My Boss died of a stroke. :(
Never good to learn of such things but take the positives, start looking after yersel more, it could have been closer to home.
I always think that way when someone in my peer group passes away.

Problem was Jim he was in good health, you just don't know when these things hit. Never the less it makes you think about yourself. Well as I suspected mix motions of shock and acceptance at work with a heavy fill in the air. And after work walking home I had to divert around a RTA!
Watch out UK trouble is on its way..
Looks like the North is going to get the big hit so shore up your fences and get those bins strapped down.

Just a few more days ... isn't that where two 747's met each other on the runway? :o
Probably a lot safer now, uh? :yep:
On March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747 passenger jets, KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736, collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport), on the Spanish island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, killing 583 people in the deadliest accident in aviation history.
I sure hope so.
Been to Tenerife a couple of times since the above but next week our chosen destination is Gran Canaria.

Probably a lot safer now, uh? :yep::nope:
I sure hope so.
Been to Tenerife a couple of times since the above but next week our chosen destination is Gran Canaria. GROUND FOG, LACK OF GROUND TAXI RADAR, A BOMB THREAT TO GRAN CANARIAS WHICH DIVERTED BOTH AIRCRAFT TO (overburdened) TENERIFE AND A LACK OF NOW-REQUIRED COCKPIT CREW-DYNAMIC COOPERATION NOTWITHSTANDING: ONE PRIMARY CAUSE WAS THE 5 second RADIO TRAFFIC HETERODYNE SQUEAL FROM TOO MANY KEYED MIKES(3) CAUSING THE KLM PILOT TO MISS A CRITICAL TRANSMISSION THAT THE RUNWAY WAS NOT CLEAR... Sounds on the CVR suggested that during the accident the Spanish control tower crew had been listening to afootball (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_football) match on the radio and may have been distracted.
The transmission from the tower in which the controller passed KLM their ATC clearance was ambiguous and could have been interpreted as also giving take-off clearance. In support of this part of their response, the Dutch investigators pointed out that Pan Am's messages "No! Eh?" and "We are still taxiing down the runway, the Clipper 1736!" indicated that captain Grubbs and first officer Bragg had recognised the ambiguity (this message was not audible to the control tower or KLM crew due to simultaneous cross-communication);
The Pan Am had taxied beyond the third exit. Had the plane turned at the third exit as instructed, the collision would not have occurred.... https://aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/36074/is-there-a-solution-to-radio-interference (https://aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/36074/is-there-a-solution-to-radio-interference) The radio cross communication heterodyne problem still exists. http://www.askthepilot.com/shorttakes/bob-bragg/ (http://www.askthepilot.com/shorttakes/bob-bragg/) Oddly a similar situation arose on Friday while sailing. Someone had left a radio somewhere in the greater Bay Area open on channel 16, the universal Coast Guard emergency/advisory channel; making a timely response to any vessel in distress problematic. The situation lasted all afternoon with constant static on a channel normally kept meticulously clear by the CG. As on our boat, each crewman carries a personal radio in his flotation vest's pouch(note antennahttp://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?pictureid=8803&albumid=815&dl=1495331933&thumb=1 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/album.php?albumid=815&pictureid=8803)) pocket, and there is one affixed to the boat as well. An open mike implies a worst case scenario of someone, perhaps in the water...having gone over board; unable to speak but trying... so the situation is inherently serious.
EDIT: THE 'HETERODYNE' ISSUE IS STILL A PROBLEM.... I JUST CHECKED WITH MY COLLEGE TEAMMATE WHO RETIRED AS A DELTA CAPTAIN THIS YEAR. :hmmm:

Moira's become really bad at remembering to send birthday cards lately (usually those for my family). Last week she told me she'd forgotten to send one to my brother-in-law, and yesterday she told me she also just forgot my sister-in-law.
So this afternoon I went to TESCO to get a Belated Birthday card for her, and (would you believe it) they didn't have any! By now I was so furious with the world that I bought a Sorry You Are Leaving card, crossed out the "You Are Leaving" and scrawled underneath "Moira Forgot Your Birthday". Then inside, beneath where it said "We wish you well", I added "And we hope you get a birthday card on time next year".

I used to have an interesting issue of "The Fortean Times" (no. 82, I think). It was all about the Golem of Prague and Nazi flying saucers. I was always reading it and I used to then stuff it under a sofa cushion, but Moira hated me doing that. "What's this doing here again?" she'd ask. Well I can never find it now... I'm sure she threw it away. I can just never find it anywhere. She just told me again that she didn't throw it out. I said I'll keep on asking until she admits it, even unto my deathbed... "Maybe you'll tell me then", I said.
Has anyone here got that issue?

