Is there anyone who wants me to continue these invitations? I haven't seen any takers from this forum yet...
Fred, probably won't watch the streams but am enjoying the patrol reports and the screenshots.

In that case, I shall continue! Let me get you caught up.
1941, December 10, 1324: Believing they have successfully evaded the convoy's escorts, S-38 first rises to periscope depth, then surfaces. No ships spotted. Lieutenant Commander Fred Sloniker reports sinking of large modern composite freighter, resumes patrol around Aparri, ahead standard.
1439: Aircraft spotted. As the S-18 class lacks flak guns, it immediately dives to 150 feet, continuing at flank speed.
1441: Bomb impact on surface of the water. S-38 continues at flank speed along its patrol route.
1502: Battery power reported at 50%. S-38 surfaces and proceeds ahead standard.
1518: S-38 reduces speed to ahead one third to recharge batteries more quickly.
1640: Aircraft spotted. S-38 crash dives, then reduces speed to ahead one third to conserve batteries.
1732: Sound of explosion detected. Uncertain origin. LtCdr Sloniker decides to wait one hour before surfacing in case a plane is overhead.
1743: S-38 surfaces, proceeds ahead one third along patrol route.
2059: Patrol of Aparri complete. LtCdr Sloniker makes routine radio report and is directed to the southern Formosa patrol area (the closest remaining). S-38 sets course, ahead flank.
December 11, 0209: LtCdr Sloniker, believing S-38 far enough from Aparri to not have to worry about patrols, orders speed reduced to ahead one third to more quickly recharge batteries.
0651: Aircraft spotted. S-38 crash dives, then reduces speed to ahead one third.
0654: Bomb impact on surface of the water.
0837: S-38 ordered to surface.
2315: Battery recharge complete. S-38 moves to ahead flank.
December 12, 0027: S-38 enters southern Formossa patrol area, begins patrol.
December 13, 0100: Flash traffic received, reporting large Japanese convoy in area of 0370N 11030E and ordering units within striking distance to intercept. S-38 is too far to reach convoy in time and maintains patrol.
1633: LtCdr Sloniker makes routine report.
December 14, 0244: Patrol complete. LtCdr Sloniker makes routine report, then orders S-38 to patrol zone at 2430N 12530E.
December 15, 0152: S-38 reaches center of patrol zone, begins patrol route.
December 16, 1510: Aircraft spotted. Lookout reports aircraft not headed toward S-38, so S-38 dives to periscope depth to monitor its path. Aircraft does not spot it, so S-38 surfaces once aircraft is out of sight.
December 18, 1224: Patrol complete. LtCdr Sloniker makes routine report, then orders S-38 to patrol zone at 29N 12330E.
December 19, 0848: S-38 reaches patrol zone. Begins anti-shipping operations.
December 19, 0849: S-38 sets up patrol pattern off the coast of China, ahead standard. Patrol is expected to last 96 hours.
December 20, 0102: Op Immediate traffic received:

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY SHIFT BASE OF OPERATIONS TO SURABAYA JAVA X
Japanese forces continue to advance on Manila (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippines_Campaign_(1941%E2%80%9342)), despite the best efforts of the US and local units. S-38 is now based out of Surabaya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surabaya) and will likely return there at the end of its current objective.
1252: http://fi.somethingawful.com/images/smilies/emot-siren.gif Merchant ship spotted! http://fi.somethingawful.com/images/smilies/emot-siren.gif Medium modern split freighter, apparently unescorted. S-38 dives to periscope depth.

December 20, 1252: S-38 sights medium modern split freighter, apparently escorted. S-38 dives to periscope depth and proceeds toward the freighter, ahead flank.
1254: Freighter is unescorted and unaware of S-38's presence. S-38 plots intercept course.
1308: Realizing that S-38 cannot match freighter's speed underwater, Lieutenant Commander Fred Sloniker orders the boat surfaced. If the freighter spots the boat, it will be able to outrun it, but it is already outrunning it, and some chance is better than none.
1401: S-38 is able to close within 1500 yards of the freighter without being seen. It is now directly to the stern of the freighter and closing slowly.
1408: S-38 is within 1300 yards. The freighter suddenly begins to turn, indicating that the sub has been spotted. LtCdr Sloniker orders battle stations and tube 1 fired; torpedo misses.
1410: S-38 fires torpedo 3. It too misses. S-38 is within 1100 yards of freighter; deck gun is manned and begins to fire on the waterline.
1426: Despite holing the freighter in several places and doing significant damage to the stern of the ship, S-38 continues to be unsuccessful at causing sinking. LtCdr Sloniker orders tube 2 fired; torpedo misses.
1430: LtCdr Sloniker orders tube 4 fired. Torpedo impacts on stern of freighter. Freighter loses speed and begins to list.
1435: LtCdr Sloniker, believing the freighter unarmed, orders S-38 to come alongside the freighter and prepare to use the deck gun if torpedo damage proves insufficient.
1437: Freighter opens fire on S-38. LtCdr Sloniker immediately orders the boat to periscope depth, but a shot from the freighter punctures the control room pressure hull. The damage is unrepairable, and S-38 immediately sinks to the sea floor. S-38 is lost with all hands.

Forget you, game over screen. I have plenty to regret. That was a good clean kill that I botched because I didn't think a little freighter could be any sort of threat to a submarine. Instead, it proved able to kill the sub in a single shot. Live and learn. Or learn and die, as the case may be.

January 3, 1942 rolls around, and Lieutenant Commander Fred Sloniker is hauled out of the drink, hooked up to some jumper cables, and stuffed into the USS Plunger (SS-179) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Plunger_(SS-179)), recipient of the most battle stars of any boat in its class. It's a tough legacy to live up to, but hopefully he can manage it.
January 4, 1942, 0800: USS Plunger departs Surabaya en route to patrol area:
Operational Order
January 3, 1942
To: Fred Sloniker, USS Plunger (SS-179) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Plunger_(SS-179))
DEPART ON: January 4, 1942
Proceed to the Molucca Passage Choke Point at the north end of the Molucca Sea via the Banda Sea and conduct combat patrol within 100nm of its center point. Addition direction will be provided via message traffic Make reports as necessary to ABDA Task Force 3
OBJECTIVE:
Reach Molucca Passage Choke Point
http://i.imgur.com/uMPbVZa.png
0811: USS Plunger, clear of the docks, accelerates to flank speed.
0958: USS Plunger spots coastal composite freighter. This close to Surabaya, it is almost certainly a friendly ship, but Lieutenant Commander Fred Sloniker orders an intercept course nonetheless.
1023: Freighter is confirmed flying British colors. USS Plunger resumes course.
January 7, 0430: Having passed through the Flores Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flores_Sea) and Banda Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banda_Sea) without incident, USS Plunger reaches patrol area. LtCdr Sloniker makes routine report, receives new orders:
From: COMSUBPAC
To: USS Plunger (SS-179)
Conduct combat operations for the next 72hrs within 100nm of Molucca Passage. If IJN units detected move into your area report to ABDA Task Force 3 ASAP. If IJN units are detected outside of the Patrol area, proceed at your discretion to intercept and destroy.
USS Plunger begins patrol, ahead standard.
January 10, 0428: Having completed patrol without incident, LtCdr Sloniker makes routine report, receives new orders:
From: COMSUBPAC
To: USS Plunger (SS-179)
Proceed at best speed to the Tarakan Island and conduct scouting operation for the next 72hours. Remain within 100nm of the center of the oparea. If IJN units are detected outside of the Patrol area, proceed at your discretion to intercept and destroy.
USS Plunger sets course, ahead flank.
1721: Diving Officer advises fuel reserve at 50 percent. LtCdr Sloniker orders reduction to ahead standard.
January 11, 0507: USS Plunger reaches patrol area. LtCdr Sloniker makes routine report, then orders the boat to a point 30 nm off the coast of Tarakan Island. He believes that any object of interest in the patrol area must pass through this port.
1428: http://fi.somethingawful.com/images/smilies/emot-siren.gif Task force sighted! http://fi.somethingawful.com/images/smilies/emot-siren.gif Lieutenant Commander Fred Sloniker reports its position to COMSUBPAC, receiving the following reply:
GOOD FIND X WILL DIRECT FURTHER ASSETS TO INTERCEPT X BREAK CONTACT AND RTB AT YOUR DISCRETION X
Disappointed at being ordered not to attack, LtCdr Sloniker nevertheless orders USS Plunger to dive to 150 feet and sets course away from the task force.
1657: No sound contacts detected. USS Plunger moves to periscope depth, but rough seas prevent survey of area. LtCdr Sloniker orders sub surfaced; no contacts sighted. Hoping to find a target for his as-yet-unused torpedos, LtCdr Sloniker orders USS Plunger to resume patrol of area.
Although the radio message said to return to base at my discretion, the patrol is still marked incomplete. I decided it'd be best to finish the 72 hours before heading back. Anyway, I want to at least shoot at something!
January 12, 2012: Officer on deck spots Hatsuharu-Shigure destroyer, possibly part of larger task group. LtCdr Sloniker reports its position to COMSUBPAC, receiving the following reply:
Roger your contact report. If fuel and weapons permit, maneuver into position and engage IJN units.
LtCdr Sloniker orders dive to periscope depth and course set to intercept destroyer.

Hey where did you spot the infamous Ghost Ship
It lurks by the Luzon Strait.
It lurks by the Luzon Strait.
Maybe it lurks around randomly? I encountered this guy right off Johnston Island on my way to Eniwetok from Pearl. First patrol running the Terrible T campaign. (TMO without the Small Patch.)

Captain Henry Limpid
USS Sea Lion
May 10, 1942
After getting back from patrol, I received word from Admiral Jimbuna that I’ll be captain of a new boat. I’ll also be adding to my current crew. The Admiral escorted me to a rusty old Sargo class boat. My “new” boat wasn’t so new after all. It turned out, Pearl gets the new boats, and their old one’s get sent to Brisbane, I guess you can’t get everything. My expanded crew wasn’t enough to fill all the empty slots. I turned around and looked at my old boat. At least the Sea Lion is better than the old leaky Pig boat we had.
We received our orders. Patrol off the coast of Rabaul. We made our way there. Our “new” boat was quieter, more spacious, and faster than our old boat. Other than drills and testing the boat, it was a quiet trip. We arrived on station and started a boring patrol. The weather was fair, and the sea was calm.
June 13, 1942
We got our first contact. We continued to track it by radar until it came in sonar range. Went to periscope depth and continued tracking her. XO Wolferz called general quarters. When she reached about 4,000 yards, I raised the scope. She was a loan freighter, a Nagara Maru class. Her belly was so full, she looked as if her decks were in danger of staying awash. In middle of the night, I felt confident we were not going to be seen.
Our boat was lined up to fire so that the fish would hit the ship at an angle. Torpedoes set for slow speed, contact detonator, depth set shallow. Ordered all four tubes fired.
After hearing from Chief Petty Officer Steve that the fourth fish was fired, I ordered the rudder to a full turn. Increased speed to full, to line up the boat for a stern shot, just in case.
After waiting, my firing officer, Ensign Aktungboy announces, “Torpedo is a dud, sir, torpedo is a dud, sir, torpedo is a dud, sir, torpedo is a dud, sir.” How can four torpedoes be duds?
After the stern was lined up, we were about 2,000 yards away. I ordered speed to slow. I ordered all four stern tubes fired. Then just watched and waited while the empty tubes were being loaded.
After waiting, Ensign Aktungboy announces, “Torpedo is a dud, sir, torpedo is a dud, sir, torpedo is a dud, sir, torpedo is a dud, sir.” What’s going on here? How can our brand new Mk 14s all be duds? We must be doing something wrong.
At this point, even tube one hadn’t been loaded yet. A decision needed to be made. I looked carefully at the ship’s deck. Wolferz used the observation scope and did the same. We both came to the same conclusion. The Japanese ship didn’t have any armament on board. I ordered the emergency tanks blown. We’re going to sink this thing the old fashioned way. I ordered my navigation officer, Lieutenant Armistead to keep the boat lined up with the ship. Chief Petty Officer Scurvy got his crew together and started firing as quickly as they could.
After a lot of great shots and a couple pretty fire balls, the Nagara Maru started sinking beneath the waves at 08:44.

^ HEY!I actually sang that: " DUD dud dud Duuuuud" to the opening notes of Beethoven's fifth! I can't help it! I was an abused child..and ran away to join the NAVY to escape endless piano lessons by an overbearing mom..And I've already been passed over for promotion twice as an ensign...'damned with faint praise' as they say, so I'm grateful for you keeping me on as the torpedo officer:D You neglected the bit: that dive-officer Swamprat forgot to counter-flood after the torpedo launches and we were at an obtuse upward bow angle for a spell before regaining level trim to even turn to use the rear tubes. That actually proved a blessing disguise though as sound-man Tango reported one of our launches was a circle torpedo:oops: and it ran directly under where the bow would have been had we been level or over the lowered stern; he couldn't really tell... the god of war is mysterious 'daemon'

It's the combination of TDW fire damage mod an TMO smoke Mod which give that effect.

The convoy lights are dead ahead
The merchantmen lay in their bed
The thump of diesels hammers down
In the oily sea - the killing ground
His knuckles white his eyes alight
He slams the hatch on the deadly night
A cunning fox in the chickens lair
A hound of hell and the devil don't care
Running silent, running deep, we are your final prayer
Warriors in secret sleep, a merchantman's nightmare
A silent death lies waiting for all of you below
Running silent, running deep, sink into your final sleep
Chill the hearts of fighting men
In the open ocean wondering when?
The boat will shiver - men will die
A cast of millions - a part to play
Killer? victim? or fool for a day
Obeying an order - men have to die
Us or them - a well rehearsed lie
Running silent, running deep, we are your final prayer
Warriors in secret sleep, a merchantman's nightmare
A silent death lies waiting for all of you below
Running silent, running deep, sink into your final sleep
The lifeboats shattered the hull is torn
The tar black smell of burning oil
On the way down to Davy Jones
Every man for himself - you're on your own
The wolf eyes watch the crosswire
"Stern tubes ready", "Aim and fire!"
They can pin some medal on your chest
But in two more weeks - dead like the rest
Running silent, running deep, we are your final prayer
Warriors in secret sleep, a merchantman's nightmare
A silent death lies waiting for all of you below
Running silent, running deep, sink into your final sleep
Running silent, running deep, we are your final prayer
Warriors in secret sleep, a merchantman's nightmare

Brass must've liked my 10-kill patrol, because they gave me USS Balao at the beginning of February '43. Double the AA guns means never having to dive again, right? Anyhow, some clown told the dive master that this new Balao could dive practically to the bottom of the sea. On our way out of Midway, we resolved to put her on the bottom; "new depth 450 feet!" The boat creaked and groaned over the next few minutes as the needle crept ever-downward, fingers ready to blow tanks, until there was noplace left on the gauge to go, and we leveled off.
We glanced around at each other, wondering how long a test would suffice. In the end, it came when the XO announced that it was time to shoot our latitude, and anyhow nature was calling. We blew ballast and rocketed back into the sunlight.
A few days later, we ran past Guam in clear daylight. With blazing Oerlikons and a daredevil at the helm, we were engaged by 7 pairs of Zeroes and left 10 aviators in the water, sustaining negligible damage. That night's inventory check found only 1 drum of ammunition remaining per gun; it was decided to leave the air to the Air Corps and spend the days submerged

I started a career in a S boat. A fictious S-05 (SOS lol).
I really wanted to make the sub look worn out. I did the trick when you edit the o01.dds to get the hull number on both sides.
I changed the crews uniform so they are dirty all the time.

