I didn't get to see this actually happen. I had hit the destroyer in the rudder, which left the stern sitting on the bottom with the bow still a ways out of the water at about a 35 degree angle. The destroyer was still under power, but was only making about 3 knots. As you can see, it wasn't able to get out of way in time. Apparantly the merchant augered the destroyer straight into the sea bed, causing it to lock into a perfectly vertical position. 10 hours later it was still sitting there in the exact same position. I got credit for both killing a destroyer and putting a new landmark off of Aparri.

Nope, you only get credit for the one you hit...suks. Course many of the convoys are big in RSRD. If you can catch a convoy where the ships are loaded with oil, fuel or ammo...with the right timing you can sink a bunch.
The most I've sunk with one torp was 6, one ship exploded the next, just be sure plenty more are around you can get credit for.
Course I like timing escorts passing near and take them out with the explosion.

U-180 Sunk?
TO ALL CONVOY COMMANDERS:I think it's time to rejoice, for we have confirmed reports of the sinking of a U-boat Sunk off the coast to Sydney,Australia on June 21,1943.The U-boat is presumably U-180,captained by Char Aznable "The Red Comet".as you all know this man single handedly sunk 5 British Battleships in the Java Sea,while somehow evading the Destroyer Escort.
at 12:40,a V&W Class Destroyer was Patrolling near Sydney, when it seemed to Hit an underwater obstruction.Out of Reflex,it dropped Depth Charges on what it believed was a Submarine. There was an Explosion, followed by the surfacing of a U-boat.3 more V&W Destroyers were vectored to the area.
In what was the most unbelievable display of Gunnery, eyewitnesses say that this U-boat ENGAGED AND DESTROYED 2 of the 4 Destroyers. It was then rammed.after Rolling 90 Degrees to Port, the U-boat then opened up point blank and sunk a 3rd Destroyer. It then opened up on the final Destroyer, sending it to the bottom as well.
This Photo was taken by one of the men in the Lifeboat of the 3rd Destroyer.
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm47/Blazer0079/SH4Img2011-03-06_213018_372.jpg
at 12:55,the U-boat sunk below the waves. We should consider this a victory.IF this is the much famed Red Comet,The Indian Ocean and the West Coast of Australia will be free of one of the Greatest threat to shipping in the Pacific.
UPDATE
July 2,1943
Spotters on a remote island off the Coast of Rabul report seeing a German Submarine with what looks like holes from 5 inch shells in it's Starboard side limping into the Port.

FLASH: To TF3 From USS Perch (SS-176)
12/9/41 20:52 Grid 18'29N by 120'3E (North West Coast of Luzon)
At roughly 1400 I spotted a large convoy off my starboard bow. I submerged and closed at flank speed to determine firing solution. I determined the convoys course was roughly 168 at 9.5 knts. I turned tail at flank and bugged out to 8nms and surfaced. I then turned parallel and made flank speed to my intercept point. I reached the intercept point well ahead of the convoy (it is now dark) and went to PD and closed at 1/3 to close to the point of interception. By some stroke of luck or poor positioning on my part the escorts found me. I continued into the convoy and in frustration fired my forward tubes. Tube 1: at 0, Tube 2: at 1' to right, Tube 3: 2' right, tube 4: at 1' to left. I honestly did not expect anything but I had noticed there were ships in that area but they seemed to have stopped or slowed. To my surprise at about 2800 yds I hit a Nippon Tanker dead in the engine room with what looked like tube 2. Tube 1 bounced off the bow of a ship, and way out past my 3000 yd plotter I hit some sort of merchant with tube 3. Tube 4 was a miss. So in an act of optimism I turned slowly and went about reading my aft tubes, got into position and fired. Tube 5: at 180 was a miss. But tube 6: at 1' to right looked dead on the merchant I had hit with tube three.
By now I was hearing the pings of the escorts closing rapidly (all 10+ of them) so I dove to 250' and went 1/3 while I attempted to reload my tubes and get a few more shots. I performed a 90' maneuver to the right and heard a clang of a dud. Out of 5 torps (not counting tube 4 a miss or tube 1 as I hit the head of the bow) I had only one true dud!
Now I have to sneak away from the escorts so that I might get a few more torpedoes off while the convoy scoots around in disarray. I stayed at 250' making slow 5' turns to the left and right. But eventually the escorts started to get a bit to close for comfort so on the next attack run I went flank speed and rose to 200' while moving hard to starboard towards what looked like open water to the west. It appeared to have thrown them off as the DCs were not near as close. But the God forsaken pinging, I couldn't tell how many there were but it was almost constant! I began a series of depth and course changes hoping that I might shake them. But alas everytime I lost all but one ping, the others eventually caught on. I was in some serious trouble here.
My Number Two (Butch) had an idea. "Capt we have been heading steady on a Westerly course. What if we double back towards the convoy?" I scratched my head for a moment and then a DC came damn close to scratching it for me. Seeing as we had used up most of our options I slapped him on the back and said "that's just crazy enough to work Butch, make it so!"
We slowly came round to our course and made like a hole in the water. After a few minutes I could hear the escorts and DCs get further off. Butch grinned widely, "that shook 'em!" I was slow to optimism but couldn't help but grin, we just might have pulled this off.
But like my luck earlier on approach a stray ping seemed to have dead eyed our boat. I glared over at Butch who had beads of sweat dripping down his nose. "Who are the guys!?"
"I don't know but whoever they are they are damned good," and I ordered another 90 to a northern heading. The DCs again began rattling the small submerged cage we were in. My maneuver, I decided quickly, had apparently done nothing but help them. The men at thier stations looked like still red ghost, I was having trouble telling if any of them were still breathing. I noticed I had been holding my breath and let out a sigh.
After heading north for a bit I looked up at the clock "22:18" roughly 40 minutes since the escorts had detected us. I decided to hard to starboard to bearing 240 as my sonar man seemed to believe the escorts were all north and to the east of us. I took a listen and pat him on the back. Seemed like as good a call as any. After slowly coming round to 240 I ordered engines to make turns for 1 knt, and we began yet another anxious waiting game.
After a bit longer it finally seemed as if we had lost them, but I didn't dare speak up. I listens hard straining my ears to see if I could hear the enemy scowering the water above."I think we got 'em", Butch piped up. I glared at him," Yea well you just keep thinking, it's what you do best Butch." That remark drew a few snickers from the planesmen. But it did indeed seem like we had lost them. It had been a full 10 minutes since we had an escort deficate on us and I was feeling more optimistic by the minute.
10 minutes quickly faded to 20 and according to the NAV map we were a good 4500 yds from the convoys course. I was eager to get to PD to see what the convoy was up to. It was like an itch you can't scratch and it was eating away at mencrom the inside. After 25 minutes I gave the order. "Make the depth 55 ft." I wasn't even hearing DCs anymore.
We began our slow ascension to PD while Perch groaned out from the pressure change. I took a look at the batteries, 61%. We had been at 75 when we dove to start out attack. I stepped up the the periscope after the 3'minute climb and took a glance. At 218 the Nippon Tanker sat dead in the water. It appeared it's crew had kept it from reaching critical the stern deck was just barely out of the water. A few other ships were also setting still, and I was a bit perterbded by this. None the less if they were going to give me a few more easy shots, I'd send them a few thank yous. A ship around 240 was the closest so I went about ordering us to line up the aft tubes. But right before I fired I noticed an escorts bearing down on me.
I suppressed the urge to yell, and whispered,"take her down to 250'", still putting a sense of urgencing in my voice. Once again we were making the slow dive down, and I all but expected to hear pinging any moment now. I looked at the clock,"23:03". Jesus this is bad for your blood pressure. We reached our depth and began a slow series of turns, I allowed myself to day dream.
Before I realized an hour had flown. Since it had been so uneventfully I felt it were safe to give the order to PD. Our dead in the water friend now sat off 285 and a good 5nms out. The convoy seemed to slowly be getting it's act together but rather slowly. Alone escort sat still at 254 and I decided it best to wait him out. Batteries at 57% CO2 at 7%.
Finally at 00:35 it seemed to pick up steam and head towards the rest of the convoy. I decided to slowly make our way to our friend. I imagine they were taking the crew from the ship and heading out. Atleast we gave our guys a few more hours before this fleet made landfall. I eventually lost sight of him and gave the order to resume loading torpedoes. I looked around and could see the fatigue on the men's faces, so I recended my general quarters as well.
We slowly gained ground on our friend who seems to have made repairs to her engines and was putting along at what looked like 2kts or so. Unfortunately for us that seemed to encourage a few escorts to hang back and watch over it. Damn more than a few at least 6. (Why in the heck are they hanging around so long. Plus a sub tender or something just sitting there. The escorts seem to engage engines for about a second and stop. Are they bugged out?) And once again our luck is not on our side and an escort begins pinging away at us.(you have got to be kidding) Again we dive to 250'. We lose them quickly and I decide to stay under until 03:00.
(even waiting 3 hours did not help this problem, the second I reach PD I am getting pinged again. Going to stay under another 3 hrs.) At 06:00 I decide to go to PD, hopefully our friend isn't long gone.
Well damn even after now a total of 6 hrs there is still one escort just sitting there to make matters worse it appears the convoy hasn't hardly moved beyond my visual range. I was having a blast typing this on my iPhone while I played up till this point. But something obviously has broken, I wouldn't even post this had I not actually played and typed this over a course of 2 hours RL. The bugged escort appears to be a subchaser, that is in fact the understatement of the entire damn millennium. Now I'm just staying to document this it is now 07:00 and all it's doing is circling. It is now 09:00 and it has managed to circle away to 5nms. No sign of the ship a torpedo, any of them. At 10:30 I can no longer pick it up via my sonarman and am going to surface. Nope it is still there just over the horizon. Is this some new feature a mod adds? Really there is no way this is behaving as it should. The hell with it I'm just going to engage it with my deck gun. This is insane. Hmmmm sank it but it never even fired on me. Must have been bugged out. Gee that sucked, guess I'll start another new career and avoid this convoy like the plague.
Anyone ever have this happen or TL;DR?