YIPES! While enduring a three hour contract signing session at my dining table to finalize the 2 month-long remodeling of my bathrooms with my same contractor who redid the kitchen, I casually & innocently joked '' Hey! no attending open air concerts till the job is finished... I need U alive!"...Whoops: he suddenly got real serious and pulled out his smart phone :https://cbsnews3.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2017/10/05/edb8eb79-82d2-4ae0-8455-812d83ba1e71/resize/620x/9027d9c852b089353d44dd92da3cc89e/gettyimages-856494684.jpg#....Of his brother George being pushed to safety by a heroic off duty nurse. Major kudos to the unarmed hotel guard, Jésus Campos, who was wounded in the thigh in a hail of 200 rounds through the closed door, but probably distracted the gunman's attention away from his harmful intent.:timeout: After being shot, Campos spoke with police officers at 10:18 p.m., giving them the shooter's exact room and key pass.
"His bravery was amazing because he remained with our officers, providing them the key pass to access the door and continued to help them clear rooms until our officers demanded he seek medical attention," said Lombardo Clark County Undersheriff Kevin McMahill also commended the security guard as "very heroic."
When asked why he thought Paddock stopped shooting at concertgoers, McMahill said Tuesday he believed Paddock's attention had been diverted as he fired at the security guard :Kaleun_Salute: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2017/10/04/09/4500F5BC00000578-4944234-image-a-18_1507106379985.jpg

I saw that image on the news, wow! What a strange moment that must have been. Yes the security guard should get free everything for life in Vegas ... The shooter must have thought they were going to barge into the room right away and shot himself in the mouth with a small pistol he had re severed for that moment.

http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/864536/La-palma-tenerife-gran-canaria-volcano-threat-earthquake-warning
FEARS of a volcano erupting on the Canary Islands has sparked panic as the Spanish archipelago was hit by more than 40 earthquake tremors in just 48 hours.
The La Palma Volcano on the Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa has experienced 40 earthquakes in the last 48 hours, giving rise to concerns the volcano may erupt. If an eruption takes place, something scientists have long feared may also happen: The west side of the Volcano will blow-off into the Atlantic Ocean, sending a Tsunami into the East Coast of the U.S. 7 to 8 hours later . . . . with 90 to 160 foot waves slamming up to 12 miles inland!
Every major US City on the eastern seaboard would be completely destroyed.

^ most probably not, however if it is conected to the Internet via Lan or Wlan an automatic update sometimes (seldom) screws up something. Back to works settings and repeat update usually helps.
If it is a Samsung TV it will also transfer all you say to its masters..

It was our first trip up the river on the Nissan 9HP alone-with eleven gallons of gas we were floating bomb. The 'pants' arrived: it was a pair of Lawrence's big soft flannel pyjama shorts with pictures of skulls all over... nice. At least they were clean.
I just had to withhold a treat from his normal routine of being spoiled rotten, because he's been naughty again. I said to him a few minutes ago that I don't like having to punish him... that it doesn't mean I don't love him... but if he's naughty then I have to. "You do understand that, don't you?"... "Yes", he said. I looked at Moira and said he doesn't really... he's just saying that.

Don't know what vintage you like, but "Hidden & Dangerous 2" (plus its "Sabre Squadron" expansion) runs perfectly on Win10 for me, and is a favourite sandbox-type game with good graphics that I return to over & over for loads of fun. I run it from the disc, btw
I was also able to play "Brothers in Arms, Hell's Highway" with its more up to date graphics... although H&D's visuals are still great

I normally game on a fairly good offline tower PC which has XP installed, so this afternoon I installed on my laptop a few of what I think are the best military games likely to run on Windows 10. I'm pleased to report that they all ran perfectly well:
Call of Duty 'World at War' seems to be fine; Battlefield Bad Company 2 (superb game); Operation Flashpoint 'Dragon Rising'; Conflict 'Desert Storm II' runs fine, so I'm guessing the others in this great series will too; original Ghost Recon... also runs fine, so I expect the addons will too; Ghost Recon 'Advanced Warfighter'... a more up-to-date game than the previous series and it also looks just fine.
Hope this helps; I'll try a few more later.

A light day of sailing with the new repainted hull. Since the yard had pulled and restepped the mast to redo some electric cabling inside the mast; As a result, the mast's wire standing-rigging was a little too tight tension-wise; so using a tension gauge https://pull01-apsltd.netdna-ssl.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/small_image/170x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/s/p/sprgs0205-rig_sense.jpg (three cables on each side plus fore and aft stays) we carefully and methodically lightened the wires' tension settings. This involves de-cotterpining the turnbuckles holding the shroud wires to the deck and loosening the bolts to the desired tension using the gauge-in 'tuning the boat's wires' much like WWI airplane rigger. Bad rigging can have serious consequences. https://theriggingcompany.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/elec-furlqa_adjust-turnbuckle.jpg?w=94&h=141https://theriggingco.com/2017/01/21/how-to-tune-a-sailboat-mast/ (https://theriggingco.com/2017/01/21/how-to-tune-a-sailboat-mast/) The winds were very light, so full 150% jib and not too much pressure on the shrouds... ie the mast did not fall over! Considering we usually have a professionl rigger for this, as mast collapses can be fatal, we managed to get the job done properly.:yeah:

Me neither, pc's seem to take on a life of their own regarding what they like or dislike.
I spoke to my tech guy yesterday teatime and he reckons the processors are very similar (mines an i7), speed and capacity to multi-task being the main difference.

We didn't exactly have a manual but two guys on our quay have done this-including our live-aboard crewmate ; so it was a group effort...I'll confine myself to bicycle wheel spoke adjustments in the future. We lost a guy last year when his mast collapsed on him in a 'beer-can race'... and I always think worst case scenario!:O: Oddly, I was the one who noted the stays seemed 'awfully stiff' w/o the usual 1 in. of play when we got the boat back down the to our marina from the refit. The stays are a year old as one had frayed a while back, with a few wire strands unraveling, so we had the whole boat redone by a pro rigger.

I'm scared to death of heights but after watching a professional rigger inspect my gear, seeing the cost and not able to get a definitive answer. I decided to do it myself, forever more. Saved a buttload of money learned a lot, I always knew first hand what was going on up there too.
I had a keel stepped mast and one day I took my cap shrouds and stays down for replacement. All I had holding the mast up was the lower shrouds and the main sheet to stabilize it over night. Things went OK until I had to raise myself to the top and fasten the new stays and shrouds. Holy cow that mast swayed back and forth like a 62 foot tall blade of grass in a strong wind. That ever scared the poop outta me but I managed to persevere and stay up their. And though it was a successful I will never ever do it like that again. Next time I'll replace everything one piece at a time.
Once word got out I did this I could charge $80.00 and hour just to change a anchor light bulb.

Hi Gerald, the one I'm talking about is exactly like the one Mr. Quatro posted above. Designed by the late Doug Peterson for Jack Kelly Yachts built in 1979.
"Peterson later entered the America's Cup circle as a key design member of the winning 1992 America3 and 1995 NZL 32 Black Magic Team New Zealand design teams. In 2000, Peterson designed the winning Louis Vuitton Cup boat for Prada Challenge."
Didn't know until now that Doug had died from cancer just last year.

I'm currently limping like a good'un after coming off my cycle. It all happened when I was cycling back home after a futile visit to what is laughably called the Jobcentre. I think my front wheel hit a raised drain cover, because the next thing I know my front wheel has kicked to one side, caught the high kerb and I'm pitched off the bike with the bike following me. I landed badly on my right knee and gashed it open like a ripe melon. The nurse who treated me had a proper old-school, no-nonsense approach to patching me up, she didn't bother with anesthetic when putting 3 stitches in my knee as she said that by the time she stuck the needle in me and the numbing agent had taken effect she would have finished stitching me up. She was also pleased that I had come in with a 'proper' injury rather than "the usual coughs, colds and rubbish you could put a plaster on at home" (her exact words).

Last Tuesday my router died and it took up till yesterday to send a replacement and re-establish my connection.

Recuperating from yesterday's sail on the Bay. A little cold, overcast, and brisk to say the least...temps in the 50's! We were the only sailboat out there. Steady 10-15 knots winds from the east and the tide allowed use of the auto-tiller and the longest outing of the year, straight downwind toward the westerly approaches of greater San Pablo Bay, a portion of San Francisco Bay. Shipping and sea lions passed very close.https://geographic.org/nautical_charts/map_img/18654_1-t.png The captain, a long ham radio buff, broke out his new toy: KX2 ELECRAFT HAM RADIO and new 10' antenna on e stern rail. The static on my hearing aids was brutal !!! At 3 pm, winds dropping and tacking close-reached futile against the easterly breeze, we furled sails and motored all the way back east to the Marina ahead of the sunset; a two-hour trip with the inbound tide. The new paint job on the hull two weeks ago was worth it! -absolutely no water in the bilges! http://www.elecraft.com/KX2/kx2_large.jpg (http://www.elecraft.com/KX2/kx2.htm) <The captain had his fun until I, putting up with the horrific static in my Widex hearing-aids for 30 odd minutes, suggested 'We come out here to escape the world's racket.....!". When I have a problem you say, 'sorted' do I presume it means taken care of, right?

