Interesting week. It seems that all the things that insisted on going wrong are suddenly going right again. They've stopped putting bandages on the swelling all through my legs and are going to start a body-wrap treatment that kneads the fluid, moving it around. This will go on for an hour a day, I'll have 22 hours of wearing the wraps like bandages, and one hour in which I won't wear any bandages, allowing me time to take a shower.

Last December I had a cataract removed from from my eye. They were supposed to take out the other two weeks later, but the first wouldn't refused to heal properly. Now the Ophthalmologist, my regular Doctor, the Diabetes Nurse and the Liver Specialist are all ganging up on me saying "That Cataract has to come out now!" So pretty soon my second cataract is finally getting done.

There is no way to measure exactly what's wrong with the Liver, but other functions are affected. A couple of days ago the Liver Specialist told me how much better my kidneys are doing.

Add in the fact that it's easier to climb the stairs and overall things are looking up. My sister will be glad to know that it no longer looks like I can plan on dying next month.

Everything seemed in order so I reset the alarm and secured the property them promptly retired back into bed.

No. It never gets that bad. There was a lot of activity though yesterday down at the local yacht club. There could be wind gusts of 75 mph, a lot of rain and a storm surge. We are up pretty high so that's not a problem. Might lose power which would be a problem for the sump pump but it's been very dry here so the water table is low.

Living so close to the finish line and most of the roads in the immediate area being closed until 4pm usually sees the wife and I sitting in the rear garden watching the Red Arrows performing but sadly they aren't appearing this year so we have had to make do with watching the Press and Police helicopters instead.

Thanks Jim. The worst is over and we did ok. Lots of people have no power but ours stayed on. It was a scary event. As the system approched Nova Scotia it was supposed to downgrade to a tropical storm. Instead it remained a cat 1 and almost reached cat 2 status. My son who lives in Halifax has been without power now since yesterday. A tree in his backyard fell on the fence I built. Dang. They are all safe so that's all that matters. He just texted his Mom and said he was cooking breakfast on the BBQ. Boy's gotta eat. :O:

I've held off saying anything because there's some weird and quirky juju going on in my life. Whereas I was beset by all sorts of ailments over the last several months, I don't know what's related to what. Probably everything is related to everything. It's just all so strange.

First, the diarrhea. The GI Doctor had me start taking a pill at bedtime to go with the one in the morning and the eight Loperamide (Imodium) I take throughout the day. At the same time the Diabetes Nurse had me stop taking a weekly injection whose main side effect is, you guessed it, diarrhea. Also at the same time I started drinking Protein Shakes and eating high-protein foods. A week later, for the first time in years, the diarrhea was gone. Stopped. Disappeared completely. Which of the three caused it? Which combination? All of them? Unfortunately my blood sugars are way up again. What caused that? Same questions, and no answers so far.

Second, the Leg Swelling. The sores on my legs are gone, so they stopped the weekly leg-wraps. The swelling specialist had been using Farrow Wraps on my left leg. They handed me over to him and he put one on the right leg as well. A week later both calfs were normal, which is great but doesn't help the thighs, which were still massively swollen.

I've previously mentioned that the pump suit had come but the trainer/specialist was just leaving town for two weeks. Two weeks later she was back and came to my apartment. She set up the suit and had me tear it down and put it together until I was comfortable doing it and could get it right. Then she put me in the suit, turned it on and then left. An hour later (it runs in one-hour cycles) it was done and I took it off. I expected that I should do this every day, and keep wearing the Farrow Wraps all day long, at least until the new Compression Socks came.

The doctor has ordered custom socks just for me. His last few sessions partly consisted of him measuring everything imaginable on my feet and legs. They are being made in Germany and should be here any day.

Then something funny happened. The next day the swelling was gone. All of it. Feed, ankles, calfs, thighs, even my lower stomach. Don't know why. I experimented myself by not wearing the Farrow Wraps. In the last two weeks I've used the pump suit three times. That's it. No wraps, no compression socks. Nothing but those three sessions with the pump. The swelling seems to be completely gone.

