By the quality of those pics you dont need SLI.very nice:up:

Doe's this game even use SLI...
Thanks GF
Been wanting to do SLI for awhile just never had the funds, but will find out later this week if it works good with SH4. Having a bit of the same problem as Armistead I think, strange blueish lines under water. Maybe a pair of cards will cure it.

Sorry to sound noobish.. but what is SLI?
Armistead
01-24-10, 10:31 AM
SLI
Scalable Link Interface, NVIDIA's method for connecting 2 or more video cards together to produce a single output.
I've played with my settings. I can make them go away, but problem is oter details go to crap...I don't take many SS's like that, so I'll deal.
But I didn't have them with real env. I know DUC changed the color and tweaked it more, so maybe that has more to do with it. Still, things reflect and retract underwater, so probably normal.

Thanx you guys...I was hoping for some feedback here, to see if any would be interested in a rusty S-18.
Any progress with the skin Runningdeer?
I'm looking forward to this one, it looks real pretty!

By the cover of night we snug into a small harbor around the Luzon-strait, hydrophones picked up two small vessels patrolling the harbor entrance. In the shallow water there was only a small chance the patrol boats would pick us up with their sonar so we entered the harbor silently.
We took a peek with the periscope and there she was; a beautiful maru sitting stationary in the middle of he harbor. There were also a few other marus docked.
http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/ae234/andre_moonen/SH4Img2010-01-23_153522_421.jpg
The sun was coming up and we didn't want to stay in the shallow harbor too long in daylight so we took position and fired 2 fish, had one dud and the other causing slight damage. The patrols turned out to be two small subchasers and rushed to the entrance of the harbor so we took of at flank speed and while making our escape fired 2 fish at a "medium-something" and it went straight down to davy jones'..
http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/ae234/andre_moonen/SH4Img2010-01-23_173328_578.jpg
As we passed the harbor entrance we alined the aft tubes with the crippled maru and fired...... Both hit and the maru broke in two pieces as she went down.

One subchaser followed us for a while but was unable to get a fix on us so we made a nice clean escape to deeper waters. Only two merchants went down but the men and I were satisfied. :salute:

Part 2 was excellent! :yeah:
USS FINBACK (SS-230) patrolling WNW of Truk in January of 1943; a routine hydrophone check detected a Jap. task force approaching at speed. Stayed on the surface long enough to get a speed/bearing fix, dove and maneuvered into a good firing position. Fired a six-fish fan shot at a Shokaku Class CV; range 3500 yards. We quickly dove to escape, and not hearing explosions we thought that we had missed. One large explosion, followed by two large secondary explosions. Then another few moments later, two more explosions. One of her escorts, turning to search for us, ran into our fan shot, and got hit by two fish originally aimed at the carrier. A lucky day for us.

One of my fondest memories was when my parents first took me to Mobile to see the BB USS ALABAMA and SS USS DRUM. I hardly spent any time looking at the aircraft or the BB. From the moment I first saw her, I was hooked on DRUM. It was almost one of those movie moments where the silhouette is lighted and angels sing in the background.
In fact, I spent so much time crawling all over her, that even after all those years as a museum ship, I wreaked of diesel fuel and my parents had to make the long drive home with the windows down because of how I smelled. So, I joined the ranks of the pig boats at a young age.
Leap forward all these years and I've been proud to help with the preservation and restoration of DRUM. Ever since I played my first SubSim years ago on the NES, I've wanted to at least pretend to command DRUM. SH4 gave me that chance after two War Patrols as CO of USS TAMBOR. Newer commands have come along, but all the Admirals in Washington couldn't pry DRUM away from me.
I left Pearl for my second War Patrol as CO USS DRUM on May 29, 1942. My first Patrol was a dud. I spent more time in transit and dodging enemy air cover than I spent patrolling off Honshu. I was hoping for better luck this time. I got it in spades!
I arrived and refueled at Midway on June 1, 1942. After provisioning, I headed NW in a slow lazy route back to Honshu. The next day I received FOX traffic that the Battle of Midway was in full effect. Not knowing how accurate the game's history was, I set out searching for where I thought the enemy carriers and invasion force would be.
My God, I've never seen that many aircraft on radar...
It may not have been THE carrier force, but it was A carrier force. They were NE of me heading SE. I'd have to hustle, but maybe, just maybe I could get in front of them and darkness would be on my side. I figured, "what the hell" and ran my engines to their extremes. Even if I burnt every drop of fuel in the bunkers I was only a few hundreds miles from Midway. I could row if it meant flatops on the scoreboard.
After what seems like days, I finally got out about 20 miles in front of the task force. I used their approximate course and the ruler to draw out where they'd be and a then I drew an interception course that'd put me 2,000 yards off of their line of advance. I ran at flank speed to that spot, dove deep, manned battlestations, went silent, and waited.
I was a hole in the water waiting on the first destroyer picket to cover the 10 or so miles to my position. She drove along fat, dumb, and happy. She passed not 300 yards from my position without a peep! I'm in! :arrgh!:
I ordered 3 knots and slowly started ascending to Periscope Depth. While I was waiting on that, I set all of my torps except for those in tubes 6 and 10 to high speed and set them for a depth of 25ft. I was going to hang onto those last two for snap shots at any DD's that dared come close enough. As soon as I passed 98ft I opened all the doors and gave some rudder orders based on passive sonor bearings.
At 70ft I popped the attack scope and waited on it to clear the surface. Jackpot! Three Shokakus and three Hiryus and a half-dozen CA's and CL's that now seem insignificant. Forget the reserves! Reset tubes 6 and 10!
The plan is simple: Two fish for each of the big flattops and if I'm lucky I can get turned around and two each for two of the baby flattops. Dive deep and run away as quietly as a can while reloading. Even if I can't sink them, maybe I can slow them down enough to stop airops and take them out of the fight, get away, report, and come back to finish any stragglers.
I start giving rudder orders and let loose with all six fish from the bow tubes and immediately start trying to turn away for a shot with the stern tubes. They still don't know I'm here, but they will soon!
All six fish find their marks. At 900 yards with perfect broadsides on the first two targets, how can you miss? There are secondary explosion after secondary explosion after secondary explosion. They know I'm here so I order flank ahead to finish the swing. Now there's a DD hammering down on me about 1500 yards away but I'm greedy at this point. I sent four fish at two of the baby flattops.
As soon as they clear the tubes I keep flank ahead and go deep to 300'. The DD is pinging wildly and before I can cross the thermal layer I get four more torpedo impacts! As soon as I cross the layer at 150ft, I reduce speed to 2 knots and pray that the sonar operators on the now swarming DD's are dumb. I set a course for the west to clear datum and switch to the external view to watch the DD's do their dance in the circle of death, but not before I watch all three big flattops and both baby flattops roll over and die! SCRATCH FIVE FLATTOPS!
I spend four hours deep watching what's left of the Task Force reform and turn back SE as I slowly slip away. With night now on us and the last DD finally turning to regroup with the Task Force, I surface to get off a contact report.
After berating myself for breaking my own rules and getting greedy, despite my luck, I figure I've bloodied Tojo's nose enough (116,000 tons worth!) for one day and give the Task Force a wide berth as I head back to Midway to resupply. After all, I've still got a mission to carry out.
On the way back to Midway I seriously considered calling it a patrol and heading back to Pearl. But, I figured what the hell. They're just going to send me right back out. It's not like they're going to transfer me and the DRUM to something nice and safe like fleet training or anything.
So after reprovisioning at Midway I make the long and lonly trek back out to Honshu. Outside of the omnipresent air cover and the endless strings of diving and surfacing to avoid them, the next two weeks are fairly uneventful. I managed to get a few lone coastal freighters under the cover of darkness with my deck gun. Nowhere near the excitement of that Task Force.
With the assigned mission objectives complete, I'm just killing time until my fuel dictates a return to Pearl. But, I sure hate the idea of returning with all 24 torpedoes so I do the customary runs on deep harbors along Honshu's east cost. I get lucky, pop a couple of DD's standing guard and even burn a few of my stern torpedoes when I manage to find two Large Tankers riding by the dock.
By all accounts, this is a history making War Patrol and I'll be at the top of the leader board by leaps and bounds, but it was just a case of being in the right place at the right time. I've now got just six torpedoes left in the bow tubes and two in the stern.
The fuel situation is okay, but I figure I'll give one last opportunity to make those torpedos count before I turn back towards Midway for fuel before heading home to Pearl. So, I head down towards Yokosuka and Tokyo. I figure I'll just poke my nose in and see what's down there.
The weather is definately not on my side down there. I head in at night but it's calm and flat with a giant moon in the sky. I pop a lone destroyer on the way in, but they know I'm there. Luckily, the AI is stupid and the destroyers can't get around the bend at Yokosuka. Three DD's kill themselves just driving up on the beach and their guns can reach me.
I send three of my five last bow torpedoes into a Mogami tied up to the pier at Yokosuka and what a time for duds! Two fail to explode despite hitting their target at good angles. I turn to leave and send my last two stern fish at the Mogami. One misses just ahead and strikes the pier (How'd I miss a stationary target!?!?) and the other hit the Mogami and sends up another big plume of water, but no secondaries. She lists over to starboard but refuses to sink.
With just one torpedo left for anything I might run into on the trip home and that Mogami's guns still active, I decide to stay submerged and slink out of the bay.
As leave the bay the weather finally cooperates and a storm front rolls in dropping daylight visibility to nothing. At least I won't have to worry about the Airdales on the way out.
A couple hours later Sonar reports a small Convoy along my line of advance. We'll intersect close enough where I can make it just by altering my course a little as the tracking party strengthens their plot.
After awhile I get close. Real close. They can't be more than a mile away, but due to the fog nobody can see ANYTHING.
The sonor plot looks like two warships and a merchant. One warship ahead, screening for any interlopers and one astern. I man battlestations and give all the guns the weapons free order just in case something big and mean pops out of the fog before I can dive. I make for the center of the formation hoping to get a visual on the merchant for my last torpedo. I've set it for high speed and depth of 20ft.
Just then, the prettiest dumb, fat, and happy gigantic European passenger liner pops out of the fog. My deck gun opens up on her and I realize I just told her escorts where I was. So, I ring up all ahead flank, turn, loose my one torpedo and dive for the bottom.
The torpedo strikes perfectly amidships, there's fire and secondaries, but she refuses to sink. Ah well... She's dead in the water and on fire, I'm alive, but with no more torps, and the DD's are hunting for me on the other side of her.
I ease away and slip off towards home. The rest of the trip was uneventful, but when I finally made it back to Pearl I had a nice shiny Valor medal for me and six Patrol Stars to give to my crew.

