(A) PROLOGUE

After operations out of PEARL HARBOUR we left for the PHILLIPINE ISLANDS, MARIVELES BAY on November 10 1941, where we arrived on December 2 1941, trained for 5 days.

(B) NARRATIVE

Dec 8-9

Left MARIVELES BAY at 1600 hours on the 8th and proceeded to the LINGAYEN GULF at one engine speed.

ATTACK #1

Arrived at LINGAYEN GULF at Dec 9 0140 hours. Patrolled for about an hour and got visual contact with 3 fishing boats in a convoy headed NORTH out of the gulf. They were approached and boarded. Handguns were found aboard and the crews were ordered to go into rescue boats and the 3 fishing boats were sunk by machinegun and deck gun fire at POS 16°24N 120°08E. All three boats were of the BONITO class like the SHOWA MARU and approximately Tonnage of 100 (gross). Type shown on page 141 in ONI-208-J Supplement No. 2

At 1000 hours we left the LINGAYEN GULF and proceeded on one engine speed to our next assigned patrol area outside the town of VIGAN, where we arrived at 1400 hours.

ATTACK #2

At 0055 we received counter orders sending us on patrol outside the town of APARRI south of the LUZON STRAIT.
At 0134 our watch spotted multiple ships. It appeared to be a convoy consisting of approximately 14 destroyers and a bunch of cargo/passenger ships. We had the chance to send a radio report as it appeared to be an invasion force heading 290°T for the LUNGAYEN GULF or VIGAN. We managed to line up for a salvo of 4 torpedoes from a range of 2000 yards on a troop carrier of the HORAI MARU class. Due to the very large concentration and proximity of destroyers we had to dive immediately after the last torpedo was out of the tubes. At least one of the Destroyers/Subchasers was at that point using active sound location. Sonar heard at least one torpedo detonation and ship braking up sounds from POS 17°45N 120°12E.

We escaped to the opposite side of the convoy and from there we shot 4 torpedoes on a light cruiser of the MAKA class. Two were seen going in front of the target, one impacted without detonating and one passed straight under the 2nd funnel from the front. DAMIT!
But to our luck the torpedo that passed under the MAKA cruiser detonated under a large subchaser on the other side. It sank immediately in POS 17°44N 120°13E.

Now we had 10-11 Subchasers and Destroyers around us but at 180 ft. we found a gradient layer and slipped through towards North. At 0340 we were able to surface and get off a contact report. We were told to brake contact and head for APARRI. Course were set on 021°T for APARRI

Dec 10

At 1529 we were about 20nm North-West of APARRI on course 125°T. At 1611 our watch crew spotted a massive convoy consisting of more then 14 smokestacks in one line. They were flanked by smaller thinner stacks, witnessing of Escort presence. We continued to shadow the convoy and got off a contact report of the convoy heading 305°T at 8.5 knots making the convoy pass through LUZON STRAIT at 2010 base time. We planned for an ambush at 18°42´N 121°17´E

ATTACK #3

1425 3 bow torpedoes were shot from 800 yards at the HORAI MARU passenger carrier. First shot was observed hit under the aft mast, second under the fore mast, while the last hit under the fore most stack. We dove and made an evasive 90° right turn. Ship braking up sounds was heard clearly as we were passing close to the spot HORAI MARU had ended up after our hits. P.O.1st Rodgers from the engine room swore that he heard scrapings along our hull as HORAI MARU sank on POS 18°41N 121°16E. It may have been a loose wire that slid down our hull!

At 2002 we were still being massively depth charged. A surface force consisting of approximately 4-5 vessels of subchaser/destroyer types were hunting us with active sonar. 6 minute later the depth charging seemed to move further away from us, letting us slip away towards North North-East. With now 4 torpedoes left in the bow tubes and 2 in the stearn tubes we headed for APARRI on course 125°T

At 2030 we could still hear faint distant depth charging. So either they were still hunting for us or they had found another unfortunate submarine. Suddenly our boat was shaken by a very near salvo, followed by near salvos again at 2034 and 2036. But whom ever the delivery guy was he gave up and left at high speed. The whole depth charging had in total taken 6 hours!! Non of the personel of my boat had ever experienced anything like this.

Dec 10-12

2144 we surfaced and ran at full speed towards APARRI. We arrived at APARRI patrol zone at 2300 hours and stayed there until the early morning hours on the 11th. At 0631 our SD showed a contact at long range. We rigged the boat and dove to 100 ft. Suddenly the Sturgeon was shook violently by two near explosions. Later inspection showed that the explosions had been close enough to destroy our sight on the deck gun. Lieutenant P.T. Lester had it fixed in no time with his crew. At 0815 new orders came in. We were now ordered to patrol the southern FORMOSA area for at least 12 hours.

So course were set North. At 1016 after an hours tracking we counted 6 contacts moving North to North-West. One of the ships were ID’ed as a NAKA class Cruiser with its 4 distinctive funnels. 10 minutes after a subchaser had apparently turned around and was now at a range of about 6000 yards. It started to open up with its deck guns. We crash dived too 200 ft. on flank speed. At the same time I ordered full rudder left and got the subchaser on our right beam. We kept flank speed until CPO D.L. Coleman reported that Sonar had him on a range of about 3000 yards. Then we turned 70 degrees back towards North and rigged for silent running. Apparently that did offset him as he started his search 1500 yards East of our position.

At 1407 we surfaced and ran at Standard up towards FORMOSA. We had to dive a couple of times due to SD contacts, this time treating them with more respect.

Dec 12-13

At this crystal clear December morning we again had a SD contact on bearing 157° long range. There was no visual contact ever established with this contact.

On the 13th a Merchant was spotted at 2150 hours. It was established to be sailing on course 345°T and was a Mast Funnel Mast type with a composite superstructure. Possibly a HEITO MARU class freighter.

ATTACK #4

We moved into a position ahead of the freighter and lined up for bow shots from 1200 yards. However we had underestimated the speed, so the two torpedoes almost missed. The first one hitting the rudder, lifting the stern up about 15 feet before it settled down. I was a little worried if the second torpedo would run under the freighter as the stern were up in the air. But the freighter came down and the second torpedo exploded right behind the aft mast. In two minutes the freighter was submerged from the stern to the superstructure and all forward momentum had stopped. There was no doubt in my mind – she was going down, and she was going down fast !

All hands in the conning tower had a look at hear and agreed that it was the HEITO MARU. It sank in 7 minutes from the last impact on POS 21°57N 120°12E.

We surfaced and got off a status report. We were told to come back to CAVITE and thus sat the course to 180°T on standard speed.

Dec 14-16

We had a very pleasant transit to CAVITE, where we docked at 0550 on the 16th of December 1941.

When I finally reloaded that save I picked up a radar contact a little bit later. I was tracking him and wasn't paying much attention. I dove to periscope depth to try and get a range to him in this fog, but oddly enough I couldn't hear him on my hydrophones. My sonar op could, but I couldn't even though I was listening in the same direction. The tanker was only doing about 4 or 5 knots, but I should have heard something. Anyway, when I surfaced again, this is what I saw...

Back emergency! :o

I decided to just track him on radar. Later that night the storm abated and I was able to attack.

CONFIDENTIAL

U.S.S. STURGEON

(A) PROLOGUE

After refitting at CAVITE during the periode 16-23 december, we had our new orders. Too conduct patrol in the LINGAYEN GULF for 72 hours during the 23-25th December 1941.

(B) NARRATIVE

Dec 23

Left MARIVELES BAY at 1900 hours on the 23rd and proceeded to the LINGAYEN GULF at two engine speed.

At 1407 hours PO2 George Burke from watch crew #1 reported a ship at 6nm to the west of us. We immediately sat course directly for him, still on two engine speed to plot him. Plot showed a southerly course at 7kts. There were 4 ships in a convoy – none of them showing any smoke over the horizon. So I’m expecting sailboats of some sort.

Sure enough they were identified as large SAMPAN type sailboats. There were 6 of them in convoy and we could not see any nationality on them. So at 1505 we turned east to open up range to them with minimal siluette. After that we are going to return to patrolling the LINGAYEN GULF

Dec 25-26

Contact made at 0955. course set for 297°T– directly for the contact. Plotting showed the contact to be on course 330°T from POS 16°52N 119°54E and consist of 3 Fishing Boat’s. We are moving closer to get a positive ID of their nationality.

1014 Battle stations manned – the Fishing Boats are not flying any colors what so ever. Preparing the boarding party.

Nothing was found aboard and their crews appeared to be of PHILIPINE nationality. We bought some fish from them and let them on their way. Fresh tuna will be served for Christmas this year.

On the 26th we received new orders. New order was to go to SOUTHERN FORMOSA and search for IJN shipping. Course set to 003°T towards the western side of FORMOSA.

Dec 27

Watch crew spotted a warship 6 miles west of us. XO Hubbard had sat the intercept course before he woke me up – splendid. Warship is showing a course of 140°T and we sat course 200°T to intercept his course in a 90° AoB setup. The warship changed course several times making an uneven pattern. As we closed up to 4nm we had to dive. Warship now Identified as a SHIRATSUYU Destroyer. What is he doing here alone?

He was not alone. It turned out he was tail end for a convoy heading South. We had no chance of catching up at this time, as we would have been forced to do that on the surface. Course now again sat to 003° destination FORMOSA.

Dec 28-29

0001 hours new order to go to 26°N 130°E and patrol in a 150nm zone for daily reporting. Course sat south around FORMOSA keeping close to the coast line to pick up eventual shipping hoping to hug the coast for safety. Nothing was found in our transit. We received new orders again about going to the JAPAN-LUZON STRAIT-SINGAPORE shipping lane and intercept all found shipping.

Dec 30

ATTACK #1

Durring the transit our watch crew from the 3rd shift spotted a ship at POS 25°9’N 127°54’E going 6 kts on course 250°T. We were on course 065°T going 10 kts and the path deconfliction was roughly 7nm with the contact passing us to our north. We quickly sat course to intercept on a 90° angle to have the best possible setup. Unfortunately the contact was a much smaller ship then originally reported, so it was much closer then we thought (original estimate was 8nm while it actually were 6nm). I believe the ships watch crew must have seen our wake as we raced in full for the intercept. Because suddenly he started zigzagging using continuous rudder. The rest of our intercept was done at periscope depth using very short spotting with the attack scope. The plotters did an outstanding job making out the zigzag pattern so we could alter course to shoot with a 90° AoB in a zig maneuver. Two tubes were flooded and shot from 1650 yards on the fighting freighter that was now clearly identified as a MFM composite freighter with a very tall funnel and very low freeboard under the masts. All hands in the tower voted for a TAIHOSAN MARU class freighter at 1800 tons. The two torpedoes were both set to a running depth of 7-8 ft. based on our experience from training shots. In training all our torpedoes set lower then 10 ft. were running much lower. The first torpedo were aimed at the funnel, but impacted about 25 ft. for of the aim point. Nothing really happened to the ship so I immediately ordered tube nr. 2 fired. Aim point 10 ft. aft of the stack. One must say that the lack of effect from the first torpedo was delivered in two fold with the second impact. The ship blew up in a tremendous explosion, parting the ship in two behind the superstructure, throwing the aft piece so high up in the air that the propeller and rudder were out of water while the broken end were pointing straight up in the air. The ship sank in a few minutes after this beating. LTJG Augustine C. D. Cunningham took some splendid photos of the Maru as she went down through our observations periscope. I believe the public relations office will have a field day with them.

Course was set back to 065°T into the patrol area. This is looking promising!

1800 hours - Not so promising news…WAKE ISLAND has now been conquered by the Jap’s. They have apparently taken the airbase there in use, so now we will have to take that into account if were going to go to PEARL HARBOUR.

Dec 31

At midnight we sat course for the LUZON STRAIT where we are to patrol the shipping lanes between JAPAN--LUZON STRAIT—SINGAPORE. We are going to setup patrolling in the LUZON STRAIT between the islands BOTEL-TOBAGO and YAMI NORTH ISLAND also called the BASHI CHANNEL. An opening that is 60 nm wide, and very likely the place with most traffic.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!! we celebrated the new year and our sinking on the 30ish with one whiskey to each man from my personal locker.

Jan 1 - 1942

1800 hours…bad news again. This time with an impact on our mission. The LUZON has fallen to the Jap’s. The airbase is in their hands, so we can expect heavy air activity over the LUZON STRAIT. Bugger!!!

2000 SD contact – its pitch black so I’d be surprised if a pilot can spot us tonight. Never say never, this guy looked like he had spotted us, as he kept heading our way. Dove to 150 ft. and was rewarded shortly after with two bomb detonations close to the spot where we dove. Now we can not even stay on the surface at night!!

2230 We surfaced at 2215 after the last SD contact. Right as we broke the surface SD controller PO3 Ferdinand W. Howe yelled out another contact at bearing 149 approximately 30.000 ft. The plane came racing over us, and I think we were as much a surprise to him as he was to us. Cus his bombs landed about 200 ft. in front of us and his machinegun fire was also long. The plane was a two engine bomber type with one tail rudder. Much like our Michell bomber. Again we evaded deep to 300 ft. and changed course back to the shipping lane course.

Jan 1-13

Much bad weather. No contacts sighted nor heard with Sonar during this long layover. On the 13th we had to turn the boat for JAVA if we were to be able to go all the way home, our fuel was low to say the least.

Jan 13-19

Transit on course 190°T at 10 kts on standard bell. 3rd watch teams youngest man spotted a MFM composite freighter at bearing 082° at 22.11 on the 19th

ATTACK #2

As I reached the bridge ENS Larry Hinton had already turned STURGEON to point directly at the spotted freighter and had rung Full on the bell. So it took no time to establish that it was moving towards North. A couple of 3 min plots showed it going heading 335°T at roughly 12 kts. She was in a hurry! We had an estimated range to the freighter of about 4nm at this point, so we came to a parallel course of 335°T in full for the overtake. We would have all night for The overtake and I did not want to burn off all of our excessive fuel.

At 2300 hours we were clearly ahead of abeam and we started to lean 30° into the freighters course. So now we were moving on heading 305°T. 30 min’s later The overtake was complete and we were roughly 2000 yards away from the freighters predicted course. So now I alerted the whole ship with general quarters, although most men had been fully alert all the time through The overtake anyway. We submerged to periscope depth and balanced her off. The three PO3’s from the fore torpedo room Wiley, Bartlett and Burch made ready the torpedoes and opened doors for tube 1 and 2. Tube 1 was set to run at 15 ft. at normal pace and Tube 2 at 10 ft. on fast pace. Both were set to contact/magnetic.

The freighter was soon identified as a KASAGISAN MARU class. It made no course or speed changes for the 2 hours we had been tracking it. So the solution was very simple. Waited on sonar to call it at bearing 340° - had AOB prepared for the mark at bearing 345° and its speed of 12 kts were already punched into the TDC. Position Keeper was engaged and as the freighter reached bearing 345° I took a range and called the bearing mark. AoB was updated and shortly after Tube 1 was fired on the funnel. Tube 2 was shot shortly after on the fore mast.

The first torpedo to hit was #1. It struck at 0020 hours approximately 15 ft. behind the aim point and there was no apparent result from its damage. #2 struck shortly after right at the aim point. In short time the freighter took a list to the right and the stern started to burry into the sea. She went down in 20 min’s stern first. I believe most of the crew made the rescue boats.

Jan 20-28

Transit to and refit at DARWIN. Strangely enough we did not see a single aircraft on this trip down trough the MAKASSAR STRAIT. The Jap expansion forced us to go for a first visit in AUSTRAILIA. The crew had a splendid night on the town here. But there was no time to waste. There is a war to fight so we had to transit to JAVA to have damage fixed to be able to go on another patrol.

Jan 28-Feb4

Transit without events from DARWIN to JAVA.

Thanks guys. I just crop, desaturate, add small yellowish tint, some blur, and do some voodoo on the color curves for the most part :D

I thought those shots would look good in B&W when I was looking through the scope because the ships were slightly faded due to fog. That slightly faded look reminded me of the few grainy pictures/film I've seen of actual periscope shots.

I hit a small freighter (1800 tons) with a torp near the stern. Big boom then I saw a dark column standing straight up in the air, wrapped in flames. I went external to have a closer look, and found the aft section still had the guts of the ship attached, and the bows were missing a deck! Totally weird effect, added to by the fact it was at night so these shots have been adjusted so you can see better...

ps, not sure i posted this correctly...

I suspect in a way its to do with metal properties, if the sim designers did their physics. If some ships are hit in a certain way, it breaks their back (keel) and sections can "fall off".

First patrol ex Pearl Harbor. My first RSRD patrol. Had no idea it would be so long...

Patrol Log, SS Nautilus SS168

Depart Pearl Harbor 11:00 Dec 8. Sea calm, sky clear.

Arrive Midway 13.00 Dec 15. Fuel use 5%. Topped off tanks. Weather remained fine and sea remained calm through entire leg.

Depart Midway 17:00 Dec 15. Sea calm, sky clear.

12:30 Jan 5. Enter patrol area, Bashi channel. Heavy swell. Seas to 20’. Bridge restricted to watch only. Fuel reserve 88%.

00:02 Jan 10. Move inshore. Hopes of calmer seas coupled with ability to monitor coastal traffic.

12:28 Jan 11. Sound contact, warship and multiple merchants. Seas calm, sky clear. Very good visibility. Visual contact shows 1 destroyer escorting 5 merchants. Position boat to shoreward to allow attack regardless of direction convoy takes.

15:18 Jan 11. Attack sequence completed. First kills! 2 merchants sunk for a total of around 9000 tons. Crew performance good. 13 torpedoes fired for 7 good solutions. 2 hits on port side of destroyer. Set to shallow and magnetic influence they must have detonated prematurely, but in both instances the blast lifted the stern clear of the water. DD developed a strong list to port and fires started on deck, but was still able to make 12kts. 3 hits on merchants with good detonations, 1 dud and one deep runner.
16:34. Surface the boat to pursue remainder of convoy. Send contact report and status report. ComSubPac orders boat to move to Japan – Luzon Strait – Singapore shipping lane and continue hunting with remaining 7 torps, but with 3 merchants and a DD still in contact, decide to finish off the convoy, make a run to Balikpapan and resupply before heading to new location.
22:40. Track convoy moving south at 7.5 kts. Move to position to attack facing east. Dive to periscope depth. Plan to attack last ship in line and hope to draw DD into attacking us so as to sink it with torps and engage merchants with guns. DD refuses to be drawn, even when we surface and pound tail end Charlie down to moving at 3 kts. Occasional shots at long range seems as much as he is willing to do. 6 of the remaining torps fired with 3 hits, sinking a further 2 merchants. Convoy now consists of 1 merchant and one sick DD.

00:08 Jan 12. Contact broken. One torpedo and 24 rds per gun not enough to finish the DD and the merchant. Visual contact lost 00:32. Well out to sea now. Sky clear, seas are calm. All is good with the world! Nautilus comes through without a scratch.

00:01 Jan 13. Clear skies, calm sea. Making 14 kts heading for Balikpapan. Close enough that extra fuel consumption won’t be significant loss.

20:43 Jan 17. Tie up at Balikpapan, fuel reserves 77%. Some cloud, seas calm. Preparations underway for defence of Balikpapan by Dutch as Japanese have secured Tarakan to the north. Original plan to allow crew 24 hrs rest is reduced to 12 hrs. Plan to shove off at 08:45. Take on fuel, ammo, torpedoes and reprovision.

08:45 Jan 18. Seas choppy, waves to 4’. Heavy rain. Visibility very short. Ideal time to slip out of harbour.

14:20 Jan 20. Warship sighted bearing 046. Move to intercept on surface as weather conditions favourable.
15:13. 1 CL and 9 DD’s. Contact report sent. ComSubPac orders contact broken. Not disagreeing.

16:10 Jan 28. Enter second patrol area. Sea calm, sky clear, visibility unlimited.

13:20 Feb 1. First a/c sighting on radar. Dive to avoid detection.

20:16 Feb 1. Leave patrol area. Intend visiting Okinawa and examining port defences.

00:01 Feb 2. ComSubPac orders Nautilus to Singapore. Decide to continue investigation of Okinawa before heading south.
11:35. Go to periscope depth on approach Itoman harbor, Okinawa.
11:40. Sound contact, warship.
17:36. Go to action stations. In position to engage screen. Sound man has only identified single DD guarding harbour entrance. DD identified as Asashio class.
DD changed course, possible that periscope was sighted. Waters very shallow. No pinging, sub stationary. DD passes directly overhead with boat at 50’. As DD passes order all ahead flank. 4 depth charges dropped, but late. No damage. Destroyer presumably speculating on our presence. Periscope raised and solution determined for short range shot from stern tubes. 2 fish shot at range of 700yds, one hit.
18:00. DD down at bows but still underway. Reduce to slow and enter harbour.
18:47. Stationary in middle of Itoman harbor. 3 auxiliary gunboats and 8 merchants tied up. Execute leisurely attacks as damaged DD unwilling to enter harbour. Will deal with him on exit.
22:04. Complete attacks. 3 merchants and DD destroyed. Of the 18 torpedoes fired 8 were duds. A lot of tonnage left untouched because of that.

11:05 Feb 14. Tie up in Darwin. Replenish supplies, crew allowed 24hrs rest. Opportunity to post Valentines home, although they won’t get there until Christmas…

11:00 Feb 15, depart Darwin for Singapore.

01:26 Feb 21. top off tanks Tjilitjap.

04:58 Feb 24. Enter 3rd patrol area off Singapore.

00:01 Feb 28. No sightings. Decide to investigate Singapore harbor.

16:08. Warship sighted at Singapore breakwater. Stationary small gunboat.
21:58. Enter Singapore harbor. Heavy rain, visibility 1000yds.
22:13 Gunboat sunk.
22:49 Merchant sunk. No other shipping present. Decide to investigate Changi.

04:09 Mar 1. Enter channel near Changi. Very heavy rain, visibility 600yds. Sight and sink 1 minelayer and a small tanker.
05:08. Rain stops and sky starts to clear catching us on the surface 250yds off shore.
07:33. Sight small fishing boat. Sink it with gunfire. Head to new patrol area 300nm NE of Singapore.

15:17 Mar 2. Enter 4th patrol area.

00:01 Mar 6. No sightings. Heading home via Okinawa again.

06:11 Mar 15. Arrive off Itoman harbour. No sound contacts. Visibility near zero.
06:25 Sound contact, warship. Range and bearing indicate screen for Naha harbor to the north.
10:23. Inside Itoman harbor. Visibility 800yds due to heavy rain. Sight 2 ships damaged from our previous visit. 1 has sunk the other still afloat, if barely.
15:52.. Rain easing. Last attack completed. Assessing results and preparing to leave. Sunk were old medium oiler (11:20), old medium oiler (12:19), small old oiler (15:04), medium modern split merchant (15:52).
16:47. Chase tug out of Itoman, surface and sink with gunfire. Turn boat around and head north to Naha. 4 torpedoes remaining.
22:07. Arrive NW Naha 4000yds from breakwater. Enter harbor. I DD and 4 gunboats patrolling, however DD is to the south and gunboats are stationary. Sink 2 oilers in harbor (23:36 and 23:41)and 1 large modern composite merchant tied to outer breakwater (23:59). No attempt by enemy to locate us. All torps expended. The Darwin torps were very good, only 2 duds out of 20. Set course for Pearl. 4,900 miles to home. Set course, order ahead full. A week saved is worth the fuel.

03:03 March 31. Arrive Pearl, 48% fuel remaining, 60 torpedoes expended. First patrol ends after 113 days. Credited with 3 warships and 18 merchants for just under 70,000 tons.

Some shots from a patrol in the Bismark Sea. Oct 1943. The patrol turned up a small convoy and I was able to send 1 destroyer and 6 Merchants to the bottom. They never figured out where I was as not one depth charged dropped near the sub. All torps were expended as I am a lousy shot so we exited the area.
Later that night a radar contact was picked up and I submerged to avoid. A large convoy of tankers and troop ships w/escorts went by at 8000 yards! And I am out of torps. After they went by I surfaced and called in the location of the convoy via radio. I actually rec'd a response from HQ telling us nice find.
A few seconds later I relized that 3 destroyers had hung back expecting me. They all opened fire and we took 5 or six direct hits. We crashed dived but once below the surface the sub flooded in the engine room and forward torpedo room. We were going down. The stern dropped so far below the bow, that we were almost vertical about 70-80 degrees. We went through 300 feet. Becuase of the angle I ordered Flank speed.
The screws were barely turning but it was enough to hold us. we stopped sinking. I could not believe it.
Repairs took another 2 hours of real time as i did not dare to accelerate the time. Two hours of Pressure hull fixed sir to Heavy flooding. The destroyers finaly moved on and we Surfaced!
We surfaced and went home. Crew was banged up a bit but no deaths. And I got a pretty cool Medal. My first ever in the entire series.
One of the most exciting Missions I have ever done in SH4. I had to share this one.
Thanks to my crew and only them I made it home.

Why some of my friends think this sim is boring I will never understand.

06.29 Firing position reached. 2 fish shot at 800yds. Both hit, ship explodes and sinks immediately. Approx 5,000t.
13.58 Ship spotted. Move to firing position.
14.19 1 torpedo fired. Hit on the bows.
14.26 Surfaced and called battle stations. Engaged crippled merchant with guns from 2,500yds.
14.28 Ship sinks, 6 rounds HE fired in total. Approx. 4,000t
20.01 Air contact on radar. Dive to avoid.
20.23 While still avoiding aircraft, sound man picks up merchant at long range. Move to intercept.
20.59 Second sound contact, parallel track approx 4,000yds astern first merchant.
21.19 2 torpedoes fired from bow tubes at lead merchant. One hit, one dud. Move to other side of the track, swap targets to trailing merchant.
21.27 1 torpedo fired stern tube. Hits, resulting in large explosion. Ship sinks quickly (7,000t)
22.29 First target sinks (5,000t) Sonar picks up another sound contact. Move to chase on surface. Target speed calculated at 10kts. Visual contact on and off as weather deteriorates. Eventually close to a reasonable distance but visibility now almost zero. As track and speed are well established fire on sonar only. 3 fish shot, 1 miss, 2 hits. One is a dud. Surface the boat and cruise around with gun crews at the ready to finish her off, however when vessel located she is already sinking.

May 16
07.00 Sound contact, merchant. 2 attempts to locate fail due to heavy rain and inability to predict track.

May 17
03.25 Sound contact, warship. Harbour guard for Isia Iun. Boat positioned NNW of harbour entrance. Sonar recon of DD track shows racetrack location. Heavy rain continues which should mask our movements. Set boat to creep into the harbour.
13.29 Finally inside harbour. 10 hours to cover 9,000yds. Depth 48’ to keel and occasionally brushing the bottom.
14.09 2 merchants spotted, tied up. 2 torpedoes fired. Both hit. One good, one dud. 5 fish left. DD has located us but is unable to attack as we are positioned such that he would risk collision with wharf or breakwater.
14.29 2 more torpedoes shot, one at a third merchant, one at the first which was hit but refusing to sink. Both hit and detonate. DD getting angry. Each pass we get pinged but he cannot line up. His approaches are slightly different each time, so he may figure it out soon.
14.42 DD approaches from a different angle, but still won’t pass over us. He will, however, hit the breakwater unless he slows significantly. This will put him almost dead in the water at a predictable spot only 800yds off our beam. Prepare our last 3 fish and sight on the sound bearing.
14.47 DD comes out of the rain at a range of 900yds and will pass down our starboard side. Firing solution calculated on estimated position he must stop or run aground.
14.49 Torpedo fired at DD. Hit, but a dud. DD stationary.
14.51 2nd torpedo fired. Dud. DD manoeuvring to turn towards rather than backing away. He seems to have lost his reason, but we are still in trouble. Prepare boat for high speed exit.
14.55 DD has managed to turn broadside as we shoot our last fish. It hits under the bridge but doesn’t seem to do much damage. We run, but DD doesn’t follow and seems to be stationary. Move to deeper water and wait.
15.31 Destroyer sinks! Surface and move to northern end of harbour to engage remaining merchants with gunfire.
18.14 Ammunition expended. No active defence and masking heavy rain allowed piecemeal destruction of merchants. 3 merchants and a large junk sunk for almost 14,000t to guns alone. Depart area and set course for Pearl.

19.00 arrive Pearl Harbour, fuel remaining 18%.

Thanks Mav87. Third patrol was to Tokyo bay. Moved north and attacked a harbour there, but 40% of torps were duds. I got shot up a bit this time, had 12 crew wounded and 11% hull damage. When we got back (still with 37,000t even if only 12 torps worked) instead of my XO getting a boat, I got one. My XO got the Nautilus and half the old crew. My new boat (Drum) has a somewhat inexperienced crew, AND they gave me a boat with only a 3 inch deck gun... I think they're trying to tell me something!:arrgh!:

I thought that the SWDW 'diverate' MOD corrected the high-riding subs....this diverate MOD was incorporated into PE2 (as an option for installation). I therefore thought the high-riding subs were fixed in PE2. Is/was that true....and will such a MOD be incorporated into PE3?

Yes the diverate mod is included, but Dave's work makes the sub react better to the oceans movements.

I wasn't even going to keep this shot when I took it, but I find it strangely ironic in a way. It is from a sinking Momoyama Maru during rough seas.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/Syxx_Killer/SH4%20Shots/SH4Img2008-05-01_194158_906.jpg

05-11-08, 09:35 PM
Some shots of a Taiyo-class CVE that fell victim to the USS Spearfish on her first patrol. This occured in the vicinity of the Solomons in Aug 1942.

I had actually picked up a radar contact which I managed to intercept. It resolved into a small TF in line astern formation, comprising in the lead, an Asashio-class DD, the Taiyo, a Mogami-class CA, then another DD.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/ZeroNiner/SH4/Spearfish%201/Taiyo.jpg

I submerged off the port bow of the TF and lay in wait. I launched 3 fish, of which one was a dud. But two hit roughly in the centre which was enough to induce a severe list to port.

Here you can see the wake from the torps.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/ZeroNiner/SH4/Spearfish%201/taiyo2.jpg

The result:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/ZeroNiner/SH4/Spearfish%201/Kaboom1.jpg
2nd hit
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/ZeroNiner/SH4/Spearfish%201/Kaboom2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/ZeroNiner/SH4/Spearfish%201/Listingbadly.jpg

I fired the last torp in the bow tube. Unfortunately the lead DD had circled back and took the torp meant for the CVE.

I swung around and fired one torp from the stern tube. By now the Taiyo was dead in the water.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/ZeroNiner/SH4/Spearfish%201/Kaboom3.jpg

It sank soon after the 3rd hit, followed by the DD about 10 minutes later.

Patrol number I forget... September 1943. Sent to Tarawa to recon, then to the Marshalls to patrol, then to the Marshalls to hunt for baddies... then just let loose to hunt. Nothing sighted at all. If you look over the first 2 patrol logs you'll see I have been developing a taste for raiding harbours. After being let loose on this last patrol I had a choice of Rabaul, Truk or Wake, all of which were reachable with fuel to get home. I've raided Rabual twice already, and enjoyed sneaking past the submerged mountain at the north end of Wake, but the one and only attempt I made on Truk I almost got my butt handed to me because I got caught between a subchaser and the anti-submarine nets on the west side of the island. I made it out, but with lots of holes in the hull. Now, with more experience, and a boat full of fish, I decided to go back.
Looking at the map I couldn't see any likely place where the nets would hang over water deep enough to let me slide under. Instead, I turned the surface search radar to full range scan and cruised up and down the east side of the Island doing a recce. 5 patrol vessels in total. I waited until they were heading in opposite directions, aimed for the gap and opened the throttles. I entered Truk in broad daylight, at flank speed, on the surface! Once I was in shallow water I figured I'd crossed the nets, slowed and submerged.
On the way in the radar had picked up 4 stationary vessels in the centre of the port area. I clicked on them expecting them to be merchants, but it came up as a task force. So far the biggest warship I'd sunk was a CL, so this was promising. I slip as deep as I can, only 10 feet below the keel, and move into a firing position. Major hassle is that I have a mix of Mk23's and Mk14's, so I need to get inside 4000yds.
Move in, stop engines, raise scope. 4 BB's, all stationary! Yamatao, Fuso, Kongo and I forget the 4th. Here's me with 4 stationary BB's and a full boat of fish! Playtime!:arrgh!:
I did discover that ships in port are harder to sink. 8 hits on Yamato including 2 magazine explosions (very pretty) and she finally went down. Well, sat on the bottom. Didn't even get her decks wet it was so shallow. Fuso also went down, on her side. Other 2 also settled on the bottom, but although they were decks awash, and making the 'sunk ship' sound, the still came up as valid targets on the attack map, I could still lock with the scope, and I didn't get a 'sink' message. Damn. Still, 2 BB's in a patrol is a good haul, and crippling 2 more ... :sunny:. By now I have 2 escorts buzzing around. My developed trick of placing myself in a firing position difficult to pass over worked... the harbour defence boat scooted by and ran straight into a dock... and tied up! Must be an AI thing. The subchaser was a different story. Him I had a very hard time getting rid of. I used my last 2 torps (stern) to get rid of him. They fly well, don't they?

By now it's dark, and with no fish left, time to run. Again, to miss the nets, it's a surface run. I come up to 29 feet so the radar will work to find 7 escorts patrolling along my chosen route. 2 are stationary, so really only defining a route, while the other 5 need to be avoided. Again, using the radar I pick the time, come to the surface and go to flank. I had to keep nudging the course north to avoid 2 of them, but we did it. A clear run back to port, and my first battlewagons!

Oh, no medal either. Didn't crack the 100,000ton mark.

I was attacking a convoy when these two ships got bungled up with each other. I hit and disabled one and the other just sat there as it rammed into the other. I heard the sound that ships make when they hit bottom and followed the noise with the external cam to see what all the commotion was. I found the one ship landing on top of the other.

The Asashio (in the foreground) had the misfortune of running down the starboard side of the medium freighter in the background. The net effect was taking one of the two torps I intended for the freighter... Her momentum carried her quite a distance while she broke apart.

Then i noticed that they lowered a lifeboat into the sea when my 3rd torpedo hit the ship as well. The blast destroyed the lifeboat and i was credited with "Ship sunk Lifeboat 1 ton"

Good, I see you got the hang of it. ;)

And I see you got in some target practice on that poor Mogami as well.

Example of what you can do with GIMP: first is original (though scaled down), second with "softglow" which really brings out the explosion and splash against dark background, third "oilified" (like oil-painting);

We were sailing along on the bridge of the Yamoto in the wide vast expanse of Pacific waters and came across this British rust bucket making it way along.

Going into action stations we were questioning why this vessel was out here all by itself and not with another enemy convoy heading to some battlefront outpost here in the Pacific.
After checking the radar posts and lookouts for any other allied vessels in the area. I the commander of the mighty Yamoto decided with sending a number of 18in shells into her and sending her to the bottom of the cold sea.

But after a number of direct hits of our main batteries... there she was still sailing away... like there is nothing going on at all!

We slowly steered the Yamoto in for a closer look at our spectral enemy and noticed first off... where is the crew members that should be manning it's decks or running for the siderails readying themself's to abandon ship. There was None! :o

At the saame time this sea phantom keep up it's steady head of steam and never varied it's path on it's way to some hellish destination it was to keep. Where ever that could be?

The crew of the Yamoto mean time is getting ever more bewitched by what is before them in this ocean of mysteries.

And as captain of the Yamoto I ordered the gunner's to open fire at will upon this rust bucket to end this charade of a spectacle and prove to the crew that this ship is just like any other enemy vessel we have put to the bottom graveyard along side of Davy Jones.

But this was not to be... :hmm:

As captain of the Yamoto I tried to search for any answer to give to my puzzled and anxious crew.

But what answers can you tell your crew when a rusting bucket of bolts floats by you like it's going to a Sunday picnic after taking the pounding of 18in shells that would sink any battleship after a few solvo's had struck home?

Do You Have An Answer??? :shifty:

Be very weary of those long summer nights... out in the vast spaces of the lonely cold sea and keep a sharp lookout my fellow sailor's and seafarers!