It's been a long time since Ive been to sea in a full fledged fleet boat,
one can usually find me slinking about in the S-47 around Alaska or Java making a nuisance of myself and having a jolly time of it.
On a whelm i decided to take on a new construction and see her through into harms way.
Several weeks and almost quits later there we were in imperial waters riding in Ol' Trigger.
Shes pretty sexy for one of those new fangled fleet boat contraptions LOL :haha:

I was thinking to myself, "wow, 13 ships, thats unrealistic, i failed at something here."
Then i realized that:
a.) People complain the AI is too hard
b.) I've heard some complaints about the 40's being too weak..

hehe, before that I took out 3 Yamato's and a Hiyo carrier. I docked on Oct.1 to get a full load of M16's and flanked to the battle of Leyte where I sunk both. I then went to Brunei to wait for the Y to leave historically for Kure and sunk it. Several large convoys came by, but got this one in a storm, so attacked. So no refits and sunk over 250K tons in one patrol, think that's my best score with no refits.
The goal was to sink 4 Y's in one patrol, meaning every M16 had to count, but I had 2 misses. I had 4 M16's left, but didn't think that would sink another Y, plus I someone missed the last RSRD Yamato for that time, the next foray it would've come out would've been April of 45, so took out a carrier instead.
You want big action, sit about 25nms outside of Brunei in Nov of 44. I saw several nice TF and about dozen large convoys why waiting for the Yamato.

I'm not even sure the game has Buffalos as they were hardly used after Midway. The Buffalos front doesn't narrow like the Wildcat, but they do look somewhat alike. Both the Wildcat and Buffalo had the rear metal canopy to glass conversion, so you could find that on both depending on type.
This is a Wildcat..
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/Armistead1424/f4f_profile_tn.jpg
Edit....Upon further review looking at other SS's they do look more like Brewsters as they don't have the tapered nose, can't really see it in the SS here so I just said Wildcats since I took that SS in 44. In the ME, nothing for a Buffalo, but a generic fighter and I'm pretty sure that's it in the SS. The ME doe's contain a Wildcat fighter bomber with the tapered nose, those in my SS don't have it....so you might be right. Course it's a game and the game uses this possible Buffafo through the war, which would be wrong.
Either way, you're more right than wrong, so I'll stand corrected on the tapered nose itself.

I agree, the Wildcat has a tapered nose. Just the game uses the Brews through the war which is wrong, they weren't used on carriers after 42.
I didn't realize the Brewsters were in service long enough to go from the yellow tail to the red and white, but they probably did.
If I recall, they weren't even used on carriers at Midway, seems the army flew them at Midway. I believe Wildcats were carrier planes then because Thach flew one, but I'm weak on planes...:salute:
I guess it was the Hellcat that took over after the Wildcat... I've flown in several warbirds at airshows, the Hellcat was awesome.
Love to fly in a P51, but $300 for a 15 minute flight in a Hellcat was enough, P51 rigged for an extra was $2000 for 30 minutes last airshow....and it flew non stop all day, that's a hell of a business.
Hylander_1314

The yellow tail, fuselage band and cowling were pre-war carrier colors. The landing gear on the Brewster was too weak for carrier ops, so they were goven to the Marines as usual. If the Navy can't or won't use them, give 'em to the Marines. The upper wing surfaces were bright glossy chrome yellow for hi viz reasons over open ocean, or in case of a forced landing in the water. Your squad mates could fly cover until a seaplane got there (hopefully).
January 5, 1942
National Aircraft Insignia were returned to both right and left, upper and lower wing surfaces. Rudder markings were changed to 13 Red and White horizontal stripes.
May 15, 1942
The red disc in the center of the National Aircraft Insignia and horizontal red and white rudder striping were eliminated.
Here's a cool little link explaining the bright pre-war colors for the different carriers, and squadrons on the carriers. http://www.cybermodeler.com/color/usn_preww2.shtml
Stealhead
04-18-11, 07:43 PM
Another very huge difference the Buffalos have rounded surfaces and the F4F has much more squared surfaces and is much less "stubby" looking.Sadly generally speaking the Buffalo was pretty much a complete failure as a fighter.Seems like Brewester had bad luck designing war planes they made a few other naval single engine aircraft that where all generally mediocre.
You know the Finns flew some Brewesters in WWII and they did not perform so badly in their hands as they did the US the Dutch also flew them in some in their colonies but with pretty bad results the Buffalo was pretty much bait for the Zero.
As Hylander says above the Navy did not like them much so I assume the ones that other nations flew where ones that the Marines did not get or Brewsters attempt to sell their desgin to a different customer as a land based fighter.
The Brewster Buffalo the kid that always gets picked last during school team sports at it tries.

