A suggestion for those who are in the track building business:

I did not realise that unpowered boost rails would act as a brake.
That would almost certainly sort out our issues with stopping at stations.
Use a detector rail for the chimes and an unpowered rail to break with a button to hit that will let it fire you into the existing booster.
That way no more lag issues for people trying to get a runup to the booster.
Thanks for that.
Are there any resources that C19 is in need of other than redstone?
NeonSamurai

Keep in mind though the powered rail only accelerates already moving carts, so for a button to work the powered rail would have to be on a downward slope in the direction you want. Also put a normal track between the detector and the powered rail or the detector will switch the rail on
hmm good point. I'll have to play around at one of the stations, see what I can come up with.

Wanting to experience some of the new weather conditions in the game, he plugs in a special seed suggested by an anonymous yognaught: "-1293644106920865080"
Things do not go as expected. Also his microphone set up is still kinda crappy.

Last week, I started playing around with minimaps, and Vraket from Oxeye games (http://www.oxeyegames.com/) took some interest in it. We played around with it for a while, and it kinda got more and more ambitious as we went. Now it’s a proper mapping tool! You make a map, and it starts out empty. As you move around, you fill in parts of the map automatically (as long as the map is being held). You can give the map to other people and they will see what you’ve explored on there, and it’s quite possible you will even be able to magically “link” two maps so they’re the same map. That means you will be able to see where other people who carry the same map are.

Would be more useful if it let you map caves as well. But I think it has potential.

I dunno, I think the maps will be fairly useless myself. You have to hold the map in your hands for it to map out, and each map is unique unless cloned. The detail level is meh, and there are better 3rd party mapping programs already.
As for cave mapping, I wish, but that would be difficult to do in game as a physical object, trying to have a 3d map. You could have a layered map but even then it wouldn't work very well.
TteFAboB
04-29-11, 04:16 AM
Unless the server disables 3rd party mapping.
Then it's the only way to find your path to distant and secret locations.
Though it'd be far better if you could mark things in it, like a dotted line and an X marking the spot... I'd love crafting fake pirate treasure maps that lead to horrible traps myself. :arrgh!:
Oh right, forgot to mention yesterday. For whoever uses texture packs, a user by the name of Kahr has made his own version of Xau's HD patcher. The difference to Xau's original patcher is that, you only have to patch the game once, after that you can just install texture packs to the texture pack folder and no matter the size, they'll all work by just enabling them from the in-game menu, just like you'd be using only 16x packs.

Oberon, I noticed that City 19 seemed to lag in terms of blocks, and cause "end of streams". It turns out the fast pulse of the redstone under the clock tower was causing the problem. Next time don't use a 5 clock :O:

Yeah, we need a slower pulsar. I don't think the redstone delayers are going to work because they don't slow down the speed of the pulse, just how long it takes to get to its target which is not really want we want, we want to widen the gap between pulses. So, perhaps we need to shove the repeaters between the gaps in a clock of some sort, perhaps a 9 clock or something.
I'll smash some stuff up and experiment.
For science.

You don't need a pulser, as soon as you finish the loop, the repeaters will work as a pulser. Essentially repeaters function as a clock if in a loop, the more repeaters in this loop, the longer it takes for the clock to "tick".
Edit: After having a creeper chase me into the brothel and blow a hole through two floors, I vote we upgrade the lighting system.

Right, somehow I'd like to connect the output of the clock into the Westminster Chime I'm making:

So...erm...help?

My suggestion is put the chime underground, height doesn't matter, i can hear the ticking of my clock at any height above or below ground.
Also to get it to chime on the hour is going to take a hell of a lot of space. It takes three repeaters just to get a 1 second delay (0.4 seconds per repeater max).
The design i use for a double ticking clock (2 different ticks) is 6 repeaters, 3 going one way, 3 the other, a bunch of redstone wiring, and note blocks on each end.

Gold equipment is typically impractical as it has extremely low durability (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Item_Durability), and can only mine stone, cobblestone, coal and slabs. However, gold tools are the fastest at digging of all tools, and as such may be useful if one is in a hurry and has plenty of gold.
Hmm, didn't know this. Looking at the charts it's way better than diamond in terms of speed.

