The feared news arrived. You are gone Dave, surely to a better place, because people like you have a place on heaven.

You have given so much to the comunity and you would be remembered here.
Thank you. May the Lord guide your sail to his place.
Rest in Peace Dave.

I will always remember him as one of the best people in this forum, and well, that means a lot in a fine community such as this one.

His work was outstanding, his dedication hard to match and his conversation always enriching, both in threads and in the private messages I shared with him.

Fair winds and calm seas to you my friend, I'll be on the lookout for you everytime I leave the harbor.

This is very sad news.

I always found Dave a friendly, thoughful and helpful person. I remember the first time I posted on these forums with a problem, Dave was full of suggestions and went out of his way to help out. I was touched that he would go to such trouble for a new guy.

He was a true gentleman of Subsim and I shall miss him dearly.

My thoughts will be with you and your family Dave.

Rest in peace my friend you are a class act.

I ask all Captains to pause for a moment during every Sunrise and Sunset in ROW as they remind us of Dave and his kindness. He created ROW as a gift for us to enjoy and we should remember him always.

damn - every time I see Dave's picture when I dial up subsim I see my cousin's face when he was younger. He was and is an aritist, his brother is a graphics artist, their dad was an art director for a TV station. They must have had some shared ancestor with Dave in the past. It is just uncanny.

To Daves family and loved ones . I only knew Dave thru his offerings to us as a modder on Subsim . I have always felt that one of the presious things you could give someone was your time . Dave did that for so many of us thru his modding work so freely offerd to us all . We will always and should remember those like Dave who do so much and share the work of their passon . Thanks Dave we are all better for knowing you .

It is impressive how there are people who were dealt with unfairly by life and may suffer through serious medical issues, yet you wouldn't notice it on them because they are busy with helping and furthering the joy of others.
There are only few people you meet on this elusive medium the internet is and can safely say they are an example for the best in men. I believe we can say that about Dave.

Psalm 23

A psalm of David.

23The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green [1] (http://www.christnotes.org/bible.php?q=Psalm+23#f1) pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest [2] (http://www.christnotes.org/bible.php?q=Psalm+23#f2) my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

God be with you....and with you family.

Ok, I have heard back from Francisco and he said a "plaque to hang with his other things would be nice and welcome." I will post more on this tonight when I get home, how to contribute, etc. My thoughts are to I'll set up a donation page where everyone who contributes will be listed and have a nice plaque made. Any donations in excess of the cost of the plaque will be donated to charity in Dave's name.

What kind of charity? How about some thoughts on that? Red Cross, or maybe some heart foundation, or USS Cavalla foundation, or ... ? I can also ask Francisco if he has a preferance. I think an appropriate 501c org of some type.

Neal

I will go with Francisco pref first and then, well have a poll would be best

Roger that, I've asked Francisco if he would advise. I'm sure he reads this forum, but in case not, I've forwarded all your condolences, guys.

Who Loved So Well (A sailor's eulogy)

We sailed the sea by oceans light,
Around the horn through restless night.
Our course and luck did make it right
To see things new in strange delight.

The seas were harsh and took their toll
With branded flesh and tortured soul,
And when at last the sun sat low,
It touched the earth with blood red glow.

Silver breakers plight our trough
To sails unfurled and winds aloft.
Spirits soar on breezes free
That bear the souls of sailors, we.

Hear our prayer, oh Lord our God;
We lived to serve and wield thy rod.
Though wretches we, and racked with flaws,
We are the ones who fought thy cause.

Now bleached white bones on foreign sands,
Attest the toll in far off lands
For those who heard their country's call;
Brave sailors each, who came to fall.

Remember those who served on ships,
And bid farewell on endless trips
Across the seas to Timbuktu,
And lived and died; these chosen few.

We ask this Lord, for those so true,
And honor bound beneath skies blue,
Who served and died for freedom's hand
To hold and cherish this, your land.

A sailor's death on ships of sleep
With few to know and none to weep
For faith so brave, a soul to keep;
A silent grave in oceans deep.

And when the end has come at last,
And unfilled shadows heaven casts,
Remember we who served and fell,
And to the hosts of heaven tell;
Bring home my boys who loved so well.

Godspeed and farewell Dave. You may have been in the Army, but you were a sailor at heart.

Archie

Soul of a Submariner by John Chaffey.

He cast his soul to the wind, and let his spirit free.

And his life was set on course, with a submarine decree.

Society had many rules, no way he would live by.

No commuting to an office, no wearing suit and tie.

No time to conform, no time for kids and wife.

The sea was to be his home, the service was his life.

If only he could tell, of the sights that he had seen.

Of the seas that he had sailed, on that fine old submarine.

But his tales will go untold, because of history past.

Of lessons paid in blood, the "Silent Service" it was cast.

Though the days drift into years, the memories do not fade.

Of good boats and tough missions, and the sacrifices made.

Of Silver Dolphins and great shipmates, and moonless dark sea nights.

Of travel to exotic lands, and many bewildering sites.

