Nice, nice. I took a moored-in Yamato down once. I saved before, fired a total of 10-12 Mk14 torpedoes to it's bridge before it went down. I loaded and managed to destroy the depots with a total of 4 torpedoes. :arrgh!:
I think I have some pics of it back home, I'll try to put them up.

After we sank her, there was a huge tension inside USS Balao....All men were absolutely quiet....because everybody knew very well, what we've just done.Everybody in the sub knew, that we've sunk the symbol of the japaneese empire, which deserves to be respected all the time and forever....even it's burried now in Hiroshima harbor...........;)

First time I’ve ever tried to write a patrol report but I just couldn’t pass this up as I do not ever expect to have another patrol like this. I’m not going for any kind of real format so please don’t rip me for that.

After a recent transfer from Mare Island Naval Base to Pearl Harbor the USS Grouper left to patrol off Honshu on April 24th 1942. Arrived off Toyohama and proceeded towards the opening of the harbor around 2200. Spotted a large tanker coming out to sea but was spotted by 1 DD and 2 smaller patrol craft. Forced as deep as I could take the sub and evaded for 3 hours, lost contact with the tanker. Patrolled the area the next 2 days avoiding heavy patrol plane and surface patrols with no merchant contacts. Radioed ComSubPAC and was ordered to new patrol area off Northern Honshu. En route, took out frustration on 2 fishing trawlers with deck gun. Surprised to be engaged by machine gun fire from fishing trawlers, both dispatched to the bottom with approximately 4-5 rounds of HE each.

Arrived in Patrol area off Miyako and spotted a small convoy of 2 tankers and 1 merchant escorted by 2 DD’s before sunrise May 15th. Evaded front escort and fired all tubes at a large tanker (3 hits) and a medium tanker (2 hits, 1 dud). Swung around and fired aft tubes at a Medium European Composite (3 hits). All 3 targets sunk (approximately 19,000 tons), forced deep to evade escorts (minor damage to pressure hull taken).

Headed towards new patrol area off Tokyo Bay. En route, on May 18th found ourselves directly in path of another small convoy consisting of 2 tankers and 2 merchants escorted by 3DD’s. Again evaded 1st escort and worked towards the center of targets. Opened all forward tubes and fired 3 torps at a medium tanker, 2 torps at a small tanker, and 1 torp each at the 2 small old split freighters. 1st torp at the medium tanker was a dud but other 2 hit. 1st torp at small tanker missed but 2nd incinerated the target and both torps fired at the small freighters hit. All targets sunk for approximately 10,600 tons. Again dove deep to evade escorts and again suffered some minor damage and flooding, after about 5 hours we were able to come to the surface.

After reaching Tokyo Bay I decided to take the sub into the harbor and check out the anchorage at Yokosuka. Entered the harbor a little before midnight on the 22nd and sighted a Composite Superstructure Freighter. Fired one torp at periscope depth and broke her back (1,000 tons). Proceeded to the anchorage at Yokosuka harbor around 8am and could not believe my eyes, a Yamato class BB (1st time in about 4 different careers I’ve ever seen one). Fired all 3 remaining forward tubes and swung around and fired all 4 aft tubes. Luckily all 7 torps hit dead on target and Yamato slowly began to settle and capsize.

Since all torps were expended at diesel fuel was a little below 50% we made our way out of the harbor evading 4 escorts of unknown size. Surfaced many hours later with the battery down to about 15% and CO2 levels near dangerous levels. On the 25th as I was evading air patrols we managed to finish off 2 more fishing trawlers with our deck gun again taking small arms fire from the trawlers. Dove deep during the next week to avoid many air contacts and finally slipped into Pearl just before midnight on the 15th of June.

Thanks for taking the time to read this; I originally thought this patrol would be a bust after missing the tanker off Toyohama. Now that it is over I know that I will never have another patrol like this.

Good read, rrmelend!

I also found the Yamato at anchorage in the harbor of Yokosuka. I only had 3 torps left when I met her ... I unfortunately didn't sink her.