On patrol off Okinawa I let this G4M know exactly what I think of it, by unleashing a massive barrage of artillery.
http://oi55.tinypic.com/308wkew.jpg
Seconds later the aircraft's left wing impacted the conning tower, causing flooding, almost total destruction of all conning tower machinery, and plenty of wounds.
Currently I am proceeding to the nearest port. If I don't - it doesn't look good.
Seeing as the nearest port was well over 1200 miles away - I really wish you could request a new objective.

Just recived command of U-43 at the start of the war. First orders were to patrol off the coast of spain about 150 miles. I do a trim dive/sound check every evening around 1700, I got a convy on a bearing of 345. Surfaced and went max speed towards the convoy. I never found the convoy, but I did run into a loan tanker that was a straggler from the convoy. Put 2 torpedos into her, then finished her off with the deck gun. 10,000 ton, not bad for the first kill of the war for U-43.
Completed my patrol with no other traffic noted except a lone ship flying an american flag, so I dived and let her pass as not to be sighted. 2 days later I arrived at the entrance to gibralter and started patroling.
Convoy sighted on a bearing of 285. Turned to the north to intercept and get into position. 15 m/s winds and slight fog, I opt for a surface attack. Fired on 2 ships, one torpedo each, two hits. At the time of the second explosion, Look out yealls out warship spotted. At first I thought it was a destroyer, but apon closer inspection it was way bigger. Turned out to be a Queen Elizabeth Battleship. What was a battleship doing running with this convoy, and she was all alone. Anyways, I instantly turn to set myself up for firing position. Fired 3 torpedos at her, all three hit. That slowed her down alot, I circled around and put two more in her, and that seals her fait. I still have a few torpedos left, and I spot two more tankers from the convoy, and send them to the bottom. A destroyer pops up out of no where, and I yell alarm and get the boat down to 120 meters and silent running. The convoy leaves and I surface to recharge and begin the long journey home. End of first patrol accounted for 4 Tankers 4 freighters and a Battleship for 90,000 tons.
I dont run any other mods except OM and the enviroment up grade for OM. I also have the Das Boot Sound Mod. Hope you enjoyed the story.

So here we are,
After a fine maiden patrol to the East China Sea, a few charges that rumbled and not even shook our boat, and a persistence to get BuOrd to supply out boat with SJ. Not even closer.
Now we ship out from Surabaya, Java, and the seas are unusually calm. Well, its just so before the storm. So a few days have passed since we were located to the Java strait, and SO reports a faint whoosh some 30 miles Northwest, closing. A distinctive, unprecedented whoosh is amongst the sounds and we think to our selves, it could be a cruiser complement.
Flank speed and intercepting we come across what is best termed as the ticket to a better boat. A Taskforce is in sight, and my OOD and HM both deligintly working hard to get us clear of the oncoming escort port the plotted track. We are 5 kilometers apart from two eye-candy, Takao and Mogami cruisers, but only had time for the latter. We decided to call an angle of 93 port on bearing 0 relative and 14.4 knots on the speed.
"Standby for constant bearings!" on 1MC on my order.
"Range - mark!" , "Bearing - mark!"
We had her by the boilers and 4 minutes, 43 seconds late, came 4 loud rumblings, we were in shallow waters, when suddenly, a destroyer came to and started pinging..
Well, we heard her own screws on top of our heads, and my exec recommended a change of course to the North. We launched our decoy and bought a few minutes off and decided to secure our sound heads, moving at ahead slow to minimize whoosh specially in these shallow waters, at least to make it to a nearby puddle of 10 meters deep. I had the con, and it was time to surface after six hours of distant rumblings, four hydrophone sweeps, and a lot of burden from the seabed underneath.
We came up, exactly 34 kilometers from the approach and decided to not stick around anymore, for a Betty or a Zeke, would certainly scan this area after our near brush with death.
And so we moved across the Java strait, and onto the depths of Sulu sea, we arrived.
It was morning on April 8th, when our Radioman came to the mess hall as we were busy on our bacon and eggs and handed a report from ComSubPac, an Ultra designating a lost cruiser to the Japs at the Java strait area. We decided to hold off communications until we could foresee what will happen at Sulu sea, which was of friendly depths, and so as we crossed the 100 fathom curve, we were on comms with ComSubPac when we got a message over Fox traffic about a convoy southwest of our position, with course estimated Northeast. We went on a 2-engine speed, and our sound head were deployed. For we were eager to get more ships in this area.

So, after three fruitful patrols, the last of which ended in sinking a Fuso b/s.
So, upon our return to Pearl, I've been given command of a new boat, USS Drum, a Gato-class submarine. Not only that, but it was June 1st when I had orders to not leave port as an SJ radar was being fitted to the sub. It was a new experience, but certainly, now that we have better detection range, close to 35 kilometers, and the mighty PPI, we had the convoys of Japan under our heels. The boys from Pickerel, my first boat, came by to see me through my new boat, and I was frustrated that my execs wouldnt be with me on my 5th patrol in the war since 41 and the Pearl atrocities. It was a shame since I got to renown with the help of those men.
So, after a warm farewell and Godspeed, we fired up the diesels and went to shakedown for a week on our new boat.
My new execs being Fred, and John. Both were experts on command and I expected no less than Fred in particular, since he had experiences with the faulty Mk14s and him being on the boat, would certainly lower the duds we've apparently encountered from our previous patrols to China sea, Philippine sea, and Sulu sea, as well as off the coast of Honshu and Kyushu.
My orders were simple:
"Check the torpedoes depth keeper, impact pin, and horizontal rudder. We'd use contact detonator and a depth of 4 meters for all our fish. Keep SJ and SD manned at all times, and call me to the bridge if a contact is established, and if in doubt, dive first, then call me to the bridge."
We set sail to Carolines this time, even though ComSubPac directive was Kyushu, but I figured since we had plenty of fuel on our reserve tanks, we moved at ahead slow, doing a change of 12, and 11 knots, while Patrick, my Helm, kept the boat at zero angle on a keel depth of 6 meters.
I was intrigued by the new ship, and in comparison to the Pickerel we had an excess of 8 torpedoes to ensure we'd sink more Jap commerce and probably end the war.
Japanese convoys were now using more escorts, and the ratio of escorts increased. Probably our boys did one hell of a job in driving the Empire's navy into exponentiation.

The first one sinks after two torpedos and i went to surface and sinks the other one with the cannon.

