I"Million Dollar Baby".
It's funny - I hated that movie just because of the way it...well, pretty much the whole thing. Then while I was homeless I found the short story it was taken from, and was amazed at how closely the movie stuck with the book.

Newfound respect. :sunny:

Oh, BTW, I'm still homeless. I mean, I have a house and all but, I don't belong on this planet. I have no business being here, but I'm doing my time anyway.:D

Hmm. I'll have to make a effort to see it. Always wanted to but just never got around to it.

I watched Paint Your Wagon with my wife the other day who was a bit amazed to see him singing. One of my favorites.

Not sure how others might feel about this movie, but I'd have to place it in my top 100 best films. I'm not exactly a Brad Pitt fan, but along with "A River Runs Through It", I thought this was one of his finer performances.
There's an all star cast, (more great performances by Kevin Bacon, Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro, etc.) and it is allegedly based on the true life experiences of Lorenzo "Shakes" Carcaterra.

Dustin Hoffman? A gazillion movies! The Graduate! Little Big Man! Rainman! He's a true genius.

Kevin Bacon? I have one word for you: Tremors.

Jason Patric? Try The Alamo. Or go all the way back to 1987 and watch The Lost Boys.

All fine actors. :sunny:

Eheheh! Well I should not talk, since I never saw the movie also (yet). As I said before here in this thread, that movie passed me. And it is a gap on the films of that era.
But Steve mention several Dustin Hoffman films, but didn't mention the marathon man and since RO didn't remember seeing him (DH, not Steve:O:) acting, I thought of the picture!
The character was on the top 50 or less movie villains! And the picture in other top, most disturbing film pictures or something.

Death Of A Salesman
Way back in '68, right after The Graduate made Hoffman a star, I read a magazine interview in which he said that his biggest dream at the moment was to play Willy Loman onscreen, big or small. When I read that he was making Death of a Salesman I was ecstatic.

I only mention it to point out that after all these years I still haven't seen it.

Don't feel bad. I can hardly recall the movie, let alone the book, which was required reading at my (probably everybody's) High School at the time. I just remember that in the movie, he was Willy Loman. I remember the central theme and all, but I'd need some refreshing on the finer details.
I can't even remember if he succeeded or not.:nope:

Why is that a problem? Von Richtofen was indeed commander of Jagstaffel 11 from January 16, 1917 to June 24, 1917, when Jagdgeschwader 1 was formed. The movie specifically states that when Stachel joins Jasta 11 it is 1918, so von Richtofen was long gone and the movie is correct.

[edit] Actually Jasta 11 was incorporated into JG 1 just a month later, so there is some merit, but there's no indication that they operated from the same airfield, so physically they were still separate.

My point still stands though. JG1 wasn't a squadron, it was a wing under the command of Richthofen, and comprised of Jastas 4, 6, 10 and 11, which each operated from seperate airfields. Richthofen didn't fly with Jastas 4, 6, or 10, he still flew with Jasta 11. He was flying with Jasta 11 when he died.

That makes sense, but do you have an actual source? I can't find one anywhere. The problem I have is that Jasta 11 had new commanders after von Richtofen was promoted. He could have flown with anybody. Or nobody.

Apparently Manfred was killed in Wolfram von Richthofen's first sortie. I can't find anything that says Wolfram was in any of the other Jastas, but he was in Jasta 11.

[QUOTE=Aktungbby;2099314]Der Rotte Flieger flew with Jasta 11 on his last patrol in his Fokker DrI # 425/17 with which he had achieved his last two victories on 20APR18. On 7APR18he had shot down the later actor Ronald Adams who died in 1979 in Fokker DrI 477/17. His last victim David Lewis survived to 1978 as Under secretary of Rhodesia. My source is Under the 'Guns of the Red Baron: the complete record'.:arrgh!:
Fair enough. I don't know why I'm arguing this, since I have my own complaints about the movie. The book had a much starker ending, but this also puts the lie to the book since it ends with Stachel meeting Herman Goering for the first time.

Anyway, I stand corrected. :sunny:

Or at least the bullets! the Lone Ranger is still my favorite hero!
Many years ago I read an old-fashioned black&white horror comic (well, many actually, but this is about one). One of the stories involved a teenaged girl and her younger brother, running from werewolves in the Old West. She sends a telegram for help, but while on the run she wonders if help will come in time, or if the telegram was even recieved. At the end the werewolves have the youngsters cornered in a canyon. At the last possible moment it looks like it's all over when shots ring out and the werewolves meet their fate. The children express surprise and gratitude, and the girl says "I was afraid you wouldn't believe me. No one thinks werewolves are real." The masked stranger smiles and glances at his companion and says "Of course we know about werewolves! Why do you think we always carry silver bullets?"

I just finished the book last night....that was such a good book... I even got a little teary-eyed at the end and that's rare for me.

You just have nothing but full complete respect for these men. I think if it stays true to the story, this'll be a powerful movie.

And if I met Marcus Luttrell tomorrow, I have no idea how I'd react. I'd probably be speechless. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.

That is fine I suppose but they should make a movie about the regular Marine infantry that completed Operation Whalers which was conducted a few days after the Seal Team being compromised and the loss of the MH-47.

They managed to wipe out most of Ahamd Shaw's fighters including the one who most likely shot down to MH-47 with the RPG(he tried it again against a US Army dustoff and got shot dead by a Marine).

Just saying not to discredit the Seals or anything but Operation Red Wings is an excellent example of SOF trying to do too much when they could have done a better job working with regular forces.

I wonder if it will show that Phastun villagers saved his life and actually refused to allow Ahamd Shaw to come inside the compound they that Luttrel in.I doubt it.Luttrel asked that one of the villgers goe to Assassabad where the SOF where stationed he did not know that the villagers had previously had had bad experiences at Assassbad so they instead walked further and in the other direction to speak with Marines that they had a good relationship with.An example of how the typical SOF attitude or perhaps the intel guys at Assassabad did not develop good relationships with the locals such a thing is vital in a counter-insurgency.

There is a very good book called "Victory Point:Operations Red Wings and Whalers" you should read it as it gives a more complete picture of the entire series of operations.During Operation Whaler the Marines and Seals suffered no KIA and only a handful of WIA.

The most interesting special forces guys I ever met where US Army Delta Force some of them had been in Somalia in 1993 (I talked to these guys in 2002) they where very nice guys very mature and respectful not show offs in any way at all they did not even say themselves that they where Delta but you could tell by their kit and what they talked about.Navy Seals it is hit or miss I have met ones that where pretty humble but usually they are sort of cocky unlike the Delta guys who where just as if not more skilled.Navy Seals are Hollywood Delta you never hear about their missions except in rare cases.

I don't remember the book telling about Marines that went in...but I know the Rangers did. The Rangers and Afghan SOF were the ones who rescued Luttrell. To me, Red Wings sounded a little too big for 4 guys on a mountain to begin with. If they were going to use SOF, they should've had more.

I hope they show that. That was important in the book when the Taliban started harassing the village. I read somewhere that Marcus wants the movie to stick as close to the book as possible since "Most people get their information from TV Shows and Movies these days."

Luttrell never says anything about the village elder after he leaves the village. You assume by what happens next that he successfully made it to the base

I'll try and read that. :salute:

The most interesting special forces guys I ever met where US Army Delta Force some of them had been in Somalia in 1993 (I talked to these guys in 2002) they where very nice guys very mature and respectful not show offs in any way at all they did not even say themselves that they where Delta but you could tell by their kit and what they talked about.Navy Seals it is hit or miss I have met ones that where pretty humble but usually they are sort of cocky unlike the Delta guys who where just as if not more skilled.Navy Seals are Hollywood Delta you never hear about their missions except in rare cases.

I've never met any SOF...but I've met all kinds of regular army/air force/marines/navy guys.

The SOF people are probably some very interesting people to talk to. :arrgh!:

One of these days they'll make a film about the recovery of L/Cpl Fords body, but I don't think anyone would believe it. The chaos and blue on blue, and then the very unconventional recovery.

That was a pretty good book.Likely not high on the list to be made into a movie being a story about the UK armed forces such things rate very low on most American movie goers list of interests.

@Red October it depends on the person some people are interesting others are not or they are overly self centered just like any other people can be.The most interesting stories I have ever heard where from a guy that was a KC-135 boom operator in the USAF.He was stationed at RTAFB Udorn back during Vietnam.

The other thing is a lot of people will say that they where a specialty they really were not(you see this very often I love it when a dude says that he did my job and I know by what he says he really did not) or they will claim to have been in the military when they where not or when they in fact got kicked out during or shortly after basic which counts nothing for service you are not really a veteran in that case.

I would say that it is dishonest. You never know if a military claim is true unless you see the persons records their discharge papers will tell what specialty(s) they where and also where they served and the medals they where awarded. Most people do not see that data.Even members of our legislative branch have been caught making incorrect claims such as being a Vietnam vet when in fact they served during the time period of Vietnam but in Vietnam or the associated zones.

We hired this young guy that just got out of the Marines a few months back and that was his most recent job so I know he was what he claimed by seeing his DD-214.All though we did not hire him simply because he was in the military that would be unfair and not everyone that is former military is a good employee or will be.He was the best and most enthusiastic person we interviewed he also had good understanding of what we do.He lucked out I would say not very many good jobs in these parts.

Anyway movies....

A film I have always liked is Blade Runner.I have gotten into many discussions as to whether or not Deckhard was a replicant.I think he was and that is why Roy Batty spared his life.

I assume you mean the last part about the members of the legislature being dishonest. If you disagree with the other part about a vet not by default being the ideal person I would say that you are a bit naive. What happens when you interview two vets but you only have one job? Vets get priority with the Postal Service and any GS position not withstanding credible experience and education if it is required.

Tru dat. The character of Dill is definitely based on Truman Capote; they remained friends for years. If you watch Capote (I think that's the one, there's more than one recent Capote biopic) you'll see Harper Lee portrayed in her real life role as his assistant and confidante as well as scenes related to the publication of Mockingbird.

Definitely one of the best movies ever, we saw it in school after reading the book. Have watched it many times since and own one of the collector's edition sets which includes a delightful documentary about Peck made by one of his kids, IIRC. During the time period over which the doc was filmed one of Peck's kids was expecting a child and when it was born they named it Scout. That's how important the book and film were to Peck and his family, and rightly so.

The "thank god for the sickle cell, was amusing, when the black guy proved he was not too Buku. Freaking Animal Mother ruled.

Gunnery Sgt. Hartman made that movie.

A little trivia, R Lee Ermey was serving as an advisor on the film, when Kubrick gave him the part, most of his quips to the recruits were off the cuff.

Animal mother was a great character, and I enjoyed the dynamic between Joker and Raptorman.

I loved how Joker "grew up", you almost saw his childhood leave him. Matthew Modine was phenominal.

Vincent D'onofrio is well underrated as his part was so short, the look he gives Joker sitting on the toilet is great acting, you saw lunacy in his eyes.

Steve, I know you lived that life, and mean no disrespect.

But it portrayed Joker losing his sense of humor as he saw the rawness, and reality of war.

He spent a long time trying to "get into the *stuff*" (in the movie it was an s word)

Then when he got there, he regretted it.

You are looking at it as a whole, and not on the way things effected the induvidual characters. Like Pyle, and especially joker.
Sure it was overdone at points, but the progression of Joker is what the movie was about, it was about his youth and good naturedness being ruined by horriffic things he saw.

He did not joke and smile at the end....

He was ruined, what Kubrick intended.

Sure it is anti war, but it gives a compelling reason for the view. IMHO
(which is why the second part of the movie should not be ignored, as it is the point of the film.)

Amazon has The Boys in Company C, but also for $20. On the other hand they have Born On the Fourth of July through Amazon Prime for $7.35. If you don't have Prime you can get a new copy for $3.35 ($7.34 with shipping) or used "Very Good" for $1.45 ($5.44 with shipping).

I've looked around, and Boys is about the same price everywhere.

I don't have Prime...but I'll keep an eye out for The Boys in Company C.

Born on the Fourth Of July shouldn't be 20$ at Hastings...but it was...therefore, I waited. :)

Soon though...very soon...

I've talked about The Pacific (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pacific_(TV_miniseries)) before...but I don't think I have in this thread.

I finished With The Old Breed yesterday and I'm currently re-watching the series.

E.B. Sledge is a hero to me (among some others). There's something about his story that just clicks with me. I don't know what it is.

The Pacific: Marines of The Pacific - Eugene Sledge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GHjgKvl25s)

I haven't read any of the other memoirs...but all those men are just as inspiring. John Basilone, Robert Leckie, Sidney Phillips... and all the other thousands of men who fought in the hell of the Pacific Islands. Army, Navy, Marines, and soldiers of other nationalities.

I think this is a must-watch.

Very entertaining and interesting, I think. It is of course very unrealistic, very utopic. But sometimes "what if..." movies are the best entertainers. :D

Until every teenager in the world saw it and blew up the hype. "OMG...The Purge was scary...what would you do?"

I thought from the commercials and some articles that it's a perfectly good reason to have the 2nd Amendment...but..I haven't seen it so I don't know how it goes.

I know what you think...

I saw that coming...but seriously...

If you think about it, the movie is indirectly arguing the Gun Control debate. It sounds like an interesting movie...but from a political standpoint, it seems a little fishy to me. Like they're using movies to sway our opinions.

I don't want a 10 page argument here...thats for another thread...but this is my analysis of what I know about the movie.

Who was Pearl Harbor made for again? Not the Japanese, as it showed them shooting at hospitals (which didn't happen), and it certainly wasn't made for Americans, seeing as it showed the Americans as idiots who kept brushing their teeth in an air raid...

(BTW, not sure if it's a correction or not since I don't know if hospitals were attacked at Pearl...but in E.B. Sledge's Memoir, there are many times where the Japanese knowingly attacked medical personnel on Okinawa and Peleliu. There were stories from all around the 1st Marine Div. in that book of Corpsmen and Stretcher Bearers were often specifically attacked.)

Yes!

That movie bothered me, as not one person smoked a cigarette!

It was the 40s! Everyone smoked, they came with ration kits for soldiers.

It was a Rom-Com, disgused as a war movie. Misleading trailers, the whole nine...

What a pile of crap...I like Ben Affleck, but Yechhhh!

Everyone poops too, but that is no reason to include it in a movie. There are a lot of things that "everyone" does that are not included in movies. :D

I like the idea of NOT having movie actors smoking in a movie unless there is a rare instance where smoking is critical to the story. Just like pooping, it can be assumed without actually showing it.

We don't need to glamorize smoking in movies.

It's stunningly beautiful, as future dystopia goes, it's up there with the best, but...it just didn't scratch that itch for me. I suspect it's the Noir element of it, I just can't connect it with the futuristic era.

So I've switched over to C-SPAN to watch a dark comedy instead.

It's good if you can't tell the difference between a Herc and a Cub. :/\\!!

Basics people. I hope the book would explain better how they got around so quickly, from Israel to Cardiff (or at least crash near enough to walk the rest of the way!) and then teleporting to Canada?!?!?!?!?!

One last point on this film (I did enjoy it but it really could've been sooooo much better) - The Iridium sat phone needs line-of-sight to the satellite, laying in your bunk below decks on some vessel just ain't going to work, zombies or not.

A film I'm in the middle of at the moment is Passport to Pimlico - the title alone has put me off for my 39 years on this planet, but after plumping for reading the blurb about it it seemed interesting and funny. And it is. :yeah:

The only relation between the movie and the book is the title...oh, and zombies, that's it, absolutely it. I haven't even seen the movie, and I don't need to to know that there are very little similarities which is a crying shame because the book has so many scenes in it that are crying out for a movie adaptation. One of the things I do like about the book, that I don't know if it is covered in the film but...judging by the *shudder* fast zombies *shudder* I doubt it, is the real problems of killing a zombie with modern munitions. Most munitions are designed to deliver fatal shock to the body, embolisms and such through rapid changes of pressure, but the 'Zekes' don't suffer from embolisms, nor do they suffer from pain, and so long as they have motor function, they will keep moving. So you take all our weapons designed to kill living creatures and throw them out of the window because suddenly HE shells aren't the area killers they used to be...sure they'll take arms and legs off, but that's what...seven 'Zekes' out of a crowd of several thousand, and they will just keep coming...not fast, not like some sort of retarded mound of ants, but a slow inevitable wave, and you can outrun them, sure...but eventually you're going to get tired and have to sleep...and they don't need to sleep.
THAT'S what makes the horror in zombie fiction, they're not unstoppable through speed or some random superpowers, they're unstoppable because of the sheer volume, and their robustness to modern 'shock' weaponry.

The book addresses a lot of that, but the film seems to rely more on the 'modern zombie' flick, fast zombies, occasional jumps and some random sort of 'zombie wave' action which whilst impressive, would be better if the zombies weren't fast...

Hate fast zombies...it's just wrong... :nope:

I honestly did not know that there was an "older" The Thin Red Line seems like the 1964 version is average at best.I have only see the 1998 version and it is pretty good maybe a few too many known actors in it though I find film like that can actually be harder to get into.I think the 1998 film would have been better with just a few well known actors and the rest more unknown.

The 1998 one is good it is just a bit more of psychological film than an action film say like Saving Private Ryan.TTRL is much gritter and feels more desperate but does not have as much action. The 1964 version only gets three stars on IMDB which I find has generally fairly accurate ratings.

The 1998 version get 7 and a half which I would agree with I think it has a few too many famous actors and movies like that you always have a hard time truly relating to the characters.Like I said before I think it would be a better film if it had fewer well known actors.

I think the best war movie or the one that shows the effects there of is a Soviet film called Come and See about a 14 or 15 year old boy (it never says for sure his age) who joins the partisans and through the course of the film you see what happens to him it is a really brutal film.Of course that film you must either speak Russian or read subtitles. The part at the end where the partisans get revenge on this group a Nazis they have captured is so intense and trust me the Nazis deserved what they got.I just love how the one officer just keeps spouting his crap and some of the others try to beg for mercy exactly things that humans do when retribution is about to occur. You really want to put a bullet in his face as you watch.

I looked in every store in my area. I've only seen one DVD copy of it outside of the one I just bought and rentals stores. I didn't want to get it online.

There was one at a truckstop at some sort of "On-The-Border" Mexico thing on the NC-SC border.

I didn't have money then having spent it other places on the vacation. (For example....THE USS NORTH CAROLINA!)

Anyway, the point is, I have it now.

The best war movies have more than just action going on.

The psychological/moral ones are usually very very good.

Saving Private Ryan...believe it or not, I have not seen all of it.

I saw a good two thirds of it and that was it. My VCR is broken so I can't watch some of my older war movies anymore.

SPR was kind of hard to take seriously because Tom Hanks was in it. I think they should have more unknown actors in big name war movies. Your average soldier isn't the Tom Hanks type....or the George Clooney type... Your average soldier is an average guy.

Take The Pacific....some of the other actors had roles in other movies....but since they were relatively unknown compared to some other war movie/series actors, they captured the story perfect.

I still think Joe Mazzello and James Dale were the perfect choices for Sledge and Leckie. Nobody else that I know of could play the parts better.

His performance as Cpt. Miller was fantastic and there was not a single scene with him I found iffy or that remembered me that I am watching Tom Hanks, like in Tom Cruise movies...
He delivered his lines spot on and the character itself was the average guy, a married teacher from... I forgot, who struggles with the war just like anybody else. It is obvious you haven't seen it all.

That is why I mentioned Come and See it has very little actual "action" and when it does there is nothing glorifying about it and it logically ties into the story being told.In fact the protagonist the teenage boy only fires his weapon one time.It is one of the few movies that I have seen about war that really made me feel disturbed as I watched it and when it was done.Even tough I own the film on DVD I'll likely only watch it a few times not because it was a bad movie but because it was effective.

It is what you see the teenage boy go through the horror that he feels when he sees a certain event it is so shocking to him and he wants so deeply for what he knows is real not be he actually goes deaf with hysteria for a time.

It was a well done movie...but I'm weird...I know. Tom Hanks is a great actor...but every time I see him in a movie, I immediately remember Toy Story and Forrest Gump...because that's how I knew him when I was little.

He did amazing in Captain Phillips. I should actually get around to watching SPR again and watching the whole thing...but my VCR is broken. :hmmm: And so is my Xbox...so not even any DVD action here.

Claus was a good boy, with all the horrors spoken about Germany during that period, he was a hero to not only Germanys people, but to the world.

More of a martyr really, his death had no effect on the outcome, though some sources say he unraveled the fuhrer into paranoia that broke them from the top down.

I heard the Berliners did not appreciate Tom Cruise running around town in his Nazi costume.:haha:

Get over it, I still find it funny that any game or movie with a swastica has to be edited specially for Germany....Is it pretending it never happened, or fear of it happening again?

You don't know the character or the X-Men comics, I think?

Magneto began working with Xavier for integration but shift to the idea of the mutants being superior - Homo Superior and so his goal was always the mutant conquering the non mutants and rule them.
The thing is, the Hell Club agenda is different in the comics, in the movie they serve to create the conflict of ideas for magento and xavier to depart. Not a good explaination, but I lack of the english terms to explain better. Sorry.

I might look online for the story behind it later. Would make sense because First Class was great the way they put the story into the Cuban Missile Crisis. I liked that.

I loved the movie, but only because I went into it wanting to see great CGI Jaeger vs Kaiju fights, the movie delivered for me.

Some of the lines were hokey, but I really like Guillermo Del Toro so I am kinda biased.

Action= this movie delivers

Just do not expect a literary masterpiece. Some of the lines were BAAAAD!

It was well acted, the black dude that played the Marshall was my favorite character, as he was the most consistent and interesting.

This movie fell short as the main characters dillemma was presented from the door, leaving little mystery, but I found myself wanting to know more about the Marshall. (The guy that played him seemed to be fighting back a British accent at times, my only beef)

1) Killing Season with De Niro and John Travolta - About a retired NATO Col. from the Bosnian War in the 90's who meets a Serb who was there. He quickly finds out that the Serb has a score to settle.

Sucked. Don't see it. De Niro should never have done that one. The best part is that Nick Cage was originally supposed to be in it.

It's one of "those" kind of movies that you just don't watch.

2) The Colony with Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton - About life after the next Ice Age, Colony 7 sends a team to investigate an SOS from Colony 5. DO watch this one. It's kind of a low-budget Alien-type of movie. It was pretty entertaining if you don't think of technicalities. I liked it.

What an utter load of drivel! 1:40 is the length of the movie, take away either Carey Mulligan or Ryan Gosling pouting into nothingness and you have about (and this is being generous) 10 minutes left of action - with a total of about 1 minute of chase-like driving that we'd actually expect. The music score is horrendous with a howl-theme running through it which did nothing for this movie, but made my ears hurt.

The ending is bad, concluding a bad, bad film.

Don't bother with it, not even for the Christina Hendricks scenes. Seriously, don't.

I really liked American Hustle.

It was a bit odd, but the character interactions were priceless.

Louie Ck and Bradley Coopers character interactions always got a laugh.

All the characters were utterly pathetic, all of them just scum.

Jennifer Lawrences repulsive character, and Christian Bales, just as equally repulsive, had some great interactions.

What I found funny about this movie, was the only truly noble character, was the Over the top stereotypical Jersey Guido politician, played by Jeremy Renner, also a great job by him.

I don't see this movie getting academy accolades, it is not mainstream enough, in the sense of hollywood cookie cutter plots, But I really liked it,.

Without spoiling it, you know a plot twist is going to come, but you see it falling apart as the movie progresses, totally deteriorates, then it comes back around when you least expected it. Brilliantly done.

The above is IMHO, I liked Taken 2, and hated Olympus has Fallen. So my tastes can be odd.:D
