Wow, you're good at this.
Congrats to Chelsea. I haven't seen the match, but from what I've read the Gunners didn't show up, and Hazard did. If Hazard is on his game, and Aubemeyang isn't, the outcome seems obvious.
A fitting end to a stellar Chelsea career for Hazard. In this day and age of petulant, spoiled footballers, he stands out as measured, thoughtful, loyal and humble. And one of the best players in world football. It's hard not to like this guy.
This assumes he is sold to Real Madrid, but all indications are it's essentially a done deal at this point.

Former Uefa president Michel Platini is being questioned by French anti-corruption investigators over the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.
Platini, 63, was head of European football's governing body until being banned in 2015 for ethics breaches.
The former France midfielder and three-time Ballon d'Or winner has always denied any wrongdoing.
Qatar beat bids from USA, Australia, South Korea and Japan in 2010.
Platini is being questioned in Nanterre, a suburb in western Paris.

I know the subject matter isn't exactly about British football but this hardly surprises me.

It has now been announced RAFA will leave the TOON next Sunday. There will now probably follow an exodus of disgruntled players.
Shame on you Ashley!!
Rafael Benitez will leave Newcastle when his contract expires on June 30, the Premier League club have confirmed.

No surprise on Platini. Well, that he was detained anyway.
The surprise is that it seems people are still investigating it. Heartwarming :)
As for Rafa, what a huge mistake to let him walk. Not sure why, though it seems that he wanted greater control, especially over transfers, and Ashley wouldn't agree to that.
Rafa was a higher calibre manager than Newcastle normally attract, with all due respect. They should have done more to keep him, if it's true that he would have stayed.
I think it's best for him that he's moved on. But where will he land? Could Chelsea scrap the Lampard chase and swoop for Rafa? I wouldn't trade him for Klopp, but if Klopp left I would take Rafa back in a heartbeat. He is a great tactician, the sort of manager who gets more from his team than the sum of their parts due to his tactical acumen and gameplans.
Jimbuna
06-24-19, 10:48 AM
I don't think there is a football club in existance that is too big for RAFA but he may move to China where he has been offered somewhere in the region of £25 million per year.
I'm wondering if Ashley will have the courage to visit St James Park again.
Threadfin
06-24-19, 12:07 PM
He could go to China, but I think only if there are zero opportunities in England and Spain, maybe Italy. There's big money in China of course, but it's such a footballing backwater. I don't see it unless he has no other destination in Europe. And surely these will open up. Solksjaer's gone by October :D
Jimbuna
06-25-19, 06:19 AM
My latest concern is who will replace him?
I can't see any self-respecting manager willing to work under the conditions RAFA put up with, unless of course they are a 'yes man'.
Threadfin
06-26-19, 07:24 AM
Curbishley? haha I trot that out for every vacancy.
A number of names are being bandied about, but an interesting one for me is Arteta. But you're right, the conditions at the club and for the new manager seem to rule out some of the higher profile potential hires.
I bet it's Ranieri.

Steven Gerrard has rejected Mike Ashley's approach to take over at Newcastle.
The Rangers boss rebuffed the advances from St James' Park and turned down the chance to succeed Rafa Benitez.
Gerrard and Patrick Viera were the main names in the frame for the Magpies but the Liverpool legend let it be known he wants to fulfil his ambitions at Ibrox, according to the Mirror.
Ashley understood that the chances of persuading Gerrard to take charge were slim but sounded out the possibility.
The 39-year-old wants to restore Rangers to their former glory and usurp Celtic as kings of Scotland.
He is already in the thick of pre-season with his squad and preparing them for their first Europa League qualifier of the campaign.
The Gers' take on St. Joseph’s of Gibraltar and the approach for Gerrard has served as a distraction.
It seems Ashley will also be disappointed by Viera, who is content to stay with Ligue 1 side Nice amid ongoing uncertainty at Newcastle.
Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan's proposed takeover has been a process fraught with mis-information and uncertainty.
As a result, plenty of fans have opted not to renew their season tickets and there are more questions than answers in the north east as it stands.

Further evidence to show just how toxic this parasitic odious man is.

He's a former Rokerite too, which mustn't sit well.
Of the 33 managers to manage at least 200 league games in the Premier League, Bruce has the second lowest winning percentage after Robbo of all people.
Hard to see what's in this for Newcastle. Safe hands? Hardly.
Best name available? Nah.
Will do as Ashley wants? Ding ding.
Newcastle swung and missed with this hire in my estimation. Here was a chance to get someone younger, more progressive, more in-touch with the modern game. Steve Bruce is none of those things. But if he stays up....

Match week one to City, two goals to the good now. Not likely to come down to differential, but you never know. The real worry is Allison, but there's no better time to get hurt, with the light schedule for the first month. Haven't see his prognosis, but hoping for a speedy recovery.
So Jimbuna, you must be happy that Ashley decided to open the strings with Rafa having bolted eh? Joelinton? Haven't seen him to be honest, but for that sort of price he had better hit the ground running.

Rafa had previously warned the fat controller that Linton wasn't worth £40 million so wasn't interested in him.
The question I'm pondering is who is the person or persons who identified £60 million of targets for this season because it certainly wasn't Rafa or Bruce (the second worst managerial record in Premiership history).
Hopefully they will all come good and we'll have a good season.

Gunners were there for the taking I'd reckon. I think this year the relegation line will be higher than usual, 38 points may not be safe. We will see.
United looked more free and flowing than in a long time. I think the scoreline flattered them a little, and Lampard's team selection for me was questionable.
Brighton got off to a flier eh? Burnley too.

Yes, that's one that Newcastle would have looked to for three points. Wasn't able to catch the match and judge the performance, but even if they played well enough to win, a loss to Norwich is a very poor result indeed.
Sorry to say but I picked Newcastle to go down, along with Sheffield and Norwich. Plenty of time left, but these games against the bottom clubs are must-wins.
How did Toon look against Norwich? Is sacking Bruce justified at this point? I mean, has he got his selection and tactics wrong already?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly selected Marcus Rashford as Manchester United's permanent penalty taker.
The decision comes after Paul Pogba missed from the spot in Monday night's 1-1 draw with Wolves .
The French midfielder grabbed the penalty after being felled at Molineux but saw his spotkick saved by Rui Patricio.
Threadfin
08-21-19, 12:30 PM
Yes, and Rashford's never missed.
For me it goes to show that United lack leadership from top down. PSG had the same sort of convoluted penalty arrangement in the recent past too.
A manager must set the taker and that's it. Anything else is silly. Title-winning teams don't have penalty by committee. You pick a taker, and if he's on the pitch he takes it. Done.
Allowing the players to debate it on the pitch is madness and shows weakness in the manager for me.

Fantastic result for Toon yeah. I watched the match, and although I give potato head a lot of grief, credit where credit is due. Newcastle looked cohesive and organized and showed fight and resolve. I pegged them to go down, but more performances like that will keep them in the top flight.

Newcastle might be better off sticking with Ashley you know, better the devil you know and all that, Salman and Staveley are an unknown quantity at the moment but they might just be the kick up the backside that Newcastle need, whatever happens its going to be interesting times ahead me thinks.

Now that was powerful offence in Blackburn. However home team had it's chances too. Near misses, posts and few game breaking saves by Meslier kept the net clean. Two fabulous goals from free kicks by both teams. Seems like first goal by wham bam Bamford equals win for Leeds.

Manchester City have successfully overturned their two-year ban from European club competitions.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) announced the club were cleared of "disguising equity funds as sponsorship contributions".
Uefa issued the ban in February after ruling City had committed "serious breaches" of Financial Fair Play regulations between 2012 and 2016.
City's fine has been cut from 30m euros (£26.9m) to 10m euros.
In delivering the ruling on Monday, Cas said City did "fail to cooperate with Uefa authorities" but overturned the decision by Uefa's club financial control body (CFCB) to ban them.

