Check out this Takao, she just won't give up! Badly damaged her and the Ise BB in the background the night before (about 10 hours earlier) made an end-around to finish 'em off, got 1 into the Takao and 2 into the Ise before the escorts caught on and I had to crash dive.
Takao capsized in minutes and I've got the kill in my log, but she just won't sink!!! Been 2 hours, she's still floating...
I'm picturing Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowell, Stella Stevens, Shelly Winters, et. al. desperately fighting their way "up" to the bottom of the ship ;)
Guess after I finish off the Ise tonight, I'll go back and see if she's still floating...

Gotta question bout the camera I can't figure out myself, I thought this was a good place to ask.
Is there a way to zoom the camera in? I don't mean moving the camera closer, but actually changing the perspective like changing the focul length of a lense?

i hit a takao that had stopped with one torp directly in the middle on its port side and it went to flank and rudder right full and finally rolled and coasted for a mile upside down and after 12+ hours was still floating.

What you are seeing there is a faked FPS, I sped up the clips to make it look alright. I usually get around 5-6 FPS. I have a 1.8Ghz Prossessor, 1Gig of RAM, and a ATI Radeon Xpress 200m (256m?)

@GoldenEagle8,
Speed up ( Up-Grade ) all three ( Processor,Ram,Video card ) and your movies will look 100% better, as will SH4 when you play it. It would drive me nuts to watch all that stutter as I played the Sim. Your Idea for your movie was very good though. Have you tried this to see where your computer stands with SH4?

Except for the minimum Ram of one gig your stats are not even in the ball park and the ram needs uped by at least two gigs. Two gigs will work ok but three sure are a lot better, but processor and graphic card first ( if your motherboard can handle it? ).

I posted pics earlier about a Takao that I capsized and she wouldn't sink, and an Ise BB that I put a hurtin' on. Well it took 6 hours of evading DC's then another 24 hours of hunting but I finally tracked down and caught the Ise shortly after sunset on Feb 2, 1942. Beautiful night, clear skies, full moon. Beautiful for me anyway. Don't know what the Japs thought of it :hmm:
Here is her demise:
1st, here she is as I made my approach from her port beam. Range about 1100 yds. Decent list to port, nice fires going, she was making 4 kts. Had fallen way behind the task force, at least 10-12 nm. No probs, right? Easy kill...
http://home.triad.rr.com/llambeth/Ise%201.jpg
I was so intent on setting up the shot, I totally missed something  See if you can spot what I missed in this pic, coming up at flank speed. Check the bone in her teeth:
http://home.triad.rr.com/llambeth/Ise%202.jpg
Oh sh*t, it's another Takao :( Rapidly closing between me and the Ise.
Don't have a clue where she came from, or if she knew I was there, I was at PD, dead stop, silent running, periscope just barely showing above the surface. Hopefully a "hole in the water" ;)
Decided to take a chance, stayed at PD and took the occasional peek with the periscope. That damned Takao passed not even 200 yds off my bow and never even slowed down! YEAHHHH!!!! TIME TO GO TO WORK!!!!!
"Up scope! AOB 85 port! Range 900! Speed 4! Open tube 3! Depth 21, spread right 2 degrees! Fire tube 3!"
Here's the impact:
http://home.triad.rr.com/llambeth/Ise%203.jpg
Nice plume of water, detonations in the aft magazine, decided to hold off the 2nd shot.
Final result:

I came across my first convoy, consisting mostly of Freighters, but 2 warships as well. I took out a couple freighters with torpedoes, and soon after the warships caught on to me. As I was aiming at the broadside of a freighter, I fired. as the torpedo travelled through the water, one of the warships came out of nowhere, intercepting the shot and taking it right in the front of the ship. It exploded and immediately showed up on my log as Ship Destroyed. it had a great display of fire which was pretty delightful, broke in half, and sunk. i took out the rest of the freighters (except 3 stubborn ones that were stationary and wouldn't sink) and the other warship (I think a destroyer) came on to me. I was still at periscope depth, and the warship was closing directly behind me. I was running out of batteries and air, so I had to come up soon. I decided i'd fire at it with my aft torpedo, and it also nailed the destroyer in the front, causing immediate explosion. This one went straight up and down vertical and sank. With my last torpedo, I sank one of the stubborn ships, and after much fooling around with the deck gun (which I don't know where to aim) I sank the other two ships. After depletion of all my torpedoes and much ammunition, I decided to head home. The sonar readings on the map I don't really know why they're there because I was surfaced, but they're all lifeboats as well as the other red enemies on the map. What a great start to a great game!

Continued...
After I sank the Ise it was time to RTB to Soerabaia. Decided to stop by my old port of Manila which had recently fallen, just for sh*ts and giggles and to see what the Japs were up to. Was very interesting...
I sailed in surfaced just to see what would happen. Passed a couple Jap merchants and a sub chaser on the way in, nothing happened. As I approached Cavite, a single shore battery opened up on me and didn't score a single hit.
Sailing into Manila proper, there were 2 Small Old Tankers and a sub chaser tied up at the docks.
Here's what I did to one of the tankers:
http://home.triad.rr.com/llambeth/Manila%201.jpg
http://home.triad.rr.com/llambeth/Manila%202.jpg
This was done with the deck gun, can't afford to waste torpedos ;) You can see me there in the distance.
Next I went to the other side of the harbor to take out the sub chaser and the other tanker. Engaged the sub chaser 1st, also with deck guns. She'd ignored me the whole time since I arrived but after 2 or 3 hits she finally woke up ;) She fired about 15 rounds before going to the bottom and scored 2 minor hits on me.
The tanker got the loving attention of my deck gun next and joined her Jap buddies on the bottom in short order.
While I was taking out the tanker, shots were whizzing over my head from a DD that had gotten the word and was closing from the other side of the harbor - finally, the Japs are gonna mount a response? I put the last of my deck gun ammo into her as she charged in on me, and here is the result:
http://home.triad.rr.com/llambeth/The%20Enemy%20Above.jpg
Seems like I've seen this before? I think in "The Enemy Below" at the end of the movie...
At this point, I've got minor damage to 2 diesel engines and the main pump, minor damage to the conning tower bulkhead, sonar stack and attack periscope. Strangely, despite the fact that the bow of that DD is all over my deck gun, I've got no deck gun damage showing??!?!?!
We'll see how it plays out, I've had so many interruptions since I started these posts (starting just as I took that last screenshot) that I guess I won't find out 'till later how it all turns out...
Have I mentioned how much I love SH4 despite her many "blemishes"?

Cavite Bay
S-36
0900 hrs,
Depart for patrol area.
Open orders, patrol Phillipines. (should be a nice quick one)
12 hours later, main patrol objective completed.
No enemy sighted.
19:00 hrs
New orders, engage enemy shipping.
Decemeber 15th
01:05 hrs.
Lookout spots enemy warship at 038, long range.
Dive to periscope depth, slow to 1/3, up scope, many fat merchants come into view.
Get past first destroyer, now in convoy.
Line up 2 large merchies, fire 4 torps, dive to reload and wait for the fun to begin.
2 torps miss, and 2 do not explode :damn:
Back to periscope depth, up scope and looking for more targets.
CRASH DIVE, destroyer at 180, approaching fast, (and did you know they use their signal lamps, I saw him calling his buddies over to the Depth Charge party)
Survive the first pattern with only deck gun damaged
Just as I am passing thermal layer (crew told me) we get hammered:o
All of a sudden, Bulkheads collapsing, flooding, diesel motors damaged etc.
BLOW BALLAST, emergency surface, alas, it was not to be
We sank to 387 feet and the room started spinning and the last thing I saw was my boat fading into black...

http://www.drusek.uni.cc/screenshots/temp/sh3.jpg
Interesting question. Possible answers:
1) The ship is upside-down, perhaps the IJN captain always wanted to be a Zero pilot and attempted a snap roll with disastrous results?
2) The ship has capsized and by some miracle come to rest on the bottom, balanced on the tip of the mast?
3) The forward turret is still firmly in place despite the fact it should have ripped loose and fallen to the sea floor?
4) The lifeboat is still hanging "downwards" in relation to the davit, though it should be hanging "upwards"?
5) The seaplane is still firmly attached to the catapult rail?
That's all I can come up with, how'd I do?

88% realism with manual TDC, using Flavoured to Taste and Realistic Battery mods.
January 1, 1944
Departed Pearl Harbour in command of USS Bowfin, a Balao Class Fleet Submarine. She is submariner’s submarine, outfitted with all the latest technology and modernizations. Her low profile cut down conning tower sports a twin 20mm AA gun forward and a 40MM AA gun on the cigarette deck. Aft of the conning tower is a 4” gun. On her masts she has the new improved SD radar and the SJI radar set. The guys at Pearl painted her in the latest camouflage scheme, light blue-grey sides with black deck and hull, the ideal combination for avoiding visual detection the surface and submerged. There are a lot of greenhorns on the crew, but I recruited a competent cadre of Chiefs and Petty Officers to keep them on course.
We set course for the Carolinas, where we have been ordered to patrol for enemy shipping. We have a refuelling base at Tulagi, so I am not worried too much about conserving fuel. All ahead full.
January 5, 0910 hours
2,238NM West of Pearl. Dove to avoid SD contact. Continued transit submered at 3.5 knots.
January 6, 1441 hours
Surfaced after a 29 hour, 31 minute submerged transit. Battery almost fully depleted, but boy this boat has sea legs! Crew appreciating the fresh air, and I allowed small groups to have a smoke top side. Continued transit on the surface.
January 9, 0600
3,387NM East South East of Pearl Harbour. Picked up allied Task Force on SJ radar West of our position. Continuing transit to patrol area.
1415 Hours
Dove for closing SD contact.
January 10, 1956 Hours
Surfaced again after 29 hours, 41 minutes submerged at 3.5 knots. Distance covered was about 102 nautical miles. Who needs a snorkel with battery endurance like this?
January 12, 0010 Hours
Now on station in the Carolinas. No contacts.
1450 Hours
Received radio report of Japanese convoy about 80NM North west of us, on SSW course. Plotted their track and anticipated progress at medium speed, as well as an intercept course for us. We are just 48NM from the track intercept. All ahead flank!
1750 Hours
Seas calm. Visibility good. Patrolling along the convoy’s plotted track when first SJ radar contact made with enemy. Convoy is ahead and closing, composed of 6 merchants and 3 escorts. Went to radar depth and started the target plot with radar information and some basic math on the chart. Radar indicates that the convoy is on base course 195 degrees, at 9 knots. Range is 9.5NM and closing. Updated convoy plot and ownship’s ideal firing position plot. Moving into position for a submerged attack from starboard side of convoy inside the destroyer screen.
1857 Hours
Now in position. Electric motors are at “All Stop”. Escort in the van sighted on the horizon. Shut down the radar sets and went to periscope depth. Rigged for silent running. All quiet in the boat now.
1909 Hours
First merchant sighted. Sounded Battle Stations Torpedo! Lowered the attack scope. I will continue to monitor the convoy’s progress based on sound bearings intersecting with convoy’s plotted base track.
1929 Hours
Something is NOT right. Sound bearings are not matching the anticipated convoy progress on the base course at 9 knots. Up scope for a quick look see. THE CONVOY HAS ZIGGED! Convoy is now on South East course away from me.
1930 Hours
No chance of a submerged pursuit. I set course of 230 degrees and ahead 1/3 to open the range before surfacing to do an end around on the new convoy track. Was this a fluke, or was I somehow detected? Damn! Looks like we will be having a night attack some time later tonight. Secured from battle stations and silent running. Crew sighed, half in frustration, half in relief.
2000 Hours
Two escorts closing fast and pinging! How the hell? Ordered emergency deep not a second too soon. One escort passed right overhead and dropped a load of depth charges that bracketed us on the first run. Fortunately, they went off overhead as we passed 296 feet on the way down to 450 feet. Shook the boat, and the crew, up a bit, but no damage. Can’t understand how they are on to us like that. Are we leaking oil?
2009 Hours
Another round of depth charges, this time even closer I think. Boat shook again, but still no damage thankfully. The experienced cadre on board have some grave concerns about the Japanese fellows overhead. It looks like the enemy has their top ranked sub busting destroyer crews working this convoy tonight. Taking her down to 500 feet. Lucky rabbit’s foot is in hand, and all eyes are turned upwards waiting…
2012 Hours
More depth charges, though not as close this time. No damage. At ahead dead slow and silent running, course 220 degrees.
2021 Hours
Now levelled off at 496 feet. More pinging and depth charges, though still further. On same course and speed.
2028 Hours
More depth charges, still further. It definitely looks like they’ve lost the scent.
2031 Hours
Depth charging far off. We are now 5.3NM from convoy, based on current sound bearing intersect with convoy’s newly plotted track.
2047 Hours
Attacking escorts appear to be rejoining the convoy.
2101 Hours
It’s been 30 minutes since the last depth charge, and sonar reports the escorts have rejoined the convoy to the East. Ordered “periscope depth”.
2109 Hours
Raised the attack ‘scope. One visual contact on the horizon bearing 220 degrees relative, too distant to ID.
2131 Hours
Went to radar depth to gather information to update the plot. Convoy is still on the new track, now zig-zagging. Base course is 155 degrees. Nearest escort is 6.7NM away. At least with them zig-zagging, the end around will be faster.
2156 Hours
Surfacing! All ahead full. Plotted end around and intercept PIM.

Can someone help me find a software peice which allows me to record from the screen and audio too?
Thanks.
My sub kept going down thou...after countless orders to my men to bring the sub to the surface, I figured out that it must be because my front compartment was flooding...
So after I realized this...I set the engine to full revers and finally began to head back to the surface in a 45 degree angle at 3 knots. It took forver for my crew to fix the leak, and then they began to drain the water which also took a very long time. I was forced then to try to run down the ships in reverse and I used my four back torpedos on the closest ship.
S!
Damage and flooding forward:damn: , so he was "forced" to chase down and attack the enemy IN REVERSE!:o
Now that is on seriously aggressive skipper. Well done. Here is your MOH. My hat's off to you!

(Continued from Above)
January 13, 0028 Hours
Now sitting at all stop on the convoy's new track, waiting for it to come into view. Radar is still tracking them North West of us. The boat is gently riding the swells, the diesels softly murmuring at idle. The smoking lamp is out on deck. I am taking not chances after the last aborted approach.
0035 Hours
Convoy is close enough to dive now. Bowfin quiets slips below the surface and waits, a hole in the water. She is rigged for silent running, at all stop. The only sound is the soft hum of the NAV gyros. Lighting is rigged for red. The entire crew is wondering if Bowfin will take her revenge this time.
0046 Hours
Convoy coming into visual range with the attack ‘scope now. I am slight out of position in relation to the convoys predicted plot, and order back 1/3, “and make that quietly now!’
0105 Hours
Position is good. “All stop!” Starting the plot. Convoy is in same formation, 4 merchants line abreast, trailed by two centred and back, with three escorts arranged at front and sides for formation. According to my plot on the main chart, convoy course is still 155 degrees, speed 9 knots. They are no longer zig-zagging. I decide to take the lead starboard side ship, a medium freighter, and the lead ship one column in, a small freighter. I start the target plots on both. For the first target, when she is at the firing point, the angle on the bow will be starboard 53, range 1nm, speed 9 knots. The chart is a mess of plot and range lines and circles. The targets are approaching the plotted firing points fast. Time is running out. I use the same solution for the second target, adjusting the range by periscope stadimeter.
0115 Hours
Time to shoot! Taking the second target first, as she leads from the aspect of my firing point. Final bearing and range is taken by periscope and fed to the TDC.
“Fire 1! Adjust 1 degree spread left! Fire 2! Adjust 1 degree spread right! Fire 3! Shifting targets to closer target 1! Bearing, mark! Range, mark! Fire 4!” wait… “Fire 5!” wait… “Fire 6!”
All bow tubes are empty, and I go to check the the stop watch when there is a loud CRUNCH, BOOM! First torpedo has hit the far target! Cheers in the boat! I spin the periscope back to that target. There is a small amount of flame and smoke.
CRUNCH, BOOM! A water geyser shoots up, the ship visibly slows, and then another huge explosion (secondary) and fire ball! That ship is done for. The third torpedo does not hit, apparently missing aft.
I put the attack scope back on the near target in time to see torpedo 4 hit her ¼ back from the bow. CRUNCH, BOOM! Another flash, and geyser of water, this time middle of target. Flames and smoke now. CRUNCH, BOOM! Torpedo 6 takes her right in the bow, almost missing forward. The ship explodes and sinks quickly. The time is 0118 hours, 13th of January, 1944. USS Bowfin has made her first kills.
Five out of six hits. Not bad for manual TDC if I do say so myself. I order down scope, ahead 1/3, right full rudder, and take her down to 440 feet. It is time to clear out before the escorts are on me again.
0130 Hours
The escorts seem to be off their game this time. Maybe Bowfin has broken their confidence. There is no pinging, no depth charges. The escorts appear to be manoeuvring about according to sonar bearings, while the convoy continues on. I continue to creep away at 440 feet, ahead dead slow, still on silent running. The crew is all smiles now.
0512 Hours
The convoy has moved on, and are just edging out of passive sonar range. The escorts never found us. I order us to PD for a quick look.
0520 Hours
No ships in sight. Going to radar depth for a sweep. Nothing on radar. “Surface!”
0527 Hours
Convoy regained on radar, 16.2 nautical miles South East of us. The sun will be rising soon, but two Japanese freighters will never see the rising sun again.
The day is young. Bowfin continues the hunt…
Sadly, Bowfin was lost less than 6 hours later when, after being forced off the approach on a Fuso Battleship, she came under furious depth charge attack by multiple escorts. She survived the first few rounds unscathed, but a near miss caused flooding in the forward torpedo room as she crept along at 480 feet. Repair teams went to work, and she increased speed to compensate for flooding. A second round of charges proved deadly, destroying a section of hull in the aft torpedo room. No amount of emergency blowing at that point could reverse her slowly sinking, and her hull imploded at 729 feet at 1119 hours, January 13, 1944.
RIP Bowfin.
A sad moment in a great sim.

Glad you liked the story. I enjoyed writing it. Since I was a kid I've always liked submarines, and in particular, the US fleet boats. The Lt. Cmdr. "Hinman" of the Bowfin (in my story, not in RL) was a tribute to a fictional WWII US submarine captain an author named Harry Homewood wrote a novel about. The novel was called Final Harbour, and it hooked me on US fleet boats when I was young. Sadly, his books are out of print.
I expect I'll contribute more stories soon. I'm playing SH4 in most of my free time.
Cheers.

Swat, your pictures are lovely; I mean really good! I especially love the battleship shot.
It just drives me crazy when I see the lack of research on the part of the devs. Midway has (and had) no lighthouses, no breakwater, no buildings to speak of, and most definitely no harbor!
There was an airstrip and a couple of docks. Submarines and destroyers could refuel there, but no battleships that I'm aware of. I wish they'd get these things right.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4b/Midway_Atoll.jpg
Midway, November 1941.
You're definitely right, but I think it would take much longer to develop the game with the accurate appearance of all the ports and harbors. We should not forget that it's still the game, for more demanding players - good simulation, but nobody is perfect.:hmm:
Actually, I deleted the airfield(s)/port object from Midway and it looks much better. I also eliminated almost all the harbor traffic.
ANY lighthouse with the lights on during the war is absurd, BTW.
As for the devs and Midway, the midway airfields/harbor is comprised of 2 special objects just for Midway. They worked HARD to make Midway that awful, it would have looked more accurate devoid of any additions at all.

:rotfl: All the times I've admired the lighthouses in SH3 (and SH1 in Manila Bay) and I never thought of that.:88) You're right, of course.
As for the devs and Midway, the midway airfields/harbor is comprised of 2 special objects just for Midway. They worked HARD to make Midway that awful, it would have looked more accurate devoid of any additions at all.
After saying bad things to start this off, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. They probably just wanted to add the usual 'harbor stuff', and didn't think about it at all. As long as it can ultimately be fixed, I'm happy.

One of the things I like to do when inside a convoy is to mingle with the merchants while avoiding the destroyers to throw off their depth charge runs. However, getting under a cripple can have very bad results...

Just started a fresh career after abusing USS Finback a bit to much.
I know serve on USS Seahorse (Balao class).
After a 34000 tonnage patrol, I recieved the medal of honor :-?
Cool to add to my collection.. only a bit to much if you ask me.
I just sank 8 merchants, 1 tanker and 1 warship.
I did complete my mission.

USS S-40
SS-145
8 Dec 41 - Departed Cavite Naval Base with orders to patrol the Luzon Strait 07:00.
11 Dec 41 - Enemy vessel spotted 00:13. Sounded battle stations and dove to periscope depth. Vessel identified as merchantman, approximately 4000 tons, making 9 knots. Plotted attack course with 87 degree AOB. Fired one torpedo at 1000 yards which impacted just aft of smokestack. Her stern settled low in the water and came to a complete stop. After surveying immediate area with observation scope, surfaced the boat and engaged with deck gun. Fired four rounds of AP into her stern at 700 yards. Secondary fires started and she sank by the stern 01:04. Secured from battle stations and returned to course.
11 Dec 41 - Aircraft spotted 08:22. Sounded battle stations and crash dove to 165'. No attack detected. Secured from battle stations and surfaced the boat 09:31.
11 Dec 41 - Aircraft spotted 15:30. Sounded battle stations and crash dove to 180'. No attack detected. Secured from battle stations and surfaced the boat 16:35.
13 Dec 41 - Enemy vessel spotted 15:11. Sounded battle stations and dove to periscope depth. Vessel identified as merchantman, approximately 4000 tons, making 9 knots. Plotted attack course with 90 degree AOB. One torpedo fired at 850 yards, impacting amidship. Detonation caused secondary explosions and superstructure on fire. Ship sank 15:42. Returned to course
13 Dec 41 - Enemy warship detected 22:46. Sounded battle stations and dove to periscope depth. Vessel identified as Mutsuki class destroyer screening a small convoy of four merchantmen transiting the Luzon Strait at 9 knots. Disengaged and plotted parallel course. Secured from battle stations, surfaced the boat and went to flank speed.
14 Dec 41 - Reacquired convoy 02:35. Sounded battle stations and dove to periscope depth. Dove to 195' at 1 knot as lead destroyer passed above. Surfaced to periscope depth and fired three torpedoes at three different merchantmen ranged 700, 1100 and 2000 yards. Torpedo one and three impacted simultaneously, causing secondary fires and both merchantmen stopped dead in the water. Torpedo two impacted 7 seconds later causing massive secondary explosions and vessel sank almost immediately. Fired one torpedo each at damaged vessels. Both torpedoes impacted resulting in both vessels sinking rapidly. Dove to 185' and disengaged at 4 knots. No depth charge attacks launched. Secured from battle stations and surfaced the boat 05:30. Returned to course.
14 Dec 41 - Aircraft spotted 08:00. Sounded battle stations and crash dove to 155'. No attack detected. Secured from battle stations and surfaced the boat 09:15.

Vessel identified as Shiratsuyu class destroyer screening a battleship task force at 11 knots: 9 Shiratsuyu class destroyers, 2 Kongo class battleships, 1 Takao class heavy cruiser and 1 Mogami class heavy cruiser. Plotted parallel course, surfaced the boat and went to flank speed. Remained within visual range of destroyer screen. At 23:02, dove to 182' and plotted attack course of 90 degrees AOB. Passed under destroyer screen, surfaced to periscope depth and fired three torpedoes at second Kongo in line at 650 yards range. All three torpedoes impacted, battleship capsized and sank 23:37. Fired one torpedo at Takao class heavy cruiser at 700 yards. Torpedo impacted amidship causing secondary explosions and significant fires on superstructure. Cruiser began zig zagging at 11 knots. Dove to 197' and pursued at flank speed while final torpedo was being loaded. Two salvos of six depth charges launched. All exploded aft or shallow, causing no damage. Surfaced to periscope depth and fired final torpedo at Takao class cruiser at 00:05 at 1400 yards range. Torpedo impacted port side aft. Cruiser sank by the stern to amidship then capsized 00:08. Dove to 197', plotted course back to Cavite Naval Base and disengaged at 4 knots. Secured from battle stations and surfaced the boat 01:38.

Medium Freighter Sydney Maru - 5412 tons
Medium Freighter Hidaka Maru - 5497 tons
Medium Freighter Konzan Maru - 5497 tons
Medium Freighter Misaki Maru - 4474 tons
Kongo class Battleship Haruna - 32000 tons
Takao class Heavy Cruiser Takao - 15870 tons
Awards
2 Distinguished Service Medals
1 Silver Star
Author's Note: This is by far the most historically satisfying patrol I've done yet. The battleship task force was the IJN Second Fleet Main Force almost exactly - cut the number of destroyers in half and both heavy cruisers were Takao class. It was in the right place, just at the wrong time - it was a week early. It should have been off the north coast of Borneo. The composition of the invasion force was all wrong - too many heavy cruisers, not enough light cruisers and destroyers and was also a week early but the fact that I found an invasion force is astounding to me. December 15th, about 6 miles off the coast of Alaminos for those of you who want to try to find it.

Cheers.
You know what's funny? The curator for the USS Bowfin museum in Hawaii is Mr. Charles R. Hinman.

Nice shots man:rock: I have the USS Drum now. Patrol 5 and counting. Must be the skipper...he knows what he is doing;)
I also got Drum after three patrols in Tambor (I think it was). So far I've made 5 war patrols with her sinking just over 200 000 tons (including Yamato on the third patrol in Drum). I'm very proud of both myself and the Drum considering this is my first full career using manual TDC.

In the beginning of your career you are adressed as Lt.Cmdr. when given a vessel but further???
I started the career in Porpoise Class - USS Perch.Made three patrols with her, then I got Tambor Class - USS Tuna for one patrol so now my fifth patrol is still in progress and it's with USS Drum - Gato Class.Love patrols in SH4 - thank to the possibility to visit for example Midway for resupply, those patrols are pretty long....

My orders are to carry a group of special forces from Manilla, to the other side of the mainland. "Strange," I thought to myself...."Why don't they just take a land vehicle?" We found out after just a few short hours of traveling up the coast. Radio messages starting flying in about a Japanese invasion of the Philippines. "Sir, multiple Radar contacts!" I thought to myself...This is it. This could be an invasion task force.
Sure enough...A screen of about 8 cruisers and destroyers was escorting 6 troop transports from the Chinese mainland to partake the invasion of the Philippines. DAMN...Only 4 fish up front on this pig...It'l have to do. I lay into those troop transports with all 4 fish...
lol funny story 'cause I believe I started with 1. That exact boat, Name and all. 2. Exact mission. Transport across to the other side of the damn island. and 3. Ran into that exact same task force/convoy. Sadly for me I ran into a glitch mid way into my setup and the game crashed. Went back to where I'd saved earlier and attempted to intercept the convoy again but missed them. Maybe things aren't as random as they appear?

You know what's funny? The curator for the USS Bowfin museum in Hawaii is Mr. Charles R. Hinman.
Actually, I discovered that as well after searching for Bowfin information on-line. I didn't even realise there was a Bowfin museum until then. It would have been more of a coincidence if Homewood had named his fictional submarine Bowfin (but then, it wouldn't have been so fictional). The sub in the book was the USS Mako, which never existed to my knowledge.

PATROL REPORT
U.S.S. POLLACK SS-180
1ST. WAR PATROL
DECEMBER 10, 1941 – FEBRUARY 1, 1942
LCDR. R. E. CHAMBERLAIN, COMMANDING
DEC. 10, 1941
1625 Departure Pearl Harbor, TH with orders to insert agent into Katsuura, Japan. Maneuvering Watch set.
1637 Cleared harbor and put to sea. Relieved Maneuvering Watch. Underway at 2/3 Bell, making 11 Knots. Set course to Midway Island for fuel stop.
DEC. 11, 1941
1800 Received radio message that Germany and Italy have declared war on the United States! Also, Japanese forces were turned back at Wake Island by our forces. Way to go!
DEC. 12, 1941
1803 Watch spotted a freighter off our port beam heading ESE. We do not think that he saw us. We continued course and speed as not to make contact. 22.38.7N, 164.47.5W.
2101 Received Fox Traffic from COMSUBPAC advising Japanese invasion of Borneo.
DEC. 16, 1941
0600 Refueled at Midway Island. Proceeding West. Heavy seas.
2003 Received Fox Traffic from COMSUBPAC advising Japanese landing on Borneo.
DEC. 23, 1941
1800 Received Fox Traffic from COMSUBPAC advising that a second Japanese attempt to take Wake Island was successful. We ran on the surface today at STANDARD Bell in an attempt to make up some time. There was nothing sighted all day.
DEC. 25, 1941
0753 Merry Christmas! It is hard to keep in good spirits, as many of the crewmembers are still upset over losing Wake Island. We have been at sea for 15 days, and expect to make our objective in about 10 days. I will be glad to drop this guy off! The crew is anxious to bring the fight to the Japs. I am sure they will get their chance soon enough. Fuel supply at 80%. Munitions at 100%. Maintaining radio silence. We are still in heavy seas, and our speed has been averaging at about 7 Knots on the surface.
DEC. 26, 1941
2048 Changing course to heading 294 for better sea keeping. This will place us North of our objective, but will allow us to make better headway with the waves. Fuel is at 79%, and we are at STANDARD Bell making 14 Knots. Christmas dinner was excellent, and the leftovers even better!
JAN. 5, 1942
0210 Arrived at our objective off the Katsuura coast. All stop submerged then slowly raised to periscope depth. No contacts observed, we surfaced and deployed the agent in a rubber raft. Submerged to periscope depth to observe agent and watch for enemy contact. No enemy observed, insertion was a success!
2229 Made contact with Japanese freighter Kasagisan Maru. Reported contact to COMSUBPAC and awaited orders. Received orders to engage enemy freighter. Freighter changed course, new solution developed for a shot from the stern tubes. Two fish from stern at high angle made contact! The ship exploded in a magnificent fashion, must have been carrying ammunition. Kasagisan Maru immediately sank with all hands, no survivors. 2,436 tons.
2232 Upon report of our success to COMSUBPAC, we received orders to deploy to the East China Sea for patrol. By 2235, we had our course plotted and were underway. Our current fuel status is at 60%, and we are making 11 Knots on heading 235.
JAN. 6, 1942
0007 Watch detected a ship moving NE, plotted a course to intercept and identify.
0755 Watch reported a small enemy convoy consisting of two large modern composite freighters. Reported to COMSUBPAC and awaited orders.
0810 Began surface attack run. At 0817 sunk Nagara Maru with the deck gun. 7,235 tons. Turned and went after the other freighter. Sunk with deck gun at 0819. 7,190 tons. Lifeboats in the water. We left the area and resumed patrol.
JAN. 7, 1942
0818 Engaged Japanese convoy with numerous merchants escorted by two destroyers. Setup on two merchant ships, expended two torpedoes each. No hits! Left the rear of the convoy running silent. Reloaded tubes and resumed patrol.
JAN. 9, 1942
0142 Watch spotted a huge European liner, we plot course to intercept and identify.
0200 Engage liner Conte Verde with the deck gun. She went down with all hands. 18,765 tons.
JAN. 10, 1942
1735 Arrive to station in East China Sea. Sonar reports a contact, fast screws. Contact is identified as a warship. We plot course to intercept and investigate.
1900 Warship contact has changed course, is long range and heading away from us. We break off the chase and resume patrol.
JAN. 15, 1942
1951 Engaged Japanese merchant ship Akita Maru with two torpedoes. One hit and one dud. Sunk with deck gun. 4,169 tons.
JAN. 16, 1942
1353 Crash dive to avoid two aircraft flying North. We are making our way home. May have enough fuel to make Midway Island.
JAN. 29, 1942
0430 Arrive Midway Island, and carefully make way into harbor. Two PT boats had collided near the entrance and are ablaze. All crew are off the boats, so no assistance from our boat was required. We refit with fuel and torpedoes and decide to wait for daylight before we depart.
0645 Depart Midway Island bound for Pearl Harbor, TH.
FEB. 1, 1942
1022 Approaching Pearl Harbor, TH. Set maneuvering watch before entering channel.
1100 At dock, Pearl Harbor, TH. End of patrol. Total tonnage sunk, 39,795 tons.
Respectfully,
LCDR. R. E. Chamberlain