Is You Is or Is You Ain't?
Two weeks ago I developed a small pain in the middle left side of my back. It felt very much like when I had a tiny spot of pneumonia forty years ago. I figured I would ignore it for a few days and if it persisted I would go to the VA clinic and have it looked at.
The following Saturday it moved to my shoulder. Not spread, moved. It was no longer in my back. Two days later, Monday, it moved again, this time to my upper left arm. Two days later it suddenly grew until it was almost unbearable. I drove up to the VA Medical Center and couldn't find a place to park. Their parking garage has been under reconstruction for the last six months, and is nowhere near to being complete, so parking is catch-as-catch-can. There is Valet Parking, but I can't afford that.
Friday morning the pain was still bad so I went back up to the VA, this time at around 0600. Parking was no problem. After a while I found out that 'Valet' parking is free. You just drive up to the door and give them your keys. I checked in and they took some blood, the wheeled me into a bed in the patient intake area. Awhile later a guy came back and told me I was having a heart attack and that they needed to lower my blood pressure. He put a tab of nitroglycerine under my tongue and waited. My BP dropped. And dropped. And dropped. I was so listless by that time I could hardly understand what he was saying. He managed to get my blood pressure back up, and the heart doctors came to talk to me. They said I had an elevated enzyme that indicated heart damage. They checked me in and wheeled me up to a room in the Cardiology Floor. Out of my clothes, into pajamas, strapped into an IV with blood thinnners then finally to the lab. Angiogram time. They put the tiny tube into my right rist vein with the tiny camera that was fed up my arm, across my chest and into my heart. I slept through most of it. Then back down to my room and pretty nurse Paula, who took good care of me. Later the doctors came to tell me they wanted to do a heart stress test on Monday, so they had to keep me over the weekend. The problem was that the angiogram showed absolutely nothing wrong. Later some general (i.e. non-heart) doctors asked about the pain. When I told them it lessened when I held my arm above my head their leader said “Sounds like a pinched nerve to me”.
Saturday: I was poked an prodded some more, blood tests and injections. The only pain killer they gave me was plain old Tylenol, but it seemed to do the job just fine. They took my blood pressure on the left side all that day, saying they weren't supposed to do it on the side the angiogram went in for twenty four hours. I slept a lot, probably because of the angiogram and the drugs and the bloodletting.
Sunday: They took my blood pressure from the right side. Six hours later I had an ugly bruise on the bottom of my upper arm. Six hours after that the bruise covered my whole upper arm, top and bottom, and the underside of my lower arm as well. It's quite ugly, but doesn't hurt at all.
Monday: I missed breakfast because of the upcoming stress test. Then they didn't bring me lunch. Still no test. At around 1400, after almost twenty hours of nothing to eat or drink (not even water) the nurse brought me a “late tray”, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some chips. Then the hear doctors came and said that if the test turned out positive they would put me on blood thinners and do it again in six months. If it was negative they would probably do the same just to be on the safe side. If there was no heart trouble the medication wouldn't hurt me, unless of course I got hurt and the bleeding wouldn't stop, in which case I should get up there immediately.
So there's nothing to indicate any trouble except that one raised enzyme level, but it's a sure indicator that I “definitely had a heart attack”. Sometime. Maybe a long time ago. I asked them about the pain that brought me into the hospital in the first place. The said the two seemed to be completely unrelated, and they were heart doctors and didn't know anything about that.
Finally the Physical Therapy people said the X-rays showed some arthritis in the neck, which may be causing the problem, so keep taking Tylenol and they'll schedule an appointment. So, at 1830 last night I checked out, picked up some new pills to take and came home.
So, did I have a heart attack or not? The heart doctors insist I did, but it has nothing to do with the pain I went there for in the first place. It makes me wonder if they want it to be that, just to justify their big paychecks.
Supplement: I hadn't been on the computer for more than a couple of hours before my arm started to hurt again. As an experiment I swapped out my nice new computer chair for my old ratty-tatty one and I'm not having any pain right now. It may be because I just took a Tylenol. I'd hate to think that I went through all that because my new computer chair is junk. We'll see.

