I've lurked on and off from the days of playing SH1 in 2001. Just found it looking for info on SH3 and Harpoon Classic on google. But only signed up this year. Never had too many questions before getting SH3 and was never big on sharing my feelings on anything much until now.

Finally after all these years I manage to post a picture.

The photo was taken at the Australian War Memorial, Hyde Park Corner, London, United Kingdom. The memorial had only been opened a couple of weeks earlier in November 2003 by my Prime Minister John Howard.

How did you learn about Subsim?

Searching for "Aces of the deep" with a search engine.
Other interesting results frome same search: uboat.net and the disapperared fine unofficial guide of Hans Abbadon

When did you first visit?

The same day, but just for a quick look, as I spent more time on the other two.

What do you recall about Subsim upon your first vist? (Some article, some game, maybe some forum topic, etc.)

Download and suggestion sections; forum's exploration started later

What type of forum was Subsim using at the time? (Matt's BBS, EZBoard, phpBB 1.44, etc)

Don't ask me, as I don't know what kind of forum we are using now.

What was your name or Subsim nickname then? Same as now or something else?

Same as now; my name for a Aces of the Deep captain (died just after subscription)

But i'll tell you there is no limit for what our passengers might do inside a tiny 737 lavatory :o

I was looking around google (god I love that search engine) for sub sims. And ta-da! Subsim.com shows up!

What do you recall about Subsim upon your first vist? -
How active the forums were. I had sort of floated around a couple other sub forums, and then came here and was like WOW. I have found the subsim mecca of the world, here!

What type of forum was Subsim using at the time? -
The current one of this posting.

What was your name or Subsim nickname then? Same as now or something else? -
Cpt. Stewker. I always use Stewker in my online nicks, it's a play off my last name. In EVE Online I am Minan Stewker. In WoW I am Stewker. Cpt. Stewker just fit this forum good, Boat captains and all ;)

Anything else you would like to mention (nostalgic times, people, events in the Subsim community) - Nothing really nostalgic or any really big events, I just haven't been around for long enough. I got here in time to witness all the clamouring for GWX though, and got to witness the record for most people online the forums! Also want to mention that the community here is AWESOME. I have gotten into Flight Sims, but this community rocks too much to take the dive in another forum. We should create a flight sim section here... even though it's called Subsim.com ;)

I'm trying to confince him to write a book on his time in WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam. And hopefully he'll start soon. His daughter says that what he's told her is quite interesting. It's something to hear of a WWII vet flying in 3 wars. Although they wouldn't let him fly combat in Nam. In Korea he flew F-84s. He told me what flew in Nam but I can't remember what it was. BTW, his P-51 in WWII was named "The Count".

Ahoy Fish, Sir!

Yes, it's me.
This pic was made on the last reunion of the Dutch: Korps Commando Troepen.
We both are former commando's, the building behind us was our base while we are in the army, we even slepth at the same room with 30 years in between.
The building is demolished and new buildigs are build because due to the war on terror our corps is growing.

Hi everyone, long-time reader, only recently a poster

I was born in 1986 in Halifax, NS, Canada and have lived in the area for my whole life. I became interested in military topics through my father. His appreciation was in turn passed on from his father, who was a British motorcycle courier during WWII.

I am an undergraduate student :know: majoring in political science. I am most often preparing papers on foreign policy, international relations, maritime security, etc. etc.

In between studying, studying, and studying, I find time to play DW, SH3, and many other games. I also enjoy digital photography (check out my gallery (http://www.jmgillis.com/index.php?page=gallery) if you are interested, I am still learning!) and sometimes fine-scale ship modelling, although not so much lately.

Cheers!

I never thought of posting all that stuff. 11 years for me.

I’m now single/divorced for 29 years
22 years here.

I have two grown children and four grandchildren
Two and none.

I was onboard when John Wayne made the movie “In Harms Way”
Awesome!

I saw the World’s Fair in Seattle in 1962
Same here! My dad took me, as I was only 12 at the time.

I was on the drill team for Fag Ship of the First Fleet
I'm sure you meant flag ship.:rotfl:

I was exhilarated (did I spell that right) of all blame for going over the hill for three days and restored to the United States Submarine service
Yes, it's spelled right, but the wrong word. 'Exhilarated' is 'excited'. 'Cleared would be 'exonerated'.

Great story. I would love to sit and swap sea stories with you some time.

Actually, sometimes they use white strips of tape to make camo-patterns on their gear. And if you are in a wood-area with conifers, this could actually prove to be a quite good camouflage. In the Norwegian army there is a rule: If it is snow on the ground, but no snow on the trees, you should only use white camo pants (not a complete winter camo). I think this varies from nation to nation, though.. :hmm:

Cool.

I have the same birthdate as Sailor Steve. April 8th. However in 1963.

And like Sailor Steve, I'm a former sailor, served in the Canadian Navy from 1980-2005. I am also a "combat vet" having served aboard HMCS Terra Nova" during the first Gulf war 1991. I dont like the term combat vet because it sounds like I went trough the same thing as my grandfather in WW2.

I was born in Thunder Bay Ontario and now live in Toronto. Retired right now and living off my pension. It's kind of hard to do in a high cost city so I will either have to move or get a job soon. I think I will do both.

I was divorced in 1994 after being married for 2 years. No kids, but I do have two cats.

Right now I have no idea what I am going to do after spending all those years in the military. I miss it I guess.

I have some GFs. No real thing with any of them, I'm not made for that, or maybe the life I've chosen didn't me make for that. So maybe it's my fault. Anyway, it's a lot of sport, let me tell you. Again my fault maybe, but hey, it comes so easy to me.

What else can I say? My dreams? Retire in style.

Canada, maybe. Or Sweden. Or Antarctica (if I'm forced to)

That's all....

Have a nice day.

Name: Jyrki

Age: 33

Home: I live in Oulu, Finland (it's about half kilometer to Gulf of Bothnia from my keyboard).
My roots are from Belgium to Holland to Finland. Other members of my ancestors are displaced mostly to scandinavia, but there are some at England, USA and Brazil too.

Occupations: Information Technology Consultant, musician.
I've been playing guitar since I was 6 years old. I've been in few bands and we had few gigs in the Russia in early 90's but otherwise we played in Finland.
I've also had other jobs earlier, strangest was being a traffic guide to children's car park.

Hobbies and interests:
I'm a fan of submarines (specially WWII), aircrafts (specially prop planes and with piston engine... for some reason I don't like turboprops...?). I would love to be a bush pilot at Canada or Alaska... of course it's easy to have no problems and cons when you dream of it... :)

I'm also fan of martial arts and I have been training wrestling, judo, aikido and jujutsu... then I became a jujutsu teacher for some years until I broke my left shoulder.

The list goes on: Heavy metal, blues, some ethereal ambient music (I don't know how to describe that last one... but if you have heard Canadian group called Delerium, then you know... specially songs: After All, Fallen).

Motorbikes are part of my life. Currently I have VS800 Intruder GL (Custom). I'm desperately waiting for driving season here in Finland... it's almost here.... maybe 3 to 4 weeks...
I seem to change from custom bikes to racing bikes and back to custom bikes. I like the speed and insane acceleration but I also like a relaxed cruising with really cool sound :)

I'm also a fan of racing cars. I started sim driving with F1 Grand Prix by Microprose. I used to drive in Finnish Nascar league with Papyrys's Nascar sims and my ego with racing on tarmac is just something unbelievable...I'm definately sure that nobody on earth is able to beat me... if I lose some race... I can find some other reason than me...;)

I'm also fan of Star Wars, Star Trek, Indiana Jones, action movies generally, adventure movies generally and now comes the odd part... romantic comedies, which doesn't exactly line up with my face and my other interests :)

I like reading. I like Tom Clancy, David Morrell, Nicholas Sparks, Stephen King, Dean R Koontz, R.A. Salvatore, and so on...

Dislikes: Racism, animal abuse, I don't like that there's only 24 hours a day (It's way too little time to do all the things...)

How did you learn about Subsim?
Propably via google (propably searching for some info about Silent Hunter or Aces Of The Deep, or some other...)

When did you first visit?
Not really sure. I've played submarine sims for years, so I can't really point the exact year. I mean the first was Silent Service with C-64 or Amiga... maybe not a sim, but it was a start :)

What was your name or Subsim nickname then? Same as now or something else?
I didn't join the forum until 2005, I only visited the various submarine related sites for info earlier.

And now for the pics...

Don't laugh the older one, I just had to post it too... my friends goes laughing insanely every time they see it :D
The older one is from 1992 (with the 1990's style :D) and the newer with the less hair is from 2004.

Kingcobra24 is a variation of my Air Force callsign. I was an attack helo driver - callsign Cobra-Two-Four.

Age...soon to be 58

Born and raised in Maine with a 4 year stint with Uncle Sam that took me from Texas to California, Illinois, Thailand, Japan, Australia, Vietnam, Laos and Florida. Also a 10 year residency in Florida. I still fly whenever I can, having an ATP (Air Transport Pilot) ticket.

Career choice - Mechanical Engineer. Currently waiting to see about getting Social Security with Disability. Besides having a very bad back, I also have an aneurysm of the aorta which carries a number of complications that have, to date, scared off 7 surgeons at three hospitals. (I've never been one to do anything the easy way...:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:)

My father died of a stroke in 2003 and my mother, currently 85 years young, was operated on successfully for colon cancer in September, and has now been diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes.

Twice divorced...two daughters, both college graduates...both married...both made me a grandfather twice, each giving birth to two girls each at three years apart.

Hobbies are flying, scuba diving, Shotokan karate, bowling, horseback riding and reading...most of these have been cut back extensively or dropped altogether due to health reasons.

I guess that should be more than adequate. :hmm:

Name: Johannes (and both my grandfather's names according to my passport)
Age: 27 (soon 28)

Family history: German, sudeten German from my father's side, east prussian from my mother's family. A lot of not very nice stories about what happened 1945 to be told.... Paternal grandfather was an assault gun driver and gunner in Russia in WW2, maternal grandfather was with 1st Mountain Div in Norway and the Caucasus.
Since my nominally catholic father is atheist, I was baptized as a protestant at my genuinely prussian grandmother's inistance ;)

History: Born in Frankfurt am Main, went to school there and still studying there.
1999-2000 military service in the german navy, served as ship's company on the sail training vessel Gorch Fock (II), climbed a lot of masts (I was afraid of height before that), sailed across the Atlantic, survived the Bermuda triangle, american beer and at least two major storms. After that, life became dull...

Location: Langen, a dull town with cheap rents about 25 km south of Frankfurt
Family: None yet, currently single and looking, but subsim.com is hardly the place for that :rotfl:

Occupation: studying law at Frankfurt university, translating industrial manuals, also translation and security work at the trade fair, used to work as a language teacher.

Interests: History, naval stuff and a lot of other topics and things which have no immidiate use in life...

Hobbies: gaming (anything connected with historical topics that has some realism, mostly Il-2 Sturmovik and SH3/4 but sometimes I even play RPGs like Vampire Bloodlines), the usual university student's hobbies such as drinking and generallyw a having a good time until the morning after. Seriously need to get into dancing, so I don't drop my dancing partners on the floor like on last Saturday's party.

Sports: running, swimming, used to do sailing but I have no boat and no immidiate acess to any water larger than a pond.

How I learned of subsim.com:
I had known the site for long, but until SH4 came along I was just a silent lurker and "customer" of the best SH3 mods. SH4 release was a nice opportunity to come out of the lurker's corner.

Well, bored so here's me:

Alan Bradbury, born 1965, in the UK, North West of England. Originally worked as a graphic artist, but then went on to work at a daily newspaper first as a designer, then switched to sub-editing and then switched again to become a writer for the same paper for about ten years. Left that job and now work as a freelancer, I also do a lot of work for a training company where I train people on DTP applications such as Photoshop, Quark and Illustrator and run a copywriting course. Occasionally write software reviews for avsim.com too.

Been into computers since the year dot, first one I actually owned however, was a Commodore 64. Now have lots of Macs and PCs since I need them for training.
Initially got really interested in computers for the flight sim possibilities, and still like all that, but these days I fly the real thing too (see the pictures below).
Got into submarine sims with the games Silent Hunter and Silent Service 1 and 2 and the Das Boot game (anyone remember that?) but actually came across subsim when ferreting around for info on SH2.

Done a lot of modding and building stuff for sims, but mainly flight simulator.
Married in 2000 and currently live with my missus and eight dogs, including Dave (below), my German Shepherd Dog. Also into Land Rovers and drive the one pictured. And yes, I did do the paint job myself (took bloody ages).

Hey ya'all!

Hannah Vaughan

Born 10/17/90

I'm currently living in Barnesville, Georgia.

I've lived in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia

5'6, auburn hair, green eyes, very pale skin.
I'm pretty slender, but ask Rich, I've got some pretty impressive curves now that I'm back to my healthy weight

I live with my dad in a little house, my parents are divorced, my mum is completely insane. I have a cute little brother who likes to take the phone and hang up on Richie. :nope:

Speaking of Richie, I'm head over heels in love with Kapitan_Phillips, who I met over the internet. We've been together for two years and almost two months.

I enjoy reading, drawing, chatting with my man, and daydreaming. I got into subs because of Rich, and he's the one who referred me here.

Age: 55
Sex: Male
Current Residence: United States of America
Occupation: Retired (originally, a bodyguard for the Shah of Iran and later a Captain in the military)
Bio: Not a whole lot to me, just a human being who likes games and computers and books and guns. Had an exciting life 25 years ago, but... this is 25 years later. Currently, I belong to several other websites that are about the navy. I have several brothers and several sisters. My parents are deceased, but life goes on. I was born in Tehran, Iran on March 12, 1952 and lived there until 1988. I originally served as a guard for the Shah, but when the revolution came, I joined the regular army. I served in the war against Iraq and left the country afterwards to see my family in the US. I've lived here ever since, and I'll probably die here with overseas restrictions and whatnot.

me!
Name....uhhhhh, well i cant tell u my real name, its the parking internet, but most of the time i go under Dante. i just like the name
current place of residence: the one country everyone loves to hate, USA. a lil detail here, a veeery very smalll town close to the mississippi...can you say corn?
job: JOB?! haha, im only 16 here, i spend most of my days playing SH3, i do have sh4 but it doesnt work and it was the last copy.

well, this is why im called sledgehammer...
im a strong individual...six foot 2 200 pounds (sorry, europeans, im not familiar with kilos) my dad had me break up some rocks with a sledgehammer, maybe it was the grain in the wood handle...or what, i broke it twice.

current disposition in Silent hunter 3...
well, i have 2 major campaigns, one under my real name, and the other as Thomsen (Das Boot Fan for life!)as of yet, only 20,000 per patrol, with any luck, GWX will work now and ill have plenty of cutsie pie stories to share with the rest of us kids:D
no bernards on my boat (well, there were a couple of accidental torpedoes fired while i was punching the time compression button...)current veteran of 52 (yes i counted) depth charge attacks, and gotten damaged in only one. im usually only at 3% realism (game lags like a b**** with the event camera running) but i venture out at 100% now and then

glad to be here, hope to get some of my own stuff going in the pictures section

Sledgehammer427.....insofar...fairly jolly pirate of the atlantic

Hello everyone, after joining and spilling my posts a bit all over the threads I think I'll introduce myself. I may get very carried away (as I always get) at some points so excuse me for the long post.

My name is Dávid Nagy, 17, living in the "City of Sunshine", Szeged, in Hungary (so lovely place to get killed by the hot summer).
I was born in Budapest, the capital, but we had to move because of the change of my mother's workplace when I was 6 and so I started my elementary school in Szeged-Szőreg, a whole new place for me. First few years I tried to act so I can get closer to the friend groups (which were formed before, in the kindergarten) without much success. Later on I realized I shouldn't try to be common to others, I should walk on the way I'd like to walk. That time, around 12, started history and Hungary interest me and I started to suck in informations regarding them.
They never really understood me in my elementary class, but at the end I didn't care what they thought about me. I started to read a lot of books and grew fond of them. Also I wrote a few poems, but then I realized that the things that are in my mind and I write about are too complicated for me to fully translate it into a good poem (and sometimes stressful to even think about them) so I gave up writing in rhymes.
I chose an economy school to study in, because I'm also very interested in economics. I like to play with numbers to find better, practical, more profitable ways of producing, building. But mainly I'm just doing this on the level of hobby.
I have a very good class now, they understand me or at least they don't bother me and they tolerate all my "strange" thoughts and goals (which I have more and more as the years pass).
As my love for history grew I started to look for plus informations about everything. I can't name a favourite country or period from history, I'm interested in everything.
In my opinion the history is like a spider web: everything is influenced by everything. You can't cut the timeline into fully separated periods and you can't draw a line and say that nothing happened before/after that date. Everything is in connected; even the furthest parts of the web and you cannot cut out one part without the whole structure loosing its beauty and strength.

But the thing I love more than the facts of the past are the people behind the grey papers of a history book. People, who lived their lives under the (occasional) dark storms of history and sometimes they didn't foresee the changes in the future.
To make this understandable I can say the example of the good people living in deep valleys, among great mountains (don't think of some 3rd continent, you can find them in Europe and the USA and everywhere else as well).
They lived their lives: talking, gossiping, loving, caring, doing the right or wrong things, they joked on each other and themselves. Then when the storms came, spilling blood because of the words of big leaders, these people tried to find the good (but narrow) path between the lies, murder and other guilty things. Mostly they succeeded finding it and cheerfully tried to live their lives. There are stories about them, how they lived unhindered by history. Some of them funny, some of the sad. But they all let us learn from these people's faith.

I love the people, I love to take a peak into their souls, to see what they think and how they live their lives. Whatever you say, whatever bad acts I see made by them, I think that one of the little wonders of the world we are all surrounded by are the people itself. Everyone, may it be little or big, black or white or yellow, man or women have little diamonds in them, little wonders that are worth discovering and to get to know.

Well that's one thing they call strange in me, and oh mein Gott I got really carried away.

I'm a big lover of reenactment. Primarily because of my love of history and of Hungary. We show others how they lived in the war of freedom in 1848/49, how they made their weapons, how they believed in victory or how they feared the Russian tsar's and the Austrian kaiser's armies and how our history was changed by this war. We do the same in with our other, WW2 reenactment group. We try to bring back an age and the simple people of the age. We make classes in schools and try to show the youngsters something about the past, something which is different than what they read on the books' grey pages. Also it's a great thing in reenactment that the reenacters from both sides, once enemies, chat happily and form great friendships. We refight the battle of Szőreg for example and then we excitedly chat with the Czech reenacters about the battle play and about the whole event.
I'm trying to hold a plus history class in my school, to talk about things freely, to give the others interested some extra information or stories about some periods of history.

I don't know yet what I should do after the high school, mostly I'll go to a university... but after that? It's an open question.

Country of Residence: Estonia or Estland or Eesti, whichever you prefer.
Ocupation: Sheetmetal worker
Bio: Not much to say here really, dont have any form of a useful education exept a highschool diploma though thats more to do with my choise than being unable to learn. Im interested in military hardware, mostly of the WW2 era, medieval weaponry and combat techniques, cars, motorcycles, computers and overclocking. Am a regular at nearly all metal concerts, so a metalhead by trade and by taste in music :D . now for my hobbies and the results i have achived so far, this one I really havent been able to verify, but to the best of my knowledge i currently hold a world record for having the fastest clockspeed on an opteron 165 utilizing air cooling, though have held world 3rd places in WPrime for some time in the last year, now i sohuld be in the top 10 but not that high, for only opteron 165's though. Allso practice axe throwing as a hobby, but no competitions for this activity here sadly, allso i suck quite badly at it.

Some pictures taken this year at hard rock laager i posted earlyer in this forum before noticing this thread.

After reading soooooooooo many replies here, I've made up my mind to introduce myself here

*I trust you Kaptains, however, as everyone can view this post, including those abusers who arn't members of this forum, I decided not to give so much personal details out. I've to apologise in advance for that*

Name: Peter Loo

Sex: I don't think I've to mention this here. Use your brain to figure that out

Born in Dec, 1991

Living in Shatin, Hong Kong

Race: Chinese (no flaming here please, I've got neither no choice on my race nor my skin colour, that out of bound for me)

Occupation: student

I love spending time on Net visiting forums,
dumping precious time on an addictive online game Runescape. (lol, that's for 10 years olds), discussing military history and tactices.

Very familiar with Atlantic War / Pacific War. Very deficient in the trench warfare.

Know quite a lot on explosives, notwithstanding the fact that i can't build an IED

I'm performing quite well in chemistry and English. (I thought that forigners speak English real quick, so I love speaking fast. However, this proves wrong later, of course)
HATES Chinese(the subject NOT race), really hates that. (are you a traitor? You love English while you hate Chinese)

I'm still young, so I won't be going long here, unlike you guys, who have got tons of experience for your bluffing purpose. (lol)

How I find subsim?
I learnt that SH2 is a great game in a forum, so I got myself a copy, and starts playing. In the game, I've faced many difficulity
(I've once set myself invulnerable and infinite torpedoes, sinking targets I see and got in sight. I thought that WWII torpedoes could only run straight, not knowing that these torpedoes were dated back to WWI and outclassed)
Thus, I've searched for info for my inquiries in Wikipedia. (that's strange), and I've found subsim

That's all and that's it. I hope that the "Chinese sailor 中国水兵" tag is avaliable for me everytime, as that's probably the best description on me.