Third, the weight. When I suddenly had extra swelling and a huge weight gain they removed a lot of "water" (lymphatic fluid) from my stomach, resulting in a twelve-pound weight loss. Unfortunately most of it came back and two weeks later I looked worse that ever. They repeated the process, and this time I lost fourteen pounds, ending up at 197. That's when the swelling started to go away, and may also have been a contributing factor. I kept losing weight over the next several weeks. I've kept a running record of the whole process, and right now I weigh 155. Some of that is still water, hence the protein regimen. I'm taking two different diuretics (water pills), plus Potassium to counter the loss of that mineral that goes with water loss.

Fourth, the eyes. They've decided to go ahead with the cataract surgery on the left eye. After waiting ten months they're finally fixing the other one. The only bad news is that I had decided to go the split-vision route, with one eye set to regular distance and the other set for reading, thus avoiding the need to carry a pair of reading glasses everywhere I go. I told them that since the first surgery until the other cataract got too bad I have done quite well with having split-vision. He said the problem isn't whether I can read or not, it's physical. My left eye is still showing complications (swelling, bleeding etc) that could cause me to lose the eye. For this reason they don't want to use split-vision. We'll see how it goes.

So, several problems have suddenly gotten better, and in all cases more than one change has been made so nobody is sure exactly what caused the improvement in each one. Hopefully we'll figure it out. Meanwhile I'll see my personal Provider and the Diabetes Nurse together on Tuesday. We'll be discussing all of this then.

Now that the wife has had her holiday dates confirmed to her for next year by her employer I said an hour ago "Where do you fancy going? We can go anywhere in the world do you decide"

The response was an almost blank looking stare and she said "I'm not really sure"

So now I go online to look at a few different places (Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Greece, Canaries included) and I can guarantee whatever I suggest she will turn her nose up to but the one positive being it sets her thought processes into motion and she usually starts suggesting alternatives.

Those eye drops are medicated ... you can't buy them in the drug store.

Get more even if you have some left ... apply frequently. Avoid using that eye.

I know ... mine worked out good. Get your free sunglasses too upgraded (you gotta ask)

While hosting visitors from my Minnesota hometown/college days out for business and serious wine tasting in the quake rattled Napa valley, I'm in the midst of new lawn resodding, sprinklers, new concrete patios/front walk to repair quake damage over 12 years. Also replacing the 20'x8' veggie planter-boxes with new redwood ones. Apparently the 20-year-old processed wood ones that have served till now are hazardous to health! These will be higher; so easier on the back-nuthin like a home-grown salad and corn-on-the-cob w/o a sore back!:O:

In power failure since 6AM due to very high 50 mph winds currently driving a 35,000 acre 'Kincade Fire in neighboring Sonoma county'. I had just toured with friends ther on Tuesday and now it's evacuated. Fortunately, large irrigated vineyards also tend to make good fire-breaks. Our power loss is due to two transformers affected by wind and not the official statewide rolling blackouts by PG&E which are generally announced. So I ventured to the local McDonalds for coffee and egg Mcmuffins to find half the town, now battle hardened from the 2017 fires, also there for coffee! It's the "new normal!:k_confused:":o

Trimming a tree, but I'm so anal :Dwith U on that! I organized a small block party to clean up palm fronds blown down from three tall palm trees in the 50+ mph gusting winds and put them into yard waste bins for tomorrows garbage pickup. Each 6' frond has to be snipped on half and some are caught on power lines-generally the street's a total mess. The power failure is still in effect for my area & no resolution appears imminent. My wife and I are in the dark; enjoying an old fashion(bourbon) and I'm having a vodka gimlet...the ice cubes are slightly melted as the fridge has been off 18 hours. Peanut butter and jam is on the menu. Our emergency radio is on...hey it's camping! The candles are lit. The automoblile jump-start powerpack is charging the cell phones and my Samsung tablet is somehow 'tethered' to a old laptop using an Ellypsis jetpack to get on wifi:k_confused: so I can actually post this...whatever works! :Kaleun_Applaud: EDIT: LO! No sooner do we settle in for a cheese and cracker supper in the dark with a local gewurztraminer than power is restored as of 7:37 PM! So now its blowing out the candles and recharging everything for the next power outage while watching the World Series...

