@ Gunfighter, Armistead, captgeo,
Many thanks for your kind words, guys! I really appreciate it.
I'm working with each image for about three nights, from 10 to 20 hours on average. It’s depend on complexity, on my skills, and on my patience, of course. And always pleased to hear, that I spent my time not in vain. Thanks a lot guys!
Now I don’t exhibit my works for the SS contest at the UBI - SH4 forum, just because these are not "edited screenshots" from the game. Sometimes I draw from scratch; sometimes I use a non-textured 3D-model for the basic perspectives and to see the main composition of the picture for themselves; sometimes I use stock textures and brushes. But I use the screenshots very rarely. Reason: I like to draw from scratch.
I post my works in this thread "Silent Hunter 4" -> “Screenshots and videos” because it’s just a habit. And I really don’t know: where I can find a common topic of the graphic arts here on Subsim.
...What tools do you guys use, just photoshop, gimp...?
Armistead, I use Photoshop CS4 and graphics tablet Wacom Intuos 3 – really great tool for working with graphics.
Cheers! http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/a/ahoy.gif

Wish I had those skills. My wife is a very good artist and has even sold some of her past work. She mostly doe's Civil War stuff for me and always has me a painting for Christmas. She did me a beautiful one of the Hunley. I'll try and take a picture and post it. She mostly doe's brush work, but also computer.

Those are great skills, you should print and sell them on ebay.

:haha: It is kind of rising sunish maybe the IJN sailor would get filled with pride and forget that it was an american sub he was seeing until he got blown 200ft into the air along with a wall of water.

It is said that some brit artist was studying various colors for naval camouflage during WWII and he found that some hue of pink provided the least visibility but no self respecting sailor is going to sail on a pink warship.I think the hue was very odd though almost grey but still it was pink.We should really start a thread about camouflage we could talk about camo types and also post skins.

True, tried on some destroyers but didn't like it. Then the SAS found it and painted thier jeeps with it for raids on Rommels Africa Korps

Thanks Gunfighter. I'm learning..I get a few votes on my edited ones, but I just do simple stuff with PS and gimp. Starting to learn how to blend things, layers, ect. You and tei just do some amazing things.
Are you really 70? I'm 46 and we didn't learn on computers growing up, so I take it you trained yourself.
I do AC, but job related, guess I can learn that, but no doubt being an artist is a talent.

My wife may still have a few for sell on Ebay, I'll check and see. She sells some to a dealer in Charleston. My daughter is also a great artist. However, they spend so much time showing dogs she doesn't paint much anymore

I have won the unedited contest now twice in a row at SH, so pretty good playing with those...:salute:

Just plain SS's. You can see the whole series of the attack on my thread ..Attack on Subic Bay. The sun's reflection on one side as the moon came up on the other did make them look pretty good.

Also got lucky and caught a picture of lightening in the game. I'd never seen it in a campaign. Nice storm, lightening for almost a day. Did make some fraps of it, since it was nearly impossible to time a SS.

Here's a look inside the tower of TMO1.8. Basically the same, officer in shorts. Good thing is most of the dials are clickable and you can drive and dive the sub just using the dials inside the sub without the game icons. The diving angle is improved, really tilts better. I'm headed up now..Just took my Gar down to 600 ft.

i don't rember where i was at the time, but i decided to sneek into the enemy's port to shoot some fish in a barrel (i always love to see T3 tankers just sitting still) as i get closer to the port sonar picks up one contact, warship and is was darting all over the place. i pop up the scope to see who is in the port and who the little speed racer is. the port only had 2 good targets(a T3 and a good sized warship) and the warship that is flying around the port keeping uboat at bay turns out to be a PT boat. so i sit a wait too see how the PT runs around untill i find a good little gap i can sneek thou without being heard. so i take it and sneek right past the PT. as i enter the port i pop up my scope once more to see who is in town for the night. when i was all ready i fire 2 sets of 2, one set for each of my targets. as soon as the fish hit the water the larger warship starts ping me but that last for a very short time before he is hit and sinks. so i did take too much time to care about it. both targets are hit and down, but when i last had my scope my up i saw that there was a smaller ship off to the side of the port. so i slowly start turning my sub to line up for a shot from my rear. i come to a stop and pop up the scope to confirm all the numbers and she is all ready to fire with my scope blacked out. i was destoryed. so i go to the other scope and move it up just so i can see under water, and there she is, the PT sitting right over my bow. she was just sitting there, not moveing, nothing. so i fire of one fish to the target i had locked in and it whent down with a perfect keel snapper. so i go to look back to by buddy who seems to be having a BBQ one the back of his boat, he has moved a bit and dosn't seem to care that i fired from right under him. so i start trying to think of a way to get rid of him, running away probly would not work and trying to take him with the gun would not work cuz my gun is on the rear and he is over my bow. so i think back to a time were i was taking a DD on with my main gun, we end up running into eachother and the DD whent up in smoke and split in 2 were i was all fine besided a few hit from the DD guns. so i have a plan. i lower my uboat down a few to the bottom. i look up and he still has not moved at all. so i blow ballast and go ahead flank. SMACK! the side of her hall hits the tower and the bottom lands right on the bow. it sits there for a few short seconds then slides off and keeps going down. i head back to port with the best kill in my book to date.

If there is a better place to post this topic, please advise....

Or, how does one start a new thread on gaining access to the western approaches to Scapa Flow, and to Loch Ewe?

These are the two locations known to have floating docks, at least during the first 15 months of the war....

250 feet, almost glass water, no moon. tracking convoy heading NNE. the convoy is 4 columns across and 2 rows deep. I set up in the middle, so i have only one real destroyer threat. She passes over head. 3 minutes to kill zone i come to 95 feet and open tube 1 and tube 10. Havent' been spotted yet. I lose my sonar signal of primary target, and decide to go to periscope depth. surrounding are 4 large modern tankers. i've got clear shots to all of them, even if angles are sharp. 2 interst me, the leading tankers in colimns 2 and 3. 2 is at textbook range and aob, 3 may be too close. i already had AOB figured on 2 and speed. quick measure with stadimeter and tube 1 is launched. i notch the speed to 3 knts and get distance on 3, use same speed, guess the AOB, and grab a fast stadimeter reading, tube 10 is out. each fish breaks each tanker in two! i drop to just above thermal, drop a decoy and punch it to flank. when enough distance is between me and decoy, i drop speed back to 3 knts and drop below thermal and disappear. I have one fish left and am almost out of hostile waters. The USS Tiger Shark will be home with her crew in a matter of days.

TMO uses Env 5....I guess the correct order of env mods older to new would be PE as older, Env5, then New Real Env. Each has some good points.
Just have to be careful using it with supermods as they can effect sensors, ect., but I run New Real env with TMO without seeing any problems. I ran PE4 with the older TMO, I think 162, but with TMO1.7 I saw effects to sensors and now Real Env. is a much better env mod. TMO1.8 is stil Env. 5, but Ducimas tweaked it somewhat to better match Real Env.

Got peod at the ship. Gave it my last 3 torps and it just went right on..all three hit. Out of DG ammo and they had none I rammed it a few. Then just parked in front of it and stopped it. Went to take a leak and came back and we had a problem.....Took forever, like two dogs stuck...to get undone, but finally pulled away.

Night Action off Guadalcanal. A group of American cruisers stumbles on a Japanese destroyer-transport flotilla. These screens were taken using an AI surface torpedo mod that's being developed.

Early on, the Americans fire starshells to illuminate enemy destroyers.

The Japanese launch hordes of torpedoes at the cruisers and then most of their destroyers turn to flee. Havoc ensues in the US battle line.

USS Cod, late 43. After setting out from our new home in Milne Bay we turned north up towards our patrol area of Pelieu Island. We entered into our patrol area in the middle of the night. Our trim dive early the next morning was almost a disaster as the captain ordered a depth much beyond what the boat could handle, at 370 the first sounds of shorts were heard the damage reports started coming in, the captain blew ballast and accelerated back to flank to get up to the surface faster. We came up with nearly 75% damage. As the day wore onwe picked up a contact on the surface radar. After a quick plot on the map the contact was headed south-west at around 12 knots. We turned onto a paralell course and opened up to flank to get ahead of the contact. Then into an intercept point. We were well ahead of the contact as we slipped beneath the surface to periscope depth.

The contact it turned out was a Momi patrol vessel completely stripped of any ASW equipment. Bingo, warship target no possible chance of being attacked in reply and weaker engines than her DD equivilant. We slipped into our attacked position well ahead of the contact and running. She pulled into position and we fired off a spread of 3 torpedos. First 2 set to slow, shallow and contact detonations, 3rd was fast and fired about 30 seconds later. All 3 fish slammed into the target. The second torp broke her in two. The third slammed into the stern. She was gone. 2 lifeboats were observed in the water but they must've been thrown clear during the explosions. No crew were observed on the water. We surfaced and sailed north again to resume our original course. Elated at our success after the near disasterous trim dive.

deeppsi, just an FYI, Triton wasnt the first to score a kill, was the fire to FIRE torpedos at an enemy ship.No kill was confirmed or recorded. The explosion they heard was actually believed to be a premature explosion caused by the fauly magentic detonators in the Mark 14 torpedo, a very common thing for first couple years of war.

The premature explosions were confused as hits sometimes when skippers unaware of the faulty detonators and following the stay deep and fire on sonar bearings only method, were not able to see the torpedos as they blew up.

I forget which boat it was but it was an Asiatic boat out of Manila that scored the first US submarine kill of the war. However, the Triton is a fine submarine, take care of her.

First ever patrol in SH4

I'm ordered to take command of the USS Tambor and proceed to Japanese home waters. Along the way, I'm to drop off an intelligence operative on Honshu about 100nm northeast of Tokyo. I make the insertion without much incident...but it's hair-raising. The drop off point is just 100yd from a small shore battery! :o

On the way out I put two fish into a large tanker sitting at a dock nearby....but she held on floating. A DD was bearing down, so I hustled out of there.

We cruised NE along the japanese coast, diving every 20 minutes or so to avoid H6Ks, G4Ms, and pairs of A6Ms! They were, unsurprisingly, everywhere. One H6K was close enough to see us surface, but my gunner managed to shoot up a wing and bring him down.

We passed through the cut at the north end of Honshu (Aomori and Hakodate) without finding more targets. Once in the sea of japan, we were awash in convoys. :arrgh!:

Our mk 14 torpedoes were....difficult. :damn: Several times, I would just miss ahead or astern. After several attacks, however, I got them figured out and succeeded in downing a good medium composite freighter.

My fuel was down to around 60%, so I decided to head south into the East China Sea. On the way, I encountered several single merchentmen, who now decorate the floor of the ocean. As I entered the new area, sure enough, I got a "patrol these coordinates" dispatch from ComSubPac. I took the crew down there and we cruised around within a few miles of the coordinates for a little while. I'm glad we didn't stray...a radio report came in a short time later of an enemy task force heading right for us!:yep:

I carefully plotted an approximate intercept and kept a careful watch...then all of a sudden, the sonarman called out contact after contact...warship after warship. It was late afternoon and, sailing out of the setting sun (fitting, I felt), came a massive force. I managed to make out three pagoda towers and positively identified them as belonging to one Kongo-class and two Fuso-class. There were at least three heavy cruisers, probably Maya-class, in formation, several light cruisers, and around 10 destroyers and two oilers.

It looked something like this (making 12 knots, heading approx 060, inbound from the Phillipines towards Honshu, fat dumb and happy, not swerving):

.........DD(ASW) .................................................. . DD(ASW)

.....................Oiler (CA?) (CA?) (CL) (DD?) (Oiler?)

DD(ASW) .......Kongo Fuso Fuso (CL?) (CL?) <====== NE @ 12kts

.....................Maya (CL?) (DD?) (DD?) (DD?) (DD?)

.........DD(ASW) .................................................. . DD(ASW)

After plotting their courses and patterns, I made the decision to go for the lead Kongo-class battlecruiser. The lead ASW ships were set up (as above) with one directly in the lead, weaving back and forth...the other two off the forward flank points of the secondary columns were alternating making ~2000 yard breaks out/away from the battle line to sweep the flanks for submarines. I made the decision to try jumping into firing position as the DD on my side made her flanking run. We ran ahead of the TF to let the sunlight fade and then went to periscope depth and silent running and began gliding in towards firing position.

Our timing was perfect...as the DD wandered off 1500yd astern of us and the lead DD wandered around 1200yd of our port bow, we slid in just to port of the bow of the lead Maya in perfect firing position on the Kongo. The forward tubes were low on torpedoes, with only two remaining in tubes 4 and 6.

I had to make them count. I fired from about 1100yds and JUST got them in front of the Maya...I saw his prow cut the wake of my second fish! I put a total spread of two degrees on them (one deg starboard on the first, one deg port on the second). They were set to 5 feet, so I could make sure they hit. As the second fish cleared the bow of the Maya (maybe 300yd ahead of me), I dropped the periscope and ordered the chief to take us to 325 feet.

The torpedoes needed just seconds to race across the distance and strike their target... we strained with our might, urging our girl to dive for all she was worth. The stopwatch raced down to our estimated time of impact and....BOOOOOOMMM!!!!!!! ...BOOOOOMMM!!!! You could feel the gutteral exultation radiating off the crew. THAT WAS FOR PEARL!!! Not a word or cheer was uttered though.

As we dove for our lives, bending our course away from the target's last position, the tension mounted. It was preternaturally silent with the creaking of the hull, whirring of the electric motors, and the increasing disquieting din of a dying warship permeating the space. I looked back and saw the sonarman give an exuberant thumbs up as we heard a massive explosion and the repeated tortured cries of ripping/buckling steel. By god, we'd just sunk something huge!

The sonarman called softly "thermal layer!" and we relaxed ever so slightly. Waiting for the pinging to start, it became obvious that all hell was breaking loose on the surface. I could wave my hand generally in the direction of the ruined Kongo sinking into the depths...but there were sounds coming from just..there...and there! Which sounded like propellers suddenly thrashing the water madly and then squealing, crunching, clanging sounds. It sounded like ships were colliding with one another.

I can only guess that the battle line, in the fading light no less, saw the lead ship take two fish and assumed there were more inbound. They scattered in different directions and be damned any tin can or light cruiser which got in their way. We heard another ship explode and break up, but the sea was so confused that we couldn't make out what ship or what happened. (I conversed with the sonar operator about this briefly after he came off shift and he just tossed his hands up, saying "skipper, it was a mess, I couldn't tell you what was going on up there but it was ugly!")

I kept us down at 325' for another hour, moving along at 2kts away from the task force. We cleared our baffles and then rose to periscope depth. After clearing the horizon with the observation periscope, we surfaced and I let the men relax and celebrate a little bit.

We then made our way home and turned in a happy report of 64k tons sunk, 1 34000 ton Kongo, 6 freighters, and 1 H6K aircraft destroyed!!! :arrgh!:

heck yeah it was!
I'll admit, I was parked on the external camera, leaned forward, using body english to will both torps to hit. Man oh man, they did...and there were two giant, gaping holes in the Kongo..one just aft of the pagoda tower and one just ahead of the aft turrets. She capsized in about two minutes and sank in about five more minutes. I like the nice touch of the 20 lifeboats :-)

if youll check my luckiest man alive thread youll see i have a story of my own. :DL. but i have another :arrgh!:.

December 18,1942
I was trying a new supermod my friend had made.I was in command of USS Angler, a gato sub, with a seasoned crew with high morale and many abilities. it was supposed to actually make your sensorss stop working when heavily damaged. I had just had a bad encounter with a task force. i thought i could sneak in and blow a carrier or heavy cruiser out of the water and sneak back out. I snuck in at 0019 hours, perfect attacking condidtions. i, being dumb, pushed the boat to standard when there was 15 destroyers around. i got within 4000 m of that Shokaku before i hear rapid pinging. i turn my scope and theres a destroyer 400 m away.i had had automatic targetng, and i fired my torpedo at it and immediately i ordered hard to starboard and to dive, but it was too late. he dropped his load with pinpoint accuracy. i used external camera and saw that 5 dc were right on top of me. they knew i was there....time to push to flank. the dcs detonated. immediately 65 hull damage 1 bulkhead destroyed in engine room, starboard propeller 95% damaged, sonar destroyed and multiple sytems hit hard. i had a mod installed that estimated crush depth when damaged. only 100 ft. it would have to do. i dived and ran for my life. thankfully this was the only dd in close proximity so i swerved my way outta that mess.

It was now december 21st, 2 days after encountering the deadly task force. i reapired all that i could. the prop shaft would only god down to 40% damage with decreased speed and manuverability. i needed to sail home. i was too damaged to fight any big cats, but i could still take down some smaller vessels. i decided to take a long route home, seeing as how i had 65 fuel left still. i plotted a course that sort of zig zagged back to pearl. 2 days of nothingness was finally rewarded with a radar contact bearing 029 long range. i decide to see what it is, so i dive to periscope depth and push to flank. i reach the contact 20 minuts later. i indetified it as a large oil tanker. i needed this kill. i open my tubes and at 1200 m i fire. i score a direct hit at 7m depth and it mustve hit her soft spot because she split in two. i do a little victory dance and decide to just end this patrol. i delete all my zig zag course flags and head straight for pearl. on december 23rd i get a radar contact. it was bearing 139 and going "very fast" it was no doubt a aplne. i order dive to periscope depth, but i accidentally pressed e and i immediately surfaced. no time to dive. i ordered man the AA guns and waited as it came closer. it was a betty, and it was pissed. i watched on the bridge the aa gunners useless attempt to shoot it down. it dropped 3 bombs, one of which somehow did only 8 more hull damage but destroyed my A scope AND air search radar. as it was going away, my AA gunners hit the betty and it caught on fire. it didnt die, but it wasnt coming back. there was probably going to be lots of those bettys soon swarming me, so i dive to periscope depth and continue. after 2 hours submerged i decide to surface. the calm seas turned into a violent storm. i couldnt see 100 m in front of my ship. i was surfaced for only 15 minutes when all of a sudden i see maybe 10 flashes of light through the darkness. two seconds later i see giant gushes of water beside my boat and something hit us. it hit hard, doing 10 more hull damage and destroying a diesel engine.i realized what happened. my a scope and air search radar were destroyed, as was my sonar, and the mod made it so that i couldt detect anything. i mustve walked right into a task force. i order crash dive and when we wre 8 m below i ordered periscope depth. i knew i couldnt dive with the amount of hull damage. i needed to run. i pushed my engines to flank and ran. it seemed hopeless. they would outrun me. i checked my damage again and noticed my stern tubes werent damaged. i checked my ammo and saw i only was missing one torpedo. i knew then what i needed to do. i needed to knock out the dds one by one at close range.id still be running but as soon as i could get a lock i fired. there were at least 4 dds. 10 flashes of light means wuite astrong force. i needed to make my torps count. no hitting in the stern or bow. i needed to hit them in the middle, where it would really make a difference. the first dd caught up. it was 500m away before i saw it. i got a lock and fired. luckily it was swirving and it showed it gut. the torpeod impacted and in 20 seconds it died. 2 more attempts to destroy me were foiled as 2 dds went down. there was one or 2 left.i only had 1 torpedo. i also had a mod that allowed you to have all torpedoes at the start, and i used it once. i bought a cuite, as it had come back and saved me in that other patrol. i hoped it would have the same effect. i Spotted yet another dd. 700m away. i opened the tube and fired. after i gave the command to fire, i noticed that the cutie had a running depth of 6m too far down. it would miss. dammit. theres nothing stopping it now. 400m away. if the cutie was gonna do something it needed to do it now. and it did. it somehow impacted, however it impacted on the bow. my expiereinces tell my its not gonna go down. it was now 200m with 0 signs of going down by the head. i swirced franticall, however the prop shaft that was destroyed made my effort futile. i was now on top of me. i prayed for a miracle. if you read my luckiest man alive thread, youll see that one dd sunk by hitting my periscope. and oh lord it hapened again. it hit my periscope hard, casuing it to burst into small flames. it dropped dc's, but they missed. i waiuted for 2 minutes for it to sink, but it didnt. i time compressed and now it WAs starting to lean towards the bwo. however, it never sank. it was coming around again. my chances were slim. there was one thing i could do, it was radical and partially insane but i decided to surface and finish it with my deck gun. my crew was seasoned and my deck gun reloaded in 6 seconds.i did it. i blew ballast and asap i manned the deck gun. i swirved it around and fired. miss. the dd responded with its own volley, however it missed too. i checked my periscope and saw it was 1062 m away, and i aimed at 700. i corrected myself and fired again. hit. i kept unloading shell on that dd. the dd however was missing with its volleys. i fired again. hit. but this time it mustve done something, cause the small blazes turned into firestorms. i hit it hard . time to dive. i dived and just as i reached 11m the dd fired and if i wasnt underwater, it wouldve killed me. i time compress into two, and watch it as it goes down. after 10 minutes of massive blazes, i could see the propellers. it was over. it was finally over. i Happily returned to course encountering no resistance, and i breathed a sigh of relief as i entered paerl and docked. i recieved the purple heart and the silver star. they even offered me a new boat, giving me a balao class. and that is my story. sorry it isnt in paragraphs. ive spent so much time typing i cant edit it right now cause i g2g

Second patrol of USS Tambor, January 1942....

We left Pearl after refitting with orders to deploy to Honshu. I made the decision to stop in at Midway en route to make sure we had the maximum fuel possible on board (last time was too close, getting back to Pearl Harbor under 10%). We shaped a westward course to Honshu, gliding through the clear deep blue Pacific at just under 10 knots. The ship gracefully slides through the large rolling waves and the air is cool and crisp on a series of beautiful, stark, winter days. The nights are bedazzling with crystal clear skies and gods little lanterns just twinkling on and off in their myriad patterns. I allow the whole crew the opportunity to stand half hour watches on the bridge, just to give their morale a boost. It's that beautiful.

After several days, though, the pleasure cruise turns to business and the crew sharpen to their tasks. We're within 500nm of Honshu when the radar operator sings out for the first time... "Radar contact, 20nm and closing fast!"

We dive to periscope depth and now, truly, we're in the war zone. The men are working well and need little direction from the officers. It's only been a little under two months since we were last in these waters. We report in to ComSubPac when we reach the designated point near Honshu. They order us to engage shipping and keep an eye out for warships.

We begin patrolling, dodging below the waves repeatedly every day and cruising for long stretches at night. After three days of this, we've not seen much traffic off the coast of Japan...so I change our course.

I order the navigator to plot a course to the Yokosuka harbor and settle in for the two day cruise to get there. As we approach, the weather gods smile on the Tambor and the skies open in an intense rainfall. The ceiling drops to under 1000ft and the air patrols cease. It's impossible to see more than maybe 300 yards at the peak of day...at night, visibility is extremely low. We work our way along the main channel at under 8kts, feeling our way in...

As we clear the breakwater, lighting flares and one of the lookouts spots the outline of something HUGE at the dock. We slow and the sonarman can't hear any sounds of escorts anywhere nearby. We creep in on the surface when another flare of lightning reveals the outline of a huge aircraft carrier. I silence the crew and we complete a quick changing of the watch. We then submerge partially to reduce our outline and sound signature and I guide us from the periscope.

We maneuver carefully around to a firing position when lightning flares again...and again and again...suddenly it's clear that we're taking fire from somewhere...shells are whizzing past the bridge. :o They cease, but it's clear that someone's caught sight of us...they must be close. We've been spotted so we better make it count!

We get turned into firing angle and another bolt illuminates the hulk at nearly 90 AOB (really hard to tell, but it's a good broadside shot!). The tension is mounting quickly as we wait for searchlights or more gunfire. I prep a spread of four torpedoes and get them out quickly. I don't wait to see the results, and begin angling for the breakwater's edge! As we're gaining speed, the torpedoes begin to impact...one after another, four huge explosions. The secondary explosions were too numerous to count and, with the backlighting of her death pyre, we watched that fleet carrier collapse and roll. Scratch one flattop!!! :arrgh!:

The egress was...eventful! As you might imagine, the four destroyers who had been moseying around on the north end of the sound suddenly went to flank and headed directly for the Yokosuka naval dock. We made best speed to get around the breakwater and evaded them cleanly...almost...

One destroyer (Fubuki, I think, from the outline) was close enough to get a sniff of our sound trail heading away and gave chase...I spotted him charging up our wake with the periscope. His searchlights gave him away. Realizing that he now knew he had a submarine directly ahead in shallow water :stare:... I knew he was flat out. So, I did the only thing I could...I put a torpedo out of tube 7 directly under him in the desperate hope it might do some damage. It went cleanly under him and detonated under his stern quarter... he fell off lamed, but not sunk. He still had a read on our location with his sonar and was sweeping searchlights and occasionally popping a few AA rounds our way in the hopes of getting a lucky hit.

As the damage took its toll, he fell off to port and suddenly I had a beautiful target, even in the fog...two searchlights, one at the front and rear of his superstructure bracketing him for me....so I put a torpedo through the uprights and blew him in half!

With him gone and no other escorts nearby, I ordered us to the surface and made 16 knots out of the harbor and then out to sea... I was quite proud of my boys when I called in our report to ComSubPac. We're off to Iwo now, where the Intel boys think we'll find some shipping activity. The crew is confident and excited...I hope it lasts!

We had a close call after attacking a TF, thought everything was working out well got away clean, took out 3 of 4 of the Destroyer escorts with a crazy manuever. They start closing in on my position one at a time from their patrol points, weaving in pinging, slowly closing, set the fish for fast, shallow and influence, pop the periscope wait till they cross the thousand yard threshold and time out the turns and fire one. By the time they spot the torpedo its too late. Well the last Destroyer decides to come back and look for me after traveling 9,000 yards away. This Captain must be ticked cause he's coming at 26 kts.

Back to battle stations we have one mk10 and one mk14 forward and one mk10 aft, same drill except this guy is not swerving or slowing down, 900 yards out fire the mk10, Now at this point a smart Captain would dive quickly just in case, not me, to overconfident three for three doing this . The fish is a friggin' dud Steep dive ahead flank hard to port, crud prop sounds, not good, splashes, oh **** not good.

We got lucky. But he scratched the paint on my boat and a dent, my turn to be ticked blow ballast, periscope depth, hurry not much time. Set for shallow open tube 7, sonar contact moving slow and away, perfect. Pop the scope, there he is moving at 3 kts at 170 fire tube 7. Put a dent in my boat will ya (even though it was my fault) Big Explosion with a massive secondary empty lifeboat. Satisfaction

Just some pics from U-37's first war patrol...

Leaving Wilhelmshaven in early September 1939, south-bound towards warmer waters:

U-37's first victim of the war sunk in the Channel near Portsmouth:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=584

U-37 was surprised on the surface by an aircraft about 20 seconds after this was taken. The plane was probably nearby
and responded to the freighter's SSS alarm. The unidentified British plane dropped bombs but they missed to starboard.
U-37 crashed dive without damage and resumed her patrol:

Stormy weather on the way to our patrol area off the coast of Portugal:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=586

Showing off the new paint job on the conning tower. The crew really enjoyed painting those on. They're technically against
regulations but they're good for morale. Some of the men think the emblems are good luck and helped us escape damage
from our earlier encounter with the British plane. I suppose time will tell:

Yep, OM and OMEGU, which is based on Real Environment. It's fantastic.

You can change the color of the water based on the area you're assigned to. I think the choices are Arctic, Med and Atlantic.

Continued from previous post:

Upon reaching our patrol area off the coast of Portugal at dawn, U-37 ran straight into a north bound convoy. It was huge and poorly escorted, we could only see one escort. We quickly sent a contact report and were ordered to attack:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=588

Unfortunately Hans got some water into the camera so we weren't able to take pictures of the events that unfolded. We found ourselves in the middle of shooting gallery and a had plenty of targets to choose from. We sunk two ships but 10 of our torpedoes turned out to be DUDs and we had 2 misses. By that time we were out of internal torpedoes and had to disengage to bring our reserves down from the canisters.

We completed our patrol of this area without further incident. We encountered a few neutrals sailing alone that were allowed to continue on course after inspection.

U-37 was then ordered to proceed north of Ireland to cover the Western Approaches to England. We enjoyed great weather on the way north and Hans was able to fix the camera:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=589

We began our patrol and it didn't take long for us to run into another convoy sailing due North, probably Inbound SL-09. It was lightly escorted as well:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=591

After reporting our contact, we began our attack. We fired two torpedoes at a freighter, 1 hit and 1 missed. The target sailed on. We then fired another two at an old merchant, 1 hit near the stern and 1 DUD. By this time the convoy was in complete disarray, they probably didn't expect to be attacked so close to their destination:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=592

We hit an 8000tons tanker with two torpedoes near the bow and it came to a stop. We also fired at two other targets but all torpedoes were either duds or misses. By that time a destroyer was on top of us and I had to take U-37 down deep to avoid depth charges:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=593

While I was evading the destroyer, the two other escorts were doing their best to reform the scattered convoy:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=594

Being out of torpedoes, I had no choice but to wait out the destroyers. I also wanted to wait around and make sure to finish that disabled tanker if it did not sink before then. After four hours of evading, the escorts gave up and rejoined the convoy up ahead. I took U-37 to periscope depth and saw that they had left the disabled hulk of the tanker to its fate. It was listing severely from the bow and looked abandoned. Doubtless the crew had transferred to one of the destroyers. U-37 surfaced and prepared for gun action:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=595

Ready, aim, fire at will!

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=596

It took only a few hits to finally put her under:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=597

Out of torpedoes and low on fuel, U-37 headed for home around the north coast of England:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=598

The weather was typically stormy but the crew didn't mind, happy knowing that they were finally heading home:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=599

U-37 returned to Wilhelmshaven after five weeks at sea without further contacts:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=103&pictureid=600

I can't wait to hear what the other crews ran into on their patrols, but first I'm off to see sweet Helga at the gentleman's club!

Second war patrol of USS Tambor, C.O.'s log...continued...

After leaving the Yokosuka naval base in an uproar, we received orders to report to the waters west of Iwo Jima and patrol for enemy merchant shipping. Aircraft were everywhere as we made our way south by southeast out of Japanese home waters. I'm guessing they were upset at having lost a fleet carrier in her home slip:arrgh!:.

Slowly but surely, we got fewer and fewer aircraft reports until they ceased and, once again, the Tambor basked in sunlight by day and moonlight by night as she sliced through the chilly brine of the North Pacific. The crew's morale was as high as I've seen it...I daresay they were a bit cocky. The officers and I arranged to run a few crash dives and battle station drills to temper that confidence into operational excellence.

Arriving near the specified coordinates ~150nm west of the Iwo Jima islands, we began a star shaped patrol pattern, keeping our eyes and ears open and waiting. After two days with no contacts, I get a report that a large IJN task force is heading our way at around 20kts. I take the report of their approximate location and plot their estimated course. It's about three hours old and we need to make about 140nm in around 8 hours to even get close to them. We still have better than 75% fuel on board thanks to careful husbanding and the XO and I decide to make a play for them. We go to 19 knots and make our best guess where they're going to be. Hours later, we initiate a search pattern...to no avail :nope:. (OOC: The first time I played this, I ended up within 5 miles of the Shokaku, Zuikaku, and a Hiryu...jeez I wanted to attack that TF!!!! NUTS! I reloaded it about four times and never could get so much as an aircraft radar warning!)

I order the ship back to the waters off Iwo, hoping we'll find another target. The next day, patrolling the shipping lanes, we get a radio intercept reporting a small convoy approaching Iwo. We've got four fish left in the stern tubes and two left in the fore tubes. I decide to investigate and see what we find.

The sky is gloaming in the fading light as we get the first hit on passive sonar from one of the escorts. We alter course to slow our rate of closure and plot the approximate configuration of the convoy with the sonarman's reports. It looks like something approaching 12 merchants and four escorting destroyers. It appears they're using a standard box arrangement with one destroyer in the lead, one to each flank, and one trailing. The chief and I take stock of the situation and he recommends keeping the range open for a few hours to let the moon, bright in the western sky, finish setting. It's a good idea.

We change the watch, get the ship buttoned down at general quarters, and begin our approach as the waxing moon disappears below the horizon. The convoy is plowing straight ahead on a SSE course, apparently bound to the Marianas or the Bismarck Sea, I'd wager. No matter where they're going, we'll make sure a few of those ships find a final home in 17000 feet of water! :arrgh!:

We slide in from their starboard fore quarter at ahead slow and let the convoy walk into our firing arc. I draw a bead on the lead destroyer with one of my bow tubes. She's just finished a wandering sonar survey pattern and is straightened out, rebuilding her lead ahead of the convoy. Now or never, I tell the chief. We check the numbers, open tube 3, and let it fly!

The torpedo gets away cleanly, leaving its faint telltale bubble trail on the surface of the sea. With the moon set, it's hard even for me to see it through the periscope! The shot is a good one, on target and well timed. The destroyer's crew is sharp, though! About ten seconds before impact, the sonarman reports hearing her screws spin up loudly and I see her signal light begin a franting flashing. It's too late for her as the torpedo hits and nearly cuts the aft 1/3rd off the ship. Interestingly, while the explosion is loud and the water plume is huge, there are no huge fireballs. She buckles and slides beneath the waves in breathtakingly short order. I whirl back and forth on the periscope, checking for any sign of the other destroyers.

:o There are no searchlights in sight! The lead ship wasn't able to get a warning off! We're in, boys! :arrgh!: The starboard flanking destroyer is approaching, still holding the same course...apparently oblivious to the sudden deadly fate that took his buddies. He's going to pass within 1500yds of our stern, so I keep our speed under 1kt, keep the boys silent, and prep tube 7 for a shallow shot. Once again, we get a hot, straight, and normal fish boring right in on a warship. Once again, the destroyer in question never sees it coming and goes down hard.

This destroyer, though, goes up in a huge fireball, which wakes the convoy up in a flurry of searchlights and signalling. Taking aim on a good looking medium merchantman in the midst of the convoy, I fire our one remaining forward tube and order a right 180 at 3 knots to get us turned to engage with the stern tubes. The torpedo misses the ship I aimed at, but then strikes another merchantman in the starboard side just aft of the bridge. She takes a significant list and slows, but is able to maintain steam and bearing (hat tip to her crew and sailing master).

We finish coming about and targetting is...interesting. The convoy is going to hell in a handcart, with ships swerving and slewing back and forth. The destroyer escorts are having to tack well clear of the freighters to avoid being run down by their much more massive charges. They catch sight of us, though, with one of them going to flank speed and charging at us.

I get a good bearing on a zig-zagging merchant who will be at broadside after his next zig, at my best guess, and lob a torpedo at him. We're down to a total of three fish on the stern tubes and one seriously upset destroyer charging up our wake at 1200yds and closing fast. I take aim and loose a surface running torpedo at him. It gets close enough for a magnetic influence detonation just off his port beam. He slows, but it's not apparently fatal. I'm sure his bridge crew needed to change more than their watch! He's still in the fight, so I order a crash dive. As the chief sets the diving planes and floods the tanks, I turn the periscope back in time to see our torpedo strike the nose of a merchant in the convoy.

We dive fast and hard and I order the chief to throttle back to 1/3rd as we pass 200' and hear "passing a thermal layer!" from the sonarman. We level out at about 305' and I set silent running and reduce speed to under 2 knots. We spend around an hour in a tense silence while the sonarman reports, in a hushed whisper, the passage back and forth of the two destroyers overhead. I arc us around to the north and out from under the DDs, who are busily dropping depth charges to the south of us. I check with the sonarman and we find the acoustic signature of the convoy hanging around about 5000yds east of the destroyers. We increase speed slightly to 3kts and secure from silent running to let the fans and pumps work for a few minutes. The destroyers seem to take no notice.

After several long minutes, we've gotten close to the slow moving convoy and go back to silent running and reduce speed to 1.5kts for the ascent to periscope depth. We get faced away from the merchants and I pop the attack scope above the waves. The ships have obviously spent the last couple of hours rearranging themselves and are settled back into their box formation. I see the one injured ship with a massive hole in his bow, but the one hit in the beam is nowhere to be seen. I pencil it down as probably sunk. We take aim with the last two torpedoes and loose them at a 6000ton freighter on the near side of the convoy. We get two clean hits and she rolls over on her way to the cold deep.