Today i ran into 2 destroyers off the coast of Honshu, they see me from way out, and turn full speed directly to me. Bad move. Dive to periscope depth, line up closest one on 0 and dumbfire 2 torps, he evades too late and i end up hitting the aft with one of them. "Shes going down sir!"
Okay so i dive to 550 but the other destroyer is pissed! Wont let me go and its been like an hour, keeps pinging me and she must have flown in some more depth charges because they kept coming.
Signal my radio man to play "We did it before and we'll do it again" on max volume, hoping it will be the last song the jap sonar man will hear while i hit flank and go back up to periscope depth, hoping i can line up for another salvo of dumbfires.
Raise perascope just in time to see a full view of the enemie's bow charging for me, i launch 2 torps knowing shes too close for them to go off, but whatever, I lower the scope just in time to get barely nicked by her belly, what a close call. How i evaded that next depth charge attack only god knows.
Dive down to 100 feet, still more charges going off all around. Im getting tired of it. Blow ballast and call battlestations, man the deck gun and fire 19 shells into her. Somehow i was blessed with being at the right angle to only take small(er) arms fire from her decks, while she just got pounded.
In the end we all lived up to the song my radioman played. We did it before and then we did it again!
End result, i was amazed to see, was 0 damage, not even my perescope was hurt, and when it was hit, the entire boat rocked!:hmmm:

USS ASPRO on patrol, March 1944. While approaching the northern end of the Straits Of Makassar, the radar op. picked up a 3-ship TF heading NNE. Closed to 6750 yards, and tracked them, moving in fast. Managed to get into a parallel course and matched their speed of 19.5 kts. Thought, what the heck. Not more than 4 fish though- id'ed the targets as two Takao Class CA's, with a DD in the rear. Fired four, and headed away from the target, expecting to miss. About 5 min. later, 3 of the fish struck home, followed by lots of nice secondary explosions. At just over 8000 yds when she was hit makes this my longest-range kill yet.

I accidently placed this in the general forum. Enjoy and comment if you liked it.
Sooo, not long after my post about where to find me some ships (Maps anyone?), I was traveling west from Midway towards a patrol area southeast of Palau. I was northeast of the Solomons when I received flash traffic to head to a location NE of an island called Ontong Java Island, 151 20 East 05 25 South.
I thought I had a slight snowball's chance in hell of intercepting them. I plotted a rough course the TF migth take from Truk and started patrolling. At first nothing but bad weather, high seas and frsutration. Suddenly, my radar guys found a huge task force. I spooted three carriers, two battleships, three light cruisers, three heavy cruisers, and a hornet's nest of DD's. I set up a parallel course to them and did an end round forward tube attack. On my first engagement I sunk the Shōkakuo. Lucky shot to the starboard bow, followed by a massive explosion. She kept going full speed as she went under, followed by more massive explosions. I set up the two now zig-zagging carriers. I put two torpedoes each in them. They were Hiyo type carriers. One of them sank right there. The other limped off with the group. I shadowed the Task Force for a day through horrible weather. During the shadowing, the last carrier eventually dropped out of the group due to damage. I put a single torp in her and down she went.
I continued to trail the Task Force which after closer inspection, included two Kongo type battleships. I trailed them with six torps left. I set up a very close aft torp attack and shot three torps in the first Kongo. I spaced the hits out, one to the forward magazine, one mid center, and one to the engine room. The engine room torp shot was a keel buster. It put a huge hole directly under the ship. She rolled over quickly and went to the bottom. I went flank speed and full starboard rudder to bring the sub around. I shot four at the other battleship with three hits and down she went. I sneaked off and I am currently heading home. Tonnage is around 143,000 and change. know, I know.. BE MORE AGGRESSIVE! :salute:
Here is the precise info:
Task Force attacked on Jan 31st.
Shōkakuo and Hiyo sunk @ 159 40 E 3 05 S
Other Hiyo sunk at 160 58E 4 02 S
Feb 1st
Two Kongos sunk at 162'34 E 3'3 S

Yea, it was funny. Actually a TF came through. I had played with the turbo speed settings and the way they sit in the water...All the other ships in the TF did fine, but this one just bounced around behind it. When I finally got a visual contact, seeing it from far away bouncing on the water was rather funny. When the TF sensed me, this carrier stopped dead and just sat there bouncing...I tried to hit it with torps, but sometimes it was 100 ft in the air.