Now have command of USS Balao, a Balao-class submarine.
It was time to put her to test when command advised the necessary shift of base to Brisbane, Aussie.
I was disappointed that Drum, the old Gato, and the most work had to go to someone else. I had hoped he'd keep her in one piece.
So, Brisbane it was, sailing on a clear day, to assigned AO East China Sea, and a 4000 + km log to be penned.
I set course to Rabaul channel, and as we were on our way in, sonar picks up two slow screws. A medium sized old freighter, and a composite sister show up on the scope in minutes. We precautionarily dived as was the case in morning attacks, which I personally didnot favour, but since both ships had to be sent down, without interfering with our schedule of reaching the AO, I figured we'd spare the eels or at least let the S1Cs get some.
Using three torpedoes, none of which scored a scratch, and, out of anger, ordered a surface and battlestations deck gun manned. The seas were friendly, but the enemy wouldnt.
Few minutes of shelling and getting back a reciprocal of splashes, none, thankfully, hitting our ship, both ships went down.
So, I now order secure and set course to pass the straight in half-length by day submerged, surfaced the night, so we'd be out by next day dawn into the welcoming depths of Bismarck sea, through which, we'd head northeast, to assigned AO.
Hours passed like minutes, and a contact came over radio, apparently, a slow, 7 kt convoy heading course estimate 283 true, is effectively cruising the Bismarck strait. We decide to intercept as we would be in a favourable position if we maintain our 18 kts speed in the turbulent, now-upset weather. 15 kms direction 301 (due north) caused a delay which we had to forget about giving John, our EM, the auxiliary for his charge.

Actually a mod, combo of others work and myself.
I don't use the mission editor for RSRD, doesn't work right. If you want to add ships and traffic you need to use the same program lurker used SH4batch and edit with notepad. I do have mine in a mod format and asked lurker if it would be OK to release it for RSRD long ago, but he ain't around, so haven't done so. Others complained saying since I changed RSRD itself, not to publish it, but I'm about done making a seperate mod over RSRD.
I added many extra ships and other historical traffic, some japanese, a lot allied. Most ships I added were by Madmax. I did add his large DD pack that reworks most DD's jp and US, but still playing with his radar and sensor set up on them.
The plane picture wasn't Pearl, I think I took that one at Guam or Manus, where the Old BB's dock before heading to Leyte., but who would know the difference.
I do need to cut back on allied traffic, I added too much. I find I want to just get back to base not keep running into convoys that stops my TC.
I do have all my DD's and Escorts set to vet and elite and much harder settings, many sub killer groups, very hard to play, but if interested I may release it and if someone complains I could pull it, I don't think lurker cares anyway. I'm almost done, just got to set renown for some added ships.

A few youtubes, A couple spectacular explosions.
http://www.youtube.com/whizard72
It was a early sunny morning, me and my battleship Iowa was heading towards a patrol area about 50km from Honshu island when i intercepted a backup call from Midway, our current position was 10km outside midway, as i put my engines on flank speed towards the possible area of attack, i encounter lots and lots of enemy airplanes, with my cunningness i manage to calculate where they were coming from, and headed for intercept course to the enemy carriers
after about 10 hours of searching i sighted an enemy task force, as i quickly approach them and radiod in to Midway. 4 enemy Destroyers put and intercept course on me and in a matter of minutes they were all on the bottom of the sea
during this time i recived a message from HQ to RTB, sended a message back saying impossible already commenced Naval Bombarment on the Battleship Kongo, using superior range the kongo was down before he could even open fire, all remaining was 2 Destroyers, 4 Heavy Cruisers, 4 Light Cruisers and 3 Shokaku carriers, the Carriers launched bombers and fighters, while the rest of theyr fleet was moving towards me, i quickly began to sink theyr Heavy cruisers, and moved for theyr Light Cruisers, and then i sighted something in the horizon, i was thinking it was more jap bombers, but when they came closer i saw the markings of the United States Air Force, seeing how the airforce wants the glory of sinking the enemy carriers, i quickly changed target from Destroyers to the Carriers sinking all 3 of them in 10minutes
all remaining was the 2 destroyers that was fleeing the battlefield, but it was all invain, they joined theyr friends in the bottom of the sea. THE END'
and this is the story of how a single Iowa Class Battleship defended midway from certain doom, some of you might be thinking "using the iowa is nothing with that bs armor the creators put on it" well, i lowered that bs armor points to 56(not the realistic armor point but i didnt wanna take a chance getting sunk with all thoose Heavy cruisers and bombers coming towards me), during the battle i took a hull breach, my hull damage was at 46% when the battle was over
and if a G4M Betty would have done a succesfull run on me i would sink faster then a 50ton rock but my AA guns were good enough to take them down before they could hit me, and thoose bombs that they did drop were about 100 meters away from me, they japs cant even hit the side of a barnyard the way theyr flying, all this was done in 30 IG minutes
and about 10 IG minutes later one shi*t load of american planes comes rolling in, but to theyr suprise they only see a single Iowa Battleship with smoke and rubble all around it, heading towards Aleutian island too deny the japs a victory there as well

Life of Wern, Chap. 1
It was a long way back to New York. Due to some failures on the part of the crew I was to take back a pigboat to New York to train others in things that could go wrong. We pulled into a full moon over the lady...strange things usually happen when we pull into a full moon port.
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/Armistead1424/SH4Img2011-04-01_005441_187.jpg
My XO Wern had been gone for a few days.
"Where's Wern" I asked..
"Capt., he's out at Maggie's house of carnal lights." said Tambor laughing.
Good ole Maggie, what a wonderful woman. You could get 3 girls and breakfast in the morning for $50.00. if you used the secret knock..5 then 3. I figured I would go find Wern. Possibly someone told him the wrong knock.
Well, Wern was riled, but after two months at sea, I expected the crew to have a lil fun. Normally Wern wouldn't pull this crap. Wern was from an old biblical sect that believed in polygamy and having concubines, so when tipsy, the more girls the better. He had some doctrinal reasoning why it was OK, but I didn't care, this is the navy, girls are for fun.
He often complained of a bad back at sea, so in port he was easy prey for a snake oil salesman's cure all hooch-juice and didn't take much to get Wern drunk. Once drunk, his mental facilities dulled, someone like Wern didn't belong at a place like Maggie's, but his mind was set, his loins afire, he was on his way.
Wern walked through the alley in the dark of night hearing the light moans coming from the trucks on the side street.
"Cheap sinning SOB's, he thought to himself, "won't even pay for a bed", what's wrong with peoples morals these days."
He rang the bell at Maggie's and gave the 3-3-1 secret knock that our C.O.B. Tambor had told him. Maggie opened the door.
"Can I help you sailor."
"Er, well, I need a bed and some company" said Wern why blushing.
"Well, all my girls are busy tonight, come back tomorrow." replied Maggie.
Wern got pushy.."I've been out to sea for two months, please Maggie"
After long debate, Maggie explained to Wern the girls were busy. She saw Wern was riled and drunk. Old Salts know Maggie's a businesswoman, always ready to make a buck off those less wiser souls. She explained to Wern that she had no girls available, but if he had an open mind, she could promise him pleasures only known in Singapore.
"Come in and buy some drinks why I explain it to you" said Maggie.
Even Maggie's water downed booze was too much for Wern. Maggie got several drinks into Wern
why she explained to him the deal.
"Look Dear, you have an open mind and I promise you pleasure, only $50. Now go upstairs, second room on the right, in there will be a chicken on a table. Just grab it by the wings and do your thing. When it starts flapping it's wings, it will be the best experience you've had."
When you're drunk and Maggie is holding your hand, it's hard to say no. Old Wern stone drunk
now said
" I'll do it."
Upstairs he went. He grabbed that chicken. You have to know Wern on the sub, when he puts his mind to a job, he puts his all into it. Let's just say the story goes, Wern put his all into this job.. Wern moaned why the chicken clucked,
around the room doing the deed on floors, table, etc...When he was done, he had killed the chicken. He walked downstairs with the dead chicken and showed Maggie.
"Sorry, I killed your chicken" said Wern.
"No charge for the chicken." replied Maggie.
Wern made it to the cheap motel and fell dead asleep as the sun came up. He woke up, feeling a lil ashamed about the chicken he saw laying next to him. He had to have a few drinks.
Wern got riled again and decided he would go back to Maggie's for a girl tonight. When he arrived, there was a line at the door. Finally he rang the bell and gave the knock and Maggie opened the door..
"It's me again." said Wern.....
"Me who." said Maggie
"Me, from last night, you know.." Wern made a lil cluck sound to remind her
.
"Oh, is that you, I'm sorry, the lights not good, come on in and buy me some drinks.."
Wern had drinks with Maggie and explained his need for a girl..
"Sorry Wern, the girls are all busy again, but didn't you have a good time last night."
"Well, yes I did, actually a real good time." said Wern why looking shyly at the floor.
"That's my boy." said Mag..."I love men with open minds."
Wern was set on a woman for tonight, but again Maggie explained all the girls were busy.
She again told Wern that even better pleasures were in store tonight if he had an open mind,
that he could see things only a few ever see, only $50...
"I'll do it" says Wern.
"OK Dear, follow me" Maggie takes him upstairs. She opens the door.
Several benches were lined up with men of all types. Maggie sat Wern down. She stood up in front of a curtain and explained to the men.
"Behind this curtain is a see through mirror. When the curtain opens, you can see through it,
but those in the other room can't see you. The show tonight...two beautiful lesbians.
Now, watch the show and enjoy, they can't see you. No one knows what goes on in here, feel free to be openminded here, get excited, twaddle with or amongst yourselves...enjoy"
Well, Mag turned the lights down and left, the curtain opened. One woman was waiting and another walked in. A lil timid at first, they finally got it on. The crowd cheered and loved it. Wern had to admit he was getting excited.
He could hear funny sounds coming from the people in the dark room around him. He knew what he was supposed to do, so he watched, not believing what he was seeing.
Old Wern, finally into the show and enjoying himself nudged the fellow next to him..
"Hey fellah, this is a pretty good show isn't it..."
The fellow replied....
"You think this show is good, you should've been here last night and watched that guy screw that chicken..."

THE LIFE OF WERNHER, CHAP 2.
I finally found Wern at Dirty Joe's Motel and Grill. Wern opened the door. He was right pale.
"You alright Wern, you got a chicken feather stuck to your lip."
Wern brushed it off....." long nights Capt. Maggie can teach you things there that my high school biology teacher didn't know was anatomically possible."
I restricted Wern from Maggie's. Some of those girls are old pro's and could look at your ships identification shoulder tab and tell you the names of your COB's back to WWI.
Wern spent most of his nights back home never figuring out the precise steps for removing a Playtex Living Girdle, I thought the girls at Maggie's too much for him. Wern's only direction in life before the navy was trying
to find a place to sleep out of the rain.
Most don't know Wern is the son of a Rear Admiral, one of those desk jockey types back in Washington. I had been forced to take Wern on boat and make a man of him, make his father look good.
He had been promoted and moved from boat to boat, somehow now my XO. I asked Wern why he joined the navy. He said some girl in high school said he would look "cute in a sailor suit".
"I hope she laid you on prom night" says I.
"Oh, no captain, I stayed home that night studying the dictionary." says Wern.
Back to our barracks, a dung hole of a freighter, I waited for the call to get my arse chewed out by some Rear Admiral. I'm in trouble now. So many great patrols and to have a new sub ruined and sent state side ain't a place for a sub skipper. Oh well, great day for chipping hammers and paint scrapers.
I reflect back to our last patrol. Was is the vodka breathe whores in wool bloomers the crew got mixed up with in Darwin before patrol.
Some unknown STD that effects not only comprehension, but simple common sense or could one dumb XO ruin us all. Still, if I told the truth about Wern, made his father look bad,it would be worse.
Reflecting back, the problems all started with Wern on watch. I remember Tambor telling me Wern was topside on watch with Wolfez.
"You dumb sonofva*****" I yelled, I don't care if he is the XO, watch him, Only one thing worse than an idiot on watch is idiots... "Paired up"
Our Navigator said it would be OK, that we were still 500nm's from any possible enemy plane contacts.
I went topside anyway.
Worried about bombing runs by made by "DAFP'S" (dumb *** friendly pilots}, Wern held the signal light. Lookout called "plane", it was friendly. Wern flashed the signal. The plane turned into us seemingly to make a run... "Crash Dive" I yelled. We didn't get under, BAM,BAM....A new Balao damned near ruined.
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/Armistead1424/SH4Img2011-04-05_214048_515.jpg
The US pilot that bombed us later stated that the flash signal Wern gave was incorrect, instead of our sub number and code, the message read
"U.S. pilot, your mom mates with circus monkeys."
Getting under, I noticed water rushing in.
Are we holed or what I don't know. I asked
Tambor did he shut the main induction, he replied with a firm "yes." Wern then stated
he shut it when he came down last from topside.
Crap..."Wern, you opened it after Tambor shut it."
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/Armistead1424/SH4Img2011-04-02_021207_104.jpg
The boat damn near sunk, we work. I chewed Wern out and gave him a toolbox and told him to fix all the leaks coming from the head in the varmint pit {aft battery} and to clean up the crap on the floor why at it.
We finally got the sub under control and headed back to port for repairs .
I awake for my shift and took a sip of coffee."sonofva*****, taste like shiat.."
Upon further inspection, the reason it tasted like shiat was because it was full of shiat. After damn near flooding the ship Wern had replaced the wrong valve directing the refuse for the head through the coffee percolator valve.I ended up with a bacterial blood infection and suffered digestive rejection from both ends. The Doc put half the crew in the bunk. I couldn't function. By navy rules, I gave the boat over to Wern. He was book smart, a busy body, certainly he could plot? I told him to plot course for base as I ran to the head. We were only a few hundred miles
from base, certainly nothing worse could happen.
Sitting on the head half asleep, crapping more liquid than solid, when "WHAM". I was thrown off the head into the floor as refuse spilled all over me. I first thought we had hit another ship. Wern opened the head door knocking my front teeth out and screamed "we had run aground."
"an unmarked reef in the shallows?" I asked.
as I wiped my own waste and blood from my face...
"No", says Wern, "we hit an island right in the middle of the damn ocean."
Someone backed emergency just in time not to be stranded on this remote place eating monkey jerky until someone found us.
"WTF", I yelled at those watching Wern for me. "How did you let him run us into an island"
The lookout reported the island and Wern said "hold course", that we would miss it.
"We don't ask questions sir, we follow orders..." .
We limped into port. No one was there to meet us. I had expected a chewing out at the dock. We simply had a note stating.
"Do not come on land, switch to this POS pigboat and get back to New York Harbor via the south pole shipping lane.
Signed.
Get of my F'in Island today."
So here we are finally back. I was sent to the higher ups. I could hear an Admiral chewing out some poor skipper before me. My turn.
Let's just say as I lay here reflecting in my pigboat bunk as rookie Navy Pilots drop PDC's {practice depth charges} on us in shallow water, I hate this navy, nothing could make me hate it worse, nothing.
The cook brings me my morning paper. I couldn't believe the headlines.
"Admiral son receives "Medal of Honor" for saving ship why it's captain sleeps."
Front page, a picture of Wern shaking hands with the President himself..
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/Armistead1424/96-201-04.jpg
and sent to New Construction for a new sub,
"sonofva*****"
Bam Bam Bam.....Damn PDC's..