O’ to hear the claxon sound, his friends they do not know.

He prays to once again, go where Submariners go.

Each year he grows more restless, the salt flows through his veins.

But the depths are for the young, not the old with many pains.

His heart beats with a fever, his mind drifts to the sea.

He knows the taste of liberty, and what it costs to be free.

He will hear the vents no longer, he will go to sea no more.

For his final set of orders, has cast his soul ashore.

RIP Dave, on eternal patrol...

 This is so sad. I have worked alot with Dave with improving the textures for the enviroments and will miss our discussions about ROW and what to do next and so on...

He is one of the most dedicated men I have ever worked with! and helped the ROW-team by allways setting the bar for high solutions to everything he worked with.

Same here. My involvement with ROW was a simple PM request from Dave to help with testing new work he planned to release. Little I did i realize at the time that that would lead to so much more than either I or him could ever imagine. He always kept his standards high and always pushed me to do better. Such a sad, sad loss for this community... I didn't realize he was so young until he told me he was a veteran of the Gulf War. So sad, dying so young...

I'm not very good at words at times like this, so let me offer these to express my condolances to Dave, his family, and all his friends at the Radioroom.

NAVY HYMN

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

(Submariner verses of the Navy Hymn)

Bless those who serve beneath the deep,
Through lonely hours their vigil keep.
May peace their mission ever be,
Protect each one we ask of thee.
Bless those at home who wait and pray,
For their return by night and day.

Lord God, our power evermore,
Whose arm doth reach the ocean floor,
Dive with our men beneath the sea;
Traverse the depths protectively.
O hear us when we pray, and keep
Them safe from peril in the deep.

Update – 08 Jan, 2008
* Special note: Dave is gone now, having finally lost the battle with the many ailments that plagued him. Let it be known that, even as his body was failing him, he never once complained, nor did he ever feel sorry for himself. Instead, he plunged ahead with his project, “Reflections on the Water,” with reckless abandon, as if he knew his time on Earth could be cut short at a moment’s notice. His efforts transformed his beloved game, “Silent Hunter 4,” into something majestic and breathtaking, and in doing so, touched the lives of so many around him in such a positive manner. His quiet strength of character and positive outlook was an inspiration to us all. Whether or not he realized this does not matter, for true heroes never envision themselves as such.

Dave was a true hero.

And he never gave up.

How can I just let you walk away?
Just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath, with you, ooh.
You're the only one who really knew it all.

How can you just walk away from me?
When all I can do is watch you leave
'Cause we've shared the laughter and the pain
And even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all.

So many reasons why..

Think about it this way though, Kriller2. When the 'Add On' is released in a few months, current ROW files will probably not be compatible with it. Agreed. When 1.4 came out, Dave was not able to touch it for a for a few weeks. I threw caution to the wind because I could not play SH4 with his work...it was that good. It worked fine...at least the textures and a few others. I think the pitch and roll mod part needed work. The camera needed work because of the increase in detection area to 20000. I do not see these getting changed again.

Yes I think alot of the textures will work with the new addon, maybe with some adjustments, the hard part will be to analyze the new scene file and all other dat-files refering to Daves work and change them to work with the Addon since this was Daves work and I don't know how he did it.

I hope you Guys are right. In my case, I'll get the Add On when it's released in order to support the franchise, but I'll only install it once the modders have created a full Atlantic campaign.......and assuming that ROW does actually work with it.

If the Add On is to be a retail purchase, then they would not be permitted to take ROW and use it without negotiating with the modder or someone authorized by him. Although Dave would happily have given them ROW for nothing in order to help others, I think it unlikely that Ubisoft's legal department would authorize inclusion of software that was not created in house.

Well, patch 1.5 should be a dedication to Dave's work and memory. They can take ROW and add it so it will also work with the new add-on. Surely Ubi can do something special for the fans of the mod and game.
When I installed that patch, I thought the same thing. I think Ubi just took the idea and made it their own with their own programming.
AVG is quite correct. Dave had a very good relationship with the Devs regarding ROW. Ubisoft did not in any way just take ROW and use it. I believe you'll also find that Dave is credited in the Add On.

ReallyDedPoet

Yes this is my understanding , Dave had a great relationship with the Devs., he respected them, this went both ways. Also, it was the Devs., and not UBI that he dealt with right?

I think the Scene.dat file will work fine as well. Just my thoughs on it.
I've looked at the scene.dat as per his request and there seemed to be one error in the file (which was created with an earlier version of S3D, combined with minitweaker). Dave PM'ed and posted in my thread about it. I replied to him but that was his last post regarding S3D so this never got any follow-up. While I don't know the impact of the error, I will have a look at it again next week and see if I can fix it. I am not a very talented modder, I have never touched the game files other for S3D testing purposes. But I hope that after I fix the file, someone else can have a look at what the impact of the bug was.

Dave definately wouldn't want ROW development to die down, so it is up to ALL of us to take his work and make it work for subsequent patches or addons. We can't let it go...!

Indeed Skwasjer, there is in truth enough talent lying about the

it up the same way or had quite the same passion for it.

Before anyone accuses me of hijacking this thread for the purpose of promoting my mod, please stop and think for a minute that I've NEVER done that before, and in fact, went out of my way NOT to even mention it in any thread but it's own, except when someone else referred to it, in solving a problem that they had. I felt I had to do something to show my appreciation for him, so I dedicated the application to him. If it weren't for his encouragement, I probably would've given up on it a long time ago. I miss him as a fellow modder and an all-around good guy. I guess Dave was recruited for that big Dev Team in the sky...

That being said...

What Dave told me was the devs said the files helped them with months of work that they did not have to look into for patch 1.4. So yes, apparently some of Dave's ideas got into the patch.

Do you know which ones? Maybe I won't need all the ROW files if there's ROW effects already in the game.

The strangest thing happened this morning.
I am on a small training base on the Potomac River in VA. This morning we did a two mile run around the base and when we came up to the river there was an absolutely jawdropping sunrise. A few of the guys running, who have no idea what SHIV is, began to say "Wow, whoever programed that sunrise is great" "got the colors just right".

I was sucking wind at that point in the run but it brought a smile to my face.

I have an ATi card too (the X1650 Pro), and I've found a way to "trick" the card to show halo and glare, albeit for a few seconds. Pause the game in Navigation Map view, Alt-Tab to Windoze and then back to the game, unpause and go to exterior view. If you want to capture a particular screenshot, make sure to set up the camera before doing all this, and when you're back to exterior view take the screenshot immediately.

Woah, you'll have to forgive me I've been away from subsim for a few months and just heard the news. I almost cannot believe it, Dave was the closest person to me on Subsim.com. After he started the ROW mod we traded a ton of private messages with each other since he always liked having opinions from other people. I also helped him dig up pictures for his mod to make the ocean look more "blue" like it should be. Really feels like I lost something important to me, his mods were always of the highest quality IMO. Dave and all of his hard work will be remembered in my signature always while I remain here on subsim.com.

Dave was a man who believed in what this community is - people with common interests and a love of subs (in whatever fashion we can get our hands on them). More importantly, its a community of friends. Maybe not always seeing eye to eye, but people who share a love for - lack of a better term - the sea.

Dave touched many here - whether by the ROW/LBO mod, his other works, or just his nature and willingness to help others. He will not be forgotten.

Funny you should mention that RDP, I've been thinking about doing something similar. I can put pictures in the sub interiors and after some research, I can put them in the office as well (not just the captain's picture, but posters on the wall and all kinds of changes in the office-Thanks to Lane's post and others contributions at the ubi site).

What I had in mind goes something like this. I'd like to put a replica of the clock/plaque for Dave's memorial on the wall in the office along with a picture of him and probably spruce the place up a bit with a few war posters or some cheesecake (are you listening Fred?). I also thought about putting his picture up next to the "tonnage board" so that when we go to check our stats against the other skippers we'd see a picture of him and maybe put his actual in-game tonnage up in the list.

I'd like to combine all that with a new start up video (Doolittle's tribute) and some of the static shot tribute pics that have been done and roll it all up into a JSGME mod.

Besides the office, it would be easy to put Dave's picture up in the sub, just a matter of deciding where and possibly gathering all the possible starting points for textures (stock, Captain Cox's, and all the others that have modded the interiors) so that, no matter what interior textures were being used, one could have one with Dave's pic. This is necessary because the pix in the sub are on the same textures as other stuff. The office looks pretty easy since the pics there are seperate textures.

Sound like a plan?

Edit : I need to learn how to type faster:rotfl:

Yeah, kzs is working on some interior stuff, but I like your idea about combining all of this stuff as a single mod. It is a great idea and I would support it  Like the plaque idea in the office as well.

I know this post is late, but I've just come off the road and read the news about Dave's passing.

I would just like to extend my condolences to his family and friends, of which I know there are many in this forum. I only knew Dave through his work and contributions to the subsim community, and it's a terrible loss for all concerned.

Go with God Dave.

I took some time to make a little reminder something for you all, captains
I thought, like me, you'd like some kind of "captain" portrait-like old photo of dave he would have think to be funny, so you can keep his memory alive... Not to mention, paste it into SH4/3 Textures to have him on board :arrgh!: Comes in two versions (one tribute to his beloved SS194 seadragon sargo class):

That's great to hear Kriller. Its GOT to be hard to start moving forward again, and I'm sure the load feels quite heavy.

I'm sure that's what Dave would have wanted though too. He worked so hard to finish it for everyone, and you could tell by his posts that he was racing against the clock.

Watching fellow Subsimmers file through here to pay their respects is entirely sad for all of us standing on the outside looking in.

In the early days constructing the Grey Wolves project, my best friend Kurt died of a stroke, and it made my whole world stop for a time. I could only think of what I'd lost.

Its hard to remember when it comes to the death of a friend, that we shouldn't keep dwelling on their death, but instead celebrate their life, and our good fortune for having had the honor of knowing them.

Hang in there ROW crew. You've seen the pit of despair... and it leaves you with only one direction to travel.

Aw jeez, I've been away a while busy with other things and just dropped in to see what was up with ROW and SH4.

Just want to say that Dave was probably the finest human being I have ever known - he gave us all something to aspire to with his cheerful nature, his incredible determination to get the job done no matter what obstacles, his constant willingness to spend his remaining time improving SH4 for us and helping anyone that was having probs with it, and his refusal to ever complain or feel self-pity and yet still keep on busting his butt for the community when faced with health probs that would devastate the average man.

Dave, if I could be even 1/10th the man that you were, I'd be 10 times better than I am now. You were an incredible man, and the whole world, not just Subsim has suffered a loss with your passing. Rest in peace Dave, and I hope you're up there in Heaven doing awesome mods for God right now...

Kpt Lehmann is right, let's don't mourn his loss but rather celebrate his life and courage, and remember that we were blessed to have known him even if it was only for a short while. (Hard to believe but he was here less than a year...)

Hi Kpt Lehman,
Thank you for supporting me on continuing the development of ROW it's nice to hear.

Yes it feels quite heavy, having to live up to what Dave did and carry on his spirit in these forums, but I know I can't do that, because no-one can replace Dave, but at least I can try to focus on correcting the few bugs Dave had to leave or didn't have time to correct and try to finish what both of us started a year ago.

First I will try to make the colours look better and look more naturaly, as you probaly know, my passion is for colours and graphics from my early days of modding on SH3.
Then I will concentrate on the reflections and on making one scene.dat file that will work with ROW, RSWD and RFB.
so there is plenty of work to do and only one way to travel ;)

Here's the homage to our good friend David, aka LeoVampire, from all of us members of the GWX team. Some of us SH3 players had the chance/occasion to speak a bit to Dave, about random things, his work on SH4, life in general, etc... And we measure the chance we had.
This nice man was not only a skillful member of the ROW team, but also a sweet person who would have deserved to get a much better life. As life was more a task and pain than a pleasure for him, the only dream he still had was to finish his work on the ROW project, one of the most ambitious SH4 mods...
May your soul be always with each and everyone of us at Subsim, guiding us through our real life problems... And with every member of the ROW team, helping them to reach what you were undoubtly aiming for : nothing less than the highest level for this mod.

We take a bow in respect. No one of us will ever forget you, Sir.

Hi guys,

I'm currently running many ROW files with SH4 but at one point in my game, the ocean start shaking. This is really ruining the visual aspect of the game. I tried to pause the game after doing some time compression on the navigation map (like it's said in the first page of this thread) but it's not solving the problem, the waves keep shaking.

The shaking also seems to increase in frequency as the mission progress.

Here's the files i'm running (in this exact order), maybe someone have a clue about what to do?

ROW Textures with Sun Halo camera flair vs_5
ROW Sub Reflections and Roll Pitch Mod vs_5
ROW Sky and Ocean Controls vs_5
ROW Special Effects with stock zones vs_5b
ROW Object Reflections and Search Lights vs_5b
ROW Sound Effects vs_8
ROW New Clouds from Kriller2
Dave_Si_Interior
ROW Realistic Camera with sway vs_2d
ROW NEW SeaFoam from Jaketoox

I'm patched to the last SHIV version (1.4) and those are my comp specs :

Windows XP
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual
Core Processor 4400+
2.21 GHz, 2,00 Go RAM

Hi Apogee18, welcome to SUBSIM

Check out the first post in the thread, in it you will see a JSGME Screen shot, one with Trigger Maru, the other a generic install, don't worry as much about the fact that the pics use older versions, just focus on the install order. Because I am not sure if you are using mods, use the generic install version.

If you are using one of the larger mods, let us know and we can help you with that as well.

Don't worry about technical ignorance, we all go through a learning process here, actually it never really stops. Hope some of this helps, post back if you have any questions.

This was the goal of the mod in the begining when it was only a graphics / eyecandy mod, unfortunately ROW has to work with alot of other mods now, because it changes alot else than graphics so its allmost impossible, unless someone makes a big installer with alot of questions , but it would be alot of questions asked, like do you have TM? y/n do you have RFB or both and so on, what speed do you want the clouds? slow / medium / fast etc. etc...

It would be nice but long ago when Dave was sending me test files and had a lot of work ready to go, we decided to piece meal the features. We both believed the choice for each was a good thing. Such as the slower clouds, seafoam, etc. Some systems could not handle the high textured seafoam so he made a file for the slower systems out there that could handle a reduced seafoam texture. Things of that nature made him decide to have the mod in parts. Also, to what Kriller said that sort of developed after the mod was kicked off. Need to accomodate RFB and TM. It all started with LBO and discussing with Dave when to shut down the LBO thread and sticky the ROW thread (LBO is incorporated in ROW) the decision to make it individual downloads was made at that time. Dave proceeded to create the mod and thread. It had grown from there. But, in hindsight, it was a good thing as his final work is being completed now and just creating the link to the last piece of the puzzle to download makes life easier for all who enjoy the mod. Basically the link will be a scene.dat file with two corrections of bugs and other changes. Once done, download and activate with JSGME and your off.

It would be a disaster trying to install mods for SH3 and SH4 without JSGME. Not to mention it works just as well with other games. I'm currently using it with the beta patch for IL2 Forgotten Battles.

I need to know what zone's file from ROW you are using and with what mod?

If you are using NSM aka. Natural Sinking Mechanics you need one of these 2 download's.

Please use Natrural Sinking Mechanics Light VS in your game before you install and use this download and only apply it to your game while in port. This contains the smoke fix for ending too fast! Thanks Canonicus for the quick reference.
#6a ROW_Light_Zone's_Special_Effect's_vs_3 (http://files.filefront.com/ROW+Light+Zones+Special+E3rar/;8992802;/fileinfo.html) This is for Natural sinking mechanics and Triger maru 1.6.3 only.

Please use Natural Sinking Mechanics Classic VS before using this download and only apply it to your game while in Port. This contains the smoke fix for ending too fast. Thanks Canonicus for the quick reference.
#6b ROW_Classic_Zone's_Special_Effect's_vs_3 (http://files.filefront.com/ROW+Classic+Zones+Special3rar/;8992787;/fileinfo.html) This is for natural sinking mechanics only.

Dave Does anybody have a copy of ROW_Light_Zone's_Special_Effect's_vs_3 (http://files.filefront.com/ROW+Light+Zones+Special+E3rar/;8992802;/fileinfo.html) available. The link that is included goes to the filefront hompage.

You can pickup a copy off my site.

Hmmm

I am really just a lurker round here or at least I was. I always enjoyed reading the hundreds of posts from people and just seeing the many thigns that were out there. I discovered this site when I pruchased SH3 and just a month ago I purchased SH4 and downloaded the ROW mod so I would have something to play while I was away

Needless to say I am shocked and saddened by this news. It is really tough to see a member of a community so well knit to pass away. I guess now I have resolved myself to join the community actively and not be so much a lurker.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

It's always great to have newcomers to welcome :arrgh!:!
Especially people lurking around in the mod workshop that may one day contribute ;)
So welcome, all of you :D

Also, I see there's new people not quite used to mods. So using ROW, if you experience tremendous FPS drops while cam is underwater don't hesitate to PM me. As an aging X800pro owner, Using ROW as it is will turn my game into a mere slideshow when underwater. So i've come to a solution to optimize it back for old rig. I'll send you files if needed. Maybe release it as a small optionnal mod in the first post of this thread?

Have fun while using ROW, BTW

""The mod installer is ALMOST better than a six pack and pizza. You get that puppy loaded up and installing mods is so very easy. JSGME is certainly one of the best tools I have ever seen.
""

Sorry folks but still having a few problems here.

I've downloaded the JSGME and installed it in into my SHIV folder. I've tried to follow the instructions very carefully with regards to opening it with 'Run as Administrator' etc as my OS is Vista.

I'm keen to add, mostly texures/special effects and I've made sure that I've added these mods whilst in port. I've also included the new 'load screen' mod as I thought if I saw this up and running then I would know the mods had 'taken'.

Alas, the new load screen never appears and I've yet to see or hear any of the new special/sound effects. The water textures and reflections are great but to be honest I'm not sure if these are just the standard ones I'm looking at.

I have a copy of the new Mod folder its contents (All in their appropriate sub-folders) to the DATA folder as well as having it in the main root folder as I thought that might have been the problem. However, I'm not entirely sure I understand the line in the readme file concerning 'replicating the folder structure.'

Mys system is operating on Vista 64 bit with more than enough processing and graphical power to run the sim at very high settings.

Sorry to be a bit dim but any thoughts very much appreciated.
Thanks once again,
Gary

Sorry folks, but I'm still having a few problems here.

I've followed the instructions about the correct way to install the JSGME as best I can. Including the 'run as admistrator' and 'Compatiblilty' lines as I'm running Vista 64 bit.

I've made sure to activate all my mods whilst in port and I've also included the 'new load screen' mod as I thought if I saw this up and running when I loaded a game it would be a good indication the mods had 'taken'.

Alas I've yet to see the new load screen and there doesn't appear to be any of the new sound/special/effects/textures of the five or six other mods I'm keen to apply either.

I've placed an additional copy of the MOD folder which was created in the main SHIV folder (with the mod files in their appropriate sub-folders) in the DATA folder as I'm not quite sure I understand the line in the read me file concerning 'replicating the folder structure.' But this didn't help either.

I have more than enough graphical and processing power to run the sim comfortably at full settings. Sorry to be so dim but any further thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks once again for your help.

