Aah, I wondered, it went down last night.
This game has effectively eaten my life. I have a nice little base with a minecraft railway leading to a deep cave which leads down to some lovely lava fields and obsidian.
Todays project will be to bring a canal into and underneath the base so that I can get a rowboat out to sea without having to venture outside and have a creeper explode in my face. :yep:
I can also recommend Dokus RPG texture pack.
And, for those still on the fence:

This game has effectively eaten my life.
Aye, addicting as hell. Got it last night and I think it was around 5-6am before I went to bed. :DL
Still kinda pondering what to build. :hmmm: Hollowing a whole mountain and transforming it to an natural castle would be pretty sweet. :yep:
Ow and as for the creepers? I hate them! I had literally just finished my big project on building a large shaft to the mountain top when this one creeper comes out of nowhere and KABOOM, the whole top part of the shaft is one big mess. :damn:

I've built a little outpost where I barricaded myself after a creeper exploded in my face.
Dug some tunnels to a hill and dug up to the surface and built a small castle which is still being built.
I have taken more screenshots as I've played. :)

9€ if you purchase it when it's still in alpha stage, once it hits beta the price goes up to 20€.
The best way to deal with creepers I've found is to whack them and then back off while they're hissing, and then dart back in and whack them again. They expand sideways whilst building up to explode, so if you see it doing that, back the heck off.
Still hasn't saved me from getting blasted off ledges or ambushed by the bloody things as I walk out of my door.
Skeleton archers...them I do hate, I can't get close enough to whack them before they've dealt me heavy damage. The only thing to do is play them at their own game and fire arrows back at them.
Oh, and if you come across something looking like this:
http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/4844/minecraft20100816155149.png
Watch out! It's a mob spawner and it will spawn infinite amounts of monsters (although usually at no more than three or four per time) until you are able to destroy it. The loot in the crates can sometimes be worth it though. :hmmm:

At nine euros versus the amount of time sunk into it, it probably works out at better value than most proper commercial games out there. Plus you have the fact that it's constantly being upgraded, new things being added, new ideas being experimented on and when all is said and done and finished, instead of paying twenty dollars for the game, you'll have paid nine and still have the full game. :yep:
My humble beginning, boat shack in the foreground and the entrance or "D-Day Bunker" as I refer to it right behind it with corridor leading deeper into the mountain. The pile of rocks just above the "bunker" on the hill is my secondary exit (will be once I can be arsed to build some ladders) to allow for quicker access to wood.

Right, better get back inside, getting dark. :o
Awesome base Dowly :yeah:
How deep you have to go to find some good stuff? I'm 44 blocks deep, mining an 10x7 area downwards and the richest find has been 6 blocks of iron so far.

Awesome shots. :yeah:
Dowly, it's totally random. Iron Ore and Coal are relatively high up (Coal is generally higher than Ore). Red stone, Diamond and Gold are down closer to lava, likewise Obsidian. Try venturing into some caves, you'll find some on the walls.
Meanwhile at my base, I completely underestimated the distance between my base and the shore and the height of my base....
Ah well, digging ahoy!

Well, I've started to come by some Redstone in my deep-mine, at around 50 blocks deep. :hmmm: Ah well, like you said, digging continues.

EDIT2: Nvm, found the answer, iron pickaxe or better needed.
The Underground Harbour prepared for flooding.
I have no idea how long this damn tunnel is...but the torches are placed every five blocks, so I'm going to go and count them in a minute.

I went for a wander on another island, took out the boat and set off into the wide blue yonder. Got a nice ore load, was exploring down a mine, already whacked two Creepers...found some gold, so was planning to blockade the skeleton archers I saw, forge a nice iron axe and dig the gold out...jumped up to start blockading...
Fsssssssssssssssssh....

Creepers are annoying, and they leave a big hole in the ground afterwards. :nope:
Yeah, some very nice scenery in Minecraft, stunning at times. :yeah:
Found a long winding cavern, that I happened to fall into. Managed to explore some of it before getting killed by a spider.
No idea if the "pit" I fell into is the only way into the caverns, I have to return and continue exploring it.
Found some lava and water in there.
Really scary and creepy to explore those caverns. :o :dead:

Here are some screens from what Ive been doing
This is my main mining operation. It is about 10 or so levels up from the floor of the world. You can see the loading area where i run carts from on the right, on the left is the spiral track (5x5) going up and in the middle is the ladder I use to go up (though not down). I wish powered mine carts could push me up but they are too weak. But they are great for pushing chest carts
http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/9259/minecraft01.jpg
View of the mining room floor, with my current mine (i mine in rows of 3 or XOXXXOXXXOX for good coverage for less work) heading off to the left. Work area in the middle (with the track spiral behind) and loading zone to the right

Top of the mine, with the decent down on the left and the outside on the right
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/1248/minecraft03.jpg
View of the track to my fortress and the fort itself. The track when outside I raised 3 z levels above the surrounding land (and hacked out to 5 squares away from it, to prevent critters or mobs getting on the track and causing trouble. Took a heck of a lot of digging. the place the fort is on is about 70% man made (I also tunneled out all the sand where the earth is.

http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/2828/minecraft09.jpg
View from the beacon tower showing part of my rail system. At some point I may rework the rail system so that it can handle me in the cart being pushed by a powered cart all the way to the mine (i catch it on the way back at the top of the mine). Wish they were more powerful though. I may as an alternate just add some mine cart accelerators

Anyhow its a pretty cool game, but I find I am growing a bit bored of it. Also mineral gathering is majorly time consuming, even for basics like iron. If I do keep playing I'll be rebuilding my fort to make it bigger (very time consuming as i tend to dig down to "support" my structures), and may open up another mine.
Started the game couple of hours ago. A few pictures:

Minecraft got way too popular for this humble server. I've had to disable everything fancy to even get it to run. It went down on Saturday, September 18.
It will probably go back to normal on Monday, September 20.

So I was placing my roof from the inside, and my game glitched, causing me to spawn a brick in the space I was occupying. I tried feebly to break my way out, but ended up dying.
I noticed my game is glitching. The character will lock up for a short while swinging a tool. At one point I was able to see through the terrain to lava at the bottom.
As a side note, playing this game without sound is creepy as hell. Tis why I turned off monsters. Can't wait to buy the game so I can get sound.

Well, with the lighthouse and harbour completed and the railway to the lava mine completed, my immediate goals have been achieved. So I think I'd better start crafting myself a little castle or some such place.
In the meantime, here's some pictures from the freeware version of Minecraft that I played before getting the Alpha. In it you can place any block anywhere and break them just as quickly, it's fun but not quite as fun as the Alpha version.

I've added windows to the base floor of my soon to be castle. I'm working in my little creative area forging iron. I turn around and see something looking at me through the window. Nearly died of a heart attack. Took me a second to realize it was only a sheep. Part of the problem is I read the urban legend that's supposedly in the game.

I know how you feel. When I originally downloaded the game around 3am(it's now 8am), I decided I was going to play this for a while, and then play two other games. That didn't happen.
I just reached the bedrock in one of my many shafts. So instead of digging down I start digging to the left, come upon gold and coal, get the coal I can, but I had to leave the gold due to only having a stone pick. So I go back to my ladder and start digging in the opposite direction of last time. Come upon Redstone and coal.
So I have gone back up to my original level, and I'm going to start another tunnel in hopes I found some Iron. In hindsight I should of used my last batch of iron to make iron tools again instead of making tracks for one of my other tunnels.
"Fire & Water" in my lobby.

At one point I'm standing over this piece of stone in between pieces of bedrock. I'm about to smash my pick axe into it when I think Hmmm maybe I should step off it first. :hmmm: I step to the side, and smash through it. Through my newly created hole I see the "void"

For me I found the best trick when mining is to use stone tools (picks and shovels) for everything until you hit a seam where you need iron.
I also think the amount of iron in this game that you get from mining (ie effort vs reward) is paltry compared to my needs for it.
Plus I am starting to get a little bored. I reworked my mine cart track so it can carry me there and back, and expanded my castle structure a good bit too, but I'm running out of ideas that I want to bother with.
I do however kind of wish that this game and dwarf fortress would have a baby ;)

Here's one of my oldest projects in my current game, need to get back it it. :hmmm: Anywho, it's a mapping tower, once I find a natural cave or break surface from one of my mines I mark it with torches (for mines I make a torch trail back to base) and this tower allows me to see where's something worth exploring. It's maybe half way finished, just making a glass lobby and then head up for a few more floors.

