This thread was started by Dave Bunnell aka Leovampire. Dave's creation of ROW for SH4 was the most exciting modification to SH4 since it's release. This is self evident by the amount of posting traffic. Dave's dedication, excellent work and memory will live on in this thread. When you install the mod and watch the sun rise and set, remember Dave's passion for SH4, creating the very best for all players of SH4. Dave was never one to say 'Final Release'. That is Dave's greatest gift to this community and SH4. The drive Dave had with ROW/SH4 and all his physical issues simply edifies one man's desire to strive for the very best for fellow players of the game, SH4. To put it simply, the mod was so good that most players would not play the game until Dave' fixed or enhanced his work when needed. That speaks volumes for Dave's creativity and passion for the game and the Subsim community. Dave was a genuine as genuine gets. Always stopping to help others with any problems concerning the game, even if it did not pertain to his mod! Dave's untimely demise 01/2008 warrants a continuation of this thread and his work. Dave was certainly a friend to all within this community.
Any new users having any problems installing this original work of Dave's, PM a moderator and we will get you set up for one of the best modification SH4 has ever seen. Enjoy Dave's work as much as he enjoyed bring it to you and the community.
Kriller2 has carried on for Dave and his work.

Anvart / Subman1 / Hitman / Redwine / FooFighter / LukeFF / Torps and many more for some of the sound effect's and idea's that have come around over time here that we just added onto to make this mod! Take a Bow guy's! / Ubisoft / The Romanian DEV Team for bringing us this new Silent Hunter Series.
Okay as most of you know the main reason for this mod was to make the game's over all environment as realistic as possable and as pleaseing as possable so that us Skipper's would slow down a bit and enjoy the game more on the Bridge rather than speed their way through it. What started off as somthing small and simple turned into a super mega mod that hit's all object's in the game hence the over all size of it. This mod will over write almost every environment mod out there from Seeadler's to Kriller2's old work and build's upon them further to make more realistic effect's for the game's over all environment.
What it does and what has changed:
#1 The angle that all light comes from now matches their possition both above and under water IE Sunlight, Moon Light, Spot lights and so on. Before the light under water was at a fixed angle now it falows the angle of the light sorce. And because angle of light now matches where it comes from there are now proper Shadow effect's seen on the water and sub's and ship's.
#2 The camera has been re worked to show all celestrial objets the same size in fallow cam's free cam's and bridge cam plus you can now walk the decks of ships and sub's with it. And when inside of the sub your perspective view now moves with the sub to simulate your actualy being there.
#3 All reflections in the game has been enhanced for every object in the game and now appear as real to life as possable and distort as the sea becomes ruff.
#4 now the water is reflected onto ships and sub's in real form no more random reflection effect's both above and under water. And the deeper you go the more they fade until gone which never happend before in the game.
#5 Sky coloring and water coloring has been made more to a Pacifc color you should and would see in real life and the game now uses all sky color effect's for sun set's to sun rises.
#6 New Oil slik effect's and fire effect's and explosion effect's with reflection enhancements and lighting enhancments.
#7 Also new Seafoam effect's for the game that react to the wind to make it seem more relistic.
#8 That is just the tip of the iceburg and the rest you can find out for yourself!
Demmo video's of the mod from Stabiz (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=226089) Thanks for this awsome work!

Important Information on what ROW replaces or Builds on top of:
Living Breathing Ocean / Environment Mod / Visual Upgrade Mod / It will Replace the Zone's and Cargo files from both the light and Classic VS of Natural Sinking Mechanic's / Propeller Fix for sub's. mod / 9km Visabiltiy mod / Smaller Rain Drops Mod / 30 meter Underwater Mod / Smoke on the Water Mod / Scope Animation Mod / and several camera mod's.
All of the things it replaces are incorporated into this mod so you will not lose those effect's you wanted for your own games in the first place. I hope this answers a lot of questions that will come up over time!
I run my game at 1280x1024 @ 60hz and have 4x AA and 4x AF set up for my video card. This is where I run and test this mod at in game. I will make the same sugestion as the Box does for this game. If you do not have an NVidia graffics card you will not see all of the effect's we have created in this mod.

#5. ROW Textures: This is the Heart of the ROW Mod. Can be added to game any time without problems. You have a choice one with the sun halo having a camera flair and one without the camera flair. Can only use one texture pack at a time.
New fire, oil slik, Sky, Ocean, lightning, Color's, Land, Sun halo, moon halo and a lot more.

#6. ROW Zone's and Special effect's: If the textures are the Heart of the mod then this is the fun part of the ROW Mod. YOU Should be in port to add this to your game.
#6a ROW_Special_effects_with_Stock_zones_vs_5b (http://files.filefront.com/ROW+Special+Effects+with+brar/;9299621;/fileinfo.html) Nothing other than ROW textures is needed with this due to fire, smoke and oil slik texture dependancy.
This has been made 1.4 compatable due to changes in the zone's file with patch 1.4 changes. New Smoke effects also included. You can not use the NSM ship's with this! NSM changes the internal compartments of the ships and change the zone's file! 1.4 Compatable Posted on 12/21/07 This includes all slow smoke adjustments from much earlier mod's created. Contains the fix for the funnel smoke problem.
#7. ROW Sky and Water Controls: This contains all my Living Breathing ocean work and all of the work on the water reflections and sky controls and how the sun works in game. Due to popular demand star's sun and moon have been resized. I have incorporated as much work from other modders as possable in the scene file. Not all of the weather change's I made to the scene file work right until you get to port and start a new patrol also if you have your Time Compression higher than 256 then weather wind and wave state's take longer to change. I made changes for the weather to change in game more often but do not take effect until you are in port.
#7a ROW_SKY_and_Water_Controls_vs_5 (http://files.filefront.com/ROW+SKY+and+Ocean+Control5rar/;9287240;/fileinfo.html) This include's My work with reflections and sun halo and Living Breathing Ocean and the rain mod and the visability mod and the under water visability mod also reworked fog effects to work with new game engine and distance visability. Background:
This work is dedicated to Dave for being a good friend and a known member of the subsim community for his never-ending striving to archive perfection on everything he did and his way of allway being willing to help people out if they had a problem with this mod and allways had a joke to go with the help.
My work on this mod was to make Dave's work look as good as possible, by making new textures for water and sky and by fine-polishing his work and examining how his work could be improved and released to the public.
Installation::
Copy the folder with the "readme" file in your MODS folder besides your main SH4 directory and enable it as the last mod in JSGME.
Hope you enjoy this mod as much as I enjoyed working with it.
Kriller2

