I'm gonna quote myself from 2014 and add a few things. xD
Name(s): Various, for the most part of the day it's Papa (daddy) or Bengt.^^ If my wife lets me use the PC I'm known as Hjalfnar or Hjalfnar_HGV. :D
Age: 30
About me: Hm. What might be of interest...ok, I'm from Germany, working as...well, quite a few things with computers and video games, most of which are under NDA. Still married and having 2 children, will be 3 next year. How do they say, if you find somebody to love keep him/her. That's what I did and this year at 8th August we are married for 10 years.^^ Never thought that would happen as my parents divorced when I was 11 and I was their only child.
On the other hand my wife got five sisters and brothers, must have something to do with her mother being a Mormon. Seemingly in a reaction to this my wife is an atheist now. xD
But because of her big family she wanted children and what should I say, wedding night already did it. And 9 months later my son was born, heared my voice and lifted his head to look me directly in the eyes and changed my life. My daughter followed 2 years later (named after the cruiser firing the first shots of the Russian Revolution, but my wife doesn't know^^) and now here I am as a happy young father.
I'm very interested in history, military history especially, from the tactics of the Greek in the Persian Wars to the Imperial Roman Army, the british Longbowmen to the Napoleonic Era line infantry, German Unification Wars, WW1 and WW2. I've actually started a youtube channel where I check games for their historical accuracy which was quite well received and which is being supported by two quite big military history youtubers who cooperate with me.
As I have longed for some new U-boat action I have returned to subsim to finally play SH5 with WoS mod and so far it's been nice to be back. CU guys under water!

No, it started as a rant. It caused so much trouble because it was a rather nasty rant.
Eichhörnchen

The body of the first post (describing the thread as a diary) was just two sentences... not much of a rant by most internet standards. It was turned into a debate by others
Sailor Steve
02-21-19, 02:24 PM
.... oh no they bloody aren't:
...
I've been in an almost-wreck on so many occassions because of women driving like this, so I'd like to keep a diary here of future experiences just as a counter to the kind of claptrap above which we're now having pushed at us.
Those first two sentences are textbook examples of a rant. Yes, you then say you'll keep a diary, but it's a carefully constructed one-sided diary, much more agenda-driven tirade than honest recording.
That's why you got the response you did.
Eichhörnchen
02-21-19, 02:49 PM
Well I consider the 'body' of the first post to have been the paragraph of two sentences beginning with the one "I've been in...". If you want to split hairs then the actual first line of that post was simply a short, disapproving exclamation... and I remember from before that you took exception to my use of this word "bloody"... so if this is the nub of what you consider "nasty" then we've covered that already: it's a UK colloquialism often used informally to emphasise a point... not always & only as a swear-word.
I agree that it was agenda-driven... my agenda was to counter another, finger-wagging and lecturing agenda

When? I never thought about it one way or another, and never really cared. Most Americans don't have a clue about the word. I remember one complaint a very long time ago - before I even knew who you were - saying that it is a 'bad' word, but it's not on our list and I still don't care, so no, that's not why I brought it up. Mainly what got me was the open hostility I thought I was seeing. As I said, if not for that I never would have replied in the first place.
I agree that it was agenda-driven... my agenda was to counter another, finger-wagging and lecturing agenda
Fair enough, and citing examples ad infinitum is fine with me. My complaint was how one-sided your examples were. It looked like a lot of anger and rage to me. Maybe I'm wrong, but I respond to what I see, or to what I think I see. Either way, I'm done. You win.

Ahoy SUBSIM! I was fascinated with subs when I was a kid. I went into aviation as a career, and I still fly for a living. My job as a pilot has enabled me to visit several sub museum boats over the years, but the recent discovery of these great sub sims has really stoked my love of subs. I found Wolfpack and I am truly impressed. I am JUST getting started with it, so it's nooooob city for me! I also am messing with U-Boat, but again very new to these titles. I am a flight simmer, so I love the idea of realistic, historically accurate and immersive sims. Make it hardcore, and I am happy. Not to say that I don't enjoy some sci-fi gameplay like Star Citizen to relax a bit with also though. Heck, I even go full silly playing Sea of Thieves with my son on occasion! :) I have not played any other sub sims so I do not have a good base of experience with the genre. I do prefer first person perspective for the immersion factor, but that's just my preference, and I'm not dogmatic about it. Cold Waters looks cool too, so maybe some time I'll give that one a whirl for some more modern play. For now, I'm doing WWII aboard a Type VIIC! I look forward to learning and hangin out with everyone here! Cheers!

Then come August and I sneakily download SH5 and other stuff onto my old computer (I'm an 8th grader. Hello from Norway, I have recently bought Cold Waters and are interrested in Mods. Jive Turkey recomended this forum, so here I am. I only just started buying my own games again after some years off due to kids and stuff. But now, the oldest is in the army and the youngest is about finished school, so I have more time that I can do what I want now.
So I remembered loving 688 attacksub on Amiga 100 years ago, so quite randomly bought cold waters. While I love the game, it's a bit repetitive so after some browsing (and help from my son), I have descided to try some mods for the game.
What can you reccomend?

I've been on Discord and people are recommending the "Epic Mod" they say some "crazy Russkies cracked the unit encryption code and are happily adding units left and right." I would recommend that mod.
Here is the thread:

Hey, I found Sub Sim looking for some mods for Silent Hunter 4 and Cold Waters. Always enjoyed learning about subs and being able to control them for once is pretty great. Been "working" with subs for about a year and a half in real life. I was a tour guide at the first successful sub, The H.L. Hunley, and I'm about to get sent to my first real submarine in the fleet. I've worked on a couple old decommissioned subs so far with my time in the Navy and it's been great seeing what I've been working on in action, even if it is simulated. Hopefully I can get more involved here!

Why didn't you just say that your living in upstate NY now
I had to look it up
Does this mean that you are a Buffalo fan now?
Saratoga National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park located in the Town of Stillwater in eastern New York, forty miles north of Albany.
The park preserves the site of the Battles of Saratoga.

Greetings all. I'm here to introduce myself and express my thanks that such a place exists.
Personal info: I'm an older guy from Louisiana in the US but now living in Colorado. I love it here but the oysters are not quite the same. :) Hoping to make it back down south eventually. I'm an engineer for a company that makes traffic control equipment.
During this lockdown I've found myself spending more and more time on YouTube and less time watching TV. I ran across Wolfpack345's videos and thought that sub simulator games looked like fun. I've always liked sims and I've always had an interest in military history. Then from there I discovered Jive Turkey and some of the other guys doing playthroughs. So I figured I'd give it a try.
I'm starting out with SH4 but I will likely explore SH3 too at some point and I want to try Cold Waters as well. The new modern warfare game looks really great too. I hope that one gets off the ground. Game-wise, I have a lot of the training wheels turned on for now. I'm practicing things like trying to sneak into a convoy without being detected (harder than I thought) and how to set up an attack. As I get better, the training wheels will come off. My goal is to make things as real as possible because that, to me, is what sims are all about.
Some of my other interests include brewing beer and music. I've been brewing since the dark days of the late 80's and a music fan as long as I can remember. The water here is about as good as it gets for brewing. Say what you want to about Coors but they did get that right.
I appreciate all the hard work that has gone into this place and it appears to be a great community of very helpful folks. It's an amazing resource. A big :Kaleun_Salute: to all of you.

Hello!
My name is Alan, and I'm from Denver, CO, home of the USS Grayling Memorial.
I've always been interested in the Pacific Submarine Campaigns of WW II, both the US and the IJN, ever since I read about the exploits of Wahoo in Richard O'Kane's book of the same name. I still own the paperback I purchased at the school Book Fair in the mid 70's!
I'm particularly interested in the daily life aboard these Fleet Submarines, how the Crew passed their time on board during War Patrols, and for some quirky reason, the Food!
I've just loaded a stark Vanilla version of Silent Hunter 4 on my Laptop, and am interested in learning all I can about the 'Sim'.
Found the SubSim Forum via Bing, as I'm searching for an 'Ultimate' Tutorial Guide that will assist me in the 'basics' of just moving about the SH Enivironment, starting out with just getting the Boat moving in the Navigation Tutorial. I don't even know if such a Tutorial even exists!
So, meet me in the Crew's Mess during the Midwatch and say hello; the Cribbage board is ready, and the coffee's hot as I'm chowing down on some 'Pillows of Death'!
Hope to meet you folks soon.

Hi guys. I am a 50 year old Royal Navy veteran who has sadly become physically disabled and pretty much housebound over the last two years. I used to game many years ago and during my enforced not going out time have been watching a lot of YouTube vids about Silent Hunter 3. I have bought it for old times sake on steam and love it, but my manky eyes aren’t what they were and would love to play in a modern resolution with some of the mods I’ve been watching. However I am a complete idiot with computers and have no idea how to mod. Please can anyone help me? I would be happy with a widescreen mod in vanilla for now but eventually want Grey Wolves. Where do I find them and how do I do it? I’m even happy to pay in tea and bacon sandwiches if someone local to me could come and do it for me. Thanks guys.

Played all kinds of PC games since the KayPro 2 days (look that one up, you young whipper snappers!) and got the itch to come back to SH3 recently. Played Jane's 688i back in the day, and that’s what got me into subsims, but I have a wide range of games I enjoy.
In real life I am an information security analyst for a major university, a husband and a father of four kids and 4 dogs.

Its the wrong thread, but the Hawkbill used to moor just a couple of spots down the pier from the Bremerton and I got to know some of her crew.
The popular story those guys liked to tell (I give it 50/50 odds that it was true) involved a sailor who got a postcard from his old Minister from back home. He was visiting Honolulu and wondered if he could get a tour of the guy's sub. The sailor got approval from the command for a (non nuclear) tour of the boat and met his old Minister at the main gate. He walked the Minister down to SUBASE and then out to the pier.
The first thing the Minister notices is the 666 on the gang plank. The sailor shows him how to come down the ladder and takes the Minister to Control to show him around. The next thing the Minister sees is a placard near sonar that says DEMON. In another corner he sees another placard next to the navigation hardware that says SINS. At that point the Minister decided to take his chances topside and left the boat. :har:

I just did some math on my alma mater, and their tuition has grown almost double the rate of inflation since I went there. I thought it was full of rich kids THEN, in the '80s!!! God knows what it's like NOW!!!
Oh, here are the numbers (adjust for inflation):
44K per year when I went there
80K per year now
Who can afford this!?!?!?