Just started SH4 in mid-May after getting it as a gift, been working my way into it after sub school with the Career, at end of each patrol I give up 1 (or more) items to increase realism. This was patrol #4, at approximately 50% realism, and second with TMO (my only mod right now); I'd just gotten the new "Drum" out of Pearl and the patrol was rather uneventful, nothing sighted except a single merchant in the middle of the ocean with a New Zealand flag, which fortunately I didn't just gun down as I was prepared to do. Got directed to the Carolines (August 1942) and sunk 5 fishing boats / sampans with guns just for something to do basically. Did a routine save and then the game crashed a little while later. Kept thinking the atoll looked vaguely familar and then did a search on Truk--it wasn't listed as such on my map but indeed I had been given the task of patrolling around Truk. Should be good prospects me thinks...gotta be patient.
Working off a FOX transmission, I set up for a fast TF moving in my direction. Sea state was very high but in pre-dawn got a contact to my SE. Started at flank on about 070 to close and investigate. Holy smokes, a TF consisting of 2 Kongos, an Ise, 2 CLs, 2 CAs and 3 DDs. And fast! Headed about 015 at 16 knots, so I turn to try to get in front. But, in the sea state I was only making 16-17 at flank. Watched the sun come up silhouting the TF at about 6-8 miles, could see I was getting no where. Finally opted to send a contact report--I suppose since I had all my torpedoes still my instructions came back to intercept and do some damage. Yeah, if only I could get 1-2 more knots out of this boat...or if the TF would make a turn (toward me of course).
This continued for about 6 hours, until around 1300, when one of the DDs must have saw me as he came out corkscrewing towards me in the waves. He didn't shoot deck guns so either he wasn't sure of what he saw or was too rough for the guns, but at 4000 yards I finally pulled the cork and figured the TF was now gone. But, the DD then began spiraling back toward the TF, but was losing ground/falling behind. At 8000 yards I took a chance and surfaced with decks awash and continued NNE. The DD didn't follow me. Finally I fully surfaced the boat.
Then, a break. Either the TF slowed to permit the DD to overtake them easier or they slowed to enter anchorage (water was shallowing), but their speed dropped to 6 knots. I took the battery off charge and raced ahead as quick as I could in case they resumed speed when the DD rejoined them (its spiral search pattern had it way out of station now, and the other 2 DDs now peeled off and steamed SW at a medium speed).
I got ahead on the projected path, even managing to add some to my battery (which was still only at about 65%) before setting my position keeper on the lead BB and going deep to adjust torp settings, rig for silent, and wait. A few trips up showed I was a bit closer to the path than I originally wanted, so I turned slightly to open the range a touch. I was pretty much set up on TA 345 and with the formation steaming at a slow 6 knots in line ahead was going to parade right down my port side. But I'd hoped to let them pass and shoot at 2 and wasn't playing that way. I set GQ.
At 800 yards I let 3 go at the lead Kongo, then tried 2 at the 2nd ship (Ise). Then I went to about 120 feet and headed east, under my target. I heard 4 hits. After clearing the formation line I came back up, fired 1 stern tube at the Kongo and 2 tubes at the Ise. Then my last stern tube went to the 3rd BB (another Kongo), and began tu turn to bring my 6th bow tube back to bear. Then I hear pinging, look around, and see the Yuguri (sp?) DD who was after me earlier tearing up the other side of the Ise. Tube 1 was now loaded again, so I opened the doors and hit the DD as she came through the BB line with a quick shot, which hit. Now I'm showing the 1st Kongo and the Ise as sinking, and the DD quickly rolled over as well (was hit in the engine room). I fire 2 more shots at the 3rd BB (Kongo)...since the formation was still at 6 knots and range was about 1200 these were 2 more solid hits and indications were this was was headed for the bottom as well. So, 3 BBs and a DD in the bag, on to the next in line, the CLs and CAs. The CLs were Furutaka and Takao class, the CAs were Naka and Yubari (I think). I turned by stern to the Furutaka and hit her two times, and 1 hit on the Takao. Turning back around I fired my remaining torpedoes on this pair, bagging them. Being out of torpedoes and having the sonar tell me of approaching DDs at long range had me drop scope, dive deep, and resume silent running to the south to get out of there. After about 6 more hours (nightfall) and clear hydrophones I cautiously raised my scope, saw nothing, surfaced, and got out of dodge.
Was a real blast getting into a real TF, some lessons learned (such as be patient, stay with a target if possible) and some luck (having the destroyers get out of position). Clearly was my most successful patrol. Now, into Pearl for some R&R, trade in some renown, and decide what to drop on my options board to increase realism further.
Am loving this game and this community.

Summer, 1943, USS Halibut Fights to the Death

100% Realism

THE CROSSING

Our mission was a photo recon of Osaka harbor, deep inside the inland seas of Japan. USS Halibut, decked out in an MS-9 all black paint scheme, with a conning tower cut down at the back, set out to sea and had an uneventful trip across the Pacific, diving twice for aircraft radar contacts as she approached the waters East of Japan.

FIRST CONTACT

At about 2200 hours, radar contact was made with two surface contacts. Initial manual radar plots showed the contacts moving North, perpendicular to Halibut's Westerly course. A slight course adjustment was made and the engineer division were advised to increase RPMs to full speed. Sometime later it became apparent that either the initial plot was bad, or the targets had changed course to East North East. Halibut was now West of the radar contacts and was in the unenvious position of having to pursue the contacts who were now East of Halibut, and moving away at was was soon realised to be a radid rate of advance.

THE CHASE

Halibut increased to flank speed and gave chase, updating the radar plot as she went. Several hours went by before visual contact was made at about 4700 yards. The targets proved to be two un-escorted liners, moving at an estimated speed of 18 knots with no zig zags. Halibut continued to struggle to get into a firing position on these two high value targets. Within the hour, what looked like the best opportunity for a shot was developed. Halibut closed on the surface on the lead passenger liner (no doubt carrying many troops), which was the larger of the two ships. Seas were moderatly rough, and the time was pre-dawn with no moon. From about 2000 yards, Halibut took her shot, firing a spread from all six bow tubes. Three of the torpedoes pre-matured about half way to the target, giving her time to put her rudder hard over, casuing the other topedoes to miss, ane the lead liner to steam off to the South at a high rate of speed. With great disappointment, Halibut turned her attention to the second liner, which was still advancing on their original base course. Halibut dove and turned her stern to the second target, making the stern tubes ready for firing in all respects. As the second liner approached within 2600 yards of Halibut through, her Captain must have realised that staying on the track of of a ship that just miutes before narrowly escaped being torpedoes was not a wise tactical choice, and she too turned south at a high rate of speed. We were faced with the choice of another long surface chase with day light (and no doubt air patrols) approaching, or writing off the six wasted torpedoes and continuing with her primary mission. The choice was clear, and Halibut dove to 100 feet, slowed to 1/3 speed, and continued towards Japan, feeling somewhat cheated.