Remember the USS Tang?
This happened at night, on patrol 2, in fact this was the result of the FIRST TORPEDO of patrol 2...I had a merchant lined up in the darkness and decided to give her the gifts contain within tube 1.
When the torpedo fired it banked to about 30, with the target at about 45 and heading slow this didn't concern me.
Untill a minute later.
http://www.freewebs.com/ak420/torpedo0.jpg
http://www.freewebs.com/ak420/torpedo1.jpg
http://www.freewebs.com/ak420/torpedo2.jpg
Except the Sargo lived, and sank it's target.
I hit flank speed and fired tubes 2,3, & 4. 2 & 3 exploded prematurely, 3 exploded so close that it enshrouded the Sargo in it's spray....4 hit but ran late, before 4 even hit I was on the merchant with the deck gun determined to get something in my patrol aside from...myself.
Yes, the torpedo rudder apparently jammed hard starboard and it almost completed a perfect circle....untill it hit my Sargo class midships.
The only gameplay enhancing mod that I was using was incidently enough the 25% more powerful torpedo mod, and this was with a Mark14 torpedo.
I made it all the way back to port at flank speed, sank another ship with the deck gun, and amazingly noone died.
Also managed to get a Purple Heart incidently enough...

That must've been an influence detonation because a Mk14 on contact should've just rip the sub in half.

It should of done that anyways, isn't that where the fuel tank should have been?
In the first patrol the Swordfish took a shell directly in the Tube 4 door...luckily I was out of foreward torpedos when it happened.

They apparently do exist. What a nasty surprise I had when I was cruising into a harbor after dispatching the destroyer guarding it. Confidently at radar depth, 5 knots when *CRASH* "We're taking damage, sir" "We have heavy flooding, sir" "Meeeediiiic!!" "We have critical flooding, sir" *Plays taps* I was half-way through the freaking sub net. Some sort of magical cloaking device, I suppose. (a-la ST:TNG)
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb93/kikn79/Subnet-Rabul.jpg
I also found several mines there, too. On my next try (after the mandatory 5 minute respawn penality for TK'ing myself) I was a bit more careful and missed this mine by mere feet.

Slightly off topic:
Its always amazed me why Belgium is used as a measuring device for ecological distasters, e.g:
1) Today a piece of the Ross Ice Shelf broke away, about the size of Belgium.
2) Each year we consume a forest the size of Belgium just for printer paper.
I mean its a bit unfair on the poor Belgians if you ask me, both Walloons and Flemish speakers. Especially considering how bravely they fought in WWII.
Erm...Opps

Circle running fish are a nightmare, I've been KIA twice because of them. Torpedo impact! "You are dead" lol, great little touch. After that experience I now know to change depth for a few seconds before going back to PD (so that any circle runners will just go over you).

Yeah it sure does but next time change your pics to .JPEG before posting please.
"GIF Image" are a waste of space and takes forever to load on some peoples computer. And if the person is on "Dial-Up" ( many still out there ) he/she will probably not want to wait and go somewhere else therefore not even seeing your pics.

@Elder-Pirate.. I always thought that gif and jpeg were roughly the same size.

Hi there,
I just begin my first campaign with RFB1.28 in early December.
I have been assigned to USS Tambor out of Pearl Harbor.
First mission: war patrol in Marshalls Islands... nothing. I have learnt the war was begun when I was in sea...
Second mission: war patrol in China Sea... After one month in sea, I have sunk three cargos and one warship: the CV Shokaku with three torpedoes... but couldn't patrol enough in the area assigned to my sub. On the contrary, I'm obliged to return back because lack of fuel.
Well, when I'm back to Pearl, I receive a medal and a lot of points of renowned... good.
First surprise! Nothing has been written in the Captain's Log book... where is my victory with the Shokaku!
Second surprise... CINPAC order again to patrol the same area in China Sea...
What's wrong? Am I really obliged to do the mission in order to progress in the campaign and to see Captain's Log completed?
Thanks for your opinions...

