Hey Sturmer...well, here's the link to the "Ohio" sub mod, that has the missile above, here at subsim. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=148682

There you'll find some info on the sub and its arsenal.

I really dont know much about the sub, I mainly like WW2 subs. But its very cool, no doubt.

Well, did some messing around with GIMP. Had my mind set on a torpedo shot. After some editing (Maybe not my best) here's the results.

Tokyo or Bust!

Variant 2:

Variant 3:

Variant 2 is my personal fav. What do you guys think?

Variant 3 is mine, 2 is neat also. If you had put the text on first then applied the greyscale or what not it might have looked even better, very cool, me likey.

Hi Vandrith!
I use Photoshop CS4. About blending two (or more) images: I used layer mask, but this is not the only way. You can find many tutorials in web. Just Google it.. :03:
Just for example:
http://www.tutvid.com/tutorials/
Blend Two Photos Together in PhotoShop - Using Mask (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZSsSWPsW04)
Composite/Combine Multiple Images (http://www.tutvid.com/tutorials/photoshop/tutorials/compositeImage.php)

Hope it helps. :ping:

Second patrol of the SS- 50/50 USS Narwhal IV. Fourth career.
Captain Will E. Makit in command.

Departed Surabya Java 1 Feb. 1942, Supply drop near Manila Luzon.
80 nms. WNW of Surabya Sound reported fast contacts dead ahead.
Two Hiryu CVs. Two unknown CAs and several escorts making about 20 kns.
Had just enough time to set up for a down the throat shot on one Hiryu CV
Four hits, two good and two did not have time to arm. Made a clean get away. Did a refit in Surabya and contuned my mission.

5 Feb 1942 Tydhei Maru ( small troop ship) sank in the Markessa Strait.

11 Feb 1942 17:58 Hordi Maru (large troop transport) sunk near Pana Island, Philippens.
:woot:A very nice Birth Day present for me, I was born 11 Feb. 1942 at 7:20 AM. Not too bad for a kid but 10 hrs. old!!!!!! :yeah:

14 Feb 1942 Sank a Hetto Maru (medium freighter) in the Lazon Strait.

24 Feb 1942 14:22 picked up mutiple sound contacts almost dead ahead.
Manovered for a vector anilyes shot of about 2,000 yds.
Sound reproted multiple Warships, went to PD at 1 kn. and found
2 Shakaku CVs and 2 unknown cruisers with about 9 escorts at 20kns.
The CVs were on my side so I targeted the lead one. Checking my set up I found the left flank escort would be about 400 yds. off
my bow when I had to shoot so I went to 95 feet and did a sound only attack. First time I have ever done this in daylight on warships. I launched 4 torpedos on 20° bearing.
I was very suprised to see the fish nearing the carrier when I checked the Ext. cam. My fish swam right under the escort and got 3 hits with one missing astern. She sank like a stone.
Went to 300 ft. Silent at 3.25 kns. (100 turns)and got away clean, they never knew where I was.

57,179 Tons and I still got 9 torpedos left. Looks like it's going to be a very good patrol.

Are you sure you don't have some options turned off? I remember that even stock (http://www.sg.hu/galeria/986752963/9867529631204234866.jpg) had pretty good smoke effects.

Super mods, like TMO, further enhance (http://www.sg.hu/galeria/986752963/9867529631230689340.jpg) those effects.

I have smoke when a ship is afire, but no stack smoke. As far as I know, nothing has been 'switched off' though.Oh, in that case, I have no idea. I can't remember if I had smoke from the funnels in stock and never really paid attention to them in TMO either, unless I had to notice ships from a really long distance, as in those cases, only the somke gives them away.

So to answer your original question: smoke shouldn't be linked to mods, they are supposed to be there by default as far as I know.

Red Devil
05-03-09, 01:25 PM
Thanks for that, no, I do not get smoke from stacks and certainly no visible at a distance. Or should I say I do get smoke, but relatively little considering they were coal burning etc.