Hey Arc I think I might have inadvertently trampled some of your crops at the spawn.
I was running low on health after a creeper attack and needed a bed to kip in and mistook your farm for part of the communal part of the spawn as its next to lenins tree farm. I replaced the wheat I harvested and thought I had taken care not to stand on any of the crops but Dowly says not. I will head over next time Im on and tidy up
Sorry

I always have a look there and do some planting when I'm at spawn and there's seeds somewhere around, prolly the little underground farm, in the chest there.

Why, trample this sample I offer in example:

Does it make any sense? By elevating the dirt and the water one tile above the floor, and by covering the water with, for example, glass, there's no more need to step on the precious tilled soil.
I just have my water for my farm under it and use sneak when I go harvest.

1 block of water can supply 4 blocks of tilled dirt around it (in square). So on the other side of the path you can place a strip of dirt 2 blocks wide for which you do not need water.

G= glass
d= tilled dirt

I do a similar thing in my farm underground, but instead of glass I use wood, therefore I can plant whilst standing on the wood, avoiding trampling unless I fall onto the stuff.

Server will be down this weekend, hopefully not more than a few hours. I'm rebuilding it with RAID0, requiring a reïnstall of Windows. Planned for Saturday, I'll post a notice when I start.
Might make a difference in performance, considering it is very dependant on HD access.

"What if the power fails?!"
Is this guy even a submariner?
BATTERY! :know:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uninterruptible_power_supply
I have 2. It's great. Oh no, the power failed! There goes my unsaved work... No more. With this when the power goes out all I get is an annoying beeping: BEEP! BEEP! And I have about 15 minutes of beeping to save everything and shut the PC down.
They're very expensive and bulky though, and the batteries get old in only a few years and then need replacement.
But having your PC run on a battery is the ultimate statement of hardcore submersible spirit! Either that, or having a personal a nuclear reactor...

I, for instance, when suffering a flood in Silent Hunter 3, will grab a jug of water to dump over my Battery UPS, simulating, or better yet, reenacting in full realism the effects of toxic fumes. Dead is dead. For real. :x :arrgh!:
You want me to put everything in volatile memory? What if the power fails? :06:What!?! You don't make regular backups? ;)
Last weekend I set up my own minecraft server using MineOS+ ( http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=275177) The server is actually a virtual machine in Hyper-V (= 'virtual pc' for Windows Server 2008 R2). I have plenty ram in it so I could afford it to make it set up a ramdisk. It required some linux commands (note: I am very linux-noob) but I have it backing up the ramdisk to physical disk (ok, virtual harddisk file) every 15 minutes automatically. It's all explained in the videos on youtube that Hexparrot made. (Youtube nick: MineOSadmin)
But depending on your hardware it may not be a possibility.

Arc, use some of that cheese to get a mouse on a treadmill going. That's emergency back-up PSU sorted. :yep:

Well call me crazy, but I'm not going to buy UPS for the 0.0001% chance the power actually fails here.
And yes, I realise that really undermines my previous argument. :hmmm:
As for RAMdisk; to the best of my knowledge the software only created an image at the end of a session, but I guess I should have expected the possibility to have it save more often.
So that might be an option then: who's gonna pay for the 4GB memory kit to replace the current 2GB one? :O:
(and would it work on Win7?)

As some been asking, here be a map showing where my town is.

If you'll head SW from City 19 or spawn, you most likely run into something I've made an can easily follow it to my mansion and head west towards the town from there.
Looks good, I can possibly throw the Northern line that way if wanted. :hmmm:

I am not quite following you. Are you talking about MineOS, the standard Minecraft server application, or whatever you are currently using as backup method? Can you explain how you have the minecraft server setup up now?
If you need to spend money to get it to work then forget it. I know you had some income trouble not long ago. Been there, done that... actually still am. To be honest, I'm not that familiar with ramdisk solutions for Windows (7). But you would probably be limited to 3rd party extentions.

In fact Dowly's Town is bigger than our City.

What is the circle I highlighted? I've been wondering what's there.
Also I've marked the future prison area for City 19, so don't plan to expand that way(not that it would be an easy task due to the mountain anyways). If we are to expand, the Best bet is to expand North East, North West, and North, as this is the flatest, and least filled with water area. I was planning on building small buildings in the outskirts, but we could build another wall system. The outer wall would be "low class" while the inner wall is "upper class".
Talked to our internet service provider today and went ahead and bought my own connection just for my room(had to pay to get a new line added to the house) and I bought the 6M connection. The bad news is that I wont get it until May 20th(next week). The good news is I only have to share the line with my fiancee so I shouldn't have internet issues anymore.

