I did watch the original on the big screen years back. That was a peculiar experience. I don't think many of us had seen it before so we wouldn't really know how it went. To the rescue: They handed us all a transcript of all the dialogue with cues on when to bring out the umbrella, when to shout whateve, when to throw the rice and so on.... way to go eh. Bet those regulars who DID come up with the shenanigans after seeing the same movie every week for more than a decade would give us that respectful nod... yeah right :haha: Fun movie but no need to fake an in-the-know when we never saw the flick before.
Not a movie, but found out about this:

There were loads of good war films made when I was a kid using post-war tanks and planes painted grey with German crosses on (most famously The Battle of The Bulge) yet nowadays, despite access to and use of, wonderful authentic hardware, you often still end up with a crappy film with poor acting, script, direction, SFX and especially location. The equipment is most definitely not such an important aspect, is it?
Now a question: has anybody seen this http://i.imgur.com/coea8j3.jpg (Also known as The Misfit Brigade)
and is it from the old-school of thick-eared Dirty Dozen style war films? Made in 1987.

Watched two films on YouTube today, first up Breakthrough sequel to Cross of Iron which was alright as I was expecting it to be a pile of rubbish. Granted no where near the level of Cross of Iron. And The Bunker Antony Hopkins as Adolf Hitler, not bad for its time but clearly no where near the updated German version Downfall which was far more closer to the events of the time.

I don't even know how they can possibly make a proper ending for the Rebuild series after the third movie. Though I suppose that with 4.0 or 3.0+1.0 or whatever now being years overdue again and considering Eva never had a proper ending to begin with, the people making these movies probably don't know either.

Indeed, I know it took a while for the English dub of 3.033333r01 to come out because, well, basically the translators had no idea what to do with it, so they had to work with Studio Khara to translate it properly.
As for 3+1=Third Impact, God alone knows how that'll go, maybe Anno will get creative and bring Godzilla in as the leader of the Angels since he's currently working on the new Godzilla film. Or he'll go off his meds again and we'll get a High School alternate universe with no ink. :hmmm:  :dead:

I'd wager he was on a cocktail as it'll explain what happened to the budget of the last few episodes of the original series.

I remember the discussion about the series being "based" on the death sea scrolls. Even if they did use some of that as a background, that ending is completely wacko. We know how are the Japanese in any matter, even so, this series takes the prize.

Reminded me of the Mel Gibson movie Ransom.
Saw Legend last night! I enjoy it, but I know little of the Kray brothers history, besides the documentary I saw in Ethel the Frog.
I know the film glamorizes/romanticizes their history and for a movie about two violent gangsters, it has only 2 violent scenes...
But I like the 60's British décor, the special effects of the same actor interacting with him and the support cast is good, we have Merlin as a driver and future brother-in-law, Vision has a rival gangster chief and the 9th Doctor has Harry "Snapper" Organs.
And of course, 2x Tom Hardy as the Piranha...errr the Kray brothers. Pitty that they didn't show any one being nailed in head or Spiny Norman! :D
I must watch that one of these days, and 'The Krays' with the Kemp brothers in, that was meant to be a good one. :yep:

The ratings on iMDB are next to useless. Check their Top 250 for example, lots and lots of movies in there that don't even deserve to be in the top 1000 in my opinion and besides that, we do live in times were trash like the Transformers movies, even the one with Walberg, gross over a BILLION per movie, which is something ~25 movies did in all movie history.
This alone speaks volumes.
The problem with iMDB is that it turned into an uncontrolled/unmoderated troll-paradise a long time ago, where every meat-bag is allowed to vote.
If you check the ratings in detail, you will find a huge amount of 10 or 1 ratings, aka idiot-ratings from people who either have an agenda, often politically motivated, or people who simply do not grasp anything but extremes, so a realistic rating is hardly represented.
If you want to know if the movie will please you, check some reviews, these often contain little details that, at least for me, are really helpful.
Just try to keep away from review sites that are known to shift towards political agendas as well, like buzzfeed. These are cancer.
Man, its your money and who knows, maybe you'll love it, I'm not in your skin. But I can not stress enough how bad this movie is. The money could be spend in so many better ways.
Like... Burn it in your hand and admire the colors of the flames - worth more than having to endure this pile of dung.
In any way, let me know how it went (either the movie or burning the money).
Could be problematic if he's paying in coins... :hmmm:
Or by card, they tend to need a fair bit of heating before they get going...
Probably just easier to see the film.
In keeping with the thread's topic, the whole idea of film criticism, or any criticism in general, by the public at general, reminds me of a scene from a Marx Brothers' movie, Coconuts. In one scene, Groucho and Chico Marx are tasked to go to a a barn. As they enter, the conversation goes like this:
Chico: Hey, I thought we were supposed to look for a barn.
Groucho: This is a barn.
Chico: This is no barn; it smells like a stable.
Groucho: Well, if look at it, it's a barn; if you smell it, it's a stable.
Chico: Well then, let's just look at it.
General film criticism follows along the same course: some people will see the same film and some of them will see a barn while the rest will smell a stable...

I saw The Legend Of Tarzan yesterday. My opinion is that if you are an Edgar Rice Burroughs fan, you'll like it. Not a great movie by any means, but fun. It's not completely faithful to the mythos Burroughs created, but close enough. It has adventure, though not a lot of action; humor, but not a lot of comedy; romance, in the 19th-century style, and a good cast.
Samuel L. Jackson tries his hand at comic relief, and does quite well. It probably works because there is so little of it. His role is mostly serious.
Overall it's a good popcorn flick, and fun.

This day in 1923 the famous HOLLYWOOD sign was officially dedicated:
http://www.famousdaily.com/history/hollywood-sign-dedicated.html
I live in Hollywood, 46 years as a resident, and in and out of Hollywood for about another 5 years, and have seen some of the ups and downs of the Hollywood Sign. The feared real estate development on the hillside in front of the sign is pretty much no longer a threat, but the view of the sign from Hollywood street level is rapidly vanishing. For decades, there were height restrictions on building in Los Angeles, in general, and Hollywood, in particular. However, developers have been playing fast and loose with the building codes and are in a frenzy of constructing a very large number of high rise commercial and residential projects. The result has been the view of the sign is now obstructed from very large areas of the Hollywood area. There is some irony in tourists coming to Hollywood and not having clear view of what is perhaps the most iconic symbol of the Hollywood legend. Some of the private citizens and and some of the community organizations are fighting back: several successful civil legal actions have stopped some of the most flagrant violators of existing codes and have stopped new attempts to amend the codes to the developers liking. One very notorious developer had one project where they made some very specific promises, in writing, and then promptly broke those agreements. They even started to lease apartments in their project before they even had the necessary city and county permits to do so; as a result, the court ordered them to vacate all the tenants from the property and show cause why the developers should not be held criminally liable for their violations. As of now, the very large project sits vacant and there is no immediate prospect of reopening...
So, if you have plans to come here to Hollywood and see the Hollywood Sign from here in Hollywood, do so quickly; otherwise you may have to settle for seeing it from a tour bus...
BTW, the sign itself, though visible from Hollywood actually is some distance away to the east and sits in a different part of Los Angeles overlooking an area known as Los Feliz...

I finally got around to seeing In The Heart of the Sea, or as I'll call it from now on, Moby Dew,last Friday. I haven't been so disappointed in a movie in a long time. I posted a review of on Amazon, which was promptly downvoted by someone who probably worked for the studio. Thanks, guys... Anyway, here's my review for anyone who wants to read me bitch about a movie for a couple minutes.
Was this movie really made by the same guy who made Apollo 13 and Frost/Nixon?
That's the first thing that crossed my mind when I took this movie out of my Blu-ray player. Ron Howard is such an inconsistent director, I'm tempted to find out what position the planets were in when he made his good films. In the Heart of the Sea takes a fascinating true story, a rich but barely-mined historical setting, a fine cast, and squanders them on a frustrating misfire of a movie. Granted, it does have some effective moments, and does a fine job at depicting the realities of early 19th century whaling. The acting is mostly decent, although the dialogue does sound rather modern to my ears. Unfortunately, it goes seriously off the rails about halfway in, and never really recovers.
In fairness, the movie held my attention until the whale attacks and sinks the Essex. After that point, the movie deviates so sharply from actual historical events it comes across as a shoddy piece of Moby-Dick fan fiction, with the titular white whale swapping roles with Captain Ahab. Yes, the whale actually stalks and terrorizes the survivors of the Essex like the shark in Jaws: The Revenge. I found myself groaning every time the whale reappeared and starting behaving like a slasher movie villain. Speaking of Moby-Dick, the film features an awkward framing device involving Herman Melville and the last survivor of the Essex, who dutifully recounts his story to the struggling novelist. Never mind that Melville never actually met Thomas Nickerson, or that story of the Essex wasn't exactly a secret in 1850. The screenwriters apparently thought that anyone paying good money to see a movie about an 1800s whaling ship being rammed and sunk by an enraged Sperm Whale couldn't make the Moby-Dick connection on their own. I know fan service is big these days in Hollywood, but I can't imagine anyone cranking out a Moby-Dick prequel trilogy, or a Queequeg origin story, any time soon.
The real problem with this movie, though? It's friggin' UGLY! Even in its more effective moments, I found myself cringing at how nasty the cinematography was. The color grading is absolutely hideous; a good third of the film looks like it was soaked in an industrial sized vat of Mountain Dew for two weeks. Another third looks like the cinematographer was holding a urine sample directly in front of the camera. The CGI and green screen shots are frequently so obvious they totally kill the film's verisimilitude. It's shocking how much better Master and Commander looks; heck, even John Huston's Moby Dick still holds up reasonably well. If Ron Howard thinks this movie looks good, he needs to talk to his ophthalmologist.
In The Heart of the Sea is competent, but ultimately let down by awful cinematography, goofy deviations from historical reality, and a truly clunky framing device. I love a good boat movie, but this is a mess. If anything, it made me want to re-read Nathaniel Philbrick's book. I suggest you do the same.

Well written and said, I agree.
I was looking forward to this movie and then struggled to even finish it. Now I barely remember it as if I had seen it 10 years ago.
What I do remember is an irritating, annoying and completely overdrawn Chris Hemsworth, who lost me as soon as he gave his wife this 'manly' testosterone and romance-loaded "This is all I know!" speech.
And he made me cringe when they left port, when he barked orders out so we would believe he seems seaworthy. He wasn't.
Oh, or when he nearly dropped that boy over board at night, as a joke. Hahahahaha...yes very believable there, sure... :shifty:
(imagine he would have slipped... good luck stopping/turning a sailing ship and find a man in the water at night (who can't swim IIRC?), with lanterns...)
He was 19th Century Chris Hemsworth with perfect teeth on some boat. He was not whoever he had to be - if you know what I mean. While I admit that I do not like him in general for most of his roles, I have to say that he did at least one superb job: Rush.
The movie was badly written and the casting, at least that of Hemsworth, was a terrible mistake. Let him do his crappy super hero movies, that's where he belongs.
As to Ron Howard... yeah... his last good movie was Rush as well it seems.
u crank

Agree completely with you Sir. My daughter gave me Philbrick's book for Christmas and I was enthralled by it. Fascinating true story and history and very well written. I love that kind of stuff. I saw the movie about a month later and what a let down. Like you said, once the whale did that Jaws thing I was not impressed. To bad. Once again Hollywood takes a interesting true story and screws it up. Not surprisingly the movie was a box office bomb. I wish I had skipped it.

A very good one.
German movie, made 2014, title is "Zwischen Welten", meaning "Between Worlds."
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7f/Inbetween_Worlds.jpg
The movie is made very anti-sensational, which I liked. Little or no music, little to now special effects, certainly no popcorn movie. Much is said by what is not being said by anyone. Entertainment factor: low, years ago i saw two BBC productions on the Ireland conflict and the British mission in Bosnia, which were in parts run with a comparable level of soberness and understatement. But something keeps you hooked. The beginning is almost wordless. The movie was shot on original locations in Afghanistan, despite the risks and costs.
The movie can be seen for free on media channel of ARTE for another 19 days from today on. Beware: this is all in GERMAN. No subtitles.
Shockwave Flash needed. Just saying.
http://www.arte.tv/guide/de/048255-000-A/zwischen-welten?country=DE
For those not understanding it and not watching it therefore, I give the story here. If you want to watch it, you may want to skip the following.
If there is one movie or film document that illustrates the pointlessness and questionable and contradictory nature of the Western engagement in Afghanistan, then it is this movie. Highly recommended.
################################################## #####
SPOILER
A German captain returns to Afghanistan for his second term. His brother recently got killed there. The captain still is in a troubled state of mind, and fights inner demons.
A young Afghan was hired as translator for the Germans, his sister is with him. Their father got killed by Taliban years ago, for cooperating with the foreigners. The two young people are under threat and intimidation as well.
The captain gets sent with a small group to some godforsaken outpost, where they should cooperate with a local Afghan ´commander an dhis men. The camp is in a bad sahape, the methods of the Afghan commander get questioned by the german, and the German gets lectzured and doubted by the Afghan as well. Difficult start.
The young Afghan joins them, always torn apart between his worries for his sister'S sdafety left at home, who is targetted for being his sister, and for joining an bridge engineer's education course at school.
German and Afghans int he camp somehow arrange themselves with each other. But a night attack by the enemy at some nearby village distroys the small trust when the Gemans get forbiddne by High command to leave the camp at night. The Afghans go out, and fight. In the mornign they return bringing in their dea done. The Germans stand and salute. The Afghans are not sure what to amke of this.
The translator asks and gets permission to bring his sister into the cmap, into the household of the Afghan commander. While he does so, they get ambushed on the road , and the girl gets shot of the bicycle. He carries her to the cmap, and the Germna captain desperately tries to get permission to evacuate her into hospital. High command refuses to give permission. Furious, the captain takes a civil pickup, loads the girl in, plus two afghans and her brother, and drives her to the main base, ignoring his orders, but getting respect by the Afghans. His deputy meanwhile takes over his command and has the daily patrol getting out, as usual. It gets ambushed, the Dingo gets blown up, Germans die. At hpsital, the girl gets saved at last minute. The captain gets sent back ti germany, faces court martial, and gets kicked out without honours. Last you see him sitting in the green of the cliffs at the German Baltic coast, wondering. The translator in Afghanistan stops his bicycle at a railroad crossing, another car arrives and stops beside him, and when the train is gone and he wants to continue, the camera zooms to the distant horizon, and you hear a shot, then see only the foreign car racing away. End of movie.

Just found that it is set up at Youtube as well.
2-minute trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT7l1Rd8YbU
movie:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2huIvZOXoDY
English Wikipedia lists critics' positive reception:
Deborah Young describes in the Hollywood Reporter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Reporter) that the "territories are bound to appreciate the realism and muscular shooting by a woman director and crew (shades of Kathryn Bigelow and Zero Dark Thirty) on location in northern Afghanistan" and that "the immediacy and tension with which Aladag conveys the daily life of the soldiers is something to take home".[4] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inbetween_Worlds#cite_note-The_Hollywood_Reporter-4)
Guy Lodge writes in the Variety (http://javascript<b></b>:void(0)) that the film "is a sensitive corrective to more partisan war dramas" and that the "film's visual palette, as well as its marriage of classic melodrama with contempo grit, is most strongly reminiscent of Susanne Bier (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susanne_Bier)'s earlier work; if seen in the right places, it’s slick enough to potentially secure her an English-language assignment".[5] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inbetween_Worlds#cite_note-Variety-5)
Fionnuala Halliganut wrote in Screen Daily (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_Daily) that Inbetween Worlds is a "nuanced story, stylishly shot with a good deal of integrity", which '"should attract international arthouse audiences intrigued by the added weight of a German military presence in a modern battle zone".[6] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inbetween_Worlds#cite_note-Screen_Daily-6)
The movie won a small handful of national and international film awards, as well as a few more nominations. It debuted at the International Berlin Film Festival 2014. The director also wrote the screenplay. Despite her foreign name Feo Aladag (due to marriage), she is Austrian by birth (born as Feodora Schenk).

Very good and funny, a great homage to the series and the late 60s campy Batman feel is there, with funny lines and innuendos. Plus the original cast do the voices: Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar! Purrr-fect! :03:

Yep seen it, posted around the time it was released on DVD:
Last weekend, I sat down and watched ''Michiel de Ruyter'' (aka: The Admiral)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j21t1i_SiKI
As far as a historical drama goes, I never expect much from Dutch productions in terms of cinematography and acting but this blew me right out of the water (no pun intended).
Whilst the focus isn't on the historical aspect of that time it does however capture some of the conflict between the states party and the orangists, the complicated relations with England and some of the battles at sea.
I found myself liking it quite a bit (well I'm Dutch after all :D)
I think it does a good job of awakening the interest into the Dutch history around this time.
So yeah, in short it was good just overlook some of the historical errors like the use of the union jack on the RN vessels.

Thanks for that thumbs-up, Hunter  We're keeping it to watch on Friday night ('Film-Nite')
Just as an aside: it's hard to believe our countries were ever enemies; I accompanied my old dad to Holland a few years back (he was in the 6th Royal Welch Fusiliers, who were part of the campaign in NW Europe) and as I walked with him and his mates through the streets of 's-Hertogenbosch, crowds showered them with flowers, running up and taking their hands. I remember one woman shouting "Thank you... thank you" over and over, and this so long after it had all happened. I've never felt so moved before or since.

Don't trouble to watch this if you're a teenager wanting a good zombie flick.
This is an allegorical story which I expect would affect only the very empathic, or those of us who are parents. It would especially affect anyone who's had to contend with a seriously ill child. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the dad and, as you'd expect, he's brilliant.

That sure was a surprise :)
Saw Star Trek Beyond today. I must say that surprised me and I like it.
Of the "Abramverse" films, this one is the more trekkier with good scenes and a few tributes to the franchising and the 50 years.
Of course that it also have great action scenes and a few star warsish scenes, but not as the last 2 movies.
I think if they had take this kind of approach in the previous one, it would had close the gap of the Star Trek fans and this reboot universe.

Zulu has many historical errors. :O:
As has Zulu Dawn
The scene where the British army is crossing the Buffalo River is in the historic place but they are crossing in the wrong direction.
When Melville and Coghill climb out of the river with the colours you can clearly see that the flag is drenched. a few minutes later when they are trying to hold the Zulus at bay you can see the flag fluttering in the wind. It's impossible that the material could dry that quickly when it's that wet.
To name but two :03:

It's a good decent comic film, with some flaws and plot holes as normal, but they are quite under the radar. The cinematography and the specials effects are amazing and quite well done and it is also very entertaining.

Watched a couple of episodes of the new Netflix series Roman Empire: Reign of Blood about Commodus.
The style is bit of a clusterfornication. They mix drama, documentary and narration which makes it very hard to get invested in anything as you are constantly reminded that the show isn't quite sure, if it wants to identify as a documentary or a drama series. Would have been best to cut out all the interview bits and just have Sean Bean narrate the same stuff.
Actors are ok-ish, no one stands out in similar way as John Hannah or Lucy Lawless in Spartacus or James Purefoy in Rome.
I've noticed some scene repetition. In one scene there's only couple of seconds before they repeat the just now seen scene. That's just cheap.
I'd say watch it, if you REALLY want to watch something, anything new related to Rome. Otherwise, I'd suggest a rerun of Rome or the two first seasons of Spartacus.

This movie is just coming out today, but what I thought is strange is that he hasn't made a movie in (15) years.
Warren Beatty hasn't made a movie in 15 years: http://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news/warren-beatty-hasnt-made-a-movie-in-15-years-heres-why-he-returned/ar-AAjQdg8?li=BBnb2gg&ocid=iehp
Now Beatty's ending his 15-year break from the big screen for a film that focuses on old Hollywood called "Rules Don't Apply." Beatty plays billionaire film tycoon Howard Hughes.
The movie, which he wrote, produced, directed and stars in, also features Bening. (his wife)
"Rules Don't Apply" opens in theaters Nov. 23.

Yesterday I saw Interstellar-Seen it before, but it's one of the best sci-fi movie that have been made the last 2-3 decades.
Tomorrow it's going to be Terminator Genisys and the Martian-Seen both before, a second look wouldn't hurt and the Martian was a good movie.

Appleseed Alpha (2014)
http://pics.filmaffinity.com/appleseed_alpha-554504196-large.jpg
The Appleseed series have been on my radar for a while, will have to get around to them sometime, I think Hunter may have already watched through them, not sure.
With the recent death of Fidel, I'm reminded of an old favourite, Thirteen Days. It's got its flaws, Kevin Costners accent being one of them, but as far as a political-thriller goes, it ticks all the boxes, Rotten Tomatos gives it a 7.2/10, but sadly it bombed in the cinemas.
There's not much in the way of action, and everyone knows how the film will end...but, it's seeing how it goes from looking like war is the only option to the eventual withdrawal of the missiles from Cuba.
Bruce Greenwood does a good JFK and Steven Culp makes a fine Bobby, but Dylan Baker does a sterling role as McNamara and Michael Fairman is strikingly similar to Adlai Stevenson.
I think that they took a bit too much of a liberty with figures like LeMay and the more militaristic side of the arguments surrounding the decisions made during the crisis, but to be fair, I could see those types making arguments in favour of counter Soviet aggression with aggression, but...eh, politics.
Plus, it's not very often in film that you get to see the venerable F8 Crusader in action:

I've seen the Appleseed 2004 film, Appleseed Ex Machina which are quite good and parts of the Series called Appleseed XIII which was crap both in quality and characters as they're totally different.
I've yet to watch Alpha as at the time of release I couldn't find a Japanese copy and I watched the other two in the same language (however the voice actors of one of the main characters have changed even between the 2004 and Ex Machina Films), the other thing being from what I could gather without spoiling too much is that the story isn't a prequel because the manga it's based on is in itself a spin-off from the 2004 movie so some things what goes on and happened between the main characters is being ignored. I also have yet to watch the 1988 film of Appleseed, I didn't bother it with the the time as it wasn't based on the manga and only shared the characters but might do so one of these days out of curiousity.
I can recommend the 2004 and Ex Machina films, the series XIII however not so much.

My family and I went to see the movie Arrival starring Amy Adams. Amy has done some wonderful work but not this time.
Ms. Adams plays a linguistics professor who is asked to try to learn to communicate with space aliens. Now I don't know about you guys but about the only occupation more boring then linguist would be actuary.
The movie is way to long and confusing.
I could say more about Arrival but I do not want to give away any spoilers in case any of you want to see this stinker.
My best advice is don't waste your time or money on this junk.
One other thing I do not wish to imply that Amy Adams is in any way responsible for this turkey; I blame the writers and director for this dog.

Just finished watching Creation (2009), with Paul Bettany as Charles Darwin and his real-life wife Jennifer Connelly as Darwin's wife Emma. Also features Benedict Cumberbatch as Darwin's closest friend, botanist Joseph Hooker, and Toby Jones as Thomas Huxley.
Beautiful movie about Darwin's relations with his wife and their eldest daughter, Annie. Based on the book Annie's Box, written by Darwin's great-great-grandson Randal Keynes, it's about love and loss, and coping with the hardest parts of life.
Obviously I liked it.

The YouTube links will only work whilst allowed on their site. If they are deemed as copyright infringement then YouTube (as an example) would disable them and the links wouldn't work here or anywhere else they are posted.

Finally got around to seeing Rogue One.
I enjoyed it. I think it definitely could have been much worse.
When the Rogue One film premiered here in Hollywood, Disney had the city block off a two block length of Hollywood Blvd in either direction of the intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Vine Street for about a week and a half, about five or six blocks up from where I live. This totally disrupted all the traffic and public transit patterns in our area not to mention the blockage also made access to one of the only two subway stations in Hollywood more difficult. A lot of the residents who live in the area and commuters who make transfers at the subway were not very happy...
One aspect of the premiere was the presence of a full sized X-Fighter:
https://ksassets.timeincuk.net/wp/uploads/sites/55/2016/12/GettyImages-628379558_star_wars_x_wing_fighter_premiere_630.jp g
The X-Fighter was delivered unassembled in a number of full-sized shipping containers and was assembled on the street site. You may note the x-wings are not deployed; although Disney did not prevent passersby (it was a big hit with the tourists) from looking at and photographing the machine through the barrier fences, once they were ready to rev up the prop, they completely covered up the site; I guess Disney wanted no peeks if you didn't buy a ticket to the film...
Once the premiere was over it took a couple of days to disassemble all the fixtures Disney had installed for the event. I happened to walk by as they were packing up the fighter parts into the shipping containers. They were using a sort of forklift-crane combo to load a main part of the fuselage into its container and they were having a very difficult time; the clearance was virtually nil and there was very little way for the lift-crane operator to see exactly what was really happening up ahead of him. The guy spotting him gave a 'go' sign and the lift moved forward and there was sudden scraping sound, followed by some very surprised and worried expressions from the workers. As I walked away, I wondered which of those poor souls would be working the next day...

IF you haven't caught "The Wave" yet, it's worth a watch. It's in norwegian, but the subtitles did just fine. Don't use the English voice over, it's pathetic, and you lose a lot of the actors' performances.
Couple loose spoilers to follow, but nothing you can't expect to figure out after watching the first few minutes of the film:
It's your basic cliche disaster film, where the protagonist, who also the main character alerting everyone to the event, ends up trying to rescue his family. But yet, as far as I can tell, and I'm not a geologist, the science was very sound. They didn't try to stretch the laws of physics at all in any scene that I saw. The entire thing is completely believable.
I can't say it was low budget, since the videography is top notch, and there's no glaring errors, but they obviously did have a budget. I'm not sure if I believed the CGI of the tidal wave. That said, I've never seen a 100m wave rushing up a fjord, so I'm not sure what it would look like, but I just didn't buy the effect. It wasn't bad, I'm just not sure what I was expecting to see. It kinda reminded me of the wave from "The fellowship of the Ring".
But when the wave hit the main character, they could have gone a lot of ways to shoot it, with CGI and such. They went the complete opposite of what Micheal Bay would have done. It was completely believable and felt true, as you went along for the ride with him.
There were a couple other scenes that they also could have gone for the popcorn special effect route, and they didn't. They kept them real. And having spent a couple summers as a lifeguard, people do act like that when they think they're going to drown.
Any ways... it's worth watching. It's on netflix right now. I'm pretty sure we have a thread somewhere about the collapsing mountain this is based on. Knowing this is a real thing added a lot of weight to it. I tried to look it up, but no way was I remembering how to spell that thing.

Saw "Passengers" Tonight. Worth a view. I enjoyed it.
They could have gone much deeper into the psychology of the scenario, but they didn't. They could have gone much more hard core in the Sci Fi end of it, but they didn't. Seemed to be a nice balance between the two.
But seriously, how hard is to get simple physics right? When your floating weightless in space, tears do not run down your face. NASA just recently had major issues with this, our eyes are not adapted to crying in space.
But aside from a few gaffs like that in the physics department, good flick.
Not a true movie this is actually two episodes of Space 1999 back to back with added scenes of the lunar commission which fits in well and the real year is 1999 not 2100.

Passengers: I agree with what Gargamel wrote. IMO, the first part of the movie is the best one and the 2nd part, I think the writer didn't know what route to follow, so did a little bit of many.
The 0 gravity pool scene, made me think...:hmmm:
Hawksaw Ridge: good solid film, with good battle scenes; in overall I liked. A. Garfield does a good role and the support cast is also good (Vincent Vaughn as a drill Sargent, never thought...)
Arrival: strange and good sci-fi movie. Didn't got the all premisses of the movie before the last part, quite liked that. Just have a few thinks with how the argument dealt with the "how to communicate" and how the leading character was chosen. Possibly a few plot holes, but in all, the film is good.

I dunno if you'd be able to fully escape, as you get halfway out and run out of stuff to push against, but at the very least you should be able to get your head out to breathe.

Yes, at least to catch your breath. If one (in similar situation) is with the head out of the water bubble and began to move the feet as if swiming crawl (free style [correct term?]), the movement would create motion or even disrupt the bubble. I think...:hmmm::03:

New series. Drama set in an alternate history of the Second World War where Germany won the Battle of Britain and has gone on to occupy the UK. The arrival of an American journalist leaves one of the policemen convinced something more danger is at work - while a contact in a resistance movement reveals a threat to his own son.

Actually, the success of La La Land is not all that surprising; it is what is called in Hollywood a "movie movie", a film celebrating aspects of film-making, in this case the beloved movie musicals of the past. It's just Hollywood giving itself a pat on the back. Nothing will get kudos from the film community more fervently than a film catering to the 'collective ego' of Hollywood. Considering the dross coming out of Hollywood nowadays, being able to look back with fondness at the past glories may be a bit of a balm to smooth over the hurt from the crass commercialism of major studio releases. Thankfully, there is still a lot of good viewing to be found in the independent film areas...

Really enjoyed Bruce Willis' movie "A Good Day to Die Hard" last night. Nowadays it seems there has to be a destructive car chase and a spectacular copter-crash in every action film, and this had the best of both.

I'm like a lot of you guys and have a long list of ones I like.
Out of laziness, I say that "Blade Runner" is my favorite. It definitely IS among my favorites but there are others that are only a few decimal places lower.

Throughout the latest three to four days I have seen commercial for a movie King Kong Skull Island. Earlier this evening I toke a look at the movie on IMDB. 8.6/10..That was a high score, so it seems like it's a good action movie....or ?

Imdb scores are not the word of God.
If you check Imdb top 250, you'll notice something is a little off.
Also, most movies start with very high ratings (bots!) and go down with time. This can be observed with nearly every movie there. The only exception I witnessed Wad the crappy Ghostbusters remake - that ones rating was more accurate day one than it is now...
Saw Manchester by the sea and Logan. Both good movies. The first, a good hard drama and Casey Affleck does a good performance, possibly the oscar is well deserve.
Logan, great movie of the gender and a good film in all, so even if one does not go with the super-hero/marvel/dc comic books adaptation, can still enjoy it.

White Tiger good all around movie. As someone else already mentioned the last 7 minutes 30 seconds of the movie is the scariest yet best part.

Been out for a little bit, but if you haven't seen it, Do so. Just a great little film.
Solid 8/10 in my book.

At long last watched Rouge One and enjoyed it, better than Star Wars episode 7. Darth Vader really kicked butt very near the end and got a good laugh at the sarcastic K-2SO. Right now the cgi actors, well Peter Cushing was rather mixed for me as the close up's did not work but the further away shots and in the dark came across alright. As for the younger Carrie Fisher some what of a cring scene because the lighting was bright but it was brief.