Thanks for your feedbacks, guys! I always appreciate it.
Non-standard size of my paintings is simply explained: I draw loading screens for russian community. Original loading screens SH4 - 1024x512: when I work, I use size 2048x1024, and then proportionally reduced for web-publishing.
I hope when I finish, I will return to the U.S. and German boats. ;) But not soon: too much work now.. :wah:

@Vandrith,
I had to crop the image to fit in the resolution of 1280x1024 pixels, as you ask. Also I have translated the names of constellations into Latin, and added a sextant. Hope you like it. :ping:

Very few merchants have guns at this stage, I found it was often the only way to be sure of a kill. I save the 20mm AAA for the sampans and aim for the waterline. There are enough single ships to make it worthwhile, but watch out for the Japanese air force! (esp. in TMO!)

I used to play fleet boats with auto targetting and it drove me crazy. I find it a lot easier in a v1.5 U boat where I can fiddle with the settings on the attack map, even if I have auto targetting on.

August 41, based in Lorient (TMO, OM, RSRD) Type IX

Seems the Brits have wised up and there are very few single ships to sink. I seem to find convoys right in the middle of huge seas and clear skies, meaning the torps won't work but if I duke it out with the 105 mm I get nailed by corvettes.

I was a little suprised to sneak through Gibraltar without any interference and thought I'd sneak a peak at the anchorage. One lone Dido class sitting at anchor, no nets, no mines (that I could see anyway). Might as well push my luck, so after sinking a few dozen fishing boats who foolishly decided to fish the waters off Tripoli (hey, I got points for them so don't knock it) I "snuck" into Alexandria after sinking the lone tugboat on patrol.

OMG! A whacking great load of freighters, with 2 BB's, 1 CA and 4 DD's at anchor. I had to go back out to reload the externals and when I got back, they'd respawned! Six DD's, 2 CA's and a BB (damned thing took six hits) and a motley assortment of freighters. I single handedly changed the balance of naval power in the Med! The Italians could sortie from Taranto! The Africa Corps could be resupplied with impunity!

QUICK! Get to open sea and SAVE THE GAME!

Which I did, but when I loaded it again....CTD. No problem, just try it again.....no huge fleet, Gibraltar was crawling with DD task forces now and nothing to be found in the Med except fishing boats and coastal freighters. Got nailed by a DD taskforce on the way back out.:damn:

I'll stick to open seas and Portugeuse fishing boats for a while.....looking forward to "Happy Time Mk II" off the US coast!

This is the idea I am working on currently, to make a skin for the USS "KETE". Partly because it was built in my home town and also because it had an interesting history. I researched the "KETE" and gathered historical info, etc. Since all hands were lost I thought I would skin a Balao class with a emblem and numbers as well as the names of all 87 crew members near the compartments they were in. Then I want to use it in a career.

I'm trying to figure out how to skin each side of the boat without one side being backasswards and of course some markings only in one area of one side, etc.

Your sub skin looks awesome bro... :yep:

no thats the only thing i trip over, you can do that at one side, but the other is mirrored, i hate it, no numbers or text can be added so the conningtower is offlimits, untill someone knows a fix
doesnt matter anyway, the torsk has its teeth painted after the war, just like most of the conningtowers

so all i need is a way to fix text and numbers

Would have used it myself until I skipped the idea of adding numbers.

Hi ichso :D...thank you for the font link. But I've tried it. I really like it except it comes out too thick on the other side of the boat, after applying it to the occlusion map. I first tried all the military fonts available that I could find but none are thin enough. This one comes out too thick/blurry. So unfortunately I had to go with what I used.

Did you get it looking good on both sides? The numbers in my above images were applied using the occlusion map (NSS_[**]_O01).

ichso
05-15-09, 10:37 AM
You're right, numbers on the occlusion maps turn out a bit blurry in the game. Did a quick test (don't look at the colors ^^).
http://cip.uni-trier.de/%7Eschmidt/sh4/bl_number.jpg

runningdeer
05-15-09, 11:01 AM
yeah, I tried touching up the font that you are using on the left side, but it seemed too thick. So I went with another font that is very crisp and more thin...defined.

I know that numbers can look even better. I keep trying different methods and better results every time. But I suppose you can only make a numbers shadow look so good.

ichso
05-15-09, 12:22 PM
Maybe the numbers look a bit more blurry because the occlusion maps are of lower resolution than the texture files, 1024² vs 2048², and the numbers have to be scaled more in order to fit the rest of the texture.

runningdeer
05-15-09, 03:23 PM
Well, I'm still learning, but the way I understand it is that the occlusion map simply casts a 'shadow', some type of 3d utility is needed to make an actual 'texture' on the left side.

I wish I could use white text :yep:. Black works best because of the contrast factor?

I have some awesome white naval font that casts a dark shadow, the same used in photos I've seen of tower numbers, on some boats.

I'm really having fun with this skinning, learning a lot. But editing and getting things to look proper has consumed many hours .

I've been playing with the mission editor and picked it up fairly quickly. I've also been doing a Tonne of modding (my wife plays too and she loves the mods because the ones I make for her make her life easy ... and when I need stress relief they make mine easier too).

So I setup a mission with 2 Yamatos (not accurate I know but it's for fun and kicks etc) and a few battleships, cruisers, carriers, euro liners etc etc. And then went to town

It is said that some brit artist was studying various colors for naval camouflage during WWII and he found that some hue of pink provided the least visibility but no self respecting sailor is going to sail on a pink warship.I think the hue was very odd though almost grey but still it was pink.We should really start a thread about camouflage we could talk about camo types and also post skins.

Strange, next patrol same thing happens, except 4 B-24's attacked the ship I was blasting. Those suckers drop some bombs, about 30 hit the water at the same time and blew it out of the water.

Also, the altitude planes drop the bombs in this game should obliterate themselfs when the bombs detonate. Or atleast get some damage by the shockwave. The explosions in the game are way much smaller than they really are.

The bombs planes drops in the game are 50kg and 200 kg for divebombers and fighters, 250 and 500 for bombers.

Shallow water, can't go under, but they eventually get blown to pieces.

Strange, I also noticed the planes attacking the stationary ground turrents, bomb and strafe them over and over. After a direct hit they would move to the next one. Course I haven't got close, but I wonder if
they can actually be destroyed by planes...don't think so.

Yeah if it was IL2 the fighters and smaller bombers would have skip bombed the crap out of those ships. It is fun to skip bomb yourself in IL2 but it does take some time to get it right.

I think Armistead should get IL2 then he can have the subs and the airplanes to boot.It is fun to watch an attack but all the more fun to be flying a plane in said attack never knowing when your wing might get blown off by a dead eye AA gunner.Like Navy pilots say; Always remeber there are far more planes at the bottom of the sea than there are submarines in the sky.

I am not entirely sure about the dates here on this patrol but this was a good one so I thought I would share it with you. I run SH4 1.4 with TMO installed and that is really it.