I was off the coast of Borneo over on the east side. I know there is some traffic through there. There is a spot not to far north of Balikpapan there has a shallow draft with a few deep holes here and there. I was sent to patrol not to far from there and got bored so I cruised over to the shallow areas. Sometimes I just like to watch traffic on radar to see the paths the average traffic is taking.
I set over a hold about 300 feet deep on the surface. This way I can go deep if anything bad should happen. I sat and watched the radar traffic on a few single ships, noticed their average course and got to that area to be ready to fight if something good came along. I like to wait for capital ships ... I love sinking carriers and battleships when I can. A convoy came through consisting of three destroyers and seven merchants two of which were large tankers and two passenger liners.
Well I love nothing more than sinking troop carriers ... something about screaming bodies in the water that just make my day. I took out to set myself so as they approached I would be ready about 600 yards off their track ... I like it close. I took out the troop transports first then the tankers. It was a miserable day and visibility was down to my eyelashes. I watched the radar and saw the destroyers heading my way and lined my set about 900 yards from where I estimated they would circle. They get predictable ...
I took the first two out fairly easy but the third one gave me a run for my money. I chased him ... they hate that and he chased me finally getting a stern tube at 450 yards. I like them to get close because I noticed at 450 yards they do not have enough time to maneuver away from the fish. Doing it this way I normally do not have the fish set on contact just in case its a bit off.
I sail off take out the remainder of the ship still near by with my deck gun and the 40 mike mike ... now I decided this might not be a bad place for an ambush. I park myself next to a wreck dropping down to 78 feet when planes came around other wise I just waited for more shipping hoping to use the wrecks as obstacles since they were all in the path of the channel of traffic they were using.
I waited for some time and got nothing ... a few days actually then I saw a ship not to far south west and went after it ... sunk it with the gun and noticed something really strange on the map. All the wrecks .... now had icons for ships. Not only that but some of them were moving. I went after a destroyer and we went at each other head to head ... he died. There was no wreck on the map nor was I given credit for a kill. I tried a merchant same thing.
It seems that the ships after a few days came back to life and while they could be sunk there was no credit given for killing them again. It was like killing ghost. I on the other hand received plenty of damage for my futile effort.
Has anyone ever noticed shipping coming back to life? I guess most kill and leave but I like to experiment once in a while. Did me hanging around cause them to respawn after I was out of range?? This was a career mission. I tried it with a single mission and the same thing happened. Have any of you other skippers experienced this before?

Great, except Tambor doesn't do it anymore, it's done by Cel and Wolferz, they take turns. Tambor did a great job and I think wrote the rules then and is probably listed as a Mod there. Long story short. The forum was one a thriving place, but slowly died out compared to here, although most here are members there. At the games beginning, it was the sub forum. It was still thriving when Tambor was the mod there. He really put an effort into the job, paid for prizes for the SS contest, etc..When he quit it died for awhile, but has picked up.
Being Ubisofts forum, about the time Tambor gave up being a mod, Ubi screwed up the site placing gaming ads, we now have M. Jacksons game ad on our forum, with protest of course. So many came here. This is a better run sight, most moderators here aren't owned by Ubi.
What's that have to do with your question, when Tambor ran it we had both unedit and edit, when he left the edit died out so we just went with non edit. However, if some interest showed I'm sure we could get it back.
The other issue is those that were good at edited shots like Gunfighter moved on to SH5.
Still, Tambor has come back, but not as a mod and we have a good group there, more of a forum family.
If you want edited back I'm sure we could push it and see if it woud grab back on.
Oh, I'm MWolfe over there...

My guess is your video card is overheating, could be dust, fan going bad or the card itself, I would check it out.

Yep. I suppose it's technically true... while that song is in the public domain, any particular recording is under somebody else's copyright.
It's cool, though. Gave me a good reason to get more familiar with some audio editing software so I can do a better job next time. I reuploaded the video, this time with selections from the game's music.

I capture the initial video with MSI Afterburner beta, which is free and works better than Fraps for most things, IMO. Back when I was putting together my first gameplay movies I looked at a lot of different free video editing programs... never did find a good one. So I gritted my teeth and parted with some cash for the AVS4YOU (http://www.avs4you.com/index.aspx) software package. It's kind of pricey, but an okay deal.

That fishing boat has spawned inside the land

But the biggest suprise was the thing that happened when I was leaving Surabaya for my next patrol:

Hi Flaxpants, Glad you like my pic. Feel free to have it as a desktop, in fact I have a 1280x1024 version which will be much less blocky if you want. In response to you mod question, yes I am running the Trigger Maru mega mod which includes a complete environment overhaul. My mod soup is as follows:-

RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1

Captain Midnights CBS NEWS Sound Mod

I also use 16x Anisotropic filtering and 16xQ AA although the environment enhancements in TMO are responsible for the look I think.

