The track to the right is the original line coming from Dowly's wall. I built Space Mountain a bit further down from that.

Space Mountain is not 100% reliable at the moment, lag can affect how much boost you get as can things like pickups or arrows on the line.

I'm going to modify it to produce maximum (but hopefully not game breaking) momentum, but ultimately it's a flawed design because due to the lag a series of boosters all the way along work a lot better than a single massive booster at the start.

Shame about the monorail Elco. I spotted it and had a quick poke about, it looked pretty epic.

Yeah, I'm still thinking about implementing it in the future, when I have it a little more thought out and have the time to do so. But for now, I need to work on the North Loop. I (and probably Krauts) am sick of being stuck in my place throughout the night.

To Nagy, I took the RFTS just now, and my ride pooped out I don't know how far from Dowlys place.. Don't know if its supposed to do that but.. yeah. I had left at dawn and the moon had just risen, if that gives you a sense of how long I was on it for.

By the way, when you go down space mountain, where does the track to the right go? Mine went left.


I rode the cart the other day and made it quite far, until I ran into a minecart on the track and lost my forward momentum. Had to walk to Dowly's. I was almost there when I ran into a skeleton, a couple spiders, and two creepers. I ended up dying and then a Skeleton on a minecart ran over my remains.

Okay lads, I just discussed this with Arc. One of the possible solutions for fixing the chunk errors and the lag is starting a new map.

We do not want to start a new map until we have a unanimous(or near) agreement on the matter. We do not want anyone to lose their project when they're not ready too.


So if you're in favor of a new map, say Aye.

If you're not in favor, say Aye.. I mean Nay. :O:

It would also help if you included any input on the matter, or why you voted for or against.






I, personally, would like a new map to fix the lag. I would like to finish Valkyrie(especially since she's looking epic on the map), but I find the lag and the chunk errors make the game unbearable at times.

I also want a new map for the sense of exploration you get on a new map.

I'd like to see what the next update brings (it might fix the problem), but if pressed my vote is Aye.

I've got no project in the works, and I think that a fresh map would let us spread out and plan better. I've got a few plans for a centralised farm and fort at the spawn, and now that we know the railways work it'd be nice for everybody to be able to build their projects with the knowledge that they might want to include a station.

Another note, if anyone is looking for something to do, I can use help with Valkyrie(Maybe we can finish her before new map as a group project). Stone, wood,torches(or coal) and smooth stone donations are appreciated.

I'm going to go exercise now, and then I have some work to do, but after that I'll lay out the skeleton for the rest of the ship, if anyone wants to contribute after that point, you can help by filling her in.

I will of course give credit where credit is due.

Think this update is large enough to warrant a new world. Don't think the 2 new blocks (if they are something you mine/harvest) are updated to existing chunks.

Also, Skeles seem to drop bones now, not sure what they're used for...

Bones can be turned into Bone meal, again, don't know why

Wonder what it's used for. :hmmm:

EDIT: "The new blue "ore" is the gem Lapis Lazuli, you can either make a block with it (same pattern as diamond, gold and iron blocks) or dye cloth blue by putting it next to a piece of white cloth in the crafting grid!"

Looks like the other block is a Dispenser. No idea what that does.

The Data Values sheet also now references a sandstone...

I guess it'll take a day or two for the wiki to update with all the information, Notch really should write better patch notes though.

But yes I agree, with this update it's time for a new map to make sure we get a decent distribution of the new blocks.

The dispenser drops/shoots out items you put in it. Stuff that is mean't to be "shot" (arrows/snowballs/eggs) will be shot out of the dispenser, other items will just drop next to it. Water/lava bucket just drops the bucket, so can't do water/lava traps with it.

You will be, Arc will post the map up, it will probably be a few hundred meg though, and then you drop it in a folder marked 'World X' (X being a number of a world space you haven't used yet in your Singleplayer, in the C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\.minecraft\saves location, and then Hey Presto, it's ready for use. I still have the last map in Singleplayer with my Crystal Palace. :smug:

I cast my vote as a Aye.

Not bothered about when we start a new map. But as I have discussed with Keab (Nagy), I think the new spawn point should be made into a combined Fort Newbie and Train station with tracks leading North, East, South and West for easy travelling. Also the public lines built underground to ease mob attacks on them especially as Spider's can now climb!

I was thinking the same thing for spiders. It will work perfectly for buildings, but won't do so well if the spider can jump on top of the overhang, so rail lines will need high walls., Underground or covered might be better.

Of course now we can also colour code our lines...

You know when you've been tango'd....

Apparently there are Pine and Birch trees added. I'm guessing the small leaves are from one of those, but it looks like the biome data is messed up for that piece of forest.

The wiki is generating a nice detailed list of all the changes. Looks like Notch has broken more than he's fixed again though.

The fact that spiders can now climb actually works with my new Castle design.

Ideally I want to dig down to bedrock and have a giant pit. In the center will be my castle. Gaping the pit will be a bridge.

That's actually what I want to do. Just with a castle/tower instead of a city. Thought of maybe putting 2-3 layers of water in the bottom, but I think it may be better to just let things fall to their death.

Especially if I rig the bridge to blow upon a certain combination being entered somewhere within the castle. :hmmm:

Yes, that's how the mobspawners used to work, the type they spawn would show inside the cage. Did the thing actually spawn pigs?? :hmmm:

EDIT: Hmm... I think Notch changed the creepers slightly. In my SP game, I was duking it out with a creeper, I once got too close to it and heard the SSSSSSS sound, but it didn't explode. 5 seconds later, I got too close again, but instead of the SSSSSSSSS sound it just blew up the moment I got to the "sssss-range". :hmmm:

Minecraft Beta 1.2_01 (less bugs, more framerates)

This update affects both the client and the server, but the server update isn’t mandatory. I highly suggest updating, though.
* Fixed various blocks acting really weird when placed (rails, torches, and more)
* Optimized performance
* Added a new painting that we forgot to include yesterday
* Reduced spawn rates a bit
* Fixed a whole pile of lighting bugs
* No more ghosts at night
* Added a temporary fix to get rid of chunk visibility errors
The last one is interesting.. The problem with chunk visibility errors was that for some reason the “dirty” flag on chunks and the list of “dirty chunks” got out of synch. There wasn’t time to try to do a proper fix today, so I just made the client check a couple of dirty chunks per frame to make sure they’re in the list.
So until we fix it proper, you might get invisible chunks, but they will fix themselves after a second or two, usually way before you even get close to them.


Should be interesting to see if that actually solves our chunk error problem.

Just realized how close I am to the spawn. I blame Keab for giving me false knowledge. Hopefully I can make my pit without cutting anyone short. Just know that the pit is 128blocks on each side, with 8 sides.

If you haven't gotten too far ahead with it. There's another flat area a reasonable walk due North of the spawn.

And yes, cooking that many animals made an interesting noise...

79,108.95 meters West/North West of the spawn belong to me.

It's about 60% mapped out, but just giving a heads up.

It's a perimeter of 1024 meters.


Edit the measurement of 79,108.95 is the area of the top layer.

Edit2: Assuming bedrock is 250 levels down(I think that's the number) I'm looking at 19,777,237 blocks. give or take. The center city/castle will be big, and I'll just leave the infrastructure in place.

I got onto the new map today to start working on getting my supplies and start working on our 'city' but I can't get doors to open, they split in two the top and bottom start alternating between closed and open so that I can never open them. Bug? Anyways I got frustrated with it and stopped playing for now.

plant any blocks from one block down from the surface, then fill up the water. So, you can dig it off and the water will drop as it will fill up.

For some reason I'm having trouble connecting to my MC account.. Not my internet connection as I'm posting here.. what the hell :s

Edit: Deleted the minecraft.jar and rebooted, now getting the loading screen with the message Now Updating, paused loading bar with the statement done loading.

Edit2: Just put all .jar files back from trash and it works.. -.-'

I am currently laying claim to the islands due West from Spawn on the new map (if you look on the online map, its the island chain right near the end of unexplored area.

I have an area south of spawn, it's got a large wall around it...which does nothing against the countless spiders and creepers that spawn inside the walls, but eventually I will be building around there and under there so please refrain from tunneling under it...Task Force, I'm looking at you.

I think the only thing we were using the site for was the map, and without Dowly attempting to break things by finding the edge of the map it should be possible to post static ones again.

I am currently laying claim to the islands due West from Spawn on the new map (if you look on the online map, its the island chain right near the end of unexplored area.

Let me know when lag dies down in the server though..

I'll have to check where you are, but I've already layed claim to a giant portion of the land west of the spawn.

I just strolled through my claimed area and I don't think I saw you're hut. I may be farther west. If you start at spawn and go directly west, you'll see a marker made out of dirt, 1 stone, and two torches that I made. the line it follows cuts through two hills one to the north and one to the south, that's my area give or take. Each side is 128 blocks, so far the south, Southeast, Southwest, West, and Northwest have not yet been marked.

Yeah I can't get anything accomplished, right now with the current opening a door then teleporting back and opening it again, or digging and then the blocks reappearing over and over.. think I'm gonna take a little break from MC until this plague eases up.

He said it might be tricky though, possibly because the lag is bad enough as it is without the server running a cartographing programme in the background.

We asked for it so that we can start mapping out people's claims so that there is no conflict.

My problem is I can't find my claim.. I had built a cabin on the main island I wanted, and the two smaller ones were within visual distance.. but now I cant find it.. I know its west but I don't remember the land marks.

Edit: Maybe run it once a month when no one is on the server at a certain time?

Cute, My cactus wall was very effective in stopping them (and killing them) as well. But you need cactus and sand to do it.

The web server is struggling, we’re migrating
Once again, minecraft.net is more popular than the poor old server can keep up with, so we’re upgrading. I’m not quite sure how long it will take to get done as it’s mostly Tobias doing the work (thank you, sir!). We’ve got a huge amazon cloud server which we’re moving the main server to. We’ll be able to replicate this as demand grows, and we’ll have a load balancer set up in front of it all. Skin downloads will almost certainly be migrated to S3 downloads instead of going through resin as it does now, and we’ll have a separate server just to handle game logins and auth requests.

In other news, we spent the day today out of the office in various cafés, as the floor was getting fixed. And we got the Machinima.com IGA awards! They’re pretty!

If you want to see some pics from the office and Mojang in general, Carl has a photo album here. It gets updated every now and then.

For Minecraft development, we’re working on the new file format, and a new game launcher. The file format is still in early testing, but it’s looking somewhat promising, except for it taking up a bit too much space. It’s faster, though.
The new Launcher will be a bit prettier, will show release notes and other news, will send login requests over https (finally), and will ask if the user wants to update to the latest version or not. In the future, we’ll add support for playing the previous installed version (after warning the player that there might be unexpected bugs) and the ability to choose what work directly to save the level files, but that’s not coming in this version.

We’ve got a meeting planned for tomorrow with some community members to discuss how to best implement the modding.

Used PixelMap for this one. Cartograph doesn't seem to allow a path for source, and some of the others I tried just were a pita. Like supprting commandline function, but not detailing the possible options in a readme or forum thread. This is just the first thing I found that runs from a .bat without inducing rage.

Yeah, I believe he has a rather large labyrinth underground. He was remarking that one of his tunnels had the possibility of entering my territory.

2) Yeah, I've already got a large mine shaft going straight south. Going to make sure not to branch off to the west as much as possible, but I may get turned around.

3) There's a tiny cobblestone shack thing just west of the snowy isthmus SE of my boat. You can kind of see it on the border between the snow, sand, and grass. The mineshaft pretty much goes straight south from there.

Yeap, I'm mainly going to be moving within 280' to 350' of my current islands. That being said, if I do fence/wall off large areas of land, the wall itself will be fairly low (6-8 blocks high) and will have a few gates through which you can pass. Also, the outlying lands will probably have a few cabins for safe haven and little other lighting, whilst lands closer to me will have more lighting and cabins.

The reason I am doing this, is that so both myself, and any traveller who wishes to explore, travel in these areas has a few safe havens to rest/wait the night out. Naturally, when I say my 'lands' I do not mean I am going to be building over every square meter, but rather it is simply land I would prefer others not to build huge structures on.

I'll take the door off the Animal Sanctuary, that's not a problem. Bank isn't in use at the moment but we'll have to look into why it's doing that.

I never knew where, or who's cabin it was so I couldn't go repair it. Figured once the map came out and someone said they had damage I'd go and repair/repay them. Problem being, the frequent CTDs have kept me off MC for a bit..

If you need reparations I will repay you the next time I'm on.

The structure you are referring to is Shack 1. My northern most supply/safety thing.

Don't bother worrying about it, I repaired the damage with dirt, and the structure wont exist for very long anyways as it is in the area that will be a giant hole.

I actually thought the damage was my fault, due to lag.

Someone mirrored his shack, and then apparently he burnt it down.

Tree Farm atop Mt Commie is complete and has been christened "Lenin's Arboretum", access it from the staircase next to Bank Station.

It looks very imposing and communistical from the outside, but I think you'll like the little touches I've added to it on the inside.

Arc, it was made using summoned goods, but as it's for the common good I figured it was OK.

The tree farm has two rules.

1) Replant anything you cut down.

2) No Fires.

You'll find there are chests in the entrance if you want to donate any surplus to the common good.

You should also now be able to access Comrade MacDonald's Animal Sanctuary, currently only operating at night... :s

From what I could tell, the whole entrance and entrance hall was moved. The fire was me, lava didn't agree with my wooden dining hall. :nope:

Ow and the whoever-it-was left a note saying "Renovation by your friendly neighbours :D".

Really would like to know who it was, no I wouldn't let my sword do the talking, but just to see someone take responsibility. :hmmm:

Ah, I'll lay my head to the chopping block I guess. It was me, was simply meant as a practical joke. The original intent was to simply take your diamonds and make you go on a little scavenger hunt for them, but I could not find them. Heck, I could hardly even find your place altogether. Then, acting the the suggestions from some other players, your entrance hall was flipped (to the best of my ability to remember it after nearly dying twice fending off the monsters outside). I didn't mess with anything that could be broken, hence you had two little pathways outside.