So herein lies the story of the USS Tambor, with a fresh skipper and crew ready for action in the pacific. Left pearl, refueled at midway and was enroute to area 5 when I dropped out of TC and picked up a contact at a good distance away. We were well west of wake by this time. So, I paused the war, grabbed me a beverage, rubbed my hands together with an evil grin, unpaused and started tracking. Turned out to be a pair of merchants. I set up for the perfect shot and lay in wait...was just starting to get dark and I let 3 torps go at each. Now, I had just loaded up TMO 1.9 and started a new career..didn't realize my event camera was turned on..but that's cool I thought. Normally, I get to see a vid of my torp..and in the background the hull of it's target getting closer and closer. Well, the event camera was triggered, and sure enough..there's one of my torps, but instead of the hull of it's target..there was this hull that looked amazingly like the back end of my boat. Holy Skittles! With those words barely out of my mouth, the boat was rocked by a mighty explosion, as I lost everything in the stern except one prop shaft and the rudder. Taking on water pretty fast. I ordered us to surface, cranked up the throttle and was going to limp away for repairs when I noticed for the first time that a hit was scored on the lead ship. The rest were either duds or I missed, will never know for sure. I raised up the glasses to see how bad off the merchant was..and low and behold..there she waved...the stars and stripes!!!!!! Well...so I ordered a full stop, stood down the DC party, neglecting to pause the war this time, I went and got all the beverages I had left...and sank.

Wow, it's mid Apr '45 and I'm trolling for singles or TF action, primarily relying on my DUAL 5.25" deck guns for the singles and ignoring merchant convoys.
Radar contact confirmed a 6 ship merchant convoy with absolutely no DDs escorting them. Well, I just GOTTA go after THESE guys!
Got in position for a torpedo run and sent 2 at each of the biggest targets(Large Modern Composite Freighters). I had done several speed checks and good solutions but, just before I fired, the convoy slowed down. As luck would have it, they even changed course right as I fired. I used Mk16s and had major doubts I had been detected but they looked like they were running.
I was pretty pi$$ed and surfaced the boat amidst considerable gunfire coming in as we broached. I began to take it back down and stopped myself. Screw it, we're going after them!
4 of the 6 were armed and decided to fight. Bad choice. The two unarmed merchants began to run but, it was too late. The first 4 went down swinging and we chased down the last 2 sending them on a one way trip to the bottom.
The entire encounter took 20min.

What is SubsimMachFest? It is our very own short film festival! Welcome to the second Annual Subsim Machinima Short Video Festival. Contenders for the awards will be posted on http://au.youtube.com/user/SubsimMachFest I'm looking for the best 7 minute machinima videos containing a submarine that you can create.
Being Subsim we need a theme for our vid fest and of course it is submarines. It doesn't matter if you don't use a sub sim to make your vid but in the 7 minutes you have to include at least one submarine whether it is simulated or otherwise.
So all you budding machinima makers, crank up your skills for a chance to win one of the following awards:
Best of the Fest
Best Comedy
Best Drama
Best Director
Best Cinematography
Peoples choice
The rules for entries are simple:
All entries must be received by 5pm AEST (Sydney, Australia) on 30 April 2010. Any entries received after this time will not be considered.
All entries must be less than 7 mins long and must contain a submarine, simulated or otherwise. Other than that I don’t care what games or tools you used to create your entry.
All entries should have ending credits which include the following text or voiceover: "Dive into the Web's #1 Submarine and Naval Resource: SUBSIM.com"
Entries can be mailed on digital media or made available to me to download. To notify me of your entry by PM or e-mail. PM me to obtain my e-mail address.
Individuals may submit as many entries as they wish
All entries being considered for an award will be posted by me on the SubsimMachFest (http://au.youtube.com/user/SubsimMachFest) youtube channel.
All entries must be your own work although using material from other sources is allowed as long as it is properly credited. I have no interest in holding the rights to the videos other than the right to post them on the SubsimMachFest site.
All content must comply with the posting rules for Subsim, so no porn, racial or political vilification or abuse of any sort will be considered valid.
This is my film festival and I am the judge so if you have any complaints about my judging talk to the hand cos it’s mine and the entries have to please me. :O:
As the judge I cannot enter the competition in any way shape or form.
Post here (http://subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=165409)if you are interested in taking part or know someone who would be. Any questions post ‘em here also.

Hello everyone, new skipper reporting, fresh off training boat ;)
Had some trials with SH2 and SH3 before but it never got fun. Decided to look at SH5 but I'll leave that silent. So, SH4 it is. After few patrols on Easy in vanilla 1.4 I decided to spice things up and got myself TMO + RSRDC. Revised TDC and memorized Dick O'Kane's method. Plus some torpedo tutorial in sub school. Went hardcore at High this time, all checked but map markers (I like to think my XO takes care of that, but now I see it's a bit too accurate to be true) and external camera for views.
I have no regular report as I didn't thought about it in time, but I have few highlights I'd like to share :)
So, started out in Asiatic Fleet out of Manila, Sugar boat it is. Like to start from the bottom. I was sent to this gulf north of Manila, spoted a TF there. Closed in on 90 degrees intercept course, went deep and silent. I watched the sonar visualisation of escort DD pass some 4000 yards behind me, first of two columns just 1000 yards ahead, the next another 1000 yards ahead. Periscope depth, let's have a peek.
Identified a small flattop, two heavy battlecruisers, about 4 light, 2 merchs and 4 DDs of escort in standard box formation.
Checked the book, so the heavy battlecruisers are the highest tonnage. Decide to get the one running second in closer column, I set up a DOK solution, running at 12 knots the T... (forgot the exact name) BC got hit by 3 Mark's 10 below second gun, under the boiler and in the aft. First hit - BOOM! ammunition storage, BOOM! engine compartement. At this point it was going down in pretty flames, a dozen lifeboats overboard and the third torp hit. KABOOOM! all those lifeboats got ignited in the explosion. Pretty!
I watched as it limps to the right (can never remember, starboard, or port...) and drops to the bottom. Escort decided it's quite normal to a ship to blow up like this and never bothered with me droping to the test depth.
And at this point I got hit by Japan Intelligence and my Win7 showed me a bluescreen.
Too bad, had a save just before calculating the solution, better safe then sorry. All went down exacly the same (3 torps, 3 exlplosions). But this time, instead of watching the sights I looked upon the other battlecruiser - Maya it was I belive. Running second from last in further column it was almost entering my 10 degrees target bearing. Remembering that with DOK range doesn't matter and everyone seemed oblivious of me sitting in the same spot all along (just changing depth without propulsion) I let the last fish go right in the same spot under the second turret. KABOOM! It goes down and secondary explosions catch all the lifeboats again. I'll put screenshots when I dig them up :).
Went deep, turned away from their heading and slipped away with two biggest ships I ever sunk in my first 'realistic' patrol with manual targeting. Encouraging! :)
Also - sugar boats - favorite ever. When you eventually get lucky it's just beautiful to see how this little, slow and underpowered cigars can kill almost anything.
If you want I'll share more, just tell me what you think :)