I found this strange sight upon returning to Pearl after patrol. It was misty and raining but I noticed something on fire so used the external view to investigate and this was the cause;

Thanks Kriller! Has this new patch incorporated some of your fine work? 'cos hot damn it looks good!

No the ROW textures work good with the new patch, I have added these mods witout any issues:
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/7554/rowcompma1.jpg

Try it ;)

But I think LeoVampire have to do some work on ROW's reflections of the subs and ships to make it 100% compatible with the new patch.

EDIT:
Be aware, we have now a horizon at 20km and the scene.dat is not changed by the patch, it still contains the value 1000 for horzion!

Until this patch that value was multiplied by 8 to get a horizon at 8km (1000*8=8000m). Some mods have changed the value to 2000 to get a 16km horizon (2000*8=16000m). I think the devs now change the multiplier to 20 (1000*20=20000m). If now a mod with its own modified scene.dat is installed, it may work but it could raise the horizon to a false value (2000*20=40000m) with unexpected sideeffects. The same might count on other values in the scene.dat:|\\

Until LeoVampire has looked into the above, I recommend everybody to delete the "scene.dat" from the "ROW Sky and Ocean controls/data" before enabling it in JSGME.

If you allready have applied the "ROW Sky and Ocean controls", disable it in JSGME and do the above and enable the mod again.

Allso I wont recomend using the new sub and ship reflections, because it contains the dat file of the ships.

Saw this today - the Kongo had taken 4 fish from USS Sailfish (all 4 fore tubes), then had a Philadelphia Experiment Experience and never sank. This was in 1.4, with NSM classic 3.3, but I'd already seen ship collisions with 1.4 without NSM, so I think it's the patch. The Kongo just kept plowing along through the water like that, screeching metal and all the regular sound effects of a collision. The crew on the DD's bridge seemed pretty nonplussed about it all too.

It seems that all japanese units kamikaze once in a while. I guess it's the novelty :hmm: Once I found a convoy and fired a few fish at a merchant, sank her and the convoy went crazy. Boats were turning randomly, and after a while the ship sunk sign started appearing on my map. I went to external view and saw merchants ramming each other. By the end 5 were sunk. :rotfl:

What parts of ROW were you using there?

Thanks

I use all ROW parts excl. all ship and object reflections and sky and water controls.
I have modified the scene.dat myself (horizon and lightning part) for bettter compability with patch 1.4.

The only Row problem I have encountered is flickering after using TC.
But this can be minimized by going back to 0 after TC.

Well, seeing I'm new to sub sims, here is the story of the best patrol so far in my career. Got orders to sail out of Manilla and patrol east of Celebes Sea. Got there and sank 4 merchants and 1 warship. The 4th merchant ship was detected by sonar in heavy fog and visually couldn't see him at all from the deck. I followed the signals and I was so close to him yet cannot see him. All of a sudden to my port side about 50 feet was a large composite ship with some Japanese crew members looking at me. Needless to say I needed a fresh pair of boxer shorts.:rotfl:Couldn't use no torps so manned the deck gun, made enough space and sank him. Making my way home and at that time the fog left. A fast destroyer was coming for me. I had just surfaced and batteries were low. Ony two forward torps left. Another clean boxer shorts needed.:rotfl:What to do? Can't outrun him. So I lined up directly on his bow, waited until he was close enough and getting shelled like hell, damages increasing. Sent the two torps into the destroyer's bow and whammo! the torps may have went under him and split his hull in two. Returned to base beaten up but alive. Got a wounded medal for my efforts.:arrgh!:

I'm playing patch 1.3, TM-1.6.5, with a modded version of RSRDC v110.
Took Gudgeon on her 1st war patrol 8 DEC1941. Destination was the E China Sea. Departed Pearl and topped off at Midway a couple of days later, then headed for the patrol area. 2 nights out of Midway, ran smack dab right into the Japanese task force headed for Wake. Spotted a Fubuki class destroyer and a Maya class cruiser. By luck, I was ahead of the group and slightly to the east. Got the Maya's base course and made an approach on the surface. As I was getting into position, the Fubuki veered towards me. Dove to 275' then popped up to PD approx 10 minutes later. There, in my periscope was a Hiryu class carrier just to the SW. Best range at firing time was around 1800 yds. For some reason, they were only making about 10 knots. Set torps for low speed and shot all 6 bow tubes. Ahead full, hard to port, to bring the stern tubes to bare. Shot 2 stern tubes. I hit her with 5 or 6 torpedos. Listing heavily to port when the Fubuki drove me under. Took her down to 275' and rigged for silent running. On the way down, got the message "She's going down". To quote Kossler "That baby sank".
Evaded to the west for a few hours, surfaced and tried to pursue along the TF's base course at flank speed, but, was forced under by several air craft and no advanced warning. Hmm....what's going on with our SD radar. Finally broke off and headed towards the patrol area. A couple of days later, nearing Iwo Jima, we were surprised again by a patrol plane - no advance radar warning. Hard to port and dove. The plane dropped a bomb which exploded just to port, damaging the deck gun and causing heavy leaking. So, returned to Pearl and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. As I was browsing my boat's systems at Pearl, noticed we had no SD radar on board ! Finally figured out I had to use some my new reknown to get one installed. Every other boat I've had already had one in. Next patrol assignment is just to the south of Tokyo Bay.

War patrol out of Manila. Intercept invasion force. S-42 boat. Mk-10 fish. Transited up the west coast to the north for our objective. Contact. A pesky DD. Hmm. check those out. Cruisers? 2 or 3 more? The 1st 2 are BBs. XO, Chief. Check this sierra out. Skipper we are 2/3ds of the way to our objective. Our mission is to engage the IJN. They are not the invasion force. Its a task force. Just so. That TF is going south, my stuff is in Manilla. Most of the crew re upped to be in the Phillipines. Its thier home. Skipper? Those guns can take out that bar and that hot number there I know is the best thing in your life with 1 shot. Periscope depth. Kongo or Ise? We can figure it out but I don't want the scope showing much. They can't see us from here. Yah I know this is my first war and you? Set tubes 1 and 3 to 15ft and 2 and 4 to 20ft. Range 900 yards. Fire 1, 2. Loose! Fire 3. Loose! Scope down. Fall off. Torpedo impact, 2nd, 3rd, Up scope. She's listing, slowed to 7 kts and has fire. Will she sink? Should we put #4 in another BB? Lets insure the first BBs misfortune. Fire 4. Loose! Down scope. Impact. She'rolling over. Let the boys each have a peek in the scope. Sonar guys say no thanks. They heard the result. Torpedo guys turn down also. They're loading the fish in the tubes. 4 shots with no duds and capital ship going down is enough for them. We will get a picture.Huh skip? Take boat down. see if we can get below the layer. No layer. Rig for silent running. 1 or 2 pesky DDs start working us with sonar and depth charges. Quite tenacious but clueless to our location. Transited up to patrol location. No joy. Only a pesky DD. While monitering DD detected merchant / passenger type targets. 1 fish per target. All hits with the diserable result. Invasion force politely waiting for direction on how to invade the Phillipines from thier mooring on the bottom of the sea. Details on request. Morale High. Directed Officers, Chiefs, and LPOs for leadership session in wardroom. While consuming cigars and contraband, coached group that thier life in the PI was over, and to make the boys aware of this the best they can. V/R,CL

But how do you go about taking a pic/storing to file?
If using Win XP, ctrl + F11, they will be saved in your main SH4 directory as .bmps.

You can then post them here using imageshack or photobucket, two online sites that allow you to store images. When you go to post them here, remember to convert to j-pegs as they are a smaller file size and are easier on the server here.

Edit: A link on how to post, it is from SH3,but the principles are the same: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=131414&postcount=1
If you have further questions, check out Dowly's guide on this, it is located on his sig.

I just disabled post processing filter, I always been a fan of it but for some reason I wanted a change.
Especially with ROW it works great.
One great advantage is a better night vision. With PPS enabled it's much darker.

Don't forget to lower the gamma setting when you disable PPS.
Otherwise you're screen will be much to bright.

Well, I agree that sometimes a Rose is just a Rose...
As Shakespeare wrote in Romeo and Juliet,
"What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet..."

A Carrot, however, is a much more complex Being. For example, Carrots were yellow or black or purple from the days of the ancient Egyptians until the Dutch bred the hybrid Orange version we know and love today. In that regard, the sunset picture with its subtly changing skies from purplish overhead to orange on the horizon could well have been intended as a visual metaphor for the History of the Carrot. One never knows unless one asks...and there is no such thing as a stupid question. ;) .....usually.

Then again, there is always the case of the deadly airborne torpedoe-carrot.

Well after my first patrol (bagged two destoyers) we came home and the whole boat was given leave until January 7th (can't play again untill then) Because i'm getting married on the 29th of december and of course there will be no time to go out sea again untill after the homeymoon. But as fate would have it I realized I left something on the ship and upon my return I was startled to find my fiance painted on the side of the boat!! as well as the two kills we got! so I thought I would share the pic with you guys... it gives a new meaning to the term

OK Guys What's Up Here not a breeding frenzy I hope:rotfl:

Instead of a single spawn time per patrol. The ships will keep spawning in one spot until the patrol ends for the sub.

Just like if you goof a set up continual spawns for a convoy and have them go to a port if you do not set them to delete eventualy on the last way point each convoy will build up in that port area until there are enough ships to slow the game down to a crawl.

What ever mod you are using someone forgot to set the spawn up to 1 time only or an auto delete.

USS Silversides (SS236) 1st War Patrol continued...

June 25, 1942, 21:30 hours: After inserting a US agent ashore at Katsuura on the coast of Honshu, USS Silversides was headed submerged at 100 feet for open water, when sonar picked up the screws of a merchant ship (Large Old Split Freighter, 6384 tons) steaming at 9 knots in close to shore. Remaining submerged, the boat maneuvered in for a periscope attack. It was not the most favorable position so the skipper was forced to take a long shot at 3600 yards. Torps 1 and 2 hit but number 3 missed. The maru was now, however, dead in the water...a sitting duck...so...

Moin Moin Kaleuns

Does anyone know the crush depth of the Balao-class-submarine?:hmm:
I have the trigger-maru-mod on my SH IV.
Yesterday, after 3 houres of depthcharging I got destoyed from two destroyers. That was a realy ugly time, I had. Because of damage I got prevously, I was limmited to aprox. 250 ft diving depth. I just coulnt get away.
After this I went to a new campaign.
I got a new construction out fo Mare Island, Cal.:sunny:
My first mission was to get to sea trials to test my new Balao-class-sub. First thing was a shallow dive test with some manövering and exercises to pull the crew together. We did some crush-dive-manoevers and some depthchanging exercises. Than we surfaced and got new orders, to proseed to a new pos. to do a deep-dive-test.
We got there and prepared to dive, when there came new info for the deep-dive-test.
We should go to test depth, and then go deeper. I was told that the first signs of to much stress to the pressure hull would show in the connig tower.
So we dived and went to test depth, to 400 ft.
Then we got deeper. At 450 ft the depthmeter was at the max, so I had to do it with the diveplanes. We went deeper 10 ft for 10 ft, to 500 ft, then to 550 ft, and to 600 ft. At 597 ft someone warnt me, “We are to deep”, but I couldn’t make out any signs of the sayed “to much stress to the pessure hull” in the conning tower, so we went deeper. By now the sub was, throuh the pressure of the water so heavy, that we couldn’t maintain depth with diveplanes at rise on the max and ahead 1/3 on the engines. We had to use ahead standard, to maintain depth. But because we were to go deeper still, we did it with ahead 1/3. The sub drew deeper at a speed of aprox. 8 ft/min. We reaged 610 ft, than 620 ft and so on. The sounds of the creacks of the pressure hull got louder and more frequently. But we went deeper still, untill evetualy at 661 ft  the lights begunn to flicker, and I new this was the beginning of the end. So I hit the emergncy surface button and got the engines to flank.
We reaged 11 knotes during the emergency surfacing manöver.
As we surfaced, we got new ordes to intercept a destroyer to test my abillety to track any targets that could reach me through mail.
After this test we finished ouer first day of triales and went to port for the night. We reached the habour at 10:30 pm an went strait to bed.
Tomorrow more of my seatriales if there is any interest.

