Played a bit today, but primarily focused on finishing my big 'final' playthrough of the now-complete New Vegas. Some initial observations:
The game, as many have said, looks fantastic. However, what I really dig is the new 'gritty' look. Gone is the ultra-sanitized look of previous elder scrolls games. People look like they live in houses that don't have running water. Lower-class homes look like lower-class dwellings.
Game optimization is fantastic. My machine is hardly state-of-the-art, but running at high, I get excellent frame rates. Had a CTD earlier, but that was after some extended running through the landscape, resulting in multiple grid loads. I get the same kind of errors in Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, so it really isn't a big deal to me. I like to move slow through these games anyway and almost never fast travel. You see a lot more if you take the time to walk through the landscape.
Details are everything. Bethesda loves it's flagship series and it shows. Having come into the inn at night, I rented a room, after which the innkeep came out from behind the counter and showed me upstairs to the room. No more friendly, yet vague directions about which room is your's. NPCs act a whole lot more like real people now, which is a real immersion booster.
Bethesda took my favorite things about their incarnations of the Fallout series and put them in the game. We've got perks, crafting and even a status message telling my that I was well-rested after waking up in the inn.
Melee combat seems clunky and slow. Maybe I am not used to the feel of the game yet, but I have found swinging my sword to be clumsy at best. Have been relying on my archery more, but this game could really stand to have a type of VATS interface.
I haven't even tried magic yet, and I am pretty tired right now, but I will probably start a fresh game tomorrow and give it a whirl then. Skyrim is clearly the 2011 game of the year, and looks like it will be an obsession of mine for some time.
Combat is clunky and slow - but it's been that way in the TES games forever and a day, hasn't it. I suspect PC mouse issues are also contributing to the feel of it a bit. There do seem to be some slo-mo finishing moves a bit llike in Fallout3/NV, so that's nice.
I've also only just realised that attributes are gone: no strength, dex, agility etc. As a big D&D fan something in my head is screaming 'heretic!' but If I haven't noticed until just now I don't suppose it's really been a problem. I also have a bit of a likeing for the class-less nature of the game. It seems much more fitting for such an open world.
Having said that, I want Baldur's Gate 3 to look like this. Pleeeeeeaaaase. :|\\
...but this game could really stand to have a type of VATS interface.

Clunky, yes, get used to it though. I've actually given up on blocking and just use a spell in that hand instead. Damage with magic a bit, try to dodge blows and get in a stab or slash where possible.
But yeah, generally open with an arrow (sneak attack). If that doesn't kill them, they often go into that staggered state, at which point I dash in and finish with the sword.
Just leveled up and I have to say, I really don't like the way you choose perks. It seems to be really, really fiddly and it's far to0 awkward to see what choices there are. Also, the game seems to constantly unsticky the hotkey for my bow, for some reason. Doesn't do this for anything else - just the bow. It was driving me spare. Also just crashed on me for the first time. These are minor things, though, and I have yet to experience any real problems so far, other than the fact it doesn't seem to be running as smoothly as I had hoped it would. I think that's a hardware problem on my part, though, as I've had GPU issues recently.
The weather effects are lovely. Just wondering around in the rain, with the mist cloaked hills and all - most atmospheric. As was noisily passing some trees and scaring a bunch of birds into flight - what a nice touch.
When I was in town yesterday buying it every person in every game store I was in seem to be buying it. I've never seen anything like it before, not even for really big games. I wonder how long it will be before we get the first DLC.
Does anyone know when we're going to get the editor stuff?
Interesting times with trying to optimise the game. First I changed a couple of settings for the mouse: In the Skyrimprefs I changed fMouseHeadingSensitivity to 0.1 and bMouseAcceleration to 0 which seems to have sped up the mouse control a lot. I also actually remembered to untick the xbox controller option in the in-game menus which is - strangely - on by default.
Graphics wise I was advised that lag might be improved by switching vsynch off by changing iPresentInterval to 0 in the skyrim prefs again.
Finally, and the one that seems to have made a truly massive difference, I disabled AA and ticked the FXAA box in the options. I'm able to run in Ultra again and in High it is very, very smooth now, especially inside where it occasionally seemed to get very laggy. Although it's apparently an Nvidia shader trick, it works well on my ATi 4870x2 so I recommend anyone having problems try it and see if it makes a difference.
I'll probably go back to High as it's still the better fit for me just now but Ultra is so, so lovely looking I'm loathe to change it again. :D
I think I'll by a horse to celebrate. :D

I ended up running away from the undead boss guy in the Barrow after I got the power word thing (which I've now discovered I need a dragon's soul to activate,) because he kept killing me over and over again and I got very bored with it. It it worth going back to a previous save and trying again? Does he drop any decent loot? I could always go back up and try again once I buy some new toys.

Have you seen thunderstorms yet? They're awesome. Also, I thought the birds were a nice touch too, until I realized that the bridge between Whiterun and Riverwood always has them as soon as you enter the area.

Yes, he drops a Quest-related piece of loot for the Main Quest. If you pick it up before you're required, the quest giver will remark on the fact you have it. Which I find a nice touch, compared to Oblivion where they wouldn't notice if you had the item already. Also, when you go back to kill him again, check around his area as there are extras in the area.
I have found a Dragon twice in the country side(both around Whiterun), but I can't seem to get it's bloody attention. I don't know if I'm not hitting it with my arrows properly, or if I'm not supposed to kill this one yet. I'm fairly certain it's the same dragon in both places.
Aaaah, Ok. I'll go back once I get some buffs and stuff. I've just improved my armour and weapons at the smith in Riverwood at the bottom of the hill so I'll get some potions as well I think.
Yeah, I've been through a thunderstorm. It was a thing of rare beauty. The mountain's looking mournful and mist shrouded.

That was a rather epic battle, was heading towards a bandit camp to do a bounty quest, out of nowhere a dragon attacks. In the midst of the battle the Dragon flies off and starts attacking a saber tooth tiger, who ends up also fighting me. In the midst of the action I stumble into the bandit camp that I was originally heading for, and end up slaughtering my way through the bandits. I lost sight of the dragon temporarily, but found it on the other side of the camp. It's currently fighting two wooly mammoths, with the help of the mammoths and my bow, we brought down the dragon.
Was a quite epic battle, and the best part was the fact it wasn't scripted.

So epic.
I have always loved wide open RPGs and TES has always fulfilled my needs.
Gonna be so hard to pry myself away when Assassins Creed: Revelations comes to my steam window in 3 days.:D
Last year was the same, with multiple great games coming out within a week...
All summer? Garbage, but come November, and all of a sudden you guys want to break my credit card!

I've gone pure mage... haven't bothered to lift a sword so I can't comment on the clunky melee, but I can tell you magic is pure awesome. Having a mage duel, or dodging for your life that massive two hander just to spin around and pat him on the back with lightning is such a joy. Very smooth very grand, love it.

I am tempted to make a wizard class character, but dont want to lose the 20 hours I've put into the game so far, it'll definitely be my next play through though.
I just learned a dragon shout that lets me blow flames, and I'm highly impressed. :haha:

I wouldn't start over on account of that... there is SOOOO much cool stuff in this game... it has thus far really worked its way into my heart. I can't put this thing down, hitting a dragon with a two hand shot of lightning and watching him literally stutter in the air then twist about and crash land has pretty much made my day.

Which is your favorite follower so far? Honestly Lydia is pretty much the one I have with me the most, but I have met a few others. So far Sven seems worthless in a fight, and Balimore(sp) is great but since shes a mage it turns into a caster fest, awesome in the open world but in tight caves she tends to get me killed getting in the way.

where are screenshots saved? F12 or PrtScrn doesn't save my shots. Do I have to add something in the skyrimPrefs.ini file?
Got myself a retail copy yesterday merchant was selling xbox versions and had one pc so I told him to hold on to it im coming now!:) Drove to Auckland (60k) just to get this damn game. Glad I did.
This game is jawdropping amazing I stuck to skyrims gfx recommendations at menu startup medium settings the detail is still very nice. That water detail . Have done one main quest in the dungeon - golden claw and dragonbon or something but now Im just going to head of anywhere and explore & brought a horse for 1k, Age of Conan could learn heaps from Skyrim's horse riding how to do it right. Even the horse is amazing to ride. lol.
Sleek UI, smooth gfx, damn realistic world that its quite scary at times. Only gripe I have is the weapon sets there is none, instead we have this save to favorites then Q key to change. But who cares the game is awesome. :D

Program Files(x86)/Steam/Steamapps/Common/Skyrim.
Took me a while to find them as well. Saved BMP format.
I'm getting used to the interface now and the more I use the favourites menu the more I like it.
Who else has seen the northern lights yet? My jaw dropped when I came out of a building and looked up.

You can add weapons to the 1-8 keys. Make the weapon a favorite, open the

I threw up a little in my mouth the first time I saw one (or heard, to be more accurate) one of those things. I hate gathering quests. Couldn't stand getting them the first time, hated gathering Nuka Cola Quantum, detested gathering Sunset Sarsaparilla Star Caps, so I'll be staying away. Plus, the rewards are never very good--a potion (not very useful), grenade schematics (that you can find elsewhere) and a laser pistol (which isn't all that powerful). Maybe Skyrim will change the trend, but I'll still avoid them for now.
On the plus side, the number of 'fetch' quests seem much lower in Skyrim. And those spiders are ever-so-creepy. They even move like real spiders, makes my skin crawl, which I suppose is the intended effect.

Hagraven... that freaked me out.
Put an arrow into it to stop magicka regenerating, so once I dodged a few fireballs it tried to close the distance. I'm backpedaling, pelting arrows while that wheezing breathing sound gets louder and louder, this thing drawing closer and closer...
So I turn tail and leg it, screaming "Stay away from meee!", huddling behind a rock some distance away to continue the barrage.
Normally I'd go to a sword, but I ain't going near those things. :haha:
And yeah, not a fan of the collector quests either. I'll pick stuff up when I find it, but I won't go searching specifically for it. Don't think I've ever finished one of those.
Hagraven... that freaked me out.
Hah, first thought it was just another "normal" mage there, then came the fireballs. :haha:
Took cover behind the rock, took a sip from a regeneration potion and sprinted
over the log. Shout + shield bash did the job, it didn't really do anything once
I got close to it.

LOL, she is very attractive. I dropped a my big frost buddy ontop of her then strolled casually over to her while she was beating on him tapped her on teh shoulder with some lightning and gagged a little when her corpse wiggled about seductivly. She does have pretty feet though.

I just ran into a Hagraven by complete accident trying to find a way up to High Hrothgar, which was rather unpleasant. Eventually I managed to avoid the fireballs of doom for long enough to get close and hack her down with my sword.

I didn't touch the preset difficulty so Adept I believe.
I really like the system for followers in Skyrim. Its set up really well, you can hire mercs, make friends, or pick up comrades with similar goals... and each one is a detailed person in the game.. Like I can go pick up a few different mages now but each one is a person studying at the college and they all have their own stories and lives. Very nice touch instead of "MAGE A FOLLOWER" "SWORD GUY FOLLOWER B" etc.

I've been using Lydia, although right now she's in my Whiterun home awaiting my return. I like the fact that followers are a bit harder to kill, at first I thought Lydia was invincible, but I finally managed to get her killed. Luckily I had saved a minute before as the enemy that I was fighting had killed me 2-3 times before.
Damn dragons, just killed my third one, I came out of a cave(beautiful cave that had a forest in it :o) and I'm climbing up a mountain, I hear a roar and think I'm about to encounter a bear, and then I hear the flapping. I turn around just as ice breath hits the wall near me. I whip out my bow and we go toe to toe, eventually I kill it with a barrage of arrows, some good ole swinging of my axe, and fire breath.
I think it may have been one of the easier ones, it did have less loot than the others I've encountered.
I've also encountered my first troll(bit scary in the middle of the night) and shortly after I killed the troll, I'm attack by an assassin. Apparently someone put a hit out on me, I'm not even sure what I did to warrant it.
As for the nirnroot, I've been saving mine, but after seeing some sold in a nearby store, I'm starting to think there may not be a collection quest for them.

I was attacked by a Dark Brotherhood Assassin and a group of particularly well armed thugs in rapid succession. The Assassing had a note that just says someone wants me dead, but the thugs' contract was signed by one of the Battle-Borns. I'll have to head around there and slit their throats when I have the time.

Battle-born's comment on the fact that I've been a good friend, so I don't think it was them. Speaking of attacking groups, I was attacked by a group of Thalmor, I'm tempted to attack their headquarters in Solitude, but that wouldn't go very well with me being an Imperial Soldier and all.

Actually, I think it might be that Nord from Riverwood. I did tell about his little plot against the woman he likes.
Edit: Brotherhood doesn't give up easily. Just had another assassin attack me.
Just inherited 100 gold pieces from an NPC that apparently died. The NPC in question was just a farmer I had picked crops for, guess I left enough of a mark on him that he wrote me into his will.
Oh the joys of using a controller, accidentally hit the shoulder button unleashing a dragon shout of fire. Luckily I missed the NPC that was infront of me.

So, to complete the quest to infiltrate Treva's Watch, you apparently have to fight your way through the back door to get to the switch that opens the main gate, when in fact it is entirely possible and much easier to climb up the mountain next to the wall and jump into the fort right next to the switch without bothering with all that...

There's enable/disable crosshair & HUD opacity slider in the game settings.
Alternatively, you can open the console and type tm (toggle menu). tfc (toggle free camera) might be handy too. ;)
NOTE: There's been talk that opening the console tags you as using modifications for that play session thus steam achievements aren't recorded. No idea if this is true or not.

Edit: Way late there.
So I had to do a quest for the Imperials where I delivered a letter to a Jarl in regards to placing Legionaires in his city. I'm already this Jarl's Thane so I figure that'll play into the story somehow. I get to the his stronghold, and talk to him about the letter, and he treats me like he's never seen me before. I then have to defend his city from an attacking force, after the battle he tell's me that I've done the city a great honor, and that he'd be honored if I wanted to live in his city. Mind you I already own the house in his city.
Not really a major thing, but it was a bit of an immersion killer. Would've been nice if he had remarked on the fact that I was his thane, and the fact that I already owned the house in his area.

The funniest moment in the game for me so far was beating up a woman, this nord woman with issues about being dropped by the companions reckons she could take me out so I challenge her to the duel besides this is Skyrim and it would be a dishonor to not accept a duel ;). Trading punches with a woman and beating her is the funniest thing ever :DL. Then in the same Inn I come across this other woman who was upset that the musician was making advances at her and she wanted him to stop. So I offered to help her out & beat the snot out of him. What got my blood boiling was he told me I was jealous. Me jealous of you! Your going down sucker! I should of rolled a Bard. :rotfl2:

I had to give this lady an amulet of talos her brother wore for a quest. She recognized that I got it before I needed too, and gave me a reward. I never received the reward, and I still have the amulet in my inventory, the quest also still shows active in my misc, although it no longer has a location. When I talk to her she thanks me for helping her out.
In regards to the giants, I'm level 18 and they still kill me in two hits, although when I encountered one at level 8 I realized the best way to kill it is to stock up on stamina potions, and then run back and forth shooting arrows at it. You can get one to two arrows in before he gets to your location. Best part is you can run straight past him if you're fast enough.

aside from some broken quests, and random bugs I have to say this is the best elder scrolls game ever. Ussually I just grind out and get the best spells. But I love how there is an actual sense of progression. I can't just buy all the spells now, things dont' exist until you reach the level to have them.
I know its dumb but it gives me this false sense of progression thru the game.

Finally bit the bullet and signed on with the Stormcloaks, who I believe were signed under the Motown label for a time. I figured that since gods are real in this universe, and Talos is one of those gods, that I should probably sign on with the winning side. After all, I remember the ending of Oblivion. Besides, no way am I licking Aldmeri boot.

Giants can indeed one hit kill you which sucks, but now at level 25 my Mage has some very potent spells and I can one hit kill them as well. Still Dragons seem to scale with your level so some of these guys, more so the 'named' dragons seem to resist extremely powerful spells really well, like "wall of storms" which does like 90 damage a second.

I went for the Imperials. The only way to beat back the Aldmeri Dominion is for the Empire to be united as one. If the Stormcloaks manage to take over Skyrim, they'd be easy an easy target for the Aldmeri Dominion.
I do like how they managed to create a gray section with the two sides, neither side is the "good" guys, both have their problems.
I just stumbled upon a Dewmer dungeon, lower levels are plagued with Falmer(who don't own me as much as they did when I was level 12(I'm 18 now)). I'm hoping that I don't run into another Dwemer Centurion though, they are a pain in the arse, and the only reason I managed to kill the last one was because he's too tall to follow me into narrow corridors. I just realized the awesomeness of giving Lyda a ice sword, she freezes them and I hit them with my fire sword, doing extra damage.

It is fantastic indeed! I have no idea how things will turn out, but I have given the decision a lot of thought. Nerd mode engaged:
Morrowind, Elsweyr and Black Marsh have already succeded from the Empire, with Morrowind in particualr leaving over the Talos issue. The Argonians are now on relatively friendly terms with the Dunmer leadership, which may have led to their leaving. What remains of the Dominion-led Empire is, obviously Summerset Isle, but also Cyrodiil, High Rock and Hammerfell. As we learn from the Redguard agents outside of Whiterun, the Redguard leaders are in, or close to, a state of full rebellion against Aldmeri authority. Now, people keep going out of their way to remind us [the player] that Talos/Tiber Septim was Dragonborn, and that there has not been another of those for a long, long time. This leads me to believe that future lore will have the player character in Skyrim become the head of the new line of god-approved Emperors. There is no way that the Dominion will permit a sort of 'Talos revived' to be the new Emperor, so it stands to reason that the old Empire will have to be destroyed. This would require the independence of Skyrim, which would fold on it's own. However, it seems likely that Skyrim would recieve aid from Morrowind and Black Marsh, with Elsweyr joining possibly, and revolt from the Redguards in Hammerfell likely. It looks like the battle lines would then be Cyrodiil, Summerset and High Rock against Skyrim, Morrowind, Black Marsh, Elsweyr and Hammerfell.

EDIT: Is it just me, or does the game world seem much larger than previous installments? I know they said it is roughly the same size as Oblivion, but it seems to take a lot longer to go from city to city. I think it is past time for me to invest in a horse.

The one problem I have with the stormcloaks is they want to kick out everybody who isn't a Nord. While I'm playing as a Nord, I've run into a lot of non Nords in Skyrim. But at the same time I'm against the no Talos worship of the Empire.

From my understanding Morrowind is mostly in ruin and invaded by the Argonians, so they wouldn't be much of a use. This is why there is a Dunmer population in Skyrim. The vibe I got from The Infernal City is that Black Marsh had decided to stick to itself. They had also left shortly after the Oblivion crisis, so I also doubt they would be of any use. The Elsweyr believe that the Thalmor are their saviors, so I also doubt that they'd join in with Skyrim. The Elsweyer are also part of the Dominion. If the Elsweyer hadn't left the Empire in the first place, the Dominion wouldn't have been able to attack the heart of Cyrodiil.
Edit: Oh and Hammerfall left the Empire shortly after the White-Gold Concordat was signed. They were opposed to ceding their land to the Dominion, so the Empire renounced them. They fought with the Dominion for several more years before the Thalmor signed a treaty, as the Dominion came to a stand still against the forces of Hammerfall.
I honestly can't blame the empire for signing the treaty, as they were hurting bad.
There is also the possibility that once Skyrim is free from the empire, that the Jarls will all fight amongst themelves Shogun style in hopes of becoming the High King. It's happened before, I know for a fact that Jarl Balgruuf thinks Ulfric is an ego-maniac, so I doubt he'd accept him as the High King. I still think that Skyrim without the Empire would be an easy target for the Dominion. Especially now that Skyrim has a Dragonborn to use against the Thalmor, and unite the Empire again.
Speaking of this conflict, wouldn't it be awesome if the DLC was about the battle against the Dominion and would reflect Skyrims current political state.
I am always afraid to take followers with me because I don't want them to die. Do they die, or are just rendered unconcsious?Lydia has only died once, and I think it may be because I hit her, and it was against a boss character that took me 3-4 deaths, and all my healing items to beat. Luckily I had saved right before I fought him so I was able to reload after she died and fight him one final time.
The only other companion I've had is one of the Companions who I think may be crucial. But so far from what I've seen is that your followers will fall to their knees and the enemies will then turn their attention to you. After a short while your follower will get up and continue the fight.
As the battle with the boss was hectic I don't know if it's because Lydia was hit when she was down, or because I hit her while she was down that killed her. She hasn't died since then though.

Speaking accidentally hitting followers. Stumbled upon a bandit camp while riding my horse. There were only 3 bandits that I could easily take on by myself. I'm firing my bow at one of the bandits when my damn horse runs in front of it while attacking one of the bandits. The arrow hits it and he goes aggro on me. I could still ride him but when I got off he'd attack me. So I killed him for the meat. Waste of 1000 gold. :shifty:

I doubt Morrowind would come to the aid of Skyrim, seeing as the Nords invaded Vardenfell along with Orc mercenaries. And I doubt that Morrowind would want to be on the same side as Black Marsh who also invaded Morrowind and drove everyone from Morrowind proper to Solstheim.

Hmm. I could have sworn that I heard or read that Morrowind and Black Marsh were on better terms after the abolition of slavery, but it looks like I was wrong about a lot of stuff. I might as well join up with the Dark Brotherhood after all, seeing that I already seem to be fighting for the bad guys.

Forgot to mention this, bought some meat from a vendor in Whiterun, everything I bought from him disappeared from his stand, right in front of my eyes, like I was actually buying items from him. Went over to the vegetables stand and it was the same thing. If their new stock shows up on the stands again I'm going to be mind blown.

Walking down a random road I see a chicken run towards me and past at full speed. A second later an arrow lands at my feet, I look up to see several forswon raiders pursuing the chicken. My dog instantly attacked, and I followed suit, made quick work of them. A dog, Two Mages, a Daedra, and a horse were a little bit more then a chicken.

Personally, I find they've done a great job making you feel like you're in an active world with things going on around you. You'll often run across Thalimor justicars on the roads, Imperial troops escorting Stormcloak prisoners, travellers, etc. It feels like the politics of the realms really have a bearing on what's going on around you. I can't quite place my finger on it, but Morrowind and Oblivion seemed to be missing something in that regard.

I have a Staff of Zombies(Let's you resurrect dead things to fight with you) that I'm intending to sell, but I have to wait until my local vendor has more money. I start to leave for the Greybeards place, when I realize I'm still carrying it, as I'm too lazy to turn around and put it in my house, I hand it over to Lydia and forget about it.
Continuing on the path we encounter a dead elk, and farther up from the Elk I stumble upon a Flame Atronach, who I proceed to do battle with. I beat her down with my Orcish axe and wonder where Lydia was during this battle, she has a legendary ice sword that would've cut the battle time in half. A second later she comes running up, in her wake is an Elk.
Not sure why an Elk is following her I swing at it and kill it, only to realize that she had resurrected it with the Staff of Zombies.

So there I was, exploring a bit of the countryside after visiting the greybeards when I got myself involved in my first random fight against a dragon. It lasted ages, with me going through all my potions and magika and soul crystals and I finally had the bugger - his health was empty and one more swing of my sword would do it, I pulled it back, swung it.....
....and the sodding game crashed to desktop. :wah::nope:

I hate when that happens, which is part of the reason for my compulsive saving habits. Fortunately, the game doesn't crash all that often.
I just had what is possibly the shortest fight with a dragon ever. Got attacked by one in the middle of the Winterhold College, and all the magic users walking around cut it to pieces before I could shoot more than a couple of fireballs at it. I think the whole thing lasted all of 10 seconds...
Arclight

Had something similar; riding out of Whiterun for Windhelm. Suddenly I hear a roar overhead and there's this dragon circling. So I do what any sane man would: run, as fast as possible.
A little way down the road I came to an old fort that I had cleared of bandits (just the outside though). Decided to make a stand there, luring in the dragon I actually managed to escape (he was rather pissed, circling just above the trees where he lost me).
On my 2nd try I kill the thing, only to find my horse not quite so alive as it was. Tried to raise it as a zombie, but didn't work out. :haha:
In the end I reloaded, parked my horse under a bridge a good distance away and had another go at it. Somehow the dragon spotted her when I lured him over, but she pulled through. That horse is just a magnet for trouble.
Kinda funny to see your horse attacking a dragon head-on while you're pelting it with arrows from a distance.

I'm pretty compulsive about it too usually, but I was just wondering around in a birch forest enjoying the pretty morning and minding my own business. :DL
The first random dragon I saw simply flew away - didn't even land or fight anyone - so I was well up for this one, especially now I've made myself an enchanted superior steel sword that does fire damage. I'm finding the entire crafting system in this game to be a joy to play and I usually hate crafting in games. I just wish spell crafting was still in it. DLC perhaps?
I thought Dragon Armor was only light. Have you made Deadric armor yet?
Both light and heavy Dragon Armor can be crafted. The light armor is AFAIK the
best light armor you can make, the heavy is 3 (IIRC) points better than Ebony
when comparing fully upgraded torso armor, so that is just garbage. :nope:

I'm currently taking the 7,000 step journey to the throat of the world. Bewarey of the wolves they said.
Wolves?
I've only encountered bears, frost wraiths, and frost trolls. I think I'd much prefer the wolves.
It also wasn't until marker V did I realize I could read the little markers along the path. I was halfway tempted to backtrack down to read 1-4, but I figure I'll just get them in reverse.
OK, I think I might have a bug here. The dragon reappeared at the same place, I fought it and the game crashed again just as it died. Hmmmmm. I haven't seen this reported anywhere else so far so I'm stumped as to what it could be. Bugger. It's annoying because once they are on the ground they are pretty easy to kill.
Fought a dragon elsewhere and it went down easy once I got it on the floor. Glad to see that killing dragons isn't bug in itself. The problem I had was with one near the little island east of Iverstead in case anyone has the same problem.

Yeah, same lake. There's a little ruined tower on the shore line beyond it which I'd reached when it attacked me. Now I'm not sure whether this is a random dragon spawn or not because the second time I fought it I had done the dungeon on the island, completed the quest for the girl's remains and gone back to town first.

I found the Island, but there was no Dragon. I continued east until I got to Riften, on the way I passed a Dragon Burial site(Alduin awakens the dragons from them one by one, this particular site was missing the dragon in question(you can tell by the crater in the center)), so It's definitely in the area. When I was heading down from High Hrothgar I did have one fly over me, so I think it may be the same one, I just need to encounter him somewhere in the area.

Spellbreaker is pretty cool in this one, both a physical shield you wield and it casts ward when you use it.
In other news I ran into an enemy that was nearly 100% immune to magic... and I'm playing a mage who refuses to even carry with him a dagger, or stoop to the level of a caveman and conjure a sword. Thus I pretty much became a healer while Lydia killed him.
Interesting turn of events as I have been up until now the major damage dealer the tactic thru me off when my spells had zero effect and I had to react lydia couldn't stand toe to toe and fight for long but we over came together like always. epic stories so far.

Out of curiosity. Is anyone else running it on a Radeon HD 5970? Its a 2gb card so it should be able to handle ultra right? The set up defaulted to high for me, and even then the frame rate stuttered on the intro. Might bump it up now that I'm in the game proper and see if it still stutters.

Edit: Egan, was the dragon in question green, and named Blood Dragon? If so I found him near Shor's Stone(East of Iverstead) and was able to kill him without a problem.

Edit: Started a Night to remember quest and stumbled upon a Daedric quest in Marlarth. It's pretty damn creepy, gave me chills, but I'm also playing in a dark room, so that contributed.

For some reason I can't marry Ysolda, haven't gotten the quest for her, despite wearing the amulet of mora. When my girlfriend was playing she got the quest the first time she talked to her, without the Amulet. I guess she just doesn't like me. Any other suggestions for a wife?

You can go back to riverwood and marry the that Camila girl in the shop where you returned the golden dragon claw. Also Aela the huntress is a fairly attractive wife if your done with the companions quests and you like violent women... lol. There are a few more scattered about, but I can't think of names... there was a lady in tavern somewhere that responded to the amulet but she looked like a dragon sat on her face...

I don't really care for Camila, if she's willing to marry me despite her involvement with the elf, she's not my type. Plus she's not that pretty.
Right now I'm thinking of Mjoll the Lioness or I hear the priestess in the temple of Dibella are marry-able.

Well from what I gather all the housecarls are marry-able (Yours, not the other Jarls)
But there are a few types of wives, obviously warrior wives Lydia, Aela.
Merchant wives which buy and sell and give you a portion of the gold they make Camila, Ysolda
And then the others i'm not sure..... but it seems basically there is 'trainer wives' and 'merchant wives' and I'm not sure if there is another type.

Well officially in Arena you could go thru the ENTIRE world of Tamriel. So... yeah the whole world has been done.
But honestly we know the next Elder Scrolls isn't going to do that anytime soon, so I'd say were going to well any of the remaining races homes, minus dunmer, imperials, and nords.
Also I think it goes without saying I bet the Skyrim team atleast the vast majority of them, save the few that will remain and pump out some dlc will be moving onto the next Fallout title. Yes Skyrim made them millions, and will for awhile but its a business and its back to filling the pockets.
I think we'll see a bunch of dlc and at least one full scale expansion pack before they move on to something else. What that something else is I don't know but I agree with you it's likely to be Fallout 4, which is fine with me.

My first game of the elder scrolls was Morrowind, when I first saw Morrowind I didn't have a clue what the game was about apart from another rpg what made me buy it was I liked the cover. The cover was just a damn symbol with the word Morrowind nothing mind blowing but that cover did it for me. Loaded it up for the first time thought this looks quite interesting then going through the character creation whats my sign? Enter the game and the first thing that I liked was the music the music was brillant for the world they created, then the game play, once I started running round I realized how huge the game is and the hard work they put into it. An amazing world for a first timer to the elder scrolls, jawdropping for me & gawd I died a lot at the start. Cliff Racers! :D

There are 19 shouts in total, each consisting of 3 words, so 57 in total, assuming none of them use the same word(which I don't think they do).
Of this I think 6 are quest related, that's 49 words out there to find. Although there are only 40 or so dragons, so it's not wise to unlock shouts you don't plan on using.
Edit: I hate the noise skeletons make, it bothers me for unknown reasons.

Incorrect Spike... the dragons are infinite. I've myself killed 38 dragons. And got a soul from every single one of them. That said there is only a limited amount of 'named' Dragons.. which are ALOT harder then just, Dragon, or Blood Dragon, or Frost Dragon... or.. well I dont' want to spoil everything. Needless to say there are named dragons you will encounter that have nothing to do with quest lines.. One is named Chilindel or something like that... yeah I dunno the spelling but he has some NASTY tricks none of the other dragons ever used on me.

Todd Howard said before release there would be a finite amount of dragons so you wouldn't be an unlimited amount of souls. Although this could have changed before release.

11-16-11, 06:41 PM
Todd Howard also said that the Dragons wouldn't "go away" after you beat the game. Also if that is true then my game is bugged because I get attacked ALL the time I ussually kill about two dragons in a four hour game session. On average i'd say.
However early today I ran into five dragons within a half hour. the reason I know this is because I was like WTF IM TRYING TO WALK SOMEWHERE!!!
*Edit Also I have all invested about 20 or so souls in shouts already and I have about 20 I can't spend because I have nothing to spend them on... so unlike perks I dont' think worrying about spending them is a major factor, and even perks don't matter. I'm nearly maxed out in the three perk trees I took minus the MASTER perk at the end of each one... so thats three more points I need and I'm only level 32. and I've saved my odd perks because I was afraid I couldn't max my focused trees...

Encounters might depend on time spend in-game. Could try slowing it down a bit, I've always played these games at x8 ("set timescale to 8" in console). Think I've had 3 random encounters with a dragon so far.

I don't get how you've only encountered that many dragons Arc... I mean they attack anywhere at anytime. Walking on the road, trying to sell stuff at the shop, resting in my home... seriously I went in my house just to have Lydia draw her axe and take off out my front door, I rushed after her just to see a dragon in whiterun torching the streets. I've probably got five or six dragon skeletons now piled up around the College where I've spent most my time, would be more but now my lightning disengrates bodies. (think fallout lasers)
Haven't killed more than 6-7 either with 39 hours played (timescale set to 8).

Might be because I haven't even been to those Greybeards yet. Not that far into the story. Or, like I said, might be time related. Could try slowing it down if the encounters are too much for you.

I found an open wall last nights as well. The area was actually full of Frost troll corpses which the dragon must have been fighting, which helped me out hugely. I'd rather fight a dragon than a frost troll any day - those things are tough and they really creep me out with their whole weird monster gorilla cyclops thang.
For me, Morrowind is still one of the very greatest CRPG experiences I've ever had. It's up there with Baldur's gate (1+2) and Planescape Torment at the pinnacle. The whole thing was superb, and I still love the atmosphere of that game; the sound, the feel, the strange animal calls, the silt-walkers. The whole thing. I put off buying it until it had been out for a couple of years because I managed to convince myself that a first person CRPG wouldn't work and I wouldn't like it. How wrong I was.
But not cliff racers. :damn:

There are mods that either remove cliff racers, or fix them so they are non-hostile.
The problem with the world wall I found was that there was the Dragon, who died next to the world wall, as I got closer to the wall to loot the dragon, a named Dragon Priest popped up. He was a pain to kill, Lydia went down several times and I went through several Health potions and major health potions. Was a welcome battle though, hadn't fought anything that had required me to heal myself in the battle in a while.

I'm watching this and related threads on other forums with some interest. Will probably pick the game up once it becomes cheaper and / or has some DLCs or expansions bundled into one package. I loved modded Oblivion, but reading about Skyrim has left me with feeling that it's...well even more Oblivionish than Oblivion (I suppose the official word in the industry is "streamlined"), and I'm not sure if that's what I want. I already felt they simpl...streamlined Oblivion too much in some areas compared to Morrowind.
Oh well, nevermind. Darklands is keeping me busy at the moment anyway for the foreseeable future. I'll necro this thread after some years have passed and I have lots of dumb questions concerning Skyrim.

My first saber tiger was at level 9-ish, almost killed me. Game gave me epic boss music to go with the fight though.
I just attacked a Fort in one of the Imperial Civil War missions. While the enemies endlessly spawned until a counter was depleted, the battle was pretty good, in the sense that I felt like a hero from a movie. I was taking on 2-3 people at a time and chopping them down. Not a difficult battle, but still cool none the less.

That being said I have a question for any of you guys that built characters perked in heavy armor. Whats your armor at? With only cloth robes 0 armor, when I bring up my magic defenses my armor is sitting at 390. Just curious how that compares.

Ok.. so really all in all 390 is a good number. Since I'm still fast in cloth, and really that is a high armor rate for somebody that ISNT supposed to get hit anyways. I mean if your playing a mage and you are face to face with somebody your doing it wrong.

For me, the biggest improvement is the leveling system. Skills level far more naturally than in previous installments, allowing me to play and grow organically instead of having to go into a tavern, enter sneak mode, but a weight on the keyboard and walk away. Leveling has never felt less 'grindy'.

I agree, Morrowind was a brillant game, and oblivion was meh... but the whole time you felt like you had to do... gamey, out of character stuff just to build up some skill or attribute.
Like... oh I need some more health, guess I better take my pure mage and level up heavy armor a few times so I can get an endurance boost, or you know whatever your example might be. Thats game breaking and completely out of character!!
The new Skyrim system works great, you just play and everything you do gets better, and the things you don't do just sit there and collect dust you dont need them. I can up my health or magic or carry weight whenever I want without having to increase some random skill.
Guess there has to be one in every crowd: My biggest complaint is the new leveling system. :DL
Why? The perks. My god, whoever thought of that should be eaten by a dragon. :nope:
Instead of getting better at stuff by doing it like in Oblivion, now you have to
do that stuff AND level up to get perks needed to unlock stuff.
If that isn't "grindy", I don't know what is. :O:

Yes, but the difference now is that there are no major or minor skill classifications, nor player classes. Every skill gain now counts towards leveling. Makes the process so much smoother and is a boon to people who play hybrid types, like me (One-handed/marskman/sneak/light armor/conjuration).

Hybrid here too, I planned from the start to play as a 2handed axe wielding warrior but along the way all that changed to 1hd/2hd/marksman/restoration/sneak/heavy armor/healer. :DL

I pretty much went into this game with one goal in mind, Breton Pure Mage. No weapons, no armor. That is beneath a man whom has dedicated his life to the study of magic, whose very body is a vessel of power.
lol... ok went nerd for a second. Anyways yeah I had from the very start one build in mind, Destro/Conjure/Alteration After acheving my build.. as I didn't want to gimp myself I was saving perks I realized there would be plenty more perks to go around, so I started perking Enchant which is HUGELY powerful at high levels with the right perks. As well as I dropped a few perks in rest just to get up to the magicka regen perk. all in all I'm level 36 right now and I pretty much have gotten everything I set out to build with plenty of room to grow So I might start branching out OR keep him the pure mage and build of the other schools maybe illusion for getting thru the theives guild or something.

very bad news for those of us who might be terrible *******s and still kind
of in denial about it. Because so far, thanks to Skyrim, I've had to admit

I have to say this is my biggest improvement. Too many times you "accidently" get a level in magic or something and mess up the maximizing of stats.
I found myself more worrying about how I did things, rather than using the most sound strategy to do them.
I am loving this game...Alot.
I love when you knock an NPC health meter down near zero, and they start crawling away begging for their lives.
I am currently trying to figure out how the insta-kills work. Initially I thought it was based on health of enemy, until I did it to an enemy I barely hurt.
I am thinking it is based on dodging and countering at the proper time. Anyone else got an idea?

I was about to try an orc armorer, considering I mostly enjoy sneak-assassins, and sneak-mages, even an occasional spellsword, I thought a heavy knight would be a good try. I'm glad I didn't bother.
The only redeeming thing, is this is still a new game, and they are going to patch it multiple times. So hopefully...:)

You could try an Orc-anything if you like Orcs. I've rolled a number of characters and I am finding that race isn't nearly as important as it used to be. My Nord is plenty sneaky and pretty good at conjuration, in addition to some excellent archery and one-handed skills. One thing that I do notice is that picking the Warrior Stone makes things a lot easier in the beginning, as your sneak and magic skills will not be up to snuff at that stage, forcing you to rely on combat skills in the early game. My Nord started as a pure combat character, but sneak tends to level on it's own (one of those skills that everybody uses) and I added conjuration after stumbling across a few useful tomes.

Cool beans!
I am finding Michael Hogan's voice work as General Tullius discracting, and not because it is poor. It is more of the curse of the Bethesda stock players, as I have come to identify his voice more with the kindly Doc Mitchell from FNV than the hard-nosed military governor. Same went for the Dunmer, voiced by Keith Szarabajka. When walking into the tavern in Dawnstar and hearing him talk to the locals, my first thought was 'the Burned Man walks!'

The world of Skyrim is very bleak, something the developers like reminding us of. I just found a cart turned over with 3 dead refuges in the snow, earlier I found a burnt down house with the charred corpses.

:yeah: awesome. There is alot to fix to make this game from epic TES to the best TES. Honestly it is more bug free upon release than past TES titles.
I came across a bug where the mission markers were wrong, I think because I sidetracked through a funny spelled cave I cannot pronounce or remember. I did find a shout in there, but without pretty Lydia I woulda been dead dead dead! Volsung was a pain in my rear end! Especially at level 6!
Dual wielding is a great strategic additions. I will forgo a shield to be able to offhand cast in some situations. Shouts are a great addition.
I am really far from beating the game, and not in a hurry to do so. But, what a great storyline so far.
So who is right? Imperials or the Stormcloak? I am so torn on who to join. Both have legitimate grievances. The more I fear "doing the wrong thing" the more I love this game!
Also, some guard whined about my sweetroll being stolen. Reeks of FO3. I bet the guards name was Butch.:D

The sweetroll thing is actually at least as old as Morrowind, where one of the questions for picking a class was what you would do if...
While in town the baker gives you a sweetroll. Delighted, you take it into an alley to enjoy only to be intercepted by a gang of three other kids your age. The leader demands the sweetroll, or else he and his friends will beat you and take it.
EDIT: Actually, I think this was in Daggerfall too, though I'm not certain...

I personally went with Imperials, figure Skyrim would be an easy target for the Thalmor without the Imperial protection, also Ulfric is a bit of an egotist.
I just made a full set of Deadric armor :D, also made a ebony sword and axe, found a bow earlier. Time to do some enchanting and I'm pretty much done with my armor/weapons. I personally sided with Ulfric, I figured my character would prefer Ulfric to be in power... so the College could continue to operate outside of and above the law which would surely change if the Imperials got to focusing on things in Skyrim, such as they have their own order of mages.
So the Mages of Winterhold back Ulfric and the storm cloaks... and its actually kinda a cool story and neat to see as I bring Jazargo along, a mage from the college as I'm playing thru the Stormcloaks quests.

On a more personal note.

Yep. I won't spoil how I came upon the quest, but it was beautifully organic, as are so many of the other quest discoveries in the game. I agree completely about the fact that warrior-style play was incredibly simplistic in previous installments, which is why I always elected for a sneaky character. However, melee combat has recieved a lot of love from the devs in Skyrim, and I am really enjoying it. That being said, I am currently playing a Nord who is adept at sneak, archery, one-handed (dual wield) and light armor. I'm having just about the most fun playing him that I have ever had in an Elder Scrolls game. I am still staying away from the magic because I feel it is overpowered, but the stealth combined with combat skills makes him pretty versatile.

Well, I'm playing it as an Imperial Battlemage, for want of a better 'class' description. One handed, destruction magic, heavy armour. I'll end up sticking spare perks into enchantment and smithing as I've found I really enjoy that side of the game.
My next run through I plan to play as a full on Axe wielding Nord warrior.

I haven't heard anything about it in game yet(haven't read all the books), but I do know it's in either Lord of Souls or the Infernal City(the two books).
It's been around 200 years since the destruction of Vvanderfell, no doubt it's
been re-populated to some extent by now. :yep:

From what I understand it was completely destroyed, the damage was severe enough to also ruin parts of Morrowind.
The impact causes Red Mountain to erupt and destroys the entire island of Vvardenfell, as well as causing massive destruction to the rest of the province.
From UESP, they're making it sound like it's gone.

The destruction of Vvradenfell is in The Infernal City, but I haven't read it yet (Though I'm considering getting it; Greg Keyes also wrote one of my favourite Star Wars novels) so I'm not certain how exactly it was brought about beyond the fact that it had to do with Red Mountain erupting.
Awww, now you spoiled it for Oberon! :rotfl2:
----------
Seems they don't know what happened to it, as this is from UESP too:
"The eruption led to most of the island being covered in ash, leading to a mass exodus to the nearby island of Solstheim." -Infernal City page 213

I have the book(yet to read it) I'll check that page and see what it says. I hope Oberon didn't, hasn't read all of this.
Okay found two mentions of it in the story. -SPOILERISH-
***8220;The ingenium exploded. It hurled Vuhon into Oblivion. Then the ministry crashed into
the city, and Vvardenfell exploded.***8221;It wasn***8223;t enough that the ministry fell; the impact caused the volcano that was the heart
and namesake of Vvardenfell to explode. Ash, lava, and tidal waves had done their work, and
when that was calmed, the Argonians had come, eager to repay what survived of his people
for millennia of abuse and enslavement.Sounds to me like it's gone, and what isn't gone is inhabited by Argonians.

I knew I shouldn't have farted whilst climbing through the blight storms...
I just had a very cool dragon fight that ended with me getting a very neat slo mo kill thingy where I climbed onto the thing's head and drove my sword through it's skull repeatedly. Problem is, I never got the souls from it. Ah well, it was worth it for the animation.

I just stumbled upon Helgen again, it's now inhabited by bandits. Glad it didn't stay empty forever like Kvatch did.

I had the narrowest escape yesterday. Got a bounty hunt to off a dragon, managed to kill it and then immediately start getting wailed on by a mammoth. Killed me a couple of times until I escaped up a hill by the skin of my teeth after sprinting. It came back again after I went back down and looted the dragon. Managed to make it to a witches cottage where after offing the witch and looting her place I finally got away.
Seriously loving the game, so much space to explore and adventure and I never really feel hemmed in by the quests.

Stumbled into a trap where a guy down on his luck tricked me into walking into an ambush set by his bandit buddies. I had the ability to take the six or so of them, but thought that I would transform and go at them for effect. How I love being a big, furry wrecking ball. I'm sure that I'll get the option to cure my lycanthropy eventually, but I don't know if I want to do that. Being a werewolf, unlike being a vampire, doesn't require constant management; more like an 'overdrive' mode that I can turn on in a pinch. Handy stuff.

What have you assassin/Thief characters found to be your one perk perk tree? I'm putting all my focus into the sneak tree right now... but i'm half wondering if I shouldn't have gone archery first to maxmimize damage faster...

I'd say go partially into both at the same time. I found the 25% slowdown in time perk on the archery tree to be quite helpful, but the 15X multiplier to sneak damage is great too.

well I'm putting points into archery and one hand when I can but I'm keeping sneak built up as far as my level will allow.. honestly after you get to about level 6 you have enough perks in sneak already that you can do alot of damage with the bow or daggers as long as your unseen. Now that I've joined teh dark brotherhood I'm pretty much finding my groove.
That said the large boss type fights are much harder then they were when I was a mage.... as a mage you just point and click and the dragon dies before it can touch me. Now his breath is actually a major concern and getting caught without a follower is a serious pain.

Dragons are a real dnager, definitely. That's why Í'll always avoid a fight if possible, unless there's something like a fort nearby to use as cover. If a dragon catches me in the open, I just leg it... really need to get enchanting up and get some elemental protection.
But yeah, I focused on stealth, light armor, one-handed and archery at first. Didn't bother with 'steady hands' for the bow and only went to lvl 2 or 3 on the base perk for stealth (general bonus).
Imho stealth in combat is all about hitting as hard as possible on the first hit. Focus on sneak attacks, alchemy helps by making strong poisons. Sneak attack from my dagger kills pretty much anything in 1 hit, save for Centurions and probably dragons.
I've been branching off though; 2 perks in destruction to cast those runes, few perks in base enchanting, stuff like that. And perked up to glass smithing. All gear improved to legendary now, I feel so fancy. :D
They went way over the top with the sneaking, think I got 3 perks in the base
sneaking atm and I swear I could set up a drumset three feet away from someone
and he'd never notice. In broad daylight.

Depends on the enemy. Just got spotted remarkably easily by some spellcaster, with nearly 100 in Sneak and 3 or 4 in the base perk.

Same here. Truthfully, dragons aren't all that tough. Giants, however. Let's just say that I steer clear.

I took most my sneak tree, all except the last 2. The armor one, damage mods, and the running sneak move. I took the combat roll just for cool looking kills.:D
The biggie is the damage mods. It makes this path so worth it. Though I would throw a few points into the first archery perk, just to ramp damage and keep your bow and ammo as updated as you can afford.
Sneak is king in this game.
Edit: On a somewhat unrelated subject, equipment that adds stats in skills count as level requirements for perks. Keep that in mind, and keep all those nifty rings you find.

I disagree, in all honesty magic is king in this game. I can literally sprint thru caves and kill everything without getting touched once. Stamina has no affect on a mage so sprinting away is fine. As a Sneak character I'm having more fun, yes. But I'm also clearing things slower, I can't sprint around like a jackass one I have to stay hidden, and two if I run around like a jackass I'll have no stamina to fight whatever I run into. Also my mage can one hit giants and fling them into the air. Fact. Lightning Storm, boom Giant sprawls around in ragdoll.
Can't... breath... :har::har:

Oh and the small patch was apparently updated .exe to stop people from bypassing Steam when playing.
(it was possible to start the game via TESV.exe without Steam starting)

Damn mages and your cheap parlour tricks. The true test of a man lies in the strength of his arm and his skill with a blade. I know when I finally meet my match in battle, it will be with the blade, the breeze blowing through my hair with my last thoughts of home as I make the journey to Sovngarde.
Yeah, I think I might be taking my role as a Nord Warrior a bit too seriously :O:

Breeze through your hair? Pah, my deadric helm prevents that. :O:
Only thing that gives my warrior a hard time is mages. :haha: Only time I have to use health items to keep from dying.

I will not and cannot disagree.
But magic has been overpowered since morrowind. It is a by-product of the customization system that makes this magic system unique.
I tend to not use any magic unless it would be realistic for the character type to use. Even then I avoid any showstoppers. I avoid pure mage types, unless i am bored .
Just my personal house rules I guess.
I still run from giants.:D