Turned out to be a day of mixed fortunes. TOON threw away a goal lead to draw and Hamilton won in Mexico but is still four points short to secure the championship,

He should manage that in the US Grand Prix in Austin Texas next week.

I finally had my second Cataract surgery done on Thursday. The Chief Ophthalmology Resident finally managed to call me last night at around 18:30. She commented on my enthusiasm for having the two different focal lengths, and said that attitude is a major part of healing and if I wanted it that badly she would support me. She said she would have to run it by her boss, who is the surgeon who will be doing the operation. I said that if in the end we couldn’t convince him and he said he really thinks it’s a bad idea, I would let that be the bottom line and just live with both eyes being long-range. I’ll meet Brent downstairs at 10:00.

I met my ride Friday morning, and we got to the VA with plenty of time to spare. I didn't meet the Chief Ophthalmology Surgeon or even the Chief Resident. Instead I met a young woman doctor of middle-eastern extraction. She introduced herself and said she would be performing the operation. The Attending Nurse, a young man, verified what was being done and to which eye by asking me. I noticed that they verified a short-range lens without question, so obviously they agreed to give the the two different focal lengths.

The operation only took about twenty minutes, and I was awake the whole time. A bit dingy and disoriented, but awake. After I got home I expected to sleep the whole afternoon, but I was awake until about 21:00.

Yesterday morning I drove up there for the follow-up. They had me read the eye chart and asked if I had tried to read anything else. I said I could see clearly but couldn't actually read anything. She said that was normal and scheduled me for another appointment in two weeks. Compared to the horrible experience I had after the first surgery in December, I'd say that right now I'm feeling pretty good.

We'll see how it goes.

I will be filling the forms in tomorrow and I've noticed there is a 'comments' section so I'm thinking of writing something along the lines of "You have checked my background further than simply just the electoral register haven't you? I came home yesterday after a five-day stay in the hospital. I went in Wednesday for an Iron Transfusion. Because of the intestinal woes I had cancelled several appointments the previous week, including one with the GI department; the very people who've been trying to help with my insides.

They asked if I could stay overnight, and I agreed. They kept me another day, and another. Then they wanted me to check into a Rehab Unit to help with my falling problem. I said I would gladly go there every day, but there was no way I was going to live away from my computer and my life for another six weeks.

So I came home yesterday, and the ongoing intestinal problem kept me up all last night. I've tried to do my laundry, but I can't seem to stay focused long enough to get anything done. Maybe I'll sleep tonight.

ya that looks kinda weird, perhaps I should explain.

I have a .54 caliber black powder carbine and make the bullet cartridges out of paper. I first soak the paper in a solution of potassium nitrate (spectracide stump remover works great). Then let dry before I form the cartridge for bullet I cast. The entire process is somewhat time consuming but very relaxing.

The quick and dirty way is to seat a bullet in the rifle by hand and dump 80 grains of powder straight in the chamber.

They look similar to these except the bullet I cast is pure lead and based off the Confederate Richmond Laboratories .54 conical bullet.

Can't afford an original, all my black powders are by Pedersoli/Uberti. I have their Confederate Sharps (Robinson) carbine using RWS musket caps with no problems. I watched a fella on youtube add a little extra powder to those caps then used hair spray to 'glue' the powder in. Just one .20 gauge HOWDAH I keep half cocked in the house. Recently I've been thinking about getting a .45-70 government Sharps. For those days I dont want to expend all my hard work making those paper cartridges. :)

I'm having one of those 'Murphy's Law' weeks, where if anything can go wrong it will. I'm running out of toilet paper. I ran out of milk. I ran out of butter. Not good, but all in an average week. Then the battery on my glucose meter died. Definitely not good. So? A quick trip to the store and all will be well. But not if the car won't start. I have a neighbor who'll jump my car. He even has a special battery in a control box with cables. We hook it up and it still acts like the battery's dead. We try to jump it directly from his car, and it still won't start. He goes and digs out his battery tester. It's putting out a full load of juice. He finally decides it's the starter motor. That's going to cost more than I can afford right now, so I have to live without a car. Yesterday I took a bus to the store.

