I have a series of screenshots using ROW, they are at 2560x1600 (4 megapixels). I lack any artistic ability but I am just in the process of uploading them in 7zip packages to Filefront if anyone wants to check them out and use them that would be fine. There will be 50 screenshots total.

Very good Gunfighter!

I think we're settled on the pic :)

1) Where do we send it? Francisco's parents? Need an address.
2) How will we do it ? I can upload to zazzle and have it printed and sent directly to address.
3) Torps do you want to have a go at blowing it up slightly larger? Any expers in res and printing with advice?

I mentioned to Neal of the possibility that any gift for Dave be delivered if agreed upon by a Subsim member. I offered since I am only about an hour from Dave's town. I also learned that another member is also about the same distance away. Neal was pretty receptive to the idea, since it would be a more meaningful, personal touch then just recieving something in the mail. If it's ok with all the rest of you, mabey we could go this route and have the two of us present Dave with our gift. How dose everyone feel about this?

Great work GF

Just one little nit to pick - if we do decide to go with this one, can you please fix the text at the bottom? "Captain's" should just be "Captains", without the apostrophe - it's plural, not possessive. As much of a perfectionist as Dave has been in his work on ROW, I suspect he may be as anal-retentive about grammar/punctuation as I am and I'd hate for us to give him something that might nag at him, even on a subconscious level.

elanaiba
01-07-08, 08:53 PM
Perhaps a grammar mistake is good, will give Dave a reason to raise from the bed and come to the forum to point it out :D

Sailor Steve
01-07-08, 09:38 PM
Are you kidding? His grammar is worse than anybody's!:rotfl:

Seriously wishing that would rile him enough to make him get up and come looking for me.

Just a quick edit to explain: Some time ago I PMed him to complain about his misuse of apostrophes (you guys know how bad I am about that). When he PMed me back he actually apologized to me, the explained about his two previous strokes. Boy, did I feel guilty.

I don't feel guilty about it anymore, just sad. I do hope it turns out okay, Dave.

I really appreciate all the work done thus far on the Poster, but I have to say again that I worry about someone with a stroke being able to 'handle' written material...While I generally liked the original versions of the poster, I had previously suggested that it be kept very simple for that reason.

This latest version, to be quite honest, could be a strain...those bottom three lines of text including the mirrored (reflected/reversed) lettering of "Reflections...." is 'difficult'. Likewise, the "Get well..." text being placed overlaying the two-color background also adds a bit of 'comprehension' difficulty...admittedly requiring a mere split microsecond perhaps for a healthy person to 'interpret' and adjust to, perhaps unnoticeable in fact, but likely not so for a person with a stroke.

I hope this constructive criticism will be accepted in a positive light, whether or not implemented.

----------------
Meanwhile, of course, I continue to look forward to news of Dave's recovery.

Francisco, thank you for sharing such a personal part of you. It means a lot to me that you posted the pictures so we could know Dave, the person, and not just LeoVampire, ace Modder. Submariners Prayer

Lord God, our power evermore,
Whose arms doth reach the ocean floor,
Dive with our men beneath the sea;
Traverse the depths protectively.
O' hear us when we pray, and keep
Them safe from peril in the deep.
There are no roses on a Sailor's grave,
No lilies on an ocean wave.
The only tribute are the seagulls' sweeps,
And the teardrops that a sweetheart weeps

I really do not know what to say, today received a email from underwriting approving me for my first house and 2 minutes later I get a letter from Francisco that Dave has died. This really sucks, he was the one alot of people waited to see post online and then swarmed in on the ROW forum to see what suprises were in store. He was a good friend and it was fun chatting on yahoo with him about politics etc; what we should do with ROW next?, what sounds best? what looks best?

I received the details from Francisco and I can say he died without pain. I worked alot with Dave on ROW Sounds as some of you did with ROW in general. I am planning on downloading all his work in remembrance and save it on 1 of my back up drives and in hopes one day someone could pick up were Dave left off. Knowing Dave he would want us to. Until that time comes we should remember Dave and what he has done for us all. The sunsets will never be the same in SH4 again.

From Francisco..........