^ I'm not, Man City being banned wouldn't have been the end of this saga, they would have opened the biggest can of worms UEFA has ever seen.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and every other top team in europe would have been dragged into it and EUFA know that, that's why they'll just shrug their shoulders and breathe a HUGE sigh of relief that its all over, lets see how many of the top teams call foul on this, my guess is none of them. :haha:

Manchester Magpies is so wrong.
I put it here in this football related thread-even though it isn't about English football. They are mentioned in the article
I found it very interesting I have used translate.
"
The Danish national team's great hypocrisy
The national football team, together with the English national team, will kneel against racism and for Black Lives Matter on Tuesday. The jokes are consequently queuing up on social media.
There are two problems in misery.
One is the hypocrisy that both the Danish and the English national team expose. For what about racism and slavery in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the Middle East? Do the same players intend to show up in 2022 for the World Cup in Qatar, whose new stadiums have been built by slave laborers from Nepal and India, several thousand of whom died during the work?
Yes, obviously.
With this, the players - and Dansk Boldspil Union with the slogan ‘A Part of Something Bigger’ - will in a figurative sense kneel before racist and oppressed regimes. From where billions of kroner every year are transferred to European football clubs. There is apparently agreement to stick to being against American police brutality, some statues as well as some old movies.
This brings me to the second problem. And no, that's not a euphemism for something else, but it is also true that Black Lives Matter exists in dubious versions.
On the other hand, the Danish national football team, by kneeling against racism, opens a door that cannot be closed again. Should the national team then e.g. not also brought into the stadium under a rainbow flag? And what about all the other worthy, universal human affairs? How about running twice around the track in honor of the fight against naming Inuit as 'Eskimos'? What about Save the Children, the Red Cross, the fight against global warming and support for saving the rainforest?
Can't the national team beat a bucket for them?
Which, by the way, reminds me of another DBU slogan: 'Together against homophobia'. On the occasion of UEFA and the DBU's anti-homophobic set of rules
In Qatar, there is the death penalty for homosexuality.
Is there a politically correct form of expression to cover up the contradiction that one likes to play for regimes that kill homosexuals, but whistle everything when shouting 'gay ass' in domestic football stadiums?
Is there a politically correct form of expression to cover up the contradiction that one likes to kneel against racism when it comes to African-Americans, Afro-English and Afro-Danes, but bends the neck when Nepalese perish in gruesome and systematic exploitation in Qatar ?
If DBU has any answers, I would like to hear from them.

The club were criticised for buying players shortly after announcing 55 redundancies - mainly affecting the commercial and administrative departments - on 5 August.
Senior staff, including manager Mikel Arteta and his players, took pay cuts.
"I would be lying if I said there had not been sleepless nights," Venkatesham said.
Nine days after announcing the redundancies, Arsenal signed Willian on a three-year deal from Chelsea, before paying Lille £23.14m for Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes at the beginning of September.
But Venkatesham indicated that top-level clubs are facing financial uncertainty even as they invest in players.
The European Clubs' Association - which represents professional clubs across Uefa's jurisdiction - has estimated this week that the overall losses being borne by their members will be around £3.7bn.

It's been a busy week for the Magpies so far, with three new signings through the door.
Jamal Lewis joined Monday recruits Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser on Tuesday, as Steve Bruce's squad for the coming season is closer to becoming finalised.
The United boss is still keen to bring more new faces to Tyneside, with some potential loan deals in mind, while some players could yet be moved on.
All that has been slightly overshadowed by a return to the takeover saga - Mike Ashley and NUFC delivering a strongly worded statement criticising the Premier League who responded equally as tough.
Meanwhile, the build up to Saturday's trip to West Ham continues for United, with Fraser taking part in his first training session.

A deal for the Premier League to support lower-league clubs during the coronavirus pandemic "could be reached this coming week".
Plans for some fans to return to stadiums from 1 October will not go ahead because of the rising number of coronavirus cases, and it is feared the postponement could have a "devastating" impact on clubs.
Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said England's top division needs to "start looking after the football family as a whole" and he was hopeful an agreement could be made over the coming days.
"I've been in touch with the Premier League a lot over the past few days. They are working closely with the EFL to see how they can support them," said Dowden.
"The Prime Minister and I have been clear: the Premier League needs to start looking after the football family as a whole, and indeed they are having productive conversations.
"I am hopeful that they will reach a deal this coming week in relation to that, and then beyond that, look across at all sports."

I told ya when he was signed that Almiron was a good player. Maybe he doesn't score at quite the rate he should, but the fact he's still a starter for Newcastle shows he's a good player. Vital goal today.
Newcastle are sitting in a good spot. Must be nice not to be looking up at the rest of the table for a change. I gotta say that Bruce has done well. I thought it was a terrible hire at the time, but he's done a good job. Does the Toon Army feel the same?

Bruce is not rated by many of the TOON fans and the number is growing steadily but I lay the blame at Ashley's door.
In all fairness though, Bruce has done pretty well with the limited resources he has.
His biggest failing imho is his lack of tactical awareness.
Threadfin
12-12-20, 02:05 PM
So you think he is costing them points with his tactics?
Would be interesting where they'd be with this squad and Rafa still at the reins. Would they be further up the table? The squad doesn't ooze class, but they put in a shift.
Resources is right and if they spent on the same level of say Leicester or Wolves or even Villa! they might be in much better shape. They never seem to hit on the strikers they sign. Who is the last 15 league-goal scorer for Newcastle? Gayle in the Championship? Then you probably go all the way back to Shearer. Maybe Demba Ba?
Wilson's done OK, but he's already almost 30 isn't he? This is what Newcastle need. A reliable goal scorer and then they can push for Europe.
Or alternatively, they just need new ownership :)

Of course it is well known the Premier League and the big six clubs are happy to maintain the current status quo by refusing to allow the TOON to become Arab owned.

Eventually Newcastle will flirt with relegation once too often and down they'll go, once back down with the other stiffs its going to be a long time before they're back in the premier league, especially with Ashley in charge. :yep:
Is it Bruce, Ashley's or the players at fault, I would say they're all equally to blame, Bruce isn't a good manager, Ashley isn't a good owner and the players aren't much good either which is a bleeding recipe for disaster.
The management will have already seen the relegation writing on the wall this season and they'll be praying that those overpaid pillocks on the field can do something about it.
:hmmm: I think they'll survive this season but some major changes need to take place in the summer because next season.......who knows. :O:

The alternative being Fatty won't drop his price out of spite to the fans he knows revile him and TOON will end up like the mackems.
Either way I reckon cabbage heed will never get another opportunity to manage a Premiership club again.
He is currently on 57k a week and Fatty certainly won't want to pay out compensation when he is currently looking at his retail empire crumbling in front of his eyes.

Its not only his retail empire that's crumbling, you can add Newcastle football club to his list as well, this scenario always happens when things are going wrong.

From a supporter's perspective I am not in favor of this. It will remove some of what appeals to me about football. I won't go through the list, but as just one example, having the big teams out means no cup games for minnows against the traditional giants. Giant killings or no, these games have a romance about them, with just the gate from a small team's game at Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge potentially matching their wage bill for the whole year. And if that minnow wins.... New giants would emerge in the vacuum, but it would be bad in the short term.
From a pragmatic perspective I think these clubs should be able to do whatever they please. The notion of United or Liverpool being guardians of the game is archaic, but widely held. But the bottom line is that these are (mostly) privately held companies that should be free to pursue whichever path they decide is best for their self interests. As supporters we may recoil at the thought of a breakaway league, but it isn't up to us.
This idea of a super league has been around a long time. This isn't new, and shouldn't be as shocking as it seems to be. The only shock should be that Spurs are somehow in it :D
As I wrote on a friends wall
Even though most of us-those I know reject this idea I think we the football supporters, should be prepared for a Pan European League consisting of 3 to 4 divisions 16 to 18 team in each of them.
This as a substitute for CL and EL.
I guess the rules of advancement in such a league would probably be as in English football. Number 1 and the runners up in Champion goes directly up to Premier League and number 3 plays against the last team in PL.
To be honest I really don't know it's only a hunch I have.

