I disagree, in all honesty magic is king in this game. I can literally sprint thru caves and kill everything without getting touched once. Stamina has no affect on a mage so sprinting away is fine. As a Sneak character I'm having more fun, yes. But I'm also clearing things slower, I can't sprint around like a jackass one I have to stay hidden, and two if I run around like a jackass I'll have no stamina to fight whatever I run into. Also my mage can one hit giants and fling them into the air. Fact. Lightning Storm, boom Giant sprawls around in ragdoll.
This is exactly why I stopped playing as a mage. Magic is, essentialy, a second difficulty modifer. The game gets pretty boring, and quickly. Bethesda did take some steps to rein magic back in, like the elimination of custom spells, but after level 30 you are pretty much a god. Regardless of power, you shouldn't be one-shotting boss level enemies; that kind of gameplay just ruins the experience.

At level 33 and with Legendary deadric armor and ebony weapons, I realized I no longer have to run from giants. Although I still do because they do take big chunks of my health. I just run to a spot where I can get a quick shot in before he catches up. Giants don't count as human's so they're soul trappable. Quite an easy way to fill Azura's star with greater souls.
Other than that the only thing to really give me a challenge are mages who eat through my health(think magicka ignores armor)
Edit: Fists fights with full armor are a bit of a laugh. For one it takes a while to whittle down the enemies health with my fists(really need the perk), but they usually do minor to now damage because of the armor.

Yeah, with my stealth character I'm not using any magic whatsoever. Although I had to cheat my own rules a tiny bit and use flame for the theives guild quest.. is there any other way to catch those things on fire... seriously there needs to be a non magic way to do that.

I think the game assumes everyone gets the basic flame spell. They still kind of lead you by the hand in quests. I couldn't think of another way as I came across that. (Was still fun terrorizing those shopkeepers, I felt like Tony Soprano)
The true challenge is getting to the quest area without getting distracted by side quests. My journal is a mess!:O:

I randomly do any quests that come my way, have joined no guild/faction I did all that with morrowind and oblivion, so this time I am avoiding them but playing this way I am leveling up very slow and I still don't have a gear set yet just the odd Dwarven pieces I get from end quest chests probably why I am lvling up slow my gear is rubbish. If I could play every night might be different but another family member plays skyim on this pc as well. I also make it a habit of running to the quest area instead of the shortcuts fast travel as for me the best part of this game is running around in the wild Ive given up on a horse as ive had two that have died from sticking their nose in a fight. For me I don't want this game to end and I think the way I am playing it probably never will.
I read here of players who have reach lvl 30 something one is on lvl 48!

I only just hit 20 last night. My smithing is pushing just near 81, looking forward to getting Deadric so I can craft a full set of that. Then I'll just wade into battle and slaughter my enemies.
I joined up with the Companions of Whiterun for a few quests last night. Interesting storyline that leaves much loot in a dungeon so I'm going to have to make a few trips there and back again selling stuff and plundering. Though I refuse to join the Circle, don't want a non human on my first run through.
Funny story, I lit out to mages college (only to discover I couldn't get in due to not having enough magicka to cast the spell required, bloody magic users) and had to take down a dragon just after I arrived in town. Looted him and headed back to Whiterun where another Dragon was waiting for me, which was good because I got Lydia to give me a hand killing it. Now there's a massive dragons skeleton just next door to Breezehome. I've now killed 1 storyline dragon and 3 random ones.

I have a level 48 "ArchMage" and Now a level 20 Assassin. Leveling goes quick for me. By the time I leave the first quest (Golden Claw) I'm level 9-10, and then by the time I make my way to High Horothgar I'm in the high teens. Just got to Ivarstead killed a few wolves and popped level 20.

Without spoiling anything -
Make sure you do all of Aela's quests for the Companions before talking to anyone else in the guild/doing any other quests. I'm stuck with the quest named "Retrieval" with no way of completing it and no one else will give me any quests with that one open. I've essentially broken the entire Companions questline.

Getting charged by a bear as a mage. "Everybody stay calm, let me just go ahead and turn my hands into explosive force of nature and take care of this pest."
Getting charged by a bear as an assassin. "Oh god, oh god, run faster, much faster.... please come on WHY CANT I JUMP ON THAT LEDGE ITS SO FREAKIN CLOSE!!! **** Mauled by a bear... I'm dead."

Did you attack the Silver Hand garrison at Driftshade Refuge while completing the quest? That will break the line as it is used in Purity of Revenge. The same thing happened to me, so I had to use a previous save and complete the line up to that point agian, but leaving Driftshade alone. The questline proceeded normally for me.

I broke it at some point while doing Glory of the Dead. I talked to Aela at some point during that quest and she gave me Retrieval. Obviously I can't go find the fragment of the axe if I have the complete axe in my hand. :-?
I'm restarting a battlemage character anyways. Maybe I'll just go with that instead.

I just came across my favorite character from all of TES.
Sheogorath!
Just as nutty and hilarious as expected, though not as good as the laughs I got from the Shimmering Isles in Oblivion, he was still awesome, chock full of great quotes. I think it was the voice actor, sounds different. Not as Scottish.