Well now I'm thoroughly hooked. Spent hours upon hours yesterday reclaiming a large portion of open sea and merging two islands together. Built a stone wall clear down to bedrock to hold the seawater back and opened up all that land into a strip mine. I only kept enough soil to grow a few trees, the rest was pitched out anywhere I could dump it.
All that work and all I built was one wimpy tower. :haha:
At some point I was working in the deep mine and found the void. Lost so much stuff when I fell through and died that I decided to start over. This game is way addictive. :rotfl2:

Decided to dig a stairway starting from an exit tunnel, going down and then splitting in 2 directions that would both curl back and end up in the same big room. Sort of a grand staircase.
1 of them led into my mine. Was a little surprised to end up in a torchlit open space.
The other was more succesfull, though I hit a gravel vein that led me to dig out a rather sizeable cavern, harvesting a good amount of flint, iron and coal along the way. After filling it back up with dirt and sealing it with cobblestone, I continued to finish the stairs and dig out the room:
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj2/EZatHome/javaw2010-09-2200-18-02-94.jpg
Already mined the coal and iron that was part of the room, but still plenty of veins to follow.
Once I'm done with this, my little project to dig out a room will have yielded more resources than that bloody mine. :-?

SeaNanners, ever since you started playing Minecraft, everyone wants to play Minecraft. And this huge surge made the Minecraft administrators go, "WOAH! WHEN DID WE GET SO POPULAR?" Their answer to this is when SeaNanners, a youtuber / great commentator / all-around good guy, made a single video about this game and everyone caught interest off of his interest. So, their website ASPLODED from SeaNanner's fans (which is us!) Thumbs up if you agree!

One of my chests keeps resetting the items in it. But it only does it once in a while.
Lets say I have a iron bucket and 5 tiles of rock in it, and 5 pieces of iron in my regular inventory. If I take out the iron bucket and put in the 5 pieces of iron, close the chest, and then open it again, my five iron pieces will be gone, and the bucket plus the 5 tiles of rock will be there.
Theoretically I could use it to multiply items(I now have two buckets), but before I realized what was happening I lost 20 pieces of iron, and 4 pieces of stairs(which I can easily replace).
Edit: Well it looks like I'll have to delete this level and start a new one. Jumped out of a minecart when it was in motion and got stuck in the air.

Good lord... so I took it upon myself to build a skylight into the mine's roof. Hopefully that will at least burn away the nasties come daybreak, keeping the total population down.
Right... :shifty:
I got killed by a spider when I went to collect wood for tools.
Fell down the shaft once.
Got pelted by arrows as I made my way down to collect my stuff.
When I was putting in the glass, a chicken walked up to the edge and stood there, just looking at me... after a moment of consideration, I knocked him into the hole, watching him slowly descend as he frantically flapped his wings. Then another chicken pushed me over the edge.
After splattering my brains across the bottom of my haunted mineshaft , again, I respawned, again. I went down the shaft under the usual barrage of arrows, again, and found the chicken alive and well, scurrying through my possessions. I quickly grabbed them and went back up the ladder, seeing the skeleton archer pass me on his way down (the fast way), leaving the chicken to rot for his compatriote's offense.
The whole ordeal almost made me rage-quit. And my mine is still haunted... At least now I can look down upon that which caused me such sorrow. Perhaps I'll open up a hole every now and then and lure in a few creepers, watching them plummet down and impact the floor of my haunted abyss.

That's where I gt the idea of a generator from. Especially since you can use furnaces as power supplies for mine carts, and red dust being used for electric wires.

I learned that the hard way while trying to fuel a furnace. Was pretty sure my crosshairs were over the furnace at the time, but apparently I was wrong. :damn:
Dead wrong. :har:
*snort* :-?
One of these days I'll remember to get some screenshots while I'm building stuff. My pet project right now is to build a viewing room around a lavafall that had found its way down over my pickaxe (then head, shoulders, finally boots). After a painful respawn I went back down with a healthy amount of TNT and blasted a nice cavern out around the lava's point of entry, which created the lavafall and dissipated my frustrations. Thought it would make a nice tourist attraction (you know, for when Minecraft meets Tropico :O:) and have since been renovating the area. All it needs now is a bar and Slayer as the headliner. :DL

Shafts 2A and 2B finally connected, I intend to eventually do the same with all shafts so they make one big square and then start to slice the squares into smaller ones until they're riddled with shafts. Kinda fun to assemble bridges, towers, castles, underground complexes and even underwater habitats, and tie it all together with tunnels and tracks. Very constructive outlet, let's you be creative and use your imagination to its full extent.

