Unbelievable. As crazy as the transfer window is, with all of these fantastic sums being thrown around, it is highly entertaining. And I'm always a bit sad when it closes.
Newcastle's sale of Sissoko is a masterstroke, and you have to hand it to Ashley (I know right?). To get that much for him is astonishing, although I suppose this sort of thing shouldn't surprise any more.
The £30m deal matches the fee Spurs paid Roma for Erik Lamela in summer 2013 and is the highest-ever fee involving a Championship club. And that's for a player that likely won't be first choice, and in a position they really didn't need to strengthen in my opinion. But it adds quality depth. When he's up for it anyway.
So many interesting moves yesterday. Wilshere, Hart, Luiz and on and on.
I'm a Liverpool supporter, and of course they had a poor window. Sane looks the business, but the failure to bring in a left back will reverberate at least until January. Milner's no left back. :/\\!!
Sunderland didn't buy a striker and I like to think that lot has just given up. You know who had a surprisingly good window and I tip to stay up? Boro. They aren't going about things like a promoted side.
The funniest moment for me was Schweinsteiger saying that staying at United was his 'dream'. Haha.

My pleasure, he only cost 5 million per goal. When you look at it that way it doesn't, err, well yes it does, doesn't it? Not our shining moment. But at least we also got Suarez in that window and he's been banging 'em in ever since hasn't he? For who, you say? Oh yeah, that's quite right. Hmmm, ok we'll call it a draw.

Just one of the lads.
Add that sum to the parachute payments and things are looking up around the Sports Direct Arena at St James Park presented by Wonga.com.
Now, to engineer a return to the top flight. If they can bounce right back up all's well. If they don't this season, then it becomes much more difficult. I like your chances though.

So much depends on Rafa but the club must take the position they are in with all seriousness less they remain in the Championship as long as Middlesbrough did....best I don't mention Leeds.

Piss poor England struggled to beat Slovakia 1-0 even after captain Martin Skrtel was sent off in the 57th-minute, A goal from Lallana (90'+5minutes) sealed a win for these over paid useless pillocks against a 10 man team of no hopers.
Allardyce claimed before the game that he might be satisfied with a draw against a Slovakian side who shut England out in a 0-0 group-stage draw at Euro 2016.
England's opening match under Allardyce was greeted with cries of "same old same old" from social media observers - and even those of us watching from close quarters in Trnava would have trouble making a case to the contrary.
Nothing's changed then, same old rubbish from the same rubbish players.

Sunderland to be relegated next season could be worth a punt, and I'll include them in a x bet and double with Newcastle to be promoted. :yep:
Hmmm I wonder what price they are, Sunderland 5/2 is the overall average and Newcastle is 8/13, its worth a £20 for a bit of fun me thinks.

I happen to like Mourhino. Can't say the same about his dirty rotten club of course. I take perverse pleasure in watching United fail. And the more it happens the better I feel. It's cathartic, innit?
But the man fixes blame everywhere but on himself. He's lost the plot a bit in the past few seasons, and sometimes he just has to admit he's got it wrong. United are unbalanced. And they've been that way for years now, even in Ferguson's final title winning season. Now how could a poor team win a title you might ask. Fair one I'd say, but that most infuriating season saw United scrape by, seemingly coming back in Fergie Time to nick the 3 points in every game. Sour grapes perhaps. But this team is out of balance and they need to recruit top players all over the pitch, not just in the final third.
I hope they continue to sign expensive attacking stars and rely on the likes of Rojo, Valencia and Smalling at the back. Once De Gea gets sick of it all they'll really be in a spot. though I will say that Eric Bailly looks the goods, a proper center half.
This team lacks width, creativity and some sort of cohesive plan.
On a brighter note, anyone catch the Liverpool match? What a rampant and fragile looking outfit they are. Irrepressible one moment, looking ready to cave in the next. So of course I suppose the fine win at the Bridge will be followed by a thrashing at home to Hull. That's LFC in a nutshell. If they can somehow find some resilience and consisitency, a backbone if you like, they could be a surprise package this year. Kiss of death, that is. Optimism will not be tolerated.

Well he made the choice, and I won't paint him as a victim, but I'd wager this is the small-time. There are much bigger fish to fry, as they say. Sure, England manager and all, so it's rather shocking and newsworthy. But as far as corruption in football goes this is nothing. And frankly, this 'looks' worse than it really is. But as England manager you need to keep it clean. He is stupid and greedy, but not a criminal (well at least in regards to this case).
But after lobbying so hard for so long for the post, he's just dumb for not walking the other way.

I had a quick search of the interweb looking for wage bills for the various clubs in the Championship. I'm curious to see it. I would guess that Newcastle have players that had no relegation wage clause so they're on Premier League wages. Like how much is Shelvey on for example, and how does Newcastle's wage bill compare to the other clubs in the league.
It happens that I watch a football match from the German 2nd or 3rd liga on some German TV-Channel
I would like to watch a English football match from the 2nd or 3rd liga.

Thanks Jimbuna. That last link is confusing. Is that 65 million the current wage bill? The article was written this year but lists the figures as being from 14/15.
I would imagine that in order to retain Rafa, Ashley needed to keep the team largely intact instead of having a sell-off. With parachute payments I suppose it's sustainable for this season at least. Wonder what would happen should they fail to gain promotion? Are the stands full for the Championship matches?
Jimbuna
09-30-16, 10:27 AM
Ashley made a profit of £30 million plus even after Rafa brought in 12 players of his own choosong so I should imagine both are happy, especially when taking into consideration Rafa is on £5 million a year (Allardyce as England manager was on 3£ million).
Failure to win promotion will mean Ashley decides whether to invest more or sell I should imagine.

Gareth Southgate, the England interim manager says he took over 'a mess' after Allardyce left following only one game in charge.
I can't disagree with him because England have seldom came up with the goods when it is asked of them.
His final two games in charge are at home to Scotland (the old enemy) in a world cup qualifier then four days later, at home to Spain in a friendly.
The month of November should prove interesting.

I decided to watch the last two England Internationals for a change and I wish I hadn't. In the 1st game it was a re-hash of the same old rubbish from the players and nothing new from Southgate, I gave them 3\10 and switched off just before half time.
In the 2nd game I gave them 5\10, not because they were better than the other team but because that midfield and the defence were doing everything they could to help the other team win.
It's a novel idea Southgate but trying to win a football match from 2 or 3 down is just not the way to win a match.
I don't know how much these England players are on but I would imagine it runs into nearly 2 million pounds a month or thereabouts, and just what do we get for all that financial outlay, the same old rubbish that we got in the World Cup and the same old rubbish from the Euro Championships.
Southgate may well be right that it was a mess after Allardyce left in disgrace, but I challenge him to name an England side that hasn't been running around like headless chickens for the last 20 years or so.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Of course it's a mess. It's England. Don't care to offend, so I won't say much, but I feel England has long overvalued it's football team's worth. That's rather delicately put, no?
Southgate is mitigating the hit on his rep. He's been with England since when? After leaving Boro? It's a cushy job managing the Unders, and if he doesn't get the full gig he's surely trying to protect his day job.
The real question is, if not him, then who?

Anyone's guess really. You might feel it's a bit of a catch-22. Anyone worthy already has a job. And I'd be wary of those who might throw their hats in the ring. The FA seems to need an English chap. If true, who? Pardew? Pulis? Curbishly? Maybe give 'Arry a go? Just effin run about lads. :haha:

Yes, with two points from nine played they are on relegation form, and by Christmas at this rate.
What a title race it's shaping up to be in the English top flight. A single point separates the top five. Liverpool briefly topped the table before settling into third on goal differential. They have calamity in them, but so far I really like what I see. Klopp has done wonders. Prior to his arrival, the side was listless and bereft of ideas. Now they are irrepressible going forward at times but always seem ready to concede. It's quite possible they go through the season without a clean sheet. They've taken 16 of a possible 18.
Watched the Chelsea-United match and enjoyed it. Mourinho is close to self-combusting. I wouldn't be surprised to see him just go up in a flash and be gone.

Yes, Sunderland are going down I'd say. They should have gone down in each of the last 5 or so seasons, but they've always found the escape route. perhaps they will again, but they need to start picking up points, and with the current lot I'm not sure how they'll do that. Moyes is doing his reputation no favors. He set the tone with some rather negative comments at the start of the season and that could not have helped.
United. I think we talked about it earlier in this thread around the start of the season. In my opinion United have serious balance issues. Who is the last established top-quality defender they've signed? Vidic?
Now name an established top-level attacker. Not so hard, that. They have little width, a suspect defense, no midfield enforcer and little creativity in the midfield. They are painful to watch, even for a neutral. Mourinho seems unable to establish any sort of identity or gameplan. He needs to figure it out and quick, as the season is slipping away, and they absolutely must qualify for the CL this year.
But you know what? Even with all of their on-field problems, if I were in charge at Old Trafford the first thing I would do is show Ed Woodward the door. I have no idea how this man continues in his post. There must be more to it than his ability to perform his duties. Like he has a lifetime contract or scandalous pictures of the Glazers or something. The mind truly boggles. That said, I enjoy their slide in to mediocrity, and long may it last.

Further rumours are circulating that the owner of Sunderland, Ellis Short is willing to sell the club for a price somewhere in the region of £160 million but one sticking point could be the additional payment of £70 million from any buyer should Sunderland avoid relegation at the end of the season.

I was watching the Chelsea v Hull game on tv yesterday and witnessed the accidental clash of heads between Ryan Mason and Gary Cahill.
Until recently, Ryan was fighting for his life but now appears to be stable after an emergency operation.
Ryan Mason is in stable condition after he underwent an emergency operation following after a sickening clash of heads with Chelsea defender Gary Cahill.
In a statement on Sunday evening, Hull said: "The club can confirm that Ryan Mason sustained a skull fracture in our fixture at Chelsea this afternoon.
"He was taken to St Mary’s Hospital where he has undergone surgery.
"Ryan is in a stable condition and is expected to remain in hospital for the next few days.
"Everyone at the Club would like to express their sincere thanks for the excellent and swift care given to Ryan by both the Accident and Emergency department and Neurosurgery Unit at St Mary’s Hospital."

There are 3 definite things going to happen at Arsenal this season.

Arsenal need a change in direction, I think that's fairly evident. Every year it's a question of mentality. That has to be down to the manager. And throw in some questionable recruitment leading to imbalanced squads and that's your recipe right there for fourth place. They have some fantastic footballers, but not all over the pitch.
If Ozil and Sanchez leave it will be very difficult to recover, and if Wenger is shown the door (or decides to walk through it on his own) I wonder where they will be a year from now.
They need two better strikers, and one of those needs to be world class. Giroud, Welbeck aren't the answer. even if Giroud impresses on occasion, it isn't often enough for a side with Arsenal's aspirations.
Ozil ghosts in and out of matches. On his day he might be the league's most creative force, but at times he is invisible. Sanchez is a full-run motor and losing him will see the side stripped of energy.
In addition, they need a midfield enforcer. Xhaka was to be that player but he is always a mad moment from a red.
I think if they keep Bellerin they're good at fullback. They need another top-class center-back as well.
As I've noted earlier in this thread I'm a Liverpool supporter, and that has it's own challenges, but it must be super frustrating to be an Arsenal supporter as they flatter to deceive each year only to have it all fall apart around the first knockout round.
Moonlight
02-16-17, 12:50 PM
I'm not a supporter of Arsenal either I just like the style of football they play, something's been missing from Arsenal since the invincibles team was broken up and the finger of blame is pointing in your direction Mr Wenger.
There isn't a manager in the UK who is strong minded enough to put things back to how they should be but there is one in Spain, whatever it'll cost to get him they must pay it because if they don't I can see Arsenal becoming just another mid table team in the near future.
if Diego Simeone cannot put a winning mentality into these players minds he'll get rid of them pretty damned quick, he'll sort the good from the bad and bring in the players that's needed to do things his way, that's what Arsenal need, a manager with plenty of backbone.
Highbury
02-16-17, 06:54 PM
One of the big problems in replacing Wenger is that his replacement will have to be a man of stature. No matter what the public thinks, players around the world seem to still respect him. Quite a few (including Ozil & Alexis) have claimed he was a reason they were willing to sign. If he is replaced by someone of middling reputation then many world class players would probably take a "wait and see" approach to the team for a few seasons.
Either way, I followed them before him or any of the current crop of players were around. I will still follow the team when they are all gone.