I left Pearl on June 3rd 1942 after just taking over command of the USS Drum. My mission was to drop 6 commandos off on the island of Java, so I had a long way to go.
I left Pearl headed for Midway at flank speed, as I was getting closer I got a message advising me that there was a major battle on at Midway.
Through the day on the 4th I started to run into a lot of planes on patrol, and had to dive to evade. By night time on the 5th I was approching Midway and I was able to sneak into rearm and resupply. I then set course for Java. As I left Midway during the night I stayed on the surface running at about 10 knots. Early morning on the 8th I wasn't paying close enough attention and was caught on the surface and was bombed by a random Zero that was flying by. With one hit, it blew a hole threw the engine room. I had 51% damage from that one hit and my engines were off line so I crash dove down to 150 feet and began repairs. It took me almost a full day to get my engines back online. So I began to run again on the surface on the night of the 9th. I was able to get a look at my boat on the surface and the damage looked pretty bad. You could see all the way through the hull to the engine room. I had learned my lesson after that. Anytime I saw a plane I dove to PD. By the 12th I reached Wake Island and I continued on about 150 miles SW I got a contact on radar. I got a bit closer and began to get multi contacts, so I had come across a convoy! I was heading SW and they were coming right at me going to the NE. I manuevered at flank speed directly west so I could side step them and get myself the perfect setup. I decided that I was far enough out and swung the ship back around toward the convoy continuing at flank untill I was with in 5k yards. At that point I pulled the plug. By then I found that I was attacking 6 ships, 2 of which were DDs, and the other ones were Heavy Cruisers! So I continued to move in for there perfect beam shot, they had the two DD's runing one on each side of the convoy. As the DD closed with me I dropped my periscope and rigged for silent. It passed by and he wasn't even doing any active pinging! I popped my periscope up and saw that there was one Heavy Cruiser lagging behind the others. If you can call 27 knots as lagging. By that time the cruiser was about 30 degrees off my starboard, traveling at 27 knots it wouldn't take it long to line up, so I waited till it was about 25 degrees and I shot all 6 forward torps at him. I then crash dove and ran at flank to get on the other side of his track so I could set up a stern shot. As I was running the screen popped up showing my topedoes closing in on the target. My first topedoe was about 50 feet under the target! I couldn't believe it all that work and a great shot, and missed! About that time.......the other five struck home and he was blown compeltely apart! I dove down 300ft and headed directly S at 3 knots to evade the DD's that were coming for me. I was lucky enough to be able to get under 2 thermal layers so they were unable to find me. They dropped a few half hearted depth charges but I just continued on for about and hour and then returned to course and surfaced about three hours later just to make sure.

So.....I don't know if anyone will really read this so if you guys want me to finish the patrol let me know but I got a bit long winded here so I don't even know if you'll read it lol. Let me know what ya think!

Alright so for that patrol

I continued on to the SW into the Banda Sea, about two days later I think it was close to the 14th I got a convoy hit on my radar about 20 miles to my south. It was in the middle of the night so I figured I would continue in on the surface I began to run in at flank trying to identify what I was shooting at. There were three ships running in a line from North to South, I finally got ident on them, three tankers, the lead was a large, the two following were small. I swung out to the West to side step them a bit so I could set up for beam shots. By this time they were about 7400 yards out still to the south of me coming in a straight line and I was set up to close on there track. I pulled the plug and went down to PD, I kept track of them via sonar and stayed at flank. I closed to within 1000 yards of the track and came to full stop and waited for them to close the distance. As I was waiting I began to pickup a warship on sonar, and then another. Apparently on the opposite side of the convoy there were to DD's. Just freaking great, so I rigged for silent, and waited for my shots. I prefer to not make the torpedoes do a lot of turning on there own so I wait until the first ship is at 0 degrees , and the second ship is within 10 degrees to starboard. I send 4 fish at the large tanker, and 2 at the next one in line. I then dive to 150 and try to run under the convoy. Almost as soon as I let my fish go I begin to hear pings from the DD's. I increase to flank and follow my fish in. I had one dud on the first guy but all the other three hit, and he began to break up. The second guy took both torpedoes and didn't sink but he did come to a full stop so I ran under him. The DD's ran to where I had been as I passed under the tanker so I came back up on the opposite side and let another fish go from my aft tube into the tanker which took him out.....but also took my cover away and the DD's waisted no time coming for me. I crash dove 250, but couldn't seem to get a thermal layer. They came at me on the first run and were pretty well lined up, but moving at flank and maneuvering I was able to evade. As soon as they passed by I dropped back down to 1/3rd to try and get as silent as possible. I changed course and tried to go back to the west but they lined up on me again, so I had o run at flank while they tried to drop depth charges on me. They missed again so I cut speed again down to 1/3 and went down to 300 feet. I figured what the heck this is a brand new sub test depth shouldn't be to bad. Still no thermal layer, so they lined up on me again. I began making 90 degree turns while doing my flank runs to evade there depth charges. I still couldn't get them to go away. I dropped down to 350 to see if that would help. Again, they lined up on me and I had to jump to flank, another 90 degree turn. When I dropped back down to 1/3 I took her to 400 feet. FINALLY I found a thermal layer at 376 feet. They were unable to line up with me after that. I stayed at 1/3rd and had swung my self back around to the east. After about an hour I could still here them to my aft, so I kicked it up to 2/3rds and was able to get away. Not to bad for 1 Large Tanker, and 1 small one.