Minecraft_Server.exe under Win7. Default method getting it running.
A RAMdisk is done in software: just makes a partition using system RAM. Only 2GB now, so not an option unless I get a 4GB kit in there. From what I've read about it, some of the software creates an image on the HD when you close things down. Since the server restarts once every few months, that would not be an option.
Making back-ups is just a matter of me copying the folder somewhere.
Getting more RAM is not really an issue, but I already have 2 identical drives to put into RAID0, so why spend more money. Chances are neither that or a RAMdisk application would make any difference: when I play (over LAN), there is no lag, so the "problem" only exists in the networking of the server application and the connections of individual players.
Whoever made that THING at my place, thanks, you owe me a new heart. :har:

Phew it's gone.
Problem with a mob trap though, is by the time you make it and get it running well, and collect enough sand and powder, you have spent more time then it would have taken to just mine out the area you want to blast. If you want a really efficient trap you need to pretty much light up all surface and below ground area in a 128 block radius around the collection area. If you want to get farm critters you also need to get rid of all grass in that same area (this is why i built my trap in the middle of a lake surrounded by mostly desert).
For me it is worth the time, since my mob trap will be my major contribution to this server when done, but I am doing a heck of a lot of blasting trying to level the surrounding area below the water. Already gone through 2 full stacks of TNT, figure ill need another 3 or so before I am done.
Anyhow ill be idling on the server for the next 8 hours collecting powder. If that is a problem feel free to kick me from the server :)
Phase 3 is about 80% done, almost leveled all the land in a 145 block radius around the trap center so that it is below water (or well lit up with no grass). Next is phase 4, lighting up all the caves inside that radius... fun.

Before you place the TNT deep into the blast tunnel, pick out the blocks directly adjacent to the TNT block position. Result a larger hole.
In real-life a confined space for explosives to detonate in does more damage because the pressure is higher. But in Minecraft this works the other way around funny enough.

Neon, looking at the amount of gunpowder I got by idling (2 stacks) vs. the amount I got in 30min while playing normally (1/2 stack), I'm pretty sure there is an away system in SMP that kicks in and reduces the mob spawn rates for said player.

Oh, plenty! I'm glad you asked that question. Here's the exhaustive list of everything else I do in Minecraft (take a seat):
1. Punch trees.
2. Punch sheep.
3. Punch Oberon to death. No, wait, wrong list, that's on To Do.
4. Get blasted by creepers, a lot. This is what I do the most.
5. Get killed by spiders. Second most done thing.
6. Ride the Tube back and forth on a single ticket. Weeeeeeeee.
7. Take fall damage from any change of elevation, including upwards.
8. Get lost. Ask Zirran.
9. Never finish the Geisha. I'm sure a lightning will do the job.
10. Lag.
11. Punch cacti. Yeouch!
12. Dig into lava.
13. Dig into lava from below.
14. Be amazed by other people's amazing constructions.
And finally, #15, never cease to be impressed by the magnanimous generosity of our great Host benefactor, a man as just as he is kind, as gentle as he is handsome, as tall and athletic as the potent stallion he is in bed; a man who only acts out of good will and in acting spreads but the will of all that is good and superior, that everything he touches turns ever fairer, so that only his single limitation of human form stands between him and his mere breath bringing paradise to all of Minecraftia, but only to where his gracious feet bless trodding.

But I do remember taking a leap of faith and breaking one piece of cobblestone next to an Iron Door, but I immediately replaced it correctly, as far as I can remember. It was the door blocking the corridor you get into from a breech in the wall covered by a wooden door facing the lake and the tower in the middle of it. If I remember, that wasn't even the correct entrance to that labyrinthical compound. I don't know how I got in there, and I sure don't know how I got out either!
This is the only thing I'm not proud of. Needless to say, if there were redstone, water, lava, sand or gravel it would've been a very ugly mess. This is the only block from somebody's building that I ever broke. Gladly, it was harmless, but it could've been very much different, and I fully regret doing it.
In any case, today I am going away for a week, so your buildings, cakes and cactuses should be safe for the moment.