My first post here, wanted to share my first patrol on my return to SHIV after a long while. I'm running 100% Realism with TMO 1.9 & RSRDC (and other aesthetic tart-ups).
USS Seal (SS-183)
Salmon class
17 June, 1942
1st Patrol
We leave home port in Fremantle with orders to perform choke point operations along the archipelago on the northern rim of the Celebes Sea. I've had previous experience here when I first started SHIV and couldn't hit the broadside of a Shokaku with an acoustic-guided nuke - suffice to say that career didn't go well, between the nefarious DDs and Japanese air cover, while i'd never been sunk I did hate the place. And getting there!
My first white-knuckle moment was passing through the accessway of the Lombok Strait, still neutral territory at this time but I intensely dislike traversing straits, I'd timed it wrong and it was a clear seas dawn passage too, hell for the lone submariner. Luckily though, no contacts until i'm just clear of the strait, and I pickup a long-range radar contact heading right up my propellors, it's now 0600 June 26. I start getting his course and a speed reading as I turn to nearly 90° AoB and flank up to within a few thousand yards from his track. Using Vector Analysis (my favoured tecnique) I set him up for two slow-running Mk14s. Periscope Depth! He passes right in front, I recognise him as a medium freighter of some kind, and as his first mast and then stack cross the wire - Fire One! Fire Two! About a minute later "Shes going down, sir!". Yes, my first kill in USS Seal. Turns out to be a Taihosan Maru, 1800t freighter. She was only going 8 knots so hardly a big challenge but i've broken the first-kill mark!
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/104/20100320ussseal1stpatro.jpg
As I cruise past the wreck of the Taihosan, we're heading right up the Makassan Strait to reach our patrol area. Some captains may have chosen the route which goes east and then north-west back into the Celebes Sea, where its pretty much free from air cover, however i'm predicting a long patrol so want to conserve fuel where I can. Unfortunately, right on the darkening evening of June 28 i'm proven wrong - two big Jap bombers within an hour! The first missed horrendously on his first dive, it must be the tiring night sky I thought, and opened up with the 2x20mm. Managed to get a few hits before he got way too close for comfort on his 3rd attack run - CRASH DIVE! I do like the Salmons reasonable dive time, got decks awash in about 30-40 seconds and totally under in about the same again. The bomber gives it up and heads home shortly afterwards. As I resurface and try to make progress, one of his colleagues shows up - not this time mate, "New depth one-five-zero, aye sir!"
I finish traversing the strait at about 12:00 June 29 and behold, radar contact! As I ready to dive again my operator tells me it's a single surface contact, moving slow - brilliant! Up on deck to see if I can spot him out there... ah. Heavy, heavy fog, pouring with rain.. visibility is very low indeed. Still, I persevere and set-up three stern fast-runners (pays to be safe with the Mk14s early on!) right on his 9.5kt track. Periscope Depth! I watch his approach on sonar, he's going slow and straight, awesome... coming up on the aiming bearing now, Up Scope! But he's nowhere to be seen. I spend too long trying to look through the fog and when I get back to my map sonar indicates he's passing the firing line. Fire One, Two, Three! All miss by what I guesstimate to be 15 yards or so, damned luck. "Yes sir, surface the boat. Yes sir, Ahead Flank." I'll get him one way or another. I get the deck-gun manned and fire off on his sonar bearing at the rough range - direct hit! The shell lights up the foggy sky with a silhouette of a tanker - oh yes. His AA guns attempt to pepper me in return but 15 good HE rounds from the 4" later and he's on his way to the bottom, a true pain to sink but at least the torpedoes weren't wasted in vein - Buzyun Maru, 5000t.
http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/104/20100320ussseal1stpatro.jpg
Now we're free of those darn straits, beautifully open Celebes Sea on all sides and two kills under my belt - and i'm not even on station yet! I move around the air cover rings where possible towards the northern end, and as I reach mid-way there I get a radar contact, medium mover, long range. Coming right for me - superb. Periscope Depth and set-up what I hope to be my first Dick O'Kane 90° attack. 2000yd from his track, measure him at an even 12 knots, and set up three slow-running fish. As he gets within visual range I get all excited - another tanker, this one's hefty. I have a flick through the recog book and she's a deep-running 10000t'er. Beautiful, all three fish set to 15ft depth. As she passes my aiming bearing I fire off my fish at her fore and aft masts and the engine room at the rear... three direct hits, a little astern of where i'd aimed but for my first Dick O'Kane i'm well chuffed - she's soon sinking to the bottom.
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/104/20100320ussseal1stpatro.jpg
Maybe I can finally get on station now? I set my course for some back-and-fro chokepoint ops, and settle down for a long 72 hours there. I go back and forth along the chokepoint at ahead slow, hoping for some outta luck merchant to sail through but, alas, not today. My 72 hours on station are up and I radio in to SubPac. Ah, great... now go to the northwestern end of the archipelago and do more chokepointing for 92 hours. I start to groan but as I inspect the map to plot my course I notice this has a gaping, deep strait coming from the Sulu Sea in it. I use a little tact and maneuvre into a good position on the side of the strait facing inwards and just wait for some prey... Ah look, radar says here comes some now! Another dawn merchant, July 6. She's coming directly south at 10kt, I set-up her track and realise I can't intercept in time without her getting a visual - another clear day and calm seas! Right, ahead flank. I pull 17 knots which seems all the Seal can give until i'm 5nm in front of this guy, flip around onto a textbook John P Cromwell 45° line of attack and submerge. The sea's a little rougher now so in the swells my radar just goes above the surface - let's hope for unobservant Japanese watchmen! The merchant is a medium, maybe a composite... my deck crew tell me it's an "Akita Maru", a 4000t deep-running cargo hauler. Two fish set for fast-running down the 10° lead angle at a healthy 20ft depth. Los! Wait, that's not right is it? Fire! There we go. They track pretty well but due to the choppy waves I cant tell if they hit where I marked, but she's taken both. I wait for the death message... and wait... and wait... several long minutes pass, she's ground to a halt but no signs of anything else. Hm, right, I go a little deeper and set my track to go past her bow and set-up a zero gyro shot from my stern tubes but right as im passing her I get the "She's going down, sir!" Finally. Periscope Depth, Ahead Full! As my scope breaks the waves no more than 20 seconds after the message she's disappeared. Just a pool of fuel on fire. Damn, missed the sinking - oh well, a kill's a kill, and this one takes me over the 15000t mark. For my first patrol i'm delighted.
http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/104/20100320ussseal1stpatro.jpg
I set my course back onto the other side of the strait this time and sit-up in fairly rough seas for another long while. I get another radar contact coming in the same path south, I'm well ahead of him this time and head right up a 45° intercept path from my sitting position. I decide on the John Cromwell attack, but figure as I know it worked last time, let's mix it up a bit. I've only got 4 bow fish remaining so I plot a course to swing the boat around and come to a stern 45° angle on him. Two fast-runners at 7.5ft, the target's visual and identified as a Ryuun Maru, a low draft 6500t merchant. They're fish in a barrel on this patrol! Periscope Depth! The sea is playing havoc with my visuals and I play with my depth to find a compromise between visibility and not exposing my conning tower, and despite moving at just half a knot my sonarman loses the contact on bearing 160 (and as its a stern Cromwell i'll be firing at 170°). I all-stop and time compress to see if he picks him up again, no joy. Up scope! Bloody waves mean I can't see a thing, I've got the guys smokestack right on 170 though - I wait the longest 5 seconds ever to see if the waves will show me his hull but they dont - throwing caution to the wind "Firing tube 5 sir!" "Firing tube 6 sir!". Down scope! If he sees me now and slows down or speeds up it could all go down the swanny. I watch the fish approach on his last known visual range on the attack map and they're running hot, straight and true.. how I havent had any duds with the Mk14s yet I don't know. Torpedo Impact, Torpedo Impact! Up with the scope and this time I get to watch my prey fall below, impressively too, as she loses both masts in the explosion and splits in half.
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/104/20100320ussseal1stpatro.jpg
Back to my sitting position on the west side of the strait. Coming up to midnight on July 7. Radar contact! It's rough though, very intermittent. Seems to be coming dead north, slow. I move in for a stern 90° attack (still have 4 stern fish, would rather use them when I can than the bow ones). The night is however... black. And I mean black. As in I-can't-see-my-deck-gun-from-the-tower black. As this ship moves in I get a couple of good radar readings, she's 6.5 - 7 knots and ive got a good 90° track on her. As she gets within 1000y I still can't see her, 500y... still nothing. I can't shoot torpedoes like this! Surface! Battle stations! I use the sonar to track the ship and fire off the 4" on her bearing, I miss the first few shots but it shows her up - just. 40 rounds later and she's taken enough damage to light up, and whaddyaknow - another 10k ton Nippon Maru tanker. Beautiful sight from the deck as the explosions go off, very worthy of a screenshot. Still have 50 gun rounds left too in reserve. Right, back to my spot, still almost 3/4's fuel left at this stage too. I have to submerge to make any progress through this sea though, for the middle of summer it's torrential. Heavy wind, heavy fog and the sea is rocking the boat so much I hit 20ft of depth and then lift almost bow-out of the water. Make your depth one-one-zero. I'm glad this strait has got 800ft of water after all!
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/104/20100320ussseal1stpatro.jpg
I complete the rest of the 90 hour choking without event, and am then ordered by the rear echelon to proceed to the mouth of the Makassar Strait for 72 hours. The weather has calmed down, light fog but very calm seas now. An uneventful three days at Makassar, mostly at 1/3rd electric power at radar depth. We're then instructed to move onto the eastern edge of the Java Sea, and patrol there. With still well over half a tank of fuel left this is looking good as I slowly move back towards the Oceania.
http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/104/20100320ussseal1stpatro.jpg
Right as we re-enter the Makassar Strait however I pick-up a radar contact. I set a Vector Analysis approach for two shots from the stern tubes however once the ship passes by, a good 8000 yards away, I see the fish would miss by a mile - too much margin of error that far. My deck crew identifty the ship as another Buzyun Maru, that 5k ton tanker I had to deck-gun down at the start of the patrol. I decide to take this seemingly unarmed freighter with my remaining deck gun rounds and surface, intercepting it and plinking it from 4000yds. I eventually run out of ammo and the ship still isn't down after tailing it for many minutes. I flank upto his rear and rake the decks with AA before a quick-running zero gyro bow torpedo from 200yds. Nice hole in his centre and he bites the dust.
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/3836/20100320ussseal1stpatrod.jpg
I reach my patrol zone and complete the task uneventfully, and decide at the end of that mission to head for home in Fremantle. I plot my course and set off for the small inlet a ways east of the Lombok Strait to get through to home. Without interruption we make port at Fremantle, and are flying many broomsticks as we sunk 8 merchant ships for a total patrol tonnage of 42,334. I'm chuffed to bits! And apparently, so is the president (although it says 2 war patrols, its definately just been on one - odd!)

Nikeleye, nice writeup & nice pix!
I was patrolling off the So. tip of Japan and got radar contact on a TF with 6 DDs escorting!
Quick check of the free camera confirmed a Hiryu CV front row center. I'll take my chances with the escorts!
Mind you, the seas were rough, visibility extremely low due to rain. Took a run ahead to get in position for the ambush and.....what's this! Three of the DDs make a beeline for me from quite a ways out! I had heard the Japs aquired radar by late war and I'm only running 1.5 w/RSRD...no MegaMods(yet!).
They HAD to have picked me up on radar(don't recall the exact distance). So, into evasion mode I go while still trying to remain in position for a shot when the TF comes by. I had help from the weather and plenty of prior experience in this situation! It took quite awhile doing the hoochie-koo with the DDs, waiting for the big iron.
So, keeping an eye on the sound contact lines I waited....and up we came from 300' to about 50' to get the scope over the waves just in time to get a solution and fire 3 fish....effectively eliminating a medium tanker between us and the flattop! DAMN!
It was a real b*tch trying to see anything and an occasional silhouette was the only thing I was getting while trying to confirm the target. The Hiryu was making his way well past 0' relative while I tried setting up a solution. Mostly guesswork went into it and I fired 2 fish and 1 trailing with a nice lead spread for insurance.
The Mk16s are fast and got long legs but after a considerable wait, it seemed like they had missed. A moment later, torpedo impact! And another!! Surely they must've gone through the formation and taken out something else?!? Nope, a minute later, the event camera popped open and I got to see the CV take a roll and down she went!
Kinda lucky, or educated guesses pulling off a blind shot? I'll take it either way!

While enroute to the patrol grid BdU assigned me in late 1940, I ran across this taskforce off the northwestern coast of Ireland.
Visibility was quite low with heavy seas. As it was, I had a DD almost dead ahead at 4500 meters that I could just barely make out through the fog.
I stayed behind the aforementioned DD but inched my way deeper into the heart of the convoy to see what exactly it was and to my surprise I found this.
Repulse class BC. Too far ahead to get off a decent shot, and moving too fast (18 knots) to close with. The best I was managing to pull with the weather was 16 knots at flank speed. (Note - I edited the gamma a bit so it's more visible.)
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w215/ShadowWolf_Kell/SH4-01.jpg
Trailing behind it, was an Illustrious carrier that offered a far better firing solution.
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w215/ShadowWolf_Kell/SH4-02.jpg
Realizing I had to make a prompt choice, I decided to start putting together a course and speed for the convoy. The DD ahead of me was beginning to get harder and harder to see and my course plots revealed what I'd already suspected. The convoy was getting away. Up till now, I'd been mostly relying on magnetic detonators for my torpedos to offset the massive about of duds with impact. This time, I had no choice. With the carrier being almost 6000 meters away, I couldn't risk using magnetic detonators. I plugged in a quick solution and fired a spread of 4 torpedos set at a 1 degree interval. 2 hit, 1 was a dud and the third either missed or went deep.
Unfortunately it wasn't enough to stop the convoy, but it did manage to slow the carrier and thus the convoy down to a far more manageable 11 knots.
I lost some time after firing by diving to 120 meters and going silent. I had no idea where the DDs would start searching and I didn't want to risk being detected. My caution paid off, though I lost quite a bit of time and had to work to get back up to the convoy and eventually ahead.
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w215/ShadowWolf_Kell/SH4-03.jpg
Moving into a more favorable position to hit the Repulse, I fired another spread of 4 torpedos. All 4 hit, but 2 where duds.
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w215/ShadowWolf_Kell/SH4-04.jpg
She started to slow down and heave to the starboard quite badly, so I backtracked to the carrier and finished her off.
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w215/ShadowWolf_Kell/SH4-05.jpg
At this point I had to go evasive. The 4 DDs escorting them were buzzing around like bees and as yet they still didn't have a fix on my location. I decided to keep it that way. After manuevering around for a bit and losing contact with the Repulse on the hydrophones, I decided to go to periscope depth for a peek. That proved ultimately futile with the sea state so I opted to go decks awash.
Now on her port side, I fired off a coup de grace shot to finish her off. Dud. I had to bring my aft tube to bear to fire off two more. One was a dud and the third was the charm.

The latter is simply dials, map plotter tool and command.cfg from RFB imported into TMO. I play OM as well, so the transition to the RFB command layout was fairly seemless since they're consistant with each other for most things. TMO's command layout was driving me crazy.

If you want to try something that will really tax your brain, use a submerged radar/sonar attack. It's a ton of fun, and plenty rewarding if you do it right.

