Explored it a bit which resulted in island hopping, never saw any "mainland". Just 1 small tree along the way.Confirmed, not much more than an archipelago
Ah, I hadn't quite gotten as far as a boat yet. Maybe not great then...
Well, ocean biomes are supposed to end somewhere too. You never know what's in the next chunk.

True enough. Maybe have a fly about in creative mode and see how it develops. :hmmm:
Would make for a more challenging start.

I flew over 1000 blocks away and am still in the middle of a ocean.
One problem I am seeing is the volcanoes spawn and fill with obsidian under the top lava.
Other than that It could be interesting to have creative on for the first day or so we could make platforms? I did that two maps ago and it was pretty interesting.
Have your platform over water, with a shaft down the center to get to your mine.
^ Err.. how do you propose we get stuff like wood and other somewhat important
thingamalings if we are in the middle of an ocean? :O:

Get a supply of saplings the first day and use forestry/make a tree farm.

Cacti? Wool? Food? Dyes? Bees? Sand (in large quantities)? etc etc. :hmmm:

Farm, Wool farm, Farming, nether/farm/spawn in first day/good question, never used bees/ Oceans have sand under them.
Thing is, it depends you you want a map you have to actually try hard at and have to make due, or do you want a normal map (which I am tired of, plains, swamp, desert, what ever happened to those cool mountain biomes a few maps ago.) where everything you need is there you just have to look a bit.
(PS if we could find a map with a mountain biome in it id be happy with that too.)

What are bees for?
Also, starting in an ocean biome actually sounds kind of cool. Makes it easier to get lost, and thus spread us out quite a bit. Only thing is, connecting each others areas will be difficult (if building underwater) or cumbersome (building over water/around land).
Anyways, I always did enjoy playing in Ocean Biomes because of one mod (can't remember the name, it's on my laptop). I believe they had it in IC2, but basically you built your craft (ie: Ship, out of materials, placed a controller block and controlled the craft via keyboard shortcuts (which worked only on the craft). This made travelling in a massive ship across vast oceans a lot funner then in your little.. erm. Wood.. thing.)

Hmm, mystcraft (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/918541-125-mystcraft-09102/)I (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/918541-125-mystcraft-09102/%29I) cant remember if it is SMP compatible, assuming it is we could have our main base in the Normal world and have our sub projects in myst worlds.
Mystcraft's nice, used it for a long time in 1.2.5. :yep:
Not sure about SMP compatibility atm, but it's coming. The dev is taking part
in Direwolf20's SMP let's play (along with bunch of other mod authors) and they are
using a beta of it on their server.
I'm all for it, not sure if Arc is, tho. It's going to need some management as every
age is a whole new world and in SMP part of every world is loaded all the time,
so unused worlds would have to be deleted every once in a while. :yep:
BTW, Pahimar mentioned during one episode of the SMP thingy that Equivalent
Exchange 3 will be heavily balanced with IC, BC, RP and Forestry in mind.

LAND AHOY!!! -x -z about 1.2K blocks
Arc, last map dump you asked for suggestions for mapping software. Keep this on your radar:

Works pretty good for SSP. I guess SMP too. Next update should bring more options to customize block color. (and a world folder list :sunny:)

This I do like. :yep:

Task Force approves, a lot of mods I wanted on too.
I presume it is Industrialcraft 2 that is in the pack. And not the first edition. It seems everything is in it that we used to have, and more.
I do hope we can dispense with the block-ID and item-ID customizations in the sever config files. It would be great if they were standardized.

IC1 was replaced by IC2, so it would be IC2 in this pack.
I personally would be for this pack.
The FTB pack should be just download & install AFAIK, so unless we add more mods
there shouldn't be any need to fiddle around with the block-IDs.
And yes, that would be IC2.
What's the updating process like? Will they release regular updates or do we have to update every single mod? :hmmm:

That's a good question. :hmmm: I would think they update the whole pack once
there's enough updates for the invidual mods.
Direwolf20's saying the pack might be ready "early September", so guess we
find out soon enough.
EDIT: Actually, I think they are making a own launcher for it, which would be very handy.
I tried the Tekkit pack which also has it's own launcher and it automatically updates all the
necessary mods.