If fans complain, I could accept that, indepedently form whether I agree or not.
What I cannot accept is that it is highly corrupt, money-greedy organisations like FIFA and UEFA (has no place here, but for the sake of competeness: the IOC) who push themselves for increasing the coin-mining, who complain about this - obviously money-greedy - initiative, set up threats, and obviously worry about their corruption monopoly.
I think we already have TOO MANY tournbaments and matches. The titles have become menaingless, if you inflate the number of tournaments endelssly, and the number of teams allowed.
At the end of such developments, you just get the typical cheap soup of the day: tasteless, overly salty, grey, and forgotten the moment the soup plate is taken away.
Its thw wrong people complaining about this. What FIFA and UEFA complain about is what they themselves are guilty of.
There was such a development in chess, aorund 20 years ago, or even longer. The FIDE, run by a Karpov-loyalist, was faced with a split of initiated by Kasparov, trying to establish an independent professional chess federation. It did not last for long, as I seem to recall.
I have a better idea. Dismantle FIFA and UEFA of all its current poerosneel and fat cats. imit staff ot just a fraction. Limit terms it can serve to just one or two. If two, it must be shorter terms. Install fincial limits from all beginning on: fees, boni, but also pric emoney - everything.
Another idea I sympathise with is to skip all that national team hokuspokus , and replace it with a one big, international Europe league.
My third idea would be to introeuce somethign like they have in Niortamericn sport sleagues: drafting system at the beginnign of a seaosn that are desoigned to allow weaker teams to pick stroinger players first. Can you imagien how BORING it is to always havew the same suspects sitting from begnning to end of the season on the top one or two ranks of the table?
I have stopped even taking note of the Bundesliga results. And when I see a picture ofn the National team, I do not think 2German team", sorry, biut am reminded of an international good will team selection. Plus they all are steamlined, politically correct, tame, lame, clean "Milchbubis". Identification value for me - and myn people more!! - is exactly ZERO. NILL. NONE. I just wait for the day they implement diversity quotas in team rosters, and mandatory gender starlets taking turns for the captain's rank.
I will enjoy the next championship, Löw's last one. I am hopeful for a merciless massacring of the Germans. I will find it most amusing.

Little to no credit will be given to Bruce by the fans because it was his woeful tactics and game management that got us where we were in the first place.
The credit goes to Graeme Jones who was specifically brought in to shore up the pathetic coaching and training setup that existed.

Liverpool had a poor first half of the second half of the season, so let's call it the third quarter haha. But they buckled down for the run-in and stole third at Leicester's expense. That's massive of course and despite their struggles at times they managed to do just enough. Champion's League is key.
Their title defense fell apart, and well done to City. But with a few good additions and a return of the first choice backline they should be in with a shout next season. Feels like Salah may leave for a new challenge, and the Reds could really use a proper number nine. I like Firmino, he does a lot of the little things well, but I think we could use a more clinical and prolific striker.
West Ham are team of the season for me.

Yep and it seems so unfair to the teams in it already. To suddenly have Inter or United or whatever underperforming giant fails to cut it in the group stage suddenly be thrown a lifeline as the biggest fish in the smallest pond pollutes the sporting nature of the competition, in my view.
The people running and broadcasting the EL like it because big names mean more money. But from a sporting point of view I'd like to see this changed. Lose and go home.
If I lived in a country where 1-4 of the top football team was directly qualified to CL then I also would like the way it is today.
But live and have family in countries where only the winner can go through many matches before they can be a part of this CL or EL.
Then you see things a little different-That is if you aren't a big fan of the teams who has qualified to CL.

I didn't want Villareal to win as much as I wanted United to lose. Too bad for De Gea, but he's on his way out anyway. This just cements it I reckon. He makes too much to be a number two, and it's difficult to ignore his decline in the past two or three seasons. With Henderson appearing to be winning the keeper battle I'd wager De Gea is departing, but most likely on loan due to his massive wage packet. He could be a full transfer, but United would need to sell at a discount to get another side to absorb that contract.
Epic shootout. I couldn't watch the match, but was following it on a live text feed and when they reached the tenth taker you knew keepers were next, and it was no shock that one of them missed. Credit to Villareal for getting it done. I'm not too keen on Emery, but this was his fourth EL title. That's really good.
On the other hand I would have been fine with United winning. I don't rate Solksjaer, I think he is out of his depth at United. He's done better than I would have thought, but him staying there is best from my point of view lol and winning the EL would have boosted his chances to remain in charge.
Woodward was a disaster, one of the worst sporting executives I've seen, and at the same time I had hoped he could continue there for years to come. His departure is the real downside to the Super League haha. All I can say is it was way past time for this move, but without the SL mess he'd probably remain. So United in a way lucked in to getting rid of him by making poor decisions. Keep him in marketing if you must, but he needs to be as far away from transfers and contracts as possible. Well, that's what I'd say were I a United supporter, which clearly, I am not.
United are in the Champion's League anyway, so no great disaster here, but some silverware always helps to paper over the cracks, and I think this makes it four years without any for them.

I heard Rashford say in an interview that they were so close to being the finished article, well to be that article they'd need to buy the whole Man City team because the current United team can't even beat a second tier Spain side. :haha:
11 individuals does not make a team Solskjaer, Pogba, Rashford, Fernandes and a few others disappeared when they were needed most, Cavani was in defence as much as he was up front and that just shows how weak United's team is. 4 players are required at United, a central defender, a central midfielder, a winger and a striker, and that little lot is not going to be cheap. oh and Solskjaer, make sure at least two of them are leaders because those pansies you've got at present will win you nothing. :haha:

I want to agree with what Moonlight wrote. I think United are several players (and a manager?) away from a title. But then they finished second. They finished second on goal difference too. In a sense, their results don't dovetail with my assessment of their squad. Did they overperform? Or am I underestimating them?
Champion's League qualification will help with recruitment, so let's see who they bring in, and who is leaving. I'd look to move Pogba and De Gea if I were them. One issue is they give contract extensions to players who maybe haven't earned them, and which were not pressing needs, such as Matic. But Woodward's gone (or going soon).
Their rivals will strengthen, Liverpool already did with Konate, which is a good signing, and assuming Van Dijk returns to his best, is a big improvement across the back. All teams will be affected by comings and goings, so let's see how the window goes.

Remarkable triumph for Chelsea. Not so much for the game, cup finals are a one-off and you never know. But it is remarkable considering where they were 6 months ago.
Chelsea have won two Champion's League titles, and both were during seasons where they sacked the gaffer half-way through. That's pretty remarkable too.
When they hired Tuchel I was skeptical. He had a pedigree, but he always struck me as a systems specialist, who maybe shrunk in charge of the biggest names and personalities. Tactically sharp, but meek, in a sense. But the effect he has had on Chelsea is massive. It was easy to see that Lampard was out of his depth, although I reckon he will come good as a manager with more experience. And to compare Tuchel's results with Frank's is night and day. After his arrival, they've barely conceded. More cohesive, better shape, and this is down to Tuchel.
On the other side, when I saw the team sheets my very first reaction is that (not for the first time) Guardiola was being too clever. De Bruyne as a false nine? No holding midefielder? I haven't seen every City match this season, but I do not recall a single match where either Fernandinho or Rodri wasn't slotted in front of the backline.
It all backfrired as City lacked any cutting edge. You cannot say this was entirely down to his selection and tactics -- like what has happened to Sterling? -- but I think he outfoxed himself and got it wrong.
I'm no Chelsea fan, but I was happy for Havertz who has had a tough season. That goal seals his spot in Blues' lore. It will be a massive lift for him and I expect next season he will be rampant. Chelsea have an imbalanced quad, and if they get it right with incoming and outgoing transfers they will be hard to beat next year. They will go hard for a big name striker this summer like Kane, Lukaku or Haaland. No guarantee they land one, but if they can convert their midfield riches (and Kepa) in to a world class striker and maybe a top centerback I like their chances to challenge for the league with Tuchel pulling the strings
Moonlight
05-31-21, 02:20 PM
^Yep, I wonder how many more seasons the owners are going to give him to win the CL, me thinks the heat is going to be ramped up on Gladioli.
As for Chelsea, a central defender and a striker is a must have, I still haven't seen Werner at his best, that's if he's got a best in him. Anyone else that Tuchel buys to improve the midfield will be a bonus, if they get those 2 or 3 players I'm expecting Chelsea to be a major force to be reckoned with next season.