Only two kinds of people could say that...Man City fans, and Newcastle fans :)
Sunderland is poor. They started fairly brightly, Defoe hitting the upright. But they don't have enough in them. They're going down. But I have said that before.
'Pool sitting in fourth. Not bad, I'll take a CL place. Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool are all level on +24 GD. Problem is that mighty Burnley await and that's probably a defeat since the Reds seem to play to the level of their competition.
Looking at the fixture list it looks favorable. Only one match remains against the top six, and that's Man City at home in two weeks. The rest are against teams like Palace, West Brom and Ham, Watford and Stoke. Liverpool host the Merseyside Derby in 3 weeks.
That should be a comfortable run. But then again, it's Liverpool and I'm confident they'll find a way to lose 4 or 5 of those matches.

Umm, its Sunderland- Had to read your former comments about this team-I haven't been following English football that much, just how well or bad Newcastle is playing.
I have no possibility to watch The TOON playing or some other team This has something to do with the 4-6 TV-Channel that broadcast English football matches from England. Premier League or from Championship
In the end of last year Eurosport 1(I think it was) was sending a Newcastle match, 2 weeks later, another Sport channel was sending another Newcastle game. About 2 weeks ago a third channel had Newcastle as their main match of the day- If I have to follow Newcastle I have to pay for least 3-4 sport channels-No way.

Sunderland, or Mackems if you're a Geordie, are currently the bottom club in the English Premier League. They have like 19 points of a possible 81, netting 24 times against 50 conceded. They have won five matches, all season. Sunderland is the main rival for Newcastle, and visa versa.
My point, which was a joke anyway, was that only two kinds of people would be looking forward to this match. Man City fans, to watch their team win. And Newcastle fans, to watch their arch rivals lose.

Shields almost did not make it past the fourth round, but for a floodlight failure which forced the abandonment of the tie against holders Morpeth at a time when they were 4-2 down with nine minutes remaining.
They convincingly won the rescheduled fixture 4-0 Shenanigans!
Liverpool got a point yesterday against City. Lallana's miss was epic. I had to have another drink after that one, so it wasn't all bad.
United have two games in hand, but Liverpool's run-in is a far easier prospect on paper. But that clearly discounts their maddening tendency to play down to their competition. I envision many hairs pulled and falling short of fourth by a point, followed by a summer of failed recruitment since there is no CL on offer.

Sunderland stay rooted to the bottom of the Premiership after an expected defeat to Leicester.
Tonight Hull play Middlesbrough and a win for either side will further destroy any chance of Sunderlands survival hopes.
Brighton won last night to go top of the Championship but TOON play lowly Burton tonight and shouls win to retake top spot (ever the optimist).

Good to see the referee later had the bottle to admit he was wrong and offer his apologies (see the link below).

TOON totally outplayed and outclassed Leeds last night but were held to a 1-1 the Leeds equaliser coming in the 95th minute :o
Lesson learned: Don't make more of your chances and risk losing the initiative.
Brighton are now four points clear at the top so the title is theirs to lose.
TOON are eight points clear of third placed team (Huddersfield) so hopefully they will maintain second place to the end of the season.

I went to a pub to watch it and have to agree. Magpies ruled the field. Luckily for Leeds it is goals that count. Could be very important point.
At least I manged to get that noisy karaoke bar silent for a second by jumping up screaming after Woods scored the equalizer...

Or will he be accused personally ?

The manager is not involved Markus, it is a matter involving the clubs and the agents:
Secret payments made to players and agents are the focus of a tax fraud investigation by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), say French authorities.
It is suspected that serious tax fraud was committed during the transfer of players between French and Premier League clubs.