Got time to play this more once again. Seems the server is empty most of the time when I've looked in the server list.
Seems there has been some new additions to the game since I played it previously.
Anyone using the GLSL shaders for 1.3.2? I can't seem to install it for some reason.
The installer goes through it without errors, but there's no changes to minecraft.jar. :hmmm:

The installer goes through it without errors, but there's no changes to minecraft.jar. :hmmm:According to the threads first message it is still only for 1.3.1. So maybe the installer does a check for specific files in the Jar and does a CRC check on it. But then you'd expect a warning of some sort.

Yup, that was kinda the first place I checked. :O:
There is a 1.3.2. fan version towards the end of the thread.
Well, it's not an official release. And the reported problems in the thread make it show. There are several of suggestions though why it may not be working. Nvidia not supported, Optifine required, dirty minecraft folder. Personally, I don't like the auto-installer-only method. I'd like to know what exactly it changes with the minecraft files. And it probably won't mix with multiMC launcher/mod-manager.
Yup, I'm well aware of the problems, but none of them concern me as my problem
is that the bloody installer refuses to actually install stuff. :)

Well if you create too many worlds in one play through it can mess up your save, was creating my 5th world when it crashed and was stuck in a world that was permanently night, super flat with raging lightning. Not cool.
Ah, well that sucks.
The only problem I had with the 1.2.5. version were the cave worlds. They
would slow Minecraft down to .000000000000000000001 frames per second
when I first entered them.
Tho, that issue seems to be fixed now.

I meant double performance in general. It's nearly twice as fast. Although if MC isn't multithreaded, wouldn't the best server be a dual or single core at around 4.0ghz?

Dual would do it probably, but once you get to Sandy/Ivy Bridge-based Xeon the fastest chips are all quads.
Whether it is actually better to have more cores depends on the application. You can't determine a CPU's capabilities by only looking at core count. Same reason there wasn't a point to getting a quad for gaming a few years ago, and there's no point having more than 4 today.
And yeah, I was only looking at it within the context of running MC. I'm funny like that.

It may be 26 USD, but if you view every hour you played it adding up to 1 USD, I think most of us here have played it for at least a few hundred hours and for more than 2 years now. So it's a bargain to me at that price (although I did buy it Pre Beta when it was on sale). Also the mods for it make it even more value for money.

Might I put forward the suggestion that we start a new SMP map now then with the pre-rel 1.4? I can't see there being that much different between the pre-rel and the release that will require a new map.
Thoughts? I think we've played this map out to its logical conclusion...although I would politely request that Arc PMs me the map file so I can add more to my little village when I think of it. :yep:

What's the state of the pre-release? I mean, new blocks and such that need to be added and stability mainly. If it's still rather buggy I'd rather wait, and I'd prefer to avoid a situation where we have to open up new chunks for certain things to apear in-game.
I've used the snapshots for awhile and they seem to be pretty stable as far as I can tell. Don't know what is still missing, a lot of the features seem to be in.
Can't check atm, at school, being busy... stupid Netflix not working here. :nope:
EDIT: List of chunk related stuff that is currently included in the pre-release:
-Bats
-Swamp Huts & Witches to live in them
-New Slime Spawning (swamps)
-Wither Skeletons (Nether Fortress)
-Carrots & Potatoes (Villages & Jungles)
Think that covers all the planned stuff for 1.4(?) :hmmm:

"a lot more" as in "it crashed before but not as often"? :06:

I guess "a lot more" isn't quite right, since it never crashed before. I've been getting crashes on my server after setting it up with the 1.4 prerelease.
From the crash report "Descripion: Exception in server tick loopjava.lang.OutofMemoryError: Java heap space"
I'm getting this placing redstone lamps, never had a problem with them before.
It might be that I'm running the server on a 32 bit copy of Windows 7? This is just an acer laptop after all. I set it up so a few friends and I could work on a large project in creative, haven't had any problems running it almost continuously since June.
1.4 pushed to 25th, 1.4.1 pre-release today instead:
http://mojang.com/2012/10/minecraft-1-4-1-pre-release/
day -1 patch! Lovely! No but seriously, there was a big issue
causing mobs to suffocate and fall through wooden floors that we really
needed to fix. The full list of fixes are…
Fixed mobs glitching through wooden floors
Fixed players glitching through Beacons
Fixed Redstone Repeaters getting stuck in ‘on’ state
Bats spawn less frequently
A number of minor font fixes
Activated the Wither painting
Fixed wet wolves looking way too scary
Tweaked naming costs in the Anvil
Tweaked enchantment points reward for smelting
Fixed bug that allowed any item to be placed in the armor slots
Fixed mob spawners spawning too quickly
Since we do these pre-releases mainly to prepare modders and server
admins (and not to find and fix bugs), we’ve decided to push the release of
1.4(.1) one day to Thursday, October 25. Again, since I know this is a lot
of text to read:

Nope. Did take half a day for it to make the calculations. They really need to make it use multiple cores.