Played vanilla 1.5 for a long time, since last week i use TMO 1.7...difficulty on hard and 75% realism.

We left for our first patrol from Midway in our Purpoise boat the SS.Permit..all is well clear skies and a nice tune on the gramophone everybody's happy and i conduct a couple of dive-drills to get a feel for what has changed..one dive to 400 feet and a couple of battle staion drills, man what an improvement to actually hear the crew communicating..so we surface and commence on our long trip to the Tokyo area, hoping to sink whatever we can.

Then halfway one of my watchmen spots an aircraft at 6 miles,no time to waste now so we crashdive and level the boat at 200 feet.25 degrees port rudder and at standard speed we wait for the inevitable bombs or depth charges, tension rises amongst the crew,is it a recon plane or a maritime fighter-bomber?

Zero rudder now and we are about 1000 yards from our point of dive, way to the starboard side..then BOOM!! the boat is rocking like crazy and panic breaks out, report damage from all compartments to the captain!!
We have bad luck....the worst except for sinking....the starboard screw shaft bearing is damaged beyond repair!

Disillusioned we have only one option left, repairs at Midway..at 4knots the single port screw takes us back to our port, end of the patrol for now!

After repairs at Midway(lucky they had a spare bearing on the tender)we return once more to the original mission area,we are to patrol an area roughly between Tokyo and Kobe,a very dangerous area with lots of air patrols..

After 3 days of mindless boring patrolling our sonarman picks up a faint signal..."single contact, merchant bearing 283 speed 10 knots".. a lone traveller trying its luck at night to get to the next safe port, not this time!

After some plotting i decide to take the boat to periscope depth, the interception point is about 1300 yards at current speed and i take my time to line us up for a nice shot or two..crew at battle stations and its time to rise the periscope,we are exactly where we want to be.

Unwary of the carnage ahead most of the Jap crew is sleeping,no guns on this one and i estimate her to be a 8100 ton cargo vessel probably carrying supplies to one of the islands now in Japanese captivity,we sink her and our boys will have a less difficult time when the moment arrives to take back what was free land..that's why we are here and it keeps us motivated, morale is high but the job has yet to be done!

The moment arrives, i order tubes 1 and 2 ready and keep 3 in mind in case of a dud.Final calculations are made and the TDC gets its latest updates, only 30 seconds to fire!"Fire tubes 1 and 2!" i scream and the first fish leaves it berth on the way to devastation, she makes a high pitch noise and is running hot straight and normal,2 gets out and starts chasing down its path, down scope and we change course so the ship cant report our position judged from the steam trails of our deadly fish..we leave nothing to choice,we all have families and i take no unnessesary risks as far as my crew is concerned.

"Time on 1?" i ask our firing officer.."12 seconds sir" he replies and i take the periscope up for a look.At 5 seconds my heart starts pounding,is it a dud or a hit? Then we hear a loud explosion and we feel a shock wave travelling through the boat and our bodies..we hit her! Some of the crew start cheering but others are listening, what about number2?

5 seconds past the point of intercept we hear a small bang, the torpedo has hit the ship but failed to explode,it happens to all boats and some swear and turn away in disgust, all this risk and a failing 12000 dollar torpedo..