New roof and gutters on a day ahead of schedule!:yeah: the ongoing master-bath remodel apparently delayed due to tile shipment delay and other construction demands following the great Napa fire. Shower floor sealant is on to cure for three days; The new drywall is in: textured and primecoated at least. The cracked rear exterior wall still need to be re-stucco'd. Much rain-water damage to the drywall and framing/studs was discovered when the original bath was dismantled. At this rate, the planned two bath remodel will go well past Christmas. We are camped in a spare room and the garage/laundry is total carpenter workshop! The cars are parked outside for the duration. So, Christmas cards all done and mailed....off to sail the Bay in somewhat brisk 60 degree weather today.:Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

One of the most popular, and least expensive, 30-foot cruiser-racers ever built, but there are some trade-offs.
The Catalina 30 may well be the most successful 30' cruiser-racer ever made. Since the Catalina 30
went into production in 1974, output has been steady, and thousands have been built.

Actually, having lived in a Freightliner for three years-logging 350 days a year on the road-a home life indeed-, neither a house nor a boat are particularly pleasing; either one is a 'hanger queen'. the house at least is a sound portfolio investment in California, while a boat is an outright cash-flow extravagance. Both my mom and my grandfather had boats on Long Island Sound in Connecticut, so its a family tradition which I maintain by crewing aboard older gentlemen's toys as a crewman at least once a week in all conditions. Only one other of 9 cousins sails and he is a renowned HobieCat racer. The owners, at 70+, shouldn't be out alone on the water; and I'm still capable of scrambling to-and-fro on pitching decks: raising and lowering the sails, whiskerpoles, capstans, winches and fending off in the marina's tight berthing maneuvers; while they are secure in the cockpit.http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx22/aktungbby/b%204%20themast_zpswebmvs5g.jpeg < the view from my halyard station) A 25 foot Catalina with very tight foot space is sufficient for a 66 year-old's scrambling around. Five more feet would add to difficulty in our shallow (but cheap at $250 a month) marina and ininboard engine is a pain: a faulty out-board goes to the shop with little fuss, and creates less apertures (prop-shaft) in the always leaking hull!:k_confused:The most important equipment on board is the bilge-pump...and three coats of new hull paint...$3000! :O:http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx22/aktungbby/DSC_1812_zpsm0fwr7ug.jpeg

At Sunday's rehearsal we tried out a new member. A keyboard player. Female. Mara was with a band we did shared shows with a couple of times. They broke up. She likes our music. She picked right up on several of our songs, and we quickly learned a couple of hers. She plays well, she sings well, and she harmonizes well. The only potential drawback is that we work hard and rehearse twice a week with a vocal practice minus the drummer on a third day. She is a bit more laid back than that. She also is talking to another group who do more upscale indy-type music, which she is also into.
What comes of it all remains to be seen.

With the plethora of embarrassing street names around the country - Fanny Hands Lane in Ludford, Lincolnshire; Turkey Cock Lane, Colchester; and Slag Lane, Warrington are just three - some of Bell End’s residents remain philosophical on the matter.

She said there were some lovely colours including a really nice grey which would've been ideal for a rustic shawl... but she's just made one of those. She said maybe she could use it to crochet a cowl, or even a jumper... although despite it being a very good price, that might take anything up to five balls and it could then begin to look like a very expensive jumper.
I asked her why she was telling me all this.
I asked her why she was telling me all this.Don't go there, what goes on a women's mind is a unsolved mystery to this day. :yep:

A women's mind is a funny place, especially when she's in the mood to shop for shoes ... :D

A friend stopped by with a bottle of grog for me tonight; he's been laid off at work, so it wasn't my usual brand. Things have been pretty slow for me too lately, so a story he told me about some friends of his gave me an idea for a business we could maybe both go into and make lots of money.
These friends of my friend carefully giftwrap empty boxes before every Christmas, and if one of their kids is bad on the run-up they toss one of these 'presents' into the log-burner... it's so cruel isn't it? But after I'd finished laughing, I said to him why not giftwrap a few cheap toys from the thrift-shop, bundle them up with a piece of four-by-two and sell them as Christmas "Naughty Boy" kits... when one of the kids is naughty, Dad takes a box outside and pounds it to dust with the piece of wood? Can't fail, can it?

Aside from the above;
Doubting Eichs new adventure re:smashing kids presents, seems like a no win situation to me. Kid behaves bad you smash his/her present, kid behaves like a saint in a click of the finger, you have to replace said smashed presents :hmmm:
@Quatro
Your fascination with womens shoes worries me !!!