This brings up an interesting question - I have an 8 core server running - does Minecraft only use one core regardless?
Arclight
10-24-12, 06:49 PM
Last I've heard they split off chunk saving, so it's kinda multi-threaded. Not sure how much progress they made towards threading the thing the past 6 months, nothing else I'm aware off. Some of the mod frameworks (Bukkit and such) implemented some of their own tweaks to improve multi-core performance.
When Obe nuked the map though 1 core was sitting maxed out with the others not doing much at all, so at least at that point there wasn't much support to speak of.

+ Added /difficulty, /spawnpoint, /weather, /gamerule and /clear commands
+ Added “target selectors” for commands
+ Added option to hide capes
+ Added option to toggle vertical synch
+ Added customization to superflat worlds
+ Minor additions to the world generator
+ New potion recipes
+ Leather armor can be dyed
* Maps now start more zoomed in, and can be extended
* Redstone repeaters can now be set into a “locked” position
* New sound effects
* Portals to the Nether can now transport items and mobs
* Adventure mode now allows placing and removing blocks, but only when using the correct tools
* Changed method of placing sideways wood logs
* Improved server list
* Improved debug (F3) options
* Spawn protection is now automatically disabled if there are no defined admins
- Removed Herobrine
And few things for those who haven't been keeping up with the changes:
Maps have changed so that they now have different zoom levels, to make a bigger
map place the map in the center of the crafting grid and surround it with paper. Maps work with item frames.
Books are now made by placing a piece of leather to the corner of a crafting
grid and surround it with 3 paper.
Max enchanting level is 30, so you only need one layer of books around the
enchanting table instead of two.
F3+H enables/disables debug stuff. When enabled, if you hover over a tool,
it tells you how much durability it has left. For maps, it tells the current zoom level.
Goddamit he removed Herobrine again.... :nope::nope::nope::nope:

I was thinking... we could do a "gate room" in the Nether;
Gates will always connect to their closest counterpart in the other realm. But that difference technically only has to be 1 block. It should be possible to have a large number of gates in the Nether close together but connecting to overworld gates large distances apart. :hmmm:
We would need a central location to work from, but with some basic math we should go a long way.
* actually, might work best between just 2 people... these things really need an option to just pair them.

Right, the Enderman farm is ready enough to be used. Coordinates to the stronghold here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1953580&postcount=4131).
When you go through the End portal, the path to the trap should be on your
left (ladders leading down). The Endermen have only half a heart left after the
drop, so you only need to punch them once. There's also an enchanting table
with enough books for lvl30 stuff as well as an enderchest for those who use them.
The way out of the End is back where you entered the End, head up the stairs
and follow the cobblestone+torch markers.
I'll probably add few more spawning layers to the trap, but as it is, you go from lvl0
to lvl30 in about 2 minutes.
EDIT: Oh, might want to be careful when crossing the walkway. Just got knocked off
by an angry enderman and lost probably a good 45 diamonds worth of stuff. Huzzah!

That's the big question. There's no mods being used at the moment, and I don't know whether it'd be right to switch over to a modded server so soon after starting a new world in vanilla.

Waiting on RP I suppose. Still think the modpacks are ridiculous so would prefer our own selection, but we'll have to see.
You can add mods like Optifine, NEI, Rei's Minimap, Forge, texturepack to your minecraft. At least, so far I got away with adding them. Arc's server didn't complain. But no mods that contradict with the way the server handles the world. So, anything that introduces new blocks, items or mob interaction would be a no-no.
I like the idea of trying out FTB on the server. My short stroll into a private FTB world shows much more biome variety. But perhaps it is better to hold off until Redpower and/or EE has been added to it. As it could require a new world to be effective.
Also, I prefer FTB as a modpack since the mods are assembled to be compatible. But it's up to Arc, as he would need to do the server maintenance.

In its defence, the whole idea behind FTB is that you just download and install one thing, like HSFX for IL2, and then the whole lot is updated rather than having to install separate updates. That's what I get from it.
So maintenance would be rather low, I'm not sure but I'd guess that they'd have also streamlined the installation process a fair bit too so it shouldn't be too tricky to install.
Installing FTB is just a matter of downloading the launcher and running Minecraft using it.
Everything is downloaded and installed for you.
Also, disabling/enabling mods is very much identical to JSGME.
Here's Direwolf's Spotlight showing how it works:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwxT87zMSFU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwxT87zMSFU)
So, if the the server is going to go modded at somepoint, I really dont see any
advantage of compiling our own mods as we did before. FTB includes all the mods
we've used and just so much less hassle. :hmmm:
Btw, the .JAR version of the launcher didn't work for me when I tested it last night,

It downloads minecraft to the folder you have the FTB executable in, so your
original Minecraft remains untouched and can be started normally via Minecraft.exe

Yea, I agree, we don't need them all. And some might even cause some headache,
like Mystcraft.
Tho, I'd keep the majority of them, as many tend to work the best when mixed
with other mods. Good exaple being EnderStorage, which is pretty much mandatory,

EE doesn't require anything generated by the world generator. Everything is made from vanilla objects or dropped by mods(as it stands now, but the mod maker would like to keep it this way).
If Eloraam would give us the world module, we could start our worlds now and just wait for the rest of the modules. But alas, she won't.
I'd personally prefer FTB over a mod pack we put together just for the simplicity. No more issues with wrong ID numbers, or wrong install order, etc.. Add for adding or removing mods from FTB, I think we should just leave it the way it is, as everything seems to be properly balanced for MP. Heck even EE3 is being balanced so it's not as OP as EE2.
The only mod I'd like seen added if it's not included in FTB, is TC3(although it'll probably end up in FTB).

Food production really isn't an issue anymore with Potatoes and Carrots added to the game(I also think animals give more meat than they used too, but I could be wrong). Forestry makes this easier with the automation of farms. Just with Vanilla, you really shouldn't starve to death anymore, and with Forestry included, if you do starve, you're doing something wrong.
As for shelter, the only way it's an issue is if you join the server at night, otherwise making a small shelter really shouldn't be a problem.
If you wait to get a small shack and a small farm going before you even think about touching the mod stuff, you should have no problem. As for the complexity of the mods, it's generally a good idea to stick with one mod and learn it's in's and out's, instead of trying to do everything at once.
If you try to dive headfirst into the mods without getting the bare necessities in place(the same ones you'd need in Vanilla MC as it is), you're going to get overwhelmed.
If you ever get lost or don't know what to do with a mod, Direwolf has spotlights for most, if not all, of the mods in FTB. He also covers most of the pods in his let's plays. Watch his SMP(which has all the FTB mods) one to catch up, or watch his older SSP one(will be slightly out of date). They're perfect for seeing how to combine the mods together.

Hah, well I must be unlucky. Every time I've joined the server to check it out, or try something I join at night and have no idea where I am. That and I don't like to make a shelter unless I've found a location that I want to stay in.
As for food, I don't know how to get carrots :wah: and the only animals I've seen on the server so far is Squids and a sheep :hmmm:
Carrots & potatos are found in villages or rarely in jungles.
If all else fails, punch the wild grass and get seeds. :yep:

If you don't like the area, just create a small hole until sunlight.
If you join the server while people are on, most would gladly throw some potato, carrot, melon, pumpkin, or wheat seeds your way.
You can also get cocoa from the jungle(used to make chocolate chip cookies), and you can get apples from the leaves of the regular trees. There is an abundance of food.
If you avoid sprinting and unnecessary digging, hitting, etc. your stamina doesn't deplete that fast, even on hard.
I've got loads of food in my castle, and some empty houses (thank you zombies) so if you want to set up a temporary residence there, you're more than welcome to. There's cows, sheep, pigs and chickens nearby, just be sure to leave at least two of each animal in the pen so we can repopulate.
I think by now most of us have a farm that is over-producing so food isn't really a problem. my advice is to always make sure you've got a reasonable stack before heading out spelunking.