The ship is hit just behind the bridge section and is making water..i see sailors in total panic running across the deck trying to salvage anything before they leave the doomed ship..i see movement on the bridge as the desparate captain is turning his ship towards us,he wants to ram us!Failing torpedos have alot of concequences i think to myself, lets get this over with!

We line up with the ship and estimate her distance at around a 1000 feet,we have time for a quick shot and an evading dive, and that's exactly what we are going to do,a bow shot on a slow travelling ship is a risk but at this time we want her to go down as fast as possible, the attack has lasted for 10 minutes now and they must have radiod for help.

"Fire number 3!" and the torpedo rushes out at maximum speed,no use in running it for distance now,we want a quick hit."Prepare for collision, crashdive!!" i yell and like an oiled machine every crew member does his job,"right full rudder all ahead flank!!,20 degrees on the dive planes!",at this speed we dive like a rock and soon the indicator reads 100 feet....120 feet..we are safe and pulling away from our target..then BOOM!! and our boat is severely rolling from one side to another like a drunk fat man..some of the crew lose their grip and are trown about, some scream in pain we came a little too close for comfort, but our suffering is soon turned into joy as we hear the bulkheads of the ship break up,its an eery sound and we listen for a while, then it turns silent again...we smile at eachother..

We go to periscope depth and after 30 minutes i order the boat to surface, the moon is high now and i feel good, time to report to base.

The rest of the night all is peacefull and quiet,we think about our succes and some think about the sailors on board the enemy ship,we are sailors too..at least we saw some of them board the rescue dingy...as for her captain i feel no sympathy..

2 days pass and no contacts,we have another 10 days of fuel but we are dissapointed by the lack of targets, still 15 fish left."smoke on the horizon sir!" one of the watchmen screams and we look at eachother, can it be?

One smoke plume soon turns into 2,then 3 and as we close in we see 7 smoke plumes, jackpot!I decide to follow the convoy for a while,so we can judge its course, there is still not much to see as we close in,weather has deteriorated and visability is low,but that goes for everyone so we close in some more......2 escorts,4 merchants of about 4000 tons each and a small tanker, now the chess play begins, can we reach an intercept point right now or do we need to manouver into a ideal position with an end around move?If we position right now we can only fire at one or two targets, moving away and attacking tommorow at night will take alot of effort and some luck, but we have more time if we do to empty our tubes.

I give the order to proceed on and end around course,we have plenty of fuel for a run and we can avoid the escorts more effectively,we stay in visible range and are able to track the convoy, she's zig-zagging and the escorts move from one side of the convoy to the other every hour, something we can abuse.Darkness falls once more and we have trouble tracking the convoy,we lose visual sight and only track on sonar now..no problem our sonarman is excellent and keeps a keen ear on our prey..we are now running about one hour in front of the convoy and i order the last leg of our interception course to be followed, all hands battlestations!

We lay there like a wolf waiting on its prey, periscope depth, nobody can see or hear us...the convoy moves in slowly and all men are prepared. The tension and excitement moves in once again, but this time sooner...this time they will fire back..time has almost frozen now and we wait and wait, nobody makes a sound, sound is deathly now...must keep quiet..

The convoy is now beyond rescue,we are in firing range and i feel the adrenaline pumping inside,my throat dries up and i feel my eyes burning....i'm in my element now....nobody can stop us now..

"Ready tubes 1 to 4"....and i aim for one of the merchants..the idea is to fire at one of the merchants, shoot at the tanker and then quickly turn around and fire at another merchant with our aft tubes...range is 4500 yards and that gives us enough time to fire all tubes before the first torpedo hits..we want to keep the element of suprise for as long as we can..that will give us time to escape facing away from the convoy,no use hanging around with all tubes empty..."fire tubes 1 and 2"...and there they go..i quickly turn to set up a shot for the tanker and calculations are fed into the TDC at rapid fire rate,"fire tubes 3 and 4"...the fish leave and we turn around as quickly as the boat will let us,turning this fast some of the interiour equipment is trown about, some china smashes into the floor and i lose my favourite record as i see it smash into a thousand little pieces..no more inkspots for this crew..the sonarman looks at me like he saw a ghost...."4 more contacts sir bearing 134,8000 yards and closing fast"...the unexpected element,it was inevitable..attacks never go as planned.