Wow that was GREAT! I liked the switching of music, and the back-and-forth between tension and relaxation, almost to the point of being on a pleasure cruise. The only criticism I have of it, is that when the sub is getting pinged, you kept the camera staged in the control room where everyone looked sort of relaxed. I feel that it detracted from the tension you had been building. If you had maybe switched camera views to a different "worried" looking crew member with each ping of the sonar, you would have maintained that tension. Other than that, however, I thought it was fantastic, and I've subscribed to you, and await your next video with joy. :salute:

I have only been playing SH4 (TMOWTW) for about a month but thought it was quite odd to come across a "Small Stationary Convoy" made up of two Kawanishi H6K's that just happened to land close to each other out in the middle of the ocean.
I approached cautiously and then sunk them with my deck gun.
Is this pretty normal in SH4?

Hi all,
F/k Commandosolo Capt of U-679 11th patrol intercept story.
After my 10th patrol, we had our boat repaired from raiding Columbo.
I was informed at Penang, that I was to intercept a Taskforce headed to Adelaide, starting from Columbo, within a timeline of 18 days.
I did some recent modifications to the crew, including adding a Theoretician,
I was literally shocked by that guy and the renown bonus he gave me.
I told the boys to have fun later that night, and report to the boat at 4 sharp.
We had good times, and I had sent a bouquet of flowers to mein Frau before I left port.
We set sail to a course perpendicular to the forces movement,
and for 3 days I used the help of available reconnaisance planes, and ordered backup cruisers to arrive and meet us at the intercept point.
Air boys told us they had lots of difficulties to keep up with the taskforce, being pursued by escort enemy planes, they made it to their carriers, and informed us over radio that the taskforce was about 180 km ahead of us.
The cruisers were pretty darn stupid so I used them to form a spearhead to attack the incoming escorts while I deal with the objective target.
a few hours later, WO reported smoke on the horizon and I signalled the cruisers to advance and attack.
I turned to SO and ordered him to follow ANY merchant screws .
About 20 minutes later, we began hearing shells and explosions.
My SO was deafened momentarily by the splashes from shells and I had to command the whole sub from the Sonar room. My men formed nodes to pass on my orders.
I used my experience to follow the merchants, which turned out to be the lone merchant of this force.
I was puzzled by that, since in many of my older patrols, we had at least 3 merchants per patrol if it's a taskforce.
I ordered my TO to prepare bow tubes 1,3 and 5 since they had G7es Falke loaded in, I figured that such target is a high value target, and I followed him as he traversed from bearing 20 to bearing 340, at which time, I ordered ahead flank, rudder port 20 degrees.
I turned to his stern and I had a good homing solution. but he was 3700 meters ahead, I was at 20 meters depth and I ordered the EO to start the turbine, and he did.
I knew that since my position has been compromised, what the hell, take the shots.
So, I ordered the helm to dive to 49 meters and open all tubes.
As soon as we hit 48 meters, I stopped the engines and fired all 6 tubes ahead. 2 minutes later, I heard a good explosion so near that the boat vibrated violently. I heard bulkheads collapsing, splashes in the water by the people inside that liner.
Without taking any more risks I orderd a crash dive and set speed to 1 knot.
I had dived to 180 meters, and stayed at 1 knot for 8 hours.
Slowly we resurfaced and before I broke water, I scanned around with attack scope. Nothing.
I was clear.
I surfaced and immediatley radioed BdU and they informed me that one of my backup was sunk, the other one was badly damaged, but the captain reported sighting of a merchant vessel exploding at the time. So, I was confident that I scored that objective.
I had orders to pickup survivors from our ships, and to escort the other boat to Penang.
In the end of our patrol, We were welcomed warmly at port.
I had my SO decorated Iron Cross 1st class.
I was promoted to Frigattenkapitan.
We were happy to have made it home safe.
Stay tuned for further patrols...

Hey all
Just wanted to pass along my story of my patrol last night. I just got a new boat..the Drum..love gato's. My first mission out of Miday puts me all the way in the Java sea north west of Surabaya.
Suffice to say I made it to patrol zone with a little over half the tanks left. I had sank one Maru on the way there and so I sat for 4 days waiting. Nothing appears so when objective is complete I make a run for fremantle to top off.
I decide to transition the Selat Sunda..little channel to the west of Jakarta. Suffice to say its all jap ports through there and i was soon pikced up by a destroyer. I was in shallow water but had depth to my south..I knew he had me so I just hit flank...and headed that way.
His first run I managed to zigzag out of the way of his ash cans..in about 140 ft of water...2nd and 3rd runs where the same and I was feeling pretty lucky with my evasive maneuvers...then he hit...4th pass hit me hard damaging major drive systems, batteries, dive planes, etc. etc.
I was boned..and didnt wanna sink without a fight...I emergancy blew coming up right behind him...I opened up with the deck gun...and boy his gun crews sucked..only raked with AA guns..sank the DD.
OK I was alive and I set to work on damage...I dived to periscope and fixed all I could underwater. then surfaced to finish what I could but at least I could head to open waters..so i thought...a friggin shore battery hits me hard and blows the whole ass end of the boat so Iam dragging the boats butt in the mud as my nose sticks out of the water....I decide to surface and flank away from the battery...some zigs and flank I was clear..I was good..its gettting dark..I was alive..and out of range of the battery..yea so I thought:damn:
So then here comes a zero...I knew if I dived my nose would be sticking out of the water so I locked and loaded the AA...He dove in as my man banged away...no hits from him..no hits by the aa gunner..I was at flank hoping the repair team could patch the hole...then what ya think..another plane shows up..just as the first spins around for his second pass....he dives in..my AA blazin..and bam....direct hit....sends the Drum to the bottom....
Here I thought my escape was good but boy them Japs sure wanted me dead that day..I took at least one DD with me to the bottom though...:arrgh!:

I'm stuck in Brisbane, how did I get here. At first I was given command of a pigboat to deliver supplies to Tulagi. However, caught during the invasion my ship and crew did it's part and sunk two CA's during the battle of Savo Island.
We returned to base expecting the highest honors and rewards. What did we get, a 3 day leave and told to head back to patrol. I had expected one of the new Fleetboats, but given a
older Salmon. I deserved better. So, this is todays Navy.
Maybe it was my past. Twice I had been called to the mat for so called abuses, once sent to the shrink. The Doc said I endured severe tribulations over a relationship with a domineering mother. Still they held over me a series of misadventures that earned me the highest number of demerits in the history of the academy, but my father has connections.
My love life in question, I was about to marry a beautiful nightclub singer. With my looks and charm Rita adored me. We met long ago when she was trying to get a role in one of my fathers movies...Oh, my father, the big shot director. I know he didn't love me. He left my mother young for a even younger woman.
As I left for patrol, I looked at Rita on the bed..
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/Armistead1424/3prx1nyl5pf81xy3.jpg
I'll miss her, but I promised her my love and safe return. She told me to do my duty at all cost, die for my country if need be. The phone rang.."Father", you're here, I thought you were in New York.." Father said he had come to tell me goodbye and goodluck.
We left for Patrol with a load of toilet paper for the marines. Father and Rita saw me off. We dropped our supplies and was told the japs were coming back in force. We refitted and was sent North.
We arrived on station and searched for a week, when we got faint heavy screws north.

My men had done it again, we had found the Jap TF headed for the Solomons. We knew our carriers were coming from the Santa Cruz area. We got off a report and planned our attack.

We chanced a long range shot at a Kongo BB.

We came up later and tailed. We chased all day falling behind. We lost the TF on radar several times. Enemy escorts often came back and chased us away,..we were losing time.