IN JAPANESE WATERS

The next evening, just after sundown, Halibut surfaced for a breath of fresh air and a battery charge at the approach to the straits West of Shirahama. She continued int othe straits, making visual contact with some Sampans, which she ignored. Further into the straits, with the water under her keel shallowing, she made radar contact with a lone eastbound merchant. She set course to intercept.

THE SECOND CONTACT

This time, the approach was relativly easy, due in part to the merchant moving at around 5 knots. Radar plot was accurate, and visual contact was soon made with a medium sized freighter. Halibut dove, made her final approach, and soon sent a spread of 4 bow shots onwards towards the target. Again, two torpedoes prematured, but two torpedoes hit the target in the bow and detonated. The target slowed and soon came to a stop, but showed no signs of sinking. Halibut repositioned to give the boys in the stern torpedo compartment room some extra elbow room. The torpedo in tube 7 was soon on its way, but proved to be a dud, striking the target at a 90 degree angle but not exploding. Tube 8 was fired with the same results. The torpedo from tube 9 was set to run a bit deeper that the others, and it too hit the target, this time with a great explosion. The freighter was finished, and Halibut had made her first kill. Now closer to shore and with only about 60 feet of water under her keel, Halibut headed back towards the center of the straits and for deeper water before continuing her penetration of the in-land seas.

HALIBUT IS BLOODIED

As dawn approached, active sonar was heard approaching. Halibut put up her periscope of investigate, and a small ASW patrol vessel was seen approaching directly towards Halibut while zig zagging on a torpedo evasion plot. It was soon apparent that Halibut had somehow been detected, and this small vessel was after some big game.

With a torpedo attack against this small vessel seen as unlikely to bring success given it's speed and evasive manouvers, not to mention Halibut's less than reliable torpedoes, Halibut took a sounding (the ASW vessel quite obviously already knew where Halibut was and was steam there at high speed) and dove to 170 feet, right near the bottom, before rigging for silent running and chaning course to the South. Soon, the ASW vessel passed overhead, and depth charges were heard splashing. They detonated slose enough to shake Halibut but not cause damage. Halibut continued to evade, but the next depth charge run was closer, and surface armaments, as well as the compressor and some lesser systems took some damage. The hull was still intact. Evasion continued, and several more depth charge runs were close, but not damaging. Still, Halibut could not find deeper water, and it was apparent that the ASW vessel was easily able to track her. Another depth charge attack brough damage to all the stern tubes. Halibut was now clearly in a pickle. While the officers were deciding on a new strategy, another depth charge attack destroyed the stern tubes and started floing in the stern torpedo room. Halibut's choices were clear. Either stay down, and continue to take a beating, or surface and hope the deck gun, though somewhat damaged, was still functional. Staying submerged at 170 feet had not proven effective, so the surface option was taken with some anxiety. It was recognised that the ASW vessel was small and lightly armed, and may not be able to match Halibut in a surface gun action. The crew readied for battle surface action, and Halibut surfaced at flank speed with her stern to the ASW vessel to give the gunners on the stern deck gun the best field of fire while minimizing Halibut's aspect to the Japanese sailors. Gun action ensued, with hits suffered by both vessels, but as predicted, Halibut was able to outlast the ASW vessel, which eventually sank in flames.

HALIBUT CRIPPLED ON THE SURFACE

Halibut found herself on the surface, having out shot the Japanese ASW vessel, but with hull breaches in several compartments. Aborting her photo recon mission, Halibut made best possible speed on the surface to escape Japanese waters in broad daylight. It was not long before Japanese naval aviation arrived, but Halibut made a good showing, downing one twin engine plane without suffering further damage. Halibut continued at best possible speed, exiting the straits and finding the deeper water of the open Pacific which she could no longer take advantage of in her condition. More planes came, and Halibut continued evasive manouvers while being strafed and bombed. Two more Japanese planes were damaged and Halibut was still underway when radar contact was made with a lone fast approaching ship, which soon proved to be a full fledged Japanese destroyer.

HALIBUT'S FINAL ACTION

Fighting on the surface was no longer an option, and Halibut dove to 80 feet, which was as far as the crew dared to take her in her condition. As might be expected, the Japanese destroyer's first depth charge run was devestating, and Halibut was all but finished. Emergency surface was ordered, and the crew donned life jackets, preparing to abandon ship, not sure if Halibut would be able to make it back to see daylight. Halibut though, had proven she could take a beating and still still find room for a bit more. In her last act, she made it to the surface, where the crew quickly abandoned ship as Japanese shells tore into Halibut mercilessly. Having successfully delivered her crew to relative safety, Halibut slipped beneath the waves on her last dive.

LESSONS LEARNED

1. 100% realism limits player ability in a realistic manner that adds greatly to game play. Under these conditions, torpedo attacks on alerted ASW vessles are a high risk proposition, and escorts need to be given the utmost in respect, and avoidance.

2. No surprise here, but shallow water also severely limits tactical options, which sounds fine as theory, but becomes very clear when you find yourself bested and unable to escape even the smallest of ASW vessels. In retrospect, it might have been better, after torpedoing the freighter, to surface and move at high speed for deep water before diving again, rather than slowing advancing for deep water while submerged in the hopes no one will come across you duing your slow transit.

3. From the time that Halibut stern room started flooding from the initial depth charge attacks, I could not find fault with my decisions, because there were no real decisions being made. All actions from that time on were with Halibut totally on the defensive and unable to regain the initiative, reacting to Japanese moves with the only available option at each stage. In essence, Halibut was dead from the time the first sonar ping hit her hull in 180 feet of water. It just took the Japanese some time to finish the job.
