Late January, 1941. USS Tambor. 1st war patrol.

My first war patrol using manual targeting. After many times practicing in Submarine school, I felt ready. Two modern medium merchantmen have already fallen to our torpedoes, so on to Kyushu and our assigned patrol area.

The next two days were spent dodging IJN air patrols. Submerged by day, cruising speed by night. On dawn of the third day, we pick up a radio contact, enemy TF moving fast, only 40 some nm NNE of our position.

We quickly kick her into high gear and submerge just as some Jap tin cans appear on the horizon. Sonar contact shows four DD's and one Merchant ship. She turns out to be a troopship, heading for the Phillipines or Java. We can do our boys some good, here. Silent run, move to 1000 yds of the estimated enemy TF's course. A couple of accurate readings, and when she is at about 1100 yds, we let fly with four forward tubes. I thought to save the last two, maybe we can get lucky and nail ourselves a Jap tin can.

Tick tick tick.....

"the torpedo is a dud, sir!"......"the torpedo is a dud, sir!" (oh, you gotta be sh***ing me!) boom....BOOM.... we blow two big holes in her big enough to drive my father in law's Packard through.... we dive deep, no DC's; all we hear is the Liner's screws slowly grind to a stop; no sinking noises, though.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c27/citrjazz/stricken_liner.jpg

Then all I hear is two Jap DD's screws, circling to aft. The other two are obviously sitting still and listening for us. Maybe these guys are green, and we caught 'em flat footed, but they sure aren't stupid! I hear "passing thermal layer"....it must be safe to pull away. I take her forward, and an hour later I decide to sneak up for a peek. We slowly rise, no screws. Silent as a whisper. Whaddya know? There she is, in the water to aft. We put two more fish into her and dive away.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c27/citrjazz/stricken_liner2.jpg

The Japs search for us for several hours (kudos to the AI, in SHIV!) but we manage our escape. Soon afterward, another identical convoy passes overhead, but we don't push our luck.

Rowing back to Honshu, and not fighting our boys on Corrigidor. All in a good day's work. Hershey Bars and Coke for everyone!

My first manual targeting campaign started spectacularly for a newbie like myself.

I set the vanilla game to 9x difficulty, only leaving external camera on for show (never to check enemy movement or anything).

So I was patroling north of the first Asiatic Fleet base and I got a report about a lone merchant moving roughly my way. So I put a rough extimation of it's course on the map and put myself into a good firing position (90 degrees and and about 1000 yards). I waited for the sound to come to a decent bearing and when it was close enough, I raised the periscope to take a quick look.

Then I noticed that I'm in the middle of a huge storm in the middle of the night. I could barely make out the shilouette of the ship so ID took a while, and range was taken via sonar, praying for a useful estimation. Bearing and the rest was easily done.

Due to my lack of experiece in these conditions and "live situations" with manual targeting, I put quite a spread on the fishes.

One of them hit in the boiler room or some other sensitive area and brought it down.

After the firestorm quited down, the poor fella sinked to the bottom.

Since I managed to hit the ship despite these conditions and becasue this is my first real manual targeting situation, I consider this hit a smashing success. :)

Well, I had a close call earlier today...

Was out on a mission with the USS Trout, Tamobr class. Cant remember where and when but that isnīt important. I got a "heads-up" from the HQ on a convoy heading my way. I went on to meet it.
When i had them on my sonar, I dived to periscopedepth and lined up at about their 11 oīclock. And as usuall, they had an escort up front, one on each side and on behind the convoy. And as you all know, the one up ahead usually goes ahead of the others with a series of S-turnes. Thats why I lay a bit on the side (with intention of later get right into the middle of the convoy).

But as the escort had completed itīs S-turns, it will head back after doing a 180 degree-turn, right. So I was watching him closely as I felt I might have gotten too close.

Damn! this is gonna be close! I didnīt wanna start up the engines if not neccessary and 1/3 backwards might just be to little anyway so I layd still hoping for the best.

First task force attack:
Dec 43, off Java.
Spotted a taskforce on radar at dusk was for once in a good position to do something about it. Went deep, snuck in and popped up in the middle of 2 Kongos, 4 Mayas, a Hiryu AC and some ancilliary merchants, covered by 4 DDs.

The DDs were all over me so I "Hail Mary"ed the front six Mark 14s at 1500-2500 yards at the chunkiest targets, sprayed the chasing DD's with the rear tubes. Couldn't resist watching the mayhem, got one DD behind me and was expecting a lot of misses up front when I hear "torpedo impact!" One hit on the Hiryu set off a chain reaction on the aft flight deck. SCRATCH ONE FLATTOP!

Dropped to 180m and crawled away. Lost the deck gun in the ensuing hammering but made it out of there alive.

Too bad I don't have a surface radar at the beggining. This task-force totally took me by suprise and had no way to get ready. I missed two juicy carriers becasue of this. :( But at least they didn't find me. :)

http://www.sg.hu/galeria/986752963/9867529631232411189.jpg

And lastly, a typical "HOLY SH*T!!!" moment. I was forced to shell a merchant at point blank range because of the heavy fog. Apparently I got myself an armament transport, I was too close and the resulting explosion took my boat out as well.

I loaded up the Tokyo Express mission and just messed around the Bismarck Sea. Here are a few shots from a Nippon Maru encounter (running TMO 1.63).

For some reason I just like this shot.

I really wasn't expecting the ship to break in two. I sent four torpedoes at it, but one was all I needed.

Ever shot a torpedo at a landed airplane? If not, this is what it looked like:

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/Jonbeee/Silent%20Hunter%204/planflyger.jpg

Landed some hundreds metres away, lol.

Was the 10-tonnes airplane worth a torpedo? Definetly!

I've always wanted to torpedo one of those planes. I just didn't want to waste the torpedo in case I came across something really nice like a warship or big merchie.

Well, since I'm new I'm gonna wait until I get convoy attacks pretty well down, which is what I was working on. So basically I'm running the tutorial for convoy attacks. Also, sorry I don't have pics, just not skilled enough IMO to sink and snap pics at the same time.

I start off with a angle on the convoy and keep at 40 ft below so radar still has some use. I use this until I'm within 5.5 nm of the convoy. Then I go to periscope depth and every 5-10 mins I go to 40 ft and do I quick radar check. After a good chunk of time I'm within the escort screen and decide, 'Hey, this is some prime real estate, lets take a shot' since there was a group of six merch's. Fire the Forward fishes and... too far out. I've also managed to attract the escorts... at least two of them. So I dive to 90 ft and since I'm new decide to use the external camera to track where things are along with the hydrophones. this goes on for maybe 20 minutes then I go to periscope depth and pop some more fish off at some good-looking merch's. All four hit on two different targets, but... they don't sink, some impressive fires but no sinking. http://forum.americasarmy.com/images/smiles/icon_mad.gif

Dive to 90 ft to avoid escorts. Surface. Find targets. Repeat. That goes on for a short while and I got all of my forward tubes reloaded. using the 'phones which I then back up with the external cam I see a merch steaming perpendicular to my Aft tubes. I go to periscope depth, take the shot, and dive. Just one hit out of two fish.