We dive back to 300+ feet and make our way north. The destroyers have given up their futile depth bombing and return to the convoy. We call in the convoy and our patrol report. ComSubPac gives us a hearty well-done and orders us home..they will direct other assets to engage what's left of the now-denuded convoy. Two destroyers will have a hard time protecting that convoy if one of our fellow subs catches them up! :arrgh!:

We spend a few days making our way east until we're well beyond the range of any aircraft and then, with spirits high and a light larder, we kick up our speed for the run to Pearl, anticipating a few days of liberty on Maui celebrating our successes! The men earn several promotions, as well as 2 silver stars and a bronze star. The first round is on me! :D

28th of june 1942 Pearl harbour.

Today i got called into the old mans office. Lat time i was there was to recive my desk job after being shipless since december 41.
He greetet me politely. So are you ready for a new command?. I was suprised, didnt se that one comming...i fell over my wards...yes, yes sir.
Ok. Go down to pier 6 to se her, she just arived this morning. My mind was spinning while i gave the yes sir. What was this? would they give me a old ship, just something to get me out of the office??....
I hijacked a jeep and drove down to pier 6. On my way i could se the scrap metal from the Japanese attack. It will take som time to clean this base up. I turned around the corner of a storage building and almost lost controll of the jeep when i saw what was docked there..
This have to be a mistake...
I stopped the jeep and climped out. Infront of me towered this ship up. This was huge. I thought i was getting a small ship, but this one i didnt even know. A petty officer greetet me and asked if i was cpt L.T soerensen. I said yes, but what is that and pointet towards the ship. He answered. Sir this is your new ship, the USS Cleveland CL-55. Oh my god, they gave me a light cruiser, and the newest one in the entire US fleet.
I wount go into to many details, but the Cleveland is a light cruiser with the displacement of 10.000 tons. 4 boilers, 100.000 shp and a top speed of 32.5 kn
It got 12 * 6 in guns and 12* 5 in alot of AA guns and two seaplanes.
The next 3 weeks i was using to learn both the ship and the crew. My last command was a Destroyer with 121 crew members. This time i had 1.255 officers and enlistet men. We had drills, more drills and to finish the touch drills. But after a month with shore and sea trials we were put on the active list.
Doing this time i must say we drew a croud. Everyone wantet to get on board and se this new ship and i had to reject alot of applications to transfere to the Cleveland....

2nd of august 1942.
Departure day. This sunrise was the best one i have had in my time at pearl. No planes, the dockyard and the surroundings was quit. The only noise was from my crew preparing for the departure. We would leave in silence. I gave the order and the ship came to life. We had been using external power, but now the chief engeneer fires up for the 4 boilers and the ship shaked. Slowly we got free from the pier and with werry slow speed we turned port.
I called all hands on deck. When we passed the Arizona we gave a salute and hoistet the flag on half. This was it. We were heading into combat and we would join the rest of the brave souls who were fighting against the Japanese. This is our time and may the Cleveland be as strong as she looks. After this small tribute to our fallen comrades we startet the werry trivial normal days duty.
In my cabin i opend the orders. Patrol and engage enemy shipping. Then there were all the grid numbers, but basicly we had to go to the eastcoast of Hoshun Island and be a pain in the Jap butts.
I had to conserve fuel, this was a long trip, so we cruised at 17 knt. The rest is boring. Drills, more drills and again drills.

12th of august 1942.
A lookout spottet a search plane, a mavis. Dont think he noticed us, but this have deffently opend the eys of the crew.

13th of august 1942.
The AA gunners shot down a mavis that had a close look at us. All i can say is wow. From we noticed him to he was shot down took 3 mins, Glad for the drills.

15th of August 1942
We have arived at the most easternly grid of our patrol zone. We spottet a Japanese single merchant. We closed in on him fast we waitet to fire when he was directly at starboard side 400m. One volley and he exploded, yes we have finaly drawn first blood. But realy didnt like to do it. Warships are onething. But our guns against a small merchant, that is slaughter. But again they startet it, we will finish it.

18th of august 1942
We got a warning about radar signals. I turned the course so we would close in on its origin. at 0556 we spottet the first ships. 2 destroyers 1 light cruiser 1 tanker and 3 merchants. Battle stations, all hands prepare for combat.
They were on a heading due north. We were on the eastern side of them
. They were running 15-17knt. We turned due north and was sailing paralel with them at 10.000m After plotting a interception course we spanked the hampsters in the boilers and raced ahead of them.

1033 Hours
We were at the interception point, all was looking, where were they. Did they se us and ran we didnt know.

1100 hours
Radar room pings a signal. Could be them but then they have changed heading. We agreed to follow the signal and aproach doing the night.

0256
We have visual on the Japanese ships. They have not noticed us. We are crawling in range and the course are set on the attack route.

0321
We know have a shooting solution at the light cruiser. 9500m Opening fire. Our first salvo landed short. The second to far. But we got 5 hits on the 3rd salvo on the ligh cruiser was on fire. The detroyers tryed to find us and itwas actualy the light cruiser that open fire on us first. But the drills had worked and within 5 minutes we had more than 10 hits on her and she startet to sink. Fast we opend fire on the closest detroyer and we made a "bismark" 1 salvo and she exploded broke in two pieces and sank. Suddently the Cleveland tiltet to the port side. We were hit. Damedge control team scrampled to the damedge compartments. The Cleveland shook again, another hit. We shot at the last destroyer with all we had and finaly the aiming won over the panic and we landed 3 * 6in shells right in her bridge. It blew of. Next salvo landed on her stern deck and blew the stern of.
The merchants ran, but even though we had damedge, the crew had high morale and shot the 3 merchants out of the water.

0500
The damadge are worse than i suspectet. We had a hit right into the boiler room and lost the two starboard boilers. We had to run for home.

0814
Attacked by japanese planes, one scored a hit on our bow.

1057
Another Japanese attack, this time 2 planes and 1 destroyer. No hits on us, sank the ship and shot down the planes.
20th August 1942
The ship are stabil for now, but our radar room are spotting multible ships closing in on us.

1300 hours.
Our wach crew have spottet Ships, Battle stations, we cant run so we have to fight.

1414 hours
Yes 4 ships comming down on us fast. Cant se ship types yet, but they realy realy want us.

1509 hours
First rounds are falling around us. This spooks me since they are out of my range.

1518 hours
We got hit by a big shell, but finaly they are within range and i can cross the T. Finaly i could se what it was. 3 destroyers 1 one heawy cruiser. All fire on the cruiser and start to zig zag. Give those hampsters go pills in the last two boilers and get us what she can pull out of them....
Since we crossed the T they initialy could only fire light at us. We used that to hit the first two destroyers and sink them. But now the cruiser had its side to us and we were now in a slugging fest. We took some hits, but i have to say that my gun crews did good. They ripped that cruiser apart so fast that well now its there, and now its not..
The last destroyer was close and made some good hits on us. But one salvo from all working guns and he exploded.

1600 hours
This battle was maby the last one for the Cleveland. We were listing to the port side had 177 wounded and 42 dead. But we will try to bring her to Pearl

15th of september 1942
Today we knew we were close to pearl. USAAF search planes was flying around us. Hope she makes it.

17th of september 1942
Land in sight. All of us ran out to se, and yes there were the island, our home, she will make it.
0905
Limped into pearl harbour and docked up at the navy yards. After the normal chaos we had the wounded transfered to the hospital and i whent back to the ship. Yes she was scared. She was abit shot up. But the dock yeard maneger told me that i should give him 1 month and she would be fit as a lion again.
I climped into the jeep that awaitet me. Now i had to report to the old man, wonder what he have for me now.

Now its 1944 and me and Cleveland are stil going strong. Alot of sub story`s , here was one from a surface buff

This not really a patrol log I just got a little curious about some of the SH4 environment so I went on a little expedition.

Patrolled the Luzon Straits for 5 weeks searching for the Ghost ship, plotted a course around the t's constantly diving to avoid aircraft. So I finally decided to shoot the planes down, go to flank speed shift course port to starboard let the AA gunner have a field day. He managed the first on all right the second one not so well, got some hits on the plane, engine burning, circles back and nails us amidships. Gun crew and AA gunner dead. Flooding in engine room control room and forward torpedo room. I jump to the AA station and finish off the plane.

Alright damage assessment, pressure hulls severely damaged, batteries damaged down to 25% Diesel engines, radio, pump, a few other things, 40% total. Let’s see Trim pump destroyed, that can't be good. Change course and limp away while the crew works on the pressure hulls. Pressure hulls repaired but we still have flooding that is just getting pumped out. Radar contact, very fast bearing 197. Crap he called in friends. Get the Bucket Brigade going, HURRY. I give the order CRASHDIVE when the aircraft is almost in visual range. Thank god for the light fog. Reset depth to 120 feet Ahead Slow no point in testing the repairs. Were going to 130…140 speed 5 knots 6 knots that’s not right. What was broken again oh yeah the TRIM PUMP, 150 feet 7 knots, Blow Ballast get us up, NOW. Approaching 180 feet and she's creaking bad. Think Think Think what to do.........Uncontrolled Dive.......190 .........Emergency Back….Blow Ballast again. 200 feet down to 4 knots 220 feet 2 knots Come on Baby hold together. 240 feet and she’s really popping and creaking, 256 feet reading back 1 knot. 250 feet….240 feet 2 knots. We may get out of this. 3 knots 120 feet were going to make it, keep pumping that water out. 80 feet 3 knots, Break surface no sign of the plane he must have moved to the east of us.

http://i974.photobucket.com/albums/ae228/g2banything/SH4Img2009-10-27_193643_812.jpg

Water is all pumped out lets see if we can dive? Periscope depth, 50 feet 60 feet 70 feet, great, Blow ballast set to 50 feet, holding steady at 50 what a way to submerge. Now lets get out of here. Surface the boat, Ahead Flank plot a course to Midway. Conclusion, no sign of the Ghost ship.

http://i974.photobucket.com/albums/ae228/g2banything/SH4Img2009-10-27_200420_171.jpg

After some repairs at Midway I decide to take a trip to see the Golden Gate. Amazing looking but why is the sun setting at 10 hundred hours. Oh yeah were on Manila time I think. Oh well let's get back to Fremantle and get the rest of the boat patched up.

http://i974.photobucket.com/albums/ae228/g2banything/SH4Img2009-10-27_205728_062.jpg

Hey look at that were getting close to Antarctica, why not. Plot a course lets go see the icy wasteland. Nice sunrise, look at that the moon is coming up also, wait it's setting. What is afternoon going to look like in July around here? About an hour later sunset. It's pretty much dark for about 22 hours a day. May have to return in December to see if it’s light most of the day.

I seldom contribute, but here's one for the record.

As SH4 sees its last sunsets, we harken back to May 27, 1941.

Herr Kanug Rolfe Hass experienced the thrill of his naval career. He intercepted HMS Rodney and HMS King George V steering 145 degrees at about 18 kts at 0730 on that morning in force 15 conditions. Exact grid location at first contact:
25km west of the intersection formed by BE29, BE37, BE53, and BE61 (or about 1400km (per the game) west of Brest, France.

His Type IX (at GWX 90% degree of difficulty) used all remaining 6 torpedos on board to dispatch these two British battleships. After surfacing, U124 observed gunfire flashes far to the SSE where Bismark, spared interception by the battleships sunken by Hass, was engaged with other Royal Navy units.

Now here's the really mind-blowing part of this story:

Hass then moved SE towards the area where gunflashes had been seen. To his surprize he sighted the silohette of a large warship....Bismark!!
She was dead in the water, her upper works shattered presumably by 8 inch shellfire. U124 sent its contact report. Soon thereafter BDU sent out its message lamenting the loss of the Bismark. Little would the SH4 designers have known Bismark was still afloat, and deadly!

Hass then decided to stay near the stricken Bismark to see what would become of Germany's flagship. Incredably, two days later a large convoy traveling westerly at 7 knots stumbled upon the Bismark!

Hass then positioned his U124 between Bismark and oncoming escorts.THREE sunken destroyers later and SEVEN shredded merchants approximating 30,000 tons later, Bismark, while motionless in high sea conditions, had survived to fulfill her assignment to attack convoys. Toward the end of this engagement U124 had the incredible experience to witness 15 inch shells slamming into merchant ships, along with attendant explosions and sinkings.

What an unforgettable experience! What a glorious way to close the book on Silent Hunter IV's story!

I'd recommend anyone loving the game to mission in the Atlantic during May one more time. Save your torpedos, and head for the rendevous described above. Keep about 20-25 km NNW of Bismark - she's eastbound at 20 knots. You have to intercept the British before they commence firing on the Bismark. If you do, you are in for a very unforgettable experience - but first you must intercept and sink these two British battleships!
Happy Hunting. oblt Rolfe Hass

Same here for me. I installed Win 7 on my computer (always do a clean install when I do so) about a week and a half ago. Backed up all my versions of SHIV, put back in Win 7 and all run perfectly with no problems. I've been very happy with the upgrade sofar. :yeah:

BTW, here's a little screenie I made up the other day. I call it the "Talons Of The Eagle".

[ I can't even begin to imagine the frustration that must have been felt by real skippers in situations like this ---]

Patrol Report; U-9 [I forget what month and don't have my save game handy as I'm at work], 1939 (Type IIB)

Recieved orders from BdU to patrol grid AN-18 near Inverness/Moray .. Transited the Kiel Canal and set a course for England.. Crossin uneventful, saw a few allied planes, dove to depth and was not detected.

Upon arrival in AN-18 we setup a search pattern. Picked up a lone merchant on our second day of patrol at 0200 transiting to Inverness making 10-15 knots. Light fog, no wind and a full moon she was heading directly for us. She was carrying two large tanks on her topside deck -- a juicy target. Dove to periscope depth and put two fish into her side from 900m. Secondary explosions took the ship down quickly. Exited the area heading east after confirming the kill.

12 hours later, unknown contact on sonar, decided to investigate. Made flank speed north after 5 hours transiting diving every 2K for Sonar check we made positive ID on a british merchand on a southwest heading making 10-15 knots.

As we were already submerged and it was still daylight and clear, we dove to 60 meters and approached an optimal firing position. Target speed was nailed down to 11.5 knots. Fired two torpedo's at 400m distance, first torpedo impacted bow, second torpedo was a dud.

Merchant slowed to ~6-7 knots and turned north. we tracked for approximately 10 hours before she turned for home again and we were able to get ourselves into an optimal firing position (we could not surface and end around as we picked up a warship in the area -- though distant decided surfacing was too risky and I suspected the merchant would turn back for Inverness..

Fired last torpedo at ~600m, impacted directly amidship. Torpedo was a dud.

Empty we turned for home and left the merchant listing, but alive.