£100 million for 6-8 players and the Toon should avoid a relegation scrap if its spent wisely, Ashley will have to dig even deeper if a UEFA cup place is next seasons requirement and I have my doubts if Ashley has got the balls to go for that one.

I watched the Champions League final last night, Real Madrid beat Juventus 4-1 to retain the cup, what are the chances of any British club having a decent chance of beating that team.
Its looking pretty bleak if you ask me, so it looks as though its going to be a last 16 or if they get a lucky draw a quarter final place before they're sent packing from the competion once again.
my predictions before the 2 Manchester clubs go on the usual massive spending spree.
Tottenham, maybe a last 16 place.
Liverpool, maybe a last 16 place.
Man Utd, maybe a last 8 place.
Man City, maybe a last 8 place.
Chelsea, maybe a last 8 place.
Premier League championship predictions.
1- Man City.
2- Man Utd.
3- Chelsea.
4- Arsenal
5- Liverpool.
6- Tottenham.
I won't be changing this selection as the buying spree has already started, Liverpool and Tottenham are going to be the losers in the money game and if Arsenal don't keep Sanchez and Ozil they'll be swapping places with the 5th or 6th placed teams.

What league placing would you predict for the TOON?
Rafa won't want a relegation scrap that's for certain, if Mike Ashley puts his hands in his pockets and digs deep Rafa will do the rest.
So on that basis I'll go for a mid table spot for the Toon, somewhere around the 12 to 14 placings, if Ashley thinks he can get away with doing things on the cheap though I can see the Toon being in a relegation scrap and I can also see Rafa waving goodbye.

At a recent Tyne Wear derby, Rafa Benitez goes into the changing room to find all his squad looking a bit glum. "What’s up?” he asks.
“Well, we’re having trouble getting motivated for this game. We know it’s important but it’s only Sunderland and we can’t be bothered, we always beat them”.
Rafa looks at them and says, “Well, I reckon I can beat these by myself, you lads go down the pub.”
So Rafa goes out to play for Newcastle by himself and the rest of the team go off for a few beers. After a few pints they wonder how the game is going, so they get the landlord to put the television on. A big cheer goes up as the screen reads “Newcastle 1-0 Sunderland (Benitez 10 minutes).” He is beating Sunderland all by himself!
Anyway, a few more pints later and the game is forgotten until someone remembers “It must be full time now, let’s see how he got on.”
They put the TV on. “Result from St James' Park: Newcastle 1 (Benitez 10 minutes) - Sunderland 1 (Cattermole 89 minutes).”
They can’t believe it; he has single-handedly gotten a draw!! They rush back to St James' Park to congratulate him. They find him in the dressing room, still in his gear, sat with his head in his hands. He refuses to look at them. He says, “I’ve let you down, I’ve let you down.”
“Don’t be daft, you got a draw, all by yourself. And they only scored at the very very end!” the players say.
To which Rafa replies: “No, No, I have, I’ve let you down… I got sent off after 12 minutes”

My assessment of Newcastle for this season will be a neutral and brutal one.
For a start you can get used to results like the one above because its going to be the norm for the rest of the season, I'll also predict that Rafa will be gone or going before this season ends, Rafa needed at least 5 quality players to stave off relegation and you've not got even one through the door and signed up.
The ones you have signed are not the game winners that are needed and they are not blood sweat and tears players either, they'll go AWOL more often than not and they're going to be more of a liability than an asset.
The transfer policy at Newcastle is an absolute joke with not one new player bringing any quality to the side, as I predicted earlier Mike Ashley is going to do it on the cheap and its going to end up being a relegation scrap from start to finish for the Toon.
Most teams are going to put the welcome mat out for Newcastle this season and then they're going to take the 3 points off of you, I'm going to stick my neck out and predict that Newcastle will finish in the bottom 5 this season with the team struggling to get 10 to 12 wins under their belts.
I thought that Newcastle with the best squad in the Championship last season were gifted it more than won it, its not going to happen this season.
Welcome to the Premiership. :D

World and European cup games that England are not a part of + the odd F.A cup match are the only games I'll watch, and even then they only get half an hour, if they aren't entertaining they are switched off.
