Dirty great wood pigeon came down the chimney today. Luckily there's a big fireguard covers the fireplace in, so Moira soon had a hold of him and he just shed a few feathers as he flew off. Why wasn't he covered in soot, I wondered. We had a proper chimney sweep for the first time last year, so he must've done a good job.

Was a bit surprised this morning to notice that bees have taken residence in the wall mounted box at the rear of the property usually reserved for Blue Tits but it is interesting to see the drone bees hard at work.

I'll be letting them get on with life unmolested unless they turn their attention on the family pet dog when he is doing his regular rounds.

Went to a jam session. Played some music. Talked to a few other players. Had a good time.

Leaving for home I turned left out of the parking lot...across a median divider I didn't see, accelerating quickly. Right front tire shredded. Drove it a couple of miles until I finally found a parking lot with enough light to change the tire by. Spare tire is under the car. Loosened the nut holding it in place, per the manual. Wouldn't come off. I suspect it's been hanging there since the car was new. Drove the car to a repair shop I'm familiar with. Rather than sleep in the car I left it there and walked home.

Now it's 0400 in the a.m., and I'm waiting to take the bus back down there when they open at 0800. Needless to say I haven't been to bed. I only hope the rim isn't bent, but I won't be surprised if it is. I'll know for sure in just three more hours.

Wicked stuff first noted by Magellan's officer Pigafetta in 1523 in his detailed account of the Magellan expedition. Lambanog is a very clean-tasting spirit, with a subtle, sweet finish. This gives it plenty of versatility in cocktails, since you can pretty much pair it with anything you want. Try it with citrus or lychee juices, for sweet, but potent mixes. Its clean taste also makes it perfect for infusions. Traditionally, Lambanog is steeped with either raisins or prunes to give it a sweeter flavor. With the variety of fruits we have, the types of infusions you can do are endless. For the enterprising barkeep and the alcohol gourmand, feel free to experiment. It’s easy. Place Lambanog in a mason jar, steep your favorite fruit in it, and delight your guests with an apéritif you made yourself. He fought beside Ferdinand Magellan at the failed amphibious assault on the village of Lapo Lapo So we continued to retire for more than a good crossbow flight from the shore always fighting up to our knees in the water. The natives continued to pursue us, and picking up the same spear four or six times, hurled it at us again and again. Recognizing the captain, so many turned upon him that they knocked his helmet off his head twice, but he always stood firmly like a good knight, together with some others. Thus did we fight for more than one hour, refusing to retire farther. An Indian hurled a bamboo spear into the captain's face, but the latter immediately killed him with his lance, which he left in the Indian's body. Then, trying to lay hand on sword, he could draw it out but halfway, because he had been wounded in the arm with a bamboo spear. When the natives saw that, they all hurled themselves upon him. One of them wounded him on the left leg with a large cutlass, which resembles a scimitar, only being larger. http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/images/magellan5.jpg That caused the captain to fall face downward, when immediately they rushed upon him with iron and bamboo spears and with their cutlasses, until they killed our mirror, our light, our comfort, and our true guide. When they wounded him, he turned back many times to see whether we were all in the boats. Thereupon, beholding him dead, we, wounded, retreated, as best we could, to the boats, which were already pulling off." <Jeeze! now I need a drink! Methinks I'll combine the best of both worlds: the Gimlet with 1/4 lime, 1oz. Rose's lime water and 3 oz. Lambanog in place of gin or vodka and see how it goes.:Kaleun_Cheers: One good thing leads to another apparently:The Manila galleons sailed the Pacific for 250 years, bringing in to Mexico their cargoes of luxury goods, economic benefits and cultural exchange. Filipino sailors aboard the Manila galleons, brought portable stills that were used to make coconut nectar-based lambanog. The stills were a huge hit in Mexico, but due to unfamiliarity and the risks involved in harvesting coconut nectar, the native population quickly turned to agave by applying the craft learned from the Filipino sailors. (hence Tequila):yeah: Well damn! I'll just have to have a Margarita chaser too! :D I'll B "weng-weng" after that! Filipino slang for someone who is completely intoxicated.

At 0800 yesterday I walked back down to the local auto shop and explained what had happened. Then I walked back home and spent the morning trying to stay awake after more than twenty-four hours with no sleep. At 1415 they called and said it was done. I walked back down and they said the rim was fine, the alignment is fine, and all I had to pay for was the tire and the labor.

Brought the car back home and it seems fine. Tried to get some work done but fell apart about 1600. Went straight to bed, thinking I'd be up again around midnight, but instead slept twelve hours straight through. Now it's 0500 and I feel like I'm missing a whole day. That's okay, I'm ready for this one.

