That is a HUGE family, Kapitan. HUGE!
My name is Kiwi, I live in New Zealand. I plan to join the police, RNZN, RNZAF or other govt. department after uni. I am 21...or so they say.
Also, I'll give you a hand with that research, Kapitan. I have a very big interest in the Chinese navy myself. Am heading to Hong Kong hopefully next so I'll get quite a few pics, if not a set of plans of anything I can find. :arrgh!:

Name: Jason
About me:
Born in southern California and then later moved to the central coast. I have traveled all around the country, mainly going to biker rallys such as Sturgis, Reno, Laughlin, Hollister, etc...
I bounced from school to school and didn't get settled down until 5th grade. That didn't last that long either. My true passion is in cars and racing. I grew up around Chevys and small blocks. Drag racing, dirt track racing, flat track racing, circle track racing, you name it, I love it! I currently own a 1987 Camaro and spend all my money making it go faster.
Aside from racing though, I am an avid reader and love history. I am the kind of person that tries to know a little about everything and a lot about nothing. I also love flying. I have taken an introductory course already and I aim to get my license. It is kind of funny, even though I have always loved flying, I had never flown in a plane until a few months ago, during my introductory course! I told them about my flight sims and they let me take off and fly to my house unassisted. My flight instructor had to set her down for me though! (Although I am pretty sure I had it covered!)
It is strange too, I had always hated the navy and anything to do with boats. I always hated large bodies of water most of all! That all changed a bit lately though, I have taken a great interest in subs and naval warfare. Can't get enough of it lately! I think that the only reason I didn't like anything to do with water in the first place was a childhood thing... Better not go there! lol
Oh yeah, what am I going to do in my future? No idea! I have searched hard and deep and only know what I am not going to do. I am not going to work in an office. I am not going to do anything that I find boring. I could not stand any 9-5 job! (Am I in trouble here or what?)
Here is what I see as a possible future: Become a commercial pilot, join the military, find someone to sponsor me in circle track racing, build race engines, start an autobody shop, run my own business, (that is what I am currently doing now to support my car!) or last but not least: become a bum and travel America.
That's all I gotta say about that. :hmm:

When I was young (like Kapitain) I thought cruising through the ocean at 400 plus feet at ultra-quite in trail of a cold war enemy SSBN was stressful.
Doesn't even compare with keeping up with my three sons (ages 6,7,&11).

About me:
-BA Linguistics and Applied Language studies. Will be an MA student as of fall.
-born in Leningrad, USSR, 10/04/1984, to a family of a librarian and a musician (lower-class intellegentsia represent :P ). We were and are dirt-poor, and that doesn't take away from my enjoyment of life. Older of two children, although I had a cousin who lived with us and became like a sister to me.
-learned to read by age 2, could do relatively complicated math in my head before age 6; but due to a psychologist classifying me as 'lacking aptitude for languages', placed in a "slow" class at school. They later realized the mistake when I became the school's best student in German. For over 3 years, I sat in the back of the class picking my nose and sneering at the teacher. This developed my disregard and distrust in authority, and as I grew up, I would become increasingly vocal in this, frequently clashing with my teachers and superiors. I became a sort of political issue at my school, and despite some teachers' utter hatred for me - one of its top 3 students.
-left Russia and moved to Canada at age 14, due to parents' problems with finding work, and also due to growing concerns over my impending conscript service in the Russian army. Never took any English as Second Language classes and became fully proficient in English within a year.
-started developing my interest in simulations and military history, in part to aid my study of language (although I had the interests before). By age 15, I was a certified flight sim nut. :arrgh!:
-settled down and lost (most of) my arrogant attitude, lost interest in technical subjects and became more interested in the study of language. Enrolled in a linguistics program at university.
-moved to Ottawa area in mid-2004. Now studying at Carleton University while living on the Quebec side of the river (Aylmer).

I grew up living with my grandmother in the nicer section of the city (Rochester) until she died. I then moved in with my dad who lived by the airport. We lived there for several years (until I graduated in 2002) then the county bought out the land and we moved to East Rochester.
Back in school I attended a vocational course for the last three years where I learned some computer programming (C++, VB) and met a bunch of my friends but forgot most of what I learned. We did have the honor of literally driving our teacher crazy a few months in to your third year, luckily we got a better teacher who loved WWII aircraft and the last half of the school year was a blast (the last two weeks of school he let the entire class play Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight on the class’s LAN, me and John kicked ass with the Dark Side  ).
I got a computer around 2000 and started playing old sims like Jane’s Fighters Anthology and Tom Clancy’s SSN. Eventually I got a better machine and discovered Sub Command on the shelf at Wal-Mart and started reading everything I could about submarines. A year or so latter I got an Internet connection and ended up here.

CCIP, are you at U of O? My father works there...
I'm 22.
Born in the Québec half of the Ottawa valley, land of the civil servants / zombies and 2AM last calls. Went to High School, International program and all that. Retained enough spanish to ask for a beer (And eventually to tell a spanish welder not to weld just yet.) Graduated middle of the class. I guess you could say I got into flight sims around 10 years old.
Went to CEGEP in Human Science (Individual and Institution, or something). The fact that I can't remember the name of the program I was stuck in for two year should clue you in as to my interest. Discovered that you could watch Buffy DVDs in the cafeterias, on a laptop. Flunked out of socio. Passed developmental psych and modern history on my good charm, and on a wonderful piece of neo-communist bull****. I guess you could say that the first year of CEGEP was 688(i), and the second one was a mix of SC and SHII.
Realised I wasn't in the right place. After two years - I'm a slow guy. Transferred to the nautical science program, halfway accross the province. Screw that, three quarter of the way accross, where it's windy and the sun shines three hours a day. When it shines. Didn't have any experience or familly involved in anyway in shipping. Am halfway through the program.
It's exam season and my brain is numb.
CCIP, are you at U of O? My father works there...
No, Carleton. They had slightly milder scholarship requirements, and my program is kinda un-prestigeous anywhere. I'm considering U of O as a second option for my MA, though, but I'd rather stick with the profs I know at Carleton now.
It's exam season and my brain is numb.
Heh, whose isn't :P

Name: Let's just call me Marhkimov.
Age: 19
About me:
I grew up in California. For as long as I can remember, I adored airplanes. When I was a kid, all I used to do was draw airplanes. One after the other: airplanes, airplanes, airplanes. Right now, I don't love airplanes as much as I used to, but I still think that they are cool.
Then when I got a little older, my dad got MS Flight Simulator 98 for my birthday. That was fun. I still have fond memories of trying to take off and land from Meigs field in Chicago.
Then with the advent of newer and faster computers, I bought MS Combat Flight Simulator 2. I loved that game, as it got me hooked to the world of online modding. I would always download new airplanes and just fly. It was so fun. I remember flying B-52's and B-36's. Those were the days... Then I went to CFS3, IL2, and IL2FBAces. I also played a lot of Madden and NHL on the PS2.
But more recently in my life, I am a ballroom dancer. I know, that's very atypical. An airplane dude that likes to dance? But you know what? It's funny how life presents you with these twists and turns... That's what makes life special.
I've been dancing ever since I was 17, and it is now my lifelong passion. It's an amazing and graceful sport, and one day I hope to be #1 dancer in the world.
In my freetime, I am a college student at a junior college. I have not a clue what I want to major in, but not surprisingly my heart wants me to be a dance instructor. I also play SH3 and do a lot of skinning/modding. And I hang around in the subsim forums too much... Thank you subsim. :D

Okay, but this is the last time. I've answered several of these, but since this one is a sticky I'm willing to do it again.
Name: Steve Bradfield
Age: Next April the 8th I'll be 56.
U.S. Navy service: 1968-1970, USS Brinkley Bass (DD-887); and yes, I actually am an official combat veteran.
Born in Dallas, Texas, 1950. Moved to Los Angeles with my family in 1952. Moved to Utah right out of the navy, so I've been here almost 35 years.
I've played music all my life, but never made a decent living at it, much less a fortune. I have a friend who designs board games for fun, and I do artwork for him, but so far we haven't sold anything. I've been working on my own tabletop miniatures ship game for ten years now, and don't seem do get any closer to finishing it. I've spent most of my life working in warehouses, but I'm currently (yet again) "between positions", as they say.
I've been divorced for more than 20 years, after having been married for 11, and have two lovely daughters, ages 26 and 23 (and they're both taken already, so don't ask).
If you want to know any more than that, you'll have to buy me lunch.

Got a question for Sailor Steve. I knew a friend who served aboard the Brinkley Bass, although his name escapes me. He said that whenever the Boatswain's Mates would get PO'd at the First Lieutenant aboard her, they would paint over the B's on the ships hull, rendering USS Brinkley Bass to USS Rinkley Ass. Can you confirm if this story is true?

Purpose of this Post: you tell me :)
What is the point of life? "Well, it's nothing very special. Uh, try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations. And, finally, here are some completely gratuitous pictures of penises to annoy the censors and to hopefully spark some sort of controversy, which, it seems, is the only way, these days, to get the jaded, video-sated public off their ******** ar$e$ and back in the sodding cinema. Family entertainment? Bollocks. What they want is filth: people doing things to each other with chainsaws during tupperware parties, babysitters being stabbed with knitting needles by gay presidential candidates, vigilante groups strangling chickens, armed bands of theatre critics exterminating mutant goats. Where's the fun in pictures? Oh, well, there we are. Here's the theme music. Goodnight."

I share my birthday with Sailor Steve.
I was firefighter for short time, mainly to avoid the boring life of a conscripted italian soldier late in the seventy.
My interest for submarines, simulations and strategical games started about ten years later.
I prefer woods and mountains to sea; trekking, bike and photography when outside, tons of books and the good old Aces of the Deep when at home (and allowed by my wife).

Yep, the family went 0 for 3 during the war. Tough time for them. All three were in the Air Corps. I started with the video game Call of Duty, and it went from there. I read and watched BoB, got the Combat Flight Simulators, Silent Hunters, Medal of Honors, any WWII game you can think of. My bookshelf is about 75% WWII. Anyway, next person....

As you may know, we have a Special Project in the works. One of the things I am doing is compiling a roster of people who have been with Subsim since the Early Times. Of course, I have Bill, John, Drebbel, and a few others listed as the Moses group. I have a short list of other legacy players, some who have not been seen in a while (Frank, Jason), some who are still around. To cross check my list, I invite you to post here.
How did you learn about Subsim?
When did you first visit?
What do you recall about Subsim upon your first vist? (Some article, some game, maybe some forum topic, etc.)
What type of forum was Subsim using at the time? (Matt's BBS, EZBoard, phpBB 1.44, etc)
What was your name or Subsim nickname then? Same as now or something else?
Anything else you would like to mention (nostalgic times, people, events in the Subsim community):
Try to be as accurate as you can, thanks. This will be part of the SP.

I visited the forum the first time roughly half a year before Sub Command came out. I do not remember the exact date. Must have been 1999, maybe, or 2000? I was busy with Jane'S 688i, had questions, and stumbled over the place. From there, I received some well-meaning emails by someone, which did not help at all, unfortunately. He finally said (wanting to send me back to the forum where we had met): "Ask Neal about it." And I replied something like: "Who is this Neal, and where can I find him?" :rotfl: Half a year later when sub command came out, I became a fulltime member. My nickname always has been Skybird, I think, with the short intermezzo when The Other showed up for some weeks  Ouh, and it was called "Neal'S place" back in those times, wasn't it? My first impression was that people there were a little bit eccentric...

Whoa! Make me think this early in the week? Ouch!
Let's see, my profile shows Sept 2002 as a member, but I know it was a little earlier than that, say late 2001, early 2002. I received a copy of SC before Xmas 2001 and found the site sometime after while doing a google search on submarine sims. I seem to recall having to re-register in 2002 after a site upgrade.
I keep coming back due to the subject matter and the good company. I kept mostly to the SC board for awhile, then discovered the General Topics forum fun too.
Same name the whole time.
For me the story is very similar to Skybirds, first time I visited this place was around the realese of Sub Command. If I remeber right I think I found out about Subsim.com through a search engine. Prior to this account "Polak" I had two other accounts, "NAVY SEAL" and "FORMOZA". But I dont think I ever wrote any posts with those accounts(maybe 1 or 2 post with "NS").
A funny thing is that I found my old account "FORMOZA" a couple of days ago, took me a while to figure out the password.:smug: Obviously I dont use that account so it can be deleted.
A funny thing in the past was when I read and responded to some posts made by the subsim oldguard (Skybird, Drebbel, etc..) my posts where sometimes a bit to "personal" as if I had know them for a long time :D("Polak" has only been around here for about a year). I am sorry for the personal posts gentelmen, must have been strange when a guy that only had been member for 2 weeks and with post count of 10 wrote to you as if he had known you for ages. ;)

I learned about Subsim from links to reviews (e.g. from SimHQ which I read regularly).
I first visited it ages ago, but only to read that or other review. Then I came here to see the SHIII review, and looked at the forums here. Then I was seeing links to the SHIII forum in the Ubi SHIII forums.
I actually lurked for a while here, studying the crowd and reading SHIII-related items with interest. I finally surfaced in the mod forum, and haven't shut up since :88)
So, actually, I haven't been on here for all that long - just over a year - but I've come to see Subsim as an excellent community. For me, of course, it's still mainly a sort of centre-of-gravity for the SHIII commnity, but I've come to realize that it's much more than that.
Nostalgic times? It was when the "SH3 Mod Team" forum was active and the Operations/Real U-boat team was together and would gather there - Egan, Beery, Nico, Jace, Observer, jason; and then, towards the end of its activity, how we'd successfully uncovered the X1 scam. Community action at its finest.

Hmm I think I'm visiting here regularly since I have internet, which would be since around 1999. First time I got here when searching for the expansion disk for AoD, or the 1.31 patch for SH1 (and how to make it work with the german version), I don't know exactly really but I think it was about that time. I can still remember that forum, where you had thread trees. I've been more of a lurker around here tho.
My first thread was about the SH1 1.31patch at SSI's site being a corrupted file.
A little more info:
Same nickname I'm using now
I guess that forum I'm mentioning above would be Matts BBS?
I lurked without signing up since...oh...probably 2001ish, then took the plunge and signed up in 2002. Here's the link to my first post :D

First learned about subsim from RickCSniper---but i think it was before he had that name.
I recall the chatroom-Anyone up for a hunt?
Believe it was Matt's BBS
I wasn't registered -- just watched and read. The atmosphere of the forum is what kept me coming back. Seemed to be alot of respect and integrity with the way everyone treated each other. Something not found often on the internet in my experience.
It still keeps me here.
nostalgic times....hmmm... almost too many to mention. WPL radio is tops on my list... so many great ppl......including the yahoo crew (http://www.sharkscage.com/kp/images/TheKPHighway.jpeg).

I came here first around spring of '02 after someone (think it might have been Ramius or Xabba) pointed me here from a basically dead Sub Command forum I stumbled on. The first time I was here I remember a bunch of posts about the new RN subs and a new Typhoon SSBN for SCX, there was a version of I think the Upholder SSK with an SCX logo on the rudder as a little joke. Then for about a year I didn't have an Internet connection (Until June of '03), I then came back and have been on the board almost every day since.
Similar to others, I started visiting around the time Sub Command came out, fairly sporadic to start with, then more frequently over the last year or two - signing up in the lead-up to the release of SHIII. Because of my irregular use I can't really remember many details of the early days I'm afraid.

I bought SHII off the shelf and ran into immediate problems with crashing. after reloading and experimenting for several months I finally realized there must be someone who knows how to fix it. A forum search brought me here, where I learned of the official patch and mods which not only fixed the problem but actually made the game fun to play.
I'm pretty sure my profile date is right, and the first thing I noticed was how many people there were here who were willing and able to help, to mod and to have a good time. A lot of the faces have changed, but those characteristics haven't.
I used to post in other forums under my real name; I created the 'Sailor Steve' persona specifically for SubSim.
Nostalgia? People? Events? I will never forget the infamous 'Drebbel Trial', while we were waiting for SHIII.

I first heard about Subsim.com way back in 1998, when I was looking for tips for the Commander's Edition of Silent Hunter, which I had bought a few days before. The first article I can remember reading was an interview with Mike Jones, and the first file I downloaded was the 1.1 patch for 688(I). I remember seeing the first screenshots for SHII back in 1998, and being glad that we'd recently updated our computer. Great, I have enough RAM to play this new sub game that's coming out!
Anyway, I remember signing the "fix the 688(I) campaign" petition, and writing a message on the board with a few suggestions. That was back when the board was an open system, and I can't remember my nickname.
I closely followed the developments of SHII and SC day by day in 2001, and was dissapointed that I didn't get SC as a christmas gift in 2001. I got SHII instead, and the first thing I did was download new menu backdrops. After that, things get a little murky. The new board system arrived, and I registered as "wasserbomb". I posted about 20 times under that name, but lost my password and pretty much abandoned the boards. I mostly remember the big fuss over Kraut before he got banned.
In February 2005 I registered again under my current nickname. My best memory of the past 16 months was learning how to run the original SH under XP.:D I don't post that often, but I read the board every day, and I'm glad there are plenty of people out there that share my interests. Oh, and I finally have a place to put my book reviews!
Joined Subsim / WPL several months before SHII was released..
I'm talkin WAY back.. There was even this weirdo Texan as BdU of WPL then!

I found out about subim in late 2004 I was looking for mods for Silent hunter 2:up:
I discovered this site when I bought subcommand and signed up straight away.I think it was using the old style board at the time and I was using a dial-up connection in the local library to read it.I was attracted to the site because it offered tips on how to play the SC game.My original name was Cornwallis( a name I still use on a few other sites)but I changed to Linton to honour a deceased RN submarine captain and VC holder. We were born in the same town.I play SC when I can and have never really got into DW or played mp across the net.I think SCX was as good as we will see for a while until DW goes multi-platform though I wish a Lami project could have been written for SC.I have not even got around to playing any of the akula missions in SC.
This site really makes the game live by injecting a lot of rl into the game and also background into the game design.
I try and look at it daily and I have read it in places as far apart as Cuba and the Maldives.
I started to read the forum back in 1999, was one of the Fix my 688 Campain petitioners. (Willem Peschier)
http://www.subsim.com/ssr/fixmy688.html
Pretty much the same story here, had picked up SHII and DC and was looking for some info as I was already a flightsimmer and figured there must be a place for subs and naval stuff. IIRC, SHII had subsim listed somewhere in the credits...well Neal's name was there. :know:

2000 i actually registered with Subsim, yet i wasn't in here often was hard at work at the time so only popped in very rarely. Then was absent for probably 8months or so and the next time i went on around 2005 i forgot my old username and password so re-registered as kiwi_2005. Now im addicted to this forum:arrgh!:
EDIT:
Ooops didnt read all your questions neal: so here is what i can remeber which isn't much:
How did you learn about Subsim? - I think while looking for SH2 sites i stumbled across subsim
When did you first visit? - 2000
What do you recall about Subsim upon your first vist? (Some article, some game, maybe some forum topic, etc.) Silent Hunter I & II
What type of forum was Subsim using at the time? (Matt's BBS, EZBoard, phpBB 1.44, etc) - Can't remember.
What was your name or Subsim nickname then? Same as now or something else? - That i can't remeber old one
Anything else you would like to mention (nostalgic times, people, events in the Subsim community): Yep i have a real bad memory :P
Takeda Shingen
05-30-06, 06:53 PM
I first joined SubSim in early (February-March) 2001. SubSim was still on the EZ Board system (I think I remember people telling me that it was relatively new at the time). I was looking for information regarding Janes 688(i), and stumbled across the Fix My 688(i) pettition. I rarely posted in those days, but I had read about the upcoming Silent Hunter 2, and saw that the Wolfpack League was starting up, and, as Neal knows, I became heavily involved in that project.
My nickname has always been Takeda Shingen (Tak for short). My earliest friends were primarily in the WPL circut, namely PirateGhost, Frank, Sharkstooth, RickCSniper, DeerhunterUK, zzsteven, King (have not seen him for ages) and later Nemesis and TimmyG00 (who was instrumental in kicking off Sub Command Headquarters).
As it became clear that SH2 was not the sim that we were hoping for, my attention was drawn back to the SubSim forums proper, where I have stayed since that time. Admittedly, I do enjoy conversing with many of the members, most especially Skybird, TteFaboB, Oberon, Steed, TLAM, and many others. It remains the only internet forum to which I belong.

Similar as with Skybird. I read an early preview about Subcommand and decided to go check the web and see what I can fid about that cool new subsim. Somehow I wound up here. After 9/11 i lay low for quite some time because the atmosphere here became somewhat... unpleasant. Most of the time I only lurk around here and read what you people post, but every once in a while I post.
How did you learn about Subsim?
Some search engine I guess.
When did you first visit?
Hard to tell, it was way before SC came out, though.
What do you recall about Subsim upon your first vist? (Some article, some game, maybe some forum topic, etc.)
Not much, really. There were several veeery annoying people on the "general" section, though. One had a wierd avatar with a man with some kind of hood on, i seem to remember.
What type of forum was Subsim using at the time? (Matt's BBS, EZBoard, phpBB 1.44, etc)
EZBoard I think, but i am not sure. This forum here is the third version of subsim for me I think.
What was your name or Subsim nickname then? Same as now or something else?
Always have been werauchimmer
Anything else you would like to mention
No, I already did that i think.

