It's been a labour of love alright, but definitely worth it.
Oh, Spike, a new little hut type thing has emerged near your castle not far from the Central Line station, it's part of the Greenwich Foot Tunnel which now links your castle, Angus's island and my castle and will hopefully go on to the Crystal Palace.
I wonder if I should do Crystal Palace High Level railway station.... :hmmm:

Steel should require Iron and coal. And just require that you re-smelt any completed iron.
It should double as not only a building supply, but as a tool requirement.
Edit: I keep getting on to work on the Hindenburg. Then I realize that I need wood, don't feel like cutting any, so I log off.

You should plant your own forest. I loved wood in that game as its easy to get and very renewable. Before the 'demo' expired, i redid my castle in solid stone and expanded it. It was 6 levels (3 underground) plus a sky tower. Needless to say it used a massive amount of stone, which needed a massive amount of wood (and like 8 furnaces going at once) and cobblestone.
You can still play the free weekend version in offline mode, no "rules" against it. You just can't update the game.

Eh that's alright, frankly I was getting bored with the game, and anoyed that I had tones of redstone, but hardly any iron, even after massive amounts of mining.
Plus I have other games to play, and no time anyhow. My current schedule is nuts; I do full 4th year university course load (30-40 hours), plus 15-20 hours of volunteer & payed service at a psychiatric leisure center, plus another 10-15 hours of research work (scholarship) in a lab, and about 10 hours of travel time. That totals about 85 hours a week, and I am not counting all the little tasks and jobs and chores for day to day life.

I have my own forest between the end of the Hindenburg, and my castle. You can see the part of the foliage in one of the screens. Somewhere between 25-30 trees. Its just cleaning up to replant is a pain. I usually set a brush fire to clear the foliage left over.
I just feel too lazy to do the work.

I don't know how seriously you're taking this game, but if it's purely so your can build your creation to a level that satisfies, do this:
Step one back up your world (just in case).
Enter your game save and place 1 ingot of Iron in each inventory slot. Save & Exit.
Get a copy of NBTedit.
Open your level.dat and navigate & expand the section called "Inventory", each entry represents one slot in your inventory. Expand the section labbled as "4 Entries" and look at the Count entry. It should read 1, double click and enter 64, press enter. Repeat this for every Inventory entry slot down the list, then save.
Load the game and find every inventory slot now showing Iron Ingots x 64.:D

Of course, if you're playing legitimately, I was never here and you saw nothing.

Ouch, sounds like something I wouldn't want to experience! For me school currently takes about the same amount of hours, but the subjects vary a lot. Shooting, combat training and other kinds of practical and physical excercises provide a nice change for all the theory. Currently computer games don't really fit this schedule except for Minecraft and Widelands, both of which are great if you can't afford to play for hours at a time. Take 15 minutes here and there and the game doesn't suffer at all, something that wouldn't really work with Arma2 or SH4.

I assume Depth. Red is closer to the surface, dark blue is closer to the bottom.

The color is actually the amount of light. Blue = dark, red = max. amount of light. Atleast, my mine shaft has red dots on certain intervals, which correspond to the placement of my torches.

You're right. Here is what the readme says:
Cave Mode: Renders caves (empty blocks not lit by sunlight)
For those who aren't following the forums, here's a neat little site where you can customize your texture pack from quite a few choices:

The size of the textures is the default MC size, which means that Doku's pack still probably looks the best resolution wise.

Not sure about the torch changes, I can see myself dungeoning and not being able to find my way out again.:o Biomes should be interesting though.
What method of mining is everyone using? I think (from screenshot) that Dowly just dug a huge hole (strip mine? or was that a giant bowl for frosties?), how did that pan out for Ore? Or, were you more interested in cobblestone?
I have developed a branch mine starting at bedrock level (adminantium). Currently it's only 3 levels high ( but each level has a central corridor, with 20 branches each side (40 total), spaced at 3 blocks apart, each at 20 blocks deep. Took some time but the payoff was worth it.
8 x 64 Coal
2 x 64 Diamond
4 x 64 Redstone
3 x 64 Gold
1 x 64 Iron Ore
Not too mention a shed load of Cobblestone, which I'm now using to construct my citadel.
Unfortunately, I can't render my mine as Cartograph doesn't seem to like my added mine system and all the torches.:D
I mine in 4 long shafts going in all main directions (N,S,E,W) and then connect them and start slicing the big square that they form. Haven't gotten all that far down yet, so can't say how much diamond etc. I can find by doing that, but plenty of coal and iron at these levels. :yep:

Ah, pretty much the same theory then.
Except I started at the bottom as I wanted a Diamond Pick. I also offset my levels and spaced them so I don't miss a block. Like this (although it's getting tricky remembering the math :P :
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s64/danlisa_photo/Mines.jpg
I really need to install a cart system, it's getting tedious carrying my full inventory up and down.
You should see how quickly a diamond pick munches through stone and how long it lasts. Based on my design, a diamond pick will do one mine level, which is about 1900 excavated blocks, that doesn't include mining the ore veins though and collapsing sand.

For carts servicing my mine I had done a 5x5 spiral set up so it would fit a staircase (corner block and first block in would be at the same height, then go up a block each time until the next corner). I also put my ladder in the middle of the spiral. You can run powered carts up that pretty easily with one chest cart (more carts and it has the tendency to get stuck). You can also just fill one cart up, send it to your terminus (put a block at the end of the track), then do more mining, and send another after it. It will not be able to push you up the shaft though (hence the ladder). For that to work, you need a 1/4 incline roughly (1 up per 4 blocks along).
I also ended up elevating the track outside 5 levels up (or digging it out to 5 squares away), to make sure critters and mobs never spawned on the track or blocked it in any way.
There are some pictures of it on the second or third page if you want to see it
My mine was setup like this
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
x
x
x
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
x
etc, about 5 levels above the bedrock to avoid all the lava, with the tunnels running a couple hundred blocks (30 torches long that just barely lit up the place). I found lots of caves too but those are dangerous places often packed with mobs (I once encountered about 5 skeletons, 3 spiders, 7 zombies, and 4 of those exploding numbats, all in one medium pit area).
I would do this as long as I wanted, then move up 3 levels and start again.

Get the map from Arc and rename it to world1 - 5 and put into the saves directory. Haven't tried if it works, AFAIK, MP uses parts from different .jar, so. :hmmm:

Ehm, hmm... Had some general weirdness; installed latest graphics driver. Nvidia has a new installer that just let's you update without reboot. Screen goes black for a few seconds as the new driver initializes and that's it.
But.
Noticed the server console was gone, and had flashing inside browser as pages loaded. Did a reboot, but since I had no console I couldn't tell if the server was running or not, or stop it gracefully allowing it to save. Not sure everything is as it's supposed to be, might be some lost progress.
Not much though, iirc it auto-saves every minute.
General F-up, courtesy of Nvidia. :-?

Woot! Just found my first infinite (atleast it seems like infinite :hmmm:) lava source!
EDIT: Ok, well now the game is just taking a piss at me. I continued mining to the opposite direction from the lava flow, after 5 blocks I came upon another lava flow, I thought "Oh, well this is nice, incase that other one isn't infinite after all I can use this." So, I switched to another shaft and started mining to a new direction, 6 blocks in = laval, I start another shaft and try to go around the 3rd flow, 9 blocks in = lava. :shifty:
FINE!
I started again a new shaft to the 4th direction, 13 blocks in = lava. :stare: Shaft #2 in same direction, 24 blocks in = lava. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-- :damn::damn:
EDIT2:
Hahaha, MC just scared the **** out of me. :haha:
I was mining down at the bedrock level (finally managed to make a long shaft without lava pouring in) and saw my inventry started to be full, so I decided to head back up to store all the stone and stuff.
As I turned around and started running back, I saw a figure standing in the far side of the shaft. "Holy ****! Notch has sneaked "Him" (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Herobrine) to the game!".

It was a big bang :haha: Wasn't quite as controlled as I hoped it would be, other times I've tried detonations they've set one TNT off and not the others, so I put them closer together this time...that worked, but it also sent the TNTs next to them flying, so there was exploding TNT flying all over the place.