I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

If the starter clicks but will not turn it is the magneto switch, sometimes it helps to give a short blow with a hammer at the starter housing, may help for the moment.

Good advice I had an old 63 Corvair convertable that did the same thing and I had to crawl underneath and hit the starter with a hammer.

I've also had the same problem within the last few years and it was a smog related item that the part only cost $40, but the labor was a $100.

It's too cold for Steve to crawl under the car to hit the starter :yep:
Get a neighbor to do it :yep:

Was he in Africa? Varanus exanthematicus can be quite tame though :hmmm:

No he was in the "Small Animal Care" unit at the local college, where he doesn't normally encounter anything more ferocious tha a guinea pig

My son is an unusual lad: he came home from college today with some scratches on his hand. He'd been attacked by a 'boss monitor lizard'. Now I'm pretty sure that's something not many people have done

To date Ronald's death remains one of the most terrifying and bizarre instances of a human being eaten by their pets.
Although they have become popular in the US as an exotic pet, they are considered dangerous due to their sharp teeth and venom.
This venom is not necessarily fatal to humans - but it can affect blood pressure and acts as a knockout punch on smaller creatures.
Trinidad Navarro, former New Castle County Sheriff, told Animal Planet: "They received a call to check on the welfare of Ronald Huff.
"They knocked on the door but unfortunately there was no answer. They could hear things moving around inside when they were trying to gain entry.
"When they were finally able to get into the apartment they discovered Mr Huff's body, slumped up against the door.
"The largest of the monitor lizards actually did have stained blood about his face and neck so we do know he was in fact chewing on the victim."
To this day no-one knows if the lizards killed Ronald, or if the Newark, Delaware, car salesman died naturally and was then simply devoured by the free-roaming monsters.
Neighbour Jeff Wildonger said: "The smell from Ron's apartment was coming up this hollow wall into our bathroom.
"I could see that his face was pretty well eaten, I could see his molars up where his ears should have been."
An autopsy carried out by the State Medical Examiner in the weeks after Ronald's 2002 death was unable to determine exactly how he died.
However, Mike Cassidy, Ronald's former boss, later claimed his employee had once shown him injuries caused by the lizards' bite marks, suggesting he had been attacked before.
Mike said: "He was found near the door like he was trying to leave. One of the policeman had said that Ron was actually still alive when the lizards started to feed on him. They took his life."
Nile monitor lizards feast on small creatures, such as mice and rats, in the wild. Those in captivity are usually fed raw chicken.
Although they have become popular in the US as an exotic pet, they are considered dangerous due to their sharp teeth and venom.
This venom is not necessarily fatal to humans - but it can affect blood pressure and acts as a knockout punch on smaller creatures. We had a reptile room at my prep school down in the basement near the furnace room. mostly non-venomous snakes (72!) but monitors are bad when it comes to bites venom notwithstanding the bacteria in their teeth is especially dangerous. I'd seriously recommend a trip to a medical professional .

That's good Kaye T. Bai

Just remember that if you stop doing what you are doing that it is like you never did it at all :yep:

I use to walk 18 miles a day and lost a lot of weight, but that was in the 90's

Felt great, felt fine, but now it's like I never did it at all gained the weight back, have diabetes now, plus aches and pains with no one to listen to them.

New diet no salt, no sugar, no alcohol, get up every twenty minutes and exercise my back from sitting too much (at least till spring). :D

So go for it ... make us all proud of you

For the rest of us eat drink be merry for you never know about tomorrow :o

Following on from the recent completion of a SupaLite tiled roofing system on the conservatory (nobody realised the added 62mm insulation would render the existing vertical blinds too long) a new set of blinds were fitted this morbing meaning swmbo will be in a positive mood when she returns home from granddaughter sitting.

I might just chance my luck and ask her if she is willing to pay for an Indian curry tonight :03:
