http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/6341/ussbowfin033.jpg

which reminds me I joined the submarine service fifty (50) years ago this coming Wednesday April 3rd 1963.

A few days later on April 6th the USS Thresher sank with all hands on board ...

my mother wasn't too pleased with my volunteer status after that, but what's a young boy suppose to do.

I've been in love with submarines since I was ten (10) years old watching the old black and white Silent Service tv shows.

I'll try to find a picture ... no one ever really believes these stories anyway :D

Jimbuna

Reminds me of the guys that work for local authorities and manage the cctv systems in populated areas around the country.

A crime is committed then they are worth their weight in gold in helping you pinpoint the exact location at the precise moment the crime was committed.

Nice, which one do you game on on a night shift?

The right most one.

And Jim, yeah that is part of the job, look up specifics for law enforcement quite regularly, though more often than not we don't get the entire incident and sometimes you only get it in the peripheral area of the camera.

Still often good enough to gain a successful conviction...at the scene of the crime, weapon or action in full view, leaving scene of crime with stolen property etc. etc.

You do a good job despite the fact it can become boring for long periods of the shift

The last time I saw that many monitors, the security guard was faced the opposite direction, eating a pizza.:haha:

antikristuseke
04-21-13, 03:00 AM
The amount of feeds coming into this place is into 4 figures, only the highest risk ones are on screen constantly, this type of video surveilance is there to look at events after they have happened, it is very rare that an actual incident in progress is caught. If one tries to keep monitoring the monitors constantly they will go insane is fairly short order.

Caught my first halibut! I caught it off the Oregon coast, ~35 miles out at sea, at the chicken ranch. On the way out, the people we were following almost hit a killer whale:o.

The halibut is 34 inches, which is small, but a keeper. I caught it in around 600 ft of water.

Hello all, I found out about subsim by just asking myself if Silent Hunter was able to accept mods. I searched for mods for the game and I found this site. When I play Silent Hunter I focus on realism. I almost never speed up the game to get to a desired place. A while back it took me three days to get to the place to start a patrol. I just keep my PC running. I also play a bunch of other WWII games. I have always loved all things WWII related and I myself have a lot of WWII guns and gear. One thing I like to do in my free time is fly small aircraft like Cessnas and Pipers.

He served in the Boer War, First World War, and Second World War; was shot in the face, head, stomach, ankle, leg, hip, and ear; survived two plane crashes; tunnelled out of a POW camp; and pulled off his own fingers when a doctor refused to amputate them. Enjoyed sunday morning by going out on my bike for a coffee at a bar halfway on the road to Ronda which during the weekend is busy with bikers doing laps from down the coast towards Ronda.

And is that front tyre on the wrong way? Normally the direction of the channels start at the point to reach the ground first and push water out to the sides as it rotates, that looks the opposite and more likely to aquaplane. :hmmm:

Or it could just be a weird tyre profile.

No, he sets his camera up, selects time delay and runs back to his bike and jumps on. He's not actually moving - all he's done is jump on and raise the stand and put his feet up, two seconds later he was flat on the floor. :har:

Or something like that. :O:

I used to have a camera with a wireless remote that could've done it, but it would more than likely been out of focus.

Nice to know the photographer's priority of location was a bar.

I've heard of cameras like that...but yes, it would have some problems with a shot like that.

And looking again, that little windscreen doesn't look like it does much. :03:

I tell you what, you ride an unfaired bike at 70 mph (or faster if your roads/track allows), and then ride with that 'little windscreen' and see if you can spot the difference. :)

Had the same experience in a Gyrocopter. I was taller than the windscreen so I had to slouch to keep my eyes open. :arrgh!:

Good job, young buckaroo! Back in 1963 I was riding in a truck with my mom and her husband (No. 3, I think) late at night when he spotted a rattler on the road. He ran over it twice, shot it twice and threw it in the bed of the truck. After all that killing he still had enough intact skin to have a belt made out of it.

Since this thread is the closest one for saying hi for the first time, i guess i'll take this opportunity for posting this here.

My name is Ignacio Tapia, alias M3rcurio. I've been a member for quite a while and never said hi previously. My apologies for that. I've been silently reading most posts and articles around here (just like silent the service d: ). But from now on, i definitely want to participate more in this community, sharing experiences and Silent Hunter related things!

A little info about me: I am a 19 yrs old Chilean, and i am a proud Cadet for my country's Air force. Therefore i am forever an Aviator. As most of my time i am busy with that, on my spare time i had always used FSX, and now X-plane, however i still have my nautical side (perhaps if i hadn't chosen to be an aviator, i would have gone to the Navy d: ).