Return to home waters saw 1 more british transport, 2 warships and several Swedish merchants. Several allied aircraft spotted as well. We took fire from one at the very edge of English waters that we did not spot until it was on top of us, luckily my crew was able to get us under quickly and we were in deep water. Changed course at depth and made flank speed .. The aircraft hung around a good hour dropping bombs on our initial position, then along our previous course track. Remained submerged until nightfall.

Remainer of transit back to Kiel was uneventful.

I really should have listened to Werner when he suggested I disarm the magnetic fuses on my torpedo's as he thought the were 'squirrely' .. BdU has seen fit to fill my belly with some newfangled electric G7e's.. Let's hope they fare better.

Maybe if this patrol goes better BdU will bless my crew and I with one of those new type VII's rolling off the line. I could deal with 11 torpedo's in my belly.

One question more tough. You guys like have perfect pictures, some are really close to ship what makes em well, perfect! Well if i try to get close to my sub or any other ship "invisible barrier" just blocks my camera for getting close. Im just curious how to get rid of it.

Thanks! .. again ! :DL

Hmm, im in the game and im pressing Delete but nothing happens, all the stuff still remains on screen.

Sevrin
11-23-09, 11:53 AM
That depends on the mods (if any) you have loaded up.

Some will restrict camera views (TMO) while others, like the environment mods will have less restrictions on the camera, allowing you to by-pass that invisible barrier that stops short of the ship.

I used to run Pacific 4 Environments, and it would let you zoom anywhere, see anything.

Can't remember which key, but one of the 'F' keys switches to external overhead boat view.

TMO mod restricts what you can see, so I go to the bridge view and scoot it over (using the arrow keys + shift) to the side of the tower to get close in shots.

IL2 eh?

Also, the altitude planes drop the bombs in this game should obliterate themselfs when the bombs detonate. Or atleast get some damage by the shockwave. The explosions in the game are way much smaller than they really are.

Not necessarily, if the fuse is set accordingly:D

Waiting in my S18, got a contact and the sonar man continued this long list of warships..
'TASK FORCE' I bleeted to the crew and we sprung into action. It was close to midnight, and a slight mist layered the sea. I flanked speed to my intercept point, only going to slow speed when the escorts came soooo close. Not much time to line up and shoot.

Only one torp hit this carrier... I cried, and went out the back of the convoy where we eased pass this last escort with our hearts in our throats..

We last viewed the carrier (one of 3), a dark shadow of a wounded beast, listing badly to port. We've now turned to track our wounded prey, hoping that it'll fall out the convoy.

hehe, good eyes gunfighter. I actually like that one better. The water crawling on the con tower looks real. Almost looks like you could slip on the AA gun deck. I don't know which shot is better. I stayed around that carrier for about a day trying to sink it in shallow water, even tried pushing it to sea in deeper water...

I actually sunk 5 carriers there. The large Capital ships for the battle of Phillippines sea gather at Tawi and just sit in one long row long before the battle, so it was easy pickens''' I could never get this one to sink...out of everything...just sat there listing. I rammed the other Hiryu enough that it finally sunk...couldn't get this one to go.

I saw i left the h out of nothing...but ain't fixin it...less someone complain.....lol

I like this one best...if I had got one more first place vote, I wouldn't have got stuck in a tie..The water looks a lil crappy.

It was such a hard shot. The main smoke is a CA I sunk about 1000 yards behind me. I then ran over a lifeboat and got the big fireball they make. At the right angle the two explosions look like one, even though they are far apart. It looks much better bigger where you can see the full explosion.

Gunfighter and Armistead: I envy the work you and others are doing. I got an old PSP8 from 2004 I used to play with alot. I loved playing with transparent layers and applying them in different ways along with various lighting effects. I have not touched it since 2005. The other day I downloaded the trial of Corel "the latest flavor, X or something". I played for an hour, got lost, discouraged, confused, and lost my mind, THEN uninstalled it. I am going to reinstall PSP8 again. I have a ton of plugins for it also. Maybe I am going back to the days of the model "T", but at sixty I am reluctant to learn a new curve. I know those new proggys have lot of abilities. ANYHOW, I just wanted to let all you folks know that the work you ALL do is appreciated. I am meanwhile happy working only in layers....Shipsrus

No No you are never to old to start a new learning curve. You say you know how to use Layers and such well your halfway there.I am 70 and I love a new challenge and still learning. If you had a tough time useing PSPx2
try PSP9 or 10 they where good and your plugins may work with it should be able to pick PSP9 up cheap.Theres a free one called Gimp which is VGood also. And the main thing is to ENJOY it.

Thanx you guys...I was hoping for some feedback here, to see if any would be interested in a rusty S-18. Just getting it to this point has taken forever...even though I used FooBor's clean S-18 as a template.

Keeping it high resolution quality by using high res brushes. Things look real nice up close.

[quote=Armistead;1230725]Well, nothing we do touches what you do. I've got photo shop and something else I need to load...just never used it. Time to learn to edit.
Finally found some videos on youtube that were helpful.

The game is amazing the many water colors you can get, blues, blacks, teals, purple...I've been trying to mod much bigger waves....course I get those I screw other stuff up. I did get a blue transparent water, but seems a little purple, reminds me of PE4.

Wow ! Those Waves are high, You would never be able to man the Deck Gun, I remember PE4 Great Mod.I used to use PhotoShop but didn't like it,

The guy at the side tower is part of TMO.

I just loaded Corel and starting to work on some edits. Found some great youtube video's. Seems you can spend hours on one shot...time consuming.

You can really get some good unedit SS playing with your card settings. I use nHancer like most and run some high settings. You can get some real sharpe looks, but gotta have a rig to push it, cause high settings just for a little more sharpness causes quite a performace hit.

That's running anti alias in Supersampling mode at 4x4. I get a little perform hit with a lot of contacts, so seldom run in that mode. Also will cause the wires to shine underwater, so stinks for those, but doe's a good job on water SS..Good mode to try if you have a high end card for SS contest.ect.

You must have had it paused when you took that SS... (the sun reflection gets messed up sometimes) its best to go to 1 tc before you take the shot...

Throw this in there. I attacked the large JP TF in the battle of Philippines. I sunk one Y and finally got the other dead on the water. I bet I got 10 torps in it. Fell back put all my DG rounds in it. I even got beside it and JP planes would bomb it trying to hit me...just wouldn't sink. I tried everything, but had to leave it...Never have sunk two Y's in one patrol, almost.

Your UFO shot looks at what I just saw on the history channel of the UFO. Can't remember which citie, maybe LA, but several hundred people saw it, cops, ect...looked more like a triangle though....cool...

Was some amazing pictures people took. Air base said it was flares being dropped far away, but flares seldom hold a perfect pattern.

That where you got the idea.

Phoenix, was a fun time, people all freaked out :o somebody looked at the "flair video" enhanced, yep flares. But the other reports were a bit weird.

One thing you got to love about UFO's, they always show up near military bases....You would think that would speak volumes.

I was watching a very well known atheist. Not that I argue peoples belief, but as he was dishing God, he said it was possible the earth was seeded by aliens millions of years ago for human life and they check on us now and then....Then make fun of believers, but each his own.

Dang flying thingies, get in a hurry to bomb you and run into each other.

nice pics, really like the Zeros all lined up.

Just figure out how to edit the texture files, stock texture with Spearfish insignia. 2nd one is a FooBor's skin, I think the high res was draggin me a bit, But they sure are nice Skins  going SLI soon I hope maybe that might help. Got to have the eye candy