Note: The USS Dragonfish is the renamed USS Drum, in honor of our original craft, the USS Seadragon, which completed 3 patrols
First Patrol of USS Dragonfish - Hawaii
Deployed to Patrol the Philippine Sea:
Captains Personal Log:
The journey to and from Hawaii is long and arduous. Will request return to Asiatic Fleet at earliest possible time. The new submarine is nice, but I miss the USS Dragonfish
Due to extremely poor weather starting west of Midway, USS Dragonfish arrived at the Marinilla Islands with 60% fuel reserves. After successfully engaging two merchant ships in estimated 7-10m swells, the order was given to return to Midway while still 1200km short of primary objective.
Successfully engaged two more merchant ships while returning in equally bad weather, arrived at Midway with 20% fuel reserves, before returning to Hawaii.
While the results were respectable, crew morale took a hit from failing to complete any primary objective, and over weather related frustrations (surfaced submarines are not enjoyable in rough seas).
Second Patrol of USS Dragonfish - Hawaii
Tasked to insert intelligence team south west of Osaka and Kishiwada, via Osaka Bay:
Captains Personal Log:
I fear either intelligence is becoming desperate, or my previous successes have convinced the admiralty that I can do the impossible.
Arrived in the Kii Channel with surprisingly little resistance. Waited until nightfall before sprinting between two small islands at the entrance to Osaka bay to better avoid shore based artillery. Forced to surface for much of the night to evade detection by merchant shipping, waiting another day in suitably deep water to make insertion under cover of night.
Encountered Sanpan after insertion returning to periscope deep waters. Engaged Sanpan. Tactical oversight resulted in maintaining ahead standard. Warship picked up on sonar 20m after sinking Sanpan, while still 2-3km from being able to dive. Changed course to head north and engaged flank speed. Warship failed to acquire us. Suspected minesweeper.
Almost caught entering the Kii Channel by another Warship while sprinting through shallows. Was able to maintain safe distance and get to deeper water.
Captains Log:
We have completed a difficult mission, but I am reluctant to head home with only 200 tons sunk.
Tasked with Patrol East of Owase:
While frustrated by a very heavy air presence during the day, and failure to successfully intercept two convoys and a task force, merchant hunting proved extremely favourable. Successfully sent to huge liners, three ocean liners, and one 7000 ton freighter to the bottom. Patrol total of ~68,000 tons, best so far for this crew.
Attempted to engage port at Shingu, but found the port to be empty, before returning home.
Third Patrol of USS Dragonfish
Tasked with Intelligence Gather in Hiroshima:
Captains Log:
No.
USS Dragonfish conducted raids on the ports Shingu, Katsuura, Takanabi, Miyazaki. Sunk one subchaser, and damaged another at Shingu. Katsuura was not populated, while Takanabi and Miyazaki were unobservable due to fog.
Unsuccessfully engaged 3 convoys and two destroyer groups, in each case either being detected or failing to hit target. Sunk one medium sized freighter during return to Hawaii. Flak gun was damaged by a bomber during return.
Captains Log:
I suppose any captain is entitled to an off patrol. The eggheads at R&D have also sent us a better air search radar, and a surface search radar system. I eagerly anticipate an opportunity to relocate. The Midway approach currently runs through almost a week of heavy aircover to reach Japanese shipping lanes.
Is there anyone who wants me to continue these invitations? I haven't seen any takers from this forum yet...
This might be fun if you can explain how to hook up to your site. From what I've seen it's possible to watch events unfold in real time?

USS Balao, late afternoon March 2 1943, western approaches to St George Channel.
Heavy rain and fog, 7kt winds.
USS Balao was conducting a standard switchback barrier patrol West of Rabaul; 6 bow and 3 stern Mk14s still aboard. Hydrophone picked up merchant screws to the East, heading WNW at medium speed. Balao altered course to intercept, and detected 3 more merchants and a small warship farther behind the first.
After a quick conference, the CO decided that the very-reduced visibility would be suitable for a high-speed surfaced torpedo run against the head of the column, attacking each ship as it came in sight and the running off into the settling dusk before the following escort could make contact.
Apparently the Japs have radar. Soon after the whole line was picking up on radar, the merchants began to zig-zag and the escort made a beeline for Balao. The CO took Balao to flank, crossing the convoys's T at about 3000y. The presumed destroyer, which had moved to the convoys's port side, was now stuck with the lead merchant interposed between himself and Balao.
Balao and the convoy approached each other about head-on, passing just to starboard. Balao was able to make out the escort's signal light and superstructure, chancing a spread at 1500y that missed abaft. Balao submerged to decks awash in an effort to present a smaller target, yet began receiving aimed shellfire before making visual contact.
The Fubuki loomed out of the mist and raced on by, receiving relatively-ineffective 20mm counterfire. An aft torpedo was vainly loosed as the destroyer faded into the rain, making to come about to starboard behind Balao. A 4500-ton freighter next appeared 500 yards of Balao's starboard-bow, firing small arms until a Mk14 broke her keel a few seconds later. The next two merchants peeled-off to port, but the last turned starboard and presented an easy broadside target; it too was quickly dispatched.
Balao turned South, seeking the next closest merchant, which was moving too fast to catch with decks awash. The boat surfaced and pursued, but was unable to get an adequate solution on the maneuvering freighter from abaft.
Down to one Mk14, and receiving aimed fire from the obscured Fubuki, Balao turned Southeast at flank speed. The Fubuki gave chase, landing a third and final hit to the sub before turning back to the fleeing freighters. Damage Control was able to fix most systems, but the pressure hull was not considered fit for meaningful diving. Balao took advantage of nightfall to slip through the St George passage and make a beeline for Midway.

Here's a memorable encounter from one of my earliest SH4 play-throughs...
While being more of a fleet boat type myself, I decided to give the U-boat expansion a try. After taking command of my first U-boat (I believe it was U-178) and after completing the mandatory cargo drop-off for the first patrol, my superiors decided to either test my mettle or see how quickly they could kill me off on patrol #2... by sending me to reconnoiter Fremantle.
In hindsight I should have waited for nightfall before infiltrating the harbour, but nonetheless I timed my approach to dodge the lone destroyer (a Clemson, if I recall) on harbour patrol, take the photos and get the heck out of Dodge.
And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for that meddling airplane!
So here I was, scraping bottom at periscope depth, dodging a stick of bombs and a destroyer about to turn me to mulch. Mind you, I hadn't mastered down-the-throat shots at this point with SH4, and all previous attempts ended up being little more than a waste of torpedoes. Deciding that if I had to go, I'd at least go in a blaze of glory. I blew ballast, dialed up ahead flank, ordered the deck gunners to fire at will, turned broadside to him and manned the heavy flak cannon myself (I doubt it actually causes damage to enemy ships, but slinging the extra lead in his general direction made me feel better).
It was a tough fight as you'd probably expect. Damage reports flew thick and fast, compartments flooded, everything around me was disintegrating and I was sure my own horrible demise was inevitable, but then it happened... I got a sinking notification! "Take that, you bugger!" I thought, believing that all of the flooding I was taking would send me to join him soon enough. However, the crew fixed the pumps, patched the leaks and we were eventually more or less on an even (if somewhat battered) keel. I was caught between laughing and crying all the way back to Penang with my hull damage hovering somewhere around 75-80%. Poor U-178 looked more like Swiss cheese than a submarine, but she managed to limp back home to fight again another day.
Needless to say, I didn't take any photos home with me (the destroyer wrecked the camera; that's my story and I'm sticking to it).
Anyhow, there are some morals one can take from this story - 1: harbour infiltrations are best done after nightfall because 2: airplanes are the bane of a submariner's existence, weak/unlucky destroyers notwithstanding. But, most importantly, 3: even when you're sure your situation's hopeless, fight on! Because, take it from me, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat tastes pretty darn good.
Have a good evening folks, and good hunting!:salute:

I got into some real trouble on a recent mission. U-796 was assigned to engage a convoy before it arrived in Port Elizabeth. I managed to intercept the convoy near Seychelles. To my surprise, my target was a Titanic-esque liner with lots of men walking along deck with at least 6 destroyer escorts. Since the liner was zig-zagging and blacked out, I began my approach through the escorts.
The destroyers were quick to detect me and I was soon working hard to avoid being sunk. I managed to close on the liner and hide by staying a few hundred yards off it's stern and anticipating its course changes.
I spent many hours hiding iin this fashion. Each time the liner would make a greater course deviation I would again be attacked.
Finally, with battery power getting low I decided to attack in dramatic fashion. I noticed the liner had no depth charge racks or guns, so I surfaced along it's starboard side while all escorts were on the port side. I saw two destroyers approaching the liner on a course that would take them across its port bow.
I set my pistols to magnetic, depth 1.5 meters on a course of 000. I fired in some way as one would fire at an aircraft. Not really aimed, but I figured I could hit them. I hit both destroyers and sank them both. I immediately submerged to periscope depth and used a combination of back emergency and full rudder to open distance between me and the liner as she turned to avoid the sinking destroyers. I was amazed to see the liner accidentally ram and sink an old freighter that was in the convoy.
I managed to line up on the liner at about 400 meters maybe 30 degrees off the starboard bow. With escorts in pursuit I just locked the liner in my periscope view and fired 3 fish. I began a crash dive at flank speed as soon as the last fish cleared the tubes. I set depth for 120 meters and waited for the depth charges. I heard three torpedo impacts and curiously looked at the surface camera view to see the liner listing to starboard and on fire with many lifeboats in the water.
What followed was hours of being pursued and depth charged. I was finally able to surface at night in a storm and eventually made it back to Batavia.

Then an ULTRA intercept notifies us of convoys steaming towards the Philippines, Manila bay in particular. We have the fuel and the ammo, so a wild dash to intercept begins.

Success! Its far from ideal conditions but I won't have the fuel to chase for much longer, and the idea of heading to Saipan through the Sibuyan sea on critical fuel is not comforting. We'll have to launch our attack now, rather than stalk until nightfall.
Four fish, 6 degree spread. We're aiming for a tanker in the middle of the convoy, but we don't have time to ID everything and set appropriate depth. They're running at 25ft. No surprise then when the fish hit everything but the tanker!

Sunday, June 27, 1943 - 2315- a purple sky meets a black sea - making 20 knots surfaced - the crew are in great spirits - from the conning tower, I gaze out across the vast expanse of ocean - it is as if we are the only boat afloat - my tactics shall remain unchanged on this, the U-847's first combat patrol - attack aggressively and resupply as often as possible, staying close to supply sources - the final mission of U-196 consisted of 7 refits - hours pass and thus far, we have seen and heard nothing - always waiting it would seem.
It is s cold and silent, the sea. Such a peaceful place in many respects, broken only by the distant humming of our screws.
It has been weeks since we were home. My beard seems to grow by the hours and the air is humid and warm. "Wie gehts?" asks a commrade. I tilt my head and smile in response.
I often wonder, as I lay in my rack at night, what master do we serve? These vessels, these crews that we engage, do they feel the same as I do???
I recall one day, we surfaced to search for survivors. It was sad that we found none. I often wonder, in the galant struggle for victory, how many lives are lost needlessly?
I smoke. Not because I enjoy it, but because it breaks the monotony. The silence. The stillness...waiting for the next catstrophy.
I wonder how God could make such a being. One that would seek to destroy his own kind with amazing machines. When did we come to see things so differently?
So hard to write sometimes. The words get lost in my insanity of thought. The cold dark waters offer anonymity, but no escape from moral responsibility.
When I try to sleep, I hear the thunderous claps from above. The boat is shaken to its very core. Water seeps from fittings like rain, covering the iron floor.
Sometimes, it goes on for what seems like an eternity. Tempting fate, Deeper still, the only escape. Sometimes I wonder if the boys in Kiel ever imagined she could dive so deep. Water from welded seams, like salty tears, begin to weep.
The smell of sulfur hangs in the air, like a moist cloud, adding to my despair. I wonder why we play this deadly game. In the calmness of the sea, you can almost hear the sound of fear as it echoes against the steel.
As Oberleutnant, I must always be emotionless. Each and every Matrosengefreiter must see me as a man of iron. But in my heart, I miss Jutta and my son, days of fishing on the Elbe.
I must think that this war will end someday, but soon enough for me will it never be. Until then I shall count the days until we finally come home from the sea. Until then, I bow my head in private and recite quietly....
Ewiger Gott,

I reached the area north of midway where I encountered what I thought was a convoy.
I got a big greedy and turned course to intercept. Everything was cool until I hear my sonar operator saying. ''Warship bearing 182 closing fast speed.''. Then I dive at around 280 feet. Then I look at my map and see that the hydrophone contacts are kind of spinning. My first reaction was. What kind of escort keep their convoy in danger? Don't they know they risk being flanked by another fleet boat?
Out of curiosity I used the free cam ( I always do, sometime its fun to look at your boat cruising.) then at my grand surprise... it wasn't a convoy.
Imagine now my terror. Me a noob playing full realism on TMO 2.5 and just have aggroed an entire task force. I fought, or run, with courage! But, they pursued me relentlessly and without mercy. Me and my men died a slow agonizing death as we ran out of oxygen. Probably wasted everything left screaming in terror.

I have the bonus Narhwal mod with RFB no map contacts.
Last night I was off the coast of Japan and got a contact report. I pinged it to get the distance and plotted it on the map. Waited five minutes, pinged it again to get the course and the speed using the nomograph.
Speed estimate was between 11 or 12 knots. I checked the rec manual for the draft and it said max speed was 10 knots. I guess that is why they call it an estimate!
I fired four torpedoes. One went screwy and decided it wanted to travel it's own course. Two went deep, but one actually hit! Luckily it was right in the engine room so it was enough to take it down.
***
Later that evening with overcast skies I got a contact report coming in hot!
I check the binoculars and it is a 8 ton merchant! I ping it to get distance and plot it, but it is coming in so fast I won't be able to wait five minutes to get a speed estimate and move to get a good angle. The Narwhal isn't the most nimble submarine in the fleet.
So after a minute or so I ping it again to get a rough course estimate.
I go flank at periscope depth to get into a 90 degree shot angle. My idea is to get so close that it's speed won't matter. With my rough course estimate and eyeball I get under 900 yards and fire four torpedoes.
Three miss but one hits and slows it down.
Still at flank I decide to finish it off with my two deck guns, I don't want it to get away. I go decks awash just in case the merchant decides to fire at me and I can submerge quickly.
BOOM! BOOM!
BOOM! BOOM!
My two deck guns tear into the merchant. I have my crew aim at the waterline so even if they shoot high they will hit something. The merchant isn't firing back so I can take my time.
BOOM! BOOM!
BOOM! BOOM!
BOOM! BOOM!
BOOM! BOOM!