I just finnished the inner wall when the sun set, I run into my cave and start digging. The sun rises I walk out wanting to test my watchtower I walk out on it, KA-BOOM, "Dead? WTF"-me.
A creeper jumped off the cliff above me and landed on my head and exploded :nope: I had thought of everything exept Air to Ground combat!

Let me clarify that: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/index.php?title=Griefing
Particularly:
Random destruction is when a griefer destroys random blocks, putting holes in walls and other structures, making them look broken and messy.
The opposite of random destruction, random construction occurs when a griefer creates random blocks on constructions and anything else on a map, making it look messy.
Some griefers grief by writing rude words or drawing offensive symbols everywhere.
* I've set up a communal box on top of Mount Admin. You'll find some torches and wood in there. New players are free to take a stack of torches (32) and wood (16) to get them started. You're free to use the crafting table up there to make your first tools; the wood should do nicely for that.
That mountain is visible from the spawn, to the east. There's a staircase on the edge of the small lake, mountains W side. There's also a more obvious grand stairs leading up on it's N side.

Joker, in response to the post you so quickly deleted: Where to begin?
Destroying other people's creations. Stealing property, torches to be exact. Randomly dumping blocks on some one or their property. Obscenity. It goes on.
I asked you to stop, I argued with you, I warned you several times. Stuff kept going missing and the landscape kept on degenerating. You singlehandedly destroyed an entire lanscape by digging random holes and tunnels just to get dirt.
Why do you need to dig away half the mountain someone is building on if there's plenty of dirt around?
Why don't you mine the coal you find doing that and make your own torches?
Why do you build a fort on someone's lawn? Everyone else picked their own spot.
Why destroy 1 block in a wall to get out if there is a door beside it?
Again, it goes on.
We already spend hours trying to patch it up, and it's far from done. You're presence was, quite frankly, destructive.

Three or four days ago I was about ready to break my hiatus from SH3 and start a new career in a Type II... but then I read this thread and just had to give this game a whirl. Now I'm begging people on the streets for redstone and obsidian, for sticks and blocks of sand.
"Spare eight cobblestone, sirs?", I ask.
"Why on Earth do you need cobblestone?", one replies.
"I need it so that I can build a furnace. The Creepers are coming again and... and...", I sputter, falling short of a concise answer.
They kick me aside, not knowing what I am ranting on about. If only they knew what eight simple cobblestone really meant to this poor soul... :wah:
Meanwhile... I finally cleared away enough land to start building. Reserved a large 36x20x8 chunk of the mountain and have hollowed it out to serve as headquarters. Once the windows are all finished I'll probably dig a basement and work on some redstone circuits... cuz this building will really stand out with some flashing signs.

Lots and lots of caverns underneath all of that, too. It's pretty hard to imagine even while I'm playing that it's an immense world. Just clearing that little bit of land took me probably a couple of days of cumulative time, and each time I run the savegame through Cartographer I see the fruits of my labor rendered as a tiny gray speck in a sea of green. I'll have to get some screenshots of the terrain that lies just east of there - there is a cliff and overhang that looks really impressive. :DL

It's weird, isn't? Rather basic concept, though it clearly works, and a lot more there than meets the eye. For example, the world; extensive on the surface, but what lies beneath boggles the mind.
I'm still more inclined to stick to digging a mine, keep it organised, than venture into a natural cave and its treasures, burning through stacks of torches to light a place that seemingly goes on forever. Even when you think you explored all of it, you mine some blocks of coal and suddenly break through in more cavern.
*right, set up sort of a bank on the server where you can exchange crafting materials. It's rather expensive to avoid abuse, but at least there's a place to dump some dirt, for example, and get something usefull in return.

While exploring into the unknown I found a city that a clan must of built, a "true" work of art. As I worked my way torwards the city, I saw that a lot of it had been destroyed, some areas were flooded and others on fire.
Going back again to get some pics :DL

Epic as hell. But as a commenter pointed out it looks awfully like the google earth rendition.