S-38 (SS-143), 2nd war patrol
1942
Feb 18, Surabaya
After an uneventful 1st patrol to the Celebes Sea, S-38 and her crew are ready to depart Surabaya for a 2nd patrol. There are several new faces on board and XO Pete Reed reports everyone is ready to take the war to the enemy. We have apporximately 10 days to bring the new transfers up to speed on how S-38 operates.

Feb 27
We've drawn the Bashi Channel in the Luzon Straits. I don't think I could have asked for a better assignment, we should have plenty of opportunities.

Route to our patrol zone in the Bashi Channel, transit time approx. 1 week. We need to be on our toes as this is a hot route all the way.

Bad news on the radio, Perch (SS-176) is overdue and presumed lost. She should have been somehwere in this area. The crew is on edge as this information makes it way around the ship. David A. Hurt Sr. was captain of Perch.

S-38 makes her way north into the Sulu Sea on or around March 3.

Funnel aft, 2 masts. Appears to be a tanker. And Japanese.

Small Japanese tanker identifed on the morning of March 8, 1942
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v290/yurkb/sh4/AAR2/SH4Img2008-01-25_151625_.jpg

0902
General quarters signaled. Target's course seems to be NW at least matching our 7 knot speed.
0907
Took the boat to periscope depth. A surface attack is out of the question and I want to press this attack now because I don't want to risk running into the Japanese air force again while shadowing this target on the surface. We don't have the battery or underwater speed for an extended underwater chase. Battery is at 61%, that should be more than sufficient for this attack.
0913
The situation thus far
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v290/yurkb/sh4/AAR2/SH4Img2008-01-25_152658_.jpg

0918
All four forward tubes fired from roughly 800 yards. TDC solution was good. Number 3 was fired slightly aft, number 4 slightly forward.
0918xx
One impact heard, one heard to smack the target's hull as a dud, and 2 seemed to go right underneath which seems odd. All torpedoes were set to 10 feet, target's draft is 15 feet. Perhaps the rough seas played a part, unsure.

A fire is observed on the deck of the small tanker, yet she steams on.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v290/yurkb/sh4/AAR2/SH4Img2008-01-25_153244_.jpg

0926
Tube 1 reloaded in 8 minutes, the boys are working hard for this one. Maneuvering into position for a second attack

0938
Target seems to have put out the deck fire and is constant helming in a WNW course. Tube 1 fired from ~600 yards.

Torpedo impact
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v290/yurkb/sh4/AAR2/SH4Img2008-01-25_155212_.jpg

0938-0957
Target continues WNW at reduced speed, approx. 4 knots. Maneuvering for third attack, will soon consider surface engagement to conserve torpedoes.
0958
Sixth and final torpedo fired at this target results in our 3rd hit. XO Reed cautioned our torpedo would not have enough distance to arm as we closed to under 500 yards. We were close enough to hear the screams as she went down.

That should do it.

0958xx
Secured from General quarters.
1000
Surfaced and looked over our kill for survivors.

After the third and final hit, the tanker sunk in a little under 3 minutes. Total time to sink after first torpedo hit, 40 minutes. No survivors were observed
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v290/yurkb/sh4/AAR2/SH4Img2008-01-25_161514_.jpg

Long. 120 30E, Lat. 12 34N, 6 torpedoes left, 1 small tanker sunk, approx 1500 tons, resuming course to the Bashi Channel.

