Once had my hair almost to my waist. Wife made my cut it as hers was curly and refused to get that long.

That was 34 years ago.

Name: Al
DOB: 3/8/89
POB: Northern VA
Location: Southern VA (Tidewater)
Occupation: occupationless at the moment, looking for work (commercial fishing is what i wanna keep doing). :wah:

Bio:
I lived overseas for most of my life, since my dad was in the Air Force. I lived in St. Petersburg (Russia), Maastricht (Holland), Munich and Berlin (Germany). Berlin was by far the best haha.
I have always had a love for the sea, my grandfather had a crab boat in the Chesapeake Bay and I would come home every summer to work on it with him. I have been hand pulling crab pots since I was 8.
I found subsim.com just by googling SHIII and looking for mods. I came across it about 4 months ago (which is when i started playing SHIII again) and decided after reading a lot on this site, that yall are a great community that I would like to be a part of :salute:

Glad your here too ... I love Chesapeake Bay ... one beautiful area that I never had time to fully explore. Spent a year in Newport News back in 67/68 on the USS Ethan Allen SSBN 608 going through overhaul.

Attended the boat show every year in Annopolis for four years as a boat salesman.

I pray for those terroist to leave Chesapeake alone (as I hope for all of America)

Welcome aboard Eberhardt

Thank you sir

Yeah newport news is an OK place. I go to vocational school in Hampton, which is right next to NN. My favorite places are on the Eastern shore, where the real watermen are. Chincoteague, Onancock, etc. Ever been?

BTW my grampa had his boat at Kent Narrows Marina, and he lived in Severna Park, which is just south of Annapolis.

Ow, they get along aslong as they arent too drunk, my mom and dad have separated but are still close, but give them abit of alcohol and all hell breaks loose. :haha: Anywho, as for the cottage, it's the best place to spend a summer in. We have only a small generator to give electricity for stuff like the telly & lights, but's that's about it. And it's very peaceful there, only thing you hear is the waves & birds singing (or me or my brother, depending how late to the night it is). I only had time to go there 2-3 times last summer, hopefully I have more time this summer. Miss the place already. My grandpa (the one in the pics) built it some 40 years ago, so it's pretty darn important for me & the rest of the family. Wouldnt change it for anything. :yep:

I currently work as an ADSL techsupport agent

I found subsim through looking for mods for sh3, but only signed up a year or two later when I had some questions I needed answered.
I then at some point started pestering the GWX team about erroneous geography in SH3 and could their awesome mod fix this please...
Turns out they couldn't, but it did get me noticed apparently. so at some point I got an invite to do beta testing on what was then the upcoming GWX. 1.4b but quickly turned in to GWX 2. and later 3
At this point I was in way over my head, and quickly building up a huge sleep deficit, but it was all worth it :salute: I've never been involved in a single computer game for so long, or learned so much from doing so.

My best subsim memory is without doubt the 2009 meet in Denmark. Unforgettable

Outside the sub-sim world I do a lot of different PC gaming, and also a lot of reading, on average 2 or 3 books a week. that and work combined leave little time for anything but sleep. Thankfully there is such a thing as coffee... couldn;t get through the day without it.

About me:

I am a long time WW2 history addict, and have manged to combine it with my love of computers.. in games such as SH2, CFS3, IL2, and in the MMORPG known as WW2:ONLINE - Battleground europe.

I last played SH2, but have recently become interested again in the U-boat side of gaming... Thankfully I lost my copy of SH2 and got myself a copy of SH3.. which totaly blew my mind... only sad i got in on it so late! Since then I have found this forum to be an invaluable resource and have become hooked again on Submarine warfare... mainly u-boats, but I intend to get a copy of SH4 to try that out as well. Am currently downloading GWX-3 before I go any further as I think it will take the game to a different level still.

Just thought I would add a few words about myself so im not a complete stranger in this great community.

Cheers
Ed.

Have a BA in History from the Universiy of Delaware and thoroughly enjoy most historical periods. Was always especially fascinated by WW2 and the Cold War. I enjoy umpiring Little League Baseball for my son, coaching soccer for my daughter, Music, and Gaming.

Favorite Games: I go in cycles, I get thoroughly sucked into a game for about 3-4 months and then pick up another one or come back to one I have had (Like SH3). Some other favs than SH3 are CIV3 and 4, EA FIFA Soccer 08, Sid Meiers Pirates, Sid Meiers Railroads, and Panzer General 2. Recent interest in SH3 was spurred by trip to Outer Banks of North Carolina in the summer and reading up on U-boat war off the coast in 1942.

How I found Subsim? Back in 2006 I picked up SH3 and was loving it (staying up until 4 AM on work nights) and was looking for user groups via Google. I have done other forums and this one is by far the best (as I am sure most if not all would agree). The details that people post, and the details and effort that the modding community put into their products show so much talent, devotion, and passion for the 'immersion' experience. Thanks to all who post and create so much add-on content for SH3, especially those who were involved with GWX.

Picture below shows me and my son, age 9, at Cub Scout summer camp. It also sums up my outdoorsman capabilities. I can relate to Bernard!!

Ahem.

hi guys

I'm alive

:dead:

So I'd really like to apologize to Neal and the rest of the community. I left the forums unannounced about a year ago after some minor spats on the GT forum here - but really, that had nothing to do with it. Sadly some bad stuff happened in my personal/family life and I just had no more energy to deal with anything else.

So I got into that whole finding-myself stage. Spent a bit of time traveling, but still tried to stick in school. Made some new friends, had some new experiences, had some bad new experiences too. I'm still busting my brains working on that PhD in communication studies, but so far holding up.

I can't say I'm quite out of the woods, but I just couldn't stay away from subsim. I've been lurking around for a couple of months now, feeling rather too stupid to dare come back, but I can't stay away anymore.

My sincere apologies to all my subsim friends whom I've ditched without so much as a note to say I'm leaving for a while. I promise it won't happen again.

...will I really not be court-martialed for this?

...feeling rather too stupid to dare come back...
Funny thing about that. I once stopped talking to some friends because I did something I thought was a total friendship-buster. When I talked to them again, all they said was "Where have you been?" and "What did we do to tick you off?"

So the only negative thing I'm going to say is: DON'T NEVER DO DAT AGAIN!:nope:

And I mean go away, not whatever it was that prompted you to.

After all the jokes you've made about bass players, how could you even ask?

Now, really. I've never in my life made a joke about bass players.

I have, however, repeated quite a few of them. :O:

Seriously, though, as I said in the GT thread - I didn't know they made basses with more than four strings. At first glance I thought it was a guitar just missing a string, then I was like, wait, it's not, there's only supposed to be five... thus the head-scratching.

Sailor Steve
07-23-10, 01:12 PM
The five-string has an extra string below the usual four, which allows for some lower tones. We also do some songs with extra guitars tuned down a half-step. The new bass lets me play in E-flat without retuning.

The six-string bass also has an extra higher string. It's popular with jazz players.

There is also an eight-string bass, but it's actually like a 12-string guitar - four strings but doubled, with the extras being an octave higher, so it plays like a regular 4-string but it has a cool sound. Not really necessary these days, as a digital effects processor can do that electronically.

CCIP
07-23-10, 08:38 PM
If you think that's too many strings on a bass-range instrument, you must be unfamiliar with the Warr Guitar (and other touch instruments in the same vein, like the Chapman Stick):

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p301/myspb2006/warr.jpg

In the right hands, incredible instruments (not just gimmicks, trust me) :|\\

Sailor Steve

Looks like an electric sitar. Cool stuff.

Of course in the right hands (such as those of Stanley Jordan) a standard guitar becomes an incredible instrument.

Didn't want to go all the way to the scalp because I wanted to be beardy for winter, and I'm not really in the mood for a goatee right now. I thought about doing a clean scalp and muttonchop combo, but I don't think the socio-religio-politico apparatus is advanced enough for that one.

Noted that I should not attend. I ended my binge drinking days about 10 years ago.

Listen to the man, he speaketh wisdom earned by experience.oh, but generally speaking my alcohol consumption is quite moderate:yep: Usually I drink only about 2 beers a day, with generally 2 binge drinking days a week (number of beers ranges from 6 to 30 or 40).

So, what do you drink on average?

At lot less than that now, to be honest. I maybe have one night a month of heavy drinkage and a couple more where I have a few drinks, but the rest of my time I spend sober. A few years ago I was permanently on the piss for about 3 months straight, nearly lost my job due to that. Then lost it anyway due to the army.

But I do have a gin&tonic on most nights, just one.

Well I bought a Asus Netbook for School and it came with a web cam. So I figure I would try it out and post my ugly mug here...

Found SH3 On steam, thought that would be cool, as I used to really enjoy 688. In my quest for the superbly written manual, I found SubSim. Thanks to Neal for eventually letting me register with a real email addy :P. (In hindsight, after reading the zombie thread, I see why)

Nah, those are no good. They always start out with him as a dashing u-boat commander and me as a waitress in a beer garden in Wilhelmshaven who is awaiting a secret steamy rendezvous when he returns from patrol.... but then he always ends up running into Helgoland on the way home and sinking the boat, after which everybody drowns but him and he's court-martialed and sent to a penal battalion on the Eastern front.