I haven't been around here long & I didn't ever get a chance to get to know Dave but I did sample his work & it was great. He looks rather young in the pictures; was his demise unexpected or a prolonged illness? I have seen many people leave this earth through the pages of a game forum & it leaves you with a sense of helplessness to not know what happened or if you could have helped in some way.

Did you get any errors moving/activating the files in the SHIV Directory? If so, since you are using vista, the best thing to do is to make sure you have SHIV installed to any directory except Program Files. There is an extra layer of security on that directory that makes moding and manipulating files hell.

donw
01-20-08, 01:04 PM
I have a copy of the new Mod folder its contents (All in their appropriate sub-folders) to the DATA folder as well as having it in the main root folder as I thought that might have been the problem.

I don't have Vista Mate, nor do I have SHIV, so I can't help you on that issue, but what you posted here, is not going to work. You do not put the MOD folder within the data folder.
Here is an explaination of how SH3 is setup...and is done the same way for SHIV

When you originally unzipped the JSGME Zip file, you should have directed it all to go into the "SilentHunterIII" folder shown below. (Stock install)

http://www.geocities.com/donw_43/folders1.jpg

Then, go into the "SilentHunterIII" folder, and run the file called "JSGME.exe

That process will add the "MODS" folder, which is where you'll need to copy any mods that you wish to run. The following picture shows what you will see within there.

http://www.geocities.com/donw_43/folders2.jpg

This should help explain the proper folder/file order that is required. Take notice that inside the MODS folder, is each mods title, and directly under each one, (I have several others there but just used 2 here to illistrate)...you'll see "data" which may or may not have several subfolders under that.

Hope this helps?

Thanks for all the replies. I understand about keeping the file structure, but the mods I've downloaded only appear as a single file...a 7Z file or an RAR file for eg. I make sure that they go into their own sub-folder within the MOD folder, but do they then also have to go inside a new folder marked 'Data' as you have in your illustration? The mods I've downloaded don't have any additional files and I've succeeded in 'activating' them within the JSGME menu they just don't seem to work.:-?

donw
01-20-08, 02:16 PM
.7z and .rar files are compressed files Mate...just like a .zip file, (just another method of compression) You probably need to go get 7ZIP off the web...install it, then you can (UN)compress those file types...(into your MODS folder)

donw
01-20-08, 02:23 PM
[ but do they then also have to go inside a new folder marked 'Data' as you have in your illustration?

I say again...do NOT put them in your 'data' folder...and do NOT make another 'data' folder.

Once you have properly uncompressed the mod you wish, you should then see that each one has its own 'data' folder within..and as you put the title of the mod into your 'MODS" folder...the very next one under it will always be 'data'

 Well said donw, and I suggest also to extract the compressed files (.ZIP .RAR .7Z) to a temporary folder and check carefully if they are JSGME COMPATIBLE before proceedimg. Not always they are, and this might cause troubles. And when you place them i the MODS folder delete or rename their read me file or almost every mod will over-write the game's read me txt. (oohhh well, it's useless...)

Dave had been having problems for some time. He had suffered 11 heart attacks and a couple of strokes and knew his days were numbered. This was one of the reasons he spent so much time on this mod...he wanted it to be complete for us before he died. He was a modding genious and an exceptionally warm and generous person. He was only 43 when we lost him.

Success at last!!

DonW honed in on my problem. My download tool usually offers an extraction option for compressed files but not for the files the mods came in so I stupidly assumed the job was done  . As Don suggested, I downloaded the 7-Zip file and this did the business. The JSGME then worked its magic and my sub is now running with all mod cons!

I've not checked out everything that's available yet but already I'm loving the sea textures and the improved camera movement around the sub, it really adds a fantastic new dimension to the sim.

Many, many thanks to all who kindly and patiently helped me out with this. I salute you and your fine community.

I'll be reporting back with my thoughts on Dave's (and all the other modders) excellent work later.

All the best,

If you are experiencing slow down in the game at 6xAA when you are in storm with seafoam, try turn off HIgh Quality Anisitrophic Filtering. (skwasjer?)

For better colours if you think the colours is to dark, try turn up the gama slightly in your graphics options to just above 50, mine is at GammaCorrection=53 and it makes the colours look more lifelike.

Reducing anisotrophic may help for those that don't have the latest and greatest rig, but I suspect that isn't the cause of my problem. I haven't had any problem prior to the past two days. My problem is most likely the faulty drive imposing lag on my RAID controller (as it is trying to rebuild the array everytime). When I get it replaced I will tell you asap if I can run it lag free (which quite frankly should). Tomorrow I will sent it in for RMA.

And I too have gamma a bit up. Looks alot better.

If you install ROW over RFB, you lose some of the operational changes to the subs (surface dive times), but the game still plays. Other parts of RFB stay intact.

If you install the RC1 version of RFB over ROW, you'll have the original pitch and roll values from the November ROW files, but you'll lose the additional pitch, roll, and draft changes added by Dave in December after RFB was released. Those will be rolled into the sub.sim files for the next RFB releae.