I've been away from this forum for quite some time. It's good to be back on deck.
Name: John Calvert Gates
Date: 6-3-1942
Submarine: S-18
Base: Dutch Harbor
S-18 cast off out of Dutch Harbor on the morning of Wednesday, June 6, 1942. The weather was fine for sailing and S-18 made 10 knots to patrol the waters around Attu Islandin the Aluetian chain. The crew were untested but eager for contact with the Japs. There were some doubts about if the enemy would make any appearances, but soon the crew of S-18 would get more than they bargained for. After a little over a week of patrol, in the straight between Attu and Attuga, S-18's sonar man picked up screws making the distinct high pitch whine of a Japanese warship. Captain Gates lined up the old sugar boat for an attack. The warship was sailing alone on calm seas in broad daylight. S-18 inched closer and closer to the lone warship at a depth of 160 feet. At the last moment, S-18 was taken to periscope depth and 3 tubes were opened. With the periscope piercing through the calm sea, Captain Gates had to be quick and accurate. It was a Fubuki class destroyer. He made his measurements twice and decided on a firing solution. Soon after, just as the destroyer passed by the bow at less than 1000 yards, Captain Gates fired three of his old Mk. 10 torpedoes at the doomed ship. They all swam away from S-18 with a tremendous hiss. The seconds ticked away. Soon, an explosion rang out. Secondary explosions followed. Then, a second hit directly under the bridge. The destroyer was blown in half and the two pieces bobbed like corks as black smoke billowed from the fires. S-18, after a brief moment of celebration and relief, dove back down to the depths to evade any other ships that may now be out for blood.
During the rest of the patrol, more destroyers were located by radar and sonar but Captain Gates had become more cautious after one depth charged the sub to no succes. After that incident, the crew of S-18 waited for perfect opportunities in which they would clearly have the upper hand. That perfect chance came as S-18 made its way back to Dutch. On the return trip, roughly 1000 nm west of the harbor, the sonar man called out the screws of three destroyers. They were going fast and headed right down S-18's throat. Three destroyers were headed straight for S-18. The Captain, with little other choices, ordered the sub to be positioned closer to the destroyers, bow to bow. Suddenly, the ominous pings of the enemy sonar could be heard throughout the sub. It was now or never. The Captain fired a salvo of four Mk. 10s before ordering a steep dive to safety. One torp found its mark on the starboard bow of one of the destroyers. It sunk in quick order after an enormous fireball engulfed the stricken warship. A second Mk. 10 hit another destroyer right on the nose. The ship's bow lowered into the water, but the Jap crew managed to keep her afloat.
With S-18 running on fumes, Captain Gates ordered her back to Dutch. She finally made it back on July 13, after 40 days at sea. The crew came back optimistic, having just sunk two enemy warships. But Captain Gates knew better. He knew that S-18 had just played a very dangerous game. If only the destroyer's depth charges had found their mark, S-18's first patrol would have ended at the bottom of the sea rather than Dutch. That was a thought which kept him up at night for some time. But no rest for the wicked - S-18 was ordered back out within a matter of weeks. Captain Gates, now a combat veteran, peered toward the western horizon with caution in his eyes. S-18, he knew, would be playing the game again in due time.

The coolness of September seemed to fail to reach this part of the world as we headed out to our first mission. Taking the sub out we had the rear of the boat rather cramped with a spy and his raft added to our crew allotment. It took us almost a week but we slipped in at night and let our extra crewman paddle to shore.
We had been seen by a plane as we entered the bay so we took a route to the west moving out of the current bay and into a neighboring bay. Our objective was to create havoc drawing attention away from our spy.
As we moved into the bay it was as if manna was falling from heaven. We hit 3 individual ships and sent them to the bottom of the sea; running to our next target avoiding the sub chaser roaming in the bay. Then came our last target.
As we were moving into place for our third attack we picked up warships quite a distance away. They were far enough away that we were not all that concerned. We moved into a large signal and found a tanker moving towards us. It was a large tanker and it was moving fast enough to indicate the captain had a load to deliver. We positioned ourselves and waited only bringing up the periscope to confirm our fix on the ships location.
With patience the ship moved abeam of us allowing us to get off two fish that would not let the crew react to their trails. The cover of darkness and no moon helped. The first torpedo ran in front of the ship but the second torpedo nailed it in the aft quarters. With a large potential for warship action we chose to preserve our remaining torpedoes and finished off the tanker with our gun. As it broke up and sank we ran into position to discover just what it was we were about to confront.
It did not take long for sonar to report that it was picking up a huge number of props turning at different rates throughout a sweep that covered more than 40 degrees spread. I dropped the periscope and we went down below the thermal to 230 feet depth. The sub felt like we were in the middle of a boiler room instead of a sub. We kept water and salt pills moving among the crew and soon we had the confirmation we were looking for. Three warships formed the forward screen while a large large array of ships were behind that screen. The rear screen were two destroyers.
We continued to sit on the lower realm with more than 1000 yards of water beneath us if needed. Everyone had a rise in moral as the report came in that we passed the screen without detection. With two ships now 1000 yards away we began our ascent to periscope depth. Unfortunately by the time we reach that depth we had ships moving well past us. The moonless night gave me only vague shapes to aim at with not much else. I thought I saw some large merchant ships and a more but it was not the time to do anything but act. First the forward torpedoes, two per ship. Then the rear torpedoes and two per ship. And then a quick return to the cold depths.
Halfway down there were reports of the recognizeable CLANG followed by the BOOM of a torpedo impact and ignition. We had a mix of calls torpedo impact but also torpedo missed reports. Two ships could be heard breaking up and got chalked as kills. We turned to the direction of the convoy and followed at the quick pace of 2 knots. After a period of time elapsed we saw two ships that fell back. We had injured ducks.
It took almost two hours but we were positioned in a good position for the worst damaged ship which was moving so slowly that we could catch up with it. We came up to periscope depth and gave this ship a needed sinking. I spun around to see the second ship was moving better but had fire coming out her port side. We sent two more torpedoes at her starboard side and dove down to move away. Our job was done here.
It took several days of ducking and dodging to get out of that bay as we had war ships and aircraft constantly searching for us and we had a lonely pair of torpedoes in our forward tubes remaining. We slipped out without damage and out of the islands into the open sea. This was supposed to be our trip to home port but HQ had a different idea, they wanted us to patrol the China Sea.
We headed to Midway for refit but got interrupted by a fast moving merchant that turned out to be a large European passenger ship. Our lonely two torpedoes slowed it down and our deck guns finished it off. Everyone was celebrating and that made the trip for refit easier to handle. We had now been out to sea for 3 months. Merry Christmas. We returned to the sea to our next task in the China Sea.

This thread has been begging for a story. I hope you enjoy it while waiting for your game to arrive.
Extreme Angle
The boat had spent some time at a Florida port, probably Port Everglades. Before leaving, we had taken on some important guests. If memory serves, they were Norwegian Navy officers. We were taking them on a short “demonstration” trip to strut our stuff and show them what the U.S. navy was made of. (Truncated)
I have lurked here for a while. I signed up to say that that was one hell of a story.
It's now one of my two favorite Navy stories, the other one is humorous and involves someone trying to cook a tin of Jiffy-Pop popcorn in front of the AEGIS radar, hurriedly sweeping the smoking mess over the side, the CIC freaking out, and the ship having to file a report of a one mile wide UFO 100 meters off their stern.

Hi guys, apparently I haven't been on this forum since 2007...wow.
Anyway; I knocked together a video of Silent Hunter IV. Very little happens, and I daresay a lot of the facts I spout are either a/ vastly simplified or b/ plain wrong...but it's possible you'll find some enjoyment in it. Or not!

As a side-note, is it worth me trying SH5? (I realise this question is in the wrong thread, so PM replies would be fine!).

I know this is not the correct way but it works and is fun! I spot a large convoy, 4 escorts and a lot of targets. I have my two best men on the deck guns. I headed for the closed escort at flank speed and open fire at 5500 yards. After sinking the first escort I head right at the next closest escort. After sinking that escort, I let the guns go on the convoy. I will sink two or three of the convoy before the next escort is in range. When all is done I have sunk all escorts and have fun picking of the rest of the convoy.
:arrgh!:
PS: I can not bring myself to play on the other side. No U-boats!

This is not about a full patrol, but part of one as I've yet been unable to finish my lifeguard mission.
My career's 7th war patrol, and my 2nd patrol in the Gar class USS Grayling (SS-209) didn't start off interestingly as I departed on July 10th '42 for a lifeguard mission in the Solomon Islands. I was told to arrive there by December 8th which is absurd. I arrived to the scene on July 14th and saw no planes or survivors for 5 days, taking my frustration on the occasional fishing boats that passed by with my deck gun.
As the days passed by and COMSUBPAC kept telling me to stick with my mission and no change in sight, I said to myself "Screw it!" and set my course towards Truk.
I arrived safely at Truk late at evening of July 24th and my radar showed up almost a dozen seemingly stationary contacts. They didn't seem to be in any kind of formation, but I assumed at least a couple of them might be destroyers so I went to periscope depth and approached, only to find tankers and merchants on a silver platter with no warship in sight. Most of them had deck guns so I took it safe and sent the biggest tankers to the bottom with my torpedoes. There were so many ships that I didn't bother with anything lighter than 4,000 tons.
I spent the night and morning moving from ship to ship, racking up about 30,000 tons. As I was lurking towards my next big targets west of Fefan island and the day was becoming bright, the weather got absolutely horrid with almost zero visibility. I thought, since the visibility is so bad, it will be safe to surface since my CO2 levels were getting high.
http://puu.sh/qbKsw/83e68c83b7.jpg
As I got to the surface, as expected, I got radar reports of the merchants and tankers I had not torpedoed yet. But suddenly I got nine unexpected radar contacts off to NNW of my location. The ships seemed to be in a formation of two rows or lines, unlike the merchants I had detected until now, so I assumed they must be warships.
Change of plans: I marked the radar contacts on my map and back to periscope depth we go. My fore torpedoes were running low, only 4 left thanks to some duds earlier against the tankers. I still had 6 torpedoes aft. I decided to pick the closest warship as my target and then flee the scene as soon as I've fired off my fore torpedoes. I would save my aft torpedoes for any pursuers or some extra tankers on the way out of Truk. Thanks to the horrible weather, I managed to approach the formation safely without being detected. But as we all know, bad weather works both ways. I didn't want to waste my last four fore torpedoes without knowing the identity of my target, so I had to get close to confirm it. I kept creeping closer and closer squinting my eyes in the periscope, at 1 knot speed scraping the bottom because the other nearest warships were no further than 900 yards away from me. I was getting really nervous as I was less than 150 yards from my mark and still saw nothing, until suddenly...

A Shoukaku class fleet carrier. I hurried to reverse at 1/3 and waited until I was at 700 yards, constantly listening if anyone had noticed me. I launched my last four fore torpedoes in a spread at the carrier I could no longer see and waited. Four impacts. She's going down.

I hurried away as fast as I dared with the storm muffling my prop sounds and nobody seemed to follow me.
I returned back to the three tankers west of Fefan and while I was using my last aft torpedoes on them, it seems the Japs had finally got reinforcements after my over 12 hour raid on Truk. I had four warship sound contacts in different directions, closing fast and that meant it's time to end my raid. I had planned to leave one or two aft torpedoes in case I get found and pursued but the greed got the better of me as I had to use 3 torpedoes on a Nippon Maru tanker who just refused to sink. Luckily I managed to get away from the arriving escorts just barely before they came to check out the vicinity of the sinking tankers, thanks to the storm. In my hurried escape I went too close to the shore and scraped the bottom damaging my aft batteries, but luckily I got away with it.
By 15:00 the storm cleared just as I got into deeper waters. I used up all of my torpedoes, but my 17 hour raid on Truk got me tonnage just short of 87,000.
I may or may not have failed to save some shot down pilots of ours during my patrol's beginning phase, but I think sinking a fleet carrier will more than pay back for that loss in terms of lives saved

Despite that, Silent Hunter 4 seems nice, but none of the mega mods is working. I should have gotten the gold edition with U-Boat mission, but I read about the incompability after I bought my game. And the ui seems super awkward if you are used to SH3.

Get you still the version 1.5 (UBM), then you can also use the whole large Modi and ModPacks.
The -which SH4 particularly well- is the team management... once properly adjusted, it runs almost by itself.
In addition, one must not forget that the USN and the Silent Service in the IIWW was the only one a successful submarine warfare.
To the user interface you get used to relatively quickly...

Yeah, I ordered the Disk.
Do I need to install the whole game again or can I just add the U-Boat missions?
Also, I can't save my campaign.
I'm also having a ahrd time to adjust to the very low diving depth of american subs. Once you reach a certain depth you are toast, there is no feedback like in Silent Hunter 3 where your Chief informs you if you are too deep.

This is not really a problem - the ASW abilities of the IJN are limited in relation to the Allies.
Note only one - an American submarine, which has a test depth of 250 feet, can easily dive 350 feet deep (security factor of 1.5).
If you then have SH4 V1.5, just try my ModPack out.
It is a carefree package, which brings you closer to the Pacific War and tries to create a half-realistic picture of the submarine war ... as far as the game as such permits.
It is really fun ... if such an utterance is allowed.
:salute:
Nachtrag:

"Full" realism, manual targeting, no map contacts , but external view enabled
November 1943- USS Swordfish(Sargo Class) out of Midway.
Assigned to patrol the Japan-Palau shipping lanes(Area Vestibule) departed Midway in early November, heading to area at standard speed.
After some dive dives and getting familiar with TDC etc again, heading to the area.Arrived to assigned area in Phillipine Sea West of Area VESTIBULE.
Patrolled the area for 4 days with no contacts except two patrol plans two days apart.Dove for both on sight, resurfaced and continued patrol.
After time on station was up, heading for Area VESTIBULE to patrol the obvious shipping lane from the home islands to the Palaus.
After three days running a NW/SE line roughly, radar made contact at 21:40 hours.Headed toward contacts at flank speed and could soon see had a convoy on the scope.Went to General Quarters and pursued the convoy which turned to the NE, looks like heading for Bonin or Volcano Islands.
Night was fairly dark, quarter moon, light fog, choppy seas so opted for a night surface attack. At 23:15 we were in position 5,000 yards off the port side of the convoy, which according to radar had five ships in a column and three in the starboard with one escort up front.
Closed to 3,000 yards off track and pointed bow towards the oncoming escort to minimize profile. All four Mark 14's in forward tubes were readied as were Mark 23's in stern tubes.
Dropping below, checked the PPI scope to confirm the situation. Then back to the bridge, scanning the dark night for our contacts, soon enough saw the bow wake of the escort and silhouettes of the large merchants trailing her.
As the escort moved on we slowly closed the distance while making a turn to port to keep our bow pointed at her, watching for an signs had been detected.Soon the escort made a wild jog our direction, making me question if was coming at us, but held firm, escort soon turned back and made a wide sweep to the starboard. We had made it, thus far!
Plot now had us 2,800 yards off the port column of the convoy, closing slowly.Via the TBT, spotted several large merchants in the convoy.I designated the lead as Target 1 and the next one in line as Target 2.Could tell Target 2 was smaller, but still large.Target 1 was a large, fat freighter.I decided three Mark 14's set for 13 feet on T1, and one set for 10 feet on T2, which should disable her.
We continued to creep towards the firing point.Soon the destroyer was jogging back in our direction, causing for tense moments but it turned around and patrolled ahead. The merchants were not fairly distinguishable in the TBT as we passed 2300 yards off their track.Double checked TDC data(Speed, AOB, Range, bearing) all bow tubes opened and ready.
All stop ordered, as we drifted to 1,950 yards from T1 placed TBT amidships on T2, got a final bearing and fired Tube 1 at her.Moved TBT to T1, placing crosshairs on her stack amidships.Entered new range, bearing, AOB.Send bearing and fired.Placed TBT on forward mast and fired, fired fourth bow torpedo after placing crosshairs on aft mast.
With torpedoes speeding toward target, began backing away slowly and preparing to make a run after impact. With some forward motion now on the boat and rudder swinging to starboard, we were nearly through our turn when the first torpedo impacted T2(medium freighter). The impact caused flash but no large explosions then a visible smoke cloud.I ordered flank speed to pull us through rest of turn and take us to WSW away from the convoy.Soon automatic tracer fire from other merchants was splashing around us, with a few lucky ones hitting with no damage. Then suddenly. Torpedo 2 hit the big lead merchant dead center causing a fireball as her boilers were blown out, the Torpedo 3 hit just behind the stack, and torpedo 4 hit forward of the aft mast.Soon a violent volley of secondary explosions fired off, lighting up the area with flames and explosions, she was obviously finished.
As we sped away deck gun fire from merchants was splashing around us, one coming too close and upon checking. The escort was speeding in fast.We were making 20 knots hellbent on getting away. A spotlight from one large merchant was shining in our direction and the escort continued to close in at just 5,000 yards away and closing.I switched to the rear TBT readied the Mark 23's in rear tube, set for shallow depth and aligned the stern until was pointing at the oncoming escort(thought to be a Momi Class PB but not confirmed) , ready for a "Down the Throat" shot if necessary.
Soon the Momi had closed to 3,000 yards but was not firing, she had an idea where we were, but did not have us yet. After a few minutes, she slowed and began to circle, dropping a few depth charges.(always loved how this behavior, which read countless times occurred in various books) , guessing we submerged. We pulled away to 8,000 yards and stopped.
The Momi had turned back.Dropping below, looked at radar, could see that the other ships had scattered, one contact remained stationary(T2, dead in water) and other was gone(T1 had broken in two and sunk) with the escort now nearing the wounded T2.
Looking at the situation, saw the need for a coup de grace to the mid sized freighter(T2) but it was risky with the escort now parked just a couple thousand yards away, apparently stationary and listening/watching. Bow tubes were being reloaded. If we tried to hit from starboard side we risked being sandwiched between the rest of escorts just few thousand yards off with plenty of deck guns and T2. If approached from port side for the shot, had to risk the escort.Taking a wide route at flank speed, we moved in from the NW/port side backing down at an angle(AOB would be 60 degrees) so could fire stern tubes and flee at flank speed if needed, while keeping respectable distance from escort.
Slowly backing down, T2 remained afloat according to radar with the enemy escort guarding.Time was now 0134, we were backing down but still 5,300 yards away, Mark 23's in stern tubes had range of 4,500 yards. On the rear TBT could somewhat make out the wounded vessel's silhouette and entered range, bearing, AOB, and speed(0) into TDC, activating the PK. Outer doors on two stern tubes were readied, torpedoes set for 10 feet.Decided would fire two fish to ensure a kill just in case, as would likely not have another shot.
Soon the range was at 3900 yards, close enough.Placed cross hairs just forward of admidships and fired one Mark 23. Then using the spread knob on TDC, set second fish to hit toward the stern.
We then put on some light headway and slowly turned out stern towards the escort, having TDC and fish ready for an emergency down the throat shot if needed.Soon, torpedo 1 hit, causing a nice explosion, finishing the ship. The second impacted after, ensuring she was finished.
As we sped away the Momi PB cranked up and began frantically searching, firing star shells and eventually dropping charges before settling down.During this interval all tubes were reloaded.Soon we noticed the Momi was stationary again and we were 9,000 yards away. The thought occurred to me, take out the escort, pursue the remaining 6 merchants unprotected, we had plenty of torpedoes after all.
We backed slowly towards the now practically stationary momi.Stern tubes were ready set shallow, two for the attack, two ready in case they come after, ready for the DTT shot.
We closed and coasted to 4,000 yard.Tubes opened, target info in TDC. Aimed crosshairs of torpedo one amidships and torpedo 2 just ahead of bow in case target sped up upon sighting the wake(if it did), to catch her.Fired both torpedoes just seconds apart and began slowly moving away.Torpedo 1 ran hot straight and normal, but two suffered a gyro failure obviously and jogged 20 degrees off track to starboard.
Soon the Momi's alarm sounded in the distance, spotlight on and attempted to speed away from its stationary stop when BOOM! torpedo impacted just forward of stern.Massive secondary explosions went off(depth charges likely) and ship was ablaze from bow to stern , already sinking by the stern!
We sped away and the Momi slipped beneath the waves, a series of explosions occurred underwater. We were now speeding towards the six, unguarded merchants to the NE!
Time was now 0240, crew was tiring, I was tiring.Decided one more attack before moving ahead, resting, and going for a dawn periscope attack.Ships were in a loose formation, zigging at slow/medium speed.Although unescorted, they were alerted and armed with large deck guns and autocannons.
Soon we were in position for a bow shot, with targets zigging we would have to get close. With TBT locked amidships on a large merchant, we waited for him to zig back towards us so that was essentially turning into the torpedo at time of impact. At just 2,000 yards away, fired three torpedoes. One and two ran normal, but three jogged to the starboard then went into a circle run! Immediately went ahead flank and turned to starboard to clear our tail from the torpedo. Unfortunately at such close distance, the merchant was alerted, illuminated us with spotlight and starshells, opened up with autocannons, raking my deck(two lookouts wounded). As we turned away, the fish came with few yards of our stern as we headed away at high speed, with shell splashes all around, both fish obviously missed due to target being alert. However, soon one torpedo impacted, scoring a lucky hit on a large freighter, a fire clearly visible on the bow in the distance but still underway. As we rushed away with shells roaring over and splashing, one lucky hit in our stern, holing the area of the after torpedo room. Needing to lick our wounds and assess damage, we withdrew, prepared to attack at dawn if possible.
Assessment of damage showed hull damage at 15 percent, 2 deck watchman seriously injured, minor injuries in the aft torpedo room.Batteries, stern tubes, and pumps damaged.Deciding it unrealistic and unsafe to continue and attack, namely if encountered enemy ASW vessels forcing a dive with hull compromised, decided to head for home.Arriving Midway 16 December 1943.
Credit for one NAGARA MARU(large size) and one BIYO MARU(medium size) sunk assigned as well as one Momi PB sunk. One uknown large freighter(likely NAGARA MARU) damaged.
Quite a first patrol back, not duration wise but had one action packed encounter.

I've decided to hang on to the game.
After so many awesome patrol logs, I shall try to write mine equaly well.
28th february 1942.
This is the 3rd patrol in this old lady. Even though she's not the youngest, I feel good. She is old but robust.
We left Surabaya at midnight and headed for our designated patroling area.
We never got there though, because at the 6th of march we spotted a japanese convoy. After cabeling the HQ, we got the order to focus the escorts. The conditions were perfect! The night was moonless and a slight swell helped us to conceal us.
So we went to periscope depth and started calculating the solutions.
We just recieved the new Mk. 14 Torpedos and rumors had it that something was not quite right. We had no idea what was in treat for us.
Launching all 4 torpedos, I targeted the destroyer escort and 2 freighters.
After 2 minutes, one explosion, the destroyer was a fireball. And all of a sudden, a huge fontain of water rose infront of us: the torpedo circled and exloded almost right next to us. The other torpedos never reached the target.
The tubes were reloaded and another salvo was fired.
None of the fishes hit the target, 2 of them exploded halfway towards the target.
Blast the Bureau of Ordnance! These things were as dangerous as the japs!
The convoy began to scatter, we reloaded one more time and fire 2 torpedos at a target about 600 yards away and the broadside of another freighter.
Two torpedos were duds, 1 hit the stern of the enemy ship and the other disapeared into the pacific. The problem was, the ship was still floating.
I waited untill the other ships moved along and out stricken prey refused to go down. So the boat was surfaced and the deckgun was manned.
After a couple of shots, she was going down and we engaged another ship that came to tow it.
And then a jap destroyer apeared out off this mist and started firing!
Crash dive! The water was shallow and we could only dive 98 feet before hitting the ground.
Sillent running! Head for deeper water.
And then there was this sound, the familliar Ping!. Sonar.
I kept looking up the ceiling, trying to make out the position of that basterd. It grew louder quickly, the time between the pings became shorter as the distance between the boat and the destroyer shrunk. Soon I could hear the screws. As she was right above us, we could hear the familliar splasing sounds. The sonar ping was gone, they were above us! Full ahead! The boat shaked as it accelerated, I prayed that we were quick enough.
Soon after, the boat was shaken by the pressure waves of the explosions.
Seaman Barstow was blown of his feet by the blast, but our trusty S-38 held shut. The jap was comming back! Back to 50 rpm on the engines!
The same procedure as before: as he was above us he threw his rocks into the sea and we ducked away from them. This went on for 2 hours, it was 1:30 in the night. The sonar man could no longer hear the jap, so we continued to head towards deeper water.
And then all of a sudden: ping!
He was back.
And so the dance starts all over! He goes above the boat, we go fast do dodge the depth charges. We go slow, he uses his sonar.
And then a big bang! It felt like the boat was punched, it stumbled and we could smell that the stern battery was ruptured!
Damage control got to work imediately and I thought of a new idea...
This time I decided we would stop the engines so we would make no sound.
It worked! He did not come back after the last attack run.
We stayed underwater till 0500 and surfaced shortly after.
We were all out of torpedos, so I decided to head back to Java.
Thre crew acted outstandingly and I will recommend some of them for a decoration.
And the Bureau of Ordnancee will recieve a long report that they will not forget!
And I got promoted and been given the command of a new Salmon class submarine, the USS Sturgeon!
And I hope that you enjoyed the thing I wrote.
And damn the Mk.14 Torpedos. These things are not good (yet) .

Possibly the shortest career I've ever had in SH 4.
TMO RSRD
100 realism, ex camera off.
USS Batfish June 1944, out of Fremantle, Australia.
Departed on June 7 with orders top proceed to Northern South China Sea off Hainan Island.
After topping off at Exmouth Gulf, transiting via Lombok Strait(dodging patrols I added, makes it exciting and challenging. ) . While transiting Sibutu Pass into the Sulu Sea, detected a convoy on radar, 6 ships and two escorts.Planned to make an attack and send a contact report, then proceed to area.
Dove at 1145 hours, positioned for a stern tube attack with Mark 18's. Targeted a large freighter(8,000 tons) from 2500 yards.Just as fourth fish left tube 10, convoy made a zig the torpedoes missed. The convoy was now about to run over top of me, I ordered 200 feet depth. As I passed 80 feet, heard a ships alarm sound and sonar reported a warship closing fast.As we passed 140 feet, pinging began from astern, to port. I ordered us to 412 feet, test depth.Pinging grew intense from two directions, now had two escorts(one Type C escort and one aux subchaser) closing in
After multiple runs I seemed to shake them, was forced to 575 feet though, then the type c(sounded like it) came roaring in and dropped a massive pattern, two close charges caused heavy damage. Bow tubes reported destroyed, flooding in forward torpedo room, compressor heavily damaged, periscope heads destroyed, radio severely damaged, forward batteries damaged, sonar damaged.
After a couple more runs had situation under control, was cruising at 600 feet when type c made another run.several charges were close.Lights went out, stern batteries damaged, forward batteries destroyed, flooding in control room and conning tower, more flooding in forward torpedo room, variosu equipment destroyed or heavily damaged, we were now taking a down angle and sinking below 650 feet.Emergency back power and orders for rise on planes stopped the boats descent momentarily but as heavy flooding occurred in forward torpedo room, we began to sink deeper, finally climbing back after blowing tanks.Eventually flooding was stopped in other compartments and we leveled off somewhat at 430 feet while repairs were conducted. Batfish was in trouble though, only 30 percent battery left, Much of equipment damaged, only 30 percent compressed air reserve. Then came the good news, escorts coming back for another run, with all the noise, both knew where we were. Each made a run right after another. Several close charges, caused flooding in control room again, destroyed the compressor. We again began to sink out of control despite all efforts.Only option was to blow ballast, hope could make a run on surface, diesels were untouched. Blowing the tanks, rose to 80 feet and stalled, then blew tanks again using last of compressed air and surfaced with 40 MM aft and forward manned, as well as 20 mm manned. The 5 inch deck gun forward was non operational as we discovered, destroyed in the depth charge attack.
both escorts were astern, one just 2000 yards away. Ordered flank speed, began firing at us and aft 40 MM went to work on the aux subchaser, causing an explosion on her fantail when depth charges were hit. As we sped away both were firing automatic fire and deck cannons, shell splashes landing dangerously close, as automatic fire hit the boat a few times.
We were only making 15 knots at flank speed.Noticed sub was riding low in water, this was due to heavy flooding. The aux subchaser was firing but not moving, apparently damaged. The type C was blasting away but circling.Shells roared overhead(using sounds from Fall of Rising Son, very nice sounds FX) and splashed in the sea.Soon one found it's mark, landing astern where he aft gun crew on 40 MM and 20 MM were. All three crewman KIA. Hull now compromised, no diving for us.Also noticed three lookouts were KIA before this, likely from automatic gunfire. An Ensign on bridge, and two lookouts in shears, all three KIA.
The Type C escort was now pursuing blasting away at just 3200 yards and closing. Riding low in water(water was being pumped out) , ordered new gun crews to the deck. Stern tubes still operational, one Mark 18 completed reloading. Put aft TBT and set up for a down the throat shot if needed.Meanwhile we were dodging shells, many were landing close.Fired aft 40 MM at the type C scoring a few hits which started a fire , the ship slowed, still firing as we finally picked up another 2 knots and slowly pulled away, dodging more shells as we headed north towards sulu sea away from the escorts.
The type c escort continued to fire but circled, burning but the fire died out soon . Finally, one shell landed close enough scoring a hit in the forward torpedo room, injuring many in compartment and causing heavy flooding, we began to sink lower in water.Shells continued to roar overhead, landed near but no more hit as we slowly opened the range.
Finally we were out of range and lost contact, exiting Sibutu Pass into the Sulu Sea. flooding eventually was controlled, water pumped.Clearly the patrol was over, now challenge was making it back to Fremantle via enemy infested waters, with no bow tubes operational, six key crewmen KIA, much of boat's key equipment destroyed.
Night fall we turned south through Sibutu Pass, into Celebes Sea and headed to Lombok Strait via Makassar Strait. Unable to dive, stayed on surface. An SD radar contact as entered Java Sea caused concern but stayed outside 10 miles.
Finally reached Lombok Strait, waited for nightfall and made a run at flank speed. Dodged the northern guard, but ran into a patrol boat in center, dodging it was tricky but managed, southern guard was way out of position and exited cleanly by 0400.
Arrived back at Fremantle on June 26, 1944. After docking, was informed my carreer was over as was relieved of duty.