The cost of university/college these days is INSANE.
Just during the span of my time attending a public state-affiliated university the cost went up just over 15k per year between my first and last year.
I was fortunate to escape with very little in the way of student loans but others are not so lucky. At least with the school I went to, it's 90% STEM types so almost everybody is able to get a higher than average paying job.

Yeah, the unis know they will get Uncle Sam to foot the bill when the stoodents can't get the act together. I had $30,000 of student debt in 2010 on my hospitality degree. Even though I only worked as a hotel manager for a little over a year, the decision to get that degree was mine, so therefore so was the debt. It took about 4 years but it wasn't that onerous to pay off.

No no - a semicolon is used when you wish to expand upon the immediate subject and want to avoid using a full stop. Certainly it denotes a longer pause than is usual with a comma, but it's intended to keep us focused on the same subject

...both gazing fondly on the 'Merican copy of the Scottish designed Carronade "pounder"; used with great effect on the spardeck for murderous close up carnage work to augment the 18 or 24 pounder broadside from the main gundeck below. With less recoil distance than a main wheeled-carriage seven-man cannon, the sled-mounted carronade only required a four-man crew. Generally outclassed by the greater weight-of-metal and longer range of an American frigate's broadside, the English frigates were inclined to avoid a one-on-one encounter...as the USS Constitution amply demonstrated...3 times! and approx. 15% of the original still remains afloat, commissioned, and occasionally firing thru a gunport! :arrgh!: https://www.nps.gov/bost/planyourvisit/images/USS-Constitution-Web.jpg?maxwidth=650&autorotate=false&quality=78&format=webp

Name: Bigeagle (seriously, it's a somewhat stupid nickname that stuck even irl; fun fact: it started as a pilot name for the game 'raptor - call of the shadows')
Age: mid 30
About: Well, i just reactivated this account since i thought i'd give SH4 another try and looked for some mods. Not much to find outside of here and no downloads without an account. While i was wondering why there are no torrents for quasi no-cost distribution i saw that those are apparently banned here? I get that 'no pirates' part but why is that distribution tech linked with that? i got almost all linux images and other foss software that way. Anyway, that explains the problem with costs for providing downloads.
Also the account is already nearly 13 years old and it seems like this is the first post.
Probably same procedure back then. Silent hunter 4, looking for mods, none to find except for here and wondering why.
I played mostly Silent Hunter 3. It was my first intensive contact with submarine sim. Switched to LSH3 and still playing that from time to time. Hindered by the need to play a patrol in more or less 1-2 sessions with basically nothing running in the background that may disturb the easily scared unicorn that is SH3.
At some point i also got SH4 and it looked really well in the beginning but i remember some nasty bugs that broke the game experience for me.
So in the end in 2024 i'd still plug in a dvd drive to install an almost 20 years old game to get my submarine experience. Seems to be a bit weird but maybe i just missed the more recent games in the area.
On the other hand SH3 may have been a bit outdated in terms of game technology (fixed resolution in 2005? a subsim where you shouldn't dare to save under water?) but it aged quite well in my opinion. Especially the game concept still works well without feeling awkward. Just a bit clunky graphics and simpler than necessary simulation (we got multicores now and loads of ram)
Bonus confusion: when i try to edit my profile or options i get a message that the server has reached it's capacity. So it probably needs to stay 'classified' for now :D

Thanks, mate. Funny you should say that - I got asked to play the role 4 or 5 years earlier - but it was by the "Reliance Mutual Insurance Company Amateur Film Club" (the Head Office, where I worked before taking up painting). Believe me it wouldn't have been the most exciting movie in the genre, even with me in it :haha:

Thanks Robert. Carol's unit ( actually both apartment blocks ) has/have been bought by developers, and going to be demolished. I've been going back while I still can and taken lots of photos- each one has a memory attached.
Now it's an empty shell, and soon to be an empty space.... We had a lot of good times there. When it's all over I'll post some photos.

I'm sorry to hear that, Arnold. The Restaurant where Susan and I had our first Date / Dinner was bought out and torn down. I was deeply saddened to see it demolished. It was an Irish style Pub with an Irish name to go with it. :) The Restaurant also featured a great menu and food and drinks as well. The Restaurant fast became one of our favorite places. :yep:

Greetings,
I just learned about the rule to post anything in order for moderators to know I am not just another bot.
I don't really know what to say.
But I liked the heart and soul of SUBSIM and to read info about various good games I just got into on it.
Since young age wanted to be a submariner but will current qualifications can only be infantrymen if I try my best. I guess PC simulations are always there for me.
Thank You:salute:
