This thread has been begging for a story. I hope you enjoy it while waiting for your game to arrive.

Extreme Angle

The boat had spent some time at a Florida port, probably Port Everglades. Before leaving, we had taken on some important guests. If memory serves, they were Norwegian Navy officers. We were taking them on a short “demonstration” trip to strut our stuff and show them what the U.S. navy was made of.

After the maneuvering watch was secured, I had the 12 to 18 which meant I would have twelve hours off between 1730 and 0530 – an ideal daily schedule almost like shore life. This only happens one day in three while underway, and it allows one to enjoy an almost “normal” night’s sleep free from the prospect of drills or field days. Usually, that is.

An hour or so after dinner, I was in my rack reading a Stephen King novel. I usually had trouble sleeping when the boat was surfaced but not because of the motion from the waves. It was the sounds of the lapping water rushing over the hull that intrigued me so. It was so peaceful and calming, that I didn’t want to miss hearing it. The sea that afternoon was very calm, which added to the tranquility, and as I lay in my rack, I could feel the gentle sway and hear the slight creaking of some metal on metal somewhere within the ship.

The 1MC bellowed, “Dive! Dive! Dive!” as the Klaxon horn sounded. Usually we all looked forward to the dive in order to escape the rough rolling seas. This time however, I actually wanted to stay on the surface. I was getting sleepy and was ready to succumb to darkness when the sound of the diving alarm quickly snatched that away. There is always high tension at the onset of a submarine’s dive. There are just too many things that can go wrong to be comfortable with it.

The sound of the air escaping from the ballast tanks was loud, and as normal, the boat continued running on the surface. Then slowly, the bow began angling down as the ship started it’s decent towards the depths. From the inside, it’s almost imperceptible at first as the “angle” during an initial dive from the surface is very conservative. Submerging dives are made very carefully.

From outside the boat, an observer would have been able to see streams of water shooting upwards from both ends of the boat as the ballast tank vents opened and allowed the air in the ballast tanks to escape. The forward vents are opened a couple of seconds before the after vents, so the forward tanks fill slightly sooner than the aft tanks. This helps the boat achieve the down angle needed to descend into the depths. If an observer had been watching that day however, he may have noticed that there was not as much air gushing out of the aft tanks as there should have been.

Lying in my rack, I felt the boat pick up the normal slight “down” angle as we submerged. I subconsciously expected it to stay that way. During my very first dive, I was sort of disappointed about how little you see and hear. It’s less dramatic than, say, taking off in an airplane. You feel the deck tilt a little. And if there is any swaying from the waves, it stops. That’s about it.

This time was different. The slight down angle began growing steeper.

688 class boats are designed to be “tilted” up or down by as much as 45 degrees. These are called, appropriately enough, “steep angles” and they are rarely done in peacetime. A normal or typical up or down angle, when the boat is fully submerged, is more like 20 or 30 degrees. Down angles when submerging are probably no more than 10 to 15 degrees.

Even laying in my rack, I could feel the down angle increasing. Soon it was about 30 degrees, about the maximum considered normal. Since my feet were pointing forwards, this meant I could feel a bit of pressure on the bottoms of my soles as they began to press against the bulkhead at the “foot” of my rack. I was partially “standing up”. My first thought was, “Those show offs! The XO is trying to impress the Norwegians with some sort of steep dive.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The angle grew steeper.

Soon it was at 45 degrees, the most I had ever felt. This may not sound like much of an angle, but it means that it’s just as easy to walk down the bulkheads, as it is to walk down the decks. Mobility is in fact impossible. All you can do is hang on. The crew needs to prepare the ship before such steep angles, or it can be dangerous from falling objects.

I heard the expected outcries of surprise, liberally sprinkled with profanities. Shoes and sneakers tumbled across the deck, and I heard loud crashes from the galley.

The angle grew steeper. Now, the bulkheads were more horizontal than the decks. I wasn’t just anxious about the dive anymore, I was down right scared. I knew something was wrong as I was basically “standing” on the foot of my rack. I was almost paralyzed with fear wondering what the hell was going on. There was nothing that I could do other than to trust my shipmates in the control room. At that point I think I shouted, “Blow damn it blow!”

The angle continued to grow even steeper, maybe to about 60 degrees. I kept thinking to myself, “C’mon guys, this aint right. Blow the f'n tanks or we’re going to loose the ship!”
At that exact moment, I heard the distinctive roar of the Emergency Ballast Tank Blow system being activated.

I wave of relief came over me almost instantly. “Whew that was close. The chief of the watch messed up his trim tank calculations. Stupid idiot!” We should be ok now. The angle should start decreasing and we will head back to the surface and recalculate the tank levels. The high-pressure air having pushed the water out should be bringing us back to the surface.

Except that it did not.

The angle grew even steeper still. Right through to 70 degrees. For all practical purposes, we were vertical. The sound of the EMBTB system air was heard again and again. I knew from previous experience that when the EBTB system was used, it WORKED; it took just a few seconds of air to bring the boat to the surface.

It wasn’t happening. The ship was not responding.

I heard a very weak voice come from the 1MC: “Loss of depth control.”

The wave of anxiety rushed through me, but when I heard this, I knew my time had come and I accepted that.

Amazingly, I could still think straight and panic wasn’t even a shadow of a thought. I wondered if the air was just escaping right out of the ballast tanks grates, without having any effect since we were almost vertical. I believed that we would die within a few seconds. Crush depth for a 688 class is not all that deep. I heard the hull flexing and popping as we descended deeper and deeper.

The mind begins to work in funny ways under these conditions, I guess. An incredible emotion swept over me. I guess you expect me to say that I felt peaceful, almost relieved. That’s not how I felt. The feeling was one of intense despair and sadness. It was an almost indescribably dark and miserable feeling, everything negative that you can think of, all rolled together: anger, disappointment, sorrow and terror. It was beyond a doubt the worst feeling that I have ever had.

I wondered how cold it would feel for the brief second that I would still be alive when the water rushed in to seal our fate. Suddenly, I wanted it to be over. I could only hope that it would be quick. The hull continued to make popping sounds under the immense pressure of the depths. When it finally gave way, I wondered, would there be any sensation at all? Would I feel like an ant being crushed under a steamroller? Would there be an avalanche of intense, infinite pain just before the abyss of death? Or would my mind just “snap off” like a light, with no final sensation at all? That’s what I was hoping for. I was afraid that somehow I would survive the implosion for a while causing me to feel the sea water being forced down my nose and throat, filling my lungs to capacity and drowning me like a bilge rat.

So what will it feel like to die, I wondered? I honestly believed that I was about to find out. As I waited, I felt the boat begin a slight shudder.

Gradually, the angle began growing less severe. Soon we were at 60 degrees, 45, 30, then horizontal. I don’t remember being “relieved” at all – I was too emotionally exhausted to feel a thing. I just spewed four letter words with my shipmates, and that took off some of the edge. A time-tested sailor’s trick.

On the surface again, we took it for granted that we would NOT try the dive again until we knew exactly what went wrong – and it was fixed. Just minutes after we had re-surfaced, word spread that the Executive Officer, wanted to try the dive again immediately. Even before the EBTB tanks were re-charged with high-pressure air. Fortunately, the captain had more sense. He made an announcement to the effect, “The ship will not, I repeat NOT, attempt another dive until the problem is found and rectified and the HP air tanks have been re-charged.” Now the wave of relief finally came.

I think there could have been a genuine mutiny that night.

Apparently, one or more of the after ballast tank vent valves had stuck shut. Because air couldn't escape from one or more of the aft tanks, there was a large bubble of air back there, holding up our back end as the front end submerged deeper and deeper.

What saved us? I don’t know. I suspect that the extreme depth made the bubble in the aft tank smaller (air is compressible, of course) and that decreased its effect, enabling us to regain control of the boat.

I have no idea how deep we went. No one really knows how steep the angle was as all the bubble indicators were maxed out. Scuttlebutt says that the Sperry gyroscope in the torpedo room trips at 75 degrees, and it tripped. The reactor too is supposed to automatically shut itself down at an extreme angle. I was told that something went wrong with the sensor, and that’s why it remained running. If it had shut down, it would have been the end for sure since we were using "Emergency Back Full" reverse to help slow the descent into the depths. Without the propeller spinning to help hold us back, we would have shot like a torpedo to the ocean’s floor. Divine intervention? I would like to think so. On this day, we all walked away lucky to be alive.

humm i must have just come back from a secret mission, went to check my log and got told "no patrols"
gits :(

well to keep it simple. i ran out at night for my second patrol. into a convoy entering the harbour, got sank by a destroyer.
ok so i didnt think the japs would be sailing into my harbour :)

that didnt happen in the north sea.

oh my god. that has got to be the most terrifying things i've heard in a LONG LONG time.

divine intervention...well i dont believe in god, but...yeah, it was divine intervention.

when i got to the point where you realized the boat was at about 75 degrees...i about lost my lunch.

good story.

i had an interesting mission after turning my nose up at the auto incomplete merchant hunt i spent a good 6 hours on a search pattern wich left me with a medium modern split to my name for some 30 shells and one torpedo. 3270 tons the better i left the area and headed west.
finally i bumped into a worthwhile seeming target. couldnt identify anything other than they were military but i sped towards the contacts to have a little nose around. id spent 45% of my fuel in the meantime and only encountered that one ship since leaving my base :) so was looking forward to some excitement.

and i got it in droves. 9 destroyers 2 light cruisers, 2 heavy cruisers, 1 tanker and 2 Kongos.

i used up all my torpedos and fuel in the process ( engage, sneak out, surface and shadow, rince and repeat * 3 )

but i claimed, 2 Kongos 64k and one Maya 9850 and 2 furutaka's 7100/6652.
those last 2 light cruisers lucked out, because in both instances i was aiming at the surviving Maya :rotfl:and they sailed right in i guess, i was busy diving and never got to see either, im sure the event cam doesnt always want to work :), but its nice to be playing without externals.

i called it a day at that, wasnt going to do much with 1 remaining torp.
bit of a turkey shoot in early "41. one of those Kongos took 6 torps, i had to sit tight and wait for ages before i could get the thing sent to the bottom. the Maya on the other hand took 3 and rolled over soon after.

Unlucky!

I was out of torps off the coast of japan , 1st mission. Along comes this Freighter 5,000+tn I'm on the Bridge and deck gun crew fired off there 1st shell, it hit her midships, 2nd shell hits her deck BOOOOM! the whole thing went up in a massive fireball. 2 shells and she was down. 2shells , it would have taken at least 4 torps to put a 5,000+tn freighter down.

Though that said my 20+ torps on my USS Gar only sent 4 ships to the bottom, my gun took out a total of 4 freighters and 4 fishing boats. My AA Gunner bagged 2 aircraft, 1 Zero and 1 Betty.

36,500tn

Can anyone tell me if they get a Patrol report in there log book back at PH, I completed my patrol, I left PH 10th Dec 1941 and arrived on station off the coast of Japan (star with binoculars) 27th Dec. It wasn't until the 11th of Jan 42 that the star change colour and my patrol was completed. I made my way back to PH and when I got there, I got a Campaign Star, I got another CS to give to a member of my crew along with 3 Service Medals.

Now score was up on the chalk board next to the Mission Map, but when I looked in my Log on my desk, it said No Patrol???

The length of that patrol feels more "real" to me then the "24 hours" in Silent Hunter 3. Probably because I am American, and that is how the US Navy seems to operate. That is, they put ships "on station" in certain areas. Give them orders in that area of operations, and recall them after a bit. Seems that is what the game is doing, which I applaud.

As for the patrol book bug, I have seen it mentioned before, haven't completed a patrol yet, so haven't had it happen to me. Perhaps it is a similar bug that was in Silent Hunter 3, where if you upgrade your ship before a patrol, you get no credit for sinking ships?

I just got done with my first patrol. It took me awhile to get used to the controls/commands as its been a few years since I played a subsim. Went out in mid June of '42 heading for Empire waters. Never got that far before I ran into a convoy and expended all my torpedoes. I must admit I am a loosy shot at the moment. But I did bag 3 Mutsuki class DD's and damaged 3 large merchants. Damn merchants had deck guns and would not sink so I gave up and went home. :)

Unruhly, that story was stunning.

P.S. I suppose what saved you was that as the ship neared vertical, the air trapped in the aft ballast tank was allowed to escape out the bottom vent. This equalized the boyancy of both ends of the ship allowing the dive planes enough authority to right her.

In the training mission I put two torps in the stern of a Nippon Maru at ~600 yards then dove to 155 feet at 1/3 speed with 8 degrees of rudder angle. The Maru sunk to a near vertical angle with about 20-30 feet of bow above water (the damage model seems to be flooding by compartment, it bobbed in that position for hours but counted as sunk). I switched to external cam and saw that I might hit the masts of the ship. Holding my breath I waited for my sub to pass. As it did it barely scraped the tip of one of the masts, which caused no damage but produced a positively scary sound. Very cool. The game knew I came into contact with it but also knew it wasn't angled correctly to damage my boat.

My first mission out of Manilla. December 10th 1941. USS Seadragon.

My orders are to carry a group of special forces from Manilla, to the other side of the mainland. "Strange," I thought to myself...."Why don't they just take a land vehicle?" We found out after just a few short hours of traveling up the coast. Radio messages starting flying in about a Japanese invasion of the Philippines. "Sir, multiple Radar contacts!" I thought to myself...This is it. This could be an invasion task force.

Sure enough...A screen of about 8 cruisers and destroyers was escorting 6 troop transports from the Chinese mainland to partake the invasion of the Philippines. DAMN...Only 4 fish up front on this pig...It'l have to do. I lay into those troop transports with all 4 fish...
Nothing but fire and twisting bulkheads.
I know those escorts will be on top of me in just seconds. I turn 180 and loose 4 more fish. HITS. Thousands of Jap soldiers hit the seabed before they can fire a single shot. Diving deep, we slip away from the chaos of the frantic searching and depth charging....

The lieutenant leading the special forces is getting restless...Better drop him off soon and return to the fight....

I just finished my first complete patrol in SH4. In defense of the Philipines, USS Sculpin, was ordered to patrol the Celebes Sea (oddly enough, the same area where my grandfather was shot down and beheaded in 1944.) After a week without contacts, I moved farther south and into a terrible storm. Just as we were about to submerge, I noticed some lights through the storm. At about the same time an Akizuki came out of the mist aft of us. A snapshot blew her in half, and she promptly rolled over and sank. Thinking that I had encountered a convoy, we charged ahead at flank looking for merchants. Instead we ended up with 72,50o tons of warships, 1 Hiryu class fleet carrier, 1 Shokaku class fleet carrier, 2 Mogami class heavy cruisers, and 2 DD's. Not bad for a first patrol. (On a side note I will have to hand it to Ubi. The graphics are fantastic, and I for one am really enjoying this one despite the problems. I will still keep SH III on the drive, but I will be playing Wolves of the Pacific more.)

You know, I've noticed how these shots are beautiful and like looking at paintings.

The game looks "painting-like" as well. I know its the developer's style to make things look like they did in color WWII film and 90% love it... it's just that for me it looks weird. It's a little TOO much like WWII film you know? Maybe after a few patches it will look a little more stabilized. Just my two cents.

I must admit that this is the most uniquely colored and presented naval game I have ever seen.

i have yet to come across a naval battle. i sat in the loaction of the midway single battle in my campaign and nobody showed up. i made it to the invasion of borneo too but only found some ridiculous waves in about 100 feet of water and a task force that wasnt travelling. the waves were so big at periscope depth id go from not being able to see a thing to having my bow exposed. took out three takao cruisers tho

Not much of a storyteller myself but I'll give it a try :D

So after my 3rd trip out I got offered a new sub. I accepted commanding my new home, the USS Drum. It was a upgrade to a Gato. My mission seemed to be stuck on repeat as for many others. I was to ship an agent somewhere north in China or close to China at least.

Before this trip I haven't really been getting much action. Just done my mission and maybe taken out some randoms in enemy harbors. Maybe taken out a few things on the way there and back.

This time I get to my destination as the other times. I toss the poor guy off the sub, and as always his little raft rubs against my sub which makes the sound of a battleship trying to get inside. I pull out as the sun set. Just before the sun is gone I get a report of a convoy pretty close. I rarely manage to get to these in time. I rush south to intercept. Slow down to 2/3 and go to periscope depth. I head straight towards them but make sure I approach my targets at least in an angle. I go through the convoy smoothly taking out 2 x Small, 1 x Medium and 1 Large freighter. I add a Mutsuki Destroyer to the list as I head for home.

...now what, another convoy is heading straight for me before the last destroyer hits the bottom of the ocean. It's perfect..just the way I'm heading to get back home. I know I won't have enough torpedos left for much but I can't just let this chance go without trying. I go straight in like the last time. I start going after the large freighters. This time I end up with 1 x Small, 1 Medium and 2 x Large freighters. The medium freighter was the last one and didn't go down so easily. Thought I'd finish it with my deck gun after the destroyers left. After they were some good distance I surfaced only to see they speed up and came right for me. I went down to periscope depth again. I was only 50 meters or so from the heavily damaged freighter at this time. Figured they would go away again...but oh was I wrong. They kept circling me throwing out depth charges all over the place, but seeing I was so close to their freighter they couldn't hit me. At this point I was out of torpedos and they wouldn't do anything else then that. I had to try to run for it...and I did...without going deeper. Of course they came after me but it didn't end the way any of us thought. Both of them died from running me over. I didn't get any damage... Apperantly the sub is razorsharp..maybe even coated with explosives because it makes things explode for no reason.

After that my crew finally got some rest and looking forward to getting home for some new shiny medals. USS Drum will soon be back on new adventures. Lets just hope I don't get the same d**n mission. :damn:

Got a "new" Gato, only difference I see is that I was allowed to buy new and improved radars. Got both types now, is the crew bigger, my last gato was filled in all positions when I got the new one, I had to add 5 crew to fill her up. My 2 deck gunner spaces were empty and I had to put 3 in the engine room, I had to add a total of 5 new crew to fill her up. I never lost any crew to action or illness that I seen?

Medals, looking different from SH3 medals given out on total tonnage, SH4 patrol tonnage it would seem. I bagged 4 for about 20,000 and then another 3 for about 38,000. The last 3 being 2 9,000tn Passenger Carriers and a Huge Liner about 19,000tn ( the one on the 1st page of the merchant ship-rec-manual)

I had from my other patrols a Campaign Star , a Purple Heart and a Valour Medal. I got another Valour Medal from my last patrol making a total of ..

1 Campaign Star
1 Purple Heart
2 Valour Medals

I have sunk just about a total of 180,000tns in 4 partols. So I take it unlike SH3 where the total tonnage would get me higher ranking medals, SH4 just works on medal from each mission, not total ?

Do we ever get involved in the action , at the end of 1 misson the map comes up and is slowly turning red and I am told there is a Japanese Task Forse heading for Midway and I along with other commanders have to sink what we can of these ships and it draw a lines about Midway where we are to patrol. I click the mission map and get sent to Japan to drop off a spy. At the end of that one my last mission, I get the same map appearing and the voice over saying the Japanese are heading towards Australia and we need to take them on at Guadalcanal. And I and others have to form a ring round the area and take on the Japanese in support of other US forces. I hit the mission map and I get sent to Japan to take photos.

Why not the missions from the cut scenes ..?

1943 in the USS Lapon outa Pearl. Objectives were to partol off Honshu and sink merchants. I made it to the partol area safe and souns when my lookouts spot a large old passenger liner. 3 fish later she was visiting Davey Jones locker as she was blown in half. Evading aircraft like crazy by now, when lookouts spotted a warship to the North.........Coming along big, fat and happy was a Shokaku class CV. Ye'Gads a Flattop!!!!! Dive to periscope depth.. holy cow she's alone, no escorts? :hmm: Dang what kinda luck is that? Set my course to come within 1500 yrds and go to 1/3 speed. She's coming in slow 9 kts. Fired tubes 1-5 at a range of 1000 yds (saving #6 just in case she evades.) A few seconds later 5 solid hits, planes exploding off the fkight deck........huge explosion amidships.......flight deck awash within 30 seconds and down she goes. Set course to the north to find some more merchants to complete the goals. Found an old tanker, a large freighter. Tough buggers to sink, 3 fish each and then the deck gun. Found a few more merchants and finally got the goals complete, headed back to Pearl. Total for the patrol - 6 merchants and 1 nice big CV, tonnage = 47,000.

So far the S-Boat is a Fine vessal to fight with. The deck gun has better hitting power than the deck gun on the U-boats. Also she has fairly good speed and manoeuvrability... maybe not the best... but enough to get the job done. About the biggest drawback so far... would be the lacking of stern torpedo's.

But then... I enjoy the cr*p planes in IL-2 the Best. Give me a Hurricane or Mig-1 anyday!

Ahoy Mates,

I've been lurking and patrolling these waters undetected since I first launched my VII on the Atlantic brine. Now that the powers that be have turned me loose in the Pacific, I thought I'd launch my first fish into these waters.