I suspect You'll find retirement isn't! Someone else will see that fence and offer cash under the table(always a good thing) and a bottle of good vino! I 'retired' four years ago and am still quasi or semi employed; only now the boss (4 hundred miles away) is much nicer 'cause he knows I don't need the job. I rib him: thanking him for my social security stipend-now about to be diminished by part B medicare under Trump. The boss is paying in; I'm taking out!:D. The text message always starts with ''R U available....'' a much nicer tone than when I was simply 'rowing chained to the bench.' He knows 'sailing days' are inviolate! The big problem is: my wife is retiring in September too, after 30 years of being a DA.-totally fed-up and burned-out! Good lord! there goes my 'retirement': she'll B around all day assigning chores... alas nothing good lasts forever.:O: PS: I've seen the god-awful snow U shovel!:k_confused: that's not retirement! Wondering still why I've been unable for so long now to update or add to my albums on my Profile Page... most importantly my paintings? 6 hours of sleep? It's not enough

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=8324685

almost everyone who says he needs only six hours' sleep is kidding himself. And the consequences of chronic sleep deprivation are serious, says Clete Kushida, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and director of Stanford University's Sleep Medicine Center. Sleep deprivation has been linked to an increase in motor vehicle accidents, deficiencies in short-term memory, focus and attention. It's also tied to depressed mood and a decrease in the ability to control appetite.

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/poor-sleep-linked-higher-death-risk-heart-issues/story?id=47620102

Poor sleep is linked to higher death risk in those with heart issues

Diseases of the blood vessels supplying the heart and brain tissues are leading causes of death among Americans.

And while researchers have known that things like metabolic syndrome -- high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and/or triglycerides, high body mass index and high blood sugar -- and poor sleep increase the risk of these diseases, the true impact of these other factors has remained poorly understood so far.

You too Steve ... get that sleep

Oh my god Mr Squirrel you've got squirrel Rabies, there's a foolproof way to test for this disease old boy, keep a glass of water close to hand or paw in your case and look at it regularly, if you've got rabies it'll start to drive you nuts. The doctor should have told you that there and then the silly mare, she probably wanted rid of you asap so I can't really blame her, If the doctor was ugly though I'd report her to the RSPCA immediately.

If the test is positive don't panic as it can only kill you once, it would be adviseable to get everyone you've been near vaccinated and get yourself locked in a darkened room at once and throw the key away. Its imperative that you keep out of sight or sound of water as that will increase the symptoms exponentially, oh one final thing Mr Squirrel, make sure that all the local squirrels are vaccinated as well, we can't have a major outbreak of rabies flooding the country when Wimbledon is just around the corner now can we.

One last thing Mr Squirrel, its going to be a long and slow painful death so I'll say my good riddance byes now, silly me I nearly forgot, that'll be £50 for my medical services payable before you're locked up in that darkened room of course. :yep:

I told him I couldn't do it but knew someone else who was reliable and might be interested so I rang a friend.

About an hour later said friend rang me, thanked me and said he owed me a bottle.

I said fair enough but even at £120 a shift it wasn't all that big a deal.

My friend replied saying he had renegotiated the offer to £15 an hour and I said "You'd better make that a couple of bottles then" :o

^NAH you're the man for the job given your ex-law enforcement driving skills etc. Parents tend to be too easy going; I (ex-trucker, UPS man, squadcar etc) took mine (an only child-so I can't afford to lose one:k_confused:) over a nasty stretch known as Oakville Grade while she was also basic training at the local driving school. Complete with 12 miles of mountain curves, steep grades, and 'S' 180 turns-in both directions!!! Constant speed monitoring, use of gears downshift and absolute alertness on no-shoulder cliffside lanes for long control descent...everything! The poor lass complained to her pitiless mom (who's own daddy owned a truck company) and her driving school what 'daddy was doing' : the school responded: "GOOD!":O: After she reasonably completed the route in both directions (in my '86 Camry), I congratulated her on passing my driving course!:o A year later when up in Oregon at college, my daughter-just home for Christmas-confessed "dad you were right... all the roads are like that up here. I'm the only one I trust to do the (designated ) driving.!" One of the few arguments I've won: now all the neighbors take their own beginner kids up the Grade to do the same thing. :Kaleun_Salute:

Done! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTdZtLcjmY8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTdZtLcjmY8) < what the mazda is doing I do in a 5 speed stick Corolla but that's not for novices. I've been using the road for 30 years for commutes in all conditions.. Deer, road washouts, and clouds/ fog are particular hazards as are fallen redwoods. Twice Truckers have clogged the 'S' curves with their 18 wheelers, for several hours, requiring a wrecker and first responder me to divert local traffic. That boo-boo goes with citations for crossing one-lane weight-limit bridges. Their GPS's mislead them into believing it's a passable route.! I use the DryCreek-Oakville Grade-Trinity Rd route to get from Napa Hwy 29 to Santa Rosa bound Hwy 12; a steep climb and descent in both directions. Good training for my sojourns to Ireland and recently Scotland's Isle of Skye! https://www.yelp.com/map/oakville-grade-road-st-helena (https://www.yelp.com/map/oakville-grade-road-st-helena) < it even looks bad on the map:wah: Caterham $even in the 30K-$70K range??!! :k_confused:http://www.2040-cars.com/Lotus/Super-Seven/ (http://www.2040-cars.com/Lotus/Super-Seven/)

Caterham $even in the 30K-$70K range??!! :k_confused:

The Lotus Seven is going to be more expensive than the Caterham version most likely. One could probably source a roller kit much cheaper and then all it requires is some elbow grease and a spare engine/transmission. :03: Among other things of course.

what is the state pension 'triple lock' guarantee?

The triple lock was a guarantee to increase the state pension every year by the higher of inflation, average earnings or a minimum of 2.5%.
It was introduced to protect pensioners from meaningless increases in the state pension, such as the 75p a week rise in 2000, and to make sure their income was not eroded by the gradual increase in the cost of living.

Recovering from running a precinct in our primaries yesterday. Sore and stiff. 17 hour day, mostly on my feet.

But we had over 13% voter participation which is saying a lot for a state primary. I have had primaries with a 1% voter turnout.

We had almost 400 people show up. The fact that it was a dual primary probably helped.

Maybe, slowly, the voters are learning that primaries can be important.

Out at the rear of the property and heard the door bell ring, took fifteen seconds at most to reach the front door and the postman had left a card to say my parcel (containing two choppers I had on pre-order) couldn't be delivered so I would need to travel into town tomorrow to pick it up from the central pst office.

Then off to the boat marina to repair the essential depth gauge for tomorrow's sail; it's been operating intermittently of late. ^ The Boss lady appreciates all her :subsim: well-wishers; and has taken the day off: announcing we are driving to Sacramento to pick apricots for her to make jam with. I hope we beat the heat but I have my doubts about the interior part of the state. We already made raspberry jam from our own raspberry bushes-a big treat as the neighbors like her old style canning jars. My 60+ idea of lunch is still Skippy peanut butter and homemade raspberry jam!:yeah: The one neighbor's apricot tree is not producing fruit this year, so the trip to an orchard, 40 miles away, is apparently in order!:k_confused: Another neighbor's orange tree provides the fruit for her marmalade! I have 'gleaning privileges' in the 'hood otherwise it just gets wasted. Her Spaghetti sauce from our tomatoes, with meat, is also a big hit... alongside tomato paste, beans and sweet corn. Much of the garage shelving is for her finished canning products.

Beretta and Colt's Python oiled and primed; off to range for 4th bi-annual shoot to qualify for state's open carry card combine with my guard license; makes me good for two years more. Coming up on 44 years of this toil!:dead: The state has tightened down severely in 2017: No longer will I be permitted a 15 round mag which had been 'grandfathered in' to gun owners of such weapons-since '94 in my case. All magazines for non-peace officers must be ten rounds as of 7/1. I have one but getting ten rounds into it is a major pain. Additionally, background checks(not a real biggie for me actually as the CCW conceal permit paperwork is extensive) will also be now required to simply buy ammunition...so I'd better stock up on the staples...or go to Reno, Nevada gun shows to avoid the paperwork. My favorite two gunshops in town simply gave up after 25+ years as the rules are steadily getting prohibitive... I have often wondered about what is legal in purchase of a quality weapon in the State of Nevada. So you say you can drive to Reno and purchase a 9 shot Italian semi auto shot gun put it in the trunk and drive home to California or Utah or Arizona or even Oregon (but you may have to cross CA state line to get to Oregon.

What happens if you get stopped and all you have is a cash registrar receipt? Will they confiscate the car and or the weapon? Should you rent a car in case of the worst?

I don't think there is a universal size rating system jim, seems too me the makers make up their own size charts. Example I bought a shirt from one place fit well and loose then bought another brand shirt else where with the same size as the first and it was tight.

I now try to stick to one place for my shirts as I know the size I want fits and same with other cloths, bit of a pain when you see what you want cheaper else where but the big question will it fit.

...or Utah...
Not a problem here. Utah's gun laws are just as open as Nevada's.

As to transporting a gun in California, the law specifies that you may do so, but the firearm must be locked In a case in the trunk of the car and no ammunition available. The presumption seems to be that "transporting" means you are taking it out of the state, or just passing through. Long guns and shotguns do not have to be locked in a case, but still must be in the trunk with no ammunition available.

Thank you for that answer Steve ... Aktungbby decided to ignore the questions. When I purchased my hand gun a Tarsus 44special for $350 the gun shop said that I could carry it in the trunk and ammunition in a safe place in the car or truck as long as it was separate from the gun locked in the trunk. Like a ammo box perhaps. Like for for when you go to a target range for target practice.

On the wall behind it was a beautiful black short barrel Italian extra capacity semi-automatic shot gun for $750. I wanted it so bad, but no where to keep it, plus the money is needed for other things.

So that's why I asked about Reno, but how does a person keep his or her discipline and not try to win some money at the tables and wind up paying twice what they would've of for the gun and ammunition in the first place?

Oh by the way all of this comes under the title "What are you going to do in real life":yep:

Some officers simply correct your transportation error-they're usually gun-buffs too- and separate the ammo from the weapon; (that happened to me enroute to a target range once) others will arrest to show pro-active 'milling about smartly' on their log sheet to superiors. I personally keep stuff in locking briefcases in the trunk...and always keep my hands on the wheel when stopped on a routine traffic violation, even on the job, in full gear-armed with the permits, and have witnessed differences of procedural opinion between pairs of officers. Fortunately, in my case, the additional CCW prevails and the firearm matter is dropped after ten minutes of discussion as not worthy for a judge's attention....but not the speeding ticket!:O: https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/agweb/pdfs/firearms/pdf/cfl2016.pdf (https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/agweb/pdfs/firearms/pdf/cfl2016.pdf) (2016 rules: pg. 6)

I thought he was going to use something like my alternative theory on the dinosaur extinction event, anyway I'll let you subsimmers in on it first before I publish it in a not so insignificant science journal that I avidly read.

I believe that the dinosaur extinction level event was not caused by a meteorite hitting the earth but was caused by a large group of brontosaurs having a competition to see who could break wind the loudest, I know it sounds a bit far out but no one has been able to prove the theory wrong as yet. :D
Just at that exact moment an earthquake and a volcano erupted at the same time and with all that gas released by the dinosaurs and the earthquake it was inevitable that it would be ignited by all that hot ash from the volcano blast, it would have exploded as though 1000s of nuclear missiles had gone off at the same time.

Me thinks it will be proven true when we eventually develop time travel, just think about it lads I'll be that famous some one will travel to our present age and whisk us, (I say us because you're going to witness it as well) to a few moments before the big event occurred, how's that for a theory then?.

It seems a San Diego federal judge, Roger Benitez, has blocked the law set to take effect today with a Thursday preliminary injunction:...ruling the new law on 15 round mags takes away gun owners Second Amendment rights and amounts to seizing private property without compensation. "Allowing the law to take effect would have given thousands of law-abiding citizens an untenable choice: become an outlaw or disposses one's self of lawfully acquired property." Attorney General, Xavier Becerra's office is now developing new legislation to allow registration starting in 2018....I'd settle for that reasonable solution. Had the ban taken effect I'd have had to turn the ( three)items into law enforcement agencies or destroy them. The process of California gun lawmaking is despicable imho; the Office of Administrative Law has said Becerra has "gone too far trying to impose the new regulations without allowing for public comment" (which I'm currently doing...here 'Merica!):D :subsim:

Got back from a hot walk around Lincoln City. We almost didn't get there: I came round a bend near Wrangle and there was a car right in front... coming our way! I hit the brakes and got the nose onto the hard-shoulder just as this bastard managed to pull in front of the van he was overtaking.

Anyway later, walking up towards the bottom of Steep Hill in the City, I started instinctively to clench my fists ready for a punch-up as I felt someone barge into the back of me then start clawing at my shirt and pants. I spun round and there was Moira, face down on the pavement. I even thought for a moment "Who is this strange woman, I better help her up" as lots of other nice folk closed in from all around, offering to get her a drink and a chair and stuff. She's fine, though... said she didn't hit her head, just lost bits from her bracelet (lucky it wasn't some teeth).

@ Aktung: Basil leaves :o:
Well, maybe, just maybe i will try this out :03:

My receipt, ymmv:

1 lime fruit, cut in 8 parts
8-10 orange mint leaves (also from the garden here)
(never use peppermint, you'll find out why lol, some use spearmint but not me - don't like it)
1 barspoon of brown cane sugar
2 cl cane sugar 'bar syrup'
1,5 cl lime juice
4 cl rum Havana club white (or s.t. similar)
2 cl rum Barceló or (or ron Amazonas dolce, for colour and taste)
fill up with soda, but let room for
crushed ice

And this is why i do not only take powderered sugar:
Put the mint leaves in a glass, add the brown sugar, add lime juice and the syrup, add rum.
Then take a spoon or a muddler and gently press the leaves against the corny sugar, so the aromes will get into the fluid, but not the bitter leave substance. Do not "shred" the leaves for same reason.

I like the crusta rim, never tried that on a mojito because i use a straw, but will try this

Currently sweating on two very expensive bids on models over on evilbay which are due to come to a conclusion whilst I'm at work tonight.

I hate not being in control and leaving matters to guesswork.

Is that ebay in UK or overseas?

Do you take up a collection? Wear a hat :)
Nah, it was a family party for our lead guitarist's late aunt. We did it gratis. The food was good, though.

In the UK. I was successful with both bids and am now a little over £500 the poorer.

If you've gotta have it you must pay the price :o

Not long back from the dentist, mouth frozen, drooping upper lip and two fewer teeth.

Impressions taken for partial dentures and a relieved wife and daughter.

Father should have no problems smiling for the wedding photographs now but little do they realise I now run the risk of my dentures falling out whilst in the middle of my wedding speech :)

Back in the old days of trains gone by ... the train use to pick up a bag of mail at a train station without even slowing down.

So I got to wondering if the train ever missed a mail bag ... here's the answer: https://postalmuseum.si.edu/rms/life/mail.html

“The night was coal black, and it was awkward holding onto the mail sack with one hand, the other on the crossbar . . . watching for the faint glow of the light on the crane. . . . The wind tried to steal your breath away. . . . There was both relief and satisfaction when I heard the 'whing' of the pouch as it was snatched.” —L. E. Davis, RPO Clerk

As early as 1865, before the arrival of mail cranes, mail was exchanged on nonstop trains, but to do so, engineers had to slow trains down to a crawl so clerks could exchange the mail by hand. This system, both inefficient and dangerous, was soon scrapped. The first track side Railway Mail Service cranes were wooden, F-shaped, mechanisms. They were soon replaced by a simple steel hook and crane.

As tremendously successful as it was, mail “on-the-fly" still had its share of glitches. Clerks had to pay special attention to raising the train's catcher arm. If they hoisted it too soon, they risked hitting switch targets, telegraph poles or semaphores which would rip the catcher arm right off the train. Too late, and they would miss an exchange. Each missed exchange would net a clerk five demerits.

Missed exchanges were a special threat on a handful of eastern runs that had less than a minute between some exchanges. On single line tracks, mail cranes could appear on either side, and woe be the new clerk who, alertly looking out the right-hand side of the train, missed a series of mail cranes on the left-hand side. Experienced clerks on board night mail trains relied on the sound or "feel" of the tracks, knowing by the train's speed or the curves of the track how far away they were from a mail crane.

Exchanging the mail was a two-part process, after the clerk snagged the mail bag with the catcher arm, he had to toss out that station’s mailbag. If a clerk did not kick the mailbag out far enough, it could get trapped beneath the wheels of the train, bursting open and sending letters flying everywhere. The clerks called such small disasters "snowstorms." On the other hand, too much "oomph" could also be a problem. One poor clerk tossed the mailbag out with such force that it sailed through the bay window of the station house. Another kicked off his shoe along with the bag.

Has anyone seen Aktungbby lately? Doesn't he guard ATM builds?

Man gets stuck in ATM and slips 'help me' notes through receipt slot

A repairman changing out the lock of an ATM was stuck inside the room that houses it -- and was forced to slip notes asking for help through the cash dispenser's receipt slot.

Just got home from an amazing night out. Our drummer has been telling us for several weeks that the band he played with for years was going to be in town for one night. He insisted that we all come, and that we bring our guitars.

We showed up. The house band played a set, then announced the travelling show. They played for awhile. Then they had us come up and do three songs. The rest of the night involved the house band backing up several players and singers. Everybody had a great time, and it was quite an experience.

Afterward the members of the house band, who were quite good by the way, all said they were coming to hear us next Friday night when we play our own show. The leader of the travelling band, who our drummer used to play for, came to us afterwards and asked if we had a business card. We did, and he took several. He then asked for a copy of our CD. It seems he hosts a late-night radio show three times a week, and wants to play some of our stuff. He also is closely associated with a booking agency, and wants them to come hear us as well.

Something good might actually come from this.

Oh, and afterwards I also got to talk to several top-notch musicians, who also thought our band was great.

Now it's approaching 0400 hours and I can't sleep.