Remember that for people using the Hazlazblue theme you text is totally unvisble. :-? White text on a whitish background is not a good idea in these forums, just as it was not in the old forum.
:sunny:
First heard about Subsim.com when looking for info on silent hunter 2, sometime early in 2003. I spent a couple of months lurking before I decided to register for keeps ;)
I have to say, that although my intial interest was from a gaming point of view, I seem to spend more time in GD than anywhere else... especially since I don't have SHIII installed anymore :(
Googled for SHII and subsim was practically top of the list, if memory serves..
I remember folks being friendly and welcoming to a n00b looking for SHII mods hehe
Couldn't tell you what software the forum was using... er, it was black lol
I have always had the same username here (and a few other sites also)
Kinda feels like home here, bit like an old comfortable shoe, but one which has been re-soled recently
One thing I'm especially glad of:
the 'submit' & 'preview post' buttons have not moved... with all the different forum software out there I'm very used to 'submit' being on the left and 'preview post' on the right; the times I have posted when I wanted to preview when using other forums! at least here I can feel safe that my familiarity with the board will not show me up as a fool :rotfl:

My story is quite similar to many others here whose path to Subsim seems to be thanks to the nuke subsim Sub Command. I joined in I around September 2002 having lurked at the forums for about 6 months previously. I'm pretty sure that I stumbled across Subsim via the SimHQ website. It was probably as a result of a link in the SimHQ news section to a review or something like that. Anyway I have been a member ever since and it is the only real forum that I visit regularly.
I've been here since sometime in '97. 688 was what most of the posts were about at the time. At the time I had dusted off a copy of the old DOS game Seawolf. I had never beaten the last mission, and while looking for hints, came across Subsim on the Internet. Wild Bill told me to stop using my torps in high speed mode, and that was what I needed.
I posted anonymously for years, until Sixpack called me out in a post in 2002. That era was my Subsim heyday, sparring with Kraut/Akula971 and Sixpack, I posted quite a bit. I don't post that much anymore, but I usually visit every day to check out what's going on. Damn, It's getting close to the 10 year mark for me.

I first came to Subsim,in January of 2002,after joining the WPL the previous month.
The thing I recall most from that first visit was all the naval-related news stories on the frontpage.
I believe it was the EZboard forum.
What I remember the most is the people that I've talked to over the years through the Subsim community.
I have fond memories of some of Das' SH2/DC 12-20 player bash missions. One mission in particular immediately comes to mind, which involved a pink sub,well-placed depth charges, red high-heeled women's shoes,a catastrophic hull breach, spuds and a potato peeler.:shifty:

I posted anonymously for years, until Sixpack called me out in a post in 2002. That era was my Subsim heyday, sparring with Kraut/Akula971 and Sixpack, I posted quite a bit. I don't post that much anymore, but I usually visit every day to check out what's going on. Damn, It's getting close to the 10 year mark for me.
S!
We sure had our load of fun back in the old days  Vague memories still make me smile. Too bad there aint an archieve with those posts. I am sure the BDU has logged all of it tho'. But then again, my demotion (in disguise) by Neal would then again bcome public. So forgetaboutit.
I havent been playin' much on the puter for a while. I miss SH3 though. Too busy with various things. Time pressure sure is a she-dog.
Anyway, to answer Neal's question. I think I initially came here in 2001 (?) to check for news on the release date of SH2, expressing classic 'over the top' desparation in my first mail. Btw, Ive been playing SH1 all the while without subsim.com, can you believe it ? :-(
Cheers.

It was still the EZ board forum.
Always the same nickname.
A lot of the people who were here when I started have now gone...ie Kennebec, Oleg, Thomasew, Tekaha....good times with good people...
oh and Akula971 and Kraut, were they the same person or just bum chums who played tag team on the forum. They used to pee me off royally, more spam than Kapitan.

I was first introduced to subsim by a friend. Once I saw Neal's firm, fair manner with the ner-do-wells I was hooked....

Okay...bad drawings aside....serious mode. :ping:
I first learned about the subsim forum through the web address on the back pages of the old Silent Hunter 2 manual.
I first visited in October of 2001...I believe I signed on in November of that year. Seems so long ago sonny...
What I most recall most then were the post 9/11 discussions...and a lot of carping over broken or unfufilled SH2 features like silent running, canned campaign, low screen resolution, evil corporate Ubisoft. This was back in the EZ Board daze.
Have always been Torplexed...although it seemed a lame choice at the time. Mebbe someday I'll change my name to AbbaFan 2.
Favorite memories...Drebbel in the dock. Sailor Steve doing his best Perry Mason to spring him....Neal and Co. actually enjoying the strange cartoons....Wondering how come all these continental Europeans communicate better in English than I do?
Least favorite memory....Akula's 800 pixel wide signature images...stacked one atop the other.
More good memories than bad.
As you may know, we have a Special Project in the works. One of the things I am doing is compiling a roster of people who have been with Subsim since the Early Times. Well it must have been back in the day...I think it was about 2 years before SH2 was released...way before the days of WPL. Thats makes it around 1999.
I cant remember how I stubbled upon this site, but I fairly certain I was looking for the SH1 patches or news about SH2. Ones of these.
I think it was a phpbb board but cant remember. I do remember that the first WPL boards were EZBoards.
My nick has allways been McBeck :D
People...ohh man...during the WPL days theres tons , but just a few would be Drebbel, Shargie, Deerhunter and of cource good ol Torplexed. His cartoons really made a difference!!! There were TONS of great people!

How did I learn about Subsim?
After playing Silent Service II and Silent Hunter I was very interested in Gato's and wanted to check RC models (32rd Paralell to be exactly), I found subsim.com and used it as a reference. Must have been in 1999 or 2000. After a while I started to check the news section, since 2002 on an almost daily basis. Combined with a good memory that gave me a great data base of maritime information.
I followed the long and winding road to SH II on subsim.com and enjoyed the Vickers download and the Project Messerwetter.
Mind you, at that time I never posted, I was not a forum guy, just visited the site regulary.
Then I saw the announcement of SH III and followed the long and winding road to that game. I was impressed by the preview of Drebbel in the Fall of 2004 and decided to send that fellow Dutchy a compliment by e-mail. He responded graciously and asked me if I ever posted on the forum. "Nah, nothing for me," I replied But Drebbel didn't take 'Nah' for an answer and convinced me with the zeal of a Jehova Witness that the subsim forums were real fun. As an Old Year's resolution I joined the Syber Service on December 31st, 2004.
Guess what, within a month I found the forums irresistedly attractive... I was definitely hooked.
The rest of the story is Present.

I found out about Subsim from the SH2 manual. I didn't join the forum, but I did download some mods. I remember I even contributed some money so I could download the mod that changed SH2 to US subs in the Pacific.
It was only after getting SH3 that I joined the forum. Even then I think I only posted a couple of times. It's only been in the last few months that I've posted more and tried to join in. I think that's because I wasn't completely sure about it at first, but I've found it's a friendly enough place...so far anyway.
One thing I would like to mention is the patience shown to newcomers who ask the same questions over and over again. I used to be one and I now try to show the same helpfulness and and respect that I received.

I was a regular poster at Subsim when I got a PM from Neal asking if I'd be interested in being part of a core group to plan and start a new site which became the WPL. That was (I think) about 8 months before the SHII release date which then got pushed back. I remember being the 4th or 5th poster at the WPL and the post was just a simple..."Reporting in"
We debated and voted on things like whether members should be automatically assigned to a Flotilla based on region, and that the 9th should be given to the German players, if we got enough of them to join. (We had no idea how big that place would get)
I lurked at Subsim for about a year before I joined....which was probably in 1999. I think I used RickC then but I can't remember. (I'm old)
The integrity of this place stood out like a beacon and the help you got from the people here wasn't just good, it often came from guys who had a naval history and that impressed me. The early names I remember were Bill Nichols and Hondo. I stumbled onto the place by searching the web for tech help.
Memories... Beta testing SHII - Destroyer Command multiplay with Neal, Old Man, Ddoutel (Duane), and some others. It was hard to go through the necessary business when you really wanted to cut loose on somebody. Somehow, some way, before we ended for the night Old Man (cwarrior0 to some) would find a way sink Neal's destroyer. :ping:
Getting to know Frank, Tak, Rich, Nos, ZZsteven and the rest of the Yahoo Crew.
Playing in a DD with Rich (Deerhunter UK) vs Sharky and after cease fire was called I drove my destroyer right up beside Rich's for a photo shoot. Sharky took the picture then sent an eel into my boilers.
Frank teaching me vertical TMA.
Yes, guys. I showed a longtime friend, Sharky, the WPL and this place and she joined soon after. All you potato peelers have me to blame.
Torplexed...you underestimate yourself. You're art is fantastic and you have a gift for capturing the personality of your subject matter. They are anything but just strange cartoons.
Bad... That 5 page list of rules for WPL multiplay. Neal wanted to keep the rules as short as possible, and that was as short as possible.:damn:
..The shortcomings of SHII.

I don't remember, exactly, how I found the forum. I think it was during a search on Yahoo. I first visited the site shortly after I got Jane's 688(i) Hunter-Killer in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart. I'm pretty sure I found the patch through this site. It also seems to me, that when I would search for a patch for Command: Aces of the Deep, the search always lead me to this site. I guess I always hoped for a patch for that game... I don't think I visited the forums much during my early visits. When I finally started posting the forum was using phpBB in the, now a Subsim trademark, SmartDark. It is hard for me to visualize Subsim in any other color! Through the years I was able to remember the name of this site rather easily. I would check in now and then, namely when I was bored :p;), to see if there was any new news posted. I think my first posts to the site was in the early days of Dangerous Waters. There was a contest going at the time for people to post to the forum set up. If I remember right, I think six winners would be randomly chosen. If they won, they got a signed copy of the game. After that I made a few posts to the forum. I, then, didn't post much. The people in the Dangerous waters forum knew so much about modern warfare, and still do, that I didn't think I had anything to contribute (and still do ). When Silent Hunter III was announced I made my way back to this forum. I remember when the big news was broke that the campaign would be changed to my dynamic. That was a happy day! One of the most fun times I can recall here at Subsim, was the Recon-Test. I would try and check in everyday to see what the intel photo was going to be. They were all pretty challenging and that is why it was so enjoyable. I have often thought of changing my screenname, but have just kept with it. Maybe if I come up with the right one sameday, I may consider it. I don't see myself going anywhere anytime soon.:arrgh!:

Got back into Sub Command after a long hiatus and was searching the internet for mods, downloads, and patches. I saw an article that said Sonalysts was making a new game. I kept searching for stuff and found SCX and subsim. After being impressed with SCX and the highly anticipated DW I registered as a forum member. That was a little over 2 years ago. I'm a member of two other forums. One related to jobs in the aerospace industry, and another to dirt biking. I've trolled a few others. Subsim is by far the best one and often times, the most interesting one.

I found this convoy during a patrol for any "Aces of the Deep" related news: I had what I wanted, and lot more.
For weeks, or maybe months, I was just an unregistered reader; then, the discussion about wishes on SHIII under development convinced me to post too; it was about the time when Skybird was called The Other.
Always used my current nick here, and in SHIII official forum later; I choosed it just because it was the name of my current captain (sadly, he had a very short life in the environment where he was born).
Out of the submarime thing, I feel amazing this place for the "general topics"; an overwiew on people's point of wiew I never saw before.
Just a bit annoyed now by the new forum, as it gives me some problem.

How I found SubSim?
I had some weird GFX issues with SHII and started googling around and eventually ended up here. This was in April 2004. I think I registered the same day I came here and before I made my first post.
I remember the first reply to my question was something along the lines of "Tough luck, pal." How very helpful indeed, hahaha! And no, I never solved the friggin' problem.
Nickname was the same as now, my initials basically.
Oh, the good ol' "..Curiosity Killed The Cat®"-thread... But hey, how was I supposed to know it would escalate with such scale?
I mean, I was new to this whole forum thing and while reading old threads I was stubmling on these "BUMP"-posts all the time. And no matter how much I tried to figure them out, I couldn't.. so I asked :88)
Oh yeah, the Drebbel trial was also fun.. not that I had anything to do with it.. *ahem*

Roughly when sh2 came out :)
What do you recall about Subsim upon your first vist? (Some article, some game, maybe some forum topic, etc.)
Forums (all of them pretty much as i had most of the games listed in the various forums) and the mod section. The review section was nice too, but mainly it was the forums and mods section :)
What type of forum was Subsim using at the time? (Matt's BBS, EZBoard, phpBB 1.44, etc)
I think but im not 100% it was just before the switch from EZBoard to php. But i could definatly be wrong (i can hardly remember the day before let alone 5+ years back) :)
What was your name or Subsim nickname then? Same as now or something else?

NeonSamurai has been my nickname for 10 years online on many different communities.
I would also like to say that subsim has been for all these years one of my favorite homes that i always come back to. Mainly i like the environment here. We dont tollerate flamers, trolls and other people who make most other online communities a living hell (look at any MMO company forum for an example of forums at their worst). Partly i think its this way as we tend to attract older gamers, but mostly i think its because the Subsim staff and moderators (myself included) try hard to keep this place clean, helpfull, and friendly. As long as this place exists i will stay.

Hmm well what can i say about me that isnt my entire life story or read like some personal's advert in a newspaper/dating service :)
I tend to be a calm and relaxed person and it takes alot to tick me off, i like helping others, though i only tend to speak/post when i feel the need to (thats why i only have like 550ish posts in almost 5 years). Out of those posts i would say 70% of them are me helping someone with some game. I generaly dont tend to chit chat and i generaly hate small talk (talking for the sake of filling the void with inane useless chatter is one of my biggest pet peves).
Education wise i would say im about 99% self educated, i learned pretty much nothing from school (long story and one not worth getting into) having previously taught it to myself. I did complete highschool, never studied a day in my life, and almost never did homework either (i was stubborn and refused to waste my time on such pointless excersises). Now at 32 im looking to go to university, planning on getting a doctorate most likely in psychology.
As for gaming, my tastes are pretty varried, i guess thats why i ended up as the "Other Games" forums moderator. I played everything from PNP Dungeons and Dragons and other RPGs, Also various wargames particularly one who's name i forgot (it was a well known pnp modern naval wargame in the 80's, you could get the jane's reference books and take the stats from it and play the game, sort of like harpoon). As for video games, well i started playing them when they came out, from pong on up. My first subsim was of course Gato (use to play hours each day on that one, i ended up sinking every ship about 10 times and having to reset the sunk list), and i played most of the classics since gato (modern and ww2). I also play FPS games (realistic or not), MMO games, racing games, RPG games, and pretty much everything else but sports games (which i generaly dont care for.

Well Neal, I started surfing on subsim.com right before I bought SHII. I had seen SHII on the shelf at walmart and thought I should readup about it before I bought it. A google search brought your place up.
At that time ya'll were on the EZBoard forum, but I never did join there.. You went to the next version, I can't remember (PHP I think). That is when I joined, I had gotten SHII by then and was needing help.
That was late 2001 IIRC.

I started first checking it out when I got.... I have been sitting here trying to remember the name of it but it has just slipped my mind right now. It was a sub and surface game that came out quite awhile ago. I can not bloody well remember the damn name for some reason.
Anyway, while searching for tips on it, I came upon this website. Soon after I started checking out SHIII which had already been out awhile and so I bought it and have played nothing but SHIII ever since. (Well as far as naval games go.)
Oh how many years ago was it? I can't even think of any other websites that I visit regulary after all this time!!! I ran across Subsim back when I heard SHII was being made and it rekindled my interest in SH1. I've been around off and on ever since! This is one of the few communities that has really stood the test of time.
Great job to Neal and the rest of the team members over the years who have made Subsim such a great site!

