where it's been for 33 years. :arrgh!:

It would seem The 80 year old world leaders have completely forgotten their youth and what they were protesting about. It's an Awakening today just how devious getting old can turn you to the greed side.

Apparently ol' John couldn't "imagine" life with no possessions. His net worth was around $200 million ($620 million in today's money) before he was murdered. It wouldn't surprise me if he carried a picture of chairman Mao.

I just love it when rich people tell me I don't need anything. Like when Bono sang that "what you don't have you don't need it now", or when Bradley Nowell told everyone to "take a tip from me, take all of your money, give it all to charity". Those are easy things to say when you don't want for anything.

I much prefer Daniel Johns' take: "You say that money, isn't everything, But I'd like to see you live without it".

Apologies for the hijack - but this is [obviously] a bit of a sore spot with me.

Guten Morgen mein Heron :)

Went fishing again this morning. These two here, a Great Blue Heron and a Willet always come around when I show up. Because they know I have treats!

Never thought to give them names. But I do talk to them and call them little beggars, especially the Willet he waits around close to me like like a dog looking for scraps. The Heron however as soon as he sees me take a fish out of the cooler I get this feeling he’s ready to go a few rounds and fight me for it. He’s very much a wild animal with an intense look in his eyes.

The bait on the cooler was for my hook. The Heron will not be denied he just waltzed right up and snatched it. I wasn’t going to argue he’s got a big beak and talons that could do some damage. He can have it.