USS Detroit (CL-8)
Starting base: Manila
I was eating dinner in the officers' mess with the rest of the command crew when I heard the news. Pearl Harbor bombed. Half our battleships on the bottom. It didn't exactly improve my appetite any.
Since we were almost ready to put to sea anyway, command ordered us to leave immediately and head to the northern tip of Luzon and engage anything flying a Jap flag. Personally I thought it was a stupid idea; one obsolete light cruiser isn't going to be worth a damn if there's an entire invasion fleet headed our way, but it wasn't my place to argue. I thought it was even stupider when I found out they had a torpedo shortage and weren't going to give us any. It's not like we were, you know, massively outgunned or anything...
Anyway, we left Manilla that night. By mid-morning the next day we were halfway to our patrol area and already we were getting reports of Jap task forces roaming around. This was getting worse by the minute.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-14_224132_086.jpg
We reached our patrol area that night. We had reports of a possible convoy making its way toward us, but from what we heard it would take another couple of days to get here. The next morning morning we got the news that there had been an official declaration of war.
I decided to send up one of our spotter planes to have a look around. About an hour after he took off, he radioed back and said he'd spotted two ships to the north of us headed our way. We turned north and sure enough, it was a Japanese destroyer and a gunboat.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-14_225129_470.jpg
My guess is those ships were scouting ahead of the main force. I don't think they expected to run into any of our ships, and judging by their aim they'd been indulging in some sake the night before. Still, I have to give them credit for fighting spirit. The destroyer kept coming at us even as we pounded him. Eventually our gunners managed to turn his bridge into twisted rubble and he appeared to lose control, but he still fired a few more shots before he finally gave up the ghost.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-14_225836_119.jpg
The gunboat didn't give us much trouble. Once the gunners found the range they dropped a six-inch shell in his midships area and that was that.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-14_230047_416.jpg
We radioed our status and reported the enemy ships, then went back to patrolling. Later that day we were spotted by a couple of Jap seaplanes. Fortunately our watchmen spotted the planes first, and our flak gunners brought them down before they had a chance to do any damage to us.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-14_230646_499.jpg
We continued patrolling. There wasn't any other activity during the day, but we got another surprise that night: a lone Jap merchant. He didn't seem to care when we came after him, and I thought maybe he hadn't gotten the message that there was a war on. We tried to radio him to tell him to stop and heave to but he didn't respond. When that didn't work we tried the signal light. That didn't work either, an neither did a couple of warning shots, so I shrugged my shoulders and told the gunners to open fire. They sank him with a few salvos from the forward 6-inch turret.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-14_235335_853.jpg
There wasn't any activity the next day. We continued cruising in a search pattern and our scout planes kept busy, but nothing turned up. I was asleep when one of the bridge crew woke me up around 11pm and told me there was a convoy dead ahead.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-14_235736_782.jpg
I immediately ordered general quarters and brought us around to starboard so our aft 6-inch turret could join in the fun. We opened fire on one of the two escorting destroyers and caught him by surprise, but he reacted quickly. He wasn't quick enough to avoid getting sunk, but he returned fire and scored a couple of hits. Nothing serious, but it kept us occupied long enough for his companion to have a chance to fire on us with impunity. The second destroyer turned toward us and appeared to be setting up for a torpedo pass. As soon as the first one went down, we shifted fire to the second destroyer and sank him as he was lining up for a torpedo run.
We had started to shell the convoy when a salvo whizzed by over my head. There was another destroyer that had been hiding on the other side of the convoy and was just now coming out to play. Unfortunately for us this guy had had plenty of time to wake up, and he was a pretty good shot. He scored several hits on us and knocked out one of our flak guns. My gunners returned fire and took out one of his forward turrets.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-15_000812_530.jpg
He sank after taking a few more hits.
I then returned my attention to the convoy. The freighters were far too slow to escape, and we pummeled them one by one. They must have been carrying ammunition, because they blew up pretty good. My guess is that this convoy may have been a secondary landing force. Looks like our troops will have things a little easier when the enemy landings start.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-15_001438_747.jpg
We reported our success back to command. They congratulated us, then told us to make our way west and check out a task force one of our subs had spotted. The sub had been detected and attacked by the task force's escorts and didn't get a good look, but they spotted some big ships. We weren't expected to engage the enemy, just stalk them and regularly report their position. I set course for the general area of the task force's last known position.
Early the next morning, our lookouts spotted a lone enemy destroyer ahead. He spotted us around the same time we spotted him, and we soon started trading salvos.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-15_002204_789.jpg
He got a couple of hits on us, but nothing to worry about. We sank him, but just as we was going down shells started whizzing by out of the fog and raining down around us. I looked back toward our stern.
:o:o SWEET MOTHER OF GOD IT'S A BATTLESHIP TASK FORCE :o:o
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-15_002421_798.jpg
HARD TO STARBOARD! GET US OUT OF HERE NOW!
Fortunately the BBs and cruisers never opened fire on us, but their escorting destroyers certainly did. It looked like every destroyer on the port side of their formation was firing at us. Two of them broke formation and chased us as we steamed northeast as fast as we could.
Enemy shells started hitting all over the ship. One slammed into the engine room and took one of our engines offline. The damage control crew scrambled to repair it. Another shell hit the port side of the bridge superstructure, and the shrapnel just barely missed me. Several compartments reported flooding.
We managed to get out of range of the main formation, but the two destroyers on our tail had more than adequate firepower to finish us off in our severely weakened state. I heard a large explosion behind me and at first I though it was my ship, but when I heard several of my crew cheering I looked back toward the pursuing destroyers.

Got you! The aft guns had been returning fire, and one of them must have hit his magazine.
About the same time, the damage control crew managed to jury-rig the damaged engine and we got back up to full speed. We were able to just barely get out of gun range of the one destroyer that was still chasing us, but our aft six-inch turret has longer range than a Jap destroyer's guns, and we kept firing. The gunners managed to score a hit on his bow, and shortly after that he broke off the chase.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-15_002941_517.jpg
I sent a contact report back to fleet headquarters. They responded not long afterward, telling us that it was no longer safe to return to Manila and that we should head to Midway. Everyone aboard ship was only too glad to get the hell out of the deathtrap the the Philippines had quickly become, although I was a bit unsure of Detroit's ability to navigate the open ocean for a prolonged period in her damaged state. I considered heading south to Australia or one of the southern islands, but that option was shot down pretty quickly when I got a radio report that the Japs were invading Borneo and the South Seas were crawling with just an many enemy ships as the Philippines. Midway it is, then.
Of course, the Japs weren't too keen on letting us get away so easily, and we were attacked from the air no less than five times. We were able to avoid any more damage, although the third attack was about a close a call as physically possible. If I hadn't ordered a hard turn to starboard as the Betty made his run, we'd all have been guests of the Honorable Mr. Jones.
Once we finally got out of range of the Jap planes, the big man upstairs decided he hadn't finished making our lives miserable yet. Half the Pacific Ocean seemed to be one giant rainstorm, and we were in it all the way to Midway.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-15_010120_532.jpg
Visibility was horrible, and it was a damn good thing I had one of the best navigators in the US Navy, otherwise we'd have been lost from the moment the rain started. I put him in for a medal for getting us through that storm.
Once we got close to Midway, I doubled the lookouts and we carefully picked our way through the rain and fog. Even with what I at first considered to be excessive caution, we almost rammed the destroyer that Midway sent out to meet us.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb386/steve_the_slim/SH4%20Phillipines%2011%2015%202011/SH4Img2011-11-15_011816_717.jpg
A deadly collision that close to safety would have been just my luck, but the lookouts spotted the destroyer in time to turn away.
Finally, after far too much adventure, we made it to Midway. Those lighthouses were probably the most beautiful sight I've ever seen.

Nice story, great screenshots. I was wondering exactly what mods you're using. The reason I bring it up is that when playing with a submarine I use RFB, because it makes Midway look like the real thing. There are no lighthouses there, and the lagoon isn't even deep enough for a destroyer, let alone aircraft carriers.

Hi y'all. First time poster in the SH4 forum. Had just completed an SH3 campaign from start to finish, and thought maybe it's time I moved on to the next game.
Have been into subsims off and on since the "Aces of the Deep" days; actually waited two years to purchase SH2, but after i finally did, i couldn't bring myself to play the game! :damn:
Originally resumed interest with SH5, but when my machine couldn't play it, i "downgraded" to SH3 and SH4 instead.
As with SH3, my ultimate objective in SH4 will be to complete a U-Boat career campaign, alive. :salute:
As with most people i'm guessing, the movie "Das Boot" (the Director's Cut & Uncut versions) was my entry into the world of the U-Boat.
I have read the book (English translation), and am hoping to worm my way thru Lawrence Paterson's catalog of flotilla records.
Realism (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=576&pictureid=5135) @ 70%, original game specs.
U-181: Type IXD-2 (U-Cruiser) (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=576&pictureid=5136)
As for my patrol logs, I will continue writing them in the form of personal letters in my assumed role as the BdU's hapless nephew many times removed. :O:
Fingers crossed, "ich werde leben".