So normally i go for seasons in simming: I stay flying for a while, then i switch to nautical for a while! Either way, i'm here to say hi and i hope to get along with the community!

See you on the virtual seas!

Occupation: Unemployed Iraq War vet and die hard Sub simmer!

Age: 26

DOB: 9FEB1987

How I found Subsim:

I wanted to find a community who could help me understand submarine simulations better, and also how to add mods to my game to make it more immersing. I typed "submarine simulator forums" into google, and Subsim was the top pick.

I was also looking to curb the boredom in my off time by chatting with others who were veterans like me and fellow sub simmers. I wanted to feel like I was a part of something greater than myself, so I joined, and I'm glad I did! This community has become like family to me.

My ability to work with software and modify things within my own game files has improved immensely due to all the knowledge contained within this forum.

Expensive and risky.

Hi subsimmers!

As an new skipper I want to introduce myself: My name is Ralf, I am from Austria and feel great respect for Uboot-Fahrer from all nations of the world and am fascinated recreating this experience.

I played subsims in the old times (GATO and sub battle). Since then I tried Silent Service 2, Wolfpack and Enigma, but wasn't very excited by this games and frustrated missing nearly everytime with my torpedoes.

This changed when I found SH3 + Living Silent Hunter. I am impressed by this helpful community and the enthusiasm laid into modding the games (making me buy also SH5 and now I don't know which game to play and which mod to install first). I made a already donation and hope to get my hands on the GWX-mod soon!

The informations in the forums helped me a lot! Keep up the good work and your enthusiasm!

My name is Tommy;

I am 27 years old. Air Force Washout, national certified EMT-B.

In my free time I train in mixed martial arts, build custom computers, and write. I also am a amateur gunsmith.

I found subsim when I was perusing for a subsim. SHIII w/ the GWX mod was the first subsim I played since Aces Of The Deep. I noticed that the GWX mod utilized Das Boot, and I never saw the movie before. Turned out that I was severely missing out on the best submarine flick of all time. I currently have the Blu-Ray version ordered through Amazon.

Hope to contribute to the board.

Hi everybody, just wanted to say "hello" to some nice ppl after an awful day, I dunno where to do it (is there a "Hello, I love you all just because you live on the face of the earth" topic?), so here I am, saying HI FRIENDS to everyone here.

Erm... now that I'm here I guess I must say something about me.
(Interesting how people freeze when asked about themselves.. meeee tooo)

Well, I'm about 35+ yrs OLD, although I cant recall WHEN I grew so old.
I live in Romania - a place that I used to love, but then I moved out into more European countries for about 15 years, now I am forced to live here again - and now I hate every inch of it. I do not hate it because I had the chance to see better places, but because of what it BECOME while I was away.
I work myself to death every day (among tiresome, stupid people who all think themselves better than anyone, and I cant aford to tell them in the face how stupid they really are), earn sh*t, pay my rent and bills (not always), buy some food, go to sleep, start over.. the best part is when I play with my 3yrs old boy - but he's not at home now.
I wanted to be a pilot, started sports-flying for a couple of years, then they told me I will never be a pilot in this country (Because i am of hungarian nationality - which unfortunately become a small minority here - and back then my people were not alowed anywhere in the romanian army), so I decided to leave the country and try elsewhere. Elsewhere they told me that I cannot become a pilot, because I am form ROmania and not citizen of that Elsewhere. Catch 22, the circe was closed, no piloting for me. Since then I compensate by playing virtually when my time lets me. I play everything that has a rudder, but my favorite is IL2 and IL2-1946 with all the mods. When I get bored of it (it can be boring, flying at high altitudes for 3 hrs, then drop the bombs, miss the target and then fly back for 3 hrs), then I play even more boring games, like real time submarine simulator- which i love:D
I took the name Phyrrus from the first days of the internet and using it since. I have chosen this name after Pyrrhus of Epirus, an otherwise talended leader with lots of bad luck, who always had great ideeas but never had any luck accomplishing any of them, the wolrd was always against him - the name is following me like a ghost, as it happens to me too: everything I touch turns to dust sooner or later (This part is only for the melodrama, do not take it seriously). If you want more details, do not hesitate to PM me.

Now that I (hope I managed to) ruin(ed) eveyone's friday evening, I go on patrol, just started a new career in SH3, I cant wait so spend my whole night staring to the horizon :)

See ya ...

And NO, I am not depressed, not at all. Truly. No kidding. You can believe me, I am NOT.

Well, I was a bit under the weather last night, but a good walk in the (only) park (within a 10 km radius) with my son did magic, life is nicer today.
I forgot to tell you about my first contact with submarine sim.
I was living in Hungary then (2005 i think), when one day I bought a PC magazine, and that magazine had a copy of Beyond Good and Evil, an Ubisoft game released that year. I think nobody knows that game anymore, it was an action-adventure game for kids, not really my type of game, but the graphics, the wolrd it created was sooo very beautiful and touching that it was love at first sight. It was a virtual world so cozy and warm, like home, as if taken from my own imagination, as if I'd be designed it. Unfortunately the game itself was pretty scripted and straightforward, offered no possibilities for free roaming, but it was so beautiful that I just wanted to be INSIDE.
So I thought there must be other games like this, and started looking other Ubisoft games. I found the just released Silent Hunter III, developed by Ubisoft Romania... I was proud of the boys in Bucharest, as I am proud of them still today. They created something that really stands its place against time, and undoubtedly will be in the Hall of Fame of Classic games (next by Elite, Wing Commander and Rome Total War) forever.
Oh, and I NEVER get to play a full campaing till the end, I buried countless hours of my life under the waves of the Atlantic but never get to see the end of it, I always had to get a new mod and then start over :) So now I am determined to do a campaign till the end.
I restarted subsim a few weeks ago with SH5, but modding SH5 is soo very... beyond my patience, that I returned to Sh3.

Name(s): Various, for the most part of the day it's Papa (daddy) or Bengt.^^ If my wife lets me use the PC I'm known as Hjalfnar or Hjalfnar_Feuerwolf. :D

Age: 25

About me: Hm. What might be of interest...ok, I'm from Germany, a student of social work (Bachelor of Arts), already married and having 2 children. How do they say, if you find somebody to love keep him/her. That's what I did and this year at 8th August we will be married for 6 years.^^ Never thought that would happen as my parents divorced when I was 11 and I was their only child.

On the other hand my wife got five sisters and brothers, must have something to do with her mother being a Mormon. Seemingly in a reaction to this my wife is an atheist now. xD
But because of her big family she wanted children and what should I say, wedding night already did it. And 9 months later my son was born, heared my voice and lifted his head to look me directly in the eyes and changed my life. My daughter followed 2 years later (named after the cruiser firing the first shots of the Russian Revolution, but my wife doesn't know^^) and now here I am as a happy young father.

I'm very interested in history, military history especially, from the tactics of the Greek in the Persian Wars to the Imperial Roman Army, the british Longbowmen to the Napoleonic Era line infantry. But my greatest interest are the armoured troops of the 2nd World War. If you follow the course of this war you come to one simple conclusion: would the Kriegsmarine have won the Battle of the Atlantic, we would have won the war (which is quite a terrible thought, by the way!). So after reading some quite good german AARs about campaigns with SH IV and Operation Monsoon Mod I decided it was time to give the game a try, and now here we are reading all this stuff. :O:

It's on my list or better said St. Petersburg is on the list of my wife. xD She never left Germany except for our wedding holidays in Spain and is quite sad about that. So as soon as the children are old enough we'll spend some time in France, England, Russia and so on. The more southern countries aren't that interesting for us as we are both more the nordic type and don't like the bright sunlight that much.^^

Oh, by the way, the Highlands in Scotland are a priority holiday target, as we want a second, celtic wedding!

Hello subsim,

Wanted to drop a quick greeting and also a thank you to Neal, the moderators, the mod developers, and the supporters of subsim - it's a tough medium to keep alive, but it's you guys who manage to do just that and you deserve many kudos.

Not sure I'll be posting much around here, and I like to keep a low profile, but for introductory purposes I suppose I'll put some things out there. Grew up west coast USA, family has always been in shipping and naval careers generally. Did my undergrad with the mighty tree in palo alto - intl. economics and conflict studies, with a minor in rowdy football related drinking. Navy for a while after that, long enough to snag postgrad creds from NPS in defense analysis, but happily moved over to think tank work for a while. Hated DC, so now I teach a little, and do some consulting. I golf often and poorly, enjoy fly fishing, build and sail wooden boats when I can. I try to do half the year in US, half in Hong Kong.

I'm a long time sub simmer, but not on the latest generations - mostly a harpoon & red storm rising guy, quite enjoy Dangerous Waters as well. I was mostly raised by my uncle, who was merchant service '37-45 and thus I was not inclined towards the Silent Hunter series - it was made abundantly clear in my youth how I should feel about the Kriegsmarine. He passed last year, and after testing the waters with SH4 I am getting a mod soup ready for SH5; curious how easily HD visuals destroy decades-held convictions sometimes.