I'm down to five fishes. Four in the front one aft. Using the phones I find some merch's that are close, back up that data with the external cam and go to periscope again. For the record I have four ships burning but none of them will sink. I pop off a fish and get ready to fire another. Then I hear a vey loud noise. 'OSHI-!' (EDIT: As it turned out a Jap Escort missed me by about oh... I don't know... 20 FEET!!!) So I crash dive with only one fish heading towards the merch that I had hit about 30-minutes ago. I stop diving, lower periscope and switch to external cam to watch the fireworks. Miss. The merch saw my fish and reversed. After thinking a few "happy thoughts" I go to periscope depth again, line up another shot on the same merch, aim near the aft (slightly behind the breadbasket, where there was already a nice fire) and let her rip. Dive to 90 ft so I'm not in too much danger and switch to external cam, I watch the fish go in...

BOOM! Nice big hole near the screws, she's dead in the the water if not sunk. Matter of fact, I thought the fish was gonna miss. But it didn't and I semi-successfully atacked a convoy.

tl;dr version: I do a convoy ambush tutorial, takes awhile, end result is three ships burning nice and bright and one sunk. Used all but 4 fish. Epic Win... for a inexperienced player.

An oldie but a goodie...I'm running v1.5 with TMO 1.6.3, RSRDC, TMO HUD Update, Different Smoke. New campaign with an "S-Boat" in Asiatic at start of war. Coming off a long patrol with only 2 merchants to show for it, now re-approaching the Luzon Strait from the North and I pick up a convoy steaming opposite me, bearing about 300 from me, a few hours after dark. I come starboard to parallel course (turned away to not get spotted while I gather information). I can see 1 escort and 1 Large Modern Tanker, plus smoke from another beyond, making 358 at 7 for base course. I work around front and report it, then go deep and silent to let the lead escort pass me. Eventually he does and I come to 090 to set up for a DOK shot at ~ 1,100 yards. I order periscope depth and set my fish...

My scope breaks surface just as the firing bearing is being reached and I am just steadying up (perfect timing). My plan is to fire 3 fish into the liner and save 1 for "emergency". For some reason my night scope doesn't seem to be zooming in right, as the target looks small. Oh well, fire 1. As I wait to fire 2, I see another ship enter my field of vision from the right--my intended target. Whoops! I let the 2nd fish go at the distant target and then fire 3 and 4 at the large modern tanker. Not only was my timing perfect, but the angle was such that both ships were set up (better to be lucky than good...). But I'm figuring I'll not sink the tanker with only 2 fish (assuming no duds, but that is one thing the Mk10 has going for it...).

BOOM!! "She's going Down" BOOM!! Massive explosion on the tanker, 1 shot was enough. Me, I'm hitting the jets and going deep. Then, 2 more satisfying explosions. This guy went DIW but would not sink, meanwhile 2 escorts are now coming in (sonar said there was another but I never saw him...). A long evasion with no real close calls until later when I eventually conclude the escorts are out of DCs. So, I reload and finish off the other guy (Hog Island).

Moral of this story: With the DOK method the range to target is irrelevant if you have the rest dialed in...

Okay, so this was my first patrol in career mode, 1942. I was ordered to patrol Honshu (specifically the Tokoyo bay area.) So I leave from Pearl and along the way I encounter a Merch, all by themself. Sunk real nice. So then I reach my patrol zone and decide to take a trip into the entrance of Tokoyo bay to see what I can see. I find coastal batts. (not much I can do bout those eh?) But, I did manage to spot a cruiser that was doing a wide zig-zagging pattern at the mouth of the bay. Wait maybe an hour-and-a-half plotting his course all the way. Once he's within 2000 Yards I take aim, and let loose 3 Mk 14s. They hit. First I fired two and they both hit, but the cruiser still would not sink. Fire a third at the bow, BOOM! "Ship destroyed!" Leave the bay area to avoid search planes or other ships (trust me, I encountered plenty.)

So I was making my way back to the original obj. and get a contact of a convoy of what turned out to be two escorts and seven merch's. Seems like prime real-estate so I line up a shot on the lead escort. She goes down fast then open up on the merch's before the other escort gets here. I couldn't shoot for S*** unfortunately. So I ended up sinking a warship and two merch's in that engagement. Then I had to avoid the last escort which took at least two hours, maybe more. She also damaged my deck gun. So after three engagements (one merch, sunk. One cruiser, sunk. Two escort ships and seven Merch's, one escort and two merch's sunk. And to top it all off I had just two aft torps. :damn:

So what ensued was me waiting for 48 hrs to pass avoiding search planes and ships since my combat effectiveness was practically 0. Patrol time ends and I leave for Midway for more torps. Then to Pearl to finish the mission.

All told, five ships sunk for ~14,000 tons.

After learning from my mistakes in my first patrol I decided to put my changes into practice on my second patrol. This time I was patrolling the South China Sea. I departure, stopping by Midway along the route.

Once I'm near Hunshu and almost to S. China Sea I pick up a merch on radar. Go to plot an intercept. takes maybe two, three hours (game-time) then when I'm almost within visual range I go to periscope depth and wait. Being careful to fire with my aft tubes, so I have my Bow tubes for later I let one loose. Hit slightlybehind amidships. I surface and finish her off with the deck gun. One Merch down.

Continuing on my way to the obj. I encounter a small convoy. Five ships to be exact. I plot intercept and go to periscope depth. It's a stormy, stormy day. Turns out there is just one Merch and four Escort destroyers (Troop transport eh?) Wait for them to come in range, mind you I'm firing from Aft tubes. Merch is good to go and pop two fish off. Both hit near the screws. She sinks in roughly five minutes. Could've been faster if there were no escorts. So I go ahead 1/3 silent running expecting a traumatic DC expierience, but not before popping two fish off at the nearest escort, who promptly goes to flank and avoids. Searchlights come on but in the wrong direction! :rotfl: I suppose since I took the shot from outside the escort screen the didn't think to look outside. So I slowly leave, a nice 9.5 tons racked up.

Third of my fourth engagements, nearly to S. China Sea. Encounter a lone merch on radar. Pretty much the same deal as the first. Pop a torp off hit near the fuel stores and she goes down fast.

Final engagement. I've been patrolling for bout a day and run into another lone merch. Same deal as my other lone merch engaements only I get harassed by a search plane that happened to be in the area before it flew off. So one fish, hit. She's still up. Go to finish her with my deck gun. But the other ship has one too. scared me a bit but I had a better crew. Leaving about two dozen holes in the waterline and shooting up the other gun she split and sank. I then return to the objective area and got orders to go to Philippines.

I'll post what happes there in another report.

tl;dr Four engagements, 25k tons sunk. And encountered four escorts with IDIOTIC cpatains.