It's 1941 and I've been given command of a nice new Gar class sub and re assigned to Pearl Harbour. I was very impressed with the efficiency of this fine navy I am proud to serve with. Only 2 days since the devastating attack and this place is as clean and operational as ever. Way to go boys! You are a credit to your country.

I would have liked to stayed in port and looked around more, but alas, my orders came quickly. Patrol and engage merchant shipping in the Marshall Islands. "All right crew, cast off! Ahead 2/3rds. Follow plotted course."

Well it's days later and boy not much happening west of the Marshalls. Took a look at the map and there's a nice chain of islands just up north. The Mariachis, Martinis or something like that. Set course!!!

I was off the west coast of Guam and it was very exciting. I'd splashed 5 planes sporting red polka dots. Silly of the Japanese to paint a bulls eye on their craft if you ask me. Unfortunately my flak gunner seemed to be tiring out for when I looked at him, he had a orange hue to him so I sent him off duty. His near sighted replacement couldn't hit a brick wall at 2 feet or even find the trigger most of the time, so when 2 planes came in at once I ordered "CRASH DIVE!" Well as it turns out, it was more like a "Scratch paint in fender bender dive." But we got down relatively unscathed.

A few hours of submerged running and I felt it safe to surface. Not really, but we needed fresh air. I'm gonna have some harsh words for that supply officer who stocked our galley with all those cans of beans!

Running a northern route, I was fortunate to encounter 5 large cargo vessels. Both Old Split and Modern Composite. I would have thought a modern stealth carbon composite ship harder to spot on air search radar???????? Each of these vessels where unescorted and I was able to allow Boomer my deck gunner to handle 4.5 of these. In the end, I fired a single fish at number 5.

After clearing these waters out, we set off on a north western tack on a hunch that a shipping lane was in this area. Little did I realize it was a military shipping lane and I just about rammed 2 enemy destroyers while napping at my post. Passing between them, I decided I was the meat in a death sandwich so I again ordered the highly effective "CRASH DIVE!" I think the destroyer captains must have been napping too for they didn't come at me with the might and aggressiveness I would have thought fitting of the Imperial Japanese Navy.

It was this point, I thought I'd go on the offensive. This was unfortunately my demise for my helmsman confused "Level the boat." with "Pull the plug."

So as I sit here in heaven waiting to be reincarnated as a US Navy submarine commander. I'll just make a mental note, key "A" equals "Pull the plug."

Happy Hunting,
Lost@Sea

AJ!

We've experienced dud torpedos, but I was diving to get away from the destroyers and happened to forget to lower my scope. I don't know my depth but I had a depth charge land on the bow of my sub and didn't go off. It swayed back and forth and finally rolled off! I thought it was so cool, wish I would have taken a screen shot of it. I didn't know where else to post this and wasn't sure if I should start a new topic.

I have been assigned USS Triton (SS-201) out of Pearl Harbor. It is December 9th 1941. After reading the historicals about the SS-201, I became attached to her. She was the first boat to score a kill with her torpedoes and her deck gun in the war. On 19 November, the submarine headed west to conduct a practice war patrol and arrived off Wake Island. On 8 December, she saw columns of smoke rising over the island but assumed that it was caused by construction work being done ashore. She was informed by Radio that Pearl had been attacked. She observed the Japs bombing wake on the 10th of December, and that night when she surfaced to charge batteries, the moon outlined her to a Jap Destroyer and was forced to dive by gunfire. The Triton dived deep and began evasive action. When she came up the Japanese destroyer had slowed astern at about 40m. She fired all four of her rear torpedoes and 58 seconds later, the crew heard a loud explosion - scoring the first sub kill of the war for the US.

Read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Triton_%28SS-201%29

http://usstritonss201.org/img60.jpg

I decided to stick with this boat. I don't like sailing the most famous or the boat with the most kills, I like sailing one that means somthing to me. She scored the most tonnage of any US Sub operating out of pearl and she was presumed sunk on March 15th 1943 with the loss of all hands. I would like to honor my historcal career that I am going to follow to the crew of the Triton. I found a website with the list of men lost, and went through the config files changing the names of the officers and nco's aboard my virtual Triton to that of the men lost to make it more real for me. It's one thing to just say, oh I took some casualties this patrol, but its another when the crew members have real names and faces. Though I could not find a way to alter the mission objectives in the config files to the historical locations where the Triton actualy patroled I decided to go with what it gave me. Below is my patrol report for December 10th - 30th:
------------------------------

Patrol 1 - 10 December 1941 - 30 December 1941

Orders: Deploy and Patrol West of Volcano Islands at approx 32N 135E and interupt merchant traffic.

December 10th - Set out from pearl harbor at 18:00, set course NNW along midway islands and will turn west at about 32N Lat. Will stop at Midway to top off tanks to and from patrol.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/TritonLeavePort.jpg

December 15th - Around 20:00 picked up radar contact moving slow parallel to me. Plotted intercept course, arrived and waited. Small old merchant appeared on horizon and and traveled perpendicular to my heading. Waiting paid off. At about 1500m fired 3 fish, all three hit, sunk. Replotted and Continued on Course.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/FirstTorpKill.jpg

December 18th - After dodging air patrols for the past few days, finnaly arrived in patrol sector. Begin running patrol patterns. All anaysis of convoys and taskforces show that I will not make intercept courses. I find two small fishing boats near the japanese coast. Sneak up to the small slow boats and surface ahead of them and give my gunners some target practice while myself and XO John Eichmann watch. Sunk 2 small fishing boats. Continue on patrol.

December 20th - Late 19th, around 23:00, get convoy message, plot intercept and rush to get in a lead position. I get in position and wait for radar to make contact, reposition so I have perfect 90 degree shooting solution. Submerge and wait. Convoy comes along as predicted. I fire 3 fish each at two Large Modern Composite Freighters and wait for impacts. Timing indictates that one fish aimed at the rear freighter prematurely detonates. Two explosions on freighter at 340 degrees, one frieghter sunk, third fish assumed dud. Two more explosions on frieghter at about 10 degrees, both fish made target and sunk frieghter. Dive deep and silent and slip under convoy. Escorts do not dedtect me. Mission objectives acomplished.

December 21st- Continued one last day of patroling, spent most of it dodging search planes looking for sub that attacked convoy. Fuel level requires that I leave for port, patroling proves uneventful and plot course back to Pearl.

December 22nd- Constant aircraft overhead keep me submerged and slow progress home. Running slow as possible to conserve what little fuel I have so I can make it back to Midway. Manilla would have been nice if the base hadn't been overrun while I was out at sea.

December 25th- Comsubpac wishes me merry christmas, crew and officers have a little celebration.

Late December 29th- Arrive at Pearl just in time for new years celebrations. Moon low in sky greets us as we arrive. Crew morale improved greatly by bottle of wine shared with all for a great first patrol.

Hope everyone enjoyed the read. I encourage you to look up the history behind your boat, some of these boats and men had a great history behind them and make some interesting reads. The USS Triton will leave for her next patrol on Jan 25th.

Nice screens BClaw. A favorite tactic of mine too is to hide under merchants in the convoy. Throws the escorts through a loop!

I fired two torpedoes, one at each freighter under the funnel, both stopped dead in the water I had three destroyers hounding me so I hid under one, they knew where I was but couldn't get to me. One would stay facing me while the other two would run up and down either side of the damaged frieghter, One even rammed the frieghter I think trying to move it off me. I sat there silent till way after it got dark before they gave up and moved off.

If the game is realistic enough, you might just have been lucky; it may have been set to go off much deeper, and it did - after you were well out of range.

Some of these stories are fun to read but a reaccouring theme is the lame actions of escorts. Here is mine?

I jsut dropped off an agent, and was heading out for some merchant destruction when, I recieved a FOX telling me to head for the China Sea. In route, a horrible Typhoon began to bow with 30' swells and my boat was bouncing all over, so I initiated a dive drill. General quarters was sounded and the crew quickly went to work and after a great deal of effort (stupid game), our boat was cruising at 100'. I released the General Quarters and went to 2/3. About 20 minutes later, Sonar indicated it had merchant and warship traffic heading straight for us. Sounding General Quarters Again, Sonar began tracking. At exactly 400yds, we went to periscope depth and between the giants swells, a large passenger liner was at a perfect 90deg. I could not get bearing or accurate yardage so I fired a spread of all 6 fix with 3deg difference left and right of zero (manual is so much fun!) and dove down and went to standard to loop around and get another shot with rear tubes. After tracking for several minutes explosions were heard and then sounds of the ship breaking up. Of my 6 fired, three hit and it was a perfect bow, stern, and mid spread. The ship broke into three pieces and exploded as well sending sailors and passengers flying in all directions. The ship must have been loaded with troops and weapons as the explosions were the largest I had ever seen.

Soon the ship was on its way to the bottom of the ocean floor and Sonar started reporting over 15 "merchants" suddenly. Apparenlty many made it to boats but I would have hated to be in a boat with those waves.

(side note: I turned on external views for this mission and one of the fish that hit the middle of the big ole vessle was riding a wave swell and hit on the gangway. Funny watching the people get blown away):ping:

"Disclaimer: On my last patrol I experienced a weird glitch that wouldn't let me reload torpedoes, but to keep this in character and seeing how it was a rather hilarious incident, I'll consider it to be some kinda mechanical failure.. This is my first attempt at a patrol write up so I hope you'll enjoy it."

We departed from Brisbane, Australia on June 2nd, 1942 in our trusty S-18 class submarine which had seen 6 patrols prior to this, with no seaman harmed and no damage inflicted to her. As we had sunk ~ 120.000 tons worth of ships during those patrols, with a dated S-18 no less, we were very confident in our abilities and in the ship. Our main objective was simple enough - we were to patrol the Solomon Islands and sink any hostile ship we could get a hold of. As we headed north for the Coral Sea, we received Comsubpac news that New Guineea was the target of a main strike of combined air, land and naval forces, forcing the Japanese aggressor to withdraw from the island. That meant our travel through the Coral Sea was much saver a task than it used to be in previous patrols, thanks to the fact that Japanese air cover was not as frequent as it had been (Captain's note: my request to install a Flak gun has yet to be answered by Comsubpac .. I doubt it's going to happen anytime soon).

Sure enough, we arrived at our designated patrol area about 5 days after departing from Brisbane about a day's travel south east of the hostile port of Rabaul, staying submerged for most of the day to avoid aircrafts. The first two days passed by rather unspectacular when the Captain decided to have a trip around the Solomon Islands. Sure enough, after about a day and a half going around the northern part of the island group, we pick up a japanese merchant. This meant hunting season and soon afterwards, the unsuspecting merchant was sunk by two torpedoes, never knowing what had hit her. Our Captain just mentioned that one of the survivors on the lifeboat gave him an internationally known gesture of disapproval when we came close to the few men on their little boat as they noticed the periscope. Our celebration was soon struck by concern as word went out that the Captain wanted to cripple the Solomon Islands' life support by raiding the port of Honiara. We didn't know what to expect there, but we were to find out soon enough ...

We stayed submerged for close to 12 hours only about 3 kms out from the port, and the destroyer patrolling the area never picked us up. This was probably one of the most intense experiences in our life on S-18. Depth under keel didn't give us a whole lot of room for evasive maneuvering upon detection, but we trust our Captain enough to let this kind of judgement be his call. At about 2200 hours local time, we were called to battlestations - we raised the periscope to find that the destroyer was only 800 meters away from us at a near perfect angle. 3 fish later it added to our ever increasing number of tonnage sunk. We went closer to the port and waited for our tubes to be reloaded and found it had no coastal installations. We surfaced 1 km out from the harbor because CO2 levels became critical meanwhile, but this was to be as easy as duck hunting - only two small cannon boats were left to guard the port of Honiara. We dispatched off them as well as taking out a 10000 Ton tanker and a 5600 ton merchant when suddenly, there seemed to be a problem in our torpedo room - all four tubes were jammed. Yes, jammed. How can you possibly reload FOUR torpedoes and forget to retract the stop bolts in all four tubes? I will never forget the Captain's desperate cries to fire the torpedoes to no avail, in fact, it haunts me while I am writing this diary. Great .. the torpedoes were now officially jammed in the tubes with no way to fix this problem in hostile waters. The Captain threw seven shades of fit, and on our way out of Horiana you could hear his swearing in Pearl Harbour. No one dared to tell him to keep the noise down either as swimming back to Brisbane wasn't something any of us fancied doing.

We continued our patrol however, going around the Solomon Islands to go back to our initial patrol area. The fact that we had sunk a total of 3 warships, two merchants and one tanker cooled our Captain off as about a day away from our patrol area at around 0425 hours, we met a small convoy consisting of two tankers and one merchant. With the torpedo tubes jammed, all we could do was approach and attack them with the deck gun. We reported the contact and sure enough, Comsubpac told us to take them out with the priority being the tankers. Using the dark of the night to our advantage, we were able to approach the hostile ships unnoticed before we opened up and the peaceful seas turned into a firey hell. One of the tankers took a few potshots at us so she was the first to draw our attention. Luckily for us, the sailors on the japanese vessel were everything but marksmen so when she blew up, S-18 remained unscratched. It left a bit of a bitter taste however because the big 10000 ton tanker didn't drop any lifeboats .. there were no survivors. They might be the enemy, but they are seamen just like us ... but this is a war, and there is little time to mourn when you think about that you could be the next to die 15000 kms from home, never to be found again.

The 3 ships took a lot of ammo to sink but we managed to do so, however, with our torpedoes jammed and running out of deck ammo, all we could do was to make it back to the patrol area and report contacts. Back in our patrol area, we were given permission to return to Brisbane when on our way back we came across three japanese fishers in their little wooden boats. Our Captain didn't seem too interested but reported them none the less, and much to our surprise we were told to sink them. Putting all second thoughts aside about this complete mismatch, we opened up on them with the remaining shells from our deck gun. Two of the fisherboats instantly caught fire while the biggest tried to make a run for it. Then however, we were completely out of ammo. Ok, I thought, we are going to let that one be and return home, but that was not to be. "Orders are clear", the Captain let us know. "Destroy enemy vessels". So we chased after the remaining boat which was using a pattern of board/starboard maneuvers to get away but our diesel engine had no problem at all to keep up with it. Getting closer, the japanese fisher forced their boat into a starboard turn and our Captain ordered to keep the course .. keep it ... I knew what was up. We were going to ram the little boat .. sure, it was solid metal versus wood, but still .. I felt the adrenaline rushing. "Rudder 30 DEGREES STARBOARD! FLANK SPEED!" I thought the Captain had lost his mind. "RUDDER MIDSHIPS!" Seconds passed, and us down in the belly of S-18, being shaken by the wild chase, didn't know what was going to happen as suddenly, a banging noise and awkward scratching echoed through our submarine. I couldn't believe this .. this was surely not your run of the mill standard procedure. I suppose the Captain was a huge fan of "20000 miles under the sea" by Jules Verne. We would call our Captain "Nemo" from that day on whenever he was not around. It worked. The small fisherboat had tipped over from the impact and sank within seconds. The few crewmen made it out alive and I believe, hoping they made it to safety of course, will tell the story of when their ship was sunk by a US submarine at ramming speed for the rest of their lives.

We arrived back in Brisbane on July 5th without further incidents. A lot of promotions were handed to the crew and we were transferred to a new boat, a Salmon Class submarine. 24 torpedoes instead of 12 .. wow. A lot of tubes to jam too .. our next patrol is set to begin shortly, but not before our Captain is comfortable with his torpedo room crews again. Sadly, S-18 was transferred back to the United States where it serves for training purposes now ... but I will forever remember her and secretly refer to the boat that kept us alive on 7 patrols as "USS Nautilus".
__

Right, I hope you guys enjoyed this read. I sadly forgot to take screenshots (didn't intend to make a write up of it), but this patrol was surely the most fun so far, despite the fact that a bug prevented me from using my remaining 7 torpedoes. I surely had a blast writing this and may consider doing a few more of these.

So there I was, my first mission as almost full realism. No auto-aiming, external views or map contacts.

The beginning of the trip went nicely, I dodged few enemy warpatrols as I didn't want too much attention to mysel on this recon mission. When I got near to tokyo I realized that I have to go through a narrow strait. Ofc I thought that night would be the best time as there wouldn't be any convoys with escorts and their nasty sonars.
So I waited the night to fall and started to head to Tokyo, when I got about 10 clicks away from the strait I dived all the way to..... 37 meters, I was about ˝ or 1 meter above the seafloor and I decided to trust that it won't get anymore shallow than it is already. After inspecting the map few times I noticed that there starts a deeper area of water about 12 clicks away, so I decided to go to standard speed and started active sonar listening.
first 7 clicks we're really easy, few gunboats going from north and south from me, but they we're so far away that I decided not to slow down, after all I was so close to deeper waters and a freeway to Tokyo. Then it happened, slow propeller sound coming from bearing 040, then it moved to 033. I realized soon that it would pass my designated line of entry. I went to periscope depth and raised my periscope, it was really dark and took a while to find the enemy but then I noticed him at about 022, a medium cruiser, I recognized the ship(can't remember it atm >.<) and took the distance and made a shooting solution.
After few minutes of stalking I decided that I would just wait for it to go past me and then continue my way, after all it was still a recon mission. So I waited, and waited, and waited until the ship was at 265 at about 1,2 clicks away and started moving 1/3 silent mode towards my waypoint.
Everything was going nicely and I went back to 37 meters. When I was 4,5 clicks away from the deep end the worst thing happened. First of all, the cruiser that I let go past me was coming after me, really fast. I hadn't noticed that it made an U turn and was about 600-700 meters behind me. Ofc I didn't hear this because of my own propeller noice, only reason why I did notice it was because my "own" propeller noise was getting louder.
If that wasn't enough there was a subchaser at bearing 62 which had sneaked right next to me, about 300 meters away. Well I thought to turn hard starboard and hope they would miss me. Well they sure as hell didn't. Cat and mouse play was ready to start.
I was about 3 clicks away from deeper waters and I decided to try to play dead. Everytime I thought I had lost them they found me again, and again aaaaand again. Finally about 600 meters away from the deeper area I decided to go all or nothing, I waited for the cruiser to drop his depth charges and dodged them barely, my ship got a sidehit and the forward torpedorooms we're filling fast. Well I finally got to the deeper waters and dived so they couldn't be able to find me so easily...
And they didn't, too bad that my repair team couldn't fix the leak soon enough which lead to the fact that I was going deeper, and deeper, and deeper... And there I was, first patrol at "realistic" settings, sunken deep to my watery grave.

(Mods that I used was the flavored to taste which made the enemy radars a lot better. It was really impossible to shake that cruiser on such an shallow water. I even tried to just lay still on the ocean floor but it didn't help)

Photo recon mission turned hairy....

So I tried the photo recon quick mission. Made my approach undetected, maneuvered between a live of CVs and merchants. I photographed them all, then attacked. Torpedoed and sank two merchants and two carriers. Began my egress. While leaving I torpedoed a third merchant.

After leaving the harbor I went to PD and did a check. Didn't see anything, so I surfaced. Too close - there were two DD back towards the bay that saw me and gave chase.

I sank the first one with gun fire while taking minimal damage.

The second one got a lucky hit on my diesels and I slowed to about 12 knots. I was firing the deck gun into her as fast as she would reload, but the DD was going so fast she side-swiped me.

I guess this is a bit too close! I was actually blowing idividual bits off the DD. I watch the crew fall as my shells struck home. Pretty awesome.

She fell away after a bit like this and then blew up. I added to DDs to my tally (2CVs, 3 mechants plus the DDs) and limped out to make repairs.

(I love how the look outs are just staring off into space while the flaming DD slides (and I mean screechingly literally) along the port side.)

We were stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hi and most of the time on daily ops training missions. We were in port at the time for 2 weeks up keep and we got some news from Bu Ships to try and enlongate our service time before having to go into the shipyard for our 18 month updates on equipment as this was to save money. I was a second class Engineman at the time transfered to the Auxilary gang for which we were in charge of the hydraulic systems, scopes, high pressure air systems and refrigeration plus all of the super structure valves.

The chief engineer and I were to inspect the main vent valves, and under the main deck piping that extended from the main induction valve to the engine rooms. The main induction was a huge 3' valve 9' tall with these 3 lines going to the engine rooms. One each in diameter of 22" to each engine room and one 18" line to the forward engine room for the ventilation system. Total weight filled with water would equal 55,000 lbs of water. We had at mid ships a 55,000 lb capacity safety tank just in case this system ever collapsed. This tank was modified to hold fresh water at the time. The valves at the bottom of the tank had been welded shut and the main vent valves disconnected to prevent them from being opened. The old subs had really bad capacity for making fresh water and most of the water that was made had to be used for the batteries as this was almost a daily chore for the electricians to top these batteries off because of charging them all of the time.

So the Chief and I opened all of the deck hatchs to look and crawl into the super structure with a 4 lb. hammer and try and beat the hell out of the pipes to see if any of them collapsed. Needless to say there sure as hell was no room to even get at 30% of them to see what we could do with the hammering and visable inspection. All of the pipes looked to be in good shape, no visable rust or dings or signs of collapsing as these pipes were always full of air. The pipes were 1/4" thick and of course circluar and bracketed in place and very close to the main hull.
So you can see our position of trying to inspect them.

Monday morning we left port for daily ops and motored out to our designated area and submerged. We were suppose to do some shallow running until the ASW teams found us then do some different levels of diving to see if the spotters could pick us up from the plane. They would then drop these 25lb. explosives on us for simulated bombs. Some were close, some missed and of course we were taking manuvering actions to prevent them from finding us. They also had these sona bouys they would drop to pickup our position, these were like a minature sonar with a radio transmission to the plane.

At around 11:30 we dove on down to our test depth of 412'. This subs main hull was only 15/16" thick metal, welded plates and with the interior support beams made of I-beam material, I would say these were 3/8" thick 6x6, not sure about this but close. Also this ship was built in 1944 but did see some action and had a nice battle flag and some shipping sunk and mine laying in harbors. I have no idea what the test depth of those new ships would have been but when I talked to some of the WW2 guys they said they took these ships down to 700' many times for evasion. The ship was 309' 6" long, weight around 1700 tons, widest part was mid ships with 17' inside diameter and with a crew of around 90 people.

I was on the 8 to 12 watch and my duty station was the high pressure air manifold for blowing the ship to surface. I got relieved at 12, went and had my lunch then went to the forward torpedo room to lay down at around 12:30. The spotters must have had a good bearing on us as they were dropping those mini bombs and getting pretty good contact even at that depth. They had just dropped a pair of them when I heard this God Awful KABOOM. I heard the Captain yell to send up a red flare to the forward torpedo room so I knew something bad had happened. They also ordered rig for collapse so I jumped out and headed for the control room as I had to go thru the forward battery compartment to the control room they had started to dog the passage way hatchs shut. I had just made it to the bulk head door and pushed it open to get into the control room.

As there were orders flying like crazy, ahead flank, full rise on bow and stern planes, blow the bow tank, blow all main ballast. I looked at the guy who had relieved me and he was in a stage of wholly fear and had frozen, he had not opened one damn valve. I looked at the depth gauge and we were passing 550' so I promtly knocked his ass out of the way and started cranking open all of the valves. Normally when blowing the main ballest and bow tanks you only opened the high pressure valves about a 1/2 turn for the 3000 psi to enter the tanks. You can believe me I cranked those damn valves as wide open as I could get them. Couse like I said the safety tank was full of fresh water and that could not be blown. I looked again we were passing 600', no response from blowing then one hellish crack from the hull around the scope area, KAPOW, I thought that was the end of us, also the water depth was 2 miles deep. The radio room was also in the after part of the control room and out run the radioman when this happened. Where was he going I asked him as we were in the same compartment. Anyway I looked again we were passing 650', a few more seconds we were passing 700', looked again and we hit 750' and the ship started shuttering and then we hit about 775' and finally started some up bubble and depth rise. This old boat was groaning and moaning but we were headed up finally. Whew, but not out of danger yet, then the ship started really gaining up rise and quickly passed the 400' mark and we began to breath a sigh of relief. At 200' we secured blowing of the tanks, at 100' we flooded negative tank to help stop the fast uprise, slowed to 1/3 head and we surfaced as normal, I started the low pressure blowing system to stablize the port and starboard tanks and put us on a even keel. We went top side to see what happened, and the deck was ripped open from the collapse of those lines running to the engine rooms about 100' long. Needless to say we ended up in the shipyards for repairs and Bu Ships cancelled any long delays for repairs to other subs.
I can only say this, If I had not went to the control room more than likely I would not be typing this adventure here.

i still haven't figured out the TDC in sh4 so i only scored two lucky hits. I couldn't even figure out how to set zero gyro... Anyway - these gaping holes didn't even cause her to take on the slightest lean. Tough BB.

Btw - is this an unusually large TF? 3 BBs, a selection of cruisers, some merchants, a bunch of DDs. Did I just _happen_ to stumble upon the pride of the Nipponese fleet?

Speaking Midway, someone took a look at the code as theres a bug in there. Apparently a lot of the Japanese taskforces sail for Midway in January and not June, get near and then sail back to Japan and disappear.

i was the one who found that out. posting it in bug section now

yamamoto and nagumo were there and to japan in jan. kondo tanaka and kurita got there like the 5th of june but the us fleets got there late the 6th so it looks like there wouldnt be any fighting. i changed the start date in the campaign.cfg for midway from 1938 to june 42 and moved somewaypoints cause thats all i know how to do. i just have to get to june 42 in my career to see if it worked which is getting ahrder and harder to do (if it doesnt work like that someoen let me know eh?)

My worthless entry, a couple of kills I got shortly after sunrise in the East China Sea:

Looking at this picture I tried to imagine myself as a crewman from the foreground freighter adrift in the water, and I composed my final haiku:

"At sunrise, the waves
lap in gentle harmony.
My soul will know peace."

Not a bad screenshot, but the haiku sucks.

Hi!
Indeed I´m surprised how SH4 looks much better in the screenies than ingame...surely due to image resize...
Well, these tow form my 1st patrol: photograph enemy assets in Hiroshima harbour.
I took those shots while sailing out of Hiroshima area at dawn. I just found an escort carrier and two destroyers seating still in the middle of the channel and could sink them quite easily. Even when the carrier went down, the two destroyers didn´t move!...I just love this sim, and will even more when patch 1.2 comes out and fixes some of the most annoying bugs...

Scratch one Flattop!

2 Weeks out of Java in the USS S-34, 3rd War Patrol, 1942.

We'd heard in late January that the Japanese we're massing around the Solomon Islands on their way to Australia, After afew days of little action in our Patrol Grid I decided to go have a look to see what all the fuss was about.

There's not much else to tell after that, up until the 15th of Febuary that is...

We were steaming at full speed between the Palau group and New Guineea in the early hours of the 15th, heading towards the Solomons, there'd been a lot of Japanese Air activity during the day so we wanted to get the hell out of Dodge, ASAP...

"Ship's spotted, Medium Range!"

Petty Officer Hogan was pointing at the Horizon, mouth wide open as if it was his first contact on his first Patrol. I had a look and that's when I realised what the commotion was...

Two Genuine Imperial Japanese Navy Fleet Carriers, dead ahead!

"Send an Emergency Message back to HQ! Two Jap' Carriers, full Escort, heading South West!"

I had to tell someone about what we'd seen, we couldn't let a Japanese Carrier group slip through the net, not this close to Australia...

The reply was quick, maybe too quick...

X GOOD FIND. X DO NOT ENGAGE. LEAVE AREA AND RETURN TO BASE. X

Return to base? Two weeks without any action and here I am with a main enemy Carrier group off my Port Bow and they want me to return to Base! Those are the kind of orders that were losing this war for us, and we'd had it...

"Dive, Dive, Dive! We're going in!"

The Boat slipped beneath the waves, ready to pounce.

"Up Periscope!"

I guided us towards the lead Carrier and got set up for an attack.

"Heading... 352."
"Angle on the Bow... 77."
"Range... 900 Yards."
"Speed... 16 Knots"

We let rip a Salvo of all Four Torpedoes... and then the wait...

...

"Hit!"

I heard that word three times, all well spaced hits along her Starboard side, but the Giant was still speeding along as if nothing had happened!

Then finaly the fourth Torpedo arrived on target, a hit to her aft!

She started to slow, a hit in the Engine compartment? Or maybe the screws!

She was dead in the water! The Silver Bullet!

By this time the Escorts were frantically searching the area for me, they didn't have a clue where I was but I dove deeper, the Carrier wasn't going anywhere and I needed to reload my Torpedoes. It would be risky but I wasn't going to let this one slip... I dove as deep as I thought was possible, and there we waited...

What seemed like a lifetime passed as my crew was just finishing tube four, I took her up to Periscope Depth on her port side to see what was happening, She looked as dead as when I left her, but then... 1 Knot... 2 Knots... all the way to 8 Knots!

"Damn it they've started her up again! They can't get away now! Not after all of this!"

I went to Flank Speed and Spun her around full rudder to Starboard, anything just to get one more shot at that beast!

We were nearly in position when the Carrier's Search light hit our Periscope, we'd been spotted...

All of a sudden every Escort in the group turned towards us guns blazing, but none of that mattered anymore.

This was our last chance, we'd either take her down or die trying, and then...

As suddenly as they'd started the Carrier's Engines failed!

"My God! Now! Fire them all, Now!"

I screamed to my crew as we let go our 3 loaded tubes and dove once more out of sight...

"Hit!"

Too soon... a miss-fire? Or an enemy ship screening the Carrier?

Then afew seconds later...

Two more hits!

We heard a ship groaning as it headed towards the Sea bed, but our Celebrations were cut short by the Depth Charges of the Escorts, now out for revenge.

Afew hours passed of loud, but ineffective Depth Charge attacks before I had the courage to surface again.

It was daylight by then and the sea was calm, for once I decided to follow my orders, leave the area and return to Base!

I'm not sure if the ship we sunk was the Carrier, or if it was a Screening unit...

All I do know is that this is the last time I, and indeed anyone, has seen the IJN Hiryū...

December 14th, 1941

Four days into our patrol of the Luzon Straight, the USS Saury picks up high-speed screws heading right across our path, plotting the intercept tells us that they will pass only 1.5 km away from our bow tubes.

Perfect. The sub sits at periscope depth, skulking, when we spot smoke on the horizon and soon enough, what must have been a surface support group steams into view, 8 destroyers in a wedge formation in front and sides, and forming the center division, two Kongo class battleships and two Takao class heavy cruisers.

Replotting their course, I now found that they would pass away, just out of optimum range at about 2.5 km, so in order to lessen my chances for a dud or prematature explosion, i set a new course....and then my crew kicks the sub into ahead-standard. OH CR*P! all stop! all stop! rig for silent running!

at this point, the three nearest destroyers (apparently not all THAT stupid) kick it into high gear and start pinging me like crazy, as they're closing i line up a shot on the nearest one, open tube 1 and shoot. as soon as tube 1 fires, im lining up shots on the center division, two fish for the Kongo and one for the Takao.

that destroyer cant be more than 800 meters at this point
CRASH DIVE! CRASH DIVE!
as we're sinking rapidly into the black, we hear the first explosion.
then, slightly later as we're leveling off at 60 meters, we hear three more.

i can only say i wish i had taken screenies...cuz you'll never believe any of it.

all my torps hit home. the first destroyer snapped in two and went down in about 30 seconds after impact. the Kongo took two torps aft of the bridge, one of which hit the prop shaft right where it exits the hull tearing a huge freakin hole in engineering, she immediately heeled over to about 20 degrees and went dead in the water, a thick black pall of smoke billowing from her aft gun deck.

i didnt even see the Takao get hit, when i saw the Kongo, i noticed another ship rolling over and heading down, quickly pausing the game for a second i zoomed in and there she was, a huge hole right beneath the bridge.

as i snuck away, the destroyers were trying to DC me to death but i was too deep.

so net total: one of each (DD,CA,BB)

From the Log of USS Shark.