Agreed. I suspect that Guardiola can stay as long as he wants to. But then you look over at Abramovich's ruthlessness and maybe start to think this could work at City too, and get them over the line. I suspect though, if Guardiola had just stuck to what had won them the title at a canter it may have seen them lift the trophy? It's all speculation for the wardroom at this point.
I'm guilty of this too, but for the longest time there has been a sentiment that in order to build success you NEED continuity. A manager in place for a long time, back room staff too. I mean it worked for Fergie right?
But Chelsea buck this trend and they have an enormous haul of silverware since Abramovich took over. And they change managers on average of one per season, seventeen since 2004. Even the 2008 CL final, when they lost to United, was a third CL-final year they changed managers during the season. It helps of course when the purse strings are so loose. I won't argue that they have not purchased their success, but they are hardly alone with big spending. Chelsea have been rewarded for their cutthroat approach and lack of manager sentimentality and perhaps there are other sides where this would pay off as well.

England boss Gareth Southgate to announce final 26-man squad at 5pm tonight.
It may prove interesting to see who he leaves out.
Moonlight
06-01-21, 03:11 PM
England's 26-man squad in full
Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Man Utd), Sam Johnstone (West Brom), Jordan Pickford (Everton)
Defenders: John Stones (Man City), Luke Shaw (Man Utd), Harry Maguire (Man Utd), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Kyle Walker (Man City), Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa), Reece James (Chelsea), Conor Coady (Wolves), Ben Chilwell (Chelsea), Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid)
Midfielders: Mason Mount (Chelsea), Declan Rice (West Ham), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Kalvin Phillips (Leeds)
Forwards: Harry Kane (Tottenham), Marcus Rashford (Man Utd), Raheem Sterling (Man City), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton), Phil Foden (Man City), Jack Grealish (Aston Villa), Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)
This is probably the weakest England team I've seen in a long time, based on fitness and form both Sterling and Rashford shouldn't have been picked and that cripple Harry Maguire should have been left at home as well.
The midfield are a bunch of lightweights, they're going to be torn to bloody shreds and what's with Southgate picking 4 rightbacks, what the hell is that all about. Remember the golden generation, well this lot are the brass tack generation who will come running back home to mummy quicker than Rooney's mob did. :O:

Good point about the rightbacks Moonlight. Although I have to say, were I TAA's manager I would be looking to convert him to a winger, a similar trajectory to how Bale's career progressed. Southgate won't want to be running such an experiment in a major tournament, or would he? :)
This is a pretty good England squad, depending on formation perhaps. But I agree too about that midfield. I think England will struggle against sides running more midfielders, such as 4-5-1 and variants (4-3-2-1, 4-4-1-1, 3-5-2, etc). England's midfield has potential to be overrun. Rice can be the destroyer I suppose, but that will be quite the load as I don't see much help from his midfield partners when off the ball.
Remember the golden generation, well this lot are the brass tack generation who will come running back home to mummy quicker than Rooney's mob did. This is the sort of analysis that is all too missing 'round here. Quite right mate.

The Police are now reporting that the banner threatening Rafa and his family (allegedly) was left at the wrong house in Caldy by the Scouse Mackems :haha:

Uefa rules allow countries to have a two-and-a-half-hour window on a weekend when games cannot be shown live on TV.
England has 14:45-17:15 BST as its blackout.
Sky Sports and BT Sport had to pick which September games would be moved for TV on 5 July - long before anyone thought Ronaldo would re-join United on deadline day.
Both broadcasters reportedly decided against trying to change their TV pick at late notice - if it would even have been possible to do so.