Here is one of my nightmare scenarios. This is how I justify doing stupid things like attacking a task force in shallow water: As skipper of my boat I "day dream" the scenario. If it ends bad, dream over, and I go back to normal oporations (I reload the save ). Here is one such bad ending. I'm running TMO 1.63. My first patrol in mid 1942 is with USS Thresher (Tambor class) out of Fremantle. I am ordered to recon the Singapore harbor. I do that and try to sink a moored Nippon Maru. Most torpedoes don't work right and I give up. I head east back the way I came. Upon my exit I stumble upon a task force bearing right down on me. Problem is the water is only about 130 feet deep. I am about 120 feet, silent running at 1 knot.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/Syxx_Killer/SH4%20Shots/SH4Img2009-01-27_153807_062.jpg

Thus begins my "day dream." I order periscope depth and see a Hiryu, two Fusos, and a couple cruisers. I try to take out a Fuso. I launch my six forward tubes at the ship. Five detonate. The ship slows to a stop and lists heavily. I have definitely pissed off the hornet's nest! As I slink by I launch two more from my stern tubes.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/Syxx_Killer/SH4%20Shots/SH4Img2009-01-27_162012_078.jpg

A few moments later there is a generous explosion.

Time for a digression: Oddly enough my FPS weren't much better than what those pictures show. That NEVER happened before. I know it is because I updated to the 181.20 drivers. With my old 169.21 drivers it would have been better. Anywho, back to the "dream."

The destroyers are closing in. They are ping happy as well. By now I know I am most likely doomed with the water as shallow as it is.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/Syxx_Killer/SH4%20Shots/SH4Img2009-01-27_162324_453.jpg

Needlesstosay, after that pic it wasn't long before a depth charge scored a direct hit and I was toast.

My XO noticed me in a cold sweat and started asking if I was ok. In a low tone I reply I am fine and give the order to maintain 120 feet. :ping:

Wow, nice catch, SK. Definatly something to light up a cigarr for  .

havent seen any battleships like that yet, hhope they are in TMO even though they are supposed to be harder to find.

My gratest achievment when attacking a Task-force was with SH4 vanilla. Sank 2 bigger aircraftcarriers and 4 smaller aircraftcarriers in one go. To be honest, felt a bit too easy. Ran at normal difficulty and about 60%. It was in the beginning of the war so perhaps the crews were rookies, I dunno...

I sure wish I could have kept that kill. The destroyers saw to it that I didn't, so no cigar for me. :x Upon reloading the save, I just let the task force sail right over me. There was no way I could take out one of those nice juicy targets in such shallow water and survive. It sure is a cool thing to be so shallow and have a Hiryu sail right over top of you. It was really cool to listen to from the control room. I could also make out the Fusos as they sailed by, too.

This thread has been begging for a story. I hope you enjoy it while waiting for your game to arrive.

Extreme Angle

The boat had spent some time at a Florida port, probably Port Everglades. Before leaving, we had taken on some important guests. If memory serves, they were Norwegian Navy officers. We were taking them on a short “demonstration” trip to strut our stuff and show them what the U.S. navy was made of.

After the maneuvering watch was secured, I had the 12 to 18 which meant I would have twelve hours off between 1730 and 0530 – an ideal daily schedule almost like shore life. This only happens one day in three while underway, and it allows one to enjoy an almost “normal” night’s sleep free from the prospect of drills or field days. Usually, that is.

An hour or so after dinner, I was in my rack reading a Stephen King novel. I usually had trouble sleeping when the boat was surfaced but not because of the motion from the waves. It was the sounds of the lapping water rushing over the hull that intrigued me so. It was so peaceful and calming, that I didn’t want to miss hearing it. The sea that afternoon was very calm, which added to the tranquility, and as I lay in my rack, I could feel the gentle sway and hear the slight creaking of some metal on metal somewhere within the ship.

The 1MC bellowed, “Dive! Dive! Dive!” as the Klaxon horn sounded. Usually we all looked forward to the dive in order to escape the rough rolling seas. This time however, I actually wanted to stay on the surface. I was getting sleepy and was ready to succumb to darkness when the sound of the diving alarm quickly snatched that away. There is always high tension at the onset of a submarine’s dive. There are just too many things that can go wrong to be comfortable with it.

The sound of the air escaping from the ballast tanks was loud, and as normal, the boat continued running on the surface. Then slowly, the bow began angling down as the ship started it’s decent towards the depths. From the inside, it’s almost imperceptible at first as the “angle” during an initial dive from the surface is very conservative. Submerging dives are made very carefully.

From outside the boat, an observer would have been able to see streams of water shooting upwards from both ends of the boat as the ballast tank vents opened and allowed the air in the ballast tanks to escape. The forward vents are opened a couple of seconds before the after vents, so the forward tanks fill slightly sooner than the aft tanks. This helps the boat achieve the down angle needed to descend into the depths. If an observer had been watching that day however, he may have noticed that there was not as much air gushing out of the aft tanks as there should have been.

Lying in my rack, I felt the boat pick up the normal slight “down” angle as we submerged. I subconsciously expected it to stay that way. During my very first dive, I was sort of disappointed about how little you see and hear. It’s less dramatic than, say, taking off in an airplane. You feel the deck tilt a little. And if there is any swaying from the waves, it stops. That’s about it.

This time was different. The slight down angle began growing steeper.

688 class boats are designed to be “tilted” up or down by as much as 45 degrees. These are called, appropriately enough, “steep angles” and they are rarely done in peacetime. A normal or typical up or down angle, when the boat is fully submerged, is more like 20 or 30 degrees. Down angles when submerging are probably no more than 10 to 15 degrees.

Even laying in my rack, I could feel the down angle increasing. Soon it was about 30 degrees, about the maximum considered normal. Since my feet were pointing forwards, this meant I could feel a bit of pressure on the bottoms of my soles as they began to press against the bulkhead at the “foot” of my rack. I was partially “standing up”. My first thought was, “Those show offs! The XO is trying to impress the Norwegians with some sort of steep dive.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The angle grew steeper.

Soon it was at 45 degrees, the most I had ever felt. This may not sound like much of an angle, but it means that it’s just as easy to walk down the bulkheads, as it is to walk down the decks. Mobility is in fact impossible. All you can do is hang on. The crew needs to prepare the ship before such steep angles, or it can be dangerous from falling objects.

I heard the expected outcries of surprise, liberally sprinkled with profanities. Shoes and sneakers tumbled across the deck, and I heard loud crashes from the galley.

The angle grew steeper. Now, the bulkheads were more horizontal than the decks. I wasn’t just anxious about the dive anymore, I was down right scared. I knew something was wrong as I was basically “standing” on the foot of my rack. I was almost paralyzed with fear wondering what the hell was going on. There was nothing that I could do other than to trust my shipmates in the control room. At that point I think I shouted, “Blow damn it blow!”

The angle continued to grow even steeper, maybe to about 60 degrees. I kept thinking to myself, “C’mon guys, this aint right. Blow the f'n tanks or we’re going to loose the ship!”
At that exact moment, I heard the distinctive roar of the Emergency Ballast Tank Blow system being activated.

I wave of relief came over me almost instantly. “Whew that was close. The chief of the watch messed up his trim tank calculations. Stupid idiot!” We should be ok now. The angle should start decreasing and we will head back to the surface and recalculate the tank levels. The high-pressure air having pushed the water out should be bringing us back to the surface.

Except that it did not.

The angle grew even steeper still. Right through to 70 degrees. For all practical purposes, we were vertical. The sound of the EMBTB system air was heard again and again. I knew from previous experience that when the EBTB system was used, it WORKED; it took just a few seconds of air to bring the boat to the surface.

It wasn’t happening. The ship was not responding.

I heard a very weak voice come from the 1MC: “Loss of depth control.”

The wave of anxiety rushed through me, but when I heard this, I knew my time had come and I accepted that.

Amazingly, I could still think straight and panic wasn’t even a shadow of a thought. I wondered if the air was just escaping right out of the ballast tanks grates, without having any effect since we were almost vertical. I believed that we would die within a few seconds. Crush depth for a 688 class is not all that deep. I heard the hull flexing and popping as we descended deeper and deeper.

The mind begins to work in funny ways under these conditions, I guess. An incredible emotion swept over me. I guess you expect me to say that I felt peaceful, almost relieved. That’s not how I felt. The feeling was one of intense despair and sadness. It was an almost indescribably dark and miserable feeling, everything negative that you can think of, all rolled together: anger, disappointment, sorrow and terror. It was beyond a doubt the worst feeling that I have ever had.

I wondered how cold it would feel for the brief second that I would still be alive when the water rushed in to seal our fate. Suddenly, I wanted it to be over. I could only hope that it would be quick. The hull continued to make popping sounds under the immense pressure of the depths. When it finally gave way, I wondered, would there be any sensation at all? Would I feel like an ant being crushed under a steamroller? Would there be an avalanche of intense, infinite pain just before the abyss of death? Or would my mind just “snap off” like a light, with no final sensation at all? That’s what I was hoping for. I was afraid that somehow I would survive the implosion for a while causing me to feel the sea water being forced down my nose and throat, filling my lungs to capacity and drowning me like a bilge rat.

So what will it feel like to die, I wondered? I honestly believed that I was about to find out. As I waited, I felt the boat begin a slight shudder.

Gradually, the angle began growing less severe. Soon we were at 60 degrees, 45, 30, then horizontal. I don’t remember being “relieved” at all – I was too emotionally exhausted to feel a thing. I just spewed four letter words with my shipmates, and that took off some of the edge. A time-tested sailor’s trick.

On the surface again, we took it for granted that we would NOT try the dive again until we knew exactly what went wrong – and it was fixed. Just minutes after we had re-surfaced, word spread that the Executive Officer, wanted to try the dive again immediately. Even before the EBTB tanks were re-charged with high-pressure air. Fortunately, the captain had more sense. He made an announcement to the effect, “The ship will not, I repeat NOT, attempt another dive until the problem is found and rectified and the HP air tanks have been re-charged.” Now the wave of relief finally came.

I think there could have been a genuine mutiny that night.

Apparently, one or more of the after ballast tank vent valves had stuck shut. Because air couldn't escape from one or more of the aft tanks, there was a large bubble of air back there, holding up our back end as the front end submerged deeper and deeper.

What saved us? I don’t know. I suspect that the extreme depth made the bubble in the aft tank smaller (air is compressible, of course) and that decreased its effect, enabling us to regain control of the boat.

I have no idea how deep we went. No one really knows how steep the angle was as all the bubble indicators were maxed out. Scuttlebutt says that the Sperry gyroscope in the torpedo room trips at 75 degrees, and it tripped. The reactor too is supposed to automatically shut itself down at an extreme angle. I was told that something went wrong with the sensor, and that’s why it remained running. If it had shut down, it would have been the end for sure since we were using "Emergency Back Full" reverse to help slow the descent into the depths. Without the propeller spinning to help hold us back, we would have shot like a torpedo to the ocean’s floor. Divine intervention? I would like to think so. On this day, we all walked away lucky to be alive.

My first time playing this game and i started playing with manual targeting, of course i read a guide and took some practice :yeah:

Just as usual i was sent to patrol in East China Sea to get merchant ships, so after hours of patrol and never found anything  , i decided to go back to refit.

So there i go in my way back to Midway for a refit, and i spot a Convoy Woooo, i start silent running, and line up to take down some ships, i aim at the closest to me it was a medium tanker, shoot 2 torps it's at the bottom of the sea, rapidly aiming at a Passenger ship before the DD approaches me, shoot 2 torps more and it's gone.
Then i just go deep and start going to midway for the refit and i spot another convoy :timeout: , torps didn't even finish to reload, i surface again, take down two mechant ships more :D, start aiming very fast because the DD was approaching me very fast
shoot 2 torps again (This was my first time using aft torps) 1 misses :damn: that ship was going like in a zic zac, luckily second one hit it  and it's done.

In total i sunk 5 ships for a lame 25-30k tons :wah:

Hello all,
Just a quick log for you all..Iam running with the easy targeting and Run silent, run deep capmapign. Also have pacific environment 4 but everything else is stock 1.5.

Anyways started out with my first command! U.S.S. Sealion a Sargo with a leaky head. Iam based in Manila and so I depart on Dec 10.
I cruise for most of the day on the 10th and run into a small convoy late in the day. A destroyer and 1 Huge Euro Liner. I was drooling at the site. I worker a round about to the front of them and set up for a side shot in the liner..As she lined up I let loose with 3 torpedos..1 prematured 100 ft out but the final two hit for a sinking.
Late in the night of the 10th I came across a unaccompanied Huge Euro Liner. Cheez where was her escort. I ran at top speed to get around to her front and laid and waited for her..As she came into the sight for a good shot I let loose 3 more Mark 14's. All three scored good hits. Jap's short one Liner..
So I hauled butt back to Manila and restocked on fuel and Mark 14's and headed north...
Dec 18,
Came across a large convoy of 3 Large euro liners and 3 Medium euro Liners..escorted by 2 destroyers. I set up for my run and dived deep under the lead tin can...popped up just off the right of a medium liner and let loose 2 fish into..1 premature but the second hit her in the midsection for a good kill. I had a large liner behind me so I swung around and let loose 3 fish..1 prematured and two hit her in the midsection..she sank. By this time the destroyers where on me and pingin hard so I dove deep and worked out to the east.
After evading I resurfaced and opened her up for some air..boys are jaming Mark 14's into the tubes as I make my way back around to the front and work into the side of them again...Again I dove deep and went silent to get by the first tin can. Lined up a huge Liner and popped 3 fish into for a kill..lined a medium up as the tins cans where bearing down on me and let two go hastily for another good kill. Dove deep and worked my way back around for the end hook..and another pass for the final two.
Night was upon me and the destroyers are pissed off at me..they started pingin me just as I lined up on the huge liner on my 3rd run at this convoy...I let loose with 4 fish starting at her front and ending just before she left my sights. 1 prematured but the other 3 hit solid for the kill.. that left the Meduim who I let pass and was at my 9 o clock..I swung hard to the right and lined her up for 3 fish out the Sealion's tail...All 3 hit hard and she went up with a blaze of cargo and men flying threw the Air.
The tins cans where on me by then and them captains werent happy. The depths charges hit the marks as I crashed dived away. Took major damage to the dive planes with where inop and numerous other items that the boys in the Sealion where able to patch up.
I surfaced on the 19 th and headed for Manila at flank..evading another massive convoy and what appeared to be the main invasion fleet of the Philipines.
Wasnt fired and handed out 4 awards to the boys..rearmed and spent a day resting up before out next patrol....

Well, I'm running an S-Boat career in Asiatic fleet, 90% realism, no radar. 3rd war patrol out of Surabaya, working hard for contacts in meeting assignments. I'm doing the agressive patrol of area, submerging every 20 nm and doing sound sweep. Nothing but a few sniffs, and not in position to intercept. New assignment takes me to near Singapore. More traffic, but still tough to get intercept position plus water is shallow so have to keep tabs on that. I plot out the tracks though and establish the traffic lane so I set up and wait. Sure enough I get a couple of merchants, so all is good. But fuel is waning and I head for home (now Freemantle). Blunder onto a 3rd merchant that I manage to take out as well, now out of torps...I clear the Lombok Strait and decide I can make Freemantle (barely) w/o steaming to Darwin (marginally closer). I consider a save but I don't do it.

So, I'm closing in on Freemantle, 4% fuel left and warning that we are in shallow waters (duh, we're headed for port...). All of a sudden crash! Sound of water leaking, some damage reports, 5% hull damage. I go outside with camera and see a big rock I'm grinding over. Aaack! I don't want to repeat this. I go to battlestations and fill the DC positions, ememrgency surface (though I'm on surface already) and back up. No flooding, so ahead 1/3 and slowly cruise the last few miles to Freemantle to end the patrol. Thankfully no fuel leak (although likely could have come in on battery if I could submerge far enough to start them...) or other show stoppers...

Lesson Learned: Periodic saves are your friend!

Sometimes the game is just to generous, if that is at all possible
Running Stock 1.4 with greenlamp, nomograph and (the bit§§ of it) NSM4 classic

It is my third patrol in the Gar Class Grayback on 20th March 1942, ordered to recon Yokosuka. Everything was uneventful - a couple of planes - up til Tokyo Bay. Just before I was getting close to the entry, I found a Task Force.
:o
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u239/AngronIsAngry/ouch.jpg
About 6 battleships with 2 Yamato Classes.
I hit the lead Yamatos keel beneath MOT and beneath the hindmost turret (with following explosions). A third torp missed aft, passed beneath a medium tanker and detonated beneath an unidentified battleship. Shots 4 and 5 got the underside of what I think was a Kongo Class. The final torp got the bow of the second Yamato.

I don't know if it was panic, but :ahoy:
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u239/AngronIsAngry/drunk.jpg
I'll have to admit they were cruising with a visible sake level before my attack. :()1:

Reloading and escaping the escort destroyers was rather simple as they circled a decoy of mine.
But just as I wanted to overtake the Task Force for a second attack run (since nothing has been going down. laid lower, leanning to the side yes, but no sinking ... thx NSM4) my sonar guy started to annoy the hell out of me!

Usually he just gets me out of time compression for a fishing boat or two, but this time he was motivated.

OK I get a misson to patrol in the northern waters of japan. Its right around the time of the Battle of Midway but I figured by the time I made it back from my last mission I had missed the battle...how wrong I was.
I head outta Pearl at flank speed and head to Midway and top off. All was quiet and so I head for northern japan. I get halfways and my crew starts throwing a hissy fit about mutiple warships spotted...I was like "ut oh" maybe its the rearguard of the battle fleet steaming towards Japan. So I decide to wander up and see what the fleet consisted off.
As I get to my area to set up on any of the ships 3 destroyers pop up and head straight for me. I dove deep under the tin cans and made my way northwest where other ships have been detected. As I get to the middle row of ships low and behold a kongo battleship appears about third in a line of 5 ships. So I set up on her and made my run.
As I came upon a good firing solution I let 3 fish out of the forward tubes. The sea was rough and all three of them prematured. I was cusring the mark 14's! I then let him slip by and headed out of his gun range to do a end sweep and get in front of him again.
I finally get in front of him and the boys got the forward tubes reloaded. I wasnt gonna miss this time!! I set to within 1200 yards and lets the first of all forward 6 tubes go. He was cruisin at a high rate so I led his nose a bit. The first of them prematured but the next three hit hard and sank him as the following two was a bit overkill...better to be safe than sorry...scratch on Kongo.
So I went to take a look at the rest of the battle line after i broke to the south and flanked them. I then headed north into the line and whooaaaa..A shokaku fleet carrier. My mouth went dry as I started to set up on her. I let loose 3 of the fish the boys got loaded up and two prematured. I was cursing...but one of the mark 14's hit her but did little to slow her down. I stalked behind her and evaded the tin cans that came after me and seperated from them and went to pursuit of her.
I came up on the shokaku again with no torpedos left in the forward tubes and only 4 remaining aft. So I started hitting her with my deck gun at about 2000 yards and worked my way in. I was just trying to get the big girl to slow enough to hit her. I pumped about 50 rounds into her lower belly. That slowed her to about 16 knots. Thats when 2 more tin cans showed up and drove me under. I evaded and headed south for the end hook and work my way infront of them again.
It was a race but I think the lined finally back down in speed so I was able to head north and get in front of them. first on was a destroyer wich I dove under. Second came another Kongo wich I let by..Then the Shokaku came.
I watched her knowing I have the aft tubes ready but she tried zigzagging around me. So I had hit it reverse but she danced the opposit way and then I layed in flank ahead while submerged...that brought her to my aft and then I set her up. I knew she was fast so when I seen a good solution come up green I aimed just to the right of it and lead her. I let all 4 fish go along her right side. The first mark 14 prematured..I cursed the ordance boys as the last 3 hit her hard. The boat was cheering as loud as could be. Scratch one shokaku fleet carrier. My first ever....
So out of torpedoes I headed back to midway dodging aroun 3 tin cans and another Kongo. And a hoard of planes. No scratched and 60000 tons in two ships and all torps expended..I havent evan reached my first objective. So the Drum is shoving off reloaded and fueled tomorrow after i throw one hell of a party on shore tonight!!!:arrgh!:

Sept 43-TMO for 1.4

Finished my patrol off Honshu, mosied on down to the Solomons for refuel and refit. Got more than a few loner freighters on the way, ran out of torps and ammo for everything except the rear 40mm AA gun. (Very handy for hosing ships, the old 40mm). By the time I was off New Ireland I was out of all forms of ammo. Had to ram a fishing boat.

Reload, refit and called in-off to Rabaul harbour  to photo some carriers  .

Came in on a clear night with a half moon, radar showed a few likely DDs patrolling at 50,000+ yards. I was planning to sneak over the shallow water between the main N-S channel and the island to avoid the patrolling DDs. I had a quick scan on the binoculars before taking her down to PD when I saw a DD at 5000 yards! It was hiding next to a mountain and the radar man (and I) missed it.

An anxious ten minutes later I nailed it, alerting the nearby DDs and subchasers. Managed to nail another DD that flanked towards me just as I reached the deeper water to the SE of the main harbour. Went slow, deep and dropped decoys, which kept the attention of another DD and a sub chaser. Took her down to 160m to reload as I snuck closer to the objective icon. Came up for a look right at the edge of the shallow water and got some great pics of two Hiryu class AC with no escort, anchored broadside on to me. I put all six Mk14 torps into them (3 each) at 6000+ yds and waited.........."torpedo was a dud sir" x 6. :hmmm:

They still sat there, the destroyer and sub chaser kept circling but had now moved to site of the second DD sinking....put all four Mk14 rear torps into them (two each), crept over the edge into deep water, dived, waited......"torpedo impact" x4 "She's going down sir" x2:03:

Crept out the main north south channel, and spent the rest of the next four days dodging aircraft (seems they weren't happy about something) and DDs, only making it up for air now and then.

And the hero of the day? The Cheif PO in the rear torp room with the "decrease torpedo malfunction" ability

Just had a close encounter of the DD variety. I was bored of my patrol orders so foolishly I decided a raid on Rabul was in order. Got to within 30 miles of the place on the surface thanks to one of those tropical cyclones hanging around. Submerged and began my run in. Immediately picked up something patroling on hydrophones. Took a look with the external cam (Yeah I should turn it off but I like taking screens) and poked around in the RFB recog manual. ID'd it as a reconstructed cruiser similar to the Mogami. Noted the DC racks on the back but figured with the weather the way it was I'd be fine. Mistake number one.

So I slunk to within 1000 yards of the picket cruiser, following him on hydrophones I hear him increasing speed. He knew we were here, then I heard something that made my heart sink. The loud ping of an active sonar wave, accompanied by multiple splashes. Took a look on the external cam while ordering a full starboard turn at flank and a crash dive after a quick check of the depth left beneath the keel. Caught sight of two DCs going off, quickly pop back to the internal bridge and heard another 4 dcs blowing up nearby. No reports of damage (Thank god) as soon as I'm 90 degrees through my turn I throttle back and rig for silent running. Carefully listening for the dreaded pinging of his sonar. He didnt disappoint as he came round on another run. Waited until he was nearly on top of me, again flank and another hard starboard turn to make for the deeper waters. Slunk out of the area at 1 knot with the DD circling above us unable to get a fix thanks to the thermal layer returning fuzzy signals from his active.

During the escape I took another closer look at the ship with the recog manual and reid'd him as a DD. Terutski DD. That was a surprise and I'll have to shape up in future when making ID's with the external cam.

As soon as I noted the ship was moving off on hydrophones I decided to chance a surface run. Came straight up, ordered flank and vacated at the area at 20 knots. Didnt come off flank until I was 60 miles from Rabul. Made a quick check of any damaged systems and was surprised to note 13 hull damage had occured during the first wave of DCs. Luckily thats not enough to stop me maintaining 200 feet under water so any more surprises during my second patrol in the Cod I should be set for. Hopefully the hull doesnt implode if I take her down to 300. Its about the only depth I really feel safe dodging DCs at.

new campaign and first mission

Sunk a merchant -- game froze. I started over and sunk another merchant -game froze. I started over and had computer problems with SH4 and spent the day loading it and all the mods. The game still was giving me trouble so I deleted everything related to SH4 and started over, and only loaded RFB, RSRDC, patches, and my boat mod. Continuing my first mission for the third time - damaged a merchant - game froze. Started over - guess what, I finally finished the mission, and counting the two kills when the computer froze, my total was three kills. However, RFB is not displaying the slide ruler! Returned to Pearl and docked. When I hit midway on Patrol no. 2, I discovered I had no torpedoes. I tried to rearm at Midway and Pearl, but no luck. I restarted a mission no.1 that I had saved and tried docking again. I checked outside of Pearl and no torpedoes!!! I gave up. I will start mission no. 2 afresh another day. Sheesh. Time to kick the dog. (he is deserving because he peed on kitchen.floor.):stare:

Has anyone ever seen a torpedoed ship repair itself?

I torpedoed this Tanker off of ATTU. I hit the bow with my last fish in rough weather and it was down by the bow. I thought is was going to sink, but the weather calmed.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y128/ATCSMike/Clipboard01.jpg

And this is what she looks like after a couple of hours of me dodging escorts. The hole I blew in the bow is gone!

I've never encountered this before.

Hi,

All you have to do is find yourself a site to host the pictures you want to post. Personally I use Photobucket, but there are others;

http://photobucket.com/
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=free+image+hosting&meta=

You can create an account for free, all you need is an e-mail adress. Once you have an account, you can upload your pictures and then paste the link to a picture in a post.

Hope it helps and if you need any help, you know where to look. ;)

Its an easter egg. The flying dutchman, mentioned heavily elsewhere. Usuallly found between the Phillipipines and Formosa near the Luzon Channel. appears as "friendly blue" and have observed an IJN destroyer doing its nut, trying to sink it, very comical.

My weapons officer id this ship and he says "what this" when i asked for an id.

I thought of a ghost ship of some kind. You make me curious. What is the flying dutchmen?

I was nw of luzon strait, when my soundman picked up a fast moving warship. I was in a good position to intercept.

Pretty much as post above. A seafaring legend of a ship manned by ghosts, never to make port, always on the move. The Flying Dutchman in the film, is based upon this legend.

Playing TMO163RSRD 100%, no cams, no map contacts.

We head to Truk. Outside many radar contacts. Check radar, many ships. There were four to five possible dd's patrolling around. we sit still and track. The main body isn't moving, so I know it's docked. Sonar and Radar show dd's patrolling normally.

It's cloudy and will be dark soon. We take the north channel in on the surface. Sonar calls out nearest warship on the right, but we get by OK.

About midway through the channel we stop again. Turn radar on and make a sweep. Track another dd heading my way. Sonar gives me bearings. At 8000 yards we dive. He should pass to the right by 3000 yards. We go silent. I finally see him through my scope. He will pass...Sonarman grunts, "fast approaching". How could this be. Depth is about 200 ft. "Keep the scope up" I say. My exec looks doubtful.
"Hard starboard, set course to 195." Here he comes, 5 degrees port. Scope down, next look will be firing solution. Here he comes, 1100 yards, still 5 starboard. Set solution, scope down, fire at 700 yards. We let go a spread of 3, dive.....finally blam...we got him. In two minutes he sinks.

We go up to radar depth, sweep, set course. Things look good. Through the TBT, I see large mast..BB's. They will not lock on. Several patrols, but nothing near. We move forward. Radar goes nuts...game comes to a crawl...about 30 ships in all.

Old carrot eyes screams.."It's the entire nip fleet". We dive and move into postion.
First we will take out the Yamato. At 3000 yards we send 6...no duds, all set to run under. The monster grunts, but barely notices. We turn and line up on a Carrier. First we send four more at the Y from aft. All specifically targeted at points. All hit, he explodes, but doesn't sink.

Two carriers at our front now. "Two a piece, set 3 feet below keel" I urge them to load...faster boys. ...Time drags. I think about my wife sitting at home in the living room...well,..since I can actually see her..anyway, I pat the poster girls rear and send two at each carrier. It's late 43..the torps work. Two each hit...slowly they sink. The Y is almost gone. One more.....blam....another...that does it, her magizines explode..a jap leg falls and dangles on my scope. I could read his shoe.
He was a Jordan fan.

Three torps left and so many to choose from. Should I save them for the fight to get out of go for the Kongo. We give the Kongo three, making sure to put two in the first rear turret. That does it...he's a goner. We head south, take the east channel out.

Finally we surface. The reef is to the right...3 dd's patrolling the NE channel out.
We look and find a break in the reef. I pray we don't run aground, but we make it through.

We head back to base, refit and back to Truk...another large TF....repeat almost the same...340K tons sunk. However this time, a lone dd comes in at dawn and before I knew it, 3 more joined in. We escaped leaving a wasteland of nips behind.

Second war patrol USS Cod SS 224.

Left Brisbane and for the entirerity of the patrol only 1 target presented itself to us despite loitering in shipping channels for a good month. Had a good chase to try and intercept a Jap convoy headed for Peliu, got there in time but no joy. Returned to my pervious position and then headed south east to Truk.

Anyway the contact I made was coming out of Truk, and damn that place is a hornets nest. Came in on the surface and picked up a warship contact. Quick external cam check showed a Coastal cruiser, seperated from us by Truk's shallow sand bar I ignored him and worked my way in. Sat in the north mouth of the lane out of Truk for a day or so before I heard a DD closing and remembering my earlier experience at trying to harbor raid Rabul I moved off to the north and finally got my one and only contact for the patrol.

One medium merchant maru. Made firing position at 1500-1100 yards, almost 90 degrees dead on. Two fish fired, one missed off the bow, the second was a dud. Knowing that DDs could be on the scene in an hour tops I lined him up again. Another pair of fish. This time it was an acute contact with one fish, the second missed off his bow. And again, a dud. Getting sick of these dud Mark 14s, ah well. Pulled the plug on the patrol, and headed back for Brisbane. Got word my home port had changed on the way so I was saved the long journey back to Australia and made my new home in PNG. Here's hoping my next patrol actually lets me sink something. Its the only patrol I've been on where I haven't managed to at least sink one ship. Hopefully patrol 3 with new torps (its late 43) should produce some more tonnage for my ship.

USS BOWFIN, SS-287. December 1943, Celebes Sea.

Weather: clear & calm, day.

We picked up a SJ contact to 350, and track same. It turns out to be a small mixed convoy of med. sized composites and split merch's. escorted by 2 minesweepers. I lined up @ 90 deg. to convoy course at approx. 1500 yds. I fire a 4 shot salvo which disables our two primary targets and promptly dive to 280'.

The two minesweepers then initiate an expert search and BOWFIN is subjected to a competent depth charging. The third salvo heavily damages the engine compartment and we have serious damage to engine compt. bulkheads, severe flooding; pretty soon the entire compartment is flooded and we are sinking at this point. Master Chief O'Neill & the damage control party don Momsen gear and set to work in the compartment. Depth gauges go all the way to 450 and at one point our depth shows 574' with the boat at a 45 deg. angle. At this point I order a ballast blow and ascend to 240' and we try to pump out the compartment and repair the multiple damaged systems there.

Right about this time I begin to contemplate the probability of having to surface and fight it out with our friends upstairs, but instead opt for applying ahead standard and 20 deg. right rudder in an attempt to keep moving and force them to hit a spiralling, moving target. Apparently our friends assumed that I was still at a deep depth and the depth charging was considerably below us, which rocked us about quite a bit but no further damage was done. Master Chief O'Neill and co. finally manage to plug the leaks to the engine compt. and we can go back to silent run. One contact heard thereafter at about 140 deg. or thereabouts, and no further DC'ing. We spend the rest of the day sitting silently and wait for nightfall when we surface, repair the rest of the damage and pump the boat clear.

I order an immediate RTB with a patrol total of 27,600 grt sunk, six ships and Master Chief O'Neill will get the Silver Star.

More caution will be exercised with Minesweeper-type escorts in the future.

i spot it sitting at the edge of the harbor, looking ready to head out to sea at any moment, an ISE BB and to shorten the story 6 maybe 8 torpedos later it became my top kill (so far the campaign i'm in now is only up to feb 1943)

(Plunger went byebye after a corrupted save, so I had to start again :damn:)

December 8th 1941 - Lt Cmdr. Phillips selected for command of USS Sculpin (SS-191) a Sargo class submarine based in Manila, Phillipines.

December 12th 1941 -

0830 - After final checks of crew and equipment, SCULPIN cleared moorings and got underway at Ahead One Third speed. Course plotted for a point approx. 5nm from harbour entrance.

0920 - Opened sealed orders ordering SCULPIN to a point on the Eastern coast of Formosa, to transport 13 tons of war supplies to US troops stationed there. Proceeding on a course following the coastline of the Phillipines towards designated point at 5 knots.

1152 - Submerged to check all trim systems and sound equipment. Noticed slight whine in port propeller, but nothing that will impede our performance during this mission.

1412 - Emergency Dive, aircraft contact picked up on SD radar. Most likely a USAF scout, but used opportunity to test crew readiness. Dive time roughly 50 seconds - will need to work on that.

1800 - Weather becoming troublesome, winds in a NW direction and rainclouds approaching.

2050 - Rain becoming a constant bother for deck watch. Submerged for two hours to allow rest and the chance for the weather to clear.

2346 - Periscope depth. Extended SD Radar antenna just in case, but wave action proved this to be a useless gesture. Sweep with periscope reveals slightly alleviated weather, but heavy seas. Surfaced and resumed on previous course.

(More to come later)

Idealflaw If you like a game that requires though, skill and patients than you will like this sim, it's more than a game. Take a look at the Screen Shots thread to see the great graphics, takes a pretty good machine to run so look at the hardware thread to get an idea of what you need. Also get the Silent Hunter Gold edition. SH4 1.5.

Yes this is standard game play and missions are assigned to you.
You can play at any difficulty settings you like and move up at your own pace. There are lots of people here to answer any questions you have, this is a great forum with lots of help.

Wierd patrol. Had 3 torps left and here comes a lone Takeo CA. Going fast and about 3000 yards, but get one hit. He list bad but doesn't sink. I let him get 6000 yards ahead of me and put about 40 deckgun hits in him. He finally rolled over. Not sure if the deckgun got him or he just sunk. But he just rolled over and didn't sink, so I ran around taking a bunch of SS's. He just floated bottoms up for two days. I actually sank another ship with my deckgun why beside him...I left him belly up.

They are saved in the main game folder as BMPs, so you better convert them to a more managable one, JPG for example.

After that, you just upload them to one of the millions of picture sites and link them here.

Sailor Steve
04-05-09, 04:53 PM
They have to be saved via an outside server. My favorite is www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com). It's free, and while it is preferred to convert all photos to jpeg as that way they are much smaller files, Photobucket does that for you automatically, so you don't have to worry about it.

Once you get an account there they'll walk you through the process, which includes the ability to upload multiple files at the same time. Have fun with it!:sunny:

Okay,I finally found them after an exhaustive search. I'll post a few of my puny efforts tomorrow....

Lord Kelvin
04-06-09, 12:52 AM
First war patrol in USS Stingray, December 11 1941, Cavite.

Got my orders to patrol the Luzon Strait, so off I went. Along the way I ran into an enemy task force (presumably the one that's going to invade Borneo), report its position and go on my way. Sank a couple of merchants running along the coast of Luzon before I reach my patrol area and begin my search.