Dear Onkel Karl,
How are you? I am fine.
My humble thanks once again for promoting me to Oberleutnant, although I'm still somewhat confused by the prerequisite that I accept the Monsun Group assignment in order to be elligible.
In any case, I am writing to you now from Batavia (I think the locals call it "Djakarta"), having played "merchant vessel" for my first patrol. Got to sink a handful before having both my 'scopes knocked out by depth charges. Never underestimate the enemy's ability to drop one in the noggin', whether they are in the Atlantic, the Azores or the Arafura.
Right now, me and my crew are the only Kriegsmarine reps in the Japanese East Indies. Looking forward to having others join the group before too long.
Respectfully yours,
Eschem

Well, I wouldn't want to say I'm using one, rather copied and played with files from several with mass readjustment, mainly I'm just playing with different cloud formations, colors, etc....I'm about done, still playing with night and fog and got to tweak some wakes, fog, etc....
Getting night and moon intensity with clouds is driving me nuts though, still a lil too bright for me, but getting there, too bright with moon, too dark without..blah blah...
Run it over TMO, haven't noticed any issues yet or effect on sensors that I can see, but I'm still playing and testing fog.

:D Yup. And that's why I can't get my motivation back. Frankly im surprised I lasted as long as i did. Yea, I saw them and actually use those and others I find on the net to get as realistic as a look that I can. I just can't seem to finish it, you know, one change effects another, then another and so on...
But, I'm getting about done and will upload it somewhere, don't know that it adds much, but it will give you some pretty SS's..

Well, the game engine is limited. Your not going to get it perfect. Close maybe, but dead on 100% accurate? Never. Maybe not even 90% accurate. For example, some of those pictures i took, are actually rain squalls in the distance. You can't recreate that in game.

Dear Onkel Karl,
How are you? I am fine.
I am baffled by the instructions given during my recently completed patrol. Not that I mind playing "Spy vs. Spy", but sailing all the way back to Cape Town? Wouldn't it have been easier to send someone from the 7th instead? I do believe St. Nazaire is closer.
Managed to secure twin flaks for my "wintergarten", but quite a few torpedos we have at our disposal have been duds. Also, electric eels are hard to come by. I sincerely hope this is not an indication that Group Monsun also doubles as a garbage dump for old, unused T1's. Which reminds me, the few U-boats that have made their way here have been stopovers coming to-and-fro, and nothing more. Surely U-181 is not the only boat stationed in Asia with the task of patrolling the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean AND the waters off Cape Town?
Respectfully yours,
Eschem

Dear Onkel Karl,
How are you? I am fine.
Was extremely dissatisfied with the SK C/30 heavy flak. Upgraded to the FK M42 and was duly rewarded with our first aircraft kill: a "torpedo" plane. Better them than us, I guess.
Got the chance to replace Metox with "Borkum". Now, I know you're not a big fan of radar, but I feel a lot more reassured not having to see that wooden cross atop my boat. Looks rather creepy and ominous, don't you think?
Also decided to apply those damn rubber tiles on U-181 after the experience of our previous patrol. Not that it was needed all that much this time round, mind you.
This last patrol has undoubtedly been my most successful ever - even wiped out an entire enemy task force of eight bound for Mogadishu in the process. However, I feel strangely hollow about the whole thing. After intercepting their route, the ships virtually stopped, as if they were waiting for us to "sink 'em all". Felt like I was in some badly designed "war game" or something.
Nevertheless, I do appreciate the promotion. It was unexpected. Thank you.
Respectfully yours,
Eschem
PS: The Japs over here have this dish called "sushi" - raw fish covered with rice and seaweed! - that has proven to be a favourite among the men. However, my cook has taken his enthusiasm to a new level by casting out a line every now and then during patrols. I'm not sure "gasoline flavour" agrees with me.

I'm about done, but been saying that for months, still got to test the AI as I've messed with fog and waves, but I can't see any effect yet..Also got to play with night a lil and tone down brightness a tad and fine tune some wake colors...Still trying to get some bumpiness out of waves, but can't figure it yet, but you don't really notice it much in game as you do SS, but I've got some pretty good swells going on. Still needs some tuning before release, but I may soon as I never seem to finish tweaking it.
water color a lil off on this one, will adjust later day, but working on waves and wanting some green highlights.

I caught the Midway Carrier Force for the first time, and got a flattop, and slowed the force down to 10 knots by severely damaging one of the big battle wagons. I spent most of the time running so deep, that I thought the boat would crush at any moment, but evaded the tin cans after a good long while. Knowing their direction, I shadowed them, and watched as air attacks did the rest of the damage. Slowing the force down, made them sitting ducks for the planes! And in the confusion, I went in and got a DD, and I tthink a small tanker too.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll37/Conrad_B/SH4Img2011-03-24_201424_528.jpg
I like taking on the Tokyo Express, and caught a surface battle going on and the American ships were outnumbered, so when I got to the scene of the battle, I worked out an attack plan that went great! I needed to take out or at least badly damage the main cruiser in the attack force, so as I maneuvered into a good firing position, the DDs left to make close in attacks on the AMerican ships that were taking a trouncing.
I loosed 3 fish, one hit by the engine rooms area, a second hit amidships in the vacinity of the boilers, and the 3rd one, ......................... well it must have gone off right under the forward powder magazine, as there was a huge explosion and the forward guns fell silent.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll37/Conrad_B/LoadingScreen_12.jpg
The DDs immediatel turned back to their failing big brother who was now doomed to the depths, and while they hunted me, the American ships start to take the offensive. The American Cruisers scored several hits on some of the remaining IJN DDs, and when they would turn their attention on them, I would come up quick, and loose a fish or two at one of them, and regain their attention. I did manage to get one too!
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll37/Conrad_B/LoadingScreen_04.jpg
This was sunrise about 4 hours later, while they still hunted me, although instead of 7 or 8 DDs, there were only 2 or 3 left.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll37/Conrad_B/LoadingScreen_14.jpg
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll37/Conrad_B/LoadingScreen_12a.jpg
Later that day, I found another lone destroyer making only 6 knots on her own. Must have been one of the DDs from the TF so I got into a position to fire from 1500 yards, and let go a single fish. I was down to my last few, so I was being careful.
And sure enough, he saw the wake, but could only muster 9 knots before the fish struck.

I watched from close range as the DD slipped beneath the waves,

Checked my loadout, and was down to one or two more fish, so decided to make tracks for Pearl,

To Hylander and Dreadbeard, what environmental mods - if any - are you using, and when did you dl them?
Thanks!

Whatever came with TMO. So you'll have to ask Ducimus what he used exactly, as I know from his info on TMO he modified Real Envirornment to work with his mod.
Hope that helps!
I also use Nhancer for the vid-cards, and under compatability I tick the HDR option, which seems to give a cool effect to the water and objects in the game. It took a little getting used to though at first, but I really like the look of things with it.