JUST an FYI In one known problem and how to get around it:
As most of you know Since I made the Living Breathing Ocean mod there are times comming out of time Compression that when you go to an outside view you get some strainge effect's from the ocean like it run's backward's or shakes. If you want to advoid this effect you must do a pause game while on the NAV MAP time compression then set it back to 1x and you can go to an outside view with no ocean effect's problems. It give's the games rendering engine time to catch up with what is happening. It is a pain to always remember this but it will become second nature if you want to advoid this problem.ALSO a big time P.S. here do not use the CTRL+N feature this will screw up game textures and effect's this is not a normal in game control to use this has been proven to be a problem!
This Mod is dedicated to all the Brave Men and Women Over Sea's away from their home's and family's. With hope you will all come back safe and of Sound Mind and Body soon!
Please help suport our Subsim Comunity and help keep this a home for all of us who love this sim and the mod's:
To date 11/06/07
I have donated $50.00 to sub sim.
$20.00 to JScones for his work JSGME.

I just had an orgasm.
Then, I logged onto subsim and saw this, so my night just keeps getting better!
Thanks guys!
By the way, I was curious about this UHA thing... haven't seen that in use for a long time, and have long believed RAR was the greatest compression technology and WinRAR the greatest tool since anything. So I did some tests:
Original Data: 442 MB
UHA: 180 MB
RAR (best): 199 MB
ZIP (best): 259 MB
So I guess UHA is pretty good! :)
One last comment... I notice the folder/JSGME order doesn't match the readme due to the alphabet, so I just preface my folders with 1- and 2- and so on, and it sorts them in JSGME accordingly. Then I can select a whole block of them and hit the [>] button without clicking them individually.

I believe you can just add it to your RAR and it will work. Do not quote on that. At any rate, I find the program to open this is very easy and very similar to RAR and ZIP. Trust me, if I can figure it out anyone can. Computer Guru I ain't:shifty:

First off a big thank you for fantastic work guys, but I have a question for you chaps. I seem to have lost the 'fog' effect for ships on the horizon { take a lan game and the Mariana Trench scenario } and you'll see that the ships on the horizon are very sharp, no atmospheric perspective...any way to fix this with the mini tweaker? { I managed before but can't for the life of me remember where I changed the file lol }
Here are two screenshots of what I mean
LBO, and Seaddler's Environmental Mod
http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb48/602RAF_Puff/Sh4.jpg
and ROW at the same area...you can see how sharp the ships look in the horizon

Sorted, looked at a non modded scene dat and compared what was changed, would it be possible to tell me what I have changed and what effect it will have on ROW please ?
I changed
Fog 1 no fog
objectsrelativeZmin from 0.8 to 0
objectsrelativezmax from 0.9 to 0.85
Horizon
Zmax from 1500 to 1000
Other environment
Overhorizon from 20 to 15
Air,Air Fog,etc
LOD from 3 to 1
It now suits me but was just wondering if I have disabled any of the fantastic features you guys put in by doing this?
Got up at 4:30 this morning to play SH4 before going to work and get a bonus, Awsome job to all who contributed to this fantastic mod  looks absolutley gorgeous sunsets, water reflections, stars at night look much better, Easy install with UHA  Thanks for all of your hardwork guys :arrgh!:

I think I've still got UnUHA from back in the day, but I don't see any reason to use this high compression tool when the difference between it and the most used on-line format is only a mere 5-10% - unelss bandwidth was under high strain.
PS: UHA won't work with WinRAR (and I doubt they've added support for it in 3.7). I used to work with it a while back: it's great for packing stuff, especially graphics and sounds but can take a hell of a long time to unpack.

So far I do not know of any mods that clash. I have been testing with other mods over he past two weeks. What I did was install the mods I must have and then installed this mod right in behind them. I do not believe you need to be in port. Mostly textures that do not affect the mechanics of the game. Leo did advise that for the actual high end reflections to work you need to delete the saved game in my documents/sh4/data/savegames. Of course you loss your career but you can finish your current career with most of all of the mod working for you. Personally, I dumped my career and started fresh to get the full effect:up:
Thanks a lot!! Very nice work

Great work.....had a couple of problems...
System P4 3.2, 256kvid card, 2 gigs Ram.....no problems with FPS or stuttering.
Installed over TM 1.62
Installed per the instructions in the ROW(A) read-me file.
Everything was fine except both cam mods (Arcade or Realistic - per instructions I only installed one not both). When going to free cam the game hung.
XP error report says faulting module was SH4.exe.
Uninstalled the cam mod and went back to stock cam and game ran fine.
Thanks to everyone to worked on/tested this.
please check that you have no old files left someplace hidden deep inside the sh4 folder structure - that kind of this caused most crashes i'm aware of during testing.

Ok....I'll give it a fresh install and see what happens....
No other mods installed except TM 1.62.
Note: I did have problems with a previous cam mod (sergbuto's) and had to tweak the settings per the instructions from that thread to get it to work (jerkiness - pan problems on bridge).
Thanks again everyone. I'm very satisfied (this cam glitch is just that a glitch.....welcome to the wonder world of Windows:-? )

Sorted, looked at a non modded scene dat and compared what was changed, would it be possible to tell me what I have changed and what effect it will have on ROW please ?
I changed
Fog 1 no fog
objectsrelativeZmin from 0.8 to 0
objectsrelativezmax from 0.9 to 0.85
Horizon
Zmax from 1500 to 1000
Other environment
Overhorizon from 20 to 15
Air,Air Fog,etc
LOD from 3 to 1
It now suits me but was just wondering if I have disabled any of the fantastic features you guys put in by doing this?
I am also interested in an answer to this question

i'm pretty sure you could have avoided this - next time just check if you have any old copies/backups in your folder. my guess is you've made a backup of the camera.dat and left it somewhere inside sh4's folder structure. The game seems so load anything it finds and gets twitchy if there's something twice even if it's named differently and maybe even in a different folder.
The game looks for the node names within the dats as long as they are in the right folder I think.
Look at the way it finds a gun, for example.
You can make a new dat, for example, guns_and_radars_100000.dat (.sim/.zon too). Make a gun called uber_gun. If you add uber_gun in eqp, it WILL show.
So that might be the cause of issues.

OK, want to know if this is justr and engine limitation.
I look at the ships, and I see smoke. I moved the scope 360, and when I come back, I see disconnected smoke higher up, and new smoke coming out the stacks. Does the engine stop rendering new smoke when outside my FOV, but keeps track of what is there, then when I come back it's "torn?"

part of the optimization and it can be turned off. The responsible parameter is "NoActionMatureOutOfFrustum" or very similar. look through the particles.dat via s3d and you'll find it inside the properties node of particle generators.
this is the second time someone asked for it and i guess i'll try turning it off by default for the beta. i erred (SP??) on the side of caution whenever possible concerning fps.

I have heard the screaming in the test mods. I believe it should be in there. This is the alpha version and not complete. to get a new upgrade in power for the house so had to wait to get on line guys!
Yes the sound effect is there for the screaming guys one the ships and life boats for explosions and collisions.
I added the other sound effect's because AVGWarhawk said it is part of the environment and he didn't have most of the sounds in the begining so I took his advice and added them to the mod last night.
As to the fog issue the setting's that were in the scene file for the fog was part of the fog settings for one of the visability increase mod's and were settings that had been there since LBO was released so it is nothing new.
As to why I changed the Horizon max is because I got a better blending of the land in views when it came to sun sets and rises and also with the moon which created a nice fog effect instead of flickering land masses.
I hope that answers some of the questions posed here!
But I did forget the zone file and will post a quick download for that ASAP so please hang on

Brilliant mod guys been playing with this all day. First thing I did today was download this! Excellent work on the environment colours and reflections they seem much more fluid and vivid, really natural. Love the burning oil slicks too something that was strangly absent until now.
The only thing that I can see might need a touch more work is the smoke from fires. I used to use Slow Smoke mod and that would build up really tall big black columns of smoke that hung in the air for quite a while so I would say more and higher smoke and also I think it would look better darker it looks a little flat grey at the moment. But these are two minor issues and just my opinion, seeing as its an Alpha release at the moment I think a little feed back is always useful.
Cheers guys this Mod is a 'must have' classic!!..... And now..... I shall go crazy with smilies:       :rock:   :o

I will work on the smoke end some today to see about getting it darker but I matched up all the smoke effect's in the game to the vs3 settings of slow smoke for wind coef so the problem isn't there. Because of the extra graffics I eased off on the amount of smoke because once multiple ships are burning with the extra reflections on the water it starts to cause a major slow down on lower end PC specs so I had to make a comprimise there.
PS when I tryed to compress the files using winrar and winzip I couldn't get them as small as I needed to tell the truth so I went with the new program Kriller2 sugested as it was just easier for me in the long run seeing I was such a dead line to get this out and I was tired as hell heance the missed zone's file to be included.
I just asked Wernersab if I can use his zone's file to all the new effect's we created in it for everyone to use so as soon as I get a reply from him I will get a file out to everyone for it to download!

Perhaps something to do as an add on option (if its possible)..... bigger smoke for higher end machines and stock ROW smoke for slower systems?
Just a side note, but Ive been running all of the components of this mod to see what impact it would have and I have to say at the moment there has been very little slow down on my system, minimal in fact, compared to what I was running before. So hats off to you there Leo!

Any ideas for those of us who are challenged on the computer? I love the game and I'd add evey mod I could but it's really difficult for me. Winuha, jsgme...you might as well be speaking Russian. I seem to remember an older sub sim that I bought a cd for that had all the downloads and it was an easy process to add to the game. What bothers me the most is I know I'm really missing some great stuff that's been created for this game. The only mod I've added is the smaller radar blips. Easy to add. Any cd's on the horizon? Reflections on the water sounds really nice. Thanks to those who put in all the hard work.
Perhaps something to do as an add on option (if its possible)..... bigger smoke for higher end machines and stock ROW smoke for slower systems?
in theory that's a good idea, practically however the whole thing gets more complicated with every option we add. just making one minor change is twice as much work but the particles are fine-tuned in color and opacity in accordance to the amount of particles emitted so making a change here is more work than simply upping the particle count (at least if it should look good). Plus there is twice the probability we forget something ;) . the download also grows with every option we add (although the particles don't add up to much).
There are many things to consider when giving options...
Having said that - we already have further ideas for the particle effects and will give them yet another overhaul i imagine so there might be hope yet :sunny:

As to a CD release I just don't know never did anything like that before but who knows once this is totaly set and released as a full vs. I am sure I can find someone to make a patch type program to get it installed on games.

