Well, I found SubSim back in the Silent Hunter 2 days (not that long ago!).
In the months before Silent Hunter 3 was announced Sub Sim was a mix of
modern Sub fans who had just got Dangerous waters and the World War Two
guys like my self who hadn't had a new sub game for a long time. That didn't
stop the Silent Hunter 2 community one bit tho. Patrol reports, multi-player
games, grand campaigns and a vibrant modding community as well as all the
usual forum banter at SubSim is what I remember best about the games.

Had SH2 then SH3 came out, not being as knowledgeable of Computers at the time, I bought SH3 and fed it in to the Computer. Well, it tried it's damm hardest to load and play a single mission and I could hear pings amongst the chaos and picture breaking up. The pings hooked me in and, after realising the specs weren't enough to run the game, I went out and purchased a Computer with enough specs at the time solely to play SH3. I only play SH3 and relevant derivatives/mods and Virtual Pool 3 which I am addicted to and blame Gizzmoe for this
:rotfl:
After playing SH3 for a while, started looking for more info and ended up finding Subsim with a little help from Drebbel.

Spat my coffee all over the keyboard there mel :o

Was tinking "Steve is bloody psychic!!" :hmm:

By way of explanation Steve.....I know nothing of RPG :nope:
It's the reference to Elric and the link to mel that astounds me
Nothing psychic about it. While I'm familiar with RPGs, and have played a few, they're really not my thing. I just kept reading his name and thinking "Elric of Melnibone...Melnibonian...he must be a fan"; so I had to ask.

Perfectly reasonable question Steve. I am a huge fan since I was a young kid back in Athens. Whenever I have the time I do play with my mates, or read RPG/Fantasy books. Over here in the UK I haven't found so many people familiar with the Elric Saga. If I'm not mistaken Moorcock's books are better known to North America than Europe. Nevertheless Elric Rules, although GWX is not far behind ;) :p

The good folks on the Torsk finally caught me on camera. I spend a majority of the time on the go and make it difficult for the historian to get a image!!! At any rate, I was caught repainting the forward engines (Lighting and Thunder) the proper color. For some stupid reason the engines were painted razzle dazzle blue. I guess that color was on sale that day. A face only a mother could love and even she is having a problem doing that :shifty:

Anyway, the thing I'm touching up is a air intake. One of two to feed air to one engine. I suspect my scrawny butt could get sucked up in there when the engine is at full throttle:o

Newly registered user, but I've been a long time lurker of the site (isn't that what submariners are best at?:)). I found SubSim back when I was playing SH2, and I think it's an awesome resource for folks with our interests. My name is Alvaro Radigales and I'm from Madrid, Spain.

My passion for military history lead me to get a degree in Modern History (so I probably won't be getting rich anytime soon!). I discovered submarine simulations thanks to Silent Hunter II while hunting for bargain bin titles. I loved it so much I did all I could to obtain every other submarine simulation out there and play it till my hands fell off.

Fortunately, I had glued my hands back in place by the time Silent Hunter III was released in Spain (yup, I preordered it!). I tried my luck at manual TDC, failed miserably, googled for tutorials and ended up here. Now I'm glad I sucked so badly at it! :D

My passion for submarine warfare grew rather quickly, and I ended up making it the subject of my research, in which I am now engaged.

As my research slowly creeps forward (rigged for silent running of course) I make some cash to pay bills and vices as an English and History teacher.

Here's a (fairly old) shot of my ugly mug that I use as an avatar in most forums and IM services.

How I found subsim?

I was sent here! LMAO. My older brother suggested I join subsim when I got into SH3 as he was on the ubi forums, we wanted to cover both bases see but he stopped going to Ubi and came here... anyhoo... When I got here, wow what an arrival how cool to be here and its wonderful. A top notch community, like all communities it has its village idiots. lol but thats a good thing adds to the colour.:rotfl:

Favourite Subsim

SH3. As if you didn't know. I played it, and got hooked, more or less played it as a dare more than anything my brother didn't feel I was "up to it" so had to prove him wrong, more I played the more I enjoyed then when my bro got GWX I got GWX never looked back.

Coolest subsim moment

Joining the GWX team. I wish I could put into words how cool it was to get an invite from Kpt. Lehmann to join the Grey Wolves. I was going to do the whole "I am not worthy but yes please" routine... but I thought, nah, I'll snatch his hand off with the invite! Can't tell you how amazing it felt to join Grey Wolves and to do whatever I could to help.

It was kind of daunting at first, but, it worked out so well and had nothing but respect and kudos from the team, and I did my best to give them the same in return. So its all cool, and I have had some awesome memories as a result of them. Thankyou very much guys and thanks for having me.

Bit about me

I'm just an ordinary person more or less. I miss my pet Iguana and still have not had the heart to replace her. I miss her dearly... would give anything to have her back. But what can you do?

I used to like smoking cigars of all things, and menthol cigarettes, started when I was 16. lol my defence was I only on weekends, which was true. I am now no longer smoking, after a few hiccups I kicked the habit, and feel good for it.

I am a bit of a healthy type person, I go to the gym and I tend to eat all the right foods, that is not to say I don't love a mcdonalds when I get it. Wow. I am so down on McD's but put a mc chicken sandwich before me and its gone! Tee Hee. Generally my weight tends to fluctuate up and down a bit. But well I work to keep it under control.

Thanks to a certain ferret I recently got into Aliens vs Predator 2 and love the online MP games. I am not a bad predator.

Computers! I love computers and learning to do stuff with them. And well all that kind of things... Except webcams... them I hate... they never do you justice!

I dont know what else to say. Oh yes... my philosiphy on life... The real measure of a "tough guy" is somebody who keeps getting back up, no matter how many times they get knocked down, they get back up until their opponent is no more. I heard that somehwere and I sort of try to live by it.

I collect virtually every board game I can get my hands on.

Favorite video games: City of Heroes, Dangerous Waters, Silent Hunter III, Harpoon3 ANW, Harpoon4 miniatures, Conquest of the Agean, Highway to the Reich, Neverwinter Nights.

How I Found Subsim: I worked at Staples in the business machines area. I spotted 688i Hunterkiller gold on the shelf for like $12 and snatched it up. A friend of mine worked on the USS San Juan and it was shortly after he had given me a grand tour of the submarine so I was VERY interested in subs at this point. The game hooked me like no other at the time.. so much so that I bought two copies so my roomate and I could play against each other. It was so cool to be able to take command of the sub that I had just toured with my buddy.
After my roomate decided that he couldn't stand 688i Hunterkiller (He was more of an action "shoot-em-up-arcade-explosions etc..." kind of player), I was unable to find online opponents for a long time. Then Sub Command arrived at our store for like $20 *YOINK !!!*. It was durring my online quest to find opponents for multiplayer that I stumbled upon Subsim. I've pretty much been lurking in the background all these years and I was shy about posting until this past year when I picked up Silent Hunter III and discovered the fantastic stories that can come out of it.

How did I find Subsim?
I dont remember

I think it was when I tried playing Dangerous Waters, and I was looking all over for tutorials and such. Subsim had a few for me to look at, but I didnt really play it. When I picked up Silent Hunter 3 last year, I came back for more help, but liked the look of the community, so I decided to join and stick around

What Games Do I play?
Besides SH3, alot. I love RPGs, Space Sims, Action, Adventure, and FPS. I played AVP2 for a number of years, and was very active in the clan scene, being both a member of [YSL], and later {RSC}, as probably the best Heavy Predator you'd ever fight with class weapons on :arrgh!:

Usually, when I get tired of SH3 for a while, I switch over to playing X3: Reunion. I guess after causing hell to an economy, I like to build up my wallet. If only it was real money :hmm:

Oh, and EVE Online, although I've been inactive for a while.

About Me
Lets see, I'm a college student, hoping to work my way back into a University in a few years. Currently dont have a specific career in mind, but I'm looking into Computer Forensics and Network Security. I love music, being a huge fan of Metal. Favorite band is without a doubt Tyr (http://www.tyr.net), although I listen to alot of other bands. Hell, I listen to nearly anything. A look at my computer will show anything from Classical, to Techno, to Black Metal. I'm a friendly guy, although I'm shy in real life. I read alot, although I dont really have any favorite authors, its usually whatever looks good. I read alot of Norse Mythology (i.e. the Eddas) and Icelandic Sagas though, my favorite saga so far is Egil's Saga (I still need to find Njal's Saga).

I'm both a nerd and a geek, through and through, and luckily, my girlfriend of nearly 2 years shares this with me, so it does make life alot easier. Other then that, I'm drawing a blank. No pictures, since I cant find any good ones.

My son took this pic tonight.

A quick voyage around Knipper (aka Peter):
Born in Aston, Birmingham (UK) 1951. Left school with no qualifications, joined BT (GPO it was then) as an apprentice telecoms engineer 1967. Became a hippy, took loads of drugs, went to rock festivals & gigs, near killed myself on a Triumph 6T Thunderbird at 19 while on acid, left BT 1976, did an Hons degree in Moral and Social Philosophy Kingston-on-Hull), 1979 went to live in South of France (Antibes area) working in caravan sites/bars, did some sign/boat writing. Returned UK circa 1982, worked as cartoonist in London, bought ZX81, learned hex, moved to Bath, worked in joinery shop. 1985 set up photo gallery/darkroom, met wife, stopped taking (most) drugs. 1987 became Bath community arts officer, 1989 got job as telecoms journalist, 1993 had son :D :D :D . 1996 went freelance for 8 years then got a job with a major technology publisher. Anyone interested in operational support systems for all-IP, next-generation telecoms networks? No, I thought not. Don't blame you either. It's tedious stuff, but it pays the bills. 2005 got married (same person - long engagement. You have to be sure about these things).

Found this forum 12 months ago via Google after buying SH2 and failing to get it to work (it kept crashing). Still didn't get it to work. tried sporradically to get it to work without success. Bought SH3, that didn't work either. Kept trying. Looking in here, I realised graphics card was a big issue. Bought a half-gig ATI something or other a couple of months ago and the rest, as they say, is history. Well, the sim is about history of course. I knew that. But you know what I mean.:D

Main interest is modern history, in particular the British in India (anyone read William Dalrymple?) and European history from mid-19th century to the present. WWI & II in particular. Also, the British involvement in Ireland, year dot to the present. I guess the common theme is imperialism/fascism. My father served all but the last bit of WWII at Biggin Hill, so I guess that's where the interest started.

After a few unfortunate experiences in chatrooms and BBS (my best mate ran off with a woman from Texas he met in pogo.com and a paedophile tried to groom me) Since then, I've been looking for a virtual table to put my feet under and I sincerely hope this is it. Signs are good, you folks seems kind, helpful and understanding, and of course we're all into subsimming.

Fave films & books are too diverse to list but anything slightly sleazy (Cabaret, Pink Flamingo's for example) or to do with modern history is fine by me.

I can be a bit irksome sometimes I know, I also suffer from foot and mouth disease on occasion, but I don't mean anything nasty by it. I just get carried away. The problem is with this medium, people can't see you laughing as you type, so sometimes they don't know you're joking. Anyhow I figure I'm going to be into subsimming for a considerable time to come and I would welcome your collective company for the duration. I hope it turns out to be mutual.

SINK 'EM ALL! :arrgh!:

not much to say about me. Im 18, spent a bit of time in the canadian military basically basic training and soldiers qualification before i left, then i got arrested and put on probation which slowed the partying wayyyyy down, which i have no complaints about. I have always been interested in submarines, U-Boats in particular, for as long as i can remember. I dont even remember how i found this site, but im here so thats all that matters :D I'm the last person that anyone would imagine playing a subsim, since i am a teenager that partys and wears all the baggy clothes and whatnot but i've managed to get a few people to say that it looks like a cool game. I have a great sense of humour and im very easy going. I'm not the the smartest in the school department so im going to try to get a welding apprenticeship sometime in the near future, but don't know if that will be my lifelong career choice yet. Thats pretty much all i can think of right now.

Forty years ago I spent my time protecting this ole country.

That's me on the bottom right in the first photo. USS Ethan Allen SSBN 608 (Blue)

We were surfaced having a little picnic off the Canary Island's after we had just launched (7) A-2 missiles
towards a Navy target range near the Windward Islands 2,500 miles down range.

We launched them one minute apart and all seven landed within fifty yards of the target.
We got the Presidential Unit Citation award for the feat, but we couldn't wear
the ribbon due to the (at that time) Top Secret operation.
See the 7-up flag behind me.

Im in a relationship with the greatest shortass the world has ever seen, my 4'11 italian dynamo, problem is she's gone back to the old country for a few months to visit rellies after she finished her degree.

I've always been into military hardware and history, well any history really, i love it. SH3 wasnt the first sim i played, but was the first sub sim i bought. I browsed this site a loot, but never joined, spent a lot more time at ubi forums, then made the switch when things took a turn i didnt like - i dun even remember what that was anymore.

I've had all sorts of jobs, a Juice bar for a few years, was at a pharmacy for a few years which i worked my way up at and ended up managing, I've worked for 2 different govt departments over a coupla years, I now work at an IT company managing 13k printers and copiers nationwide on my lonesome. I'm also a State level footy umpire, gunning for national level next year. Never had 1 job at a time, might call me a sucker for punishment. Oh im also now an army reservist, just another thing to add to my list :)

I'll pop up a photo shortly, when i get a half decent upload rate, but thats about all the relevent things i can think about:know:

After digging through some photos looking for some stuff I found these...

This picture was painted on the ground in front of our (1/508th) chow hall at Fort Kobbe in Panama. It was always under constant guard by some hidden NCO. If even a shadow of your boot fell upon this Icon a booming voice would come over the loudspeaker commanding you to "Drop, Push Earth, Front lean and rest, Kiss the Dirt..etc."

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/MakoStreak/RedDevil.jpg

After seeing the camo'd face of the soldier above I felt encourage to post my own. But since I was just another dogface paratrooper I figured I would pay homage to the greatest commander whom I have had the privilidge to serve under. My company commander C 1/508th lt abn. He was the kind of Captain you would follow into the very bowels of hell, just because we loved and respected him. I dont know where he is now but I often think of him. He was hard charging but cared about his men. Captain Kirk Davis.

The more I see posts from nikimcbee the more I believe he is just a dog

My information:
Age: Almost 20, in July
Location: Kansas City, MO
Bio:

I was always interested in world war 2, but never knew anything about the battle of atlantic, or, subarmines. It started around my birthday waaay back when SH2 was first released (I think I was about 13). I was shopping at Best Buy for a present with my Grandma, when I saw a kick-butt box cover for Silent Hunter 2. Interested I picked it up and got it for my birthday.

Returning home, I popped it into my computer and installed it and went to play. Nothing. I later realised my computer was too slow/ no video card, not enough memory or anything. I purchased a new computer (2 new ones since!) with my birthday money and reinstalled it and began playing it.

Never playing one before or knowing what I was doing, the first mission, the Polish Flotilla, i thought they would sail right into me. I used time compression and everything. But I never selected a speed or anything (I really didn't read into the manual). After about 5 minutes I gave up. I began reading the stories in the SH2 manual and became really interested, and in the very back of the manual was links to sh2fleet.com and subsim.com

I joined the Wolfpack League, and played and learned new things. Finally Destroyer Command came out, I got that and played it also. After another 6 months after that I was soon the Flotilla Commander for the 3rd flotilla of the WPL.

Things slowly dwindled down, and I became a full-time reader here. Around 2004 I began developing my own indie-subsim located at my website in my signature.

I play SH3 and Lord of the Rings online, but my heart now lies in subsims!

I can't wait until October to meet all you other subnuts!

I stumbled on the deep domain site as a result of Jim someone or anothers
silent hunter com site YEARS ago when orig SH came out.

signed up here just b4 or right when sh2 came out.

Was concerned about buying and getting involved in another german subsim after aod.
in the heyday of AOD, there were a number of websites that not
only used the swastika, but used the game to lead to and promote Neo Nazi ideals.
indeed id swear i remember DL'ing sumthing for the aod t21 upgrade that said it would read your puter to id if you were a jew...

Neal Stevens effectively pre empted all of this BS,:|\\ , "no swastika's!"
and instantly removied my concern of whether or not i was dealing with
sub simmers or neo nazi wackjobs.

thanks for that !

Quick life update without starting a new thread - the biggest challenge of my last couple of months came to results for me - and I just got news today that I've just been accepted into a PhD program I had been trying so hard to get into :D Seeing how I'm only 23 years old, that's a really cool and BIG deal for me. And they're giving me enough funding to live comfortably (by frugal-but-reasonable 20-something standards) while I do it

It's a Les Paul knockoff :p It has a (practically invisible) cosmetic defect, so it was quite cheap, and I had it tested out by my dad (professional guitarist etc.) before getting it.

I'm actually terrible at playing it so far. Partly cause I don't have time to learn properly, with all this other stuff I'm doing

Well done mate. As a wrinkly approaching 60 (but not speeding) I've discovered that when you get that 'YAY!' feeling, like you're on your way, things are falling into place and you can't wait to get stuck in, you're on the right road. You're doing what you should be doing, for your own and everyone else's benefit. The goal? Make a living at what you're good at. It sounds simple but it took me years to discover it, but maybe I'm just thick. :yep: If ever you get the chance, have a look at Personal Destinies: The Ethics of Individualism (pub Princeton Press), by Dr David Norton. That sums it up, albeit in a very philosophical way (he was my tutor when I did my PhD - Phil).

@Steed.
Not much advice I could give a man of your years mate except do what I do, put your drink on a side table, not next to your keyboard. My kb's end up smelling like a bar (before eventually packing up). Mind you, if you drink neat vodka when simming and you do happen to spill it on your kb, it has a cleansing effect. It's still a waste of good booze tho ;)

Thanks Knipper! :) I should like to read that, sometimes I do need that reassurance. For me "getting ahead" has always been difficult to wrap my mind around - never even mattered to me cause I've always been too busy chasing my own individual goals and interests. I do hope to teach though, if nothing else - I feel like it's a debt to all the great teachers that got me this far!
Well, the good news - I've already accepted the admission offer and I seem to be on track to defend my Masters thesis by June :D

This is actually a Armour Collection diecast metal 1/78 scale. It was painted like that from the factory. I had read somewhere the often the Luftwaffe would just paint over what was already on the plane depending on gruppe, where they were flying and the camo used for the weather at the particular time they were flying. So, Armour who was located in Italy and subsequently purchased by Franklin Mint painted their 109 and 190 as if it was in the war and not factory fresh. They looked for historical accuracy when painting their models.

That's weird. Never seen that before. I've seen planes that have had the spot painted with a BG colour and then painted with the numbers & letters. I mean, how could someone from the flight identify a plane that carries that kind of markings on top of eachother. Dont want to break your balls here but I've never seen that.

I did not either and I question it when I got the thing. All the others where painted the same. So I did not pay attention to it. Then it came clear when I read about it. It is in one of my books. I will attempt to find it again. But, yes, I thought it was strange but Armour/Franklin Mint will paint a model of a the real plane as it sits so they referenced it somewhere. I might be able to see under the wing to find out who's plane with was. Others in my collection such as my Pappy Boyington Corsair is painted as he had it, etc.

For those interested in Dowly and my discussion on the strange marking for BF109 in my picture....here is the answer:

http://books.google.com/books?id=IzJUlCpm4zMC&pg=PA67&lpg=PA67&dq=gruppe+kj+gu+bf+109&source=web&ots=gy29pOleUY&sig=W2iakv5FdH4tFgBAJ5fPdAFxAb0&hl=en

Exact same markings as my model and apparently a Erich Hartmann plane! 15 kills as noted on the tail in the picture and my model has the same. Read the writing on the left hand side. It explains the wiggly line over the yellow band that is over the GU! History once again reveals itself!

Congrats, mate!! You are right, that is a HUGE deal!! Excellent!:up::up::up::up:

pasting a copy of my general hard-typed description...

Things went badly I am out of action for a while/ I just spent 3 days in hospital, 2 of them hooked up on IV and 3 hours in ortho surgery. I am on a cocktail of painkillers, and my arm has 2 huge bolts through the elbow, steel plates connecting them to armbones on both sides, a large amount of wire holding broken-off pieces of my left elbow together. Which is to say my elbow is now almost completely titanium. All of that was done through a 6" lengthwise and 3" lateral incisions that are now held together with a ton of staples and will leave huge scars. Hopefully everything will go fine from this point on but there is a risk I could regain only partial use of my elbow. however all 3 major nerves going through my arm are undamaged and my hand will be okay. I can move and feel it just fine, but only up to the point where my forearm muscles are only partally needed - some of those are really screwed up at the moment. And typing with my right hand aint much fun right now either, s o I'll stop.

unless I figure out a good voice to text program, consider me out of the game. Using the mouse is easy for me but keyboard is a real strain.

My father in the early '70s was a semi-pro dirtbike racer in the Yucaipa, California area, riding a 125cc Rickman Matisse. He was a really good rider, getting his name and picture in the motorcycle mags of the day back then (Motorcycle News? - can't recall right now; I'd have to look it up in his scrapbook). When I was growing up I always loved seeing the pictures hanging in the garage of him kicking up the dirt on the turns in the racetrack. He got me into riding quads while I was growing up, but dirt-bike racing was never my thing. :-?

:rotfl:

My stepmother once paced me on mine - a whopping 30 mph cranked to the max. It had a four-speed gearbox with an automatic clutch. I found out that if I put it in first gear and held my foot down it wouldn't engage. I would rev it up all the way and then let my foot go, and it would wheelie all the way over. I got so I could show off by doing a wheelie and landing standing on my feet holding the bike vertically on its rear wheel. I once did it with a friend on the back and he landed on his butt. He was laughing, though, so no harm done.

I finally broke the gearbox pulling that stunt, and my dad made me take it apart and fix it. I've hated mechanical things ever since.

I liked riding so much that when my learner's permit expired after six months, rather than go for my license I just renewed the permit.

It was so light that if the entrance to a parking lot was around the corner I would just pick it up and carry it five feet to the lot.

It was also so weak that with my friend on the back it wouldn't climb a hill, so we would both get off and walk, and with the bike idling I would just hold it upright and it did its own pushing.

Mine had a problem with the mirrors coming loose. I ignored it and just pushed them back into place. One day a car stopped in front of me and I wasn't paying attention. With inches to spare I dodged between the car and the curb. The mirror slapped the car, and to my chagrin I found that my dad had gotten tired of it and cinched them down real good. The handlebars snapped sideways and dumped me on the grass.

Even though it was so tiny I used to argue that it was in no way a scooter: "See those wheels? That is a real motorcycle!"

Thanks for reminding me of all that.:sunny:

Aww nice cat :D

A belated thank you for the birthday greetings - I haven't been on much, still taking it easy. An update on my arm:

Here's my nice new war scar :|\\

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y122/Otohiko/stuff/otoscar.jpg

I was originally wrong about my incisions. I do have two, but one is tiny - you can see it as the dot on the far left - it was just big enough to put a screw through apparently. Ironically it's the one that hurts like a doubleplus ungood thingy when I move my elbow.

And yea, it's bent towards, fortunately they put it back together the right way . It is also bit swollen. Physiotherapist says it's about an inch wider in circumference than it should be, but that's a normal thing and will get treated soon. Without pain relief, my elbow can move from 80 degrees at most bent to 25 degrees most straightened. With some physio treatment (electricity etc.), it's already a lot more, so they say I should get back more than 90% of the function in it.

Amusingly enough, one of the bones I broke is the humerus, and it's the one that feels funny when I bend it. Ha ha

Getting there, and soon I hope!

Yeah, he totally got in a bar fight and slashed 8 truckers with a broken beer bottle... jumped over the counter and attacked the bar tender with his fists before a huge brawl broke out and over a dozen people were injured and slashed with sharp objects... some guy ran up and sliced his arm. That's definitely what happened.:yep:

Besides working on the Torsk which the pay is, well, nothing....I transport military material as a agent for Landstar so I can eat. The following are pictures of one of my contractor's trucks who do the transporting. This is one of my favorite trucks to send into military bases. This truck also went to Walter Reed Army Hospital for the opening of the new wing. The mural on the side is the son of the husband and wife team. The other is his friend. Both were in Iraq but home now.