Cheers! I wasn't aware you could get apples from trees and such. If it's OK with you Oberon maybe I'll stay in those shacks until I can get enough food and tools to strike out on my own. I'm planning on heading further East. I see a decent location on the map with a river nearby so I'm thinking of going there. Also, does fishing work now?
No probs at all mate.
So, I've just done a spot of digging underneath my town making room for the station from the railway line to Keabs from my place. I'd been up to the castle and down again to dispose of excess cobble in the lava bin, and everything was fine.
I walk into the castle, go into the bedroom area, put some ores in the oven to smelt, look up at the clouds going past, walk over to the...wait...what?
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/703/20121112014636.jpg
Well...****
It has to be a bug, like the text/lag bug. So I log out, and log back in...no dice, I still have a open view ceiling. Perhaps the blocks are just not showing...so I climb up to the top.
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/3263/20121112014720.jpg
Bloody hell, it's like someone's dropped a Tall Boy on it...
I jump onto one of the missing wooden blocks...and fall straight down two stories. Ouch.
Ok...perhaps it's just on my end. I call Task Force over Steam and he comes over to confirm that he can see the devastation too...
So, it would appear that my castle has had a slight combustion interaction...and unfortunately my recently acquired pet cat was sitting on the second floor...poor sod.
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/4127/20121112015311.jpg
SOCO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scenes_of_Crime_Officer) is working on two theories at the moment, the first is that the fire started above my lava bin on the ground floor, however the curious fact is that there are more surviving wooden blocks on the lower floors than on the roof. Which brings us to the second theory, that a lightning strike started the fire on the roof, this is backed up by myself hearing a close lightning strike during the last storm to go through (made that creeper like explosion sound) however it was some time after the storm, and several trips in and out of the castle before I noticed the issue.
Needless to say, the roof is now cobble and the lava bin has been...err...binned.
Wish I had been around to see it, could have tried to save the cat at least. Took bloody forever to get that creature. :wah::wah::wah:

There are loads of Ocelots roaming near my place so bring some Fish and have fun.

Condenser has been removed in EE3.
What features are in EE3? Is item X/Y/Z still around from EE2?
I haven't compiled a final list of what is in EE3 yet for the public, but here is the short list of what is in/out;
Red Matter has been removed
Collectors have been removed
Condensers have been removed
The Destruction Catalyst/Hyperkinetic Lens have been removed
The EMC system will remain, but it will be changed to accomodate new and more interesting mechanics
There will be a method to move EMC around in "wires"
More configuration options will be available to both players and server admins
EE3 will feature an API, which is not complete at this time
A transmutation system similiar to the Transmutation Tablet will exist, but is not ready to be disclosed at this time
These decisions were all made with balance in mind, and are not open to being changed. I need these things to happen in order to make this mod that much more fleshed out and fun. Trust me; you will love the end result.
That sounds a lot better.

Tekkit and FTB do the same thing, more or less but they don't contain the same mods. Also FTB has close connections with the modders whose mods are in the pack and it is supported by direwolf

Gotcha, just downloaded FTB and I'm liking it so far. Biggest thing missing from it from what I can tell is some of the EE stuff (the rings are part of EE if I'm not mistaken yes?)

And the mod authors. Something Tekkit won't be enjoying anytime soon. :O:
@Krauter: EE is not in the pack yet.

Yea that was what I was wondering about. That's crazy though, I thought it was because the mod packs author seemed to be an arse. That seals it for me at least. Yogbox and FTB will be my mod packs.

I think 1.4.4 has introduced a new 'feature', I'm having a lot of difficulty connecting to and staying on, the server.
EDIT: Bit more stable now...but there are little will-o'-the-wisps running around.
I'm getting lots of little flashes of what looks like fire.

Yeah, that's the will-o-the-wisps I was referring to, I think it's the torch burning animation, but it's flashing all over the place. A bit random.
Managed to play for about an hour or two earlier with no disconnect, so whatever was breaking it yesterday seems to have fixed it now.

Direwolf finished recording his RP2 spotlight, which we should get some time soon. Which means we should be getting RP2 soon too.
Most mods handle the change from 1.4.2 to 1.4.4 without hassle.

Q. ETA of Final Release.
A. Sometime between now and 15th May 3127:O:
Err.. the final release will have at least two mods in addition to RP2 that add
stuff to the worldgen: Thaumcraft 3 and XyCraft.
And according to the team, the beta version isnt meant for playing, so things
might change along the way that might force us to stick to the beta world or
start a new one.
EDIT: Oh and EE3, I believe adds stuff to the worldgen as well.
Feh. Mining near lava. Lagged. Then found myself transported into lava...

Someone said last night in the KerbalKon livestream, "I wonder what will come first KSP .18 or RP2".
Would've been hilarious if RP2 launched today.