Also in the Graffic's settings for the game put them all back to stock then hit apply and leave the screen. Then come back to it and reset them to where you want them and hit apply again and see if it changes. Sometimes the settings get carried over from one game to another in the files and have to be reset.

deactivate the mod part that has the scene file in it. Then find it with the mini tweeker and change the values in Sky #1 #2 to a 6 instead of a 7 then remove the copy of the scene file and reactivate the folder in JSGME. ONLY for Sky #1 and #2.
Okay?! I will set up a seperate download for a new scene file with the changes.

You're right about the ones with the *, they are included in the mod.
The floaters are also reduced in the mod
If you want the soundpack no problem, enable it after you enable ROW.
(you will lose the hollywood effect, if you want to keep it. Copy the soundfiles in your soundpack).
Silent service mod.. I do not use it.
But I think it gives conflict because there is a menu screen in the ROW mod.
Just enable it with JGSME after you did ROW.

Just the Load screen is changed other wise it is not touched at all!
The reduced floaters are there stock is nut's we just didn;t make them black kept
the green color and then reduced the amount of them by 75% at least.
I only added the other sounds out of respect to one of the testers that asked me to place them in the mod because he loved them and thought it was part of the environment.
Some are sounds that were introduced in mod's from many moons ago and I didn;t know if people could still find them. A lot of those sounds were enhanced by me.
And some from the Die Slowly mod that just blew me away and thanks to Redwine for them.

I have gone back to before the Patrol I am on now and then to all other saves inbetween with no problems what so ever. None of the files that are in this mod should cause that kind of problem because they do not touch the Campaign layers at all nor does it change any date's of when ships or subs come's into play. So there is no reason for a save not working with this mod. I have checked and double checked that end of it to no end over and over again and time and time again.
JSGME does not self refresh so if you deactivate a mod first and do not close the program before making changes to the files then starting it back up to activate them there can be problems.

I had JSGME lock up on me while it was installing the last mod, the hollywood sounds. As a result I think I have a botched install. I had ultimate sound mod which I told it to overwrite. After the lockup I removed Ultimate Sound Mod and I think I'm missing some sounds now. I did some tests and sounds like crashing into land or Back Emergency seem to be gone.
The JSGME crash seemed to have something to do with batch selecting all the ROW mods and installing them in one shot. I'm surprised it could crash on something as simple as moving files around.
The office no longer pans around. Not a big deal, but the radio is less visible for noobs .

well, as a test i started a new career and there were no probs with pretty much the same mods. one i disabled was the environment mod, just in case there was a conflict. looks like i'm going to have to delete all my current saves to run RoW, which ain't exactly a bad thing, but i was sooo close to winning the war:(
Any ideas for those of us who are challenged on the computer? I love the game and I'd add evey mod I could but it's really difficult for me. Winuha, jsgme...you might as well be speaking Russian. I seem to remember an older sub sim that I bought a cd for that had all the downloads and it was an easy process to add to the game. What bothers me the most is I know I'm really missing some great stuff that's been created for this game. The only mod I've added is the smaller radar blips. Easy to add. Any cd's on the horizon? Reflections on the water sounds really nice. Thanks to those who put in all the hard work.
Hi Peter,
I'm a Bilge Rat too, although I learned about Jones soft when enjoying SH3. The one thing I have learned here is never be afraid to ask a specific question, the more experienced captains will never turn you down. If you open the Forums and then visit the SH4 Mod forum, you will find plenty of explanations in the 'Sticky' Threads there.
However here is the link to a pack, that will give you lots of Mods, including the Jones Soft add-on, that makes applying and removing Mods, so simple, just a few clicks. You will find also that most Mods, come with really good help files, but as I said; Dont be afraid to ask, as people here are really great.
Heres the link:- http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=109854 The link is for Filefront near the bhottom of the thread.
I hope this helps you.

So far these "seem" to be the only mods, (for me anyway) that didn't want to live with ROW.
but then again I'm guessing the ones with the stars are in part built into it anyway.
I'm going to miss "SS 1.2c" though I've always felt this is one of those "Thats the way "they" should have done it in the first place" kinda mods.
Kosh Reduced Floaters Apr 28
SILENT SERVICE 1.2c GRAPHICS MOD
Living Breathing Ocean(LBO) with 9KM visability mod and 30m underwater visabili(*)
Smoke On The Water -beta5-(*)
Krillers terrain and harbor upgrade1(*)
Ultimate Sound Pack
Looking forward to the final product , when all the dust settles...
If anybody disagree, please speak up..
Wouldn't that cause mods to overwrite each other...? Then when you'd go to disable one you'd have to disable the other .... I've got that before in JGSME. I'll just keep it the way it is ....Maybe on down the line Capt. Cox will do a even better one.. I just thought it really gave the startup a new (better) face
BTW ....Really like your sub skinning , ya ever think about doing some for "IL-2" ?

The reduced floaters are there stock is nut's we just didn;t make them black kept
the green color and then reduced the amount of them by 75% at least.
I only added the other sounds out of respect to one of the testers that asked me to place them in the mod because he loved them and thought it was part of the environment.
Some are sounds that were introduced in mod's from many moons ago and I didn;t know if people could still find them. A lot of those sounds were enhanced by me.
And some from the Die Slowly mod that just blew me away and thanks to Redwine for them.