There are very minor differences in the cfg files (snorkel depth, storm conditions), so you don't lose a lot by installing RFB first, but the numbers aren't quite as realistic. However, when the next RFB release is out, you will definitely want to install RFB after ROW.

#7 Sky and water controls is incorporated into the new ROW addon, so just enable it as the last thing in JSGME and it should work with every other mod on the list as it's only a graphics mod / addon which replaces some textures and the scene.dat and some env-files which controls how the colour of the sea and reflections should be at different conditions.

Install order:
- ROW (#1 to #9) then RFB for ROW or TM and then RSRD (after TM)
- Then the #10 ROW addon. (important!)

The above install order makes sure you have the latest files from the mods RFB or RSDC or TM and the install of the ROW addon as the last mod makes sure you get the full eyecandy.

Swdw is correct here on installation. I just remembered I put ROW last because the original RFB file made the sun smaller and of course my ATI card at the time was not producing halo. What I did was purchase a Nvidia 7800 for halo, etc. It was at this point I loaded ROW last because I wanted to see how the halo looked with ROW because RFB would have overwritten the ROW sun rendering. With that said, the game plays fine set up this way. But as Swdw stated, you loose of the realistic goodies. So, tonight I change everything around and load as it needs to be.

Archie,

As you can see in the above posts its quite difficult to arrange the mods while they are still in flux. I cannot post my JSGME list of enabled mods since I am at work. So from recollection I load in this order:

TM1.7.5 + RSRDC + then any ROW file that does not over-write TM. Thats my choice...when you over write the sim may run....but who knows what the internals are doing....sound or skin mods tend to be neutral in this regard and you can add them at your leisure..

with RFB I run Release Candidate 1 for ROW, again I add the RSRDC + ROW files that do not over write RFB.

At some point you have to make a hard decision and just go with something that fits your taste of play and go on patrol. Its easy to get into the MOD thing, I mean how can you say NO to Kapt Zur See (pardon my bad spelling) 4-bladed props. I just had to add that!

Enjoy, its a great time to be into SH4!

Yes, thanks Wilcke, it all SEEMS to be working, but after reading Krillers post I don't know if I am missing something as far as the graphical goodies goes. :arrgh!: Thats a good idea though, maybe somebody from the ROW Recovery Team could post a screenie of their JSGME set up to update the very old one on the first ROW page?

Just to be absolutely certain, I assume that the above instructions on Order supercedes the order in this post made yesterday by SWDW: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=756056&postcount=222

A related question: I am using NSM Light. Am I correct that I should continue to use the "ROW Light Zones Special Effects vs_3" and not ROW Special Effects with Stock Zones vs_5"? What in eye candy am I losing by staying with NSM and not enabling the Special effects version 5? (I only use RSRD, not TM or RFB)

Thanks in advance for your patience in responding...and all your hard work on this final Add-On Mod..

Oh my..

I sail in for the first time in a very, very, very long time and this is what I stumble upon. Read through the whole thread and he sure seemed like a nice person and did a spectacular work with SH4. How very sad indeed

This bit of Laurence Binyon came to my mind while reading the posts..

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Just got a chance to read my email and I saw this about Dave in the SubSim newsletter. Sorry to hear of his passing. He did a greatjob on his reflections mod. We'll all miss him. Condolences to his family and friends.

You did good Dave, smile down upon us once in awhile as we're thinking of you often. ~S!~

Oh, I have been away from NSM for quite a while. Here is my theory, since NSM was finalized for 1.3 Werner moved on. ROW progressed and along came patch 1.4....Werner takes NSM into the shop for an update. You may lose some eye candy but really I ran ROW and NSM in 1.3 and it looked gorgeous!

So, I think you are OK! Enjoy!

Ok im a little confused here, the new addon you simply instal after my other ROW mods, or should i take out a certain ROW mod because this new addon makes up for it, im going to instal the new T.M. final tonight and take out my ROW slower clouds and ROW sub reflections because Ducimus has already incorporated these into the final release. I would like to know about the addon though and what i should do or were to place it, thanks all.

Hmmm.... I'm having one of those "Need to verify if i'm the only one seeing this" moments.
I have noticed that after the latest update weather changes much more rapidly. And as a result, I was able to notice the cause of the Sea "Reseting wave state" as has been discussed before.
What I notice is the wind direction and/or wind speed changing by 1 degree or mps every ten seconds or so. The result is that every time this changes the waves pop or "reset" to some default position.

Before the update I only really saw this around wind speed 14 mps. Now I get it more often than not and am seeing a very fast changing weather system. As in during a 24 hour period I can go from calm, stormy, and back again.

So back to my question, does any one else see this or did I break my install again?

A couple of months ago, in this thread I believe, there was a discussion of odd smoke behavior...smoke immediately (and unnaturally) curling over to the sea as shown below. I think Dave worked out a solution or explanation... Now I can't find the exchange of Posts on the matter. I'd never had the problem before, myself...until today.

I've been enabling and disenabling various mods the last few days to try to get the order/sequence correct with teh Add-On Mod. Something may have happened.