About the second day in, I spot a merchant with a few escorts. Go to my TBT, and lo and behold, Huge European Liner. So I call it in, and apparently it's full of reinforcing troops for a nearby garrison, and I'm given the green light to take it out. :DL

Problem was, it was already a bit ahead of me, and I couldn't attack it from behind, so I backed off a bit and pull an end-around, running full speed to intercept up ahead. Managed to get a nice firing solution, and fired a salvo of four; three hit the target near the bow, which then obliged me by taking a nosedive. The destroyers putter around for a while while I dive beneath the layer and waltz away. :haha:

Another day later, I pick up a convoy heading south and report it, and continue on my patrol. After a while, I got bored so I decided to investigate the archipelago off of Aparri, and wouldn't you know, I find a task force sitting there, literally in a wagon circle. So I call it in, and get orders to attack.

So, I make my approach, select a fat-looking cruiser, and pickle off four torpedoes. Two hit the mark, and it goes down almost instantly, by which time I'm already turning away. Then by some freak accident, one of my stray torpedoes manages to hit another cruiser on the far side of the wagon circle, holing it and causing it to list.

As I continued my retreat, I see that I still have four perfectly good stern torpedoes, so I thought, "why not" and pick another cruiser to shoot at, firing a spread of four. They all missed because the cruiser managed to evade, but by another freak accident, they kept going, barely missed a small passenger carrier behind it, and kept on going, and did this to a destroyer at the far end of the wagon circle:

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/6237/akazukisinking.jpg

:o

So, by this point, I have one torpedo each left in my bow and stern tubes, and decide to call it a day, and head home. Along the way, I see the task force that I attacked passing by north, the cruiser that I hit still listing noticeably. Maybe it sank on the way home? :hmmm:

As I get closer to base, I spot one more merchant, so I decided to attack. Lined it up and shot my last bow torpedo at it, which missed and alerted it, so I gave up and continued on my way. An hour later, I surface, only to find that the merchant is still nearby and is shooting at me! So I crash dive, and aim my last stern tube at it, which hits it by some freak miracle, so I decide to battle-surface and finish it off with my deck gun.

Patrol ended December 20. I was awarded the Medal of Honor for my little gun duel with the merchant, my two gunners and one of my torpedomen got decorations, and I got enough renown to fit a SD radar onto my boat for the next mission.

Summary: tossing big spreads of torpedoes at stationary task forces can result in some seriously nasty surprises. Can't wait to try this on a large convoy. :arrgh!:

i have this dude's problem...

On my end my computer has more power then asked. I have a very powerful computer and my rig pass all the test, to play SH4. All the video options are at 100%, and I hit 30 to 70 FPS, always. So why in the tutorial no one's speak to me, to show me, the ropes with the game?

If anyone have a clue well tell me, please.

For example when the first training starts, I do received writing messages and so on, but actually is there anyone suppose to speak to me like: Move ahead flank then submerged like we see with SH3 training lesson?

Thank you!

There is a manual on the SH4 disk, it's not much help but covers the basics.
About the only suggestion I can make is to go to one of tutorials and play around with all the various tools and commands to see what they all do.
There are no instructions given in the tutorials, they are just training missions.
You can find some help here:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=107783

also try this link
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/t...5/m/4351073726 (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6421019045/m/4351073726)

Also here:

It all seems complicated at first but you will soon get the hang of it, just stick with it. The Sim is well worth the effort.

I started a new campaign with TMO 1.7.

First mission, I left Manilla port heading north in order to drop off some supplies. As you all know, Manilla is under attack quite early in the game. With this in mind I figuered I might make it up north and back again before the port was lost...

Just about a 100 Nm from Manilla my watchmen spotted a taskforce. O MAN, IT WAS HUGE! I never seen that large taskforce before...
So I reported the contact and dived to periscope depth. I immedietly began lining up for the attack. The taskforce consisted of 3 heavy cruisers (cant remember the name though), about 7 escorts and about 10 frieghters...

When they were in range, I let loose of all my four torpedoes at the first heavy cruiser and then started a U-turn. I scored two hits wich was enough.

As the escorts didnīt know where I was, I unleashed my four stern torpedoes at the second heavy cruiser. This time all hitted.

By this time, the escorts had figuered out where I was and made me dive.
With them all (5 of them) above, I started another U-turn in order to disapear back into the convoy
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/Jonbeee/Silent%20Hunter%204/spearfish1.jpg

Sudddenly, I realized that the third, and last, heavy cruiser was within range so I waited untill all escorts were heading away from me, then I ordered "Ahead flank" and "persicope depth". I managed to get to the surface without them reaching me, fired off all bow torpedos wich had been reloading during the time.... "YES!" 3 out of 4 found there target wich ment that the last heavy cruiser was a gonner:rock:.

I dove below the thermal layer before ordering "Silent running" and started my route out of there...

After that day, I reloaded and refuled, completed 4 more tasks (all stay within 108 Nm for 4 days) and sank another 9 warships.
All in all, 33.000 tons of warships.

Btw, a question. For all this I got the silver star I think it was. What is the requerements for a gold star???
Coz that was one of my best runs yet. And bloody fun as well...

Question...I've noticed that some of you are able to get really close up SS's,and I can't seem to get closer than the above conning tower shot. Is ther a way to zoom in closer?

Hmuda
04-14-09, 04:53 PM
TMO allows to zoom as much as you want (no limit whatsoever, you can "noclip" through everything if you want to). I'm sure RFB works the same way as well.

( I reloaded this attack maybe 10 times and could not beat these two guys, they were on me every single pass. Nothing worked )

My 4th. patrol was more successful. Played out as above but didn’t find the Kiturn Maru but a Horai Maru with 2 escorts, which I sank and later I got a Buzyn medium tanker with the deck gun. I ran into the very some Kiturn Maru and this time I managed to sink it and get away with little damage. With only 2 torpedoes left headed home. Ran across a Conte Verdi huge transport but didn’t sink it with 2 fish. Though I had it dead in the water and was going to wait out the escorts but it was making about 2 Knots so I gave up and RTB. On the way I sank another Buzyn Maru with the deck gun for a total of 41,500 Tons all troop transports and tankers. Not too bad considering the poor start I got. These were my first patrols with 1.5 and TMO 163 at 90%

I was east of Tawi Tawi patrolling the small shipping lane beside Joli..what I consider the honey hole. Here comes the largest Convoy I've ever run into, about 50 ships. Never ran into one this large, it was the Java Invasion force. I went deep and came up in the center. It was early 42 and luckily I had a full load of M10.s. Not one dud and all the ships were loaded with cargo and ammo. Usually one torp did the trick. I just ran at flank speed in the middle, going deep to reload and the DD's never got close. Sank about 12.

Hi GulfXray.

I'm no expert on files and stuff like that. But we're running nearly the same mods and operating system. I suspect that they may be there even though you havent seen them.

Try going back to the games directory again, scroll down a bit below the jsgme icon, they wont be in their own folder but just there as bmp images, somewhere in the middle. Also, sometimes it can take a moment for them to appear, if your system is still trying to process them or whatever.

They should be there though bro.

Judging by his HUD he's using TMO 1.7. That mod (and every other major mod compilations) uses one of the environment mods that makes pretty much everything much much nicer over all.

CTRL-F11 is the default as far as I know, it cereanly works under TMO and it still places them into the default installation folde.

Although I heard that Vista will mess things up about placement, so you might want to look into that.