Thanks you for all the letters and get well wishes. David would have loved this if he see or hear them. I was always jellous of time spent with all of you but now I understand why he do this. You all very nice to him and care. He needed you as much as I needed him.

Tell every one thanks you for me and him.

So young, so talented, so nice...

Dave, thanks for everything. Your troubleshooting skills and support made a difference in my work on S3D. Your mods are all of top quality. You are kind and helpfull to any (wo)man around here. And I salute you for just being such a great guy. I am shocked by this news...

My condolences to your family and friends... Rest in peace, leo...

Rest In Peace my friend, words fail me right now. I think the best tribute to Dave would be for someone to continue his work, maybe rename ROW 'Reflections of Leo' so he will never be forgotten on our digital seas. This is so unexpected and sad, it just shows the strength of this community that the passing of a man I never met on the other side of the world has had such a strong effect on me. Our thoughts and prayers are with Fransisco, life will be very difficult for a while but hang in there buddy, theres a lot of people thinking about you.

For now I just renamed it to Salute to Dave, after the Reflections part of the title. If someone has a better suggestion let me know and I will change it. It is the one best thing we do to keep the thread and all look after it for new comers to the game. They will need assistance in getting answers to their questions, etc. Dave's memory will sail on with every SH4.exe double clicked. He did love this game with a passion.

Dave has gone the way of all mortal men. When my time comes, if I could touch half the lives he did and make their lives just a little bit better, I'll consider my life well-spent. Dave was a genius whose abilities were completely overshadowed by the excellence of his character. However much we admire his accomplishments, we miss the man more.

Dave has reached the place we're all destined to be. While we're still here on this vast blue expanse, we'll continue where he left off. Now it's Dave's turn to rest with the entire sea his to roam. Some day all of us will join him, while others take our place. It is the cycle of such things, but that does not mean we don't take the time to remember who our comrades were, and the lives they have led as well as the lives they have touched. I grieve with his passing, but instead of reminding myself of his life's end, I think of what he has done in life, and being fortunate enough that he shared it with all of us here in this community of ours. We've lost one of us, but it's because of people like him, that we'll gain new comrades. And that was his final gift to us all.

I for one will drink to his life rather then his unfortunate passing.

Clear horizons and calm seas to you.

To Dave, Forever on patrol.

Psalm 23
The Lord is my sheperd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for your are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Dave our prayers are with you, and I know you are with the Lord. You will be so sadly missed by everyone at SubSim.

Before I am ready to get some testers together for the special effects changes I would like to know some opinions of the new funnel smoke effects you are all using right now.

Does the wind have too much influance over it for a start?

Is the trail of smoke okay or is it too long from the funnels?

Do you like the new density to it or should I say darkness of it?

Would like some input about it seeing you all have it right now.

Thanks ahead of time and again Merry Christmas everyone!

Dave

P.S. from the looks of it aside from a couple of minor adjustments the testing of the new ocean and sky work is a good to go thing so there should be a new download for it in a day or so.

Be ready for some ruffer sea's in the higher wind state's and some better reflection effect's.
I was reading through this thread and I got a lump in my throat when I discovered that Dave's last post was on Christmas Day. His final words were to wish us all a Merry Christmas.

Also I wonder what this "new download" had in store for us. I cant help but think it is like Schuberts Unfinished 8th symphony which is considered one of his true masterpieces.

I spoke with Kpt Lehmann today as he has communicated with Dave on a friendly basis in recent days. Being an EMT, he was able to better explain to me how serious Dave's condition was.

I'm thinking, if Francisco declines to accept a monetary donation, I will have a plaque made up and will send to him.

I'll send a note to Dave's e-mail, I understand that is the one Francisco is using, and ask how we help in some way.

I simply can't believe it. Nothing in life prepares you for this, and while it's true I didn't really know him, (we talked a few times in the forums) but being part of this community and admiring his work makes me feel otherwise. I pray for his family and friends and wish them ease with their overwelming sadness, and may god keep you all close to his heart.

So I don't ramble on. I was floored when I went to SubSim on my new laptop and saw picture and caption. I loged in and went to GT and didn't see anything so went back to main page and clicked picture. It took me to post #128 and as I kept reading post after post until a flood of buried memories and emotions from R\L came rushing to the surface . I thought I had these buried deep. I started this reply at 11:00pm pst and it's taken me this long to get this far and I said I wouldn't ramble on.

It makes the fabulous work Dave did with ROW all the more special now...

You only have to look at the number of times the ROW files have been downloaded to know that what he did for this community was used and appreciated by hundreds, if not thousands, around the world - that's an achievement and legacy to be proud of.

He is one of the most dedicated men I have ever worked with! and helped the ROW-team by allways setting the bar for high solutions to everything he worked with.

His death has come as a very sad thing and at the moment I don't know if the ROW-team will continue now that he is gone. Ok, I have heard back from Francisco and he said a "plaque to hang with his other things would be nice and welcome." I will post more on this tonight when I get home, how to contribute, etc. My thoughts are to I'll set up a donation page where everyone who contributes will be listed and have a nice plaque made. Any donations in excess of the cost of the plaque will be donated to charity in Dave's name.

What kind of charity? How about some thoughts on that? Red Cross, or maybe some heart foundation, or USS Cavalla foundation, or ... ? I can also ask Francisco if he has a preferance. I think an appropriate 501c org of some type.

Truely tragic, I was deeply saddened to see that Dave had suffered a stroke, but this is simply beyond words. My condolences go to his family in this hard time. Although I barely knew Dave beyond the thread for ROW, its obvious he was a good person, who went out of his way improve this game/sim for everyone while making many friends along the way. May you rest in peace Dave...the Subsim community will miss you.

The Lord is my pilot, I shall not go adrift; He lighteth my passage across dark channels;
He steereth me through the deep waters,
He keepeth my log.
He guideth me by the evening star for my safety's sake.
Yea, though I sail mid the thunders and tempests of life,
I shall fear no peril, for Thou art with me,
Thy stars and heavens, they comfort me.
The vastness of thy sea upholds me.
Surely fair winds and safe harbors shall be found
All the days of my life;
And I shall moor, fast and secure, forever.
Amen.

I've been checking this thread daily, hoping that no news really was good news. This is very sad. I know it's a cliche to say especially for someone so young, but it's true, when you see someone go who would have contributed so much more to the world, had they just been able to stay awhile longer.

Farewell Dave.

As far as a donation, I'd agree with the idea of a heart foundation of some sort as a good candidate. I'm pretty close to Dave's age and I have heart disease too (and know many others in the same situation), so my bias is pretty obvious. This kind of loss just really hits close to home for me.

it means a lot to most of us its a communion with our own type that
we are not able to experience in our home cities.
subsimmers are not that common overall.

the truth is that this can happen to any of us.
and will again at some point.
I like to think that community procedures for such
occasions are sort of being framed in here.

I hope to still be posting on subsim on my 2nd last
day on earth,
(where possible the last day belongs exclusively to my wife)
I expect my last post has about
a fifty percent chance of being a dig at RDP.
I have found a home for my passion
here. and a place to express it and share it with
others of the same ilk.

I would regret not being able to, I think.
Here among my peers is a good place in my heart.
if my turn comes I will consider myself lucky
if im only half as missed as Dave is now by
the community.

I didnt know dave we exchanged a single post once.

but sometimes I am just dazzled by the beauty of it all

in mods not yet dreamed up by modders not yet

I am deeply saddened by this news. And by the number of posts here, it is obvious many are.

I find it hopeful that even though we learn to know each other through a forum like this and likely never will meet face-to-face, there is still room for genuine caring and human understanding. Friendships are built. The electronic age cannot crush the human spirit.

Today, people all over the world will mourn Dave's passing. He leaves us a fine legacy and example. Whenever I see a sunrise or sunset in Reflections on the Water, I will always see Dave--still shining through.

I was here for something else though; ATI/Nvidia cards and game mods for this game, especially ROTW. I'm considering an ATI 1950PRO and want to know how much worse it plays the mods than Nvidia cards. Any personal experience/tweaks/patches to make it work as good as the Nvidia cards??

Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

Things are not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this cant be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now he's gone