Thanks! Yeah it was strange because I had been evading planes and submerged in partly cloudy conditions. I TC'd for about an hour then back to periscope depth to check SD radar, I go to external camera and it's this mess. I must've ran into a hurricane in only a matter of an hour. :D

Yes, that Island is actually called Negros. Negro in Spanish means black. There is a tribe of natives there known as Negritos, or little blacks, who played hell with the occupying Japanese during the war. The story is they were so stealthy they would sneak into a Japanese barracks at night, kill the sentries, and slit the throats of every second sleeping soldier, so the survivors would would wake up and find they were the lucky ones. Maybe tomorrow night not so lucky. Sleep well, enemy soldiers.

Got this from a friend who grew up in the Philippines (his dad was Air Force, stationed at Clark AFB).

So after waiting months on the sidelines I finally pick up SHIV. Being a veteran of SHIII I decide that reading the manual and playing stock SH is for girls, so I promptly load up RFB + ROW + NSM+ RSRDC and launch my war on the Japanese. First Patrol assignment, Right of the coast of Honshu.... hmmm... well it can't be that tough, who's afraid of the Japanese anyway?... it's not like they just sunk 1/2 the Pacific Fleet or anything. SO I make it to my patrol zone and come across a convoy. It's moving fast and I'm getting the vibe that it's military. I think I see a carrier or 2 in the horizon. I resolve to shadow the convoy at high speed, get in front and cut in for the attack submerged. Unfortunately I get detected and have to go deep sooner than I thought. 3 escorts converge on me
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/8971/sh4img20080201181235625kk0.jpg

I manage to give them the slip but it's cost me precious time I end up needing to fire from about 4000. I up periscope to see 1 CVE , 2 CVs, 3 CAs a fleet oiler and a ring of about 8 escorts , I love RSRDC. Now in SHIII I always used the Weapons Officer for the solution and now I have no weapons officer. so this was my first manual attack in SH ever except for trying to put some torps into Mogami in training. I launch a spread of 6 torps at the CVE,

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/7669/sh4img20080201202028984mm7.jpg

Mixed results, I get a dud on the CVE and curse at the screen, but my misses end up putting a torp amidships into the fleet oiler and about 25% from the bow of the Shokaku. I think to myself well, at least I've bagged a tanker, and the CV should be in dry dock for a few months. But quite the opposite happens. The tanker proceeds at 3-4kts while the Carrier slowly lists and comes to a stop.

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/7214/sh4img20080201202536109lu3.jpg

I love NSM!

With the CV stopped and the list so bad that the deck is awash I put two more torps into her to finish the job. one hits a submerged AA barbette and the others prox fuse dets too early, no effect!

I Hate NSM!

finally I go to her stern and put one under her keel which causes instantaneous sinking. I think she just needed one more pint of water in her.

This one is of a Kuma-class CL I sank. I fired 2 torps, both of which hit towards the stern. She started to settle by the stern whilst moving. After a few minutes the stern was awash & suddenly there was this internal explosion (seen here) and she sank very quickly after that - vertically, stern first.

I'd like to share some of my experiences with my throwaway trash career that became a real one. Let me explain.

Usually, when I'm learning a game, I create a profile or toon with the most juvenile name I can dig out of the sewer of my brain, I call this my trash career, and it usually goes away after I start a serious career. Unfortunately for this skipper, he's doing really well, and his career is going to stick. Presented as a script, I give you:

The Adventures of Commander Fartface Episode 1 - part 1
A tor-what-o?

Players:
Commander Richard Fartface
Admiral Jefferson Connor
Petty Officer First Class Dan Burger

Camera Pans down over pearl harbor in the morning, zooming across the water towards a nondescript, grey building. it finally goes into a window over the shoulder of an oviously high-ranking naval official, a bleary eyed young man in front of him at what could only be described as "Barely parade rest"

Admiral Connor: So....Lt. Commander Fartface? How do you pronounce that?
cmdr. Fartface: *sigh* the way you think.
AC: you're joking.

FF: I wish. It's french. It means "Tree."

AC: You wish.

FF: S'cuse me.

FF takes a flask out of his pocket and take a quick swig, offering it then to Admiral Connor, who stands up sharply, pounding his fist on his desk.

AC: DO YOU MEAN TO TELL ME YOU'RE DRUNK?!

FF: Err...what time is it?

AC: IT'S NINE AM, "Commander"

FF: Then yes.

AC: YOU PIECE OF CRAP, IF WE DIDN'T NEED EVERY SINGLE OFFICER WE COULD GET OUR HANDS ON I WOULD THROW YOU IN LEAVENWORTH TODAY!

Admiral Connor calms down, flopping into his chair, obviously exasperated.

AC: Sit down, Dick.

FF: Oh, God, thank you.

FF crashes into the uncomfortable looking chair in front of Admiral Connor's desk, letting his head loll lazily over to the side.

AC: Look, Dick, what are you doing? You should be in this chair, not me. You're a genius! What... just help me to understand what is going on in your head?

FF: Oh, not much, I'm afraid.

AC: Well, you'd better get squared up, you're leaving tonight for Honshu. On the Pollack.

FF snaps his head up, his eyes wide, a look of horror smeared across his face.

FF: A COMMAND?! NO! ARE YOU SERIOUS?! THERE'S A WAR ON! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KID-THE POLLACK?! CHRIST, MAN, THAT THING IS...BARELY...*sigh* a...boat. So, punishment, right? No leavenworth, but a suicide mission into Tokyo harbor on a boat that probably won't make it to Midway before it sinks?

AC: Stop whining, it's brand new Oh, and your crew's fresh out of training or just reclassed into their new specialty, AND your rig's loaded with the new Mark 14's.

FF: We got no sugars?

AC: Plenty.

FF gestures wildly, his eyes wide, seeming to say "WELL?!"

AC: Not for you. Get out.

FF slowly stands up, saluting half-heartedly as he does, begins to stageer towards the door.

AC: And Dick, I'd get rid of those mark 14's ASAP. But you better hurry, no one else wants them either, and we've only got so many 10's

FF: Ass.

Admiral connor laughs as Fartface shuts the door.

shot: a long straight hallway, Fartface with his hand on the wall as he walks towards the door at the other end.

Shot: a bustling dock with a submarine parked next to it. Men crawl over it, lowering supplies down hatches, some are welding, others wield wrenches and hammers, torpedos are being lowered into place beside the boat, on the dock.

Fartface, squinting and shielding his eyes from the bright tropical sun calmly walks towards the stack of torpedos being tended to by an unshirted man who, at the Commander's approach stands stick straight, saluting

Petty Officer Dan Burger: SIR! PETT-

Fartface puts his finger to his lips, shushing the over-eager young man.

FF: Ensign, what's all this?

DB: The Pollack, sir!

FF: No, These (kicks a torpedo) things.

DB: obviously confused by this apparently trick question: They're tor..umm...pe...dos, sir?

FF: Tor-WHAT-os?

DB: Torpedos, sir.

FF: Ensign,

DB: I'm a petty officer, sir.

FF: Right. Ensign, Do you speaky the eenglish?

DB: umm...yes...sir?

FF: 'Yes, sir?' or 'Yes, sir.'?

DB: Yes sir.

FF: Good, me too. You drink?

DB: umm...sometimes, sir.

FF: Like whiskey?

DB: Not really sir.

FF: Me neither, here.

FF offers DB his flask, who takes a swig, coughing and sputtering, as the swig is forcefully ejected from his mouth.

FF: But damn if I can get my hands on anything else. Look, how many of these mark 14's have you loaded?

DB: sir, we've got four in the bow tubes, two aft, and 6 in the front magazine.