EDIT: Hmm.. it shows the date of post as 1 December, that's weird, I made that post few minutes before this one.
EDIT2: Some news on RP2
<slowpoke> here is the news on RP
<slowpoke> There are 4 serious bugs left to resolve in Red Power 2. There has been no progress over the last week due to Eloraam being swamped with work in real life. Things have eased off now and Eloraam has returned to coding this weekend and hopes to have something ready for release soon.
And more FTB delays:
So I have recently received further news about the release of Red Power 2. It has apparently been decided that release of the mod has been delayed until after the 21st December 2012. Apparently there are fears that if Eloraam was to release now, the amount of data being downloaded at one time would effectively bring down the internet. This would lead to a chain of events that would cumulate in the end of world.
It is hoped that by delaying the upcoming release of Red Power we can avoid this disaster and may get to see a future where we finally get to a point where FTB can release a stable mod pack, the hard work of Pahimar and Soaryn isn't wasted and we all get to see the amazing looking Equivalent Exchange and Xycraft, and Notch and Jeb finally give the mod developers a few weeks to breathe by not releasing a new version or update to Minecraft (OK sorry, I admit it, the last one is a dream).
Anyways, you can all relax for the next few weeks, give your F5 key a much earned break and enjoy the awesome mods that are already out there.
I guess the world will come to an end... a minecraft world only though.

So are we going to be looking at a new world with some of the FTB Launcher mods for the new year?
Been playing some FTB Beta pack on SSP. Some of the new biomes are stunning. I reccomend paying a visit to Redwood or Autumn Trees biomes.
Yea, some of them are quite pretty. :yep:
Just tends to bog down my performance in some areas. :-?
Yea, some of them are quite pretty. :yep:
Just tends to bog down my performance in some areas. :-?Indeed, and I haven't even made any large machine compexes yet. I'm playing the mindcrack pack. It crapped out on me numerous times when generating the world in the beginning, and last time when waterflow reorganised on a slope due to removal of a source block. The FTB launcher log said the system couldn't keep up. :( But it works for the most part.
Using the Direworlf20 pack myself.
It's not surprising the new biomes cause performance hits, they tend to be
"busier" than the vanilla ones. :hmmm:
Etho mentioned that Optifine helped in his case, but havent tried that myself.
Some of the recipes have gotten a lot more complicated. Solar Panels look harder to make now.
Also there's tonnes of new ores that I have no clue what they're used for.
Think some of the stuff is due to gregtech. Mindcrack pack might have it,
it basically makes things harder to make.

Most of the new ores I think are still waiting for other mods to be implemented. Which is annoying as I have chests full of useless ore.
@Pisces Try tackling the Blazes with a Nano Suit. Will need a few tries to get all the blaze rods you need, as their fire will quickly deplete the suits energy.
I really dont see a need for the gregtech stuff, hence I use the DW20 pack that doesnt have it. :hmmm:
...

I only have a geothermal and macerator up and running upto now. Why couldn't they just leave it at refined iron.
I'm trying a direwolf mod pack world now. Finding lots of Magic-related items that I don't know what to do with.
I'm tempted to try editing together a pack of just the mods I want. (Basically the FTB pack without Gregtech at the moment)
I see the Quarry can take much more MJ than the 12 or so it used to.
Try powering it with a redstone energy cell and switch the output to 100MJ. :D

The Mindcrack pack seems to be pretty stable from what I've seen watching their videos.
I'd go ahead and disable the portal gun mod, the portals tend to lag. Besides,
they are so damn expensive at least in the DW20 pack that none of us will ever
have one, anywho. :)
Gregtech is a matter of taste, lots of recipes are more expensive with it enabled,
but it also adds a hefty bunch of powerful end game machines.
XyCraft imho can be disabled, don't really see a point of having it. :hmmm:
ExtraBiomesXL can cause lag on less powerful PCs, though Optifine seems
to help quite a bit.
The rest I'd keep, plenty of stuff to do. :yep:
Oh and check the video about them new Ender chests to know how they work:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rU9X2N1vMps
How one can disable mods server side? I have no idea.
EDIT: Actually, the PortalGun mod has other goodies in it. Like sentry turrets and stuff.

There may-or-may-not-be-but-most-definitely-is a server running the FTB Direwolf pack. It's set to creative and whatnot and is strictly temporary to see what we want to keep in, and how the server hardware handles the strain. Mainly that last bit, actual mods to be used depends on you lot and is up in the air for the most part.