Hatches :o
*mutters* I was just about to post that.
He mentions fixing a bug with not getting walking sounds when walking on a fence. Does that mean he fixed getting stuck on it?
I'll have to plug on with the HGC tomorrow in preparation for this. :yep:

Thar we go. Let's see what the deal is with those hatches. :hmmm:
Be aware, my private server has started to become more laggy (jumping framerates, rough camera movement) since 1.6.2. And I've seen the same reports on the Minecraft Forum.
Understandably there's more stress to the server now that 2 worlds are being saved.
Found a handy bug, it seems that going through the nether portal replenishes your health. :O:
EDIT: Reading the forums, there seems to be an bug that might make your tool break after 1 use, so I'd advice to use stone/iron ones until there's an
official word that it has been fixed.
EDIT2: Here's what seems to cause the 1 use break bug:
1 Drop tool
2 Pick it up
3 Use it once / right click on a block with it
4 Tool breaks
So...who had the same idea as me then? Who else built an SGC? :hmmm: Because the SGC I came out of the wormhole into was not the same SGC as I left...and yes I did check the date and it wasn't 1969...
Think Arclight built something like that, not sure.
As for Nether, it is straining the server quite a bit, even when only one player is in there. So, we have to think something to resolve that. Everyone going in and starting to build their mainbases there would make the game unplayable due to lag.

Ya i have a gate room in operation. No way you get past the front door though, unless you tunnel through a wall or something. :hmmm:
Nevermind, didn't say a thing. No walls to tunnel through, none at all. :88)
*further updates to 1.6.4. Mentions ridiculous CPU usage.
**Muuuch better. No probs on the hardware now. Gating is weird though; keep ending up in the same 2 spots: gate near Geno's cacti farm and fort hell alpha or something. I wanna go home. :(
Hell-base Alpha.
Yeah, there's a problem with gates being close together...going to have to build gates on the Nether side I think. :hmmm:

Yeah, working on it... I may have nudged the power cable loose on the main HD while I was putting another one in the bracket. Windows didn't like that, and it kinda seems like I will have to restore to last backup, from this morning just before update.
Sorry about any inconvenience. :-?
*fixed, but rolled back to backup.
Just an FYI folks...erm...
Don't use beds in the Nether...
They...um...explode...
Well, I see no need for them anyway. There is no day/night cycle to speed through. And the portal is pretty much your spawn point there. But a Nasty Notch indeed!

*fixed, but rolled back to backup.RTFM! Always unplug the machine if you are messing with the hardware! Even a toaster manual would have sufficed for that.

I had to trek through the Nether to find your gate, go from your place to mine, collect flint&steel, back to your place to use the gate and then through the Nether again to my gate.
Then I had to do it all over again to fetch my diamond pick, because I couldn't reactivate the thing due to some misplaced Obsidian.
Kept me busy. :yep:

1.6.6 update is a go.
Unless there are any emergency things to fix, I won---8217;t do any more updates before 1.7. Going to E3 on Saturday.
I will be bringing my laptop to do some development, but I won---8217;t be able to do much testing.
ONWARDS TO THE ADVENTURE UPDATE! *holds up sword, poses dramatically*
1.6.6:
+ Added a new use for bonemeal
* Changed the material of glowstone from ---8220;glass---8221; to ---8220;stone---8221;. This means you need a pickaxe to get resources from it
* Made glowstone drop more loot
* Made the recipe sizes for creating cloth blocks and glowstone blocks smaller (2x2 instead of 3x3)
* Re-introduced unlimited FPS, renamed the option again
* Fixed beds not working very well at all in SMP
* Fixed destroying a boat spawning the player too low, causing them to sometimes fall through the ground
* Boats float up to the surface quicker
* Boats falling down into water lose their vertical momentum very fast
* Removed Herobrine (<- proof that Notch hates his forum moderators... poor guys)
So what could the bonemeal be for? Glue to stick blocks together? <grin>
[EDIT] According to the minecraft wiki, it's just fertilizer for grass to tall grass and flowers.
As of beta SMP version 1.6.6 Notch added a new use to bone meal. This new use is to place it on grass to grow long grass and flowers.