@Elder-Pirate.. I always thought that gif and jpeg were roughly the same size.
Only different texture compression.
The big problem with my uploaded shots was the size. I forgot to resize them to 800x600. Thats done now.. hope it works better.
@Rose.. I have everything up (minus fog). The beauty is that I only have a medium PC.. AMD64 3000+, 2GB ram, 7600GT 256 GPU.
The only mods I use in the pictures are
* My high-res skins
* TM
* Officer hat and uniforms by captain cox
* bowwave and tower graphic by captain cox
Ahh, it must be the high-res skins. Amazing. I'll have to DL them . How is your frame-rate?

There's quite a bit of difference if you have "Dial-UP" ( as I mentioned in other post ), It may take 5 minutes to load one GIF Image pic of 237,000 bytes at 800 x 600 resolution while 2 sec using high speed Internet. Your pic at 237,004 bytes 800 x 600 useing GIF Image below:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/oleman/screen61gif.gif
And my copy changed to JPEG at 800 x 600 resolution and only 36,253 bytes.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/oleman/screen61.jpg
Compare the pics. the JPEG the "Dial-Up" person will choose, the GIF Image He/She will probably not. Also it saves space here on the forum. Neal pays enough now.
Its just another couple seconds and a few more buttons to change the pics to JPG and upload. Use Paint if nothing else on your computer, it works just fine.

I still go for CRT because they look so much sharper..
*******ing A! :nope:
OK . . . so I have a medium sized convoy heading right at me . . . I open all my torpedo doors, set proper depths for target, and drop to 100 ft depth . . . and rig for silent running . . . all of a sudden, even though I have nothing active, I get pinged out of the blue . . . depth charged with little notice . . . and start taking aft damage . . . I start repairs, try to quietly get out of dodge, hoping the prop noise from the merchants behind the lead DD which detected me would muffle my escape . . . and the flooding gets me past crush depth . . . no choice, I gotta blow balast tanks . . . basically I was going to be shot up by the dd screen.
*******ing A!
Time to reload the last save point 10 game days in the past!
I don't see what I did wrong, I lined up to my targets, I went silent and had nothing running . . . just bad luck I guess . . . but still pisses me off :damn:
So I reload the game, and steam elsewhere, and my radar man picks up a Task Force with a good angle of attack . . . and the weather is miserable, you can barely see past the bow of the ship . . . middle of the night, rain that looks like chalk streaks, all to the nines . . . and all of a sudden from my aft a destroyer comes barrellings at me at flank speed, I go to battle stations, and go emergency reverse . . . bamb . . . we colide she goes to my starboard and passes me, fire a torp for good measure . . . boom she goes up in flames . . . second destoyer comes from my aft . . . not even two minutes after the first . . . bamb . . . we collide, and she goes to by port . . . she goes past me and dissapears in to the night . . . so far no damage, no casualties . . . another two minutes past . . . and out of the darkness with her search lights blaring comes another destoyer . . . my deck gun ablazing . . . bamb . . . we collide again . . . this time all the bells and wistles start going of damage here . . . injuries here . . . massive flooding . . . she passes me I fire a torp . . . he lights up like a dry christmas tree on New Years . . . two ships down . . . I am barely staying a float . . . damage everywhere, all but the front torpedo room damaged, and flooding . . . so several hours pass . . . damage control progressing slower then a slug on a treadmill . . . and I am keeping a float by periodically blowing the ballast tanks . . . dawn comes . . . and I am still socked in with fog . . . and out of no where a Yamato class comes past my bow . . . I fire two fish, both hit at 15ft . . . and she continues to steam along like nothing happened . . . then from my port side an Isa class BB comes barelling down at me . . . and the crunch sound begins in earnest . . . flooding, once level, but deadly . . . starts on all sections, save the front torpedo room, my nose sticking out like the Tower of Pisa . . . and I hear them say the thing when a ship sinks . . . I look at the map . . . and low and behold the Isa is destroyed . . . but her weight takes her down with me . . .
Time for another reload . . . that was bad @ss  . . . but I'd rather sail to fight another day :nope:
OK . . . third times the charm?:yep: Not quiet :nope:
So I reload the game . . . track the same task force . . . and instead steam further down its course so I can get it closer to dusk . . . and steam fast enough so I am right in her travel paths . . . so I set all six forward torpedoes to 27.5 degress (just in case the rough seas make them go deep) . . . dive to 200 feet, and wait for the DD screen to pass . . . they pass . . . without event . . . and I come to Periscope depth . . . and there the lead ship is . . . the Yamato . . . 1400yds infront of me . . . I reset the torps to fast setting . . . and target the Yamato and the Ise behind her . . . let four fish fly at the Y and 2 at the Ise . . . three hit the Y + 1 dud:x . . . and two hit the Ise . . . I dive deep and head below the remaining passing task force . . . the DDs loose me . . . and I wait two hours (time compressed) to unleash my remaining aft torpedoes (4 in total) . . . still silent running . . . And a Kuma has staid behind while the rest of the TF has sailed off. So I figure . .. why not . . . so I send 2 to the Kuma . . . 1 at 30 to the Y . . . and 1 at 30 at the Ise . . . The Y is dead in the water as in is the Ise (plus a 15 degree Starboard list) . . . all hit . . . and I turn it around and await an hour . . . but low and behold one more torp left . . . I had sunk 5 ships previously in that patrol . . . and apparently ran out without realizing:doh: . . . so I use that last one on the Y at 32 feet depth . . . hit . . . nothing, she remains afloat . . . I spend the rest of the dusk expending all my deck gun ammo at the Ise with no effect . . . leaving with no sinkings to go on my record. :damn:
I am steaming for the nearest tender (at Guadalcanal) and steaming back hoping that they remain . . . doubt it . . . but I will finish my story later, and will tell you al what happens. Pray for me that they remain there dead in the water, once I get new fish. It's a 3100 mile turn around, but here's hoping.