I just looked through the art book that came with the collectors edition. Some of the early Hagraven ideas are quite grotesque. One idea was to have them wearing "meat" skirts with bits of eyes, ears, mouths, etc. Kind of like Hannibal Lector. Another idea was to have their heads look like baby birds. To think they could've been creepier than they actually turned out.

It is still Wes Johnson, but he does sound different. I imagine he should, as the Champion of Cyrodiil becomes the new Sheogorath at the end of the Shivering Isles expansion.

Ahh yeah ok. Maybe it was more an issue with my expectations (based on Shmmering isles, a fleshed out expansion who features the prince of lunacy exclusively) rather than a relative throwaway puzzle quest as represented here.
I actually got happy when I saw him. He was a sadistic hoot, and one of the more interesting of the daedric gods. As evil as he is portrayed, he was always fair in mortal dealings. He justs seems to me more out for a laugh, than to hurt. Just sometimes hurt happens in the process of a laugh..Jeez I sound like him now. :)

Sadly, the combination of the gate, a Draugr Scourge and one of my fireballs spelt the end of Uthgerd the Unbroken...who shall forever be remembered as Uthgerd the somewhat broken but we can still put her remains together and give her a decent burial site.
Incidentally, after firing countless waves of fire, arrows, lightning bolts and everything else I can think of at this Scourge, what did I kill it with? The same trap that Uthgerd got stuck in...

I never use horses anymore. After purchasing one and shelling out 1000 of my hard-earned Septims, I am riding along happily. I see some bandits in a fort ahead of me, so I dismount and run forward to engage. My horse, in a fit of suicidal rage, charges ahead of me in order to attack the bandits and is promptly shot so full of arrows that his corpse looked like a porcupine. Of course, after that it was beast form time and they fled in vain as I mauled them to death, but I was still out a lot of money in the end.
I walk now.
Probably for the best, hopefully a patch or DLC will add horse mounted combat...I'm not expecting Mount and Blade style combat, but not needing to get off your horse to hit the bad guys would be nice, and would also make a point to that pretty armour DLC that they'll undoubtedly be flogging other than to Pimp My Horse (TM).
I've also noticed that the view automatically switches to Third person and seems rather stubborn to leave it whilst on horseback, is there a way to stop that? I prefer first person views for everything wherever possible.

I also would love the first-person view on horseback again. It was handy, as you could swivel your head while keeping your horse moving down the road. Mounted in Skyrim, I find it much more difficult to see potential threats. Damn spiders are always sneaking up on me that way.
Honestly, I am okay with not having mounted combat. All I want is the horse to have a 'passive mode'. I left him far enough away that he was not going to be attacked, but as soon as the bad guys aggro'd me he was all piss and vinegar. And then he was dead. Last horse I'll ever buy. :x

I'd be ok with (once again) not having mounted combat if Bethesda would patch
out all the wolves and skeevers. I mean, those things are so darn annoying!
They can barely even hurt you at level 1, so what's the point of having them
around attacking you? :nope:

Get frost or Shadowmere.... I can tell you right now from my personal in game experience they can both SOLO a dragon, that being said Frost solo defeated an Elder dragon in completely fair one on one combat while I simply spectated.

My current character, the upstanding Harbinger of the Companions and leading citizen of Whiterun would probably not have dealings with the Dark Brotherhood or Black-Briars. However, those horses are indeed excellent options for more shadowy characters. I used Shadowmere extensively on my assassin character.

So I wake up in a lock shack and told the only way out is for someone to die. :hmmm: After taking the key and freeing the rest of the "prisoners", I pay a visit to the local Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. With the help from an Imperial Commander, I breeze past the black door. Unfortunately for those inside, they weren't expecting me. It's funny how many trained assassins would try to run and beg for their lives as soon as the battles started to turn into my favor.
Hopefully this will put an end to all the assassin's that keep ambushing me, and the 3,000 gold reward is nice too. :yeah:

Seriously the dark brotherhood missions are probably the best questline in the entire game. Hands down. Ciero is insane.. and the quests are pretty fun... right up to the point you have to put on your chef hat to make a lovely royal dinner!

Agreed. And it was the best questline in Oblivion too.

Thus far I'd say...
1. Dark Brotherhood- its just the best story, best content, overall the best.
2. Thieves Guild - Pretty good, up until the end... I feel like the end was just sort of... out of character.
3. Companions - Its ok... fairly predictable and expected RPG quest line with a cool suprise for you if you want it.
4. College of Winterhold - Horrible, worst questline in the game... just completely boring. literally just beat it to beat it and become Archmage. Story sucked.
Bard College... not sure why they even bothered but ok I did the quest.
Becoming Thane at all the major holds could have been SOOOOO much better but as it is you help the Jarl, then help a few random NPC you get a title and a housecarl woo hoo your a member of a jarls court. not that cool really.
+I didn't want to mention the main story, or the Rebellion because I haven't actually finished those quest lines. All of the Daedric quests have been GREAT so far, but I will say Mehrunes Dagon's was sorta phoned in...the reward is worth it though. I loved Sanquine though... lol great quest. And Mohlag Bohl or however you spell his name.
Takeda Shingen
11-23-11, 12:31 AM
I'd also agree that the College of Winterhold questline is kind of lame, which is a shame given that the Mages Guild questline in Oblivion was second best only to the Dark Brotherhood. I'd also agree that the Companions is good, albeit predictable, as you had stated. I haven't done the Thieves Guild line yet. Guess I am going to have to roll a thief.