Could an expert review my JSGME and suggest what is wrong....or maybe just provide a solution learned at some point in the past. Thanks...

I'm sure there are others here that could probably point out more, but just an observation i made...

- when you run the ROW Add On i dont think you need ROW sky and ocean controls, as far as i understand the add-on essentially replaces all of that. at least thats how i run it.

- you dont need the DialsGato Fix its included in the TRM files

- My JSGME looks something like
+ ROWs
+ ROW add on
(lastly) + TRM files

I've read here that it's good technique to disable from the bottom up and enable from the top down, always in order to get to the mods you plan on working with.

Also double check make sure you running the most up to date ROW downloads.

Hi Doolittle As I have said in our PMs I'm not into to much modding but I have noticed you have RSRD P2 in front of Row Addon and I think They should be after all Row Mods ie: ROW TM RFB RSRD correct me if I'm wrong. Here's my mod list as I know you have almost the same Graphics Card as I

I recall a post about the AddOn that it should come After RSRDC. To disenable and then re-enable RSRDC in a different sequence will take some major juggling...before I do that, I tried some other steps hooping to isolate the funnel smoke problem. I did get rid of the Smoke curling down immediately to the Sea, but I'm still encountering other strange Funnel Smoke Effects. I've tried various Mod-enabling sequences and combinations, all with the Add-on for ROW as the last ROW mod enabled. As recommended, I have also Dis-enabled the ROW Sky and Ocean Controls.

With ROW Special Effects with Stock Zones v_5, I see this for funnel smoke:
http://members.cox.net/doolittle80/UsingROWSpecial%20Effects%20with%20stock%20zones%2 0vs_5.jpg

However, with ROW Light Zone Special Effects vs. 3 and with NSM Light 3.3 installed, I see the more effective (correct?) funnel smoke as shown below. It is not very dark/thick smoke, but I can see it well enough at the necessary distance on the horizon:
http://members.cox.net/doolittle80/UsingNSMLight33ROWLightSpecialFX33NOskyandOceanCon trols.jpg

If I enable neither of the Special Effects Mods, no NSM Mod, and only enable the “Add On for ROW”, I see the same inferior (essentially invisible) funnel smoke:
http://members.cox.net/doolittle80/UsingNeitherSpecialFX%20%20OnlyAddOnRow.jpg

Anyone have any idea what might be going on? Also, could someone post a ScreenCapture showing me what the Funnel smoke is supposed to look like? (I have a top-end Rig and 8800GTX card, so my problem would seem to be MOD-related).

My current JSGME set up which gives me the funnel smoke as shown in the second picture above:

1_TMaru_Trigger_Maru_1.7.6
2_TMaru_Sound
3_TMaru_GFX-ROW_Version_5
RSRDC TM version
Final Addon for Reflections On The Water
ROW Sound Effects vs_8
ROW NEW SeaFoam from Jaketoox
ROW NEW Clouds from Kriller2
ROW Main Load Screen

Trigger incorporates much of ROW, so I just added five files from it + RSRDC between the two as required.

You do not need to re-install SH4. One of the beautiful things about the JSGME is that when you first install it into SH4 you can take a "snapshot" of the file structure and then when unloading MODS in mass you can do a "compare" to get an idea if anything got "hosed". Excellent!

I am seeing folks running way to many older ROW things in conjunction with the latest release of Trigger! Could be problematic. See Archie's post above for a correct load sequence. Thanks!

Just get rid of the Old Sky and Ocean control as the newer Final Addon for Reflections On The Water, will take care of that business.

Also, if you want to run the FULL litany of ROW files you can just elect not to install the Graphics part of Trigger Maru, will work just as well. Same with the Sound, you can just omit the Trigger Maru sound pack and add ROWs latest SOUND MOD V8, or your favorite!

Enjoy!

Hi all,

This mod is my own version on how the pacific should look like.

Features:
Blue enviroment and sea.
Improved water scenery with new light shafts which you only notice underwater, so remember to turn them on in options!
New clouds rendering. Now the clouds will be more subtle and more like in the pacific.
New colours for both underwater and above water.
New improved night visibility. Now you will be able to spot ships when there is a full moon and it's cloudy, allso you should have an improved visibility in nights with no clouds and moon.

It's a mod I was working on to see what can be done with the new ROW addon and push the SH4-engine a little further.

Download here (filefront)
http://hosted.filefront.com/kriller2/

Download here (rapidshare mirror)
http://rapidshare.com/files/90398637/Pacific_enviroment_for_ROW.rar.html

Included in this mod is Digital Truckers darker smoke mod and JakeTooxs water edge mod.

Installation:
Enable his mod on top of ROW or Trigger Maru using JSGME and read the incuded readme file.

This mod replaces the same files as the ROW addon + some extra files.

These mods are included in this addon, so you don't have to install those before installing this mod.

ROW sky and water controls
ROW New sea foam by Jaketoox
ROW clouds.
JakeTooxs Water Edgde mod

You must be in port before installing this mod.