Yah, sorry about that.
Well I steamed to Guadalcanal at Standard . . . and steamed back the same . . . and when I returned . . . no one was left. Where the Yamato was was a grey symbol for a sunken ship, but not the usual read symbol. Furthermore, neither the Yamato or the Ise were added to my sunken ship log. I have never ran into that symbol before, but it was a good try. To bad my fish didn't sink either of those ships. They must have sent out an oceangoing tug from Truk.
Atleast I will be satisfied to know that both ships will take several months in the docks before their guns can lend support down in Guadalcanal again.
In my game it's only mid September '42 so every out of action BB, the better.

My radar operator had previously picked up 2 merchants (frequency set to 8000) and i got into position when the rain squall started . All of a sudden i get a report from the radar operator of another ship.

Hey, Hammer. Thanks. I'm glad you like it. Your right the visuals in this game alone make it worthwhile. Just being able to take the pictures and share them is really just another goody that goes along with the game. HAPPY HUNTING:arrgh!:
Is the heading of this new ship different? If so . . . in the rain squall . . . will you be able to engage the ship? For as posted in my original thread in this posting . . . during really dark rain squalls . . . there's a possibility that visual range maybe reduce to one or tow boat lengths.

It's a bug in the ATi drivers when using asymmetric antialiasing (2x or 6x). Laptop owners may even encounter very bad looking fonts. ATi owners must only use symmetric antialiasing (4x and 8x).

So I'm on my way to the Caroline Islands, 60 ft down, and on TC. I'm in the middle of the Pacific so i guess I'm safe, right? WRONG. Bam-slam-wham-boing-bong-clunk-scrape-screech WE HAVE FLOODING, SIR! MEDIIIC! Sub sunk.
FTW???? Bungo Pete out here, DC-ing me? I load my save (made 5 minutes earlier), and I go slowly to the approximate position where I sank, at PD and keeping the same heading. All i see on the map is this:
http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/9876/wtf0uk5.jpg
Hmmm... what's that spec, at my 10 o'clock? Let's zoom in:
http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/893/wtf1oh7.jpg
Okay, aside from the fact that this is proof that we evolved from the primordial soup and that evolution is obviously still going on, it seems I might have hit a sand bank or reef. So I go to the esxternal cam as I'm passing right over it, and I see this HUUUGE mountain ridge smack dab in the middle of the Pacific:
http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/669/wtf2fn7.jpg
http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/4915/wtf3jx5.jpg
Note that you CAN pass it safely at PD at no more than SLOW, otherwise you WILL scrape or hit the top of the mountain as the sub bobs up and down at higher speeds. This was at PD and FULL speed:
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/5323/wtf4ty8.jpg
I saved right after this scrape, and looked in the ActivePlayerUnits.upc file. The damage was Damage=0.042255
The mountains are not continuous, though, but you have to zoom in real close to see where you can pass safely while submerged. These gaps are clear all the way down, so you can sink freely and not hit anything on the way
http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/7301/wtf5bk9.jpg
So just mind where you run silent, run deep, mates!

Edit2: sorted that out. Hey, how come my pics suck vs. everyone else's?

Here is account of my first battle using 100% realism settings.
S-38 was one day out of Surabaya on its second patrol. We came in from the first patrol with an empty net. There were a couple sightings. The first on the Luzon Strait. We were pretty close, a destroyer and unother ship of unknown type. The sea was pretty heavy and could only catch glances between the waves. I could never really get a fix on either ship and as quickly as they appeared they were gone. While heading back to Manila we got order to change home base to Surabaya. It was on the way there, in the South China Sea, when a watch yells "Ship spotted, Sir!". There was what must have been an escorted convoy off on the horizon. We chased that convoy long into the night but it stayed on the horizon the time til it to disapeared.
So on this second patrol I was beginning to think this war was going to consist of nothing but chasing ghosts. That until we heard orders for all boats to converge on java, an invasion force was reported headed that way. Like I said we were only one day out and headed to patrol the Celebes Sea. We immediately reversed course and returned the way we came. Halfway back we got a radio report of enemy task force. A quick look at the chart showed the task force only 20nm away on a coarse that would lead it right to us. For two days we hunted for those ships, but again, ghosts. We had wasted to much time here, the sea was again heavy, so I gave orders to set a course back to the Celebes Sea. It was only an hour latter, the boat bouncing on the surface, the sea so rough that even I was getting seasick for the first time, that a watchmen again yells, "Ship spotted, Sir!".
This time it was not ghosts on a dark horizon. It was two warships in day light bearing straight for us. I then wished they were ghosts because it was obvious that they had spotted us before we spotted them. "periscope depth!" I ordered.
Now through the periscope only glances could be seen. Ok, they must be destroyers, but what type. The glances though the waves are to brief. I decide to guess. I chose Fubuki. Now I got to get a distance, but I'm only getting brief glimpses, and the ships are looming larger, looking like they know exactly where we are. I try to steady myself. Patience. Now as they get closer the mastheads show above the waves for a longer time. I lock on the closer ship. Now, if I can only get a distance. Then a miracle happens, an opening in the waves, and looking out my periscope at what seems a valley of water, I get a clear view. At the same time I see that the trailing warship has turned to port as if to cut off my escape to the rear. The waves close around me, but now I have an ID. My guess was wrong . The Warships are not Fubuki class, they are Akizuki. I await another opening. Time is slowing down. Another opening. I have a distance on the leader! 600 yds. I quickly estimate AOB. 500 yds! I punch in 16 knots. I set a torpedo 5 left. launch! Set to 0. Launch! Set to 5 right. Launch! Set to 10 right. Launch! I hear spashes. I spin the periscope. The other ship is right behind me. Dive! Hard to port! Then I hear, "Torpedo impact, Sir!". "Enemy Unit destroyed, Sir!".
Ten minutes later I am at periscope depth. I raise the periscope and see the stern of a kuma class light cruiser. By the time I get a fix she is 3500 yds moving away. Another ghost.