FF: take three out of the bow tubes, load mark 10's, one from the aft and do the same, then the reamining stores on the boat, fill with mark 10's, leave the rest of the 14's.

DB: Sir!

FF: Oh, and if anyone needs me, I'll be...somewhere else.

DB: yes...sir...

Some really nice pix here

My small effort

Taken by hitting the Delete key on the Number Pad which hides all the controls (and of course hitting Print Screen key).

Nice feature :D

That's an interesting screencapture...did you do something artistic with it in Photoshop? Or is that the way you actually see SH4 with your Rig/Graphics card. I'm asking because the distant mountains don't look quite right and your water looks very unusual. Do you have ROW Mods enabled? I do use all the ROW Mods, and with my GC (8800GTX) I see different visuals altogether. I'm just curious.

That's how I see it. The only thing I've done is to make the pic look a bit clearer and I don't use ROW right now. But what do you mean by saying the mountains don't look right? How do your mountains look like? Now I'm curious.;)

Here are two shots as I see SH4....These are reduced in size from my 1920X1200 originals.

I was referring, in my earlier post, to the fact that your mountains in your pic seem flat and ghosted out/bluish. I once had the same thing occurring with ships on the horizon. Somewhere along the line i got the correct set of Graphics card settings/Mods to make that go away. The pics above do not show a dramatic difference in the distant mountain skyline, but they aren't ghostly I don't think. I'll need to sail back to Dutch Harbor again to more closely match your pic's angle/perspective on entering the harbor.

As for ROW Mods, you really should get them....the Water makes all the difference...and the "reflections" are very evident in the two pics above.

I know that ROW is incredible, I had it installed some time ago. But then came patch one and I thought I wait until it is safe to use ROW again. Well, after a while I completely forgot to download ROW.
But I have to admit that I really like the mountains I see, in fact I think this is more realistic. If you look at moutains that are really far away you will just see some blueish, blurry images.

March 9th, 1942 116D53'E, 4D40'S 04:45 hours S-18 Boat USS S-23

We are on route from our last kill, a medium composit freighter weighing in at 3388 tons at 117D42'E X 4D42S. COMSUBPAC had just issued a change of orders for us after reporting this kill.

We are headed west toward the Api Passage on the west side of Borneo. We are going to have to pass the shallows north of Java to do this.

Suddenly the look out sings out ... "Ship Spotted Sir!" I climb topside and after some observing was able to barely make out a small warship, most likely a sub chaser. Our orders were to proceed to the passage and patrol for 96 hours with the task of anti-shipping and the leeway of HQ to attack capital shipping if presented.

So I was discussing with my first if we should pay this sub chaser any mind when the look out sings again ... "Ship spotted, ship spotted, ship spotted, ship spotted ... etc.!" I figure the guys been in the hooch and is seeing double so I call him on it and he swears up and down that he's stone sober and straight as an arrow and that I should take a look myself.

So I go topside again and grab my binos and scan to the sw of our position and "Holy Crap!" "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, .... by my count I have a 46 ship convoy headed noreast right into my line of fire." I order the radio op to radio the sighting and get a message almost immediately from COMSUBPAC ... it reads ... "This is an opportunity of a life time ... Put it to good use!"

My problem: I only have 6 fish left from two previous non productive encounters.

I don't know how many of these ships are escorts as yet, but right now the shallows north of Java is black with shipping, and I aim to hurt somebody.

I'll keep you posted, I'm going in ....

Sorry ya'll gonna have to wait. Last night after I posted this, I finally checked the literal time and it was extremely close to midnite, and I needed to go to bed.

I'll run the attack tonight and see how we do.

I'll post later. Sorry.

<edit> BTW ... I have 8 sub chasers an/or gunboats for escort, not a DD or Crusier to be seen!</edit>

<edit><edit>UPDATE ... RL has been a royal PITA ... for the past several days now I've been dying to get into this convoy and see what I can do but circumstances have not allowed me to do so. :( </edit></edit>