Heartbreaker, one of those fickle lady luck days. Good luck, sighted big task force with a bunch of heavy cruisers. Bad luck they were running full tilt boogie, I was already behind and too far away, and they were heading into a shallow water harbor without slowing down. Just starting to set up a desperation low speed 6000 yard spread when a FUBUKI destroyer decided to cut through the task force, lady luck smiled and a FURATAKA heavy cruser rammed the can and got tangled up with it. They slowed down enough I was able to get within 3500 yards, fired a high speed spread, then the FURATAKA sped up, slewing the FUBUKI around to the side. One fish hit the FURATAKA, the resulting secondary explosion from the depth charges engulfed the FURATAKA, which followed suit with an explosion in the after magazine. Both sunk, but of course the way the game is set up I only got credit for the destroyer, not the cruiser.

Never made a full patrol with Donation Narwhal(that I recall) so decided to give it a run.
TMO+RSRD
RSRD "Hollywood Missions"(restores special missions)
plus my own modifciations to RSRD campaign(in progress)
map contacts on , external camera off 100 difficulty.
April 23, 1942- Pearl Harbor-USS Narwhal-
Ordered to insert an intelligent agent in Port Arthur, Manchuria, departing on April 26, 1942.
Departed Submarine base on a course for Midway for refuel. Upon refueling at Midway 4 days later, headed ENE at 13.5 knots.
While passing roughly 600 NM North of Wake Island, SD contact appeared at 10 miles and closing.Ordered a dive to 100 feet, came back to periscope depth to find a large flying boat(Mavis) about 4,000 yards heading NNW. Remained submerged until nightfall, traveling at 4 knots.Surfaced and charged batteries.
Began submerging after dawn, as boat was now in enemy waters. While submerged a at 1430 hours about 200 NM East of Sofu Gan, sound detected an enemy warship, possible submerged submarine(one of several I dded to campaign) . Never able to make contact. Went to 200 feet. Surfaced after dusk. Around dawn next morning, Sofu Gan was within sight.Continued for the East China Sea, submerged traveling at 4 knots until nightfall.
May 9, 1942-Dawn- Dove and began submerged transit of of strait between Yakushima Island and Kuchinoshima Island, to enter the East China Sea.
Around 1200, sound detected an enemy warship.Periscope observation confirmed a patrol type, possibly a Destroyer, which never came close. After clearing the strait, surfaced after dark and headed for Yellow Sea.
Continued daytime transit submerged, surfaced at night.
May 18, 1942, 30 miles SE of Port Arthur surfaced after dark and closed to 2,000 yards off shore, deploying agent aboard inflatable raft at 0200 hours. With enough fuel for two days patrol, turned west for Bohai Sea (added some light traffic to the area).
Just after dawn on May 19, while still surfaced smoke was spotted to the North East. Turned boat toward for contact and went to GQ. Soon could see had a lone mid sized freighter. Plot showed her heading for us, ordered a dive to 80 feet to close .Coming to scope depth, set up to close to 1,000 yards to attack.
Sound reported target slowed.Raised scope to see ship changed course, presenting a AOB of less than 10 degrees now, likey heading to leave the Bohai Sea.Ordered back emergency and left full rudder.Slowly but surely, Narwhal responded.
Next scope observation had target with a 35 degree AOB, at 765 yard and making 7.5 knots. Fired two Mark 14 torpedoes set at 10 feet. First one hit target, second one prematurely exploded just yards from target.Fired two more, with several degrees of spread set via the TDC's spread knob. Both hit, starting at fire on the ship and stopping her engines. Vessel now identified as a Biyo Maru class.
Ship soon began listing and several secondary explosions occurred.About 2 minutes later, lifeboats deployed, she was going down.
Sound reported a warship in area, began heading for deeper waters in central Bohai Sea.Soon a patrol craft was in area, we went to 100 feet and slipped away.
Patrolled North and West at periscope depth, spotted a sampan but did not attack. Also spotted a "Pete" float plane. Surfaced after dark to patrol and recharge batteries. Due to fuel shortage, decided to head for home. Shortly after reaching central Yellow Sea, ran into heavy clouds and fog, could see just a few yards in front of boat.Choosing to remain surfaced to keep batteries charged if needed, was moving along at 8 knots around 1400 hours when suddenly an enemy destroyer emerged CLOSE off port bow(no SJ radar set yet), heading west at moderate speed.Immediately turned to port at flank speed, enemy alarm sounded and automatic cannon fire tracers began flying our way.Narrowly avoiding a collision we snaked past her stern .DD turned to starboard, not firing main deck guns(assum too close?) but scoring hits with automatic cannons.Opened up on her stern area with aft .50 cal machine gun after calling for General Quarters during the turn. At flanks peed, we headed away and enemy DD's main deck guns opened fired, some splashes landing near but not hitting, soon we were out of visual contact due to fog and changed course back to south. Last seen the enemy DD was coming about to chase us down.We managed to escape, definitely a close call.
Back on course, weather cleared later in evening, dove to 100 feet until dark.Surfaced, charged batteries and entered the East China Sea. Near Quelpart Island, encountered two large junks. Ordered BATTLE SURFACE. Using deck guns and .50 cal, sunk them both. Dove at dawn , heading for the strait south of Kyushu, to exit he East China Sea.
Preparing to dive at dawn, a roving patrol of two DD's coming in sight, citing critically low fuel, decided not to attack and submerged, planning to transit the strait after dark.
Surfaced into clear, but moonless night. Went to Ahead Full speed, 0200, half way through the strait, spotted a gunboat guarding the strait, turned away and evading, exiting strait around 0400. Batteries went on charge, dove after dawn for submerged periscope patrol/transit. three patrol planes spotted throughout the day.
Deciding to maintain surface run after dawn, SD contact appeared and quickly closed.Ordered a dive, but plane was closer than appeared, and quickly closed in for attacked. As boat hit 84 feet, several bombs hit near by. No damage.Remained submerged during rest of day and for next several days, surfacing at night.
Clearing Empire waters, opted for surface transit. Flying boat (likely from Wake Island) appeared, forcing a dive and submerged transit rest of day. Continued towards.
June 11, 1942 250 miles from Midway, fuel critically low.Next day, reached Midway with just 2 miles of range left(according to navigator) before fuel was gone. For a minute, though would have to come in on battery lol. Note, this sub's most fuel efficient speed is NOT ahead standard(like other subs in TMO ) but is 8 knots.
Refueled and headed for Pearl Harbor arriving on morning of June 16, 1942.
Special mission accomplished, one ship(Hakusika Maru of 8,000+ tons, not the Biyo as previously identified) sunk.
Note:
Took screenshots but not showing up on my SH 4 folder.

I think I fixed most of my problems and I got to say, this game is a harsh mistress, but once you know how to treat it, you will be rewarded.
Patrol 6, May 22nd 1942, USS Skipjack (SS-184) orders were to head directly to convoy college and wait for further orders. We never got there though, because I intercepted an convoy. It was stormy night and my sonar officer picked up some merchant ships. Followed to investigate, found a convoy. The crew spotted the convoy from just 2000 yard.
We fired a torpedo at the biggest shadow and went to periscope depth.
The damn Mk. 14 Torpedos were still not working, premature explosions and duds were the fuel to keep my rage for the Buero of Ordonance burning.
Managed to sink one 4000 tonner with tw torpedo hits.
And then the familliar "ping" returned, tw Minekaze Destroyers were searching for the boat.
But I was lucky and the Torpedos hit and destroyed the targets. That were two enemy destroyers sunk. The path was clear and I decided to follow the sound contacts submerged.
That was a bad decision, because a escort heard us.
So we went down 190 feet and tried to shake him with silent running and our tango to dodge the depth charges.
Well, he was no fool and so we went deeper. 278 feet deeper, he still pinged the boat and my nerves would wear thinner with each "ping"
Then one depth charge hit the boat, nothing was seriously damaged, the pumps were back in action two minutes later my crew was trying to stop the flooding. I must say these american boats were quite durable. The stern torpedo room was flooded but we stayed at depth.
The deepest depth the boat reached was 295 feet.
In the early morning hours the flooding was still not under control so I decided to go to periscope depth to fight the escort.
That was a critical moment, because we were listing to stern the bow of the boat broke out of the water, I had to order ahead flank to stabilize the boat. But I was lucky again, two Mk. 14 torpedos turned the escort into a fireball.
The boat was submerged and I ordered to return to Freemantle.
With only two torpedos in the bow and one in the jammed stern tube, it was not worth the risk.
On the way back we got attacked by an float plane and some minutes later we picked up warships comming our way. And more merchants. Another convoy.
We waited for 5 hours at 160 feet for the convoy to pass.
And at the 7th of june, we were back in Freemantle.

TMO RSRD
100 dififculty..contacts on, cams off.
USS S-38.
Departed Cavite, Manila on 12/8/1941 with orders to reconnoiter Lingayen Gulf area. After doing so, heading North along Luzon Coast on morning of 10 December, orders to proceed and recon Appari Northern Luzon.
About 15 NM North of Lingayen Gulf, spotted many smoke trails over horizon.Closed until dawn, then dove to 100 feet, coming back to scope depth every 30 minutes to check. After a long approach, time was 0900, came to scope depth, had a convoy apparently anchored off coast preparing to land troops. 6-8 large ships in a single line at center with 12 escorts in a ring protecting the ships. Plot showed could close to 2500 yards from ships, stay just outside the screen, as getting in undetected was highly unlikely.
Ordered a dive to 200 feet, silent running in at a noisy(in s boat) 2 knots. After closing, came up for an observation at 0930 and was 4,800 yards from ships.Picked out the lead, a large merchant identified as Nagara Maru class.Slipped down to 100 feet and closed in slowly for a shot from 2500 yards with a 35 degree AOB. Mark 10 torpedoes set for shallow depth.
When plot showed were closing to firing point, came back to scope depth.Took an observation, set gyros, took a range reading.Dropped scope, opened outer doors. Scope up, now at 2500 yards. Just outside the escort screen, hoping to not be detected.Fired four torpedoes, two at middle of target, one bow mast, one stern mast.Dropped scope and began backing away slowly.
Soon heard an alarm sound, raised scope, torpedoes were close but had been spotted. One escort (subchaser) was now racing , 3 fish passed just ahead of her but number four slammed into her side, causing a massive explosion and fire, which blazed from bow to stern.Other three fish continued on as transports kicked up spray trying to get underway.Pinging soon started as other escorts began searching for us.
Two fish missed astern of the Nagara Maru but one slammed into her stern. With escorts closing, forced dive for 200 feet. Avoiding depth charges and persistent hunters until 1600 when sound contacts disappeared. We came back to scope depth. No vessels in sight. A debris field(love the mod) was found in location where the escort was hit(credit awarded) . The transport apparently limped away.Attempted to locate the landing force, but unable.Proceeded toward Aparri.
A large flying boat(MAVIS) bombed us just before 0700(no SD radar) but hanks to lookouts and crash dive, escaped with minor damage.
Closed Aparri on morning of December 11, no enemy activity in area.Surfaced after dark, recharged batteries. Around 0300 message received to patrol "South of Formosa" .Headed North between Fuma and Camuguin Islands.Came to bridge at 0600 and while searching spotted smoke trail off starboard. In the morning haze just ahead of smoke, could see light whisp of smoke and outline of what appeared to be a large warships, possibly a heavy cruiser.Called crew to GQ and closed on surface, taking advantage of the dark skies.
Contact report sent.Luckily, this force what appeared to be a CA with three escorts was moving at just 8 knots, allowing us to move ahead for a nice set up. finally at 0648, dove 6000 yards to port off the CA's track and closed in. Approaching a slow speed and 100 feet, coming up briefly for scope checks.Plotted ship at 8.7 knots on course of 015.Plot showed we would reach a firing position of 1100 yards, not as close as would like but would work.
0800 raised scope, target was close enough now, she was not a cruiser but a Chitose Class Seaplane Carrier, 9,000 tons. With one minesweeper(who's black smoke gave the TF away) and two subchasers escorting.Minesweeper was leading, subchasers about 800 yards off each side.
Continued to close, next observation showed port escort was off checking behind, freeing us to get closer.
Outer doors opened, now at 1,000 yards, time to fire. Torpedoes set for 10 feet, 5 feet, 10 feet, and 5 feet respectively. Speed 8 knots, AOB 80 degrees. Put wire of scope on center of target and fired two, then fired one at the bow and another just behind, in case she sped up when spotted torpedoes.
Raised scope to view impact as torpedo run time was up.Alarm sounded, torpedoes spotted by the target, too late, all four slammed into the target causing a fire and then two massive secondary explosions. She soon took a list. All three escorts now racing in for me, dove for 200 feet.
What followed was an intense and unusually accurate depth charging for this point of the war, these escorts were not pushovers. Endured 45 minutes of depth charges, several close ones, destroyed one periscope, damaged another, heavily damaged trim pump, forward batteries, minor flooding in control room. Sonar damage, radio damaged.
After some dodging, they finally seemed to lose me but hunted me until nearly nightfall. Batteries were at 25 percent when surfaced.Found a debris field where target sank. Awarded credit for the seaplane carrier, 9,000 tons.
Conducting repairs(topside heavily damaged, one periscope head destroyed, TBT destroyed, deck gun heavily damaged) headed NW to patrol off Luzon and South Formosa.
Crash dive at dawn to avoid a MAVIS flying boat. Bombs fell distant. Several days of submerged patrol located nothing.
Finally on night on December 17, found a enemy merchant in the dark.Dove for periscope attack.Sunk a Zimbu Maru. With one torpedo left, headed for Manila arriving on 19 December 1941.
Short but fun patrol. S boats are a real challenge at this point.

So I my first patrol in the Wahoo, got a patrol order to operate in the marshal islands for 24 hours, I didn't have any contacts, So I decided to sneak into truk.
And guest what i found, a shokaku class carrier and a yamato class battleship.
So i decide to fire a few at them, the shokaku sank with in 3 torpedo hits. The yamato was stubborn and it took almost all of my torpedoes to sink it, and to top it off escaped unharmed. so basically i kinda shortened the war.:D

Been patrolling and tracking some convoy and failling (my very first patrol ever) i kept losing the convoy, couldn't get within range to attack them.
Then i became frustrated and decided to head to the Luzon Strait where i found a small fleet of japanese warships.
Felt sooooooooo good sinking my very first destroyer.

I survived the depth charging that followed with no damage.
Today was a good day.
So I got this convoy in radar, early 1941 inbound to Manila. Man, why would all the IJN escort fleet is protecting 6 ships? It is only one medium troops carrier, one T2 tanker, a CL, a 7k tons and a small freighter. I mean, back in the days, would this have been possible??
Just look how many escorts there are, and radar is not spotting the other half. :o

USS Tang attacked a convoy in June 1944 off Nagsaki, had 6-8 merchants and 16 escorts so yes it did occur.
Game wise. What mods are running? If night is dark(well dark by SH 4 standards ugh) close in close as dare and in range of torpedoes and let them fly or make submerged approached, see if can slip through the screen submerged under thermal layer, then when clear come to scope depth. not easy but possible.