He's alive!
Calm before the storm?
Perhaps this is the calm before the storm, but I’ve got a nagging feeling I’ve just been neglecting the blog.
I am still alive, and I’m working hard. Not as hard as I should, mainly due to a cold and me having the apartment for myself this week (yay, coding in my underwear!).
We’ve signed the papers for the company, and we’ve found an office. We haven’t signed the office yet, but it’s perfect for us and as long as the owner wants us, we’ll take it. Mojang is now six people strong, three programmers, one pixel artist, one CEO and one Business Developer. It’s likely we’ll grow even more in the near future, but this will get us started nicely.
I was going to send a sneak preview of the Halloween update to a certain website last week for an exclusive preview, but I missed that date pretty bad. I will try to get that update out as soon as possible. The update is going well. There are six new block types (five of them have unique abilities), one new monster, a new dimension, and a couple of bug fixes. Once I get the portals working, I’ll have something very interesting going and I’ll spend the rest of the time leading up to the release adding new smaller features and polishing stuff.
And fixing bugs.

To the right of the player is a Taiga (mostly over the ocean), to the left is either a Forest, or Woods, I can’t remember. In the distance is probably tundra.
Remaining work on biomes include letting them change the elevation (deserts, plains, tundras and swamps should all be flat), and changing the grass color depending on the biome type. The border between frozen biomes and not frozen ones will get way nicer.
The sky color changes slightly depending on how cold the area you are in is.
:yeah:
Copy Pasted from MC Forum, SOMEONE had to do it:
Who's excited for this? Pain Forest sounds like intense levels of manly-awesomeness, the likes of Minecraftians have only dreamed of thus far. What are your theories as to how this biome will operate?
As the graph indicates, the Pain Forest seems to be in a max precipitation, max temperature environment. I predict that the region will periodically experience a TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR of blood. Only the MANLIEST of men (probably those from Australia) will be able to withstand the intense acidity [sic] of the blood rain. Potentially, less-than-manly Mincraftians could utilize corrosion-resistant GOLDEN ARMOR to shield themselves.
The intense heat and awesomeness will be too great for the weak wooden structures that lesser men create, causing all wooden creations to INSTANTLY BURST INTO FLAMES. Even TREES will be unable to brave the awesome heat, and instead, only the super-manly IRON-TREES will find the willpower to grow in the Pain Forest and can only be harvested by a DIAMOND AXE.
Also, any water in the area will INSTANTLY EVAPORATE through processes only understood by SCIENTISTS and some THEOLOGIANS. Zombies in the area will have the skin melt away and only their SKELETONS will remain, and they'll shoot ARROWS from their STERNUMS. Spiders in the area will inexplicably grow TWICE THEIR SIZE, and maybe shoot fire, FROM THEIR THORAX [sic]. Creepers will still explode as usual, but their suicide will also release a LAVA SPRING from their REMAINS. Skeletons will mostly remain the same, except that their arrows will now BURST INTO FLAMES since they're made of wood. Your own arrows will tend to do the same. I think we can agree that this is AWESOME.
Sheep will INSTANTLY BURST INTO FLAMES, due to the high flammability of their wool coats. Only the manliest of sheep will remain, those with coats of PURE DIAMOND. Except these Diamond Sheep aren't DOCILE. Instead they will give up EVERYTHING in an attempt to KILL YOU. AND YOUR FRIENDS. They don't eat grass, they eat FIRE. These Sheep will shoot LASERS from their EYES. Also they can glide do to INEXPLICABLE means.
Pigs will spawn FULLY COOKED and ANGRY. They will lung at you and can jump FOUR METERS into the AIR. They will also GLARE at you disconcertingly from a DISTANCE. This will probably make unmanly men feel UNCOMFORTABLE. Manly men, however, will KICK THOSE PIGS' ASSES.
Cows can be milked for LAVA, but only if you're man enough to get close to them, since they are now equipped with a SHOTGUN. Their shot gun fires FLAMING BULLETS. Cows are dangerous and on a mission of VENGEANCE.
There are no chickens in the Pain Forest. Instead, chickens will have evolved into flying DRAGONS. Dragons breath FIRE through processes described as SCIENCE and HERESY. These dragons are MEAN, but are actually PRETTY COOL GUYS once you get to know them. But to get to know them, you have to RIDE THEM with a SADDLE, not in the SEXUAL WAY because that'd be GROSS.
Caves in this region would be DANGEROUS, filled with large amounts of LAVA and DEATH. When torches run out, THEY EXPLODE. The caves are lined with pockets of ADMINIUM (or whatever you dudes decide to call it). Inside the adminium are smaller pockets of DIAMOND, but you can't get to them because you are not MANLY ENOUGH since you're not AUSTRALIAN, unless you are, in which case you need BETTER EQUIPMENT. Dungeons in the region will be MAZE LIKE with TRAPS, possibly LASERS. There will also be deposits of coal, but they'll be on FIRE. Iron and gold will have been pre-smelted in the AWESOME HEAT. Redstone deposits may infact shoot LASERS even though that's IMPLAUSIBLE. But hey, so is Redstone IN GENERAL. There will also be deposits of TNT, which will explode when you PISS IT OFF. You can piss it off by being smug about being manly, or being RACIST. TNT HATES racism.
Grass won't grow in the Pain Forest, since it would just BURST INTO FLAMES, or evaporate. Instead, the ground will be covered by the blood of LESSER MEN. Flowers that grow on this blood will want to KILL you, but will be unable to because they're FLOWERS. The sun doesn't shine in the Pain Forest because it's too afraid that the Pain Forest will kick its ASS. It's probably right. The moon, however, does rise, but it's RED and will shoot LASERS, that teleport you to the HELL DIMENSION which could potentially be on the MOON next to the DRACULA MOON BASE [source]. As it turns out, Dracula is a GOOD NEIGHBOR.
Anyway, this sums up my theories regarding the Pain Forest. I'm look forward to see what Notch does with this. My theory is that the Pain Forest is the ideal dwelling for HEROBRINE. Or at least it was, but he was too UNMANLY to survive and DIED EMBARRASSINGLY, which is something he REGRETS.

I'd certainly hope so :D
Framework is in place, just need to load it up and let the tribute begin. I'll probably do this around 2000Z tomorrow. It should be quite impressive and the ultimate end to the map.
Arc, is there any chance that tomorrow morning or afternoon you could send me a copy of the map over? I've just got to put the finishing touches to the Atlantis Project and then I'll be ready. :salute:

I was going to ask if the server was going to be mapped before you did the update. I'm curious as to how my folly looks from space.
Right, I think that's about it on the Atlantis Project:

Okay, after 31 pages, I give up.
What is Minecraft? I've registered an account though not purchased it, have watched this thread, watched youTube clips, read blogs about it, but I'm not sure I understand anything at all about it!
Let me write what I think it is and you guys tell me how close or far off I am with maybe a better description.
Okay here it goes:
You are a miner, and you have tools to work with, and you build a mine or something similar to uncover precious metals to build things. Then there are creepers who like to disrupt your mining and building of things and destroy or try to anyways.
You got the general idea right.
Basicly it's a pure sandbox game, there's no story, no objectives, no other NPCs (except the monsters and cows, pigs etc.), just what you decide to make of it. Like a virtual Lego set, except better. :DL
Arclight
10-29-10, 01:50 PM
It's like asking "what is Super Mario?".
Minecraft isn't one of those big-budget titles that focus on graphics and story-telling. It's more of a throwback to old-school gaming. The only way to answer "what is Minecraft? " is with "Fun."
Game generates random world, though not "random" random; it makes sense and can be quite beautifull. The world consists of blocks, which you can mine. You can use those to make things; wood makes sticks, sticks and coal make torches, etc. Then throw in a handfull of (nasty) enemies to add a survival component and you've got Minecraft.
Mind you, it's an alpha: plenty of stuff will be added, including a narative to tie it all together and drive a player forward.

Is there anyway to choose which player you spawn as? I think I had 15 stacks of stone, a lot of iron, and some gold on my person when this save was made, and it'd be a shame to lose it all.

The hole must be 2 wide and 3 high (or was it 4), then just use flint and steel to light a fire to the bottom block.
Think it needs to be a bit taller and then you set fire to the bit in the middle.

The giant holes are from me looking for desert. My traveling was a bit eradicate. Also the giant snow area on the top of the picture was also from me.
Looking closer at the map, that small hole in the bottom of the map isn't there. It's really a small lake and some mountain.
Anyways, for those who have portals and monsters turned on. Beware, Ghasts can spawn in any 5x5x5 spaces around portals. Which means they can spawn outside of hell.