The boat is now in position for the aft shot and i pick out the target,"contacts still moving in 314,6500 yards and closing",we still have time....we still have time...

"fire 5 and 6!"both fish are on their track and i order "down scope, all engines flank make our depth 400 feet, diveplanes to 20 degrees Mister Jenkins",my diving officer looks at me,his eyes say "400?are you crazy?",his voice speaks "yes sir,400 feet"...some men start praying..

Then we hear explosions, secondary ones too but we remain quiet, the first torpedo's found their targets, then more explosions....i smile..i try to visualise whats going on in that convoy right now...must be hell up there, then more explosions and the signature sound of ships breaking up,we are now at least 5000 yards from the convoy and i order the boat rigged for silent running,1/3 ahead...now we wait.."4 contacts moving in on our position at 4000 yards,2 escorts and 2 destroyers" the sonarman informs me.

"We are being pinged, sir",they found us...."take us to 500 feet"...we go as deep as we dare, only depth can keep us alive or kill us in an instant,if we die it will be quick and painless.."2000 yards and closing sir"..."1000 yards"..."then the sound banging of screw blades and splashes...directly above us "brace for depth charges!!"...then a clicking sound and the enormous loud bang of a depthcharge,another....another...they seem to be set too shallow for us...no surprise there at 500 feet and 100 feet under test depth..this goes on for an hour and we get used to this bizarre situation,we stopped counting the depth charges and the cook is making coffee...surreal almost.Then..."contacts moving away sir"...the escorts are taking off to protect the remains of the convoy, the destroyers seem to be heading somewhere else,we dont know where..guess they ran out of depth charges or suspect another sub somewhere as we often hunt in packs,i guess we were lucky and the enemy inexperienced..

We stay submerged for some time, the sonar loses all contact and we surface and get back on patrol course, the fun is over..

An hour or 2 later we sink another merchant with our remaining torpedos...2 duds out of 4,there is something seriously wrong with these fish.I remind myself to report this when we return. We have fuel left to remain on patrol for another 5 days but something feels wrong...we see more and more aircraft too close and we dive constantly during the day...they know we are here and want to keep us submerged so the ships can slip trough..its no use to stay here....during the night we transmit our position and status,we will patrol another area for the remaining 5 days.

The new area is devoid of enemy shipping,we spot some fishermen on the third day but we decide not to reveal ourselves to them, everybody has a radio these days..another 2 days pass before we return..but not just yet as we spot a large fisherboat, signalling her crew to abandon ship i decide to try something different,i will line myself up with tube number one, stick my thumb out and try a visual shot on dead reckoning!

At 800 yards and facing the now crewless fisherboat i give my thumb a good lickin' and line it up with my eye,i start counting out loud " 5...4....3...2...1 Fire!"The torpedo is running and i keep my fingers crossed, this could prove handy in case of an emergency and no working instruments left. The torpedo is a hit but fails to explode, another dud. However the gap in the hull of the fisherboat is big enough to sink her in a couple of minutes, all 200 Tons of her.."take us on a course for Midway" a big cheer goes trough the crew!

The mood onboard is now light hearted, some of the crew perform a show acting like hoola-girls,we all get a good laugh out of it and i start to see a team, not only a crew...all good men.

We are welcomed at Midway with alot of cheering and praises....we sunk 28000tons of enemy shipping!

As i write this sitting safely at my desk i recall the important moments, but so much has happened during this patrol and i'm so tired that i have to stop now...we sail again in 2 weeks.