January 1944
Fremantle, Australia
USS Jack-Gato Class.
TMO RSRD 100 realism Cams off, contacts on.
Although I added appropriate tanker traffic in East China Sea and planned to patrol where Jack actually did patrol in Feb-March 1944, was assigned to Celebes Choke Point South of Davao Gulf.Knowing this is a target rich area and wanting to test the convoys I modified(upped skill level of escorts to Vet, too many were set low) and made sure tankers were carrying fuel as a loadout(not sure if an error or was on purpose but a lot of tankers in RSRD departing these oil rich territories do not carry fuel, I feel they would have been so those departing do carry fuel now, blow up very nicely as loaded out tankers did when hit)
Departed Fremantle on 17 January 1944, refueled at Exmouth Gulf few days later and headed for Lombok Strait. Entered Lombok Straight afer dark on 22 January 1944, dodged 4 patrols vessels total and exited around 0300. Headed up Makassar Straight. Report of a convoy departing Balikpapan while transiting strait, headed for likely course but never made contact.Continued to patrol area. Dove to avoid several air patrols en route.
1/28/1944 reached patrol area, maintained surface patrol, diving to avoid planes and two corvette type patrol vessels. Around 0800 on 2 February 1944, radar contact on a convoy in the choke point, heading west.Went to GQ, closed at high speed. Radar revealed three ships in single column with three escorts. Dove around 0845 and began to close. Once near track, up scope for a look, had three tankers(one medium, two small, with medium tanker in lead) making 11 knots with two aux subchasers and one Momi patrol boat escorting.
Readied all tubes with plans to fire three Mark 14's at lead medium tanker and two at the middle small tanker.Saving one to make a follow up shot on last one if situation permits.0904 fired torpedoes. Raised scope, heard an alarm sound. The tankers spotted the wakes but it was too late for the medium tanker(Buzyun Maru), all three slammed into tanker, setting her afire but not a massive explosion as tankers tend to do when loaded out with fuel or oil, (westbound tanker must not be loaded with fuel, returning from a run) . Other two missed the small tanker(Haruna Maru) which was able to barely avoid them. With the Buzyun Maru sinking, set up to fire the last torpedo at the Haruna Maru, which was closing in with a nearly 0 AOB. The Momi PB was rushing my way, but was far off as had been sweeping far to the starboard of convoy when attack occurred. Fired tube 6 with it's Mark 14 which hit, but did not exploded. No dud reported, torpedo did not arm.Haruna was boiling in towards our scope.Ordered a dive to 300 feet, silent running.Passed 90 feet as Haruna Maru crossed over.
Soon was at 300 feet when pinging began.First few salvos were ineffective but one escort seemed to get a fix on the Jack, (sounded like the momi) . Soon charges were exploding close. Went to 350 feet, next few salvos were well above. Seems had escaped when suddenly the momi roared in and dropped a pattern, which were close and caused minor damage to pumps and compressor as well as forward battery.
Surfaced about 1300 , radar showed one escort(assume) about 6 miles, sitting still listening. Surfaced and headed on last course of convoy.Soon made contact. Pull ahead, dove and closed in, turned in for stern torpedo attack with Mark 18 electric torpedoes. Both small tankers were making 6 knots and zigging. The port escort was off looking for sub, leaving the entire side exposed. One tanker zigged away so unable to hit it, target next with two Mark 18''s around 1600 hours. Both hit, tanker caught fire but did not exploded. Tanker soon sunk by the bow. both escorts rushed in but never located the Jack.
Surfaced for another end around and waited for dark for night surface attack.
Night was quarter moon with medium clouds and light fog/haze.
Closed to 2,000 yards off port side of the convoy and it's lone small tanker(Haruna Maru) . Fired two Mark 14's. One hit setting her afire. Soon star shells filled air and escorts were rushing toward me as rorared off into the night at 20 knots. The Momi PB had us and was closing , some shell splashes landing in distance.
Readied to fire stern tubes for down the throat shot but the Momi lost us in the night. Setting off in distance. The tanker was wounded but not finished, limping away at a plotted 4 knots. Ended around and by 0130 was again in position to attack. From 2100 yards, fired two Mark 14's, both hit, finishing off the tanker. Sped away into the night, escorts trailing but never spotted us.
Patrolled next few days avoiding planes and patrol vessels.
Around 1000 on February 7, radar made contact with another convoy West of Celebes Choke point in Celebes Sea, heading east .Radar showed three ships with two escorts. Closed in and dove off projected path. Look with scope revealed three large ships and two destroyers escorted. Large ships turned out to be three large tankers(!) and two full fledged DD's(possible Mutsuki class but not sure). Convoy was making 12.5 knots heading NNW. On next observation, convoy zigged and would run over top of us. Went to 100 feet and sped up, would get out from under them and shoot one with Mark 18's in stern tubes, get the other two in follow up attacks.
Back to scope depth, check with scope showed targets coming on nicely at 12.5 knots heading West. Plot showed would fire from 1800 yards. All three large tankers positively identified as NIPPON MARU(10,000 tons) tankers. Tubes opened, fired all four fish at the middle large tanker, down scope.Raised scope, which broke the surface just as torpedo one hit amidships, torpedo 2 hit under the stack aft, which caused a large explosion, setting off a massive secondary explosion, yep this one was loaded with fuel. Other two fish hit but were redundant hits, as tanker was a fireball and destroyed.
Both destroyers roared in quickly, obviously dealing with A team.First run was not effective but second run by second DD, hit close as settled at 300 feet.Flooding in stern torpedo room, damage to pumps, compressor, batteries, stern tubes. Secured from silent running, put DC party to work to stop flooding. More runs occurred as we went to 350 feet, none close. Just as flooding was stopped in stern, a close pattern hit, pumps damaged even more, flooding in control room. Jack sunk to 400 feet before could regain control with ahead standard speed.
After fighting to avoid more charges, flooding in both compartments stopped, water eventually pumped out and went up to 375 feet, silent running.
Some twisting and turning confused the DD's which stayed close but never located us again for sure. Charges were dropped multiple times in distance. One persistent DD stayed behind and hunted for 6 hours total before moving away, allowing Jack to escape. Surfaced at dusk and raced down last known course of convoy.
Established contact around with remaining tankers at 2040. Moon was brighter and no fog but dark enough for night surface attack. Closed on the large tankers now making 11 knots heading West now South of Davao Gulf, bound for Palau most likely.
Both destroyers back in formation. Closed to 3,000 yards and fired three Mark 14's at each tanker. Each tanker exploded in large fireballs, turned and sped away. One DD rushed into our former location and began dropping depth charges. Once he stopped completely to listen, backed down, ready to fire two remaining mark 18's from stern torpedo room. fired both from 3500 yards. When fish were 1,000 yards away, DD sped up and turned North, unaware of the wakeless fish heading his way. With all tankers destroyed and one Mark 14 left in bow tubes, headed for Fremantle via Banda Sea, to Ombai Strait. Dodging patrol planes and vessels, arrived on 17 February 1944.
Total of 6 tankers for 38,000+ tons. Not a bad patrol.

TMO RSRD
100 realism no cams, contacts on.
USS Jack
Running my current career and testing hings I've added to TMO RSRD
Departed Fremantle on April 2, 1944 for patrol area off Luzon in East China Sea. After fueling at Exmouth Gulf, chose to make transit via Ombai Strait(Timor), via Banda and Molucca Sea's, up East coastal of Philippines, Enter via Bashi Channel in lieu of running the Lombok/Balabac route this time.
Arrived in patrol Area on April 20, 1944. No contacts other than diving for planes. I added the Take Ichi convoy and an Ultra concerning this important convoy(Ultra did not show up properly) but also a contact report on evening of 24th showed up. I raced North towards Luzon Straits(Convoy College) and made radar contact around 1300 on April 25.
Attempted to get into position for submerged attack and had a nice set up but after run in, came to scope depth, could see smoke was in different direction.Sound and then radar showed they had zigged. Surfaced and raced , planning to attack on next zig, which should be about dusk.
Once again as prepared to attack, was thwarted as an enemy escort making a wide sweep preventing us from closing. Decided(as Jack was forced to do in real life, on a night surface attack). On the next zig, was in a good position and closed in toward starboard side of convoy. Counted 15 ships in two columns in main body witth 13 escorts(!) on radar. Made inside screen and ready to shoot from 3700 yards on two very large troopships. when suddenly a Kamikaze class destroyer turned turned us at high speed. No way could have seen us from this distance, guessing he has radar(did not have boat equipped with radar warning equipment yet) . Reset TDC as targets while still making a medium speed, were zig zagging. However while waiting for ideal firing time. A shell splashed close by. Forcing a crash dive. Before sub went under, sent final bearing to TDC and fire. Using spread knob to spread out the fish.
All six fish sped away as we went under and to silent running, as escorts closed. External cam off by soon heard a torpedo impact and many seconds later, another one. Two out of six impacted something. Soon we were at 300 feet, taking a pretty intense depth charging. Forcing Jack to 375 to get under the large patterns being laid down. Some close ones caused flooding in after torpedo room, damaged stern tubs, compressor, pumps, diesels and electrics as well as batteries. Flooding was soon controlled. After about two hours, escorts lost contact. Surfaced and began the run back to get into position. Obvious we would have to fire from long range(as Jack did in real life). Set up aft next zig, closed to 7100 yards and set up to fire. Fired at center of first column, aiming for large troopships, zigging making 10.5 knots.Turned for stern shot(although number 8 torpedo tube was not operational yet) and fired three more.
After a long torpedo run, three hits in quick succession, set the large ship on fire and from TBT, could see it settling in the water. Two stern torpedoes impacted a large ship in second column as well. Soon, the large troopship was sinking(later identified as Kotobuki Maru 18,000 tons). Other was on fire but not sinking. Not bad for such long range shooting on zigging targets Raced away and reloaded last four bow tubes and my the the operational stern tubes.
Prepared for a follow up night surface attack but was spoiled by convoy zigging away and alert radar equipped escorts forcing me to pull away in lieu of diving.
As dawn approached dove deep and closed in at high speed, planning to shoot from 1,000 yards. All torpedo tubes now operational. After reaching predetermined point, sound checked, came to scope depth. Convoy had moved a little sounth, I was 2400 yards from desired point and an enemy escort was near.I went deep but soon he was close and started pinging. Other escorts closed in, unleashing a serious attack.
Rudder transmission was knocked out, leaving turning ability limited, batteries, pumps, compressor damaged, stern tubes damaged. Prop prop shaf damaged.Forced 400 feet and eventually 450 to get out from under. Finally around 0700, lost them. Crew was exhausted with fatigue levels high and damage to repair. Surfaced and prepared to shadow convoy and attack later in the day or in evening. Stern tubes were revealed to be destroyed and rudder transmission repairs were taking a long time. Lost contact with convoy.
Headed back to patrol area and made contact with a southbound convoy that night. With just four bow torpedoes left and stern tubes non operational, this was last attack before heading home. Convoy was 10 ships and 4 escorts. Moved in on surface after dark. Flank escort forced to fire early but targeted a large merchant(NAGARA MARU), scoring four hits, she quickly sank. We raced away with Type C escort in pursuit, but was able to pull away.
Arriving in Balabac Strait found some fishing boats which opened fire on us, obviously pickets. Quickly dispatched them with 40 MM and 4 inch deck gun fire. While making the transit, encountered an armed tug on patrol. Closed in quietly in darkness and at 3,000 yards, opened fire, setting it ablaze and quickly sinking her.
Made run for Lombok Strait arriving. Evaded North patrol but was constantly hounded by a fast moving vessel which soon revealed to be an enemy PT boat, which reported us as the South guard was on radar and moving towards our location. Seas were heavy so only manned 40 MM guns turned towards the PT boat which shined a spotlight on us and opened fire with automatic weapons. Scored hits on the PT with 40 MM guns, causing large explosions and she sank quickly. Avoided the in rushing patrols and exited the South of Lombok Strait before dawn. Forced to dive multiple times due to air patrols after dawn.
Arrived at Fremantle few days after. few screenshots I remembered to take.

Cool beans, man... How did you try to do the Ultra? via the contact stuff for the group in the MIS file, or a message generated with Trigger and Event stuff?...

Cool beans, man... How did you try to do the Ultra? via the contact stuff for the group in the MIS file, or a message generated with Trigger and Event stuff?...
The text file titled "messages" in the campaign file. I was told could add it there, would appear at date and time. I must have did something wrong as it did not arrive(want to figure that out before release) as the other messages do in RSRD advising of convoys etc. The contact report(shows on map and in the text box above) did arrive 3 days into the voyage as planned.Sure you are aware you set that in the properties section of the random group under the "Contact Automatic Report". Set by minutes, so put the number of minutes that equals three days since it's departure which put the convoy in Luzon Straits area. Probability set to 100% I believe.
This convoy and the one Tang attacked on June 24 that I added are a lot of fun but may have to make some changes. For some reason some of the new ships from FOTRS have a hard time maintaining station, a lot of moronic behavior as opposed to the "native" ships.
Tough choice , because it's nice having different targets to shoot at besides the same 6 or 7 merchants.

I've been experimenting along similar lines as you are, for keltos01 and the Climb Mount Niitaka, and I'm encountering similar issues. I'm not sure if it's "environmental", or something with the settings in the ships themselves. I haven't gotten that deeply into it yet. I want to try to find something "concrete", you know? - SIM files?? It seems to be ships' physics, but I don't know. Something that works reasonably well in FotRSU, but not outside of it... But the game really is full of balancing acts, and not having the documentation that the devs had, we don't have the ins and outs, so, "experimentation" is the word of the year, or however long it takes...
As for faking the Ultra messaging, I was going to try several ways concurrently in a single MIS file with several RGG in it, in the campaign folder, emptying all the other Campaign files out of there, other than the necessities. Then see if the "ReportPosMin=" and "ReportPosProbability=" working with the "HighPrioContact=" (or not), generates a strong enough report (it'd just be in the little text box where crew dialog shows, or whether I'd use a Trigger / Event in the MIS file to generate an actual prompt and "Radio Message" that would pop-up on the screen, or maybe a "normal" message from the "messages.txt" file that you get a prompt about, but doesn't open, or maybe use a combination of some or all of them... Does it appear then that the "messages.txt" stuff does hit when the date / time are encountered? Have you tried a "Save / Load" of the mission and see what that does to the message that way?...
Ratz, sorry mods, we're doing this in the Reports thread... I'll start another thread tomorrow Bubblehead1980, and we'll discuss this fun kind of stuff in it...

Can I ask what mod do you use, which give a name to the sunk ships? Like in the SH3 Commander.
It's my own ship pack I put together to use in TMO/RSRD.Ships from FOTRS, renamed plus ships from Miner's ship pack 1.
The "Kotobuki Maru" is the Conte Verde Liner. I simply copied, renamed, and added it. Japanese renamed the Conte Verde Kotobuki Maru in late 42. While not an actual part of the Take Ichi Convoy in real life, I added two to represent the large troopships that were part of the 15 ship+13 escort convoy and add to importance.
I plan to release the ship pack since it's required for my forthcoming upgrade to RSRD.

TMO RSRD USS Drum War Patrol 3
100 difficulty. Cams off, contacts on.
Order to patrol Philippine Sea in support of Operation Forager(invasion of Mariana Islands) . departed June 1, 1944 from Pearl Harbor. Refueled at Johnston Island. Headed en route to area at 12 knots to arrive by 6-17-1944 as ordered.
Arrived in area night of June 16th and began patrolling within 50 NM of assigned coordinates as ordered.
June 18- 2004 hours:Radar contact made with large group of ships moving East at high speed. Closed and dived off track at 2150 hours, avoiding the forward destroyer screen.
After a "high speed" run of 6 knots at 350 feet, came to scope depth quietly to find myself in middle of a Japanese task force. 5 or so large columns roughly 3500 yards between ships. Heavy cruisers, escorts carriers, battleships. Soon the large silhouette and pagoda mast structure of a battleship caught my attention in the setting sun so went to 100 feet and paralleled course between the two columns. Went deeper to avoid a marauding destroyer.
Came back to scope depth after 10 minutes, could see the large battleship in scope now at 7,000 yardsand in perfect position to set up on a Yamato Class Battleship. Several observations and speed had slowed from 20 to 12 knots, but no zigging, not alerted. Set all 6 Mar 14's in forward tubes for 25 feet and Mark 18's in stern tubes as well. Next observation a plane was spotted, dipped down to 100 feet, then back up.Opened outer doors as TDC data checked perfect.Came to port to line up for a shot, 1000 yards off port side would be the firing point.
Fired 6 Mark 14's from exactly 1000 yards. The Yamato BB attempted to evade once spotted the wakes but unable, all six torpedoes hit home. Immediately turned to bring stern tubes around. The battleships smoking, slowed to 4.8 knots. Fired all four stern torpedoes. Went to 100 feet, reloading tubes while coming about for another bow shot. Before torpedoes hit, plane dropped two close bombs and sound had a distant DD roaring in.
3 of four Mark 18's hit the the target. While at flank speed now attempting to overtake the slow moving ship(going on sound) . Came back to scope depth. Discovered a second Yamato Class BB trailing the one just torpedoed, coming up fast, suddenly turned towards us, would run us over, forced a dive to 100 feet.Listened as second Yamato roared overhead.
Back to scope depth after Yamato had cleared, we had now pulled ahead of the first Yamato class BB. Would have to hurry, Two DD's from two different directions were rushing in. Luck was on Drum's side, as seas began to pick up, they were coming close, dropping charges but not locating me just yet.
Fired more torpedoes. All hitting and causing large explosions. The Yamato stopped her engines and listed developed. The Destroyer's rushed in pinging, forcing us deep. A few depth charges dropped, just one or two close.
We had fired 15 torpedoes with 14 hits.About 15 minutes after last torpedo hit. A massive series of explosions were heard.Drum was at 400 feet and about 4000 yards from last marked position of the target. Could soon hear breaking up noises and more explosions. Ship reported as sunk. Coming back to surface, could see see her burning, sinking, and large debris field. Went to 300 feet and evaded destroyers.
Surfaced but unable to locate task force as had sped away.
Continued patrol in area, contacted a Task Force on June 19, 1944 around 2000 hours but numerous planes prevented closing on surface. One dropped bombs, prompting two destroyers to coming hunting. Attempted down the throat shot but DD managed to avoid. The pair never came close with charges but hunted us for 5 hours before heading away at high speed.
Upon surfacing ordered to remain in area until 0000 hours on June 20 then return to base. Set course for Pearl Harbor. Arrived on June 8, 1944.
Fun patrol. Believe it's only second time in all years played RSRD had a real shot at Yamato. Tough target.Definitely lucked out being in right place at right time.

Captain Hammered

'Allo!
I first posted this down below as an independent thread, before I saw this story post thread. Yep - I'm blind. :D
Anyway; I've moved it here to the proper place for stories, so here it goes: :)
Ohhhh Skimmers are such boneheads!
...Not that my own tactics portrayed a particularly scintillating genius. ;) MAN I wish I'd grabbed a screenshot but I just got attacked by two of the dumbest destroyers I've ever seen.
Ever since dawn I've been stalking a juicy convoy E of Java: a couple of tankers and a mix of light and medium freighters; about 8 targets total. They are escorted by a trio of destroyers; each commanded by a Captain who is clearly not the brightest Rising Sun in the Imperial Navy.
Hey - I survived; I get to laugh at them. ;)
Shortly before dawn I'd picked up the sound trace of a convoy heading East; I aimed in that direction, went to flank and pursued in moderate early morning haze and calm seas. Searaven performed with her usual superb response, leaping after the enemy like a bloodhound. By 8 we'd spotted the convoy - or more accurately the trailing escort. As is my habit I try to draw these schmoes off by staying on the surface then diving at the first shot - sometimes they forget their duty and try to kill me leaving the convoy alone.
Well, they didn't do that; they hung around for a bit then returned to the convoy - by that time I was end-running around the target at breakneck pace; getting well in front by about 1500. This is where I made my mistake: the reef was just to the East and I'd paused to take readings in exactly the wrong spot. The escorts came into view before I could get out of range; I wound up trapped on the reef (117.2 7.8) with the whole shebang chugging right over my head.
I was soon spotted, and over came the destroyers to wreak massive destruction on my poor frail little boat.
Destroyer #1 (Curly) came in with a bone in his teeth; I watched the sound contact sweating. I threw the rudder hard over at the last second; Curly roared overhead, dropping depth charges.
He missed.
His charges did however detonate on the reef; blowing his bloody stern off. :haha:
He stayed floating for a couple of minutes then sank in a gloriously ignominious fashion; bow pointed rather fetchingly at the sky.
Larry came by a few minutes later - this time right up my rudder. I twisted Searaven to port, sending SS-196 around the bow of one of the tankers. Larry had to take a wide line, came around and hammered me - I took some mild damage; my deck gun is wrecked - and HE gave himself a lethal colostomy as well; sinking about halfway beneath the waves while 8 ships' worth of Japanese merchant sailors watched and shook their heads sadly.
Moe's still back there trying to catch up with NO idea what the heck just happened. I imagine he'll be saying "Whoops" when he sees the burning remains of his two colleagues ahead - and the burning wreckage of the convoy shortly after. ;) Just an hour to nightfall - I'm down to 50% battery but come nightfall my boys are going to have a happy sinkfest; this poor widdle convoy is all by its wonesome. :D
Cheers!

Again, welcome everybody, I'm new on the forum :ping:
Here is my little story from my new campaign vanilla SH4, Patrol 1
So, I decided to start new campaign. Nothing unusual. I had to decide Captains name. I decided to get Tambor class and Captain name from first captain of USS Tautog (One of the best submarine on Pacific due to WW2, also stationed on Pearl during attack). So I named my captain - J. H. Willingham.
I started a new campaign and what happend? Game set my sub name to USS Tautog :D
First war patrol - Mission - Agent insertion to Osaka. No problem there. Went to Midway on full ahead, then ahead slow to Japan waters. About 50-100nm from Osaka I got my first merchant contact. Standard procedure, periscope depth, battlestations, periscope up. Made all my calculations on map, and waited for target. Identified as Large Modern Composite. 3 tubes open, torpedo depth set to 24 (In book there was 28.9ft) due to rough sea also switched to "contact". Fire 1, 2, 3. Wait, and wait. Good positions of torps, aaaand? What happend? All 3 torpedoes went under ship! What the heck? Merchant spotted torps and started evasive manuevers. I shoot another 3 but it was too late. All 3 missed again. I lost my 6 torps on my first target! I was so mad, ordered surface the boat, and do things with thing that always work. After 10 shots of my 4'50", she wasn't so happy as she was after evading torps :haha:
But still mad due lost of 6 torps.
Later, after insertion on Osaka (I did this on nightime, safer due to land artillery), I met small modern freighter on Tomogashimasuido Strait which was enter to the port. Battlestations, shoot two torps (I needed one but as went later it was good decision due first one was a dud). I wanted to see his captain face "Ahhh finally safe, 10 minutes and we are at the land... TORPEDOES PORTBOARD!!!" Kaaboom, on the midnight such a big explosion :arrgh!:
After leaving Osaka and Kiisuido Bay I got orders to went to the East China Sea for patrol. Good, because I thought it's the end of orders, I wanted to stay at Philiphines sea and sink some more merchants. Went to East China Sea. Sunk 3 merchants. End of patrol, let's get out from here boys! After passing Riukiu Islands I spotted Huge European Liner with escort of... 4 DDs! 4 Akizuki escorting one merchant? That must be an officer ship! I had only last 4 aft torpedoes. So this had to be accurate shot, no other chance! Dove to 230 to close without beeing spotted, then periscope depth, used TDC, fast calculating, all 4 went away. All 4 hits, no duds! She was sinking! :arrgh!: All 4 DDs were confused, didn't even know from where torps were launched. So to leave undetected I set 300 ft depth. But, I didn't noticed that I had 30% hull damage due last aircraft bomb... At 280 I had a flooding... That can't be true! :wah: But hopefully after that liner sink I saved the game. It was because my stupidity and no knowledge about Tambor specs. Now I know that red line is Crush Depth with undamaged hull... I just couldn't leave it on first patrol, sorry :O:
I went back undected and plotted course to the Midway and then full ahead to the Pearl. I got 9 merchants with about 69000 tons. But I also damaged patrolling Akizuki. Nice beggining of the war :D I also got Medal of Valor.
That's my little story from first war patrol after getting back to the game. Maybe I write some more if I get alive :haha:

My First Campaign Battleship!
Had been patrolling the mouth of Kii Suido for days with some mild, single target successes. A lone destroyer had been sent out to try to hold us down or scare us off. They were easily evaded and after a time, they moved off to the NW. While we were monitoring his departure, and by accident, I picked up a large convoy on the hydrophone exiting Kii Suido. We pointed our nose at them and as luck would have it, they steamed directly at us. As they got closer, individual screws could be picked out. There was not a single merchant among the dozen or so warhips. The task force spread across 30 degrees of the hydrophone dial.
It was very dark but eventually a Fuso Battleship could be distinguished as the closest target. Purely by accident, the escorts passed harmlessly to either side as we chugged along at a silent and safe 2kts at peri depth trying to head off the Battleship.
Frantic Speed, distance and heading was calculated with my shaking hands. I had my 90 degree setup and my type 10s would be within range with just a short run. All torps fore and aft were set to run just under the keel with mag detonation. The plan was to fire a four spread from the bow and then turn and add two more either at the fuso or, if it was going down, anything near it.
Despite having my scope up way too much, not a single ship raised an alarm.
As she passed through the cross hairs, we fired an in-line balistic spread of four from the bow to rake her broadside. Because of the proximity of other ships in the formation, I didn't want to crank the rpms for my 180 to bring the aft tubes to bear. This made the turn around agonzingly slow. The nail biting was interrupted as three of our four fish hit home. Not sure if the first was early and crossed her bow or the last may have ran deep. The burning battleship rolled heavy towards us and sank almost peacfully with a slight stern-first settle.
All hell broke loose and I lost my nerve for the stern tubes. Imagining a horde of escorts headed my way, we zeroed the rudder and took her deep. Turns out I could have taken a stern shot since the escorts appeared to have almost no idea where I was. They never over-ran me. Three buzzed around for forty minutes or so and then they all hi-tailed it back to the formation. We were alone on the surface, charging batts approx 1 hour after firing.
My first battleship in a campaign! 34 thousand tons ought to get me a new shiny boat and a promotion!
It must have been disheartening to them to suffer a loss basically at their front door before they'd even really got started. Thoughts of their lady friends and a hero's send off cut short by the sight of one of theirs gowing down in flames in home waters--Not the way for them to start a mission.
Again, a lone destroyer approaches from the straight. He bee-lines me and makes a depth charge pass. With plenty of warning, we had max depth, silent running and easily scooted out from under the charges. A slow crawl away to night and safety.
With an inventory of only three torps aft, we round Wakayama's southern peninsula and head NE to run up the Japanese coast toward Tokyo. With any luck we'll snag a loner and then head to Midway and Pearl to pick out our new shiny boat!
--No big shakes for you vets but for me this was a big night! I have recently gone to 'no map updates' so this was doubly exciting to have such a success with the new challenges.

An image from the mod FOTRS Ultimate v 0.63 that I thought was interesting.
It seems some things in life never change. I played SH4 YEARS and years ago. Came back a couple of weeks ago and got it running on win10 WITH YOUR HELP. Then i got it modded up WITH YOUR HELP. All the while I've been practicing and learning. Sub school training. Quick missions. YouTube tutorials.
Everything's working like a charm and I've remembered playing from years ago. Add to that Rockin Robbins "fighter avoidance" vid, several Dick O'Kane vids, some Cromwell attack vids and I think I'm ready to go.
The quick missions go so well my crew decides to "stay with me" as I go to my campaign assignment. I mod up with FOTRSU and we're off.
The first thing I notice is I'm not avoiding these fighters as well as I did in training. The crew notices as well. Every time I get notice of a fighter contact, he's on me before I can get to radar depth. EVERY TIME.
Deep in Japanese territory, I cease use of "time compression" to see if FOTRSU might be letting them get too close before switching to "1x" real time.
Nope that's not it. And I really didn't think it WAS because I'd used time compression in training and gotten below well before any fighters spotted us. Hmmm. Gotta figure this out cause we're getting more and more damage and the crew is really starting to grumble under their breaths. I can't come down on them too hard though. I'm grumbling as well. And I'm staying up late at night trying to figure out why we're getting so beat up by fighters that should never see us. Dang it must be this more realistic FOTRSU. One lucky explosion and we won't have to worry about ANYTHING any longer.
Meanwhile, I set up my first 45 degree Cromwell attack. Years ago all I ever used was Dick O'Kane. The attack goes swimmingly. I loose three M14's tearing through the 10 foot waves into the steel flank of a "modern tanker." As the crew and I await our report card, the grades come in. THREE HITS. Two duds.
REALLY? My first Cromwell attack and it goes to perfection only to find that 66% of the ammo is faulty. I hear rumblings among the crew. I'm not responsible for dud swimmers but on top of all the damage we've been taking from these Japanese Fighters, I can't really BLAME them for not being happy.
Oh well. I'm happy the Cromwell thing worked out. It's another trick in the bag anyway. We've sunk 14 ships, we're out of torpedoes and the deck gun is useless. Everyone on board has had a go at it. It ain't working.
Time to head for Midway for refit and refuel. On the way, I'm going to review boat systems to pass the time.
WHAT? What's this? OH MY SWEET LORD IN HEAVEN!
I call my radar op to my bunk and dismiss my XO. It's just me and Anderson, the scope watcher. We converse in hushed tones heads side by side. Each of our lips close to the others' ear.
"Anderson, I've just been reviewing op procedures."
"Yessir?"
"Am I to understand that when we installed that FOTRSU... the default operating state of our SD RADAR is... 'OFF?'"
"Yessir."
"Do you mean to tell me, we've been getting shot to hell by these Japanese fighters because we're not even USING the SD RADAR I spent that renown on?"
"Yessir."
"What in God's name have you been doing during your shifts?"
"Staring at the scope, sir."
"But the radar's not ON."
"No sir. But my job's watching the scope, sir."
"Anderson, get your ass to the scope and press "T" NOW. Get that radar on and never turn it back off.... And keep this conversation between you and me."
Refit went well at Midway and I expect morale to slowly improve as we avoid future fighters with more success.
Captain MORON... signing off.

I was just test running my own mini mod pack (basically TMO 2.5 + ISP 2.4-scene.dat + few little extras)
and started of on a Balao in Australia 1943. So it was August 1943 and i was raiding the Bismarck Sea. So far I just had a small tanker on my list, when I received a transmission that indicated a task force wsw to my position at 24kn. So I went southwest with ahead flank, there it was, the radar contact.
Visible on the radar were 4 core ships + 5 or 6 destroyers. Juicy. It was night and vision was very bad, so i went on a parallel course heading towards them and as soon as i got vision i went on persicope depth. They were still pretty fast so I assumed they were still doing their 24kn. AOB was also no secret because I was on a parallel course. I just needed to get close to one of the core ships to get range. I ordered silent running and slowed down to 2kn. When the first core ship got close enough it was already time to shoot. I couldnt completely determine which type it was, only that it was a heavy cruiser. Since they all had similar mast height I just went for the mogami if I recall it correctly. Put in the range and AOB, started the computer and began to dive. When i was at about 100ft I blasted a full salvo of 10 slow speed long range fish with a spread angle of 35°. After about 2 min i head the first Impact, then 2 Impacts in quick succession. These were followed by massive explosions meaning two ships were gone for good. After another 30 sec or so again: One Impact followed by 2 Impacts in quick succession. Still diving, I could hear another ship exploding and sinking. Slowly afterwards, the destroyers started pinging me, but I was already pretty deep. Some evasion hassle went on for some time, forcing me to get close to 600ft, but i managed to evade them with no damage. While I was listening to the destroyers getting more and more range in between them and me, I noticed that there were no more ship sounds except the destroyers. I knew I had sunk 3 ships and there were 4 cores so I assumed, the last one was also hit and DIW. That meant for me: heading back to periscope depth. While climbing I quit silent running in order to put at least one fish into the tube. After looking through the periscope for a pretty long amount if time I managed to spot the missing one. Barely visible, but still easy to recognize, it was a Shokaku, listing heavily to their starboard side. Only one destroyer was between me and it, the other ones were pretty far away, bombing some dolphin?!
So I went back to 450 feet while getting closer to the last target. My plan was to rise back to periscope depth after passing under the Shokaku and hit it with my rear fish. But I miscalculated and I came up right in front of it. I noticed the sea had become rougher, and also the destroyer that was guarding it had somehow got notice of me. So as he was pinging me I put out the 11th fish towards the Shokaku, that already had started sinking seconds after I fired. Watching the explosion was still very satisfying. After that I went for ahead flank ordered 575ft depth. The following pursuit went for about an hour and they managed to get 2 hits on me, with only minor damage that could be repaired quickly. After that hour they lost me and soon took off. So I managed to wreck 4 capital ships with 6 hits of a 10 torp salvo. I really had not expected that. But oh my what a catch it was.
Where is my medal? https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/952965909218632595/3D069720AD0D4582D0B04B3D793F23985F11DF22/https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/952965909218632595/3D069720AD0D4582D0B04B3D793F23985F11DF22/http://http://https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/952965909218632595/3D069720AD0D4582D0B04B3D793F23985F11DF22/

Btw: Did you work on it further? If not, would it be possible to get some kind of smaller mod like your improved graphics and physics? That would make me a happy child :Kaleun_Salute:

Hallo @Geoff
These are still pictures from the last beta version.
Let's see - I will look at 9D2 in the new year again and see what I can do.

so, there i was...on the east side of the East China Sea, early May, 1944, when a nice convoy comes sailing right up to my position. {smacking my lips}.
i make a nice approach and shoot 1,2,3,4. all hits. there is one left...a tanker. and i violate one of my cardinal rules: always, always, always leave one ship in the convoy to give the escorts something to follow and protect. well, greedy me, i went and sank the last ship. so the six escorts had nothing better to do than assault me and valiant crew. six to one. not very sporting. after 6+ hours this is what the tactical map looked like.
https://i.ibb.co/4fVkX0G/SH4-Img-2019-02-06-20-20-24-540.png
except it wasn't that easy. six hours and god-knows-how-many fish. maybe 8 or 9. but i got 'em all. had to. they wouldn't go away.
it's a good thing that MY navy allows the crew a ration of medicine after an ordeal such as this.:D:yep::salute:

Merry Christmas Tojo!

Only thing missing in the second image is one Kinposan and one Nagara.
The Captain and Crew of the USS Grampus would like to wish the citizens of the Empire of Japan a Merry Christmas.
Leaving Pearl with <redacted> aboard for insertion into <redacted> in the Japanese home islands, the outbound trip was largely uneventful. After completing our objective we head back out into the Pacific, as we leave the channel the watch spots 2 merchants closing. We set up and knock them down. Then, being assigned to patrol in the East China Sea, we came across a large number of aircraft on our radar. Clouds of aircraft circled ahead and sound contact was made with the odd destroyer making a break to check ahead of the task force. We moved to position ourselves in the strait at flank speed underwater until dusk before surfacing to avoid the last returning aircraft. Then we periscoped up and sighted it.
2 shokaku, 1 Hiryu, 3 escort carriers, 2 tenders, 3 tankers, 4+ cruisers, 10+ DDs. At 6.6km (sorry I use metric) and 6.3km the two Shokaku sisters were steaming at 9 knots. Set to slow and contact+influence we fired them slow. 3 at the tailing ship and 20 seconds later 3 at the lead ship. We rigged for silent and set course 20km behind us, 1/3 ahead, dive to 80m. The timer went, nothing....
IMPACT! ... IMPACT! ... IMPACT! ... hundreds of guns light up the sky! Alarms all sounding! IMPACT! ... IMPACT! ... IMPACT! ... they must have hit at just the right angle for the fuses to work, I was worried they'd dodge with the speed/timing not just perfect. Another 3min and we hear scraping, oh so much scraping. The flight decks had all been full! 10min.... I'm glad we were leaving the area because the pressure under the sea just erupted. For a solid 2 minutes I hear nothing but explosions and the scraping of metal against the sea floor. Then after another minute a second round! 1/3 of the Japanese fleet carriers on the bottom! The biggest and best she had. MERRY CHRISTMAS AMERICA!
2 days later in the patrol zone I come across sound contacts for about a half a dozen merchants and 3 DDs. I'm laying in ambush, the lead escort is steaming straight for me about 15AOB, I let loose a fish and just manage to detonate off her propellers, she erupts in flames. The convoy begins to scatter and the other escorts bear down. Several fish and a few misses but we manage to damage a few merchants and knock out the other escorts. Surface and destroy!
We complete the rest of the patrol and have a few run ins with some scattered merchants. Being 1941/2 few are armed with much more than an AA pea shooter. I make full use of my deck gun ammo. I've got 1 stern torp and about 60 rounds of AP left... Thankfully I manage to avoid any further action on the way back to Pearl.
I got a ... Victory Cross? Sure, that's a thing I guess. I'm sure the course of the war is totally and drastically altered. heh.
113817GRT!
This was on vanilla though.

After missing a task force i couldn't see because of bad storm, decided to cross Moluccan sea where i encountered 2 heavy cruisers...alone but very fast.
Little S class was on its knees trying to reach them, so decided a very long shot on the run...
Probably my best shot ever. 2700m, 15 knots!
Didn't had time for precise calculation.
4 torp launched, 4 hits but one dud...

Jessica is wearing that dress I bought last spring. Standing there in her sunglasses, her hair blowing in a gentle island breeze, she waits for me to get out of the car.
I want to tell her she is beautiful, but I'll look right at her and probably say something more like "The sugar truck must've made its delivery early today, because right now I certainly see something sweet."
She smiles and leans in to plant one on me, when a crowd suddenly forms a circle around the two of us. Everyone is there, the men, that one lady who delivers the newspaper to my office, and even Commodore Driscoll glaring at me. I hear a faint alarm going off somewhere at the base.
"Captain!", 1st Lieutenant Martin says.
"Captain!" Commodore Driscoll says.
"Captain!"
I open my eyes to see Ensign Murphy standing at the door to my quarters.
Rubbing my eyes, with a frustrating exhale that whatever news he has couldn't have waited another few minutes to smell Jessica's perfume.
"Contact, Sir." Murphy reports.
"What time is it?" I ask.
"Zero two thirty. Here is your coffee, Sir." he says.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ma0wWYnGkg I found a slightly glitched convoy in the U-boat missions edition from steam, no mods installed.
Edit: This was some 350Km south of the tokyo bay, sadly my game crashed as I shot down the aircraft I also spot in the video

Note to self: If you hit a target with a torpedo at close range, turn away instead of continuing toward him with your mind in neutral. If a fire sets off a secondary explosion you don't want to be too close. Also (same patrol!) if you're doing a night surface attack and pass a large tanker (that might be full of avgas) within 300 yards, it's an incredibly bad idea to open up with the deck gun at that range. Sometimes I do more damage to me than the enemy does. :/\\x:
So i chose the Tambor class sub USS Trout for my first career patrol, after sinking 5 merchant ships, and down to only 4 torpedoes, came across a huge taskforce of 3 Ise-Class Battleships, 4 Cruisers and 4-5 Destroyers, fired a salvo of 4 torpedoes (2 contact, 2 magnetic charge). Contacts were duds, but the two magnetic charge torpedoes were enough to sink this beast. Sank in seconds after listing to port and rolled over like a barrel.
Then i dived to 80 meters and got out of there as discreetly as possible.

Here is the story of the USS Barb performing the only ground based attack on Japan home islands of all of WWII.
Know as the only time a US Submarine sank a Freight Train.
Neat story.
Also describes their addition of the only rocket launcher on a US sub in WWII.

hi guys im new here, i just want to share my story playing sh4 with fotrs and sorry for my bad english :Kaleun_Salute:
still on patrol 2, got 2 torpedoes left but still haven't complete the patrol yet and i suddenly got intel on task force so i intercept them and made it at the right time.. i saw 2 juicy target, escort carrier and battleship fuso and i choose fuso, i launched my 2 fish.. one detonated but another one was a dud :/\\!! and i ran away deeply under the ocean leaving the injured fuso, and after 1 hour i surfaced to recharged but suddenly one japanese plane came to me so i quickly ordered periscope depth but couldn't make it and the japanese plane scored a direct hit to my sub and i was singking.. i waited to get to 60 depth and then i ordered blow ballast, thank god my crew was okay.. hull integrity got damaged 40% the engine room got flooded and my top speed was 3 knots on surface, but i still havent complete the patrol yet and i want to finish the patrol ASAP to keep my rank stable and i dont want my superior to scoff me for abandoning the mission
here's aftermath of my sub after got direct bombed

:hmmm: I was in Career mode at the Cavite N.B., Manila base, on Dec 9th 1941. It was morning, 07:35 in picture i posted. After seeing your inquiry this evening i attempted to replicate the incident. I was able to only replicate it once out of eleven runs, but the time was different; afternoon at 13:05.
The tug and sub start moving at 13:01, and the sub will usually come to stop at the point of collision to allow the tug to go by.
Hope that helps. :salute:

Thanks. That miscreant tug jockey used to drive to the South dock, and then just site there, and has since been busted-down to Seaman grade, and is not allowed at the controls of any boat any longer. The only thing they'll let him operate now is the tow line gun, and even then, he is under close, adult supervision... Definitely changed for next release.

Possible record for shortest mission?
Departed Manila at 0000 on 12/23/41 on a mission to land commandos on Luzon. As I elected to start outside the harbor and the landing zone was just south of there, the mission was completed in just under an hour.
Manila ceased being a usable port as I departed; this repeated itself on a later patrol when Surabaya fell less than a day after I left. Admiral Leary in Brisbane was rather quick to point out that the Balao is to base exclusively out of Fremantle for the foreseeable future.

Captain's Personal Log R.A.MacGregor
April 4, 1942
I finally have command of my own boat! I joined the Navy in ‘32, spent 4 years in the surface fleet on destroyers and my request for transfer to the submarine service was granted. Many of my peers thought this move was tantamount to career suicide. I didn't. I see submarines as a large part of our future navy.
My first boat was the S-20 in ‘34. My first impression was I had made a terrible mistake. The S-20 leaked in every flange and gasket. It smelled of mildew, body odor and rot. It handled like a crippled whale; slow to turn, surface and dive. Fortunately, I only did 2 patrols in the Atlantic until I was transferred to the USS Shark, a Porpoise class boat. Our home port was Mare Island, Calif. Our captain, Commander Benneker, was a man of foresight and vision with the mission of the fleet submarine. Submarines were treated mainly as reconnaissance platforms and Pete Benneker, along with other skippers including myself were trying to change that line of thought. As with every other Naval vessel on the west coast, we were sent to Pearl Harbor after the attack.
December 7, 1941 changed everything. Our ‘ships of the line’, the battleships are lying in ruins in Pearl Harbor. It may sound cold, but I believe it was a blessing in disguise. The 19th century thinking of two battle lines facing each other in parallel raining projectiles down on each other has gone the way of the Dodo. The aircraft carrier and the submarine is the way of the future. Aircraft carriers and submarines are all we have left at this point. Clyde ‘Johnny’ Johnson, my best friend since college, were in the O-club at Pearl discussing our vision of the submarine where we were overheard by an Admiral Charles Lockwood, Chief of Staff Submarine Forces Pacific. He was impressed with what we had to say. We spoke of using the sub in a much more autonomous fashion. He wanted to start using the 'wolfpack' strategy that has been so successful for Germany. I told him that we have to starve Japan to death by focusing on their merchant fleet, denying shipping lanes and being a 'wild card' in surface battles. Much was discussed that evening and I thought Admiral Lockwood was sincerely interested in what we had to say
About a week after that meeting, I was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and given my command by none other than Admiral Lockwood. He told me that I was the type of skipper he was looking for. My new boat, the USS Grouper, a Gato class boat was due in a couple days from Mare Island. I would be on the pier to wait for her

I watched the Grouper thread her way through the harbor distruction with the help of a tug boat. The band on the pier was playing. She tied up and the crew disembarked. A couple hours later, I met with Lieutenant Commander Stevens, the skipper. With the crew on the mole, we went through the change of command ceremony. The crew dismissed, I asked all the officers to meet me at a small restaurant in Honolulu. I wanted to meet them in a casual scenario to see who I would be working with.
We met a 1900 and ordered drinks. The talk was light and casual. My new XO, Lieutenant Paul was a tall, laconic sailor from Maine. He had a shock of blond hair and intelligent blue eyes. He listened more than he spoke. Answers to my questions were well thought out. He had a dry, intelligent sense of humor. I liked him. I knew we would work well together. The rest of the group were good men anxious to go to war with Japan.
We were due to leave on our first patrol in about 3 weeks. During that time we would take small cruises around the islands to shake out the boat. During this time, I wanted the crew to get used to my methods. We were also going to drill. We were going to go through scenarios again and again. I wanted the crew able to do their job in their sleep. Our first exercise was a long circle around the island. We went through crash dives, emergency surface, damage control scenarios and numerous torpedo drills. I had the torpedo fire control party running plots on almost every vessel around the harbor. A week of this had the crew tired but confident. My philosophy was to 'Bleed in training, sweat in combat!'. I gave them a 48 hour pass. It would be their last for a while. We were going to sail into harm's way.