What value controls the sun/moon size, exactly? I want to try and get it so it's the proper size (about half a degree, or about half of a finger width (or less, but I have small fingers) at arm's length.
The radius is the distance of the celestial sphere, right, not the apparent size, correct?
tater
leovampire
09-21-07, 08:52 PM
the sun and moon size is set up there.
You can not change the apparent distance to camera view unless you mod the camera file.
With a simple adjustment to the camera you can change the way they look in size Angular Angle. Fallow cam / Bridge Cam / and free cam need to be set to same values to keep the same size look from normal eye view
So to get it 1/2 a degree, I need to mess with the camera? (moon was up before sunset, and I was measuring both from my patio tonight)
Maybe 40-45% of my pinky width at arm's length.
I moved a camera (love the new camera view!) to see a sailor's fingers on the binos next to the sunrise, and the sun was bigger than his whole hand by a bit with the camara ~ arm's length (had with the jumps it makes, took many tries).

And they rotate exactly as they do in real life. The camera is the problem with getting a perfect ballance in a ll views. All objects in the game cause a problem with halo effect's and lighting effect's for some reason or another. You can only see the halo through the sub not the sun or moon and the same with the Deck crew. Just like they get transparent as the fog layer starts to grow more intence in storm conditions.
The Dev's hard coded the way the sun and moon roates around the Earth and seemed to match it up to the orbital possitions reported by Scientists in the 1930's through the 50's. There is some kind of Depth perception bug or setting in the game that works with the Transperancies where the problems come into play.
And when you adjust the size of the sun in the sky angle possitions it also adjusts the moon size to match so if the moon and sun is set to the same size in the object size drop down then they will always match each other in size in the rest of the settings.
That's cool. in those Sun1, Sun2, etc, there is a scaling, do smaller numbers make it smaller? If all those were changed, would that do the trick?
Sorry, total scene/camera noob here.
I actually guestimate the time in RL by the sun, and quite accurately, usually within 10-20 minutes. Near sunset it gets far more accurate, since I know what a sun diameter is. So I'm really used to paying attention to the sun and moon.

Oh Yeah! forgot to mention got nailed by a Betty, nice oil slick lol :D This mod is full of suprises, I'm sure thar more to come  :arrgh!:
leovampire
09-21-07, 09:30 PM
I first adjusted the sun and moon to match in size.
Then I made it so they are shown full size when they are at horizon level until 15 deg up from it. Then as they do their orbital path I set them up to slowly reduce in size and then start to come back to full normal size as they are comming back down again to make that illusional effect of size change we experience in real life watching sun set to sun rise and moon set to rise.
But the camera is an issue to a point for example if you have the fallow cam running and then angle it to the right or left the moon and sun become oblong instead of round but at a head on view they are perfectly round.
But if you change the angular angle of the settings in the camera file it will make the sun and moon appear a differn't size even though they are not changing size adjusting that. Kind of like zooming in on them effect
I want them the same size all the time (horizon or zenith) and grossly smaller, is there an easy fix for me to mess with? What about the radius? That's the distance of the fake objects from the observer, right? The stars are at 1000 or somethign like that, and the sun/moon were like 970/975, can i make them 2000 or so, and see how they look, or does that actually control their movemnt on the sky (in which case changing them throws off the sunrise/sunset)?
tater
leovampire
09-21-07, 09:41 PM
than they are at the horizon level? But if you want them to always be the same size in the orbital path then you have to adjust all 13 Sky settings for the sun's relative size to 1.
1 means they match the size you set in the sky object Radius.
See when I set up the mod I tryed to simulate everything we visualy percieve with our eyes from actual to illusional with the naked eye and no measuring instriments being used on them. If you want actual then you need the scene file from the Real navigation mod and then apply all of my other settings for the reflections and the ocean and the lightning and so on and so forht to it to get the rest of the mod effect's that don't touch those things in there. MAV87 set up his scene file so it could be used for real navigation using measuring tools like a sexton I didn't.

WONDERFUL! :o:o:o:o
Ah, cool. Then I can mod the radius values to make them smaller, test, etc. If I can remember the tick spacing on the periscope I'm gold. Adjust sun til it is 1/2 degree or so (anything close, I'm not going to navigate with it :) ).
If 1 is the same, then .1 is a lot smaller? 10%? Cause I can guess right away then and try scaling.
tater
leovampire
09-21-07, 09:51 PM
and will change the size appearence from inside of those views to the other camera views so not an easy task to always have them the same size. Again to achieve what you want I sugest you use the MAV87 mod as he set up the camera and scene file to already do this for you.
The scene file can be delicate at times and can be destroyed and have to start all over again I know I have done this many times. Mini tweeker is set up in a way where a value being changed too much can actualy change another part of the Hex editing for a differnt setting entirly where it can not be easily repaired.
Ah, I see. A value of .2 is actually still too big, but a lot closer. 0.1-something is probably perfectly accurate. As I said, it needn't be spot on for me, but a 3-4 degree sun looks like I'm watching the world through a telephoto lens to me.
So 0.2 looked OK, but I don't want to mess with anything except the sun/moon size in ROW, it's just too great. :D
Seriously stunning.
Won't the mav87th mod not be compatible?
tater
leovampire
09-21-07, 10:05 PM
But you can add the settings from my scene file to it just don't mess with the size of anything in any way in both the camera settings and the scene settings.
Mav's mod doesn;t change the sun/moon size at all. It was wrong in the stock game (way way too big). Least the Camera Mod 1.2 I have:
Lines changed in Scene.dat are:
Air, Air Fog, Camera, LOD
LodFactor - set to 2 from 1
Fog 1 (no fog)
ObjectsRelativeZmin 0.8 from 0
Added
Horizon
Zmax=3000 (stock value is 1000 even when the line is not there)
I need to change the 13 sky values cause I want the sun to always be the same angular size (it is in RL), and I want it to be very much smaller than it is in stock.
Sorry to hijack your thread with all this, I'd PM but my damn box is at like 98 posts, and I need to copy all the useful stuff out at this point before I can delete anything, lol.
If I get it all figured out, I can make it as an option for folks.

OK, glare on, looks awesome. The daytime size of the sun is a lot less apparent when it's not a perfect circle all the time, too.
I tried the 0.2 scale sun, and the halo effect is actually bigger, it screws something up and looks wrong---big bright area, no intense center except where it's behind the hull...
So I noticed that I can see the sun through the hull. Is that a function og the "arcade" view setting (""s because I actually think it is more, not less realistic)? Cause the TBT and binos need to be able to see since in RL there was one fore, and 1 aft, and the game just has 1.

Mine looks identical.
Near sunset, the large elipse of glare drops, and a smaller, more sun-like version appears. I noticed a similar effect when I reduced the scaling across the board, I saw a bigger bloom with a smaller sun. Is that hard coded?

I can run most games on high, but lately the newer ones such as Sh4 is slowing me down.
EDIT: so as far as i can tell, we need to also have you LBO installed seperatly?
does it look anygood without it or is the best experience with it?
OK, I can make the sun smaller. Oddly, when it's near zenith it looks great, and near (not at) the horizon it looks great. somewhere up in the sky a little, maybe 30+ degrees, I get that huge lozenge shaped bloom. ON the horizon (this is with me messing with scene.dat, NOT stock ROW, BTW) I get no resolved disk at all.
What I did was set the scaling in all 13 sky settings to 0.2. The sunhalostartfade, etc I set to stock to test.
Looks really cool though, I've been taking the boat to the Na'pali coast of Kauai to test, looks stunning!

I suppose we have to make changes to the zones.cfg to keep NSM3.3 functionality?
I dont want to overwrite anything from NSM and pooch it. Can I just add the lines needed from Hollywood zones to the NSM zones? Also with the released fixes can we just add the files into the appropriate folders and re-add them in jsgme?
Other than this no problems so far, excellent work. I wish Falcon 4 was this easy to patch back in the day.

...well, what i know about the foam, you start to see it @ about 10m/s (or a bit less) winds, and amount of the foam increases when there is more wind.....that's what i have noticed when testing it....@ 15m/s winds you have it all....

The moon doesn't seem to scale with the sun. I tried the moon in my 0.2 scaling, and it's still at least 5 times too big.
Also, with my messed around with version I can't see the sun through the binos---might be related to the glare and nvidea though.

Yes so you will not mess up NSM 3.3 you have to manualy add the Hollywood effect to his zone's file.
I asked Wernersab if I can use his zone's file and add all the new effect's created for this mod to it just need to get a reply one way or the other. In the mean time I am working on my own for the mod.
LBO and everything that was in LBO is also in this so there is no worries there at all. And after all the work I did on the scene file the ocean seems to run a lot smoother with much less problems if any at all so enjoy guys.

My only complaint, seems everyone else can enjoy the sea foam but not me :damn:
Seems I'm cursed with "fair weather", have been ever since I installed the original LBO mod. Before installing ROTW I deleted my SH4 save-game folder totally, let SH4 make a new one then reset all my graphic/sound/gameplay options.
I've started a new campaign and left port 3 or 4 times, every time without exception the weather is totally clear, 5 m/s winds. Within a few hours of leaving Pearl, winds drop to 0 m/s and stay that way no matter what  I can sail for 5, 10, 15 days and wind is always pegged on 0 m/s?!!???
It was that way also after I put LBO on, did a full patrol and never saw any wind at all!
Does anyone know how to hack the save files to brew up a storm? Or how to get my weather engine working again? Used to be I'd get a good variety of weather on every patrol, from dead calm to raging thunderstorms. But now I don't get "weather" at all! :damn::damn::damn:
Maybe an uninstall/reinstall of SH4 is in order?

I tryed to work with how often and how fast the game changes weather conditions and slightly adjusted them to make it happen faster but the game still does what it wants from time to time. Just no absolute way to control the over all weather effect changes.
And other things for that matter the game works funny at times.
I have done saves on a full moon night and when reloaded it is no longer full but if I go back before the actual moon rise then it is full again.
Just a bug that there is little control over at times.
BTW I added the 7z's zip to the main download instead of the WinUHA with the missing files I added at the bottom so any new downloads will not need those bottom files.

Thanks Leo, maybe I'm just cursed to sail in the doldrums from now on :rotfl:
That is strange what you say about the moon phase, I was thinking the sim had the astronomical data done correctly such as you'd see in a planetarium program. I used to be into astronomy 30 or 40 years ago and the sky looked pretty damn correct to me based on the few brief glimpses I saw of it. (Too busy with other things to spend any time stargazing!)
Maybe I'll fire up Red Shift or Starry Nights tonight, and set the date to Dec 9 1941, location to Pearl, and just see how well the moon phase and star position in SH4 matches reality.

astro rotation BUT the save game files do not always copy every bit of information correctly to be reaplyed to the game once the save is loaded Dirty Harry.
So as I said if you go back to a save before the moon rise it then works properly because it hadn't happend yet.
Hence the problem with the lightning not working until you get rid of the save files.

that your seeing as a floresent green color. I did notice it once before but didn't think nothing of it. It is possable the color was changed accidently when enhancing the reflection's for the object. Or the ilumination file for it isn't working properly. Either way I will investigate it.

Thanks and high praise for the crew that put this together, well done; now SH4 is a visual delight.
I wonder if you can do much along similar lines with SH3, or is the graphics engine of SH3 too primitive, just a thought.
I noticed a couple of issues that I thought to raise, would like some commend from the Mod team.
At night the ship reflections seem to glow under the ship, everything above the water line is correct and lifelike but the actual reflection of the ship itself glows brightly.
Also I noticed at least with my first sub in a new career early 42 based in Java. The reflections for the sub and conning tower is fine and perfectly life-like, but the actual periscope housing or tower, the structure that projects above the lookouts and the main conning tower, their reflection seems to be just grey, the shape and outline are reflected on the water but a different colour than the reflection from the rest of the sub, kind of a blank grey, as if there you have the template but not the filling if you get what I mean.
I have also discovered that this mod doesn’t seem to work very well when you are near to ships ported from SH3. The closer you get the foam and all the wonderful detail just drops away and there are many screen white outs or flashes, I've taken now taken out the SH3 related mods, I think its called ship power pack and the mod now runs fine. Incidentally the ported ships from SH3 just seem to highlight just how graphically primitive SH3 is to SH4, no crit of the modder who produced the mod, just, well thank god for progress!!
Thanks to all, I wonder if others have noticed any funny stuff re reflections, otherwise, in my opinion this is probably one of the finest mods, up there with Trigger Maru, Captain Cox's mods, GWX and NYGM.

Rascal

not all the light and reflection maps are there that SHIV uses for what it came with.
Someone would have to make all of those files for the ported ships.
Plus I don't think we actualy changed any of the reflection stuff on them just what was in Triger Maru and the main game files.
As to the conning towers for the subs I will look into that as well.

..ok now, my rig is as follows: P4 2533@2740, MSI Geforce 7600GT with 512M memory (silent), and 1.3 Gb RAM
As i said in earlier post, you start to see the foam a bit under 10m/s winds and the amount of the foam will increase with the wind, @15m/s you have it all..(according my observations when testing it)...those pics are taken @ 15m/s wind.

I just installed ROW and it's great. However, during the installation process I noticed that there was a conflict with Seeadler's sky mod which slows down the super fast clouds . . . so I uninstalled Seeadler's mod. How can I slow down the clouds again without changing this great ROW mod? Thanks in advance!:D

From what I gather from Leo, the game seems to save files such as fast clouds. Might want to delete the save game file in my documents/sh4/save docs. Before you do that, keep playing as some clouds do remain fast as the weather changes.

I am downloading our mod now :rotfl: I have been away from the computer this weekend so LeoVampire took the big task to test the mod before launch and release it (thanks alot Leo  I owe you one!)
We have put alot of work into this mod and spend many sleeples nights trying to match the colour of the sky and sea in SH4 with the real thing from pictures on the internet so it's great to come home and see this feedback and we will look into solving some of the problems reported in this thread.
BTW sorry for the WinUHA format, but it is the best archiver there is so I used it to save bandwith for those using Dialup-modems.
@Letterboy1 Seeadlers clouds is included in ROW so you should have the nice clouds and speed of them.

Congratulations on this, Leovampire & Co, it is stunning indeed.

Hmm, I deleted the entire "My Documents\SH4" folder and everything in it before installing ROTW. Started whole new campaign. But sometimes (not always, but sometimes...) when I come out of high TC, the clouds are racing across the sky at warp speed. Looks like something from "The Omen" when 'ole Beelzebub is getting ready to trash everything in sight!
But after 3-5 seconds the clouds slow back down and all is well. I'm guessing it is something to do with the cloud animations taking longer to come out of TC?

the things we need to look at for the beta release of the mod!
All repairs that have been posted in this site up to the release that involve the environment has been applied to the mod to make sure the mod and game run's as smoothly as possable.
And I personaly made sure the ocean effect's worked as best as possable and ran as smooth as possable with all the changes I made to the scene file.
And changes made in the camera files also helped in smothing out many strainge effects people were experiencing from time to time in the past.
Seeing some people are experiencing some things and others are not that means either duplicate files are being used in your game and it is getting confused on how to apply them so try to make sure no duplicates are present in your own game.
For instance the camera mod can cause the game to crash due to duplicate files in the main game folder and then you get other effect's with the clouds because of this as well.
I just went through every single file this mod touches, with 4 differn't guys in PM's, in their own game's installed that were having problems with cloud effect's and ocean effect's and game crashes and a lot more. In every single case duplicate files in the main game directory folders in these areas they were having problems with. How they got there we have no idea why they were still there we don't know but once they were all removed from their games everything ran perfect and they even got a FPS increase in their games.
If you are using, and I hope you are using, JSGME this is the procediur in adding and modifiying mod's:
#1 Make sure JSGME is OFF!!
#2 Add your mod to the Mod folder for JSGME in the main game Directory.
#3 Start JSGME then activate the mod from the left side to the right side.
#4 turn off JSGME then load the game up!
#4 never change mod's in and out using JSGME without turning the game totaly off!
#5 To change files in a mod you must first deactivate the mod then shut off JSGME because it does not self refresh changes unless restarted after you make changes!
#6 Turn on JSGME then reactivate the mod again after all changes you wanted to do were made then shut it off again and start the game.
I hope this helps people in figuring out what is happening in thier own personal games.

Leo you go too totally overboard with this, ya know? What you and your team have done for us is beyond belief, you guys should take a lesson from M$ or UBI and give as little as possible while still doing (just barely) enough to keep your market share! (just kidding! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:)
I'll look for dup files, I DID have a prob caused by a "Copy of Cameras.dat" when I installed Sergbuto's "Walk the decks" camera mod. I "fixed" it with a number of hacks, posted what I did in his thread then ended up looking like a total *sshole when I found the prob was caused by the "copy" and none of my hacks were necessary to fix it
Don't think I have any duplicate files at this point but I'll double-check.
BTW, the camera mods are FAN-FREAKIN'-TASTIC!!!! I love being able to walk the deck of other ships, love being able to roam interior of my sub from the command room cam, love everything about it!!! Can't remember which of you guys worked on that aspect, but I SALUTE you!!!! Awesome work :rock::rock:

So take a bow there buddy!!!
There will be an update for the camera mod's on Monday as well with some little repairs and changes for everyone.
And thanks Dirty Harry3033 for the compliments to us all.
I do a mod like I did car repairs in civ life and ops in the Army. Nothing half you know what. And always do my best
and pay attention to the needs of the others and always try to fix anything noticed that just didn't seem right and
always look out for my buddy before myself. No customers no business and you guys are the customers even if not
paying for the work.

Thanks you to Wernersab for giving me permission to build the new effect's created for this mod into his Zone's file from Natural Sinking Mechanics.
I will work on it over the weekend and give it to the testers and Mod guys here and make sure it run's properly and send it to Werner for approval and then it will be in your hands ASAP.
So be looking for that early this comming up week!
A couple questions regarding the ship dats:
1. Will you be providing a guide for how to make ships compliant (new ships, for example ;) )
2. How do the ROW ship reflections look without ROW installed? Would it be fine to make a new ship with just ROW reflections, or does there need to be two?

if you use the same DAT file that is in this mod for another Ship being created then the reflections will match up with the rest of the ships done in the mod. That is the only thing adjusted in the DAT files just reflection enhancment and angle adjustments.

I thought the same thing. Sailed about a week and half before a storm set in. Play it and it will come. Leo was looking for ways to get the weather to change a bit more frequently. I think that is on the back burner for the moment. Not to worry, the foam will come like it does with beer on tap:up:

the info for the water reflection but here it is anyways
Reflect_???_??? for what ever ship name it is open that node up with S3d then open up water reflection node and set it to what is listed below
Clip hight=0
Reflection=1
Refraction=1
Frustum test=0
MinVisDim=0.01
MaxVisDim=0.1
Then you are good to go hope that gives you the information you wanted.
We tryed it higher than this but got undesirable effect's in long distance viewing because the ships are not as high res as the sub's

Hi Leo, had a chance to really play with the mod on today. I tried the new scene file that corrects some of the sky colours and it worked a treat, before I was getting the slightly 'whited out' look and now its gone.
Noted a couple of things that cropped up and grabbed a couple of screen shots to illustrate if I could, so here goes:
http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/7637/dissappearingtdclm8.jpg
I've been getting a flckering, blinking effect on some of the instruments in the control room namely the TDC. If you can see the bottom lefthand corner of the black pannel was missing there for an instant. I think this may be an issue with the new camera angles?
http://img455.imageshack.us/img455/8722/ghostreflectionku0.jpg
Some of the reflections from ships at night are very bright and ghost-like. Somebody else noted this and I'm getting it too.
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/5121/dissappearingsmoke2ux3.jpghttp://img232.imageshack.us/img232/3083/dissappearingsmoke1vj7.jpg
These two pictures were taken of the same smoke but as I moved the bridge view to the left extra smoke appears as the fires reach the edge of the screen.
Also I'm getting some distortion and flickering at the edges of the screen while im panning the view especially if I do it quickly.
Ok just thought I'd let you know what glitches I'm getting to give you some more feed back. They are all pretty minor things and I don't know how far they are issues just with my system (which I do run pretty much at its limits). Anyway apart from those it runs really well the colours are spot on!
I'll let you know if I manage to cure any of these bugs myself I read earlier about duplicated files so Ill have a look into that.

for all angles around you even though the camera is not focused on it then there is a hell of a chance for a slow down when multiple ships are on fire and smoking. So changing that could cause a major slow down but for inside camera views I don;t see any problem what so ever in changing the value.
BTW thanks for the compliment tater in credit's LOL

it's pretty easy to "fix" this, however removing this can affect performance and i wouldn't recommend it. Look for "NoActionMatureOutOfFrustum" inside the particles.dat and switch it from true to false and the particles should stay even when you're not looking at the emitter.

Question - since installing this mod, I'm getting an odd white reflection on the 'corner of my eye' with the camera. IE., as the camera pans around the sub, there is a white reflection on the water in the corner that follows it. It disappears rapidly, and it's only really noticeable for a moment if you pan rapidly...but panning rapidly 360 degrees you can get a nice, steady view of it flickering away over there.
For example, see here:
http://screenshot.xfire.com/screenshot/large/aa51eece7109e919f050f06cb250afcff7f84e1f.jpg (http://www.xfire.com/screenshots/xanderf/ss_file-aa51eece7109e919f050f06cb250afcff7f84e1f.jpg)
...that white patch in the upper right - in front of the bow of the sub - shouldn't be there, and it stays about that same portion of the water into the 3d window as you pan around the sub, regardless of which direction one is facing.
Also, the reflections by the horizon seem...unusual. For example, leaving Manilla in late '41, there is a small sliver of land surrounding the horizon. For some reason, the 'reflections' mod REALLY exaggerates this in the reflection, though...but randomly. It's almost a moving 'sawtooth' reflection in the water. As below:
http://screenshot.xfire.com/screenshot/large/4937732ab63f4fedb35d16805cd601169b836746.jpg (http://www.xfire.com/screenshots/xanderf/ss_file-4937732ab63f4fedb35d16805cd601169b836746.jpg)
(You'll need to click on that and view the 'actual size' image to see the effect in the horizon reflection)
Settings are:
Radeon video card (obviously, note the green border)
4xFSAA
16xAniso (set to 'High Quality' mode)
Mipmaps set to 'Highest' quality
Adaptive AA on, set to 'performance'
LukeFF, I have managed to get AA and flare to work in mine, I had a profile set for SH4 but this was being overwritten by global settings, I set both at no Gamma and the glare is back at X4 AA.
I did that, and it looks like that did the trick. Need to test it more, but I think it works. Thanks!