December 25, 1941. USS Shark, Lt. Cmdr. ElAurens commanding.

This morning we sank an Agano class light cruiser with our last two torpedos. This boosted the men's spirits some. Our joy at the sinking was short lived however, as we now know that Manilla has fallen, as has Singapore. The Japs seem to be everywhere, all at once. We are making for Freemantle, Australia, the closest port we have that is safe.

The sea is a lonely place at Christmas time. The men are carrying on with their duties, and are determined to beat the Japs all the way back to Tokyo, but they know, as do I, that this is not the last Christmas we will spend at sea...

Patrol Report: 25 January 1942 – 17 Feburary 1942
USS Triton (SS-201)

Objective: USS Triton is to depart Pearl Harbor on 25 January for 165E 7N, just west of the Marshall Islands, and patrol. Report any enemy contacts.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/Patrol2OBJ.jpg

25 January 1942 – Departed docks in Pearl Harbor at around 0800. Set course SSW to the Marshall Islands. Planned to pass south of the islands and come back north to my patrol sector. Weather looks promising, clear crisp January day. Crew is in high spirits after making it back from first patrol in time for New Years. They seem eager to give it back to the Japs after what happened on the 7th of last month. The island is still pretty shaken up about it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/LeavingPort.jpg

29 January 1942 – Clear weather held until tonight. We are approximately 2/3 of the way to the Marshall Islands. At around 1800 wind and waves began to pick up and we have been bucking some pretty high seas. Despite rough swells, we plan to arrive on time to patrol sector. We run crash dive drills to keep the men on their toes.

1 February 1942 – We arrive at our patrol location west of the Marshal Islands on time. The sea is still pretty rough. No contacts as of yet. Will continue running patrol pattern.

2 February 1942 – At 0100 we picked up a contact bearing 090, closing south towards us. Set new course northwards and rushed to intercept. At 0252, visual contact is made. Watch identifies it as a friendly freighter. I confirm. Disappointedly return south to our patrol sector and send a status report to COMSUBPAC. I am unhappy with patrols productivity.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/SubNightSurface.jpg

3 February 1942 – Patrol orders are completed. After discussion with my officers we decide the best place to hunt for merchant traffic is off the coast of Guam and Siapan, which lies to our west. We radio COMSUBPAC and the give us the green light to commence patrolling off coast of Guam. We set course so slide south of the islands and ring around north once we pass them to patrol the western coasts of Guam.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/MapDebate.jpg

5-6 February 1942 - At around 2334 we get a contact report not far west of Guam, 145E, 14N. We plot intercept course. At 14:01 on the 16th we make visual contact with a ship bearing 347. We dive to periscope depth and begin to observe. We identify it as a medium modern composite freighter. We close distance and continue to observe. At 14:13 we line up a three torpedo salvo. Fire each with 5 degree spread. Two out of the three hit, one explodes prematurely. Target rolls to starboard and sinks.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/Kill1.jpg

We surface and continue north. At 17:13 we get another contact and plot intercept course. We make visual contact at 18:23 and we dive to periscope to avoid being silhouetted by the setting sun. After a few minutes of observation we identify her as a Medium Euro Composite Freighter and line up a firing solution. At 18:39 we fire another 3 torpedo salvo. Two hit, one miss. Ship explodes violently into flames and sinks.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/Kill2.jpg

We then surface and continue patrol. Just as darkness covers the sea we make visual contact with two more coastal freighters going from Siapan to Guam. We identify lead ship as a coastal freighter and rear one as a large old split freighter – which is exceptionally rusty and old looking. From our current position we really don’t have a shot on the lead ship, so we line up a four torpedo spread on the large split freighter. We fire salvo at 2315, three explosions. She sinks and we stay submerged till clear of other ship.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/Sunkourship.jpg

7 February 1942 – At 12:42 we are forced to crash dive by a large Jap search plane, probably from Guam. We continue submerged till nightfall.

8 February 1942 – At 0900 near Siapan, we make visual contact with a small freighter. Initial visual inspection is suspicious. We see large structures on the fore and aft decks which possibly could be deck guns of some sort. We think it might be a Q ship of some sort, so we dive as a precaution and continue to observe. As we draw closer we observe that it is in fact not a Q ship. We line up our last two forward torpedoes and fire at about 800m. One hits and the ship tries to limp away. We surface and finish her off with the deck gun. At around 1200 fuel is running low for return along with torpedoes and provision. We plot course back to pearl. At 1500 search plane forces us under till nightfall.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/BinocKill.jpg

9 February 1942 – Nearing friendly waters. Friendly task forces pass by us on our way back. Haze and fog limits visibility. As a precaution we run underwater most of the day. Once we past 170E Longitude we should be home free.

13-14 February 1942 - Storms North of Marshall islands slowing progress. Continue running under water to avoid bucking heavy seas.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/Storm.jpg

17 February 1942 – 0800 Dock at Pearl Harbor. The crew is again in high spirits. We ran into no escorts and suffered no casualties. We sunk four merchant ships on this patrol bringing our total to 7 enemy merchants sunk.

Wanna hear from a guy that survived a gun duel with a Destroyer?

I was taking the convoy course of the Submarine School first off and without the European uniformed convoy system, it was very hard to predict how the ships will behave and manruver.

As the course began, I ordered a a course of 50 degrees starboard and went on the bridge when I saw an escort destroyer coming towards me full speed at 345 degrees to port. I crash dive and level at 221 ft. Then, I adjust my speed to 0.5 knots while silent running. By this time, I sounded general quartars. I just waited for the trash cans to drop but fortunately, the destroyer passed by without dropping any depth charges.
The convoy finally arrived on the scene and I kinda expect them to move left or right of me. They did the unexpected - they went over me. Without any good position to fire my tubes, I did a combat surface and used my deck gun on a tanker before the destroyers can come. Two of them were off my port side some 10,000 to 9,000 yards busy with depth charing the area and one is on the opposite side of the convoy about 10,000 yards off. Within seven rounds, the destroyer on the opposite was barreling down towards me. With the tanker burning a little, I redirected my crew's fire on the destroyer and scored excellent hits before I crash dived and dived to 207 ft. One trash can managed to damage slightly my decoy launcher and my triple A guns.
Then, with my rotten luck, all of my forward torpedoes miss the destoryer. But, my luck altered for the good. With tube No. #1 reloaded minutes later, I scored a hit on the tanker after manevered perfectly between the tanker and the destroyer (which was coming in range broadside with my stern tubes). Guess what! Scratch one destroyer. The tanker remained afloat and still moving.
While forgeting the other two destroyers, I surface and started to ravage the convoy with my dech gun.. I came nder fire but can't located the source of the incoming fire. I thought it was one of the merchants sporadically firing it's deck gun. I guess I played SH3 too much. Anyway, all of the sudden, my submarine pitched sharpy and violently to port and turned my head to starboard. To my surprise, there it is - a destroyer. I immediately ordered my crew to fire at point-blank range. The destroyer's gunner control was lousy. It did score one hit as I pulled away to port. The result was the destroyer went down burning and I continued to sink ships with my deck gun and with light casualities.

Well, it is my story.

A couple days later she encountered a small convoy of two ships, A Medium Composite, and a European Composite. The Medium Composite was sunk with no problems. The European on the other hand took 4 fish to make her go down. Ship exploded almost in half, we found a few floating crates on the surface and found one of them to be filled with explosive, the others contained panels of glass, cork and sake. The crew had a good night of celebrating afterwards.

August 17 1943.

USS Balao,
South China Sea.

0230: Made sonar contact with a Japanese convoy at bearing 47 degrees Hdg 210 degrees at approx 30 nm. Plotted intercept course but had to run on the surface in order to get into position in time.

At about 0400 I reached my submerge point and did so. If my calculations were correct, the enemy convoy should appear at a bearing of about 45 degrees in a half hour.

At 0405 made sonar contact with convoy but instead of it being off to 45 degrees and two thousand yards it was at 90 degrees and four thousand yards. Im not sure how the deck watch didn't spot the convoy or how the Japanese didn't spot me. But it was too late to move out of the way so I ordered all stop and rigged for silent running as there were four or five escorting destroyers.

A few minutes later I spotted two large tankers, one off the starboard bow and one off the starboard stern. I was in decent position to attack both but I had to be quick. I managed to get three torpedoes off at each ship but now I was being pinged by the lead destroyer. I ordered the sub to dive but going at two knts wasn'g going to get us out of danger quickly. Luckily the destroyer didn't have a very good fix on us.

Moments later torpedo impacts on the rear, and then the front tanker
were reported by the WO and sonar reported the rear tanker breaking apart as she sank. Must have broke her back.

By now, the escort destroyers were converging on me and we took some minor damage from depth charges. The deeper we went the more difficulty the Japanese destroyers had in getting a good fix on us but that didn't stop them from trying. At one moment they would lose all contact with the Balao only to regain it later. For two hours we dodged the enemy destroyers until they finally gave up to rejoin the convoy.

When I felt it was safe, we ascended to periscope depth and off in the distance, the first tanker was sitting dead in the water. And curiously there was a lone Japanese destroyer about 2000 yard directly aft of us. As I caught site of her she was sitting still obviously listening for any indication of us. Moments later the destroyer starting sailing in a tight oval perhaps 500 yards long at about 25 knts and kept looping around over and over again. Hmm what to do. A fish launched at the tanker might get the attention of the destroyer even if I missed such an easy shot. The alternatives were obvious, either break off or sink the destroyer first. Well I went with the destroyer.

It was an impossible shot. I could not track the destroyer long enough to get a decent solution. She was going so fast and changing course too quickly. But I sat and watched for about 1/2 an hour. I concluded that, if I put on enough gyro angle and aim for where the destroyer first turns, the torpedo should hit at the point where the destroyer makes the second turn. Id only get one chance because I had only one after torpedo left.

"Set tube 7 for a depth of seven feet, set the gyro for 12 degrees to the right,..Open tube 7 and launch at my command".
"Aye aye sir". "Aft torpedo room reports tube seven set for 7 feet and gyro of 12 degrees right, tube seven is open...waiting your command sir".
"Very well,....fire tube seven".
"Firing tube seven, . . . torpedo in the water".
"Very well, down scope, all ahead 1/3d, dive the boat, make your depth 350, if it misses she'll be coming after us".
"Aye Aye sir, all ahead 1/3. Dive Dive, set dive planes at 20 degrees and make your depth 350"
AAAOOOOGA AAAAOOOGA.
"Sir sonar reports torpedo running hot straight and normal".
"Very well, what is the destroyer doing?"
"Sir Sonar reports enemy destroyer is still sailing on its previous course". "Very well. Time to impact".
"Sir time to impact is 1 minute ten seconds sir"
tic tic tic tic tic
"Torpedo impact sir!...Sonar report shes sinking like a rock"

That was during my sixth partol and while not the most exciting or hair raising patrol it was certainly interesting in that I have never seen an ecorting destroyer simply sail in circles like that, and it was the hardest shot I've ever made in any sub sim. Near the moment of impact I cheated and went to the camera just to see what the shot looked like. I didn't see it real clear but it appeared that the torpedo swam directly up the stern of the enemy ship as it was beginning its second turn and was descending on the back side of a wave. Near amid ships the torpedo must have impacted the hull or was magnetically detonated and the japanese destroyer went up like a roman candle. Probably just blind luck that I did hit it, but it was fun to try. And to top that, the crew was exhausted by having been at general quarters for about 3 and a half hours. I had to cancel GQ just to get the normal watch crew to wake up.

What fun! And I hope you enjoyed my story.

Winter of 1944.

Marshall Islands.

U.S.S. Skate, Balao-Class.

Mission: Patrol Marshall Islands, Sink Merchant Convoys, Provide Support for Marine Landing.

Departure: January 3, 1944, Pearl Harbor

The dates from this point on are unavailable.

The U.S.S. Skate set out for Marshall Island with a vetted crew of excellent skill and hand-chosen by Jack Russell, acting Commander of the ship.

[One Month Later]
We began our patrol of Marshall Islands to intercept any non-allied ships on approach to the islands. We spent two weeks without any contacts, meanwhile, the Marshall Landing went without a hitch. A decision was made to move further west, outside of Marshall Island's waters.

[One Week Later]
Radar contact, we tracked it eastbound towards Marshall, barring any assumptions, we believed it may have been bound for the islands to resupply their forces when we intercepted. Large Convoy of Tankers escorted by three Destroyers under the cover of dark were spotted. The Skate closed into attack position at periscope depth and launched six torpedoes against two large tanker targets. Four torpedoes struck, two each. One sank immediately, the other's stern was in the water but still upright.

The destroyers were aware of the attack, but had no clue as to the direction as the tankers were at differering angles when the torpedoes detonated. We reloaded and fired another four torpedoes at medium tankers, striking both amidships and breaking them in half. The stern of both ships remained on the surface, screws in the air.

With the mediums dispatched, the Destroyers finally bore down upon us, one from the Skate's stern. Two torpedoes were, as one of my crew stuccinctly put it, right down their d*mned throat. It was an immediate confirmed kill at 1,300 meters.

A second destroyer also bore down at us as we turned to deal with the burning large tanker that remained intact to our stern - we had passed it during our attack on the smaller ships, as well as the offensive-defensive manuever against the rearward destroyer. The additional destroyer once again took two torpedoes head on, one detonating directly underneath the command tower. The tower was blown clean off, while it broke in two.

The third destroyer was of trivial concern as it was using searchlights to attempt to locate us, because the destruction of the ships had generated sufficent noise to render their sonar useless - that, and there were multiple wrecks between us and them. We breached the surface and used the deckgun to finish off the persistent tanker - which was listing to port and awash up to its second stack, blasting a foolish gunner from the deck with a single shell. I don't know what that man was thinking, believing that he could defend a mortally wounded and unrecoverable ship with a dual machine gun, as the shell impacted against his emplacement. The annoyance silenced, we punched two holes in the bow and permanently sank her.

The last destroyer escort was already closing distance, and we expended the remaining torpedoes in a last attempt to wipe the remaining tankers - one medium and two small ships in the distance, while sending a farewell gift to the escort that bore down on us. Our watch crew reveled in the detonation that resulted as all torpedoes on the targets detonated.

We celebrated by having some well-brewed coffee on the way back through Marshall Islands - now under Allied control - bound for Midway for refit.

Final killcount: 2 large tankers, 3 medium tankers, 1 small tanker. 3 destroyers sunk.
Tonnage: 45,000+.

[Two days later.]
We were entering the Marshal waters as we were constantly harassed by submarine-hunting planes. Their aim had been so crude that we did not even need to submerge to evade their bombs. It had become so routine that our crew did not shrug when a pair of Betties came by and lobbed their six-pack bombs at us, missing by over ten to fifty meters.

One fateful morning, we were foolish to think that a Zero would miss. It was a near-direct hit to our stern, as our Anti-Aircraft attempted to shoot it down before the payload was dropped. It detonated near our screws, effectively buckling our hull in the engine room up to the command room. We began to take on water, as the damage control got to work - I think their priorities were a bit mixed.

We managed to repair the bulkheads by the end of the day, and even though the Skate had fully submerged due to the amount of water in the rear quarter...we had sunk to a depth of 255 feet, before managing to blow the ballast in time before we reached hull crush depth. We rose to a reading of 60 feet, although our bow was the only thing out of the water. We began to pump the water out of the astern torpedo room and engineering rooms.

By midday our deck was above water, and we mounted a defensive measure against the three bombers that approached the Skate, which was dead in the water.

Two of the bombers were on a direct track for us, and were promptly shot down before they could offload their bombs. The third managed to drop the bombs, but they exploded well off our bow. That plane, too, was shot down.

Finally, by dusk, we had our engines working to some capacity, and made for Midway with all capable speed through the Marshall Islands' defenses of cruisers and destroyers. It was a shame that a submarine tender wasn't in that flotilla, although we optimized our repairs during the journey and made our arrival to Midway late in the season.

Further repairs were done, and we made for Pearl Harbor before heading to San Francisco for an overhaul.

Amazingly enough, we suffered no casualties throughout our first war patrol. Our egos had been bruised sufficently enough that in hindsight, we were extremely lucky to survive -- and that pilot was very lucky to land such a crippling blow.

We received a naval commendation for sinking the convoy that had been bound for Marshall to resupply the japanese forces holding that area.

I look forward to our next war patrol - our lessons learned from the winter-spring patrol certainly will play a major role when we encounter air forces in the future.

-Signed,
Jack Russell, Captain of the Balao-Class Submarine, U.S.S. Skate

I'm dying to see a large merchantman...."Short Range" from Sonar. Up scope......a fishing boat. "Surface the boat. Engage target with gunfire" Now I'm in trouble! Flashed to the bridge manned the TBT, line on target.....NO guns crew.....I'm shot to pieces by a light machine gun, but I hold on grimly. An inspiration from my Exec. alongside me......"Sir we had doughnuts last night. Lets throw them"
The Exec is on a charge! Finally got the fishing boat to stop firing so went alongside. Exchanged two cans of peaches for fresh fish. Withdrew from area 1000yds, turned and gave him a Mark10.....boom!!!! Moral? Never trust a boats skipper!

Actually, it was one of the trianing missions. I stepped away from the helm (computer) while running at flank speed. The other guy wasn't smart enough to get out of the way. I sat back down and barely had any time to order hard-a-starboard before I rammed him full on. As you can see, it didn't turn out very well for him. He sank before I could check and see if it was PT-109.

I had thought the pics looked more monocrome in earlier shots. I see from these that the pictures are more fakey than the old SH3. I suppose they tried to add crap or make run with vista, something. But the ships look more toy like than in sh3. Inside crew looks cartoon like the lighting is just not right.

I will save my money!!!

Thought I'd post this story here instead of the "Bug" thread as some have had this sinking prob and theirs was buggy.

I was heading east on the surface cruseing at 'standard' speed returning from "Honshu" completly out of torps and ammo when here comes a betty. I immediately ordered crash dive but was to late and Betty gave the Sub a good blow causeing massive flooding in the forward torpedo room, control room and engine room. Of course the Sub was picking up speed to the bottom. I ordered battlestations and the repair crew was allready working on the bulkheads. Then it dawned on me "Hey" your diving at flank speed, this will never work so I ordered "Emergency" and "Blow balast". By now I'm down to about 250' but slowly riseing to the surface in emergency reverse at 5 kts. Meantime I've dragged the "Bulkhead" icon to the top of the repair list ( Y key ) and the water started pumping out of the bulkheads fairly quick. By now most of the flooding was pumped out and then the stern of the sub appeared on the surface, screws spinning in mid air and Sub just hanging there ( First pic ). After about five minutes the stearn and screws settled in the water with the bow up to the sonar antenna on deck still under water.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/oleman/Screwsoutofwaterandreveresed.jpg

By now the repairs had all been done except the forward torpedo room flooding.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/oleman/Fronttorproompumpingwater.jpg

I ordered flank speed and sure enough the bow straightened up and the screws were throwing up a large rooster tail on the surface. OH D#%* here comes Bad Betty again and I don't have any ammo whatsoever and the forward torp room is still flooded, "crash dive !" Here we go again but this time luck was on my side and Betty had missed. No more extra flooding accurred but I had to order another blow balast and also order "Emercency", again the Sub slowed and then started back up to the surface in reverse.
Back on the surface and running at flank ( scared if any slower we'd sink  although that may not have happened but I wasn't taking any chances ) speed looking with the radar for betty ( almost out of her range by now ) the crew were all still on 'Battle stations' and were still in good shape as only the AA flak operator got hit very bad ( 1/100 health ). By now which was about 8 hours later and out of Bettys reach, with only 2,000 nm to Midway and less than a half tank of fuel I deceided to run at 1/3 speed for the rest of the way to Midway and hope there was enough fuel to do so.
Well no more Bettys nor any more bad guys the rest of the way to Midway. refited at Midway, all fueled up, 20 new torps and just a few shells for both th AA and deck gun not full amount of ammo though.

I was watching the rest of the way back for the AA gunner to kind of heal up but no he was still at 1/100 health when we docked at pearl, I had to call the ambulance for him. :rotfl: For HQ sure did not care. :nope:

I must have done something right in that patrol for I got this. ( but why "0" war patrol, heck I'd just returned from one. :hmm: )

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/oleman/Niceforfirstrun.jpg

And a lot of my crew received medals along with a purple heart for my AA gunner ( he's now at base hospital, hope he makes it. )

My point is that with major flooding you can control your ship if you set your people to work ( all of them ) and put the worst task at the top of the repair list ( Y key ) in "Damage management". And on your way to Davey Jones Locker hit the "emergency" reverese and blow balast for it can save your life. :yep:

Oh yes PV, in case your reading this post. You can dive and control your Sub after the bulkheads have repaired but it will take 10/12 hours after the panal shows the bulkheads clear and repaired. I did before the refit at Midway ( and several hours after bulkheads were repaired ) dive to 165' and resurface with no problems. Damn I've a good crew. :smug:

Patrol Report: 13 April 1942 – 25 May 1942
USS Triton (SS-201)

Objective: USS Triton is to depart Pearl Harbor on 13 April for 125E 30N, in the East China Sea and attack merchant shipping in the area.

13 April 1942- After a month of R and R and a handful of weeks training new crew members and sea trials we are ready to head out to sea again. The USS Triton departs on her third war patrol at roughly 0800. The crew is eager to get back to the fight and I can see that they are defiantly refreshed from their month off in Hawaii. The relief crew did a good job repairing and replacing damaged and old machinery whilst in port. The Triton is ready for war.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/LeavingPort-1.jpg

18 April 1942- Storms pick up about a day out of pearl. Seas get rough and a haze/fog reduces visibility to nil as we head to Midway to top off our tank.

22 April 1942- Visibility returns. Seas are still a little rough and clouds hand low. Hot weather takes its toll on the watch crew. Continue heading west towards East China Sea.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/Sunsetclouds.jpg

23 April 1942 – Contact made with an enemy convoy. We rush ahead of their position whilst keeping COMSUBPAC informed to their position. Once ahead we close position. We make visual contact at about 1445. We dive but the seas are so rough we have to struggle with broaching and visibility through our periscope. We still manage to keep a fix on two heavy freighters towards the front of the convoy. After struggling with maintaining a visual, we line up 2 salvos of three torpedoes at each lead freighter. Our position is such that if we miss there is a chance that the torpedoes may hit overlapping targets. We fire spread and dive deep under the convoy. At 1535 sonar detects a torpedo detonation. As we try to determine which torpedoes are duds and which missed, sonar hears secondary explosions and bulk heads collapsing on the merchant sound contact. We gently slide up to Periscope to see burning oil on the surface of the convoy. Must have hit the large freighter and it succumbed to its wounds. We dive deep and clear the area.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/Submerged.jpg

26 April 1942- Another contact with a convoy bearing 270 heading straight towards us. We work out a search pattern and lay in wait for the approaching convoy at around 2240. Unlike our last attack, the seas have calmed somewhat, and this convoy has more escorts. We carefully try to identify the ships in the fading light and set up a three tube salvo on one of the closest lead freighters – a small old split superstructure freighter. We run the math on the second salvo to be fired at the large freighter just behind it. At 23:00 we fire the first salvo at the medium split and prepare to fire tubes 2, 4, and 6 at the large freighter behind it. As the third fish leaves the tube, Sonar man Eddie Dempsey reports that one fish is turning way off course while I’m scanning to convoy with my periscope. After a few seconds he determines the torpedo is running a circular course and coming around our starboard side. To compound the matters, I can see the steam whistles blowing on the freighters and the signal lamps on the DD’s blinking. The nearest DD has alter course right for us and the lead DD is turning hard to port to come at us. I order a crash dive and rig for depth charge. Sonar tracks the foul torpedo as it passes about 100 yards to our stern about 50 feet above us. I settle us down at 200 feet and turn hard to port to move away from the convoy. DD’s screw passes over head with a zum-zum, zum-zum noise. First depth charges drop on us are distant. The DD that passes over us drops a few charges that rattle the boat. A locker falls open and its contents spill out in the crew’s quarters. Crew reports only minimal damage - a few leaks and pipes that need to be retightened. While we are being depth charged two torpedoes explode, sinking a large freighter. As we shift away the DD’s grow distant to our stern. I am still near the convoy. I come up to periscope depth and fire all my rear tubes at the convoy. I watch as first we hit a small composite freighter and are forced to dive by the DD’s that return. We return to 250 feet and clear the area while DD’s try to bracket us.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/NightFire.jpg

27 April 1942- Slip through island chain south of Japan. Now in East China Sea. At 23:00 we spot two fishing sampans along the shore of an island, heading towards mainland Japan. I sound Battle Stations surface and we surprise the coastal fishing boats. Not knowing if they are pickets or just fishing boats, we light up the two wooden ships with 20mm AA gun fire and our deck gun. Within a few minutes they both sink.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/SubMoon.jpg

1 May 1942- We come across a medium size convoy, but we are in a bad position. We rush to make intercept and work out a firing solution. We make visual contact early morning at 0350 thanks to full moon. While we set up the forward tubes, a DD spots our periscope – Probably due to the moonlight and the calm seas. The DD rushes us and we have to crash dive. Again we endure depth charges. Main pumps loose pressure and damage control party moves to fix. I take her town to 275 feet, 25 feet below our test depth and move forward at a slow rpm at around two knots. We clear the area; our only reward is survival to fight again.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/DepthCharge.jpg

3 May 1942- Aircraft begin patrolling over our area; they know we are in this sector. We remain submerged during daylight. No contacts.

6 May 1942- While recharging batteries we spot a small coastal freighter making its way south. We surprise it and sink it with surface fire. Crew is elated to be on surface physically shooting the Japanese rather than waiting and listening in the boat.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/BinocExplosion.jpg

7 May 1942- Fuel is running low so plot return course. Staying submerged during day and traveling slowly at night to conserve fuel.

10 May 1942- Large two engine coastal plane spots our sub traveling at night on the surface. We crash dive narrowly avoiding two bombs that fall off to our starboard side. We zig-zag to throw off search planes that patrol the area.

11-15 May 1942- Air patrols slow progress back to Midway Islands. Usual amounts of warship activity. Maybe they are massing for something…

20 May 1942- Refit at Midway from the submarine tender Sperry. Once ready we set out for Pearl Harbor at sunset.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/JustaGuy778/Random/SailAway.jpg

25 May 1942- We dock at Pearl, Pier 3 at about 12:00. Admiral Lockwood greets the Triton as she pulls in. We learned a vital lesson on this patrol- Avoid attacking in rough seas. I discuss with Admiral Lockwood about my displacement with Mk14 Torpedoes and their horrible failure rate. Hopefully this problem will be remedied.

An Idea here folks...

You know what would be cool... a mod that posts:
Boat name, Patrol #, Date (maybe time), Lat - Long, geo reference and a short note into the Ship's Log when taking a screen shot ctrl+F11. Or at best a caption box one could type in. Would make reading those Patrol Log memorable moments, alot more fun and immersive.

Example:

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Osaka…

En-route to Osaka to drop off an agent, with only a few hours to reach the drop-off point, radar picks up a large inbound convoy. The bright clear skies meant there was no way to avoid them on the surface and so my only hope was to dive to the bottom of the rather shallow bay and hope to avoid the numerous destroyers that were bound to be protecting the ships. To the bottom I dove and ordered the ship to run silent. With bated breath we waited as the ships drew closer. Sonar was picking up contact after contact including a disturbingly high number of war ships. This was not going to be easy.

The minutes ticked by and the ships drew ever closer. Then the pinging started. Damn these shallow waters. The first destroyer closed in on the sub while four of his friends started steaming to catch up. After the first wave of depth charges I didn't have high hopes of being able to get out of this alive so I set I direct course for the convoy. Perhaps I could lose the destroyers by hiding under the merchant ships. Despite the constant barrage of depth charges from the destroyers I made it to the convoy without taking any serious damage.

At first everything seemed like it was going to work. By sailing under the merchant ships the destroyers could not get to me and thus a great naval traffic jammed formed as merchants tried to move out of the way for the destroyers. Just as I was about to breath a sigh of relief an urgent shout emits from the conning tower. Warship closing fast! What? A new destroyer? Something doesn't seem right. There seems to be as many escorts for this convoy as there are merchants.

The pinging starts again as this new destroyer barrels right towards the sub. Here we go again I think to myself. Then it happens. The command room is filled with the sound of a rather large explosion followed by several more. What the hell was that? That was no depth charge! For a moment there was nothing but silence. Then the sounds of more small explosions and the sweet sounds of bulkheads collapsing.

It is then I realize that the pinging of the incoming destroyer has stopped. Brining the ship up to periscope depth I look through the scope towards the bearing of the once inbound destroyer to see nothing but a burring oil slick where the ship should be.

What….the….hell? Did it hit a mine? Several splashes are made in the water near the burning oil slick. Then several more and for a brief instant I see the silhouette of a plane. HAhahaha! I burst out laughing uncontrollably at the realization of what just happened. It would appear that a very eager and very, very novice pilot was trying to help out with the sub hunt by dropping some bombs on my location. Unfortunately for the Japanese this pilot was WAY off the mark and dropped his ordinance right on the destroyer! How ironic; saved by the very plane set out to kill me.

Turning the scope around I see the other destroyers are just starting to get unstuck from the traffic jam and so I start to make my escape. Deciding to make a sweep of the area with the periscope I notice a large grey silhouette off in the distance. Considering that this tiny convoy had such a high number of escorts I had a hunch that the lone silhouette in the distance was a carrier and most likely the one that launched the plane that saved me. I was tempted to go after it but thought better of it as the destroyers were making their way past the merchants now and I couldn't count on inept pilots saving me again so I crept away and made my escape.

This isnt an easter egg after all in my opinion after a bit of research
I make the sub to be of the series

Ha 3-52 two man mini sub
46 tons (sbmgd) 2 x 17.7 inch TT

these were intended originally for open sea battle according to
Fleets of WW2 by Richard worth if you can believe that.
anyway he goes on to state that they were intended
to be transported via either Seaplane Carriers like Chitose
here or on a fleet sub

so that would make this historically correct model as opposed to
easter egg I think but boy it sure felt like id found something
while I was on board.

Clayp, I have pretty much all the graphics options checked, including environmental effects, and I have a nice video card (ATI X1900XTX 512M). I use F11 to activate the external camera -- I play on 92% difficulty, but I gotta have that cam for screenies. Then I swing the camera around with the arrow keys and the left mouse button, sort of like flying a plane in a flight sim. I do this especially when the light is nice, or when something interesting is happening. CTL F11 snaps a shot, of course.

Try playing with different graphics settings. Unfortunately, in general you have to restart SH4 for many such settings to take effect. And they do have a significant effect on the look of your shots.

sqk7744

Don't be afraid to hit backspace ( pause time zero ) to get that perfect camera/screen shot. Then the Num + key to resume. Or F11 for external, when in the area you want to roam, hit Shft F2 for the free cam. hit backspace to pause then wander around, hit Ctrl F11 to snap a pic.

Def, like Grotius said, use the highest settings possible on the GPU. Environmental effects make all the difference for the water.

Have fun!