I first learnt about subsim in 1999 when I started looking for a Subsim after watching Das Boot. I came across CAOTD and SH2 wasnt too far away. Probably found it using copernic. I remember back then subsim and the WPL (Which I think I found first) consisted of very few members, and they all seemed to know each other. I was welcomed quickly. My nickname hasnt changed since I registered though i do remember a time when everyone decided it would be a good idea to reverse their names.
I remember staying up till 4am some mornings playing SH2 and DC thanks to me being in NZ (+12GMT). Coming on yahoo just before I went to school in the morning just as everyone else was getting ready for bed. I'll never forget Frank talking about how he crashed his bike and was trying desperately to save the paint. I remember when vonSpike figured out how to work the asdic properly on DC. When someone invented the BB Melee's. That was the most fun I've ever had playing a game. Ahh the memories.

I found subsim whilst looking through a google search i had been playing sub command for a long time and was looking if there was any newer ones coming out, and low and behold i stumbled upon the gold mine of the subsim world.
I first visited around 2003 i cant remember but i lost the link and hunted for it for a long time then i found subguru emailed bill nichols and asked to which he kindly gave me the link to this place.
What do i recall not much realy apart from my introduction posts, other than meeting some very decent people, who i have learnt alot from and also made some good friends wit.
My name here has always been kapitan and that wont change.
Only that i personaly believe that subsim is the hub of all naval games and i hope it remains so for a long time to come, theres alot of excellent players guys and girls here we all can learn from, and the best thing of all is there is not alot of bit*hing fighting scrapping or what have you. (ok ok in fairness i have started a few)
I am proud to be a subsim member its one of the very few decent forums on the net one where we can all come together and share our views opinions and rarely gets out of hand.

1. I can't remember how I found the site....to long ago.
2. Late 90's sometime, after getting SH 1. Didn't register until much later.
3. Don't recall anything in particular, though the layout/colors then weren't as nice as now.
4. Don't recall the forum; I was still on dialup then and didn't bother with forums much........tie up phone/cost.
I may have registered before my 2002 registration (re-registration ?).....can't remember.
5. See # 4 above :)

26 years. Feeling old :( Father was in the military, now retired. Lived abroad because of that. High school with good grades. Army, one year in a recon unit as an NCO, wich i liked. Trying to keep in shape by running and lifting weights. I had to quit hapkido fo time restraints, it still pisses me of and comes up every time i argue with my gf. Own my part of a family buisness and work on a factory also. Going to apply to police enforcement. Before i started to go out with my gf, i wanted to join the Marines. The US ones and kinda still secretly do, but i quess im too old. Does anyone know? :hmm:
I think 30 or 32 is the cut off.

Welcome aboard neoXman!
I first found subsim sometime in the late '90s, probably while looking for help with Fast Attack (Great game but unfortunately it was buggier than a straw matress in a boardinghouse) at the time I was a major naval sim nut playing USS Ticonderoga, Silent Hunter and even Wolfpack on an ancient DOS machine. I was a fairly frequent visitor but I never looked into the forums until the early 2000's. I joined a while later and now here I am!:arrgh!:

Wow, now there is a question...let me think (don't do that often, so if you smell wood burning, don't call the fire brigade, it's only me! hehe)
How did you learn about Subsim?
Well, i've always been into all things naval and after i bought my first pc and quickly installed SH2 onto it, i found the Wolfpack League and the links to subsim.com
When did you first visit?
Signed up around christmas time. :) Best present i ever got was my subsim membership! :|\\
What do you recall about Subsim upon your first vist? (Some article, some game, maybe some forum topic, etc.)
It was just an overall impression, rather than a topic or a game etc. It really felt like a home. Sounds corny, but doesn't stop it being true. Everyone seemed like they genuinely enjoyed visiting, contributing and making the place great!
What type of forum was Subsim using at the time? (Matt's BBS, EZBoard, phpBB 1.44, etc)
oh heck, can't remember to be honest, i think it was ezboard but don't quote me!
What was your name or Subsim nickname then? Same as now or something else?
Same one. :)
Anything else you would like to mention (nostalgic times, people, events in the Subsim community):
lots of stuff, too numerous to mention, but of course, I remember Frank, i remember Crow; iirc he was very generous with his €€'s. Drebbel (with his moderator's hat on!:arrgh!: ) Of course, the drive to get SH2 fixed and the subsequent Projekt Messerwetzer and Pacific mod. And last but by no means least, who could forget Torplexed's amazing and hilarious toons. (He's a genius!)
Just so many great memories! Can't believe i've been coming here for almost 5 years....feels like 5 minutes.
Thanks Subsim!

How did you learn about Subsim?
I was looking for anything related to modern submarine warfare, and specifically Jane's 688i H/K, when a search on AltaVista brought me to subsim; most specifically, the "Fix My 688i!" Campaign. I signed the petition: James McQueen, blown away that someone loved the game as much as I did, but was doing something about it to make it better! I stuck around, read and learned on the old forums (I assume it was Matt's BB, as it was the old Bulletin Board thread tree style forum. I think it changed shortly thereafter.) Subsim.com became THE place for me to go to learn about modern and historical naval warfare, new subsim releases, and read the cool articles that Neal wrote (my favorite being his adventures as a guest aboard a real US Sub! Can't find that article now, I'm all nostalgic looking for it, anyone know where it is?)
I think when I first signed up on the original BB it was as JamesM, then later as the forums changed, I was Skweetis. (if anyone wonders what it means, well, it means nothing really, just the name of a song by a band called The Melvins... thought it had an odd ring, and that it wouldnt already be taken! haha)
But, me being what I am, always the Lurker rarely the poster :)
Anyway, thanks for many MANY years of service and enjoyment Neal! And here's to many more to come!!!!