Just had a chat with a mage at the college: she asked me if I would volunteer as a test subject. First attempt didn't go as planned, so after the spell wore off we gave it another shot. That time it went completely down the drain, but she fixed it after a few attempts.
Me: "Let's not ever speak of this again."

I love the Jazargo one of the Mage followers... lol.
Whenever you talk to him he says "If anybody tries to sneak up on us I'll smell them. Or maybe not, I guess we will see."
I wished the game world would actually give a hoot about the whole Dragonborn business. :-?
Me: Can I enter the College?
Lady: If you can prove you know magic.
Me: Listen lady, I can summon a dragon on the spot, freeze you in an instant
then burn you and finally blow away whatever remains of you like leafs with my shout.
Do you REALLY want me to cast that fireball to get in?!?!
Lady: Yes.
Or
Me: Hey Jarl, can I buy a house?
Jarl: Sure, after you prove you're a good guy buy helping out, give money to
beggars, help the citizens with their problems and so forth.
Me: Dude, I'm the Dragonborn. You know, the guy that kills dragons like it's nothing,
absorbs their VERY souls and uses them to do fancy stuff. Oh and can I remind
you dear Jarl that I am probably the one who is going to save your city somewhere
along the line?
Jarl: Just do the damn quest or you'll get nothing!

But yeah, the people care about as much about the whole "dragonborn" thing as I do. Every time I painstakingly pelt a dragon to death with arrows, I realise "oh right, I can use shouts".
Would be kinda boring, wouldn't it? :hmmm:
Yes, it would. :yep:
But they should've implemented the whole Dragonborn thing differently, imho.
As it is, you start at the top very early in the game, having pretty much the
same status you had in Oblivion when you finished the MQ line, well you should
have but as stated, no one gives a crap. :O: Just breaks the immersion for me. :-?

Now that I think about it, that general "reputation" stat seems to be absent... There's still the responses from guards, commenting on your skills (I swear, if one more asks me to brew him an ale...), but can't say I've heard anything Dragonborn related.
Actually, when you slay a dragon and absorb its soul. People will run over to the skeleton to gawk and will give relevant responses in dialogue, but that's it.

Factional reputation is one of the two things that I would have liked seen added from the Fallout series that just didn't seem to make the cut. If I become Listener of the Black Hand, people may not know that this is my job, but I have killed enough people for them to know that when I am around bad things happen. As such, honorable groups like the Companions shouldn't really want anything to do with me. Also, you can sign on with the Imperial Legion, don your Legion uniform and saunter right into Windhelm, the center of all things Stormcloak, in broad daylight and no one says a word. That just shouldn't be.
The other thing is limb damage. It makes maintaining a players health much more interesting.

I wouldn't bother with Oblivion, honestly. Its dated, the level system sucks.
If anything I'd jump in Morrowind... level system still sucks, but the bad guys don't scale to level. Also you have to read most of the game because there isn't very much voice acting but still its the better game.

Oblivion still is a beauty, visually, and a game worth to be played. Maybe Skyrim surpasses it visually and in some game mechanisms. That does not make Oblivion suddenly a bad game, though.
Keep in mind that you can get it without Steam, in one pack with Shivering Isles and maybe even Knights of Nine - for 10 Euros.
Also keep in mind that you need the time to play two such monster games. Much time. Very, very, very much time. ;)
Takeda Shingen
11-23-11, 06:43 PM
No, Oblivion is not a bad game at all. If you have not played it you should do so; it is completely worth your time. In that respect, you should play Morrowind too if you have not. Hell, Fallout 3 and New Vegas are must-plays as well, if we are to run down the Bethesda's greatest hits list. However, I will echo the sentiment that Oblivion's leveling system does indeed suck.
That being said, all of those games plus Skyrim should keep you busy for the next decade.

Damn straight it is a great game. Can you imagine this thing next year when it is mature? After the DLCs are out and the modders have had time with the construction kit (which I imagine will be released eventually), this is probably going to be the greatest RPG of all time. I'm almost embarrassed to say how much time I have spent playing it thus far. :haha:

No need to be ashamed. I am an RPG nerd. You should see my Ultramarine models I just got. I can't wait til Saturday night at the nerd ranch, where people equally as pathetic as me meet to play tabletop WH40k :D
My steam name is the same as my name here, so feel free to see how pathetic I am. (I will add all known subsim folks)
All sillyness aside Bethesda has never disappointed me. Fallouts were awesome, I loved all TES games. They mastered the open sandbox world. Even more so than the Grand Theft Auto series, which is also a good sandbox game.
I will have to pry myself away to play Assassins Creed: Revelations when it releases for PC on the 29th. I may not be able to.

This game is near perfect, this game is a mmo killer for me and that's a big thing cause I love my mmo's no other rpg has come close to wanting me to stay away from online gaming. Recent sp rpgs like DAO, DOW 2, Fallout 3 good games but after a few days i would log back into my favorite mmo. With Skyrim I haven't log into an mmo since I started playing on the 13th Nov. Skyrim is the cure for mmo addicts.

Just sharing a great tactic with folks who appreciate the info.
I been testing this for an hour, works on most creatures, alive and undead.
When sneak shooting with your bow, and you know you can't one hit them, hit the enemy, then quickly fire an arrow into an object (it don't matter, just as long as it kicks up dust and makes a thud) in front of them (or opposite direct that you are) If your sneak is up to par, then they will investigate the sound of the arrow strike and not you, allowing you to finish it off.
In case you care. :)
^ I just shoot another arrow at the target, usually takes care of it before I'm detected.

^ I just shoot another arrow at the target, usually takes care of it before I'm detected.
I should have clarified a little better.
Tactic is great (best) when there is more than one enemy in the room. Both will investigate (the intentional miss) allowing you to finish the first one off, leaving you in a better strategic position. And give you time to shoot the second one with a sneak bonus.

New feature I loved.
Remember in older TES games if you killed someone alone, out on the road, you will still have that bounty? Made no sense to kill a lone man, and still be charged.
No more!
I found a noble and a guard on the road, and decided and arrow would look great in them.
I got the murder bounty for shooting the guard. I then shot the horse out from under the noble. Them jammed a fire enchanted sword into his gut.
Some message about last witness eliminated, and my bounty was gone.
Sequels are supposed to get worse and not better. WTF is Bethesda thinking?:D
Thanks to them for not killing the franchise, and keeping it fresh.:salute:

Finally upgraded to Ebony armor/weapons last night. Glad I did. My sword and board Nord is now a walking tank. Helped out Mjoll the lioness from Riften by getting her favorite sword back from Dwarven ruins. Barely got scratched by the boss at the end of the place. And I helped an orphan from Windhelm (aka Racism central) kill a mean old lady running an orphanage. The kids love me but the hired help is scared of me and ran away screaming when I approached her. Lots of fun. Now if only I didn't stay up till 1am this morning doing them I might actually get some work done today.

In other news, the Dark Brotherhood is no more in my game. They didn't put up much of a fight when I came a calling. Also helped an old lady find her lost son, who then decided to go native and rejoin the Stormcloaks. Now I need to work on owning property all over the place, lots of work ahead of me if I want a home in every town.

Here just wanted to share this build. This is the mage build that I made, from level 1 on up I had no trouble whatsoever and by level 20 you will be an unstoppable god at the highest difficulty level. Infact by level 40 I had to switch to another character because I felt like I had enabled cheats.
I put 250 in health and everything else in Magicka, ignore stamina, its completely usesless to a mage.
Every fight enable your allteration shield, wear only cloth for your mage armor bonus. if your getting hit hard, attempt to move, if you can't throw up your ward until you can get out of the way of harm.
as far as combat tactics go, summon in whatever you think would fit the situation flame/Frost/storm. And then begin to attack via dual casting your fire spell or lightning spell of choice. Flame for most enemies will shred everything, but Lightning destroys dragons and magic users in seconds, as well it moves at the speed of light.. so missing with lightning almost never happens.
I built enchant up so that I could get the gear I wanted, I took whatever I could get the most enchantments on, so gloves/hat, cloths, boots, ring, necklace, headband.
If anybody needs any further help let me know, I just wanted to post this up for anybody interested in a mage.
I'm really not sure where all this bussiness about mages not being glass cannons and not having the damage output they should, once you have the right gear and right spells, perks, etc you should be able to two shot an ancient dragon, and no more then three shot a giant if you have to use something LESS then a master spell.

I made myself a Breton mage along those lines to try out the College of Winterhold line and see how it was playing a dedicated magic user, which I will repeat in saying was probably the worst story arc in the game. For me, magic is just way too powerful, becoming almost another difficulty modifier. Now I am back to the good old Breton thief. Bretons because of the magic resistance, of course.

I just finished the main quest and College of Winterhold quest with a full on destruction mage Nord. Tak, you're right. The College quest was....meh...it felt like a glorified side quest, not a full on faction quest. And Drew, you're also right: there's not a lot that can stand up to dual cast firebolts when you're fully perked out with a ton of magicka. I used the Morokei mask, as well as Savros' amulet and robes and some enchanted ring I made that added something like 50 extra magicka points. I was a fireball flinging machine.
The early game was a little rough, and I died quite a bit. Once I got Lydia and started using her as a tank, things got really easy. By the end, Draugr Deathlords were the only thing that offered any challenge, and even then it was a small challenge. The Impact perk is very overpowered in my opinion...I was spamming dual cast firebolts at everything and stunning them, and my magicka pool was so deep that most everything was dead before I ran out of magicka and it had a chance to do anything. Alduin was cake.
I'm going for a dark elf assassin now. I haven't really played a stealth archer type since Morrowind. Should be fun.

That was exactly the same experience that I had, although I was an ice mage. I died a lot in the early levels, but after level 20 you are almost god-like. And once you have those archmage robes you can just forget about ever running out of magicka.