Notice the "Scaffolds" as he calls them are in the same areas that the notes are. :hmmm:

Huh... I noticed that the detail was quite refined in that video. That's kind of where I got stumped -- it takes awhile just to build a lookout tower. Building something as big as that ship would take a really long-ass time. :dead:
So how did he get a model into Minecraft as unified blocks? How iiiin-teresting. :hmmm:

Coding magic. If you read the description he said that he did imported from his "plans"
Sadly, my hard drive blew and I lost six months of work. The only thing I had was my original framework and It was just too painful to start over. One of the things that was not lost was the deck plans and a nice computer-friendly vector format, converted from the Whitefire plans (Not the Okuda ones). The plans are pretty rough, but workable. One day I need to go through and clean them up.
The Minecraft world uses 1m^3 blocks, ans so, I simply converted my already scaled plans into a format that minecraft could take and imported each deck in batch, leaving 4 spaces in between for wallsLooks more like he just took the google plans. :hmmm:
'
Edit:
Two important comments:
I would say he used ModelGen. It can take .obj files and add them to minecraft maps. Here is the minecraft forum on it: minecraftforum[dot]net/viewtop*ic[dot]php?f=25&t=645
True. But the video itself contradicts the description. For example he calls the labels imported from the model "scaffolding" and strongly implies he built it by hand. Which is obviously a lie.

And that's why I'm trying to keep a fairly short leash on the server. Someone TKs in ArmA, you respawn. Someone burns down your "house" in Minecraft, it's hours of effort down the drain.
At any rate, .net is back and so is the server.

I just found out that the clan destroyed the server, the whole thing.:o
They moved to a different server.
I guess griefers chased them out or even a rival clan or something.

How does the bank work? I just stumbled upon it.

Good question. :O: We talked with Arc about maybe having somekind of economy system (buy 1 diamond with 5 gold nuggets etc.), but don't know what he had in mind for the bank. :hmmm:

Why are you pricing gold and redstone so high? Redstone is stupid easy to get piles of the stuff, and gold is pretty much useless.

Effort and resources involved. Need to get far down and use iron tools, not to mention gold is hard to find.
It's a bit skewed in MP since there are no enemies, so you can just walk into a natural cave and sack it. :hmmm:
Now that I started constructing the larger sphere on the server I thougth I'd make a few "business" offers for whoever is interested.
1. I have 68 (IIRC) pieces of coal in a chest located at the site of my first house (just as you enter the Ferret Island, to the left). Now, if you have any extra stone, I am willing to trade 5 pieces of iron for every full stack of stone. It's a steep price, but I really need all the stone I can get and don't really have any use for iron atm. :)
2. Once you enter the Ferret Island, if you go straight you'll see a torch marking my mine on the side of a mountain, I'm willing to give free access to it for anyone who in return will give me all or atleast some of the stone he gets while mining there. The mountain has lots of coal, 90% of the veins have had 10-15 pieces so far and I've found quite a bit of iron there too.
That is all. :salute:

Tempting offer. Might be enough to get me online. I hardly ever build anything, and often end up with heaping surpluses of building material.
Do you want cobblestone or stone? Both? :hmmm:

Cobblestone will do fine, have to take back that 1. option, gave most of my iron to Lionclaw already, but mine is still free to use. :salute:

Cool beans. Well, payday is a few days out so I'll probably be trying multiplayer out next week sometime. If your offer is still valid by then I'll be taking you up on it.
In other news:
I opened my savegame to find that part of the mountain I had chiseled away had reintegrated with about half of my headquarters building. :stare:
No other option but to edit the bulk of it out with a map editor. The good thing is that most of my mine tunnels remained intact. The next time I build something, it will be on terrain that is already mostly level.

It wasn't really a question if it would crash, it had happened a few times before. But now it's expected, it has something to do with the area around Admin Mountain.
For example, I took another route back to my place, it didn't crash.
Good thing if it crashes is that it's quick to start it up and continue. :)
Yes, if we ever generate a map (can that be done in multiplayer maps? Would be interesting to see it) then we'd need to mark that area as the CTD Triangle.

If you mean like with Cartograph, then yes, but only Arclight has the world so he has to do it. :yep:
Hopefully I got the places right.

Trying to get into Minecraft after Oberon told me about it but... is it just building stuff? Thought it was more than that  Currently fiddling around in Classic.

Building, mining, exploring. That's pretty much what it's all about.
Classic is very stripped down version of Alpha, tho.
Check this wiki entry to see a comparisation of the features in different gamemodes:

The alpha runs for that price, once it hits beta the price goes up to 14,95€ (that's the latest I heard Notch say) and the final version will be 20€ (IIRC).
Wow! Thanks Dowly, that's awesome...that Crystal Palace...I'm really rather proud of it, it's looking like the real thing did...well, obviously it's not on fire...not yet, anyway but still, damn. :yeah:
