A decent fan made trailer for this quite moving film.

Based on a story by Rudyard Kipling about Afghanistan and beyond.

I feel it should be paired with "The Wind and the Lion" that came out the same year ( I think ).

Both movies about empires and the men who built them.

What do you mean by 'not too particular?' Do you think his overall list of movies include too much or too little .... what? :shucks:

As for myself, I find the majority of movies he's been in since Forrest Gump (1994) have been not only good but meaningful. Granted, there are the movies made for kids like Toy Story and such (if voice acting is to be considered) but even those are good for their niche.

But I found Hanks to be good and in many cases of kindred spirit in:

Nothing in Common (with Jackie Gleason) (1986)
A League of Their Own (1992)
Apollo 13 (1995)
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
The Green Mile (1999)
Cast Away (2000)
Charlie Wilson's War (1997)
Larry Crowne (2011)
Captain Phillips (2013)
Saving Mr. Banks (2013)
Bridge of Spies (2015)
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)

I've even enjoyed his more light-hearted comedies, such as:

The Man With One Red Shoe (1985)
The Money Pit (1986)
Dragnet (1987)
The Burbs (1989)
Joe Vs. The Volcano (1990)
Sleepless in Seattle (RomCom) (1993) One of my wife's favorites
That Thing You Do (1996)
Catch Me If You Can (2002)

And there's a few movies I've left out.

And I'm looking forward to seeing Greyhound and News of the World. :shucks:

How much I loved that movie when I was a small boy! How much I had a crush on Elisabeth Taylor as a small boy! Only matched Deborrah Kerr as Lydia in Quo Vadis on whom I also had a crush as a small boy! :yeah:
I stopped playing as Ivanhoe when George Lucas made me stretching my arms to both sides, making me flying as an X-wing fighter through the streets. I finally found that Darth Vader was my most favourite character, and with that my long voyage to the dark side of things was completed. My antipathy for the EU has its roots here. BTW, I had a crush on Carrie Fisher as Leia, too, when I was a not so small boy anymore.

^ Good on you Sky. "Ivanhoe"'s a real Classic. Very dramatic, and full of "old fashioned virtues".

I admire your passion for where you live. It's a beautiful area. I too love my city - Sydney, and am heartbroken to see it being ruined by a Woke city council.

I had a bit of a crush on Joanna Pettet from "Casino Royale ( 1967 ) and "Night of the Generals". Loved her sexy voice. :)

Cheers. :)

"Lord Jim". A man seeks to redeem himself. And co starring the lovely Daliah Lavi in her black pyjamas.

Some action from the 1965 movie filmed in Cambodia. A pity the clip ends abruptly...but them's the breaks I guess.

The new "Dune" movie was released down here today. I haven't seen it yet, but the reviews all say that it's very much "Style over Substance".

Rumour has it that there's more "Dune" movies in the offing. So it's gonna be a franchise like "Star Wars" or "James Bond" ?????? :dead::dead:

I'll give a proper review once I've seen it myself.

"Hidden Figures tells the story of three African-American women who worked as computers to solve problems for engineers and others at NASA. For the first years of their careers, the workplace was segregated and women were kept in the background as human computers."

They effectively brought the US astronauts into space, and to the moon.

"Dune" 2021. A review by me :)

Ok, where to start? I must admit I was somewhat hesitant to see this flick.....but I'm glad I did. Wow, it lives up to the hype and then some. The only negative aspect was the sound level, it was beyond Industrial levels almost painful - earplugs definitely required ( no joke ).

A bit of a preamble....

My interest in Dune began in the early '70s, with the original books. I was heavily studying Sassanid Persian History and Art at the time. So the early Dune books with their Feudal/Imperial Desert setting, and the cover art by Bruce Pennington really clicked, as they say.

Then after the early books came "The Dune Encyclopedia" ( almost worth it's weight in gold now ), then the David Lynch movie - unfairly heavily panned by critics. I love it, it's come into it's own now.

Then came the co authored books...for a new generation. Then the mini series/s, and lastly the new "Dune" movie just released.

Both movies are very good. But the new one is outstanding.

Great casting/acting. Faithful to the storyline, Dune fans know all the ins and outs and background. Sweeping, gorgeous settings. Costumes

Not too much technology, it's post Butlerian Jihad after all. The 'thopters are beautiful :)

Seeing as it's only part one a lot of characters are yet to be introduced.

At almost 3 hours it's long and bladder challenging:oops:

No spoilers. If you're a Dune fan go and see it, but take ear plugs.

^ Thank you for the summary. Missed it in the theaters, but i will have to see it!
I also read through Herbert's books in the 1970ies, he sure imagine-built a whole world with all the small details, a work comparable with Tolkien's Lord of the rings, but in the future...
Always thought of the "Fremen" as being like the muslims, the story sometimes mirrors the situation in the middle east.

OT: Funny enough my first book from Herbert was "Fenian Ram S1881" (the submarine from Frank Herbert’s 1956 novel "The Dragon in the sea" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dragon_in_the_Sea)) about a special nuclear sub 'tug' sneaking into enemy waters to pump oil and bring it back to the US. Thought it to be a quite tense and immersive psychological thriller back then..

Traitors? To whom?

Though this whole picture does not hold water. Bedouin tribes were constantly harrassing jewish settlements, a few germans detached to the Ottoman forces were the only ones who put up some kind of defense for the settlements.
And what some of the Australian light brigade (or New Zealanders?) seem to have done later was nothing heroic.

@tmccarthy the report about the film making of "Apocalypse now" was real interesting, one of the iconic and defining films about the Vietnam war, while indireclty based on one of my favourite stories by Korzeniowsky/Conrad.

I love that movie!

On the weekend, I finally watched Dune on the big moviescreen at Imax Cinema in Darling Harbour, Sydney - via VR, since the cinema has been demolished already 6 years ago.

Two tings.

First, my new headset, a G2 Reverb, worked wonders: no visible pixels anymore, no screendoor effect. Really impressively good picture and render quality, I was blown away. This solution can replace a visit in the movies, really. The screen in this setup is really big.

Second, the movie, on such a huge screen, is visually very impressive. But it is a movie that definitely needs the big and superbig screen, else it probably must dissapoint a bit, since the acting leaves a bit to be desired. The movie is more a visual and atmospheric experience, which in case of this movie is more or less one and thew same, not so much a narration experience.

The movie btw has safely passed the financial threshhold criterion, so it is confirmed that the second part of the book also will be turned into a movie, to be released in October 2023, actually Villeneuve is already working on it since several months, it just was not clear if the financial profit would be such that Warner gives the final green light. Well, it has given the Go now. Villeneuve even mentioned a solid chance for a third part, telling the second novel's story, "Dune Messiah", which fans often see as the third part of the main novel anyway. It indeed would make sense.

Covid hampered the cash profit, however, and I absolutely doubt that Warner will ever consider again a simultaneous start of a major blockbuster in cinemas and on its streaming platform, it showed to be a lousy idea. Profit margins would have been much bigger without that Streaming nonsense decision. For cewrtaion legal and contract reasons regadrign their advertsing for abonements, they must fulfill some obligations with releases just around the corner, but after these have been done, they will retire this model, I am certain.

I liked Blade Runner 2 much better, had it getting under my skin, Dune did not manage that. But it is a solid and visually impressive work that faithfully sticks to the novel. Just why Liet Kynes, a white male in the book, must be turned without need or gain into a black woman, is beyond me. We can guess: PC, appeasement of the woke movement and compliance with quota demands of the gender and anti racism league etc etc. Beside this fumble: recommended.

Me too these days only go to the cinemas with earplugs. Else the insane volume sends my skull at all directions simultaneously.

Not sure you understood me correctly. The cinema does not exist anymore, I did not go there and watched a VR movie there, but I visited the cinema via VR, in a model of the former main showroom. ;)

The IMAX cinema, I read at least, was demolished in 2016.

I prefer this setting in VR, since it offers the biggest, moviescreen I know in VR. I have some smaller movie halls for VR as well, however, for smaller, less blockbusteresque films. WEatchign them in VR this way really is a good idea. No oversized TV and no projector can compete with the display size!

Sky Captain, I know what you mean. What you listed, plus the visual comic style of 50s pulp magazine SciFi, and then this name (in the German dub at least): Polly Perkins!

Its just a movie that makes you feel like a little boy again, breathing the air of some Ray Bradbury stories, maybe.

Average joe mechanic has a classy girlfriend. She thinks he's unromantic and leaves him. He tries to win her back from his rich mate. An old story I know but this is very well done and quite original with many plot twists and genuine cliff hanger ending.

Good film ^. You can't go wrong with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland.

They made a lot of films together, and she fancied him like crazy.

During the filming of Robin Hood, during a kissing scene, she kept deliberately fluffing her lines so she could kiss Errol Flynn over and over again. The poor guy got a massive erection in his Robin Hood tights and they had to stop filming for the day.

Some bits and pieces from "The Vikings" 1958.

Bit of a theme going in this clip.

And another great scene from same movie. Kirk Douglas.... Great actor.