I hope you're not too pissed, "it was just a goof..."

Got the game yesterday, already hooked, started on single player at the moment, to get the hang of building/crafting etc, but within 1 hour I had a shelter built and started mining, and its getting a bit large. Next plan to build a proper homestead with the by-product of my mining exploits and maybe even a watch tower.

Would like to join you on-line. Not very skilled, but i'm sure I can help.

(So far i'm about 60 blocks in, and have found only 10 coal and 6 Iron)

Your sir have met your first creeper. The downfall of many a minecrafter before you. They're actually green pigs. They make a SSSSSS sound before exploding. It's the same sound TNT makes. So if you hear that sound try to run away.

Eh they are not that deadly, just <censored> annoying. I often would have fun with them using nothing but a lighter on the last map.

If you see them coming, sure. But they tend to sneak up on you when you're out punching trees or something, in which case the SSSSSSSSSS comes as a total, last-minute surprise... right before splattering you and your possesions across the building you were working on, taking a sizeable chunk out of it and the surrounding terrain in the process.

Creepers are nasty.


And the map will be available, but for the moment it makes every PC I work on run out of memory. The data for the map that was on the site got stored in the same folder. It's some 5GB spread over 74k files that I need to remove somehow...

I'll PM you the details. Should be some shelter nearby, and you're free to use the crafting table and furnace. If you need any tools, torches or food to get you started, there should be some stuff laying around.

(really you pratically spawn on the doorstep of the shelter, if no one else went build-crazy in the mean time)

Pretty much don't be an a hole, leave other people's stuff and territory alone, and try to fix any accidental (read creaper) damage you cause to other people's stuff when visiting.


Anyhow it's rare I get bushwacked by creepers, except when its night (or on hills). But I always keep a sharp lookout when working outside. Downside is if you don't spot them, its nigh impossible to react before the go boom.

But I still say they are loads of fun to set on fire (or drown, or blow up, or drop off a cliff, or train them in front of a skeleton, or all the other ways I kill them for fun).

Fire also works way better than melee online, as the mobs will lag hit/blow up (sometimes even through things and other impossible ways that don't work offline).

Found a nice spot E of spawn point, and started prospecting. Yet to find any coal/iron ore, so guess I'll have to keep on digging. Any tips for defending/hints my mine would be usefull.

Instead of digging from top to bottom, dig straight down to levels 5-15 (hold F3 and the Y tells you which level you are on). I'd suggest you gather some wood, make tons of ladders and start digging straight down, 2x1 shaft so you always have a block to stand on to prevent falling into a underground cave.

At levels 5-15, you can find all ores that are in the game from coal to diamond.

You are familiar with the pickaxe restrictions when it comes to higher value ores? (iron pick or better to mine diamonds, diamond to mine obsidian etc.)

Ladders are faster, especially if you risk it and go down 1x1 shaft. ;)

It's more economical to use the staircase. 2 trees of wood and a staircase will get you diamond quicker.




As for creepers, I think I've only died once from a creeper. I had a creeper go off in my face the other day and I survived with 2-3 hearts left.

Gone for the dig straight down with ladders mining technique. Future plans include a hill-side house with crops growing in front of the house.

I never dig straight down myself, always do a spiral 5x5 (and then put a hole straight down the middle). 2 reasons why, 1 so i don't accidentally dig straight down into lava, and 2 i run a track down the spiral.

Dig 9x9 myself, but that's because I like to do level dropouts at different depths for cobble mines, coal mines, and the big bottom tunnels. I might just try to run a spiral up the tube though with minecarts running up and down... What's the ratio a powered minecart can push you up an incline?

1vertical x 2 horizontal? or is it 1x1?

When I dug down, I did it in stages so wouldn't have a very long ladder. Eventually found a cave with Redstone and some lava. House buildings going well, added a "kitchen" extension and got some wheat growing, but got interrupted by a creeper that blew it up! So had to rebuild that:nope:.

I could do that, but then I have to chop the wood and craft it and put it up.

With the minecart I have to mine out the area for the tracks, craft the tracks, craft the cart, mine fuel for the other cart and craft another cart...

And.... I've finally worked out what my project will look like when it's 100% done.

The black circle is what my tower will look like. The yellow, will be the actual rooms.

Levels B1-4 will be storage B5 will be a forge, B6 will be a tree farm, B7 will be a general farm, and B7 will be a animal farm. Levels 1 through Skylimit will be random things, mostly just empty space. Somewhere in there there will be a trainstation(probably ground level).

The outside will be smooth stone to bedrock, and the general shape will look something like the Citadel from Half Life 2. I may have rooms of pure indulgence from all the minerals I find.