The trick is to perk to 'impact' in your destruction tree as fast as possible, all extra points need to be spent on alteration to get to mage armor for your survivablity. Conjuration can be built on an as you need basis.
I tend to fight without a follower, but I always have one Artonach summoned, either Flame, or Storm dependings on the type of destruction I'm casting as it won't hurt my summon. If you stick to my build and my forumla not even the early game is difficult, although levels 1-10 you might be alittle more reliant on zombies, and possibly any staff you have as magicka can be a slight issue but not much.

I very rarely used the mage armor or wards I guess because I did have a follower. Most anything was dead before it could close into melee range with me, and I was using a lot of conjuration magic to add even another follower. I was summoning Atronachs and abusing the hell out of the Sanguine Rose, and then late game when I got the Summon Dremora Lord spell, that was all she wrote.
I suppose next time I try a mage, I'll go without a follower to try and bump the difficulty.

Back in Morrowind, the character creation process featured a series of questions. One of them was about what you would do if your sweetroll was stolen. This continued in Oblivion with an NPC bark where you can hear one telling another about how he threw his sweetroll at the enemy, as well as a character in the Shivering Isles expansion who wants a sweetroll before he will help you. Then in Fallout 3, part of the tutorial quest involves a bully trying to take your sweetroll on your 10th birthday party. The sweetroll was intended to appear in New Vegas, but was cut. The Skyrim line references the sweetroll history.

Actually the sweet roll thing stared way way back in Elder Scrolls: Arena.
edit: Found the actual question asked in Arena
While in town the baker gives you a sweetroll. Delighted you take it into an alley to enjoy, only to be intercepted by a gang of three other kids your age. The leader demands the sweetroll, or else he and his friends will beat you and take it. Do you:
a) Drop the sweetroll and step on it, then get ready for the fight? (Warrior)
b) Give him the sweetroll now without argument, knowing that later this afternoon you will have all your friends with you and can come and take whatever he owes you? (Mage)
c) Act like you're going to give him the sweetroll but at the last minute throw it in the air, hoping that they'll pay attention to it long enough for you to get a shot in on the leader? (Thief)

Skyrim is very intuitive and extreemly forgiving. And, honestly, I have been reading that some of the things in that guide are incorrect, so you are better off playing 'from the hip', as it were. Welcome to your new obsession!

First impressions, it looks beautiful... but all the voices are way out of sync with the animations and there is terrible lag on the mouse and pointing/clicking is a nightmare, not to mention just trying to look around. FPS seems really bad, choppy and slow, response time to movement commands is also problematic. Basically I feel like I have no way to really control where I'm looking or going in a way that is conducive to decent gameplay.
Steam "detected" that my Options should be set to High but I'm wondering if I should back them down a bit? I tried changing them to Ultra High and it wasn't really any worse so I guess I could nudge them down to Medium and see if that helps. Or maybe I need to tweak something in my GPU software?
I've got as far as almost being beheaded and then the dragon came and then I ran into the keep and trying to get up the stairs was terrible because: see above. Then I thought I heard somebody say to jump from the roof which I did but then I was just running around and couldn't seem to get out of the village so I gave up. You see THIS IS WHY I NEED A GUIDE. :O:

Yeah, sounds like you might want to turn down your settings a bit. My machine is probably a lot slower than your's and I don't have any such problems. You can also tweak the mouse sensitivity in the options section, which will help. In terms of going where you need to be, just follow the arrows on your compass. The game will litterally hold your hand through every quest.

Just read something elsewhere about making sure "use application settings" was selected wherever possible in the GPU software, which it wasn't in mine. So I've corrected that and I'm going back in.
I did tweak the mouse sensitivity in the game but it didn't help much, so I think it was more lag from slow FPS and everything being so choppy.
And I have it set to Novice, I need all the help I can get!

You'll be fine Frau. Just don't expect the game to hold your hand and toss you quest after quest. It's really up to you what you do and how you play. Welcome to Skyrim, hope you're ready to give up your life for a few weeks.
@Frau Kaleun
The in-game mouse sensitivity slider sucks nuggets, so head to Documents/My Games/Skyrim and edit it directly from the SkyrimPrefs.ini
The line you're looking for is: fMouseHeadingSensitivity=
The in-game full is (or was when I last played) 0.05, switched it to 0.1 and it helped a lot.
PS. Photobucket sucks nuggets too.

OMG CURSE YOU GUYS FOR TELLING ME HOW GOOD THIS GAME WAS.
So I went to some Jarl's crib to confirm the dragon attack at Helgen and how Riverwood needed reinforcing and then he introduced me to his wizard dude who sent me to look for some dragon stone or something in Bleak Fall Barrow which turns out it's at the TOP OF THIS BLOODY MOUNTAIN and it's taken me the better part of the evening to get up there but I finally did so I just entered the hall or temple or whatever after killing some more peeps and exited the game at the autosave. I'm on Level 2 now apparently?
Oh and I kept trying to go through some Grotto or something thinking it would get me through or over or across the mountain and this thing that looked like it was made out of a swarm of nasty bugs kept attacking me and killing me. So I didn't try that more than three or four times, lol. Then I ended up going through a pass and there were fighting skeletons and an apprentice necromancer who killed me once but I got him the second time. There was a human heart up for grabs on his workbench but I took a pass. :O:
So in my Skills or whatever it says I have the Dragon shout or whatever it's called but I can't figure out how to do it? I put it in my favorites and I keep trying to "arm" myself with it but nothing I click on makes it happen or at least I can't tell if anything's happening. So I've pretty much stuck with my sword and have stuck quite a few other people with it as well.
OH JEEZ LOOK AT THE TIME I GOTTA GO TO BED I HATE YOU GUYS. :D

Push tab, go into magic - shouts - click on the shout you want so the arrowhead shows up next to it. Then when you want to use the shout use the Z key (default key for me)
@FK
You need to kill your first dragon to activate the shout. Every new shout you
get, needs to be activated with a dragon soul (which, of course you get by
killing dragons).

After burning an embarrassing amount of hours into this game, I can say I am still not really done.
I am enjoying the scenery. Yesterday I stood on a rocky outcrop over a waterfall, watching (Skyrims verson of) the the aurora borealis. I looked down to admire the water and saw fish, specifically salmon jumping up the waterfall. Just then across the bank an elk darts by, followed by a little bunny.
It really was beautiful...
It disgusted me, I promptly told my wife Aela the Huntress to stand near the edge, and gave her a generous FUS RO DAH, that blew her into a rock sitting center stream, and laughed maniacally as she washed over the waterfall.

Yes, your racial powers and any other powers you pick up through the course of the game can be used by pressing the Z key. Go to the "Magic" menu and then look under "Shouts" and "Powers" to change the active one.

And to add on, you can favorite shouts and powers and bind them to your 1-8 keys, same as you favorite weapons and spells. Makes for changing shouts fast without interrupting combat flow. The usefulness of hot buttoning my shouts has been infinite. 2 or 3 are outright overpowered.
Also High Hrothgar gives you free dragon souls. (kinda)

I don't think the losing the weapon is a bug. I have forced my targets to drop weapons several times. Using anything with explosive force I believe has a chance of hand equipped weapons unequip and they DO fall on the floor.
ie: If the enemy pulls out a sword and you paralyze them they drop that sword.

I dont mean the bug as in weapon disarming, this one guy that when I fought him disarmed my weps causing them to fall to the ground somewhere, I found the hammer first time round but not the axe its no longer there on the ground - gone, disappeared, bug? It should still be there somewhere on the ground. This happened in a room so didn't have to look hard, but still couldn't find it. Was my best 2h axe at the time.

Also I finally had enough gold and swag to go back to the Underforge and sell some stuff and get a proper steel greatsword and some Nordic gauntlets and he had the prettiest horned helmet like mine only in steel and I wanted it so bad but I didn't have the money and I didn't want to sell any of my really cool stuff. Oh and I was made a Thane and they gave me some cool chick named Lydia to be my housecarl and apparently I've been summoned to High Hrothgar which, naturally, is AT THE TOP OF ANOTHER BLOODY MOUNTAIN.

Yeah, Lydia was killed in a Falmer-infested cave. The Falmer in question did stop targeting her, but she went into her 'wounded' position just as the arrow was released, and so ended her life.
Now, if this would only happen to a certain Bosmer from Riverwood who really needs to know when to stay the hell away from a man's wife! :x I mean, I'm the freaking Listener; you'd think that title would earn a healthy degree of respect through fear, but not for this clod. Yeah, it's... uh... er.... I think perhaps some type of intervention may be necessary. :O:
I've been off work since last Wednesday afternoon, combo of holiday and vacation time... and aside from the stuff I absolutely had to do, I've pretty much been spending all my time in Skyrim. *That* life is starting to feel more real to me than my real one, lol.
And it just keeps getting better and better, especially in the main quest line, it really is far more complicated than just "you're the hero, here's the villain(s), get it done." There's a lot more decision-making than simply identifying a target and planning the attack, seems like every other person you encounter has some personal axe to grind and wants you to take a side. And the great thing is, you can do that - or not - and the game still continues on, just like life. And there's a lot of grey area where you can see both sides of a conflict and don't have enough information to know who's right and who's wrong or if there even is any objective "right" and "wrong" to the situation.
And you don't really know what all the consequences of some decisions might be. I've had a variety of assassins after me for a while now, partly because I did something that I know *really* pissed off the Thalmor but the first contract on me was taken out before that, and I still have no idea why. :haha:
Anyway, faithful housecarl Lydia was killed somewhere near the end of the first act of the main quest, and I hired some magician dude to take her place as my questing buddy. To tell you the truth Lydia's tone of voice every time I needed her to carry something for me was really getting on my nerves - I could almost *see* her eyes rolling every time.:O: The magician guy was much more entertaining.
But I'd joined the Companions at some point and started hanging around more with them and, long story short, now I'm running the joint. Which was nice, cuz it meant Vilkas was honored to become my betrothed once I showed up there looking all available and stuff. We had a quiet ceremony in Riften - a couple other Companions attended, including the groom's brother Farkas. He didn't say much, except to wish us well, but I'm not convinced he was very happy about the whole thing.
(Please don't ever tell Vilkas this, but I'd actually started the ball rolling on the wedding plans on a much earlier chance visit to Riften. I had my eye on him early on, doncha know - the first time we hung out, he asked me to attack him and I knocked him on his butt and he liked it. Ever since then, I just knew he was The One. ;) )
But the marital bliss thing lasted about one day back in Whiterun, because having this badass warrior hovering about Breezehome like a hausfrau was just... too... weird. So I asked him to tag along on my next job and he got a little huffy and said it looked like I already had someone. Well, yeah, the snarky magician dude, so I had to dismiss him which gave me a bit of a sad but it was either that or have Vilkas back at Whiterun selling bits and pieces out of our front room and asking me about my day every time I came home which - WRONG. That is not the man I married, dammit!
He's a great quest buddy though, far more skilled and lots less annoying than Lydia ever was. The way he yells "VICTORY OR SOVNGARD" when he draws his sword in battle just makes my little heart go pitterpat. And would you believe he still manages to fix me a homecooked meal every single day when we're out on the road? All I have to do is ask. Honestly, I don't know how he does it - sometimes we don't even have a pot or fire, much less any food on hand. Now if only they'd programmed foot massages into the spousal duty business, my Skyrim life would be complete. :O:
I swear I'm gonna have withdrawal symptoms when I go back to work tomorrow. :wah:

I plan on buying this for PS3 so wanted to know any flaws it had on console. Obviously I know I'll miss out on console commands and such, but I really don't have the cash to buy a rig that can run this so my ps3 will have to do.
If you have plans on upgrading your PC at some point, I say wait for that.

Well, Oblivion was released in... err.. 2007? I'm still playing it, the last I checked
there was ~23k files for Oblivion at tesnexus.com On average a mod has 2-3 files,
so that's ~7700 mods for Oblivion.
And that's why it's worth it to get it for PC. Even if you get it late. ;)

I've only installed one mod but I set up JSGME for the game installation folder and used that. Worked fine, it was just adding a couple of textures. I have another mod I will be getting but I don't know yet what all files are involved since I haven't downloaded it yet. I'm hoping I can just use JSGME for anything that I want to add.
And yeah even on the threads for the couple of mods I've looked at, people are talking about issues with NMM. I don't even know what it is other than something to do with modding the game but I'm staying away from it if I can.
TBH, I think the rage towards that joke is just as overdone as the joke itself. It's just a joke, get over it...both sides! :O:

NMM is Nexus Mod Manager
Basics are very similar to JSGME, you drop in the .zip, make sure the folder structure
is correct and enable the mod.
Only tried it briefly when it was first released, but dropped it as very few people
were making their mods NMM compatible.
Dunno why they just didn't keep it like OBMM was: simple. :hmmm:

Yeah, I was telling some friends last week about how awesome it is, I mean the complexity involved... it really feels like a world where things happen and lives get lived that have nothing to do with what you as the main character are doing unless you choose to get involved, and then it's OOPS another quest added to your list which you can follow up on, or not.
Even the moral complexity is amazing to me, I've been in a couple situations where I had two choices to save my skin and both were, shall we say, equally repugnant. So I had to make a really difficult decision. It's so much more complicated than, "here's the bad guy, take him out and advance."
I just started a new game altho with more or less the same character type because I've decided that I want to join the Stormcloaks and do it earlier than what would have been possible with the first character I was playing. Altho it's hard to let her go as she'd leveled up quite a bit and has a lot of gold saved up. Mostly because I wanted to buy the house in Windhelm but apparently that's not possible without joining the rebels and (I presume) helping them win. Also because it appears to me that nothing is really going to happen with the civil war unless I choose to get involved so I might as well get in on that and get some experience from it.
Even that was a somewhat difficult decision, as I can see things from the perspectives of both sides of the conflict. A lot of the rebel Nords and their sympathizers seem to have a "Skyrim is for Nords only" thing going on, but I haven't seen any evidence of that from Ulfric himself so far. Whereas the Imperials may be less ethnocentric among the leadership in terms of integration of the different races, but they've allowed a bunch of snotty Elf supremacist thugs to openly persecute people for their religious practices.
In the end, my decision came down to this...
General Tullius (or whatever his name is): ordered me to be summarily executed simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Ulfric Stormcloak: OMG HAWT plus I really want that house in Windhlem.

That's how I see it as well. The Empire might have ineffectual leadership, but the only thing Stormcloak's xenophobes are doing is giving all of Skyrim to the Thalmor.

Well right now it appears that Skyrim is under the jurisdiction of both the Empire and the Thalmor, who are there anyway doing as they please to the population and with the Empire's official sanction (personal preferences of some Imperials notwithstanding). Maybe the rebels would prefer the option of an independent Skyrim fighting the Thalmor openly and losing, if it came to that, over a continuation of their current situation. IMO that would seem far more honorable to the Nord mindset.
There really is no all around good guy in this, and it will break my heart to have to take part in an attack on Whiterun and see the current Jarl deposed if the Stormcloaks win. Sad to think it could all be avoided if only the steward there would offer me a bigger house to live in. :haha:
He's relegated all of the Dunmer refugees off to a ghetto in Windhelm.
Please, let's not muddy the waters with facts. :D
I know, I know. But there aren't many black/white choices in this game and so when faced with two options that are equally unappealing in some way I choose the one that looks to benefit me personally in the way that I most desire (whether it pans out that way or not, is another question). Or I choose based on some gut instinctual reaction to the sum total of my interactions with representatives of both sides so far.
It's not perfect, but as long as Bunnies Slaughtered = 0, my conscience is clear. :O:

Well.....
It wasn't hard for me to pick sides. The thing that mainly made it REALLY is for me was the Thalmore. The whole idea of elven overlords who could tell me what i could or could not believe in got my gander up. That and the whole homeland thing. If there is ONE thing worth fighting for in this world, it is HOME.
Of course this is real world feelings creeping their way into a fantasy realm, but, here i could act on them. So im currently level 34, and pushing errr, more like squashing...the Imperials out of my "homeland." (Im playing the True nord / braveheart type) Even before I joined the stormcloaks, i made it a point to kill every Thalmore I saw. The trick is,to provoke them into attacking you first. Then you can slaughter them without any bounty.
Next go around, instead of playing as a "Beowulf" type of character, maybe i'll play a "Maximus" type of character. :O:

Probably not, but any character is going to have a hard time siding with the guys that just tried to have you executed.
I'd like to see the Thalmor try and keep a hold of Skyrim, it would be akin to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Never underestimate the Nords...and in the game.

Yeah, that definatly comes into play from the get go. In fact, I didn't realize the choice of whose side your leaning towards begins right after the dragon attack with who you choose to follow.
My first inclination was NOT to follow an Imperial, but the guy who I had something in common with .... the chopping block.

I usually play Bretons due to the fact that I like the magic resistance. And even though the Nords are doing the exact same thing to the Bretons in The Reach that the Imperials are doing to the Nords, I still have a hard time not wanting to side with Ulfric.

Imperial public executions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmMBQFnxrJE) also served to cement my decision. I mean, aside from wanting to run away from the people trying to behead me at the very start of the game. :O:

I'm considering joining the Imperials. I don't like the whole "Skyrim for the Nords only" stuff (maybe it's because my country has made some bad experiences with that:O:).
Besides the peace with the Thalmor was a forced one that won't last forever and I'm pretty sure both sides are already preparing for the next round and for that we need a united empire that can kick butt. Otherwise Skyrim will have to condone much more than a handfull of Thalmor roaming the land. So if you want to prey to Talos you have to make sure there will be an army that can knock some sense into those dark elves and that's nothing Skyrim will be able to do alone.

I followed the Imperial out of Helgen, but only because he was the first dude I saw who seemed as intent on getting out of there as I was. Plus IIRC he was the one who hesitated at my execution because I wasn't on the list, and he cut my wrists free.
The main reason I want to take a side is because it appears that the civil war storyline is not going to progress one iota unless I do, because the game has to preserve the status quo there indefinitely just in case I do decide to join up with one side at any point in my character's career. And frankly, having been to the Palace of the Kings numerous times in my previous character's adventures, I am sick and tired of hearing Ulfric and his general discuss whether or not they should send the Jarl of Whiterun a message. I guess that would be my job if and when I join the Stormcloaks, or given to someone else (or disappear entirely from the storyline) if I join the Imperials instead. Either way they ain't gonna shut up about it unless I do something. :haha:
This time around, I'm picking the Stormcloaks. In another life I may go the other way. Having so may options is part of what makes this game so awesome.

Yep, that was it.
Funniest thing was, after a while every time I heard them talk about "sending him a message" I started hearing the Godfather theme playing in my head. I was so waiting for Ulfric to say "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse." And then Jorlief would get a delivery and it would be a dead fish and suddenly my next quest would be "Going To The Mattresses."

Yeah, this sort of thing has happened to me several times, always (apparently) involving some random NPCs.
My favorite recurring encounter on the roads of Skyrim is when the thief runs up and demands all my valuables and I have a choice of giving up the goods, persuading him that robbing me is a bad idea, or intimidating him into walking away with nothing. I love it when I go for intimidation and it doesn't work, especially when I've got a full suit of ebony armor, a greatsword strapped to my back, and a level 90+ in two-handed weapons and heavy armor. DUDE ALL YOU HAVE IS A DAGGER.
Altho one time when it looked like he was gonna fight me anyway, I drew my sword and he was like "Oh I see your point" and just ran off.
I'd really love to add the dialogue option of "You call that a knife? *pause to draw sword* "Now that's a knife." :O:

Well, ive just finished the civil war on the side of the stormcloaks. Next time I'll go with the imperials. Neither side is neither completely black, nor completely white. It's a shade of gray, just like the real world. Although some of the results of the stormcloaks being in power, im not quite fond of. (insert Godwinesque observation here)
What I will find hard in my next game, is playing another race besides a Nord. I mean, its hard to believe an Orc would rise to become the folk hero of ancient Nord legends. That and all the skyrim trailers like the live action trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1AenlOEXao) doesnt exactly lend itself well to a Kajhitt now does it? :haha:
In the meantime there's this cloak and dagger action going on in the Thalmor embassy. I think after i accomplish my task there, i'll return, kick the doors down, and show those Elven overlords some righteous Dragonborn/Nord fury. :arrgh!:

Some won't fight you unless you hit them with either a spell or arrow, as not every dragon is after you. Also, some dragons will not fight at all if the terrain is not right. If you are getting the red dot on the compass, try moving to a more open area. The dragon should begin it's attack pattern.
