Then, I'm not the only one to think so about the movie. The buildup and hype way out stripped the actual movie, itself. I thought it was a little too long and, in some places, a bit too incredulous. I didn't see it on a big screen, saw it on a DVD I got from the local library; maybe it was more impressive twenty feet or so high...

I hope your hospital stay wasn't for something serious and that your are doing well now; keep well...

"Frauelein Doktor". A great film starring real pro actors, Kenneth Moore, Suzy Kendall, Capucine, James Booth, Nigel Green ( what a physical "presence" - "the elephant in the room" ).

Beautiful music by Ennio Morricone, the Yugoslav Army for the battle scene, great script, and quite moving at the end, no spoilers.

But virtually impossible to obtain a copy. About the only place you can see it is on youtube, and there's a voice/synch glitch from 1/2 way onwards.

But still well worth watching. 10/10 from me.

Not worth it. The old one from the 80's is much better.

Today I looked at those two movies at the IMDb and I do understand why the new one got so bad points.

Film inspired by a real event in WW2, a single KV-1 tank stopped the german advance for a day.

I already read about this incident in Len Deighton's "Blood, tears and folly" (excellent book about WW2 already from 1993 b.t.w., putting Churchill and the british bomber command where they belong, with only a few mistakes)

If you want excitement you can't go past this 1970 adaptation of the Harold Robbins bestseller.

3 hours of Revolution, Hedonism, Great photography, soundtrack, and bad reviews. Not fair really, To squeeze the story into 3 hours was a "big ask" and Lewis Gilbert did a fine job.

Just watched a movie on the Sony Channel (free channel now on the Dish Network along with Showtime and The Movie Channel)

It was sure good ... Mean and nasty Gene Hackman at his best

The Quick and the Dead is a 1995 American Revisionist Western film directed by Sam Raimi, and starring Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio. The screenplay was written by Simon Moore but includes contributions from Joss Whedon. The story focuses on "The Lady" (Stone), a gunfighter who rides into the frontier town of Redemption, controlled by John Herod (Hackman). The Lady joins a deadly dueling competition in an attempt to exact revenge for her father's death.

Saw the new JOKER film the other day. Holy **** it was good, was definitely not expecting that! I don't know what it is about the character that brings out 'the best' from an actor, but Phoenix is so damn good as Arthur (aka Joker). I'm almost wishing there will be a sequel to it just to see Phoenix portray Arthur/Joker again!

PS. It's not a superhero movie if you're not into those. It could have been a completely independent movie with no ties to the Batman universe had they chosen so. :yeah:

Watched The Hunt last night, Hilary Swank and Betty Gilpin played their roles ok but the film script needed fleshing out a lot more, infact it needs a total bloody rewrite in my opinion.
I expected a lot more blood and guts than what was on offer to be honest, surely someone with half a brain could have made the script better than what it was, but this is Hollywood for you, even their blockbusters are bleeding rubbish, as it was it was a complete bloody let down for me.

Film got 5\10 and I'm being bleeding kind to it here.

Hilary Swank and Betty Gilpin, I've never seen anything they've been in before and I thought yep they did ok with that awful script. 7\10

What really perked my interest in this film was when Betty appeared, I'm not sure if those two things on her chest are real but they were the stars of this show for me, anyway I award those two breast in show 8\10.

Yes you bloody numbnut but is it worth watching, yeah, but just the once..... or maybe twice if you think you missed something really really important. :D

^ Yep, one of the most violent western movies of its time and it still ranks high today.
I can't imagine the reaction from the audience when they were watching that movie at the cinema in 1969, an eye opener for sure, I bet no one fell asleep either.

Additional information to my last post in this movie thread

It was a good movie, this Brightburn.

Take the movie the Good Son pour some more evilness into this young boys mind and then give him superpower like Superman.

I would recommend this movie.

An Oldie but a Goodie.

One of my all-time favorites, bought the DVD immediately when it was released; probably Tony Randall's best film and George Pal's pre-CGI stop-motion animations were always a joy to view, not to mention a joyful viewing of a young and very, very beautiful Barbara Eden...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtJHRAbQczY

The film received Oscar nominations for the animation work and an honorary Oscar was awarded for the make-up work done on Tony Randall's character(s)...

Also one of my favorites, yet I somehow forgot about it until these mentions and trailers. At the time I didn't know who Tony Randall was, or Barbara Eden. This was long before I Dream Of Genie and The Odd Couple. Eden was also in the original movie version of Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.

Randall's acting and makeup here are simply and truly amazing.

My other fav film is "Frauelein Doktor" with Suzy Kendall, Nigel Greene, Kenneth Moore, and James Booth.

Its been all over the local entertainment news here in LA about Tom Hank's disappointment his movie Greyhound will not get a proper big screen, movie theater release and is, instead head to direct streaming on Apple TV+; Hanks appears to have been put in a position to have to go along with Sony Pictures' deal to sell the movie rights to Apple for USD $70 Million, an approximately 40% initial return on the USD $50.3 budget of the film...

One thing I wasn't aware of was Tom Hanks actually had been working on the project for about a decade and even wrote the adapted screenplay for the film himself, so the project was bit of a labor of love for him; in the interviews I heard, Hanks said he had envisioned and set up the film to be a big screen production taking full advantage of the scale of movie theater screens and sound systems, so streaming to smaller screen devices is a let down...

I've got to say, for a film that revolves around naval warfare and with the attendant CGI necessary to pull off a good rendition, a USD $50.3 Million budget is a bargain; I'm gonna guess Hanks didn't ask for his usual star salary...

The film is getting some very good reviews, so I'm hoping it will finally get a theatrical release after the lock down is over...

The thing that I find most disturbing about the way major films and stars are going directly to the various streaming service is the public is now being edged out of seeing films they might really want to see because they would have to subscribe to a streaming service to see a given film; the cost of the varying services would mean consumers would have to spend considerable amounts of money just to cover the possibility of seeing any or all of the various releases; if you want to see, say, Das Boot 2020 you have to subscribe to Apple+; if its a Disney film, then you need a subscription to Disney+, as so n and so on, accruing a substantial monthly/annual bill just to keep the possible bases covered...

The old major studios tried to 'corner' the theater market decades ago by buying/building theaters across the US, branding them with their name, and making them the exclusive venues for their releases, forcing out the smaller, independent theaters, and setting the scene for a possible rigging of ticket prices; the Federal government stepped in and passed legislation to force the studios to divest themselves of their self-owned theaters and keep the market competitive for all theater owners; the way things are progressing with the streaming services, some similar sort of solution may be required...

It used to be in the past few decades before streaming, films had a theatrical run and then went to either cable TV release or VHS/DVD rental, so at least the public had at least a couple or so ways of seeing releases, but now, if you are a streaming service subscriber for a particular release, you're out of luck; as time goes on and streaming services get more and more proprietary about their 'content', they are less likely to want to issue the releases as DVD/BDs, etc., since the want to milk every little cent out of their customers as possible; there was a similar sort of situation in the VHS heydays when the studios would only provide a limited number of tapes for rental and not for sale to the public; in some cases, you could buy a copy of a recent release tape, but the price hovered at about the USD $ 100+ pricing level and it usually took at least a year before the tapes for newer releases were issued in mass at far lower prices'...

I just checked on Amazon and the Complete first season of Das Boot became available on DVD last Nov 2019, a full year after its streaming release, so it could be estimate the DVD relase for Season Two will be around Apr 2021...

On the matter of Greyhound earning money, it is an old Hollywood metric that a film doesn't really turn a profit until its gross receipts exceed an amount twice its actual cost, so the film is still a bit of a ways to go to attain profitability, an amount of over USD $100 Million; Hanks, and his fellow producers, however are making some money since producers are paid an upfront fee out of te budget at the start of the filming; they also have percentage shares of the revenue, some from the gross 'first dollar' receipts and others from the proceeds/profits after expenses have been met and paid; Hanks, though, also gets a fee for adapting the screenplay with the amount dependent on the nature of his contract...

"Why on earth are there so much excellent Science fiction books, but so much SciFi trash movies?"

Well this film is an exception

The real reason for all the trash sci-fi movies is that the studio execs and, in many cases, aren't really sci-fi fans and are really only interested in the money side rather than the art side of their projects; how many time have there been articles about a sci-fi film being panned critically because of miscasting, failure to remain faithful to the source text, or having a less than knowledgeable director all because some studio exes wanted a 'sure bet' box office star over a lesser star with better appreciation for the part, changes to scripts to either ease expenditures, ease marketing concerns, or meet the demands of an already miscast star (or director), or hired a director not because he was better fit for the project and understood the source, but more because he was a 'bankable' personality the studio hoped would be able to repeat his/her previous successes in other genres...?...

Films like Star Wars, ET, and 2001 were successes because all the elements were in the hands of their creators and not being derailed by corporate bean counters...

One of Kurosawa's finest films; he had fallen on hard times since Japanese film studios were wary of Kurosawa's penchant for wanting full control over his films, never a selling point for studio head bean-counters, and, in despair of ever being able to direct again, he attempted suicide; MosFilm, the USSR film studio, heard about Kurosawa's troubles and also heard about Kurosawa's expressed interest in filming a version of the Russian memoir Dersu Uzala, a project idea he had abandoned years before because he wanted to film the story on actual locations in Siberia, something Japanese studios considered too expensive and too difficult to obtain needed permissions; MosFilm's offer to produce the film renewed Kurosawa's spirits and career' it should also be noted the name of famed Hollywood producer Roger Corman appears in the above trailer; he helped secure US distribution for the film...

Years later, George Lucas would hear Kurosawa was again having difficulties getting his films made; Lucas was riding on the crest of his first Star Wars picture, which was inspired by Kurosawa's film The Hidden Fortress; Lucas used his newfound pull in Hollywood and, along with another rising director, Francis Ford Coppola, found backing for new Kurosawa projects as a means of sort of repaying the artistic debt they felt they owed Kurosawa; other Hollywood directors and stars would also pitch in to back Kurosawa's later works, including Steven Spielberg who partially financed Kurosawa's last films...

Although mainly known for his Samurai films like The Seven Samurai, Ran, Sanjuro, and Yojimbo, Kurosawa had a flair for capturing the smaller scale 'epics' of modest human interaction like Dersu Uzala; one of his greatest such films is Ikiru (To Live), the story of an aging low level bureaucrat who has faithfully worked at his job for over thirty years and receives a diagnosis of about a year left to live; virtually ignored by his family and a cypher to his coworkers, he sets out, alone, to try to make sense of the purpose of life; the film really captures the torment and realization of the main character; I first saw this film in the early 70s on PBS; a film well worth seeing...

Indeed. Two years ago I decided to see several Japanese films, re-seeing a few and seeing others for the first time. Ikiru was one of those I saw for the first time. Incredible film, the bureaucracy of japan the struggle of the main character.

Saw several of the samurai: Hara-kiri, Sword of Doom and others.

High and Low was a surprise, great film by Kurosawa. I liked to see the actors that always portrayed samurais in a contemporary film.

vienna
07-14-20, 07:11 AM
I got lucky when I moved to LA in 1970; there were four or five Japanese film theaters here, most of them controlled by the major Japanese film studios (Toei, Toho, etc.) and they showed a wide mix of films, form the very latest to revivals of older releases; one theater, the Linda Lea, had triple bills all the time, changing weekly, with an old samurai film (known as chambara) as the opening film, followed by a Yakuza film, followed by a modern exploitation film, usually of a titillating nature; the other theaters shied away from the more 'risque' releases and showed either classics or films currently popular in Japan. I spent many, many hours watching some of the very best and some of the worst of Japanese cinema; now, due to home video and streaming, the theaters are long gone and the chances to see, on a big screen, some of those are few and far between...

Re High and Low: the film is a sort of reversal for Kurosawa who had many of his films remade by US filmmakers; Kurosawa based his film on US author Ed McBain's novel King's Ransom...

One of the most spectacular Japanese films ever made was 1965's Kwaidan, a collection of four traditional ghost stories masterfully brought to life and filmed by director Masaki Kobayashi; its sort of a Twilight Zone anthology that is at the same time very creepy and astonishingly beautiful and well worth seeking out on video:

The Red Badge of Courage (1951) is my 2nd favourite film of all time. Brilliant script adapted from Stephen Crane's novel and great characterisations from all the cast. It has such a look and feel of documentary like realism in many parts, particularly the battle scenes, and a marvellous and engaging spirit throughout.

It's interesting to note that feedback from the initial screenings was extremely poor, and this forced MGM to heavily cut director John Huston's film down from 2 hours to a mere 69 minutes. Huston had no input into this as he was at that time heavily engaged in making his next picture, The African Queen. It was upsetting for him as he considered the original 2 hour version the best work of his career to date. Even in its heavily cut edition, the film was poorly received by audiences of the day who were generally confused by it, and the film recorded a substantial loss.

Much later, both Huston and the film's leading star, Audie Murphy, attempted to re-acquire the omitted footage to restore the original version, but were both unsuccessful. Eventually, MGM claimed that the footage had been lost, most likely destroyed in a fire. We can only imagine what the rest of the film would have been like.

Interesting info:Kaleun_Salute: I didn't know that Houston's film had been cut down by the studio. That reminds me of the story from Taxi Driver.