We left go all four at 1000 yards.. He turns and one misses, but the others will hit..Sonar reports early explosions..we waited..not one hit, all PREMATURES...argh...all this for nothing.
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/Armistead1424/SH4Img2010-04-03_175908_392.jpg
I set up on the other carrier aft, a longer shot at 3500 yard, but maybe a few hits..ALL were duds and prematures..
"Load the damn tubes." I screamed.
No escorts near. I turned hard, one more shot at the fleeing carrier. The men loaded it fast.
Bearing, Range, Fire...10 seconds later an explosion in my face..another torp failure...
"What's wrong with the torps!" I yelled.
I want to surface and blast them with my DG..
"Battle Surface" I yelled, as I loaded my 45.
Next thing I know my XO relieves me of command.
I call him the yellow coward he is. What, here comes the Doc.." What's the syringe for Doc..noooo" I feel a needle go into my butt.
I fade out to the sound of depth charges muttering.." The torps, those damn torps.."
Days later I find myself being escorted off my sub...I know I'm right. "I'll get you all" I screamed as the guards took me away to a mental hospital.
"Those da da damn torps"
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/Armistead1424/sick.jpg
I hear the charges. I explain to the court what happened..."It was the damn fish" I screamed.
Oh, they had all their papers and reports, assuring me the torps worked perfect. They said I had ruined the perfect attack..My men turned against me.
I explained my report, about the torp failures.

Op Monson - My New Favorite
Left Wilhelmshaven on 7 Jan 1940 in U-41, new skipper of a new Type IX boat. Ordered to coast of Spain/Portugal. A number of contacts on the way to first patrol area, but being a new skipper I am very careful in my application of rules of engagement. Have a number of neutral ships dead to rights, but let them pass as they are neither clearly inbound to elligernet ports or otherwise suspected of carrying contraband.
After unsuccessful hunting off Spain, ordered to Western Approaches. Again, very careful about ROEs. Finally catch a convoy in Western Approaches, but press too hard to close in very clear, calm conditions and catch the eye of destroyers escorting convoy. Try to reestablish contact after sunset, but unsuccessful.
Finally bag a 6800 ton English tanker sailing alone, but no other action to speak of as weather really hampers spotting and radio contacts sadly lacking. Run diesel reserve down to 25% and set NE'ly course for home from my final seach area in Grid AM 54. Fear my first cruise may be my last.
Finally get an inteerceptable radio contact, so I take a ten hour detour to attempt an intercept despite poor weather. Again can't find her, so readjust course to get back on original homebound route.
THEN, IT HAPPENED.
At high noon, about 150 km NW of Stornoway on course 225, in 15m seas and light fog, lookouts spot a ship bearing 224. Swing the binos around to take a look. My God, shes' just a huge sillouette. Then trailing, another that the boys haven't called out yet, no more than a few thousand meters away. They look to be headed straight east toward Scapa Flow.
Battle stations! Order the rudder over hard left, dive to 'scope depth and hope to get in position for a snap shot. Then I get the ID: A QE-class BB is in the lead, and following is the HMS Hood. Chance of a lifetime.
Get a range and a quick eyeball estimate of AoB. No time to get a good speed estimate. I guess 15 kts. They'll be passing my bow at right around 1000m. The lead BB is past before I'm really ready to shoot, but that's OK, I want the Hood. I can tell I'm a little off with my AOB estimate when I shoot, and I just hope that the impact detonators on my Type IIs will work, even though I'm not going to have an optimum torp track angle to the target. Let loose with all four bown tubes, popping them off individually in hopes of giving myself a decent spread on teh target. Then get down and turn to follow, hoping I'll have a wounded duck to clean up.
First torp: DUD. I'm angry, but then I realive that my shoot-from the hip solution was good. Since I was firing back of target to front with my spread, I think I should get some more hits.
Second torp: DUD. Crap.
TORPDO IMPACT!!! I jump out of my chair.
I hear the fourth one miss on my way back to surface. Hood still steaming away, but by time I get back up, I see she is slowed (which I figured on the fourth miss), and in fact listing heavily to starboard. She's nearly dead in the water. THE QE-class is angry, turning in a wide, fast circle. "Dumb move. Maybe I can get a stern shot at her," I think. First things first, though. Set course directly for Hood. and scream at the boys to reload the bow tubes.
Tube 1 is ready about 30 seconds and she's empty again.
Tick, tick, tick. Being overly cautious, I don't get to see the massive explosion that follows, but I hear it. My excitable sonarman claim the target is destroyed, but I have to verify. Popping up quickly, I do see a might scondary explosion, and then the pride of the Royal Navy is no more. I pop off both stern tubes in a hopeful shot at teh other battleship, but hit nothing. I don't care, I get as deep as I can in teh relatively shallow waters and resume my course for home. I'll surface after dark.

Don't spot a single ship on the trip home. Don't care. Thankfully I don't spot any planes either. Pull up to the dock in Wilhelmshaven on 16 Feb 1940. Awarded Iron Cross, First Class. Get a Theoretician and two Master Diving Officers in my promotions.
Request to rename U-41 'Bismark' denied. Orderd back to coast of Spain, depart on 17 March 1940. Here we go again.

August 1 1942 Captain M. Vinther took command of the newly build USS Guardfish and took it on a shakedown cruise from PERL to MIDWAY. The journey was uneventful but a learning experience for the lesser experienced in the crew.

USS GUARDFISH under way
August 5 - Ready to set sails from MIDWAY. We got the new SJ radar module installed and can not wait to see what that will bring us. The TDC also got a Nisgeis update and will need to thorough look over on this cruise.
We are ordered to patrol the EAST CHINA SEA with departure later today.
The crew was happy to start the engines and pull out of MIDWAY - its a frigging dump with insects and nothing ells.

We sat course directly for SOFU GAN. No ships sighted and only a few aircraft's that touched our SD radars limit. All times we dived in good time and order and continued submerged for a couple of hours before resurfacing.

Approaching Sofu Gan
1625 hours: Sofu Gan in sight. We closed up to take the radar calibrations for the stadimeter and to get some "postcard" photographs of the rock and to let the crew take a swim. After an hour with bathing around the rock the crew had had its fun. We needed to get some parts of the boat cleaned up and get ready for dinner.
http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab234/Mav87th/USS%20Guardfish/th_CopyofSofuGan.jpg (http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab234/Mav87th/USS%20Guardfish/CopyofSofuGan.jpg)
1800 hours: SJ set showed a contact tracking south and after an hours tracking it was decided to be on heading 153°T at 10 kts and being either a Taihosan Maru or a Kinposan Maru. Its track shows that its properly running on the Tokyo-Truk sea-lane. Great if we can sink this likely reinforcement cargo ship for the forces in Guadalcanal where our marines are now fighting.
1900 hours: Dove to periscope depth. Range is now 6nm on bearing 070°. We are setting up for a 90° AOB shot like Dick O'Kane showed me in the bar at Midway.
1925 hours: ID established. We all agree that this is a 3300 ton Kinposan Maru. We will shoot two torpedoes on her.
1946 hours: Two torpedoes were shot with an offset of 1° left and right from centreline. Range was around 2000 yards. One torpedo ran in front of the target and the other behind it. BLAST! And to top the wasted torpedoes the Maru has now started a wild zigzag.
2130 hours: Apparently the former zigzag was in fact only a course change to 132°T and a speed change to 11,5 kts. We are now in pursuit and lining up for another attack
2211 hours: Hurrah out of 3 torpedoes shot all three impacted with big explosions as a result. The Maru sunk with all hands on Lat. 29°27'E Long. 142°08'N

Perhaps this is not the best place to post this, or maybe the very best place..
Back in the early 1980's, USS Silversides was docked at Navy Pier in Chicago. At that time, since museum revenues were very low, they allowed Boy and Cub Scout groups to "rent" the sub for overnight 'camp outs'. My Cub Scout Pack was able to get one of the openings, and what has always been one of the most treasured memories of my (long ago) youth unfolded. The museum staff that ran us through those wonderful 48 hours were all veteran USN SS class submariners, including 4 men that were WW2 combat patrol vets.
I was assigned a top rack in "Hogan's Alley" portsided amidships, and we got lectures and demonstrations of the various deck weapons, replicas of boarding party weapons, and how the boats operated during the war. The storytelling was incredible. The instructions for flushing a toilet (port-a-johns on pier, plumbing was not to be used as WW2 boats used methods the EPA would have a cow over!) was bizarre, facinating, and too cool for a kid of 8 or 9. :yeah: That was just the beginning, all evening long, we got "hands on" instructions, and tales from these guys. Why they called them Pigboats, why NOONE volunteered to clean bilges EVER, how torpedo attacks/gun attacks/watchstanding took place. Later, one of the guys who had been an officer during WW2, went, step by step, how the attack party conducted tracking and eventual attacks on enemy shipping. (One thing that never left my mind, I always wanted just once to really see the "Is Was Computer" being used, or be the guy responsible for it, though why escapes me now!)
After dinner, and that wonderful lecture, a watchlist was made up, and I drew the Midwatch (dropped to a 2 hr walkabout with one of the museum staff and one of the fathers). The old guy that took us about the boat was a vet from WW2, who served aboard (I think, this was 30 years ago (Or more! ). I would give much to remember his name. I know he was a torpedoman...) the USS Kingfish. As we walked the decks, he allowed the two younger people with him to pick his brain on his war experiences, and what it was really like to sail one of these ships of war toward an uncertain future and into the heart of enemy waters. His stories, while told with humor and nostalgia, told starkly the true story men like him wrote, all too often in blood, in history of mankind.
Sadly, the City of Chicago refused to assist the Silversides Museum in maintaining the boat and her mooring. She was forced to move across Lake Michigan to Michigan. Heaven forbid that Chicago have a famous retired US Navy vessel moored to NAVY PIER... biga** Ferris Wheel is great, but never something to tell today's generation why the pier was named, who it was named for, WHY we must remember their sacrifices , no no no... It did however, cement my path to serve in the USN when I was old enough. (Note: I managed to pick the single engineering rating NOT assigned to the Silent Service, Damage Controlman, who spends their life keeping a ship from sinking, so getting assigned to one that sinks on purpose was not in the Navy's realm of ethics! :har:)
Also part of my youth, though not as telling, is growing up with U-505 "tied up" to Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry http://www.msichicago.org/whats-here/exhibits/u-505/ . I have been able to tour that boat more than once, both as a kid, and with kids of my own. When I got to actually play a Type IX in SH3, it was so much more real to me, having actually been aboard one! Conducting an attack as skipper of one of these boats, having walked the decks of one, the memory, even sitting here in my truck NOT playing, literally raises gooseflesh for me!
I can not encourage enough, anyone who is interested in these boats, the men that sailed them, and the games SH3 and 4 (as a trucker, I don't have internet every night, so no SH5 for me :( ), go to Chicago, see U-505 (moored at the Museum of Science and Industry) and/or to Muskegon, MI and visit USS Silversides (SS-236). Walk the decks, see with your own eyes, feel the history of these two boats. IMHO, every single time you boot the game will be so much more, as it has been for me. I can't wait to find out what boat BuPers assigns me! I don't know how I'd feel without these experiences, but I can tell you, with them, every mission, every patrol on SH3 has been like a kid on Christamas!
And, even 30 years later, I can still remember the smells, sounds, feel, of my night aboard the Silversides.
(Downloading SHIV from Ubisoft as I type... can't wait to go on my first patrol! Johnny come lately I guess, but RL kept me from gaming since before SH4 came out! :damn: )

Really bad day at the office. On it's third run this Japanese tin can blew off my rudder and flooded my aft torpedo room. Unable to turn, and with heavy flooding, all I could do was surface, run away in one direction at 14kts and hose his bridge with 20mm. Unfortunately he caught up to me after a 15 minute chase...
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr114/MudcatC7/SH4Img2010-05-10_151750_086.jpg
He eventually ran up along side me and I proceeded to pump about 10 rounds of 3" into him until he was burning and decided to turn away trailing smoke at about 3kts.
Unfortunately I was now stuck in the East China Sea with no rudder and no way to get home. :gulp:

I was able to sink him with the 4th torpedo. Strange thing was he never tried to submerge but did fire at my periscope.

Yes I know, those are old screenies.;)
I tend to "brighten" them up for the internet. I don't know how they'll turn out on everyone's own computer.
I've actually been saving them as .bmp, but imageshack converts them to .png. I don't really like jpeg. You lose a lot of quality in that format.

True, you do lose some quality, but that's because it takes up less space, and space equals bandwidth, and that equals money for Neal and loading time for everybody else.

A merchant by her lonesome* was wandering the seas seeking her perfect mate. She had several suitors, none of whom she cared for, but one which was persistent eventually swept her off her keel. She fell for him hard, but alas, like many men of the sea, he broke her heart in two and left her crying tears of bubbles as she plunged into the murky depths of despair.
:har:
Enjoy.

I know what you're saying. I'm not hosting my pics on Subsim. So Neal doesn't have to worry about it. Yes they may take time to load, but so does everyone else's. Imageshack is a good clean provider. If people can't load a .png or bitmap, that's not my fault. That's why I bought a new computer. :yep:

Ain't got nuthin to do with yer 'puter.
It's about connection speed, and how much bandwith the host allows for downloading images. I've got a 8Mb connection, which is plenty for everything else, but .png is rather slow to load. Just a few ain't too bad, but a whole page of a thread would become problematic.
Please, do people who watch your screenshots a favor and convert them to .jpg. Posting .png will just piss people off, and I doubt that's why you're uploading screenshots.

Werehamster Small World. Here's a post I made about Silversides from about a month ago:
"I'm kinda suprised nobody mentioned the movie "Destination Tokyo". I think it came out around '43. In the film the boat was named "Copperfin".
I was living in the Chicago area back in the '80's and got word that a fleet sub was being refurbished at the Navy Reserve Pier, next to Navy Pier. The group doing the work found her just short getting scraped. They looked up the history and discovered this was the boat portrayed in the movie. Armed with that info they got her registered as a National Monument. A grant was probably given but they were looking for funds and volunteers at the time.
There was a lot of work involved as the boat went down by the bow in a storm due to the foward hatch left open. By the time I got to her they had her floating but the entire foward torp room was stripped. I was amazed how big the empty cavern was. The rest of the boat was basically cleanup, inspect, replace and repair. BIG JOB!!!
The tour was great. I even had a chance to get a look through the attack scope. Was surprised to see it was raised by exposed cables.
Anyway Silversides resides across Lake Michigan at Muskegon MI., open to the public...SK:
The foward torpedo room was stripped clean, nothing left but the tubes and pressure hull. We had to climb down a ladder to the bottom of the hull then up another ladder, attached to the bulkhead, to get to the hatch leading to the next compartment aft.
You will agree with me, I'm sure, that you could feel the life in her while aboard...SK
Yeah, Chicago politics...Silversides...Meigs Field... ... ...SK
